Thursday’s betting tips: Heat suspensions move line

    Weather to watch

Detroit Tigers at Cleveland Indians – 11 mph winds are expected to blow out to centerfield.

    Who’s hot

NBA: The Heat are 14-5 ATS in their last 19 playoff games as a favorite.

MLB: The over is 18-7-1 in the Mets’ last 26 overall.

MLB: The Reds are 19-7 in Homer Bailey's last 26 home starts.

WNBA: Lynx are 21-7 ATS in their last 28 home games.

    Who’s not

NBA: The under is 5-11 in the Pacers' last 16 games as an underdog.

MLB: The Angels are 7-15 in their last 22 road games.

MLB: The White Sox are 3-13 in Philip Humber's last 16 home starts.

WNBA: Sparks are 5-21-1 ATS in their last 27 games following a ATS win.

    Key stat

2.51 – The Pittsburgh Pirates’ bullpen is working on a 2.51 ERA this season, ranking first in the National League and tied for third overall in the majors ahead of Wednesday’s action. That bullpen has done more than its share to keep Pirates supporters above water. Pittsburgh has earned 1.74 units for its bettors.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Danny Granger, Indiana Pacers – Granger left Tuesday’s game early in the second half with a sprained left ankle but said he expects to play Thursday’s game against the Miami Heat. However, he didn’t practice Wednesday and there are some concerns about his status. Granger had a team-high 10 points before leaving with the injury.

    Game of the day

Miami Heat at Indiana Pacers (+3, 182)

    Notable quotable

"We like being the underdog, being in the other guy's barn, getting booed. We love that." – Los Angeles Kings defenseman Drew Doughty after the club eliminated the Phoenix Coyotes to advance to the Stanley Cup final. The Kings are now set as -167 favorites to win the Cup. They will face off against either the New York Rangers (+240) or the New Jersey Devils (+400).

    Notes and tips

The NBA has suspended Miami Heat forward Udonis Haslem for one game and Heat forward Dexter Pittman for three games for their retaliatory flagrant fouls in Tuesday's Game 5 of their series against the Indiana Pacers. As a result, Haslem, who has been a key component of the Miami team with Chris Bosh out with an abdominal injury, will miss Game 6 against the Pacers on Thursday. Most books moved the Pacers from 3.5-point underdogs to 3-point dogs after the news was released.

The Minnesota Twins send 27-year-old Cole De Vries to the mound Thursday for his first MLB start as he fills Jason Marquis’ roster spot. He has extensive experience in the minors, going 32-42 in Double-A and Triple-A starts with a 4.01 ERA over six seasons. With a mid-80s fastball, some wonder whether he has big-league stuff, although he has walked only seven batters this season. Oddsmakers had the Twins set as +140 underdogs against the White Sox as of Wednesday evening.

Green Bay outside linebacker Clay Matthews collected most of his 29.5 sacks lined up on the left side, but he's on the move to make room for rookie Nick Perry. Matthews and Perry will be interchangeable but the base formation calls for Matthews to move to right outside linebacker. He'll take on more elite pass blockers, but Perry's size and mass make him the ideal fit on the "power" side of the defensive formation.

The Minnesota Lynx have picked up right where they left off last season, winning and covering in their first two games of the year. They are coming off an 80-62 blowout of the New York Liberty and opened as 8-point favorites at home to the Los Angeles Sparks Thursday evening. The Sparks are also 2-0 straight up and against the spread this year.

      Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

We're going to go thru the over/under win totals for each NFL team in this space over the next week, division-by-division. Today, the AFC East:

-- Buffalo, 7, under -$120-- Lot of faith in Ryan Fitzpatrick......

-- Miami, 7.5, under -$120-- New coach, apathetic fans. whos the QB?

-- New England, 12, over -$120-- Early favorite to win Super Bowl.

-- NJ Jets, 8.5-- Played in AFC title game two of last three years.

      ******************

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind.........

      13) The one phrase you don't want to hear in the dentist's chair: "I'm going to send you to a root canal specialist." Translated: $1,000 tab at a place where they don't take your insurance. Outstanding.

      12) To further my good mood, the first two batters in the A's lineup are hitting .199 and .175; their starting 3B is hitting .127. Why do they have to bat Coco Crisp second? Why did they pay him $7M this year?

      11) There are 18 teams in the Big East for basketball this year, before Pitt-Syracuse bolt for the ACC; they want all 18 teams in the Big East tourney, which is going to make the event six days long. Very cumbersome.

      10) Six games in the Philly-Boston series; the team leading at halftime lost five of the six games. Highly unusual.

      9) Quite a turnaround for Seattle pitcher Kevin Millwood: after going 0-4, 6.68 in his first six starts, he's rallied to go 3-0, 0.41 in his last three.

      8) Red Sox have played 44 games this season; Scott Podsednik is already the sixth centerfielder Boston has used.

