Tuesday's betting tips: L.A. Kings unblemished on road

    Weather to watch

Los Angeles Angels at Oakland Athletics – 14-mph winds will be blowing out to right. Skies will be clear, with temperatures in the high 50s.

    Who’s hot

NBA: Indiana is 4-0 ATS in its last four games playing on one day’s rest.

NHL: The Kings are 7-0 in their last seven road games.

MLB: Baltimore is 10-4 in Brian Matusz’s last 14 starts on four days’ rest.

MLB: Texas is 10-2 in Matt Harrison’s last 12 road starts.

    Who’s not

NBA: The over is 0-9 in Miami’s last nine home games vs. teams with winning road records.

NHL: The over is 1-6 in the Coyotes’ last seven games playing on one day’s rest.

MLB: Colorado is 1-6 in Juan Nicasio’s last seven road starts.

MLB: The White Sox are 0-7 in Gavin Floyd’s last seven starts vs. the Twins.

    Key stat

2 – That’s how many points Miami’s “other” players, those not named LeBron James or Dwyane Wade, scored in the second half of Sunday’s Game 4 win in Indianapolis. James and Wade combined for 53 of 55 points as the Heat tied the series 2-2. Host Miami is set as a 6.5-point favorite in Tuesday’s Game 5.

    Injuries that shouldn’t be overlooked

Angels outfielders Vernon Wells (thumb) and Ryan Langerhans (separated right shoulder) were placed on the DL Monday after both got hurt Sunday. Wells tore a ligament in his right thumb while trying to steal. He needs surgery and will be out at least 8-10 weeks. Langerhans ran into a wall chasing a double. He will not need surgery, but will be out for an extended period of time.

    Game of the day

Indiana Pacers at Miami Heat (-6.5, 180)

    Notable quotable

"I guess that's what sports are all about, trying to do something that someone hasn't done for a while, try to do things (when) the odds are kind of stacked against you. Nobody wants to be in the position we're in, but everybody wants to prove they can answer that call." – Coyotes captain Shane Doan, who scored both goals in Phoenix’s 2-0 win Sunday. The Coyotes still trail the series 3-1 heading into Tuesday’s Game 5 at home.

    Notes and tips

Cardinals first baseman Lance Berkman will miss at least 6-8 weeks with an injured right knee. The 36-year-old will undergo arthroscopic surgery this week. In Berkman's absence, Matt Adams and Matt Carpenter will get most of the starts at first base.

Heat guard Dwyane Wade would not say if his knee, which was drained of fluid last week, required extensive treatment before Tuesday’s Game 5 in Miami. Wade bounced back from a horrific Game 3 performance with 30 points, nine rebounds and six assists in Sunday’s Game 4 win. "I'm a no-excuse type person," Wade said. "When I'm on the basketball court, I'm all about trying to help my team win. Obviously, when things are going great, everyone pats you on the back. When things are not going great, some people turn their back. But I'm the kind of person who always believes in myself, believes in my teammates and knows that it can always turn around."

Tigers OF Austin Jackson, who has missed four straight games with a mild abdominal strain, is not certain to return to the lineup Tuesday when Detroit visits Cleveland in the opener of a three-game series. Jackson participated in pre-game drills over the weekend and should be back this week, if not Tuesday. "When I went to run, you know, try to get up to 80 percent at least, it didn't feel that good," Jackson said Sunday. "It was still kind of hurting to run, so that's why I'm thinking maybe a couple more days."

Nationals ace Stephen Strasburg left Sunday's win against the Orioles after five innings due to biceps tightness, but manager Davey Johnson said Strasburg should be able to make his next start. "The bicep is fine," Strasburg confirmed. "Starting out, I threw a lot of pitches early and then we put up a lot of runs. I got a little tired. [The bicep] got a little tight. It's nothing different than any other outing. It's probably gonna be like this for the rest of the year. It's all part of coming back from Tommy John [surgery]. It's something I have to be smart about."

      Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Not a gutty performance by the Lakers, who went down 106-90 to the Thunder in Oklahoma City, losing their series in five games.

-- Celtics were down 3 at the half, but Brandon Bass scored 22 points in second half as Boston pulled away from Philly, 101-85, taking a 3-2 lead in that series.

-- Devils beat the Rangers 4-1, tied that series 2-2. New York is only 10-8 in the playoffs, but they've still got a shot at the Stanley Cup.

-- Angels scored five runs in three straight losses at San Diego/Oakland, and Mickey Hatcher was nowhere to be found. Who gets fired now?

-- Stan Van Gundy has a .641 winning percentage as an NBA coach, but in the NBA, if a team's star wants you fired, you get fired. He'd be very good on TV, like his brother. Curious to see where he winds up.

-- Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of former West Virginia football coach Bill Stewart who died of a heart attack Monday, at age 59.

      ************

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

      13) In Jered Weaver’s first six starts, batters swung at 289 pitches, missed 60 times, an average of 10 misses per game, with a 20.8% whiff rate; the sixth start was his no-hitter.

In three starts since then, opponents have swung 108 times with only 12 misses (4 per game, whiff rate of 11.1%). Is it a coincidence?

      12) Speaking of the Angels, they’re 1-8 when Dan Haren starts, largely because they’ve scored 3 or less runs in eight of the nine games. In his last four starts, Halos scored 0-0-0-2 runs. Maybe Haren and Ervin Santana got Mickey Hatcher fired.

      11) Then there’s Ivan Nova, who got less than five runs of support from the Bronx Bombers in only one of his nine starts. Easier to pitch in some places than others, though the short dimensions in RF in the Bronx make pitching there a dicey proposition, too, for different reasons.

      10) Robinson Cano will be a free agent soon and he’s going to make a lot of money; Cano obviously, plays 2B and was named after Jackie Robinson, who played 2B (and 1B/OF) for the Dodgers. It wouldn’t be that surprising if Cano bolted the Bronx for Tinseltown, would it?

I mean, what if free agents started to see the Bombers as a sinking ship, with so much money tied up in aging/fading superstars (ARod/Jeter/ Teixeira) and a ballpark that free agent pitchers will want to avoid making half their starts in—would playing elsewhere seem like a better option?

      9) Why is Colorado wheeling 49-year old Jamie Moyer out to pitch every fifth day? Their team is awful; wouldn't it be smarter to give a young guy a little experience? Plus, they must have someone better than Moyer down on the farm, no?

      8) Hey!!! Wednesday is Free Slurpie Day at 7-11’s, from 11am-7pm.

      7) Pirate hitters swung at 63 of Max Scherzer’s pitches Sunday, and missed 26 times, an alarming rate; all 15 of his strikeouts were swinging. Of the 115 pitches Scherzer threw, Pittsburgh put only nine in play. Eeesh.

      6) Since getting pummeled at Fenway by the Indians couple weeks ago, Josh Beckett has righted the ship, allowing one run in 14.2 IP in his last two starts. Maybe they lifted the embargo on fried chicken and beer in the clubhouse (or maybe not).

      5) If I own the Orlando Magic, I hand Dwight Howard a clipboard and tell him to coach the damn team. Stan Van Gundy has a .641 winning %age, but Howard didn't want to play for him. Who does he want to play for? Thats the biggest problem the NBA has, inmates are running the asylums.

Actually, I could never own one of those teams, because I'd never fire this guy Van Gundy; he's an excellent coach. But you need players to win, you need players who buy in to what the coach is teaching.

      4) My goal for the 2012 A’s was to be a contender when Manny Ramirez became eligible after 50 games; a modest goal, but this is a team with a very modest payroll. They’re 22-21 and hanging in there; but they need a productive Manny batting behind a healthy Cespedes.

Without those two producing, it’ll be a long summer, even after an uplifting spring (to this point).

      3) Former NFL QB Jon Kitna is now a Math teacher and football coach at his old high school in Tacoma. Not many former NFL QBs live that normal a life after playing more than a decade in the league.

