Friday’s betting tips: Cubs’ losing streak making history

    Weather to watch

Toronto Blue Jays at Texas Rangers - 18 mph winds are expected to blow in from right field.

    Who’s hot

MLB: Nationals are 12-5 in their last 17 games as a road underdog.

MLB: Reds are 7-0 in Johnny Cueto's last seven starts as a home favorite.

NHL: Devils are 5-1 in their last six home games.

WNBA: Indiana Fever are 7-2 ATS in their last nine meetings with the Chicago Sky.

    Who’s not

MLB: Royals are 27-57 in their last 84 meetings with the Baltimore Orioles.

MLB: Rockies are 7-19 in their last 26 overall.

NHL: Rangers are 3-9 in their last 12 playoff games as an underdog.

WNBA: New York Liberty are 0-4 ATS in their last four games overall.

    Key stat

9 - The Chicago Cubs have lost nine straight games, marking their longest losing streak in 10 years. The Cubs are just 15-29 heading into Friday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates and they play 16 of their next 19 games on the road.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Travis Hafner, Cleveland Indians – The Tribe sat their DH for Thursday’s matinee against the Tigers. Hafner's battling a knee injury and his status for Friday’s game against the White Sox is in question. Hafner is hitting .242 with six homers and 23 RBI.

    Game of the day

New York Rangers at New Jersey Devils (-120, 4.5)

    Notable quotable

"I can't come to terms with a guy declining or not being what they're supposed to be. I won't do it. I remember us talking about Derek Jeter last year, people just basically destroying him, and I wouldn't accept it. And I'm not going to accept Alex Rodriguez or Mark Teixeira. They're better than this. They're going to work their tails off, and they're going to get it done." - New York Yankees hitting coach Kevin Long on his team’s early offensive troubles. While Teixeira continues to struggle, A-Rod came alive with two homers in Wednesday’s win over the Royals. The Yanks still rank second in the majors with 65 home runs and sit fifth with a .264 batting average.

    Notes and tips

The Chicago White Sox have scratched Friday’s scheduled starter, John Danks, and reportedly called up lefty Jose Quintana to fill his spot as Danks is headed to the DL with a shoulder injury. Danks signed a $65-million contract extension in the offseason, but has struggled early this year with a 5.70 ERA. Quintana came out of the bullpen and threw 5 1/3 innings against the Cleveland Indians earlier in May, giving up just one hit.

Doug O'Neill, the trainer of Triple Crown hopeful I'll Have Another, was suspended 45 days by the California Horse Racing Board on Thursday because one of his horses exceeded the allowable limit for total carbon dioxide. However, the punishment won't begin before July 1, allowing him to saddle I'll Have Another in the June 9 Belmont Stakes. I'll Have Another is favored at 13/10 after winning the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness.

The team that has scored the first goal in the last 13 contests the New York Rangers have played have gone on to win the contest. The Rangers dug themselves a 3-0 hole in Game 5 at home to the New Jersey Devils Wednesday night. After crawling all the way back to tie the game early in the third period, New Jersey’s Ryan Carter scored the game winning goal with less than five minutes remaining in regulation to boost the Devils to a 5-3 victory.

The Boston Celtics aren’t expecting to have shooting guard Avery Bradley in the lineup for Saturday’s Game 7 against the Philadelphia 76ers – or for any other game in the post season should they advance. Bradley’s left shoulder popped out twice during this series and he could be going under the knife.

      Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

We're going to go thru the over/under win totals for each NFL team in this space over the next week, division-by-division. Today, the AFC North:

-- Baltimore, 10, under -$120-- Defense needs to get younger.

-- Cincinnati, 7.5, over -$130-- Can Dalton avoid sophomore jinx?

-- Cleveland, 5.5, under -$130-- How soon does Weeden start at QB?

-- Pittsburgh, 10, over -$125-- Did they improve offensive line?

      *************

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random thoughts with the weekend here.....

      13) Albert Pujols hit his 4th homer in nine games Thursday, now has 17 RBI in his last 18 games; people in Anaheim can stop panicking.

