Sunday’s betting tips: Clips struggle ATS in back-to-backs

    Weather to watch

Baltimore Orioles at Washington Nationals – 12 mph winds are expected to blow in from right-centerfield.

    Who’s hot

NBA: Pacers are 5-2 ATS in their last seven games overall.

NBA: Spurs are 17-6-3 ATS in their last 26 road games.

NHL: Kings are 20-6 in their last 26 overall.

MLB: The home team is 39-17 in umpire Tony Randazzo's last 56 games behind home plate. He is scheduled to work Sunday's Reds-Yankees matchup.

    Who’s not

NBA: Heat are 1-5 ATS in their last six road games

NBA: Clippers are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games in the second half of back-to-back situations.

NHL: Coyotes are 1-4 in their last five games as an underdog.

MLB: Pirates are 8-47 in their last 55 interleague road games.

    Key stat

24 – The San Antonio Spurs reeled off 24 consecutive points in Saturday’s third-quarter comeback win over the Los Angeles Clippers, who went 0-for-12 during San Antonio’s run. The Spurs also trailed by 22 points after the first quarter and now hold the playoff record for the biggest comeback after one quarter.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Emilio Bonifacio, Miami Marlins – The Fish could be without their table-setter for a while as outfielder Emilio Bonifacio is expected to land on the 15-day DL with a thumb injury. Bonifacio leads the bigs with 20 stolen bases and is hitting .268.

    Game of the day

Miami Heat at Indiana Pacers (+2, 178)

    Notable quotable

"Me and coach have been together for nine years in some capacity. We've had many different conversations, some like that and some not. It wasn't the first, it won't the last. We know how to move on from things and we know each other wants the best for each other. There's no harm done. We're a family." – Dwyane Wade after his altercation with Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra in Game 3’s blowout loss to the Pacers.

    Notes and tips

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving early Saturday morning in New York. Jones was arrested at 5:02 a.m. ET after he crashed his Bentley, according to the Binghamton Police Department, ESPN.com reported. Jones and the passengers in his car were not injured and an investigation is ongoing. Jones (16-1) won the 205-pound UFC title last year by stopping Mauricio Rua and has defended the title three times since. His next bout is scheduled for Sept. 1 against Dan Henderson.

The Minnesota Lynx begin their WNBA title defenses Sunday in a home matchup with Phoenix. The Lynx, which are 20-7 against the spread in their last 27 home games, opened as 10.5-point favorites against the Mercury. The total is pegged at 174 points.

Cleveland Indians pitchers have walked 154 batters this season. Among American League teams, only Toronto (160) has walked more. Making that statistic even more distressing for the Indians is that the top two starters in their rotation both rank in the top three in the league in walks. No. 2 starter Ubaldo Jimenez leads the league in walks and No. 1 starter Justin Masterson is tied for third in the league in walks.

      Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- Chipper Jones is hurt again; Braves are 19-5 when he plays, 6-11 when he doesn't. Uh-oh.

-- Since start of interleague play many years ago, American League DHs have hit .276, NL designated hitters have hit only .251.

-- Indians are catching on in Cleveland; their walk-up ticket sale Friday was over 6,000, one of top ten nights in history of Jacobs Field.

-- White Sox won 13 of their last 15 games against the Cubs.

-- Can anyone give me one reason why Aroldis Chapman isn't the closer for the Reds? He is an intimidating figure on the mound.

-- AL is 18-10 vs NL in first two nights of interleague play, 9-5 on both Friday/Saturday. Over is 10-6 in NL parks, 5-7 in AL parks.

      ************

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.........

      13) Four weeks after hiring 71-year old nomad Larry Brown as basketball coach, SMU fired AD Steve Orsini, even though he had a contract that runs thru 2015. Apparently, hiring Brown was the school president's brilliant idea, and not Orsini's, so he has that going for him.

      12) Good news for the CAA, as George Mason stays in the league, which has already lost Georgia State/VCU/Old Dominion this spring.

