    Thursday’s betting tips: Heat-Pacers line flip-flops

    Weather to watch

St. Louis Cardinals at San Francisco Giants – 17 mph winds are expected to blow out to centerfield.

    Who’s hot

NBA: The under is 6-2 in Pacers last eight overall.

NBA: The Spurs are now 13-1-1 ATS in their last 15.

NHL: The Kings are 10-3 in their last 13 home games.

MLB: The Marlins were 11-3 in their last 14 overall ahead of Wednesday's action.

    Who’s not

NBA: The Heat are 1-4 ATS in their last five road games.

NBA: The Clippers are 3-7-2 ATS in their last 12 games overall.

NHL: Coyotes are 3-8 in their last 11 meetings with Los Angeles.

MLB: The Rockies are 2-9 in their last 11 overall ahead of Wednesday's action.

    Key stat

13 – The San Antonio Spurs hit 13 3-pointers in Game 1’s win over the Clippers, draining 52 percent of their attempts from outside. The Spurs were the top outside shooting team in the regular season (39.3 percent) and are tops in the playoffs at 43.4 percent.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Austin Jackson, Detroit Tigers - Jackson left Wednesday's game in the fifth inning with an abdominal strain and is expected to sit out for at least a game or two. He's hitting .323 with three homers, 16 RBI and six stolen bases.

    Game of the day

Miami Heat at Indiana Pacers (1, 182)

    Notable quotable

“They scored a lot, but we stopped everyone else. We never felt like we were the underdogs, you know. This is business as usual.” – Indiana’s Danny Granger on shutting down Miami’s role players in Game 2’s win. LeBron James and Dwyane Wade combined for 52 points but no other Heat player had more than five. The Pacers are still set as +300 underdogs to win this series with Miami.

    Notes and tips

The Miami Heat opened as 1-point underdogs for Game 3 in Indiana after dropping Game 2 78-75, but the line didn’t hold for very long. By Wednesday evening, the Heat were pegged as 1-point favorites. Miami has covered in four of its last five trips to Indiana.

Phoenix Coyotes captain Shane Doan and defenseman Derek Morris avoided further discipline after throwing questionable hits in Game 2’s loss to the Los Angeles Kings. Forward Martin Hanzal wasn’t so lucky. He was suspended one game for hitting Kings captain Dustin Brown from behind. The Coyotes are pegged as +175 underdogs on the road.

Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie was suspended by Major League Baseball for four games Wednesday following a run-in with umpire Bill Miller. Lawrie also was fined an undisclosed amount of money for what was termed “aggressive actions” towards Miller, including throwing a helmet near Miller during the ninth inning of Tuesday night’s game at Rogers Centre against the visiting Tampa Bay Rays. The Blue Jays are appealing the suspension and Lawrie was in the lineup Wednesday night.

      Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Some NFL knowledge to consider, since the season is only four months away. Hey, its never too early to start preparing........

-- Over last five years, worst pointspread teams in September: Rams (6-14), Carolina (6-13-1), Dolphins (5-11-3), San Diego (6-12-2).

-- On flip side, Chargers are 15-5 vs spread in last 20 December games.
-- Best pointspread teams in September: Titans (13-6), Packers (12-6-2), Cowboys (12-7-1), Cardinals (12-8), Tampa Bay (12-8).

-- Dallas Cowboys covered six of their last 20 December games.

-- Other than Chargers, December's best pointspread teams: Colts (14-7), Packers (13-7), Eagles (13-8), Giants (13-8).

-- Other than Dallas, the worst pointspread teams in December: Tampa Bay (6-14-1), Denver (7-14), Minnesota (8-13), Bears/Rams (8-12-1).

      **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.........

      13) Oklahoma City trailed the Lakers 75-68 with 2:08 left, but LA never scored again, as they coughed up a 77-75 decision to the Thunder that gives Oklahoma City a 2-0 series lead. OC had an 18-5 edge in fast break points, but a couple key turnovers in last 2:00 were fatal for the Lakers.

      12) Lookalikes: The little lawyer on TNT's Franklin & Bash and Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks.

      11) Did you ever see the commercial Robert Wagner does for those reverse mortgages on TV, designed for older people? All well and good, but Wagner became famous for playing con men in two TV series, It Takes a Thief and Switch. Not exactly the kind of guy who inspires trust by investors.

      10) Greedy bastard update: Gas was $4.09 a gallon on May 6; noticed that it dropped to $4.05 as I went to the airport on May 7, and now it is $3.99, so the bastards have gotten a little less greedy. Just wait until Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial start of summer. It'll be back over $4.00.

Gas is roughly $3.82 or $3.83 a gallon out in Las Vegas.

      9) Yu Darvish is 6-1, 2.60 for the Rangers; looks like he could be the best of the Asian pitchers to come overseas and play ball.

      8) Tampa Bay Rays are 16-2 in their last 18 games against the AL East.