      12) Further proof the world is going crazy: Lawrence Taylor gave one of his Super Bowl rings to his son, who put it up for auction; turns out the lucky buyer was Charlie Sheen, as once again, worlds collide.

      11) Mets' 1B Ike Davis had a pinch-hit single Thursday, making him 5-62 (.081) at home. He's hitting .229 on the road.

      10) Read a lot this week about the death of Bill Stewart, the West Virginia football coach who had a heart attack and passed at age 59; read how a lot of people who knew him claimed that every time they met him, it seemed like the best day of his life, he was always that upbeat.

Now thats a rare gift thats more unusual than physical skills; wish I had it. Its too bad the school tossed him aside last year. May he rest in peace.

      9) Even further proof the world is going crazy: A kid from Long Beach, CA was sent to jail for sexual assault long time ago; he just recently got out, at which point the girl who accused him friended him on Facebook, admitting she made whole thing up, but fearful she'll have to repay the $1.5M she won when she sued the Long Beach School District after the guilty verdict.

Meanwhile, the kid who went to jail is now 26 and still hopes to play in the NFL; he was going to USC before his legal problems. This is a movie just waiting to be written; hopefully the guy will get a chance at a good life, as he was robbed out of some of the best years of his life.

      8) Three college baseball programs are tied for the lead in alumni who have played major league baseball; Arizona State-USC-Texas all have 100.

      7) Weird baseball night on a short card Thursday, with four of seven games having 15+ runs scored; some terrible baseball in Padre-Met and in Miami at the Giant-Marlin game. Looked like lot of mentally tired players.

      6) Joe Sheehan writes about baseball for Sports Illustrated; he came up with an interesting fact last night; of the 71 batters Jonathan Papelbon faced this season, he has faced a #3 hitter only twice and a cleanup hitter only twice.

      5) Braves lost five of their last six games, scoring total of 12 runs.

      4) I've said this before, but as much as I love basketball, best-of-7 series in the NBA aren't interesting, the better team almost always wins. Playoffs in the NHL are interesting because there are upsets (See Kings, LA). The odd bounces a hockey puck takes make each game totally unique.

March is a great month because every NCAA tournament game has so much potential drama; there is so little of that in the NBA playoffs.

      3) I'm thinking the NFL would've been better off letting the Saints players slide in the Bountygate issue; punishing the coaches was enough. Now it is a huge issue that won't go away easily, especially with the Super Bowl on Bourbon Street this year.

      2) San Antonio Spurs won eight of their last ten games with the Thunder, with the average of the eight wins by 9.6 points.

      1) Chris Christie is the governor of New Jersey; he wants to make betting on sports legal in his state, quickly, like by the start of the NFL season. It will be interesting to see how the feds react to that, especially in an election year. Most people in New Jersey want sports betting to be legal, and once they get it, it'll spread like wildfire, since everyone will want their piece of the huge financial pie that sports betting will bring. Interesting stuff.

Public opinion: Friday's top consensus bets

        NHL:

New York Rangers at New Jersey Devils (-120, 4.5)

When the New York Rangers fell behind 3-0 to New Jersey Wednesday, it looked like the writing was on the wall. However, they battled back to tie the game only to watch Ryan Carter snap the tie late in regulation. Now they face elimination yet again. Henrik Lundqvist was off his game Wednesday and will need to bounce back quickly. So far, the slightest majority of bettors are expecting another Game 7.

        Consensus: Rangers 52 percent/Devils 48 percent

        MLB:

Houston Astros at Los Angeles Dodgers (-225, 6)

The Houston Astros are just a couple games under .500 this year, but still have a terrible time on the road. They have just five victories as visitors this season and could be hard pressed to add to that total Friday. The Dodgers have won six of their last seven and send Clayton Kershaw to the hill against Houston. Kershaw is coming off a complete-game shutout and has allowed only two runs in his last three starts.

