Saturday's betting tips: Giants, ump Wegner don't mesh

    Weather to watch

Toronto Blue Jays at Texas Rangers – A 14-mph wind will be blowing in from right field. Temperatures will be about 90 degrees.

    Who’s hot

MLB: The Red Sox are 11-4 in Josh Beckett’s last 15 home starts.

MLB: Milwaukee is 22-6 in Zack Greinke’s last 28 starts.

NBA: Boston is 8-2-1 ATS in its last 11 games following a SU loss.

WNBA: The under is 4-0 in the last four Tulsa-Washington meetings.

    Who’s not

MLB: The Giants are 0-5 in their last five games with umpire Mark Wegner behind the plate.

MLB: The White Sox are 3-8 in Jake Peavy’s last 11 home starts.

NBA: The under is 2-6 in the last eight Philly-Boston games.

WNBA: Los Angeles is 2-5 ATS in its last seven games vs. Phoenix.

    Key stat

33 percent – That’s what Celtics guard Ray Allen, bothered by ankle issues, is shooting over the last three games of Boston’s playoff series with Philadelphia. Allen is 8-for-24 in that stretch, including 3-of-14 from beyond the arc. With Avery Bradley (shoulder) out for the rest of the playoffs, the Celts need Allen to regain his shooting form.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Cardinals first baseman Lance Berkman underwent surgery Friday to repair a torn meniscus and will be out 8-10 weeks. St. Louis is hoping to have the veteran slugger back in August. Matt Adams will continue to play first, with Allen Craig (hamstring) due back in a week.

    Game of the day

    Philadelphia 76ers at Boston Celtics (-5.5, 170)

    Notable quotable

“It’s what we have. Clearly Avery is a great defender, but he’s not out there, so I can’t worry about it. I really can’t. Their penetration and their (isolations) without Avery on the floor hurt. They went to a lot of iso’s and they were picking who they wanted [to attack].” – Celtics coach Doc Rivers, on Boston’s inability to guard Philly’s perimeter players without injured defensive ace Avery Bradley.

    Notes and tips

Sixers forward Elton Brand has undergone a dramatic turnaround in the last two games of the Eastern Conference semifinals. In Games 1-4, Brand averaged 16 minutes, 4.3 points and 2.8 rebounds. The 33-year-old suddenly played 30 minutes in Game 5, getting 19 points and three rebounds. Then in Game 6, he played 34 minutes, posting 13 points and 10 boards. Coach Doug Collins called Brand his team’s “ace of spades” and the 6-9, 254-pounder has the “heart of a lion.”

The LVH has posted odds for Saturday's NCAA Division I lacrosse semifinals at Gillette Stadium. Loyola (Md.) is a -200 favorite over Notre Dame, with the total set at 17.5. Duke is a -160 favorite over Maryland, with that total pegged at 18.5. The final will be played Monday.

Few batters are as dangerous right now as Miami OF Giancarlo Stanton. He hit his 10th May homer in Friday's win over the Giants.

Orioles OF Adam Jones, 26, is reportedly getting a contract extension for six years and about $85 million. It would be the largest deal in franchise history. Entering Friday’s game, Jones was hitting .311 with 14 homers and 29 RBIs.

      Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

We're going to go thru the over/under win totals for each NFL team in this space over the next week, division-by-division. Today, the AFC South:

-- Houston 10, over -$120-- Phillips improved their defense LY.

-- Indianapolis 5.5, under -$135-- All they need is a lotta Luck.

-- Jacksonville 5.5, under -$135-- New owner, new coach; whos the QB?

-- Tennessee 7, over -$130-- Whatever happened to Chris Johnson?

Remember, what I've listed here are just odds, not any prediction.......

      ************

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

      13) Bought my 86-year old dad a cellphone to text on, which is interesting in itself, but Verizon nails you for a $35 “activation fee” when you buy a new phone. Rotten bastards; they should charge $35 extra for the phone- that would feel more honest. "Activation fees" reek of thievery.

Employees in the store agreed with me, but that’s business these days. Bleed your customers as much as humanly possible.

      12) ESPN will be showing the Nathan’s hot dog eating contest from Coney Island again on July 4th. It might be the most bizarre hour of programming on ESPN all year.

      11) You watch these NHL games, and they’ve got a sideline reporter down by the benches, Pierre McGuire; he was a scout/assistant coach for the Penguins when they won consecutive Stanley Cups in 1991/1992, and later was coach GM of the Hartford Whalers.

His last coaching job before moving to TV was coaching the Baton Rouge Kingfish of the ECHL; that’s like the coaching job Paul Newman had in Slap Shot. He must have some interesting stories.

      10) Given that the Phillies are a combined 5-11 when Halladay/Lee start, and they’re 8-1 when Cole Hamels starts, if they contend later this summer, shouldn’t Hamels get strong MVP consideration?