      7) Kid named Adam Smith scored 13.7 ppg for NC-Wilmington this season, their second-leading scorer; too bad he got poached by Virginia Tech's new coach, James Johnson, who is desperate for good players and got the kid to leave UNCW for an ACC school. One with a lousy hoop program.

This is a growing trend that is disturbing; schools in BCS leagues poaching the better players from mid-major programs. Seems more like major league baseball every year, and thats not a compliment.

      6) UNLV-Arizona are going to have a home/home series starting next year, for four years; never saw that when Tark/Lute were in charge. Lute Olson succeeded Jerry Tarkanian as coach at Long Beach State after Tark went to UNLV. Lets just say the two were never very close after that.

      5) Orlando Magic are going to interview Shaquille O'Neal for their GM job; if they hire him, a) I'll be glad he's off TV, because he's not good, b) I'll fall off my couch in shock. Whats the percentage of star players who because good executives? Thats two different skill sets.

      4) Tampa Bay Rays exceed expectations because they're not afraid to fail-- Carlos Pena was hitting .116 in May, so they batted him leadoff this week to shake him out of his slump, and its working. That might be some of the advantage of playing in a small market; less scrutiny if you take a chance and it fails. In NY/Boston, media would make too big a thing out of it.

      3) New Jersey Devils are now 14-6 in franchise history in Game 5's when a series is tied 2-2; thats a damn good record.

      2) Stanley Cup Finals start next Wednesday; that means the Kings will have eight days between games. Eastern champ will have home ice edge in Finals, but since LA is a ridiculous 8-0 on road in the playoffs, does it matter?

      1) On the bright side of the dentist visit; whoever invented novocaine has to get an award or something named after them. Think of the pain they have saved people. Its going to be a long week before I get the dreaded root canal; sounds like a lot of scrambled eggs are in my immediate future.

Public opinion: Thursday’s top consensus plays

        NBA:

Miami Heat at Indiana Pacers (+3.5, 182)

When LeBron James and Dwyane Wade are going at the same time, the Heat are pretty much unstoppable. That’s what we finally saw in Game 5. James nearly posted a triple-double and Wade had 28 points while the Heat shot a postseason-best .614 from the floor in a 115-83 victory. Maybe that was the breakthrough Heat bettors have been looking for.

        Consensus: Heat 60 percent/Pacers 40 percent

        MLB:

Detroit Tigers at Cleveland Indians (+135, 7)

Early bettors are jumping on the chance to take Justin Verlander and his Detroit Tigers at this price on the road. Verlander had a no-no broken up by a single in the ninth inning the last time he climbed the hill and Detroit has 16 of his last 21 road starts.

        Consensus: Tigers 62 percent/Indians 38 percent

          Armadillo's Write-Up

          Thursday, May 24

Miami is 14-28 behind arc in last two games, after going 5-42 in the first three; they shot 40%+ in their three series wins, under 38% in the two losses- they shot 61% last game. 15 of last 20 Miami games stayed under total. Haslem is out as well as Bosh, so Miami is smallish and thin inside. Will Indiana put up a fight or just submit meekly? Home crowd will help if they can get off to a decent start.

What bettors need to know: Thursday's NBA playoff action
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Heat at Indiana Pacers (+3.5, 182)

          THE STORY
: The Miami Heat are back to being the favorite in the Eastern Conference. Two straight transcendent performances from LeBron James and Dwyane Wade will do that. After combining for 70 points in a Game 4 win, the two stars went for “only” 58 but got plenty of help on both ends in a 115-83 demolition in Game 5. The Indiana Pacers added injury to insult on Tuesday, with both Danny Granger and David West going down with sprains.

          TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT THE HEAT: Miami looked lost without Chris Bosh in Games 2 and 3 but has found a nice balance in the last two, putting suffocating defense together with strong, efficient performances from Wade and James. The Heat shot a franchise playoff-record 61.4 percent from the field while holding Indiana to 33.7 percent in Game 5. Miami pushed the lead to as much as 37 points late in the fourth quarter en route to going up 3-2 in the series. The supporting cast has been unusually solid in the last two games, with Udonis Haslem playing well in both and Shane Battier stepping up with four 3-pointers in Game 5. Wade, who is reportedly dealing with a knee injury, was on the receiving end of a hard foul early that opened a cut above his eye but had little trouble the rest of the way.

ABOUT THE PACERS: Indiana’s chances rest on the tender ankle of Granger and sprained knee of West. Granger was injured in the first half and hobbled around for about three minutes after the break before sitting. X-rays were negative. West was injured at the end of the third quarter and did not attempt to continue with the game already out of hand. The two had scored only 10 points apiece at the time of their departure and were bested only by Paul George’s 11 in a terrible shooting performance. The Pacers will get the comfort of home, where they won Game 3 but lost Game 4, on Thursday.

          TRENDS:
          - Over is 11-5 in the Pacers' last 16 games as an underdog.
          - The Heat are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games as a favorite.
          - The underdog is 26-12-1 ATS in the last 39 meetings.