        Consensus: Dodgers 62 percent/Astros 48 percent

Rangers @ Devils (3-2)-- While these two rivals pummel each other, LA Kings (12-2 in playoffs) sit out west awaiting winner; Devils were shut out in both of their losses in series, pair of 3-0 games that were scoreless after second period, which means they've won all three games they scored in. New Jersey won seven of its last nine games; they're 2-20 on power play this series, New York is 4-13. Rangers are 10-9 in playoffs; under is 9-3-5 in their last 17 games. Devils scored two goals in first 4:13 last game; they had five goals on 17 shots. Eight of twelve Ranger goals in this series came in third period. Rangers were in this identical situation in Ottawa series, down 3-2, so they know this is doable.

Rangers at Devils: What bettors need to know
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Rangers at New Jersey Devils (-120, 4.5)

          THE STORY
: The New Jersey Devils couldn't have imagined at the outset of the playoffs that they would play a home game for the chance to advance to their first Stanley Cup finals in nearly a decade. And yet, that's where the Devils find themselves as they prepare to host the New York Rangers in Game 6. New Jersey put itself in position to represent the East in the finals with a hard-fought 5-3 win in Game 5, improving to 7-0 when leading after two periods so far in the postseason.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBCS, CBC

ABOUT THE RANGERS: Ryan Callahan isn't making any promises. The New York Rangers captain knows all about the guarantee Mark Messier made shortly before Game 6 of the 1994 Eastern Conference finals. Messier, the Rangers' captain at the time, vowed his club would beat the Devils - then went out and had a hat trick as New York won the game 4-2 and went on to capture its first Stanley Cup title in 54 years. When asked if he planned to make his own prediction, Callahan said simply: "No." Teammate Brad Richards went into more detail. "No disrespect to history but we're worried about our own team," he said.

ABOUT THE DEVILS: The only member of either team to appear in the 1994 series: New Jersey netminder Martin Brodeur, who let a 2-0 lead slip away in that infamous sixth game after allowing a soft goal to Alexei Kovalev that set the stage for Messier's heroics. Now 40, Brodeur is doing a good job of keeping things in perspective. "This situation is what creates history," he said. "Whatever happens in the next few days is what this rivalry is all about." Brodeur made 25 saves in the Game 5 victory, outdueling Rangers counterpart Henrik Lundqvist for his 110th career postseason victory.

          TRENDS:
          - Rangers are 3-9 in their last 12 playoff games as an underdog.
          - Devils are 5-1 in their last six home games.
          - The under is 9-3-9 in the Rangers' last 21 overall.

          OVERTIME:

          1. The Rangers are 5-2 in games following a loss so far this postseason.

          2. Lundqvist has allowed seven goals over a two-game span - something that happened just five times in the regular season.

          3. Devils F Zach Parise has three goals and two assists in the past two games after registering just one helper in his previous five contests.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Friday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Streaking

Josh Johnson, Miami Marlins (2-3, 4.82 ERA)

Johnson was a nightmare for his supporters early this season, but seems to be rounding into form now. He has won two straight starts and hasn’t allowed more than two runs in his three trips to the hill, while striking out 16 batters during that stretch. Johnson supporters are down just 0.59 units heading into Friday’s start.

Bruce Chen, Kansas City Royals (3-4, 4.17 ERA)

Chen lost each of his first four starts before turning it around to win three straight. He has only been hit hard twice this season and is working on a 2.75 ERA in his last three while striking out 16 and walking four. The Royals are finally giving him some run support, averaging 4.7 runs during his winning streak which is up from an average of 2.9 runs on the year.

                  Slumping

Ian Kennedy, Arizona Diamondbacks (3-4, 4.47 ERA)

Kennedy allowed six earned runs in his shortest outing of the season last weekend, going just 4 1/3 innings before getting the hook. The Diamondbacks have lost each of his last five starts, though he was hardly to blame for the first two. Kennedy’s last three starts have been a different story, with the California native giving up 14 earned runs and five dingers over that span.

Anthony Swarzak, Minnesota Twins (0-3, 4.73 ERA)

Swarzak was demoted to the bullpen after three tough starts to begin the season, but the Twins are putting him back in the rotation as they search for some major starting pitcher help. He lost each of his first three starts while posting a 6.75 ERA and giving up five home runs. In his last relief appearance, he yielded two runs over 2 1/3 during a blowout loss to Milwaukee.