      9) Indiana Pacers’ coach Frankie Vogel played three years of D-III hoop at Juniata College in Pennsylvania, then transferred to Kentucky, where he spent two years as a student manager for Rick Pitino, because he knew he wanted to get into coaching.

Smart move, as the connections he made there got him into the NBA, where he has worked his way up to a head coaching job. Either Vogel is awful smart or he listens to someone who is awful smart.

      8) When he was in 8th grade, Vogel appeared on the Stupid Human Tricks on the David Letterman Show, balancing a basketball on a toothbrush while he brushed his teeth. Not sure how someone starts doing that.

      7) Georgia football coach Mark Richt got his contract extended three years, a must for recruiting, but he didn’t get a raise, though the money he can earn incentive-wise has risen. Always big expectations for the Dawgs, who have an experienced QB now, which always helps.

      6) Why would JR Smith not have a valid driver’s license? How do you let it lapse? You can’t forget it, because you renew it on your birthday every few years. Smith’s given name is Earl, by the way.

      5) Padres have a relief pitcher named Alex Hinshaw; turns out that his mother's brother was once Afghanistan's ambassador to Italy. Seriously.

      4) I'm in a 16-team keeper fantasy league where you can draft guys in the minor leagues, 25 men on a team, 26 if you have someone on the DL. Well, as I type this, I have 16 batters/10 pitchers on my team; of my 16 batters, one is in the minors, seven are injured, eight are healthy. Nine hitters are in the lineup every week. Not good.

      3) Think Texas Tech basketball coach Billy Gillispie enjoyed last season? Um, no. Six players transferred (got run out) of Lubbock after the season, with nine new players coming in to replace them. He'll do a good job there, but the Big X is deep water, with lot of big sharks swimming around. Need lot of good players to win in that league, so changes had to be made.

      2) When Central Michigan fired coach Ernie Zeigler in March, his son Trey, who was by far the Chippewas' best player, transferred from Central to Pitt, for obvious reasons. The NCAA has shown unusually good sense and allowed young Zeigler to be eligible this coming season, rather than sit out a year. Zeigler is really good and will be a help for the Panthers.

      1) Coming into Friday night's play, Milwaukee's Nyjer Morgan had come to bat with 49 men on base, and knocked none of them in. Zero. None. He is an outfielder, outfielders are supposed to produce runs. Yikes.

Public opinion: Saturday's top consenus plays

        NBA:

        Philadelphia 76ers at Boston Celtics (-5.5, 170)

The 76ers are younger and quicker, but Boston is a different team at home. The Celtics are 8-2 in potential series closeout games at the Garden. And the last 11 times they came off a SU loss, the Celts are 8-2-1 ATS. To continue that trend, the Celts must do a better job in the paint, where they were outscored 42-16 in Game 6. The home team is 8-3 ATS in the last 11 meetings.

        Consensus: Celtics 62 percent/76ers 38 percent

        MLB:

Philadelphia Phillies at St. Louis Cardinals (-160, 9)

Bettors are backing the dog and Kyle Kendrick, who has allowed three earned runs over his last two starts covering 13 innings. The Phillies have won the first two games of the series, scoring 15 runs on 27 hits. St. Louis starter Jaime Garcia also has been outstanding in his last two starts, yielding three earned runs over 14 1/3 innings. However, batters are hitting .300 against him overall as he’s given up 67 hits in 58 1/3 innings.

        Consensus: Phillies 59 percent/Cardinals 41 percent

NASCAR betting: Coca-Cola 600 preview and picks

It’s NASCAR’s longest race on a day many say is the best for motorsports all year. The Sprint Cup Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway is the ultimate test of endurance for drivers, teams and cars.

And no team seems better prepared to meet that challenge then Hendrick Motorsports and this week’s favorite, Jimmie Johnson.

Johnson has had a magical eight days, which started at Darlington and continued right through last Saturday night’s All-Star race. Johnson staged a dominating performance en route to a $1 million payday.

He also showed the rest of the field that he's the one to beat this weekend. Johnson, who has six career wins at Charlotte, won the Coca-Cola 600 three consecutive years (2003-2005). He’s poised to add win No. 7 Sunday.

“It is a very long race on a tough track,” Johnson told reporters. “It’s not only from the driver’s perspective, but the teams go through a lot to get prepared for that race. Staying alert and focused, properly hydrated all the things that the driver has to go through so do the guys that go over the wall. They change a lot of tires during that race. It’s a very tough event on everyone but I think everybody enjoys it. I know my guys do. I know I do. I love that challenge. I love it especially when you are going to Victory Lane. I hope to do that again.”

Another driver who looked strong last Saturday night was Johnson’s teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. Earnhardt is pumped heading into Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600, and he should be, for a couple of reasons.