          BUZZER BEATERS:

          1. The Heat are 14 for 28 from 3-point range in the last two games after going 5 for 42 from beyond the arc in the first three contests.

          2. Pacers president Larry Bird called out his team after Game 5, saying, “I can’t believe my team went soft. S-O-F-T.”

          3. A total of three flagrant fouls were called in Game 5.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thursday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Streaking

Ryan Vogelsong, San Francisco Giants (2-2, 2.27 ERA)

Vogelsong shocked everybody and made the NL All-Star team last season. This year he’s right back at it, holding batters to a meager .214 average. He has also allowed only three runs over his last 24 1/3 innings. Vogelsong has had a few control issues, issuing at least three walks in three of his last four trips to the mound.

Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers (5-1, 2.14 ERA)

Verlander was denied his third career no-hitter last week, seeing his bid spoiled by a single in the ninth inning. He was dominant in the 6-0 victory over Pittsburgh, striking out 12 and walking only two. Verlander’s 68 strikeouts put him just one behind MLB-leader Gio Gonzalez and he has walked more than two batters only once in a start this year.

                  Slumping

Joe Blanton, Philadelphia Phillies (4-4, 3.74 ERA)

Blanton has been hot and cold and is coming off a tough loss to Boston. He surrendered nine hits and six earned runs in a 7-5 loss. Blanton served up four home runs in the loss, which snapped a stretch that saw him go 3-0 with a 2.10 ERA over four starts. We’ll see if he can get back to that form Thursday against the Cards.

Dan Haren, Los Angeles Angels (1-5, 4.37 ERA)

Haren showed some improvement last week, allowing three runs over 6 2/3 innings against San Diego, but still picked up his fourth consecutive loss. He still remains the league’s worst money pitcher (-12.30 units) by a wide margin and will need a lot of run support to dig out of that hole.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MLB's best and worst teams in one-run games
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Smoking, drinking and betting on these six baseball teams will take years off your life.

(Maybe that’s how Lindsay Lohan went from hot tamale to candied prune?)

These clubs have a flair for the dramatic and love taking MLB bettors - especially those playing the runline - for a wild ride during their many one-run games. Some close out those contests with a happy ending more often than not, while others leave you with empty pockets and handfuls of your own hair.

Here’s a look at the best and worst teams in one-run games so far this season. Stats compiled prior to Wednesday's action:

                    One-Run Winners

Tampa Bay Rays (10-3 in one-run games)

Over 29 percent of the Rays’ games have been decided by one run this year. Luckily, for Tampa Bay backers, their team has been successful with a slim margin on the scoreboard – and we stress “luckily”. The Rays boast the lowest batting average from the seventh inning on (.203) and don’t have a shutdown bullpen (3.68 ERA). However, they’ve suffered only two blown saves and have nasty strikeout ability, which bails them out of late-inning jams.

Cleveland Indians (9-2 in one-run games)

The Tribe are a pleasant surprise for American League Central bettors. Cleveland is leading the division by 3.5 games thanks to some clutch play in tight games. The Indians are among the best teams with two outs on the board, hitting .253 and scoring 68 runs with two away – second to only Texas in the AL. Those timely hits have been helped out by the bullpen, which is finally coming around thanks to a healthy Chris Perez handling the ninth inning.

Los Angeles Dodgers (13-6 in one-run games)

The Dodgers are another club shocking bettors with their early exploits. Los Angeles has marched to the top of the major leagues, squeaking out nearly half its wins in one-run fashion. Over 44 percent of the Dodgers’ games have been decided by a single score, with the nod going to a solid rotation (2.83 ERA) and terrific hitting with RISP (.277).

                    One-Run Wieners

Arizona Diamondbacks (4-11 in one-run games)

What a difference a year makes. Arizona’s improbable run to the NL West Pennant last season was fueled by a 28-16 record in one-run games. Now, the Diamondbacks are seeing the ugly side of those close contests. Arizona has come up short on both sides of the field. It continues to swing and miss in key situations, boasting the third-most strikeouts in the NL, and has watched its bullpen blow nine saves this season.

Los Angeles Angels (3-9 in one-run games)

The Halos have been anything but heavenly with a one-run spread on the scoreboard. Unlike their crosstown rivals, the Angels haven’t been able to get the big hit late in games. Los Angeles’ .250 average dips to .222 in the final three innings, where it has scored just 41 of its 159 total runs on the year – 26 percent. Add to those woes a bullpen that has chronic blown save issues (six on the year, tied for AL lead with 25 last year) and you have recipe for disaster.

Toronto Blue Jays (3-7 in one-run games)

The Jays haven’t been in as many one-run games as some of their counterparts, but that doesn’t make those seven losses any less painful. Toronto’s bullpen has been horrific for many years, and 2012 is no exception. However, a few of their seven blown saves can fall on the head of manager John Farrell, who sometimes over manages his relievers while trying to remind folks he knows a little something about pitching (former big-league pitcher, pitching coach).