      11) November’s Atlantis tournament in the Bahamas had UConn, Florida State and Harvard LY; their field this November will be much stronger— Louisville-Duke-Stanford-Missouri-Minnesota-Memphis-VCU-Northern Iowa. One of those teams is going home 0-3.

      10) Sportsbooks made out on the Heat-Pacer game Thursday; Indiana opened as a slight favorite, but Miami wound up a 2.5-point favorite. Takes lot of money to move a line that much.

      9) This is how good the NBA is: James Harden doesn’t start for Oklahoma City, but he was a huge star at Arizona State, the Sun Devils were 20-16 in Pac-10 play in his two years there. In three years since Harden left, ASU is 21-33 in conference play.

      8) Speaking of Arizona State, they’re in a tournament at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas in November, with Creighton-Arkansas-Wisconsin. A Wisconsin-ASU game could be very, very low scoring. Arkansas-Wisconsin would be a tremendous contrast in style. Like Halle Barry vs Roseanne Barr.

      7) Since the start of the 2011 season, Alex Rodriguez has only 21 homers; his slugging %age/OPS have gone down every year the last five years. Good thing he doesn't have $135M left on his contr--whoops, forget I said that.

      6) Umpire Bob Davidson was suspended for Friday night’s game, due to inadequate “situation handling”, according to the MLB office. Wish we had more information on this one, but tossing Charlie Manuel from a game last week when Manuel never left the dugout was said to be the last straw. .

      5) Cincinnati Reds are staying in New York City from Wednesday-Sunday, making them the first team to play Mets/Bronx Bombers in the Big Apple in the same week.

      4) When Octavio Dotel got his first save for the Tigers, it was the 9th team he’s saved a game for, tying him with Goose Gossage for the most teams having saved a game for. Also means Dotel didn’t get a save for four of the teams he pitched for.

      3) Just for the record and because I'm amused by trivia, Kevin Durant's one year as a Texas Longhorn ended with an 87-68 loss to USC in second round of NCAAs. Texas was a 2.5-point favorite in that game; they had beaten New Mexico State by 12 in the first round (79-67, -9.5).

      2) Greedy bastard update: Woman I work with was in San Francisco Easter weekend; gas was $4.53 in the Bay Area. Yikes. Price of gas has dropped 18 cents a gallon here in 13 days, and is now $3.91 a gallon.

      1) On March 21, Boris Diaw was waived by the hideously awful Charlotte Bobcats, who went 7-59 this season. Two days later, he signed on with the Spurs, who are on a 17-game winning streak. Not that he needs the money, because he makes $9M a year, but Diaw should go buy a lottery ticket.

Public opinion: Sunday's best consensus plays

        NBA:

Miami Heat at Indiana Pacers (2, 177.5)

The Miami Heat were held to 75 points for the second game in a row, getting blown out 94-75 Thursday evening. Dwyane Wade managed just five points on 2-of-13 shooting from the floor and Indiana put it away with a 19-3 run in the third quarter. Oddsmakers had the Pacers set as 1.5-point underdogs at the open.

        Consensus: Heat 52 percent/Pacers 48 percent

        NHL:

Phoenix Coyotes at Los Angeles Kings (-210, 4.5)

The Kings look poised to make their first trip to the Stanley Cup finals since a Wayne Gretzky-led squad fell to the Montreal Canadiens in 1993. The Kings haven’t allowed more than two goals in a contest since the first round. The under has cashed in seven of Los Angeles’ 12 playoff games.

        Consensus: Kings 63 percent/Coyotes 37 percent

        MLB:

Los Angeles Angels at San Diego Padres (+110, N/A)

After losing six consecutive starts to begin the season, Ervin Santana has finally turned the corner. The Angels starter has allowed only two earned runs over his last 15 innings on the hill. He blanked the A’s over 7 2/3 innings Tuesday while striking out nine.