Earnhardt nearly won the race a year ago, coming up a few hundred yards and less than a gallon of fuel short of his first Sprint Cup points victory at Charlotte Motor Speedway. He coasted across the line out of gas in seventh place. But he’ll carry momentum from a fifth-place finish in the Sprint All-Star Race after winning the Sprint Showdown and has a perfect 150.0 Driver Rating.

"Oh yeah, I mean when you run like this the week before it really makes you feel good. It really makes you look forward to it, not as many unknowns," said Earnhardt. "I think we showed what we are capable of doing here. We are going to bring the same car. We have a couple of ideas on how to make the car even faster, especially for qualifying that I hope will work out."

Don’t’ count out the Fords of Roush-Fenway Racing. Matt Kenseth won here last fall with his teammate Carl Edwards close behind in third. While Edwards has been struggling lately, Kenseth has been competitive nearly all season and could steal the show Sunday night.

          Head-to-head

Kevin Harvick vs. Kasey Kahne: Harvick won this race last season but still seems to be searching for that magic in 2012. Prior to joining Hendrick Motorsports, Kahne logged three wins at Charlotte, including a season sweep of both events in 2006. While both drivers have run well, look for Harvick to finish ahead of Kahne.

Jeff Gordon vs. Tony Stewart: Gordon has had a run of bad luck this season while Stewart has been hot and cold. Gordon has five wins here, the last coming in 2007. Stewart has a win here but that was back in 2003. But with Gordon’s string of bad luck in 2012, look for Stewart to come out ahead in this matchup.

          Bottom line

Fourteen races have been won from the pole, the last by Jimmie Johnson (October, 2009). Johnson also won the 2003 Coca-Cola 600 from the 37th starting position, the furthest back a race winner has started.

          Picks

          Jimmie Johnson (+550)
          Dale Earnhardt Jr. (+1,600)
          Matt Kenseth (+900)

Indianapolis 500 odds: Preview and racing picks

The 96th running of the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing” will no doubt be tinged with sadness as the racing world remembers the defending winner, but the 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series Indianapolis 500 will go on as scheduled in Speedway Indiana Sunday.

Dan Wheldon, who lost his life in a racing accident last year, will be there in spirit as 33 of the world’s best open-wheel racers vie for the biggest prize in motorsports. With a field full of rookies and seasoned veterans, anything can happen. But look for experience when picking a winner.

Ryan Briscoe (+250) starts on the pole Sunday and, while he delivered the 17th pole for team owner Roger Penske, he’s not presenting the best value in the Indy 500. Not only has he not won an IndyCar race in two years, but Briscoe has struggled at the Brickyard. In six starts at Indianapolis, his best finish is a fifth-place showing in 2007 and he’s crashed out of the race in the past two years. It’s a different story for his teammate Helio Castroneves.

Castroneves has won three Indy 500’s - the last coming in 2009 - and with the power of Penseke (which has 15 Indy 500 wins, five in the last 11 years), he’s the clear favorite. He will roll off in sixth Sunday. Castroneves won the first race of the season in St. Petersburg and could guzzle the milk for the fourth time Sunday.

Another driver with a lot of experience is Chip Ganassi Racing driver, Dario Franchitti. Franchitti is a two-time winner with his last Indy victory coming in 2010. His only handicap is his starting position of 16th, but he has the skill and the equipment to work his way to the front.

Racing fans shouldn’t count out Will Power. He’s never won at Indy but has dominated this season, winning three of the four races. He was 14th last year and has only one Top-5 performance in four starts at Indy. So while he’s not the favorite, he does have a great shot at winning the biggest race of his career.

            Head-to-head

Marco Andretti vs. Tony Kanaan: Both are popular drivers with experience, but no wins at Indy. Andretti has three Top-5 finishes while Kanaan has two Top-5 showings and a pole position. So far this season, Andretti has struggled while Kanaan has shown some life in the last two races. Look for Kanaan to finish ahead of Andretti.

James Hinchcliffe vs. Ryan Hunter-Reay: Both drivers will be starting from the front row. Hinchcliffe has one Indy start while Hunter-Reay has four. Neither has a remarkable record at Indy, Hinchcliffe finished 13th last year in his only start, Hunter-Reay’s best finish was sixth in his first start in 2008. But so far this season, both drivers have solid records with each having two Top-5 finishes. However, come Sunday look for the more experienced Hunter-Reay to come out ahead of Hinchcliffe.

            Bottom Line

In perhaps the biggest tribute to Dan Wheldon, the new Dallara DW12 chassis will make its superspeedway debut Sunday. The completely redesigned machine, with numerous safety innovations that stem from the fatal 15-car crash at Las Vegas last October, has yet to be raced on an oval. Turbocharged engines have also made their return to the series for the first time since 1996. However, after nearly a month of practice and testing, most drivers agree that Sunday’s Indianapolis 500 will be as exciting as always and the changes won’t affect the racing.