      2) If you don’t think Drew Brees is going to break the bank before training camp starts, think again: the Saints’ backup QB is Chase Daniel. How could they face their season ticket holders if they let Brees sit out this season, one where the Super Bowl is on Bourbon Street?

      1) It sucks to get swept, but the Clippers had a good season, just their third winning season since moving west from Buffalo. They won a playoff series, invigorated a depressed fan base and have stars to build around. Hopefully they’ll continue to build their team into a contender than can challenge the Lakers for supremacy in Hollywood.

Public opinion: Tuesday's best consensus plays

        NBA:

Indiana Pacers at Miami Heat (-6.5, 180.5)

Miami opened as a 7-point favorite in Game 5, and bettors quickly jumped on the Pacers. Indiana figures to go back to pounding the ball inside after getting away from its bread-and-butter in Sunday's Game 4 loss. Many bettors reason that LeBron James and Dwyane Wade aren't likely to go for 70 points again. Will any Heat role player step up?

        Consensus: Pacers 54 percent/Heat 45 percent

        NHL:

Los Angeles Kings at Phoenix Coyotes (115, 4.5)

The Kings are 7-0 on the road in the playoffs, and the public likes L.A. to continue that trend and close out the Coyotes in Game 5. But Phoenix has a hot goalie in Mike Smith, who turned away all 36 shots he faced in Game 4. He has three shutouts this postseason. Phoenix captain Shane Doan was reunited with linemates Mikkel Boedker and Antoine Vermette on Sunday; he responded by scoring twice.

        Consensus: Kings 60 percent/Coyotes 40 percent

        MLB:

Detroit Tigers at Cleveland Indians (-115, 8.5)

Early bettors love the Tigers to upend the first-place Indians, who are just 11-12 at home. Cleveland starter Ubaldo Jimenez has a 5.19 ERA and 1.62 WHIP over his last three starts. Detroit's Rick Porcello hasn't been much better lately, lasting a total of nine innings in his last two starts.

        Consensus: Tigers 74 percent/Indians 26 percent

Kings at Coyotes: What bettors need to know
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Kings at Phoenix Coyotes (115, 4.5)

          THE STORY
: With the Phoenix Coyotes facing an unceremonious sweep in the Western Conference finals, their captain stepped up to extend their season by at least two more days. With Shane Doan's two-goal performance leading Phoenix to its first win of the series, the Coyotes look to defend home ice as they entertain the Los Angeles Kings in Game 5 on Tuesday night. Netminder Mike Smith was sharp in the Game 4 victory and will need to be just as good if the Coyotes plan on returning to L.A.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, NBCS, CBC

ABOUT THE KINGS: Los Angeles is coming off a loss for just the second time this postseason, but the club doesn't seem overly concerned. That may be due, at least in part, to the fact that the Kings are 7-0 on the road in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Los Angeles had hoped to close things out Sunday afternoon but was stymied by Smith, who turned aside 36 shots. "He's been a great goalie for them all year," said Kings forward Dustin Penner. "As forwards, we've got to do something different, or a little bit better, to make him work harder, and not just be satisfied with getting the puck on net."

ABOUT THE COYOTES: Doan was the best skater on either team in Game 4 - and as head coach Dave Tippett pointed out, that wasn't all the veteran forward brought to the table. "You don't see all the things that happened behind the scenes in the dressing room, inspiration for the guys there, how much he cares about this team and winning," he said. "When you can do that behind-the-scenes stuff, bag it up with the on-the-ice stuff, it speaks volumes for who he is." The 35-year-old Doan has been with the club since it moved from Winnipeg to Phoenix in 1996, and is competing in his first-ever conference finals.

          TRENDS:

*Kings are 7-0 in their last seven road games.
*Coyotes are 2-5 in their last seven games as home dogs.
*Under is 6-1 in Phoenix's last seven games playing on one day's rest.
*Under is 5-2 in the last seven meetings.