        Consensus: Angels 72 percent/Padres 28 percent

Coyotes at Kings: What bettors need to know
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phoenix Coyotes at Los Angeles Kings (-220, 4.5)

          THE STORY
: The Los Angeles Kings have crafted one of the most dominant playoff performances in recent memory, leaving them a win away from reaching the Stanley Cup finals for the first time in 19 years. They'll get their first crack at it Sunday afternoon as they entertain the Phoenix Coyotes in Game 4 of the Western Conference finals. A capacity crowd is expected at the Staples Center, which has already seen plenty of playoff action this weekend and could be the site of the Kings' biggest win since 1993.

TV: 3 p.m. ET, NBC, CBC

ABOUT THE COYOTES: Little has gone right for Phoenix in the conference finals. After coming in on a high following a six-game elimination of the Nashville Predators, the Coyotes' vaunted defense has been overmatched by a deep, speedy Kings roster that has generated 116 shots through the first three games of the series. Coach Dave Tippett noted that his club took several penalties in the third period of Game 3 that perhaps shouldn't have been called. "The game is turning a little dishonest and it's embellishment by players," Tippett said. "When it's done well, it's very hard for the referees, very hard."

ABOUT THE KINGS: Given the way Los Angeles has played this postseason, it's easy to forget that the club came into the Stanley Cup tournament as the eighth seed in the West. And yet, despite having to tangle with the top three teams in the conference, the Kings are just the third team in NHL history to take 3-0 leads in each of its first three series. Los Angeles failed to close out Vancouver at home, dropping Game 4 of its first-round series for its only loss of the playoffs. The Kings used home-ice to beat the St. Louis Blues in the fourth game of round two and will look to do the same against the Coyotes.

          TRENDS:
          - The under is 6-1-2 in the last nine meetings in Los Angeles.
          - Coyotes are 1-5 in the last six meetings in Los Angeles.
          - Kings are 20-6 in their last 26 overall.

          OVERTIME:

          1. The 1995 Detroit Red Wings and 2008 Pittsburgh Penguins both opened with 3-0 leads in their first three best-of-seven series. Both teams went on to lose in the Stanley Cup finals.

          2. The Kings have gone without a power-play goal in eight of their 12 postseason games, including an 0-for-5 effort in their 2-1 victory in Game 3.

          3. Coyotes F Martin Hanzal returns to the lineup after serving a one-game suspension for boarding Kings captain Dustin Brown in the third period of Game 2.

            Armadillo's Write-Up

            Sunday, May 20

Heat @ Pacers (2-1)-- Miami will give its best shot here after they were exposed in Game 3, with Wade showing frustration over his dismal play. Heat is 4-7 when Bosh doesn't play; he's likely out for series. Miami is 5-43 behind arc in series; they made only 34.6%/37.2% from floor last two games, with subs 11-35, Wade 10-35. Indiana subs are -57 last two games, but starters just took heart out of Heat in 3rd quarter Thursday, outscoring Miami 26-12. 12 of last 14 Miami games stayed under total. Indy won six of last seven games since losing opener to Orlando. Miami lost two of three road games in playoffs.

Spurs (3-0) @ Clippers-- San Antonio hasn't lost since April 11; they've won 17 games in a row, and have only one playoff win (out of seven) by less than 10 points. Clippers led 33-11 after first quarter yesterday, still lost by 10; Paul is 12-39 from floor in series so far-- he is their engine, but is nowhere near 100%, so series probably ends here. Spurs had 24-0 run in 3rd quarter yesterday, holding Clippers to 8 points in 3rd quarter. No NBA team has ever won a playoff series after trailing 3-0.
If NHL game at Staples earlier in afternoon goes multiple overtimes, this game could get pushed back to Monday.

What bettors need to know: Sunday's NBA playoff action
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Heat at Indiana Pacers (2, 177.5)

            THE STORY
: It looks like the Miami Heat are on the verge of collapsing. The second-seeded and heavily-favored Heat were blown out in Game 3 and trail the Eastern Conference semifinals 2-1 to the Indiana Pacers. Chris Bosh has proven to be much more important than most had anticipated in his absence and Dwyane Wade and coach Eric Spoelstra got into a heated exchange in the third quarter on Thursday.

            TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC

ABOUT THE HEAT: Wade had one of the worst playoff games of his career on Thursday, going 2 for 13 from the floor and finishing with just five points. The star guard is reportedly dealing with a leg injury and has been receiving treatment. Bosh, who suffered an abdominal strain in Game 1, is not expected back in the next couple of games and LeBron James has clearly suffered from having to play defense on the interior. James scored just six points in the second half of Game 3 and has been knocked around in each of the last two games. Mario Chalmers, who kept Miami in Game 3 with 25 points, suffered a wrist injury late in the fourth quarter. X-rays were negative, but Chalmers was walking around with a large icepack after the contest. In an effort to regroup mentally and physically, the Heat cancelled practice and media availability on Friday.

ABOUT THE PACERS: There is little drama in the Indiana locker room at the moment. The one area that had been missing in the first two games - offensive production from Danny Granger - finally came around in the form of 17 points in Game 3 while the Pacers took advantage of Bosh’s absence by pounding the ball inside. Roy Hibbert starred with 19 points, a career-high 18 rebounds and five blocks while David West had another strong game and George Hill got hot from the outside. Indiana is playing tight team defense and has held the Heat to a combined 35.9 percent shooting in Games 2 and 3. San Antonio Spurs at Los Angeles Clippers (7.5, 190)

            THE STORY
: The Los Angeles Clippers landed their best punch and still couldn't slow the San Antonio Spurs. Because of that, the Spurs will have a chance to deliver a knockout blow to the Clippers in Game 4 of their Western Conference semifinal series Sunday night. Winners of 17 consecutive games, San Antonio roared back from a 24-point deficit Saturday to stun the deflated Clippers on their home floor and take a commanding 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

            TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE SPURS: Coming back from such a huge deficit is one thing, but the manner in which San Antonio did it was something to behold. Trailing by 12 in the third quarter, the Spurs ripped off 24 unanswered points to take a 12-point lead while holding the Clippers scoreless for over eight minutes. Tim Duncan, Danny Green and rookie Kawhi Leonard combined for 22 of the 24 points. Leonard had a stellar all-around game with 14 points, nine rebounds and two steals. He also nailed three 3-point attempts to help San Antonio finish 9 of 22 from behind the arc.

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS: Blake Griffin had his best performance since injuring his knee in the series against Memphis. He finished with 28 points and 16 rebounds, and scored 14 points to spark Los Angeles to a 33-11 first-quarter lead. Fellow All-Star Chris Paul, playing with a strained hip flexor, had 12 points and 11 assists but has scored a total of four points in the fourth quarter in the three games. Reserve guard Mo Williams helped pick up the slack with 19 points. After hitting nine 3-pointers in each of the first two games, Los Angeles connected on just three of nine attempts Saturday.

            TRENDS:
            - Spurs are 17-6-3 ATS in their last 26 road games.
            - Clippers are 2-6-2 ATS in their last 10 games as an underdog.
            - Spurs are 13-3 ATS in the last 16 meetings.

            BUZZER BEATERS:

            1. No team in NBA history has ever come back to win a series after trailing 3-0.

            2. San Antonio’s 17-game winning streak extending from the regular season into the playoffs is two shy of the NBA record set by the Los Angeles Lakers in 2001.

            3. Duncan has four double-doubles in San Antonio’s seven postseason games.

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        Streaking

Derek Lowe, Cleveland Indians (6-1, 2.05 ERA)

The big veteran came into this season with something to prove and is doing just that. He fired a complete game shutout in his last start, scattering six hits while walking four. It was his first shutout since he notched one with the Cubs in 2005 and has allowed two or fewer runs in five consecutive starts, four of which he won.

Wade Miley, Arizona Diamondbacks (4-1, 2.52 ERA)

The 25-year-old lefty pounded the strike zone with 72 strikes out of 102 pitches in his last outing to help the Diamondbacks to a 5-1 win over the Dodgers. He lasted 6 2/3 innings and allowed just a solo home run while striking out five. Miley is 3-1 with a 2.35 ERA since joining the rotation last month.