            Picks

            Helio Castroneves (+500)
            Dario Franchitti (+1,000)
            Will Power (+500)

Check out the opening Indianapolis 500 odds, courtesy of the LVH sportbook, below:

            Ryan Briscoe 5-2
            Helio Castroneves 5-1
            Will Power 5-1
            James Hinchcliffe 7-1
            Marco Andretti 8-1
            Scott Dixon 10-1
            Dario Franchitti 10-1
            Tony Kanaan 12-1
            Ryan Hunter-Reay 12-1
            J.R. Hildebrand 40-1
            Graham Rahal 40-1
            Rubens Barrichello 50-1
            E.J. Viso 60-1
            Alex Tagliani 60-1
            Ed Carpenter 75-1
            Oriol Servia 100-1
            Sebastian Saavedra 100-1
            Ana Beatriz 100-1
            Takuma Sato 100-1
            Charlie Kimball 100-1
            Wade Cunningham 200-1
            Justin Wilson 200-1
            Mike Conway 200-1
            Simon Pagenaud 200-1
            Simona De Silvestro 500-1

What bettors need to know: Saturday's NBA playoff action
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              Philadelphia 76ers at Boston Celtics (-5.5, 170)

              THE STORY
: A berth in the Eastern Conference finals is on the line when the Boston Celtics host the Philadelphia 76ers in Saturday’s Game 7 of the second-round series. The longtime rivals are meeting in a Game 7 for the first time since 1982 when the 76ers prevailed in Boston in the Eastern Conference finals. The home team has won 79.6 percent of the 108 Game 7s in NBA history.

              TV: 8 p.m. ET, ABC

ABOUT THE 76ERS: Philadelphia forced a seventh game with a gutty 82-75 home victory on Wednesday. Point guard Jrue Holiday had his highest-scoring game of the series with 20 points, and forward Elton Brand had 13 points and 10 rebounds for his second consecutive solid outing. Brand scored 19 points in Game 5. Sixers reserves Lou Williams (10.8 average) and Thaddeus Young (8.5) have had minimal effect in the series. Coach Doug Collins is happy Philadelphia’s season has a chance to continue, but isn’t satisfied. “I want more,” Collins said. “We’re going to get greedy and we want more. We’ve fought, we’ve worked, and we’ve gone through a lot as a team.”

ABOUT THE CELTICS: Veteran post Kevin Garnett has been Boston’s best player in the series and the Celtics are hoping he’ll be fresh after playing 40-plus minutes in two of the past three games. Garnett is averaging 20 points and 10.7 rebounds in the series and coach Doc Rivers is mindful that he needs Garnett to be strong in the final minutes. “We know he has to get rest,” Rivers said. “To have to take him out in the fourth quarter is hard, but we have no choice. He’s doing everything for us. But at the end of the day, he can’t play 48 minutes.” Point guard Rajon Rondo had a subpar Game 6 with six assists and four turnovers after averaging 14.6 assists over the first five games.

              TRENDS:

*Home team is 8-3 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
*Celtics are 8-2-1 ATS in their last 11 games following a SU loss.
*76ers are 9-4 ATS in the last 13 meetings.
*Over is 6-2 in the last eight meetings.
*Favorite is 7-3 ATS in the last 10 meetings.

Saturday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      Streaking

Felipe Paulino, Kansas City Royals (2-1, 1.42 ERA)

The 28-year-old right-hander hasn’t allowed a run in three of his four starts this season, including two against the Yankees. He’s fanned 29 in 25 1/3 innings, and batters are hitting .232 against him. Paulino gets the Orioles in Baltimore on Saturday.

Derek Lowe, Cleveland Indians (6-2, 2.15 ERA)

The 38-year-old sinkerballer has allowed two or fewer runs in six consecutive starts heading into Saturday’s outing against the White Sox. Despite only striking out 15 batters all season, Lowe is excelling by getting batters to pound the ball into the ground. He needs to be careful with Orlando Hudson, who is 13-for-42 (.310) against him.

                      Slumping

Mike Minor, Atlanta Braves (2-4, 6.96 ERA)

The wheels have come off for the 24-year-old lefty. He’s served up 12 homers in his last five starts, including four last time out against the Reds. Batters are hitting .286 against him. Minor hasn’t produced a quality start since April 24. He gets the Nationals at home Saturday.

Jeremy Guthrie, Colorado Rockies (2-2, 5.55 ERA)

The 33-year-old right-hander has yielded six earned runs in each of his last three home starts, including last Sunday vs. Seattle. The good news is that Saturday he’ll be pitching in Cincinnati. In fact, Guthrie has a 1.68 ERA in three road starts, compared to 9.92 ERA at Coors Field.