          OVERTIME:

          1. Game 4 marked the first time the Kings had been shut out in a playoff game since losing 4-0 to the Colorado Avalanche on April 29, 2002.

          2. The Kings are 10-8 all-time in the playoffs in potential close-out games.

          3. Doan's first-period power-play goal ended a string of 30 straight penalty kills by the Kings.

Miami is 10-55 behind arc in series, though they did improve to 5-12 last game; they shot 40%+ in their two series wins, under 38% in the two losses. 12 of last 15 Miami games stayed under total. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Indiana Pacers at Miami Heat (-6.5, 180)

            THE STORY
: Just when everybody was jumping off the bandwagon, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade went out and showed why they are considered two of the very best players in the NBA. The two combined for 70 points in Game 4 and dominated the second half to lead the Miami Heat to a 101-93 victory, evening the series at 2-2. The Indiana Pacers had controlled the inside in Games 2 and 3 but struggled in Game 4.

            TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE PACERS: Indiana made it a point to establish Roy Hibbert and kept going back to him in Game 3, leading to 19 points and 18 rebounds from the big man in a strong effort. The Pacers got him the ball a few times in the first quarter for easy buckets in Game 4 but stopped going to that well as Miami pulled them out of their halfcourt game and spread the floor with a small lineup. Indiana is going to need more from David West, who was held to a series-low eight points on Sunday, and Hibbert down low, as they were outscored in the paint 50-32 in Game 4. Part of that has to do with the defense, which had done a fine job of keeping James and Wade out of the paint until the second half Sunday, when both had little trouble getting to the rim.

ABOUT THE HEAT: James went for 40 points, 18 rebounds and nine assists on Sunday, scoring or assisting on 61.4 percent of Miami’s points. Wade was nearly as strong, shaking off a terrible performance in Game 3 with 30 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Perhaps more importantly, the two found a reliable third scorer in Udonis Haslem, who chipped in 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting. With Chris Bosh still out, any points from Haslem, Mario Chalmers, Mike Miller or Shane Battier are a big bonus. Miami was also better from the outside in Game 4, connecting on 5 of 12 3-pointers after going a combined 5 for 42 in the first three games.

            TRENDS:

*Heat is 5-1 ATS in its last six home games.
*Under is 5-0 in Pacers' last five games playing on one day's rest.
*Underdog is 26-11-1 ATS in the last 38 meetings.
*Pacers are 4-1 ATS in their last five games as road dogs.

            BUZZER BEATERS:

            1. Pacers swingman Danny Granger was hit with his second technical foul in as many games Sunday.

            2. Wade went 2 of 6 from the free throw line Sunday, his fourth game this postseason hitting less than 70 percent from the stripe.

            3. Indiana got 34 points off the bench in Game 4.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Streaking

Brandon Beachy, Atlanta Braves (5-1, 1.33 ERA)

The 25-year-old right-hander, who’s coming off a five-hit shutout of Miami, leads the majors in ERA and ranks fifth with a WHIP of 0.89. He went to a 3-ball count only once against the Marlins. Since the franchise moved to Atlanta, Beachy is the third Brave to post an ERA under 1.50 in his first eight starts of a season. The league is batting .177 against him.

Aaron Harang, Los Angeles Dodgers (3-2, 3.83 ERA)

Harang has turned around his season over the last three starts, tossing 21 innings while allowing three runs on 15 hits. He’s gone at least six innings in six of his past seven starts. However, current D-Backs are hitting .306 against the 34-year-old right-hander.

                    Slumping

Matt Moore, Tampa Bay Rays (1-4, 5.20 ERA)

The 22-year-old lefty has served up eight homers this season, including two in his last outing vs. the Red Sox. He has an unsightly WHIP of 1.58, and has lasted six innings only once in his last five starts. Moore has tremendous potential, but has not yet developed command of his outstanding stuff.

Adam Wainwright, St. Louis Cardinals (2-5, 5.77 ERA)

Batters are hitting .298 against Wainwright, whose comeback from Tommy John surgery has been rocky. The 30-year-old right-hander is struggling with his control. He’s yielded nine walks in his last two starts, while striking out six. But lifetime he’s 2-1 with a 1.46 ERA in six starts against San Diego.