                        Slumping

Kevin Correia, Pittsburgh Pirates (1-4, 4.50 ERA)

Correia was doomed by one bad inning in his last trip to the hill. He allowed five runs in the fourth inning in a 6-2 loss to Miami Tuesday night. After the game he told reporters that the Marlins made him pay when his command wasn’t the sharpest, but he has now lost four straight and has issued 12 of his 15 walks this season during the drought.

Colby Lewis, Texas Rangers (3-3, 3.63 ERA)

Lewis lost his third straight start Tuesday, a 7-4 setback against the Royals. He had two throwing errors in the first inning and ended up yielding four runs before getting out of the frame. He went 5 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits and seven runs (five unearned). In his outing before that, he struck out 12, but also served up five homers.

Sunday Night Baseball: Cardinals at Dodgers
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Cardinals at Los Angeles Dodgers (-105, 7)

The Cardinals and host Dodgers conclude a three-game series with their two starting pitchers looking to reverse recent fortunes. The Cardinals’ Kyle Lohse has allowed three or more runs in three of his last four starts, while Chad Billingsley has gone six straight starts since his last win. The two National League division leaders will meet again in St. Louis in late July before playing a four-game set at Dodger Stadium on Sept. 13-16.

Both teams are missing several key players for the series finale, including the Dodgers’ Matt Kemp, who hopes to return when he’s first eligible on May 29. The MVP candidate landed on the disabled list last Tuesday with a strained left hamstring. The Cardinals are without Jon Jay (shoulder), Allen Craig (hamstring) and reliever Kyle McClellan (elbow), but right fielder Carlos Beltran appears to have avoided the disabled list after missing parts of four games last week with a sore right knee.

                            TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, ESPN

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Kyle Lohse (5-1, 2.70 ERA) vs. Dodgers RH Chad Billingsley (2-3, 3.83 ERA)

Lohse began the season with an impressive April for the second straight season, but he’s struggled in his last four outings. After being pulled from his previous start because of a strained left hamstring, Lohse gave up five runs over 6 2/3 innings last Tuesday. He was 1-1 with an 8.71 ERA in two starts against the Dodgers last season.

Billingsley allowed four runs over four innings last Tuesday against the Diamondbacks, lasting just four innings for the second straight start. After walking one batter in his first three starts combined, he’s walked 15 in his last five outings. Billingsley is 1-4 with a 4.65 ERA in seven career starts against St. Louis.

                            WALK-OFFS:

                            1. Utilityman Jerry Hairston (hamstring) is expected to rejoin the Dodgers in the middle of next week after a brief rehab assignment.

                            2. Cardinals prospect Matt Adams went 4-for-5 with two homers and five RBIs for Triple-A Memphis on Friday. The first baseman is batting .338 with nine home runs and 27 RBIs.

                            3. Los Angeles is 12 games into a stretch where it plays 18 of 23 games at Dodger Stadium through the end of May.

One telling stat for every National League team
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Baseball, more than any other sport, is a game of numbers. Unlike basketball or hockey, which offers more rouge variables, bettors can get a good idea of a team’s makeup just by looking at the stats.

We combed the National League for the most telling stats and figures, in order for MLB bettors to get a quick handle on what to expect when laying down your hard-earned coin on certain teams.

Stats as of May 19, 2012
Atlanta Braves – 3.93 pitches per batter for starters (Most in NL)

The Braves rotation hasn’t been very efficient, totaling 234.1 innings and recording only 18 quality starts – tied for second last in the NL. Starters Tommy Hanson and Brandon Beachy are third and fourth in the NL in total pitches.

Miami Marlins – 5-1 in extra innings

The Marlins have a flair for the dramatic this season. Miami has thrived in extra innings, walking a very thin line between a winning and losing record. The Fish’s extra-inning efforts have kept them out of the basement and in the middle of a jam-packed NL East.

New York Mets – 44 home runs allowed (Most in NL)

The Mets are coming back to earth after a quick start thanks to the wheelbarrow of watermelons their staff is throwing out there. New York tossed four taters to the Blue Jays in Friday’s 14-5 interleague beating.

Philadelphia Phillies – 71 runs scored from 7th inning on (Most in NL)

Those 71 runs scored in the late innings make up 43 percent of the Phillies’ total run production this season. However, many of those offensive explosions have been spoiled by a bullpen that lugs their worst ERA in the NL - 5.34 ERA.

                              Washington Nationals – 17 one-run games

As dominating as the Nationals pitching is, it hasn’t saved Washington bettors from biting their nails. The Nats are 10-7 in one-run contests this season, a record that could be much better if the offense would show up each day.

Chicago Cubs – 1.82 strikeout/walks ratio (Worst in NL)

The Cubbies have given out the second-most free passes in the NL this season, walking 152 batters. On top of that, Chicago has only 276 strikeouts. Outside of Jeff Samardzija, the Cubs don’t have many answers when they need that key K.

Cincinnati Reds - .201 BA with RISP (Worst in NL)

The Reds were predicted to be the class of the NL Central this season, but can’t seem to get the bat off their shoulder when it really matters. Cincy has struck out 83 times with runners in scoring position, with big boppers like Jay Bruce hitting just .182 with RISP.

Houston Astros – 7 home runs on the road (Tied for worst in NL)

Runs are tough to come by away from home. So, when you can’t get a rally going, sometimes a dinger is all you need to scratch across the go-ahead run. Houston has hit 19 home runs at home but just seven on the road this season.

Milwaukee Brewers – .206 BA for lead-off hitter (Third worst in NL)

Ryan Braun’s power is going to waste without anyone to set the table. Rickie Weeks is hitting a dismal .159 and has since been demoted to the middle of the order. Nyjer Morgan (.189) and Corey Hart (.252) have failed to spark the top of the order in their shots at the No. 1 hole.

Pittsburgh Pirates - 85 walks drawn (Worst in MLB)

The Bucs have some of the best pitching stats in baseball right now, but couldn’t find home plate with a GPS. Pittsburgh sits in the basement of most hitting categories, averaging just 2.85 runs per game and posting a .269 OBP.

St. Louis Cardinals – 10 home runs with RISP and two outs (Most in NL)

The Cardinals weren’t supposed to be a better hitting team with Albert Pujols out of the picture. But, St. Louis has powered itself to the top of the NL Central thanks to cashing in with big hits at the right time. However, Carlos Beltran’s bad knees could throw a hitch in the Cards’ giddy-up.

Arizona Diamondbacks – 263 strikeouts (Worst in the NL)

The Diamondbacks are hoping to make another postseason run but will need to find some strikeout power if they’re going to get out of those pinches in September and October. Arizona hasn’t been able to get out of jams this season, posting a 13.02 ERA with RISP and two outs – second-worst in the NL.

Colorado Rockies – 5.55 ERA at home (Worst in NL)

Blame it on the thin air at Coors Field or just blame it on crappy pitching at home. The Rockies have been hit hard at home, leading to a 12-8-1 over/under mark as hosts this season. Opposing batters are hitting .307 against Colorado at Coors Field.

Los Angeles Dodgers – 4 series losses

The Dodgers have dropped only four series to start the year with just one of those coming at home. Los Angeles has 17 wins at Dodgers Stadium this season, and a big part of that is manager Don Mattingly’s ability to make adjustments over the course of a series.

San Diego Padres – 16 home runs (Worst in MLB)

The Padres suffer from a serious lack of pop, hitting just 16 home runs – nine fewer than San Francisco, the second lowest HR total in the NL at 25. Sure, Petco Park is where home runs go to die, but San Diego has actually hit nine of its 16 dingers at home this season.

San Francisco Giants – 20 unearned runs

The Giants have kicked around the ball for 42 errors – most in the majors – translating into 20 unearned runs. When you only score a handful of runs each game, those costly mistakes will be the difference between winning and losing the NL West.