Rounding the bases: This week's best MLB betting trends
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in Major League Baseball (Records updated through Sunday):

                      HOT TEAM: Minnesota Twins

                      THIS SEASON: 14-27
                      LAST WEEK: 5-2

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: At the White Sox for three, home to the Tigers for three.

THE SKINNY: We won’t have many opportunities to put Minnesota in this tax bracket, so let’s do it while we can. The Twins took a four-game winning streak into Sunday’s series finale with Milwaukee. Minnesota scored 31 runs in those four games.

Closer Matt Capps hasn't been great this season, but he's rounding into form. He snared two saves in those four games and has allowed just one run in his last eight innings of work. If the bullpen continues to hold up its end of the bargain, the Twins might actually be up to something because their offense has been going.

Josh Willingham and Ryan Doumit topped the RBI leaderboard at 24, and Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau, both slowly on their way back to the norm, have combined for 34 more. You can do worse, value considered, than riding a team like the Twins these days.

                      COLD TEAM: Chicago Cubs

                      THIS SEASON: 15-26
                      LAST WEEK: 2-5

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: At the Astros for three, at the Pirates for three.

THE SKINNY: Lost amid the attention given to Kerry Wood and his emotional exit from the game this weekend is the fact that the Cubs aren’t playing very well, with or without Wood.

Chicago took a five-game skid into Sunday’s series finale with the White Sox and three of those losses were of the excruciating, one-run variety. The pitching staff has been knocked around, allowing 34 runs in those five games and Wood’s presence - as a leader and a source to lean on in good times and bad - will be missed.

As for who's left, the Cubs have five pitchers - Paul Maholm, Jeff Samardzija, Ryan Dempster, Matt Garza and Chris Volstad - who have allowed at least three home runs, and even more alarming is that Chicago has seven pitchers with ERAs north of 5.00. That’s not going to get it done in the National League, no matter what tricks general manager Theo Epstein has up his sleeve.

                      OVER TEAM: New York Mets

                      O/U THIS SEASON: 25-15-1
                      O/U LAST WEEK: 5-2

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: At the Pirates for three, home to the Padres for four.

THE SKINNY: The Mets appear to be one thing, one day - like in a 15-4 loss to Toronto Friday - and another thing the next day - like in a 2-0 loss to Toronto Saturday.

The pitching staff runs hot and cold but the sticks have been there for the most part, and the Mets have become a nice over play as a result. New York has scored seven or more runs four times in May and David Wright - .409 average, four home runs, 22 RBIs, four steals - is having a season to remember.

If they can find a way to limit the strikeouts, they'll be even more potent. Kirk Nieuwenhuis (47), Ike Davis (39), and Lucas Duda (36) have all been sent back to the dugout with their heads down far too often. But all told, the Mets are an interesting team and should be on your over radar.

                      UNDER TEAM: New York Yankees

                      O/U THIS SEASON: 16-24-1
                      O/U LAST WEEK: 2-5

THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: Home to the Royals for three, at the Athletics for three.

THE SKINNY: There are issues to be addressed on the mound, but Andy Pettitte eased concerns when he pitched a 4-0 shutout of Cincinnati Friday night. And with some adequate starts from the staff, combined with a light lineup, the Yankees have turned into a surprisingly decent under team.

It helps to have the cushion of public perception. The Yankees are usually in the 9.5-run range with their totals and this week, they stayed right under that line a few times.

What doesn't seem to be changing anytime soon is that Mark Teixeira - .228 average overall and no home me runs in this last 10 games - is a mess, and four players - Curtis Granderson (45), Alex Rodriguez (31), Nick Swisher (28) and Russell Martin (25) - might be at 75-plus strikeouts by the All-Star break.

But that's not your problem. Their deficiencies should be your gain. The Yankees as an under buy is something to consider.

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