      7) Too bad this game with division rival Boston drew only 20,843 fans. It won't be long before the Rays will be elsewhere, unless attendance picks up. A third major league team is going to wind up in New Jersey, sitting next to the new Giants' Stadium in the Meadowlands complex.

      6) Baseball is messed up sometimes; Clay Buchholz lost Wednesday, giving up two runs in five IP; it was one of his best starts all season. He had an 8.67 RA before this game, but had a 4-1 record. Go figure.

      5) Until the first inning Wednesday night, their 37th game, no Met batter had swung at a 3-0 pitch all season. Hard to believe, but Lucas Duda got a hit on their first 3-0 swing of the season.

      4) How entrenched are the hideous Wilpons, owners of the Mets? They've been given next summer's All-Star Game. Wonder if they had to move the fences in to get the game? Would've been a lousy Home Run Derby if the fences were still where they were last year. Lot of people think the Home Run Derby has become more popular than the All-Star Game itself.

      3) Baltimore Orioles won their last six road games, with Adam Jones first player in 14 years (Mark McGwire) to hit game-winning homers after the 15th inning in two games in the same season.

      2) Did you see Toronto 3B Brett Lawrie fire his helmet down Tuesday, after he was called out on strikes? He's very lucky he didn't get a 15-20 game suspension; the helmet landed close to umpire Bill Miller, then hit him in the leg after it bounced. He threw it down really close to the umpire, and deserves a hell of a lot more than a 4-game suspension.

No way is the umpires' union happy with that slap on the wrist.

      1) On May 16, four of the top 11 stories on ESPN's home page were about football, either college or pro. An awful lot for the offseason.

Public opinion: Thursday’s best consensus plays

        NBA:

Los Angeles Clippers at San Antonio Spurs (-11, 194)

The tired, banged-up Clippers had no answer for San Antonio’s hot shooting in Game 1. Los Angeles has lost three of its last four, while the Spurs are cruising on a 15-game winning streak. Still, early public bettors are taking the points in Game 2. The line opened at -11.5 at most books before dropping half a point.

        Consensus: Clippers 55 percent/Spurs 45 percent

        NHL:

Phoenix Coyotes at Los Angeles Kings (-190, 4.5)

The Kings are set as a solid favorite to put Phoenix in a 3-0 series deficit and it’s hard to argue with the public in this one. Los Angeles has now won 10 of its 11 playoff games, allowing more than two goals just once.

        Consensus: Coyotes 29 percent/Kings 71 percent

        MLB:

Oakland Athletics at Texas Rangers (-185, 9)

Texas starter Matt Harrison has struggled lately, losing three of his last four starts, but that isn’t scaring away Rangers supporters. Texas went into Wednesday’s action leading the bigs in runs per game (5.73), batting average (.292), and OPS (.828).

        Consensus: Athletics 28 percent/Rangers 72 percent

Coyotes at Kings: What bettors need to know
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phoenix Coyotes at Los Angeles Kings (-190, 4.5)

          THE STORY
: The Los Angeles Kings haven't needed much help throughout the Stanley Cup playoffs, but they were able to capitalize on some charity from the Phoenix Coyotes to take a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference finals. The series shifts to Tinseltown for Game 3, and the Kings have all the momentum as they inch closer to their first Stanley Cup finals appearance in 19 years. The Coyotes will need to figure out how to shut down a relentless Kings offense that has peppered Phoenix netminder Mike Smith with 88 shots in the first two games.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, NBCS, TSN

ABOUT THE COYOTES: Phoenix lost its cool in Game 2, taking two separate five-minute majors for dangerous hits on Los Angeles players. Coyotes captain Shane Doan was the first offender, sent off in the second period for drilling Kings forward Trevor Lewis into the boards. Doan believes the penalty was too harsh. "He turns. He looks right at me. I didn't even look at him again," Doan said. "I was looking at the puck, because I was trying to poke the puck free. He turns away as I'm coming in." That penalty led to the first of two 5-on-3 goals scored by Jeff Carter that effectively put the game away.

ABOUT THE KINGS: Much had gone right for Los Angeles heading into Game 2, but the power play wasn't one of those things. The Kings had scored just once on their previous 44 man advantage opportunities before being handed a pair of two-man power plays. Carter made good both times, completing his hat trick after scoring just once in his first 10 playoff games. "Obviously I'd love to be scoring every game," he said. "They haven't come that easily for me the last little while here. It's something that I've been working on in practice, trying to get to the net during the game, get a couple greasy ones."

          TRENDS:
          - Los Angeles has won 10 of its 11 playoff games.
          - Coyotes are 1-4 in the last five meetings in Los Angeles
          - Kings are 10-3 in their last 13 home games.

          OVERTIME:

          1. The Kings are on a franchise-record seven-game postseason winning streak and are a perfect 7-0 on the road in the playoffs.

          2. Coyotes F Martin Hanzal faces a hearing with the league for his hit on Kings forward Dustin Brown in the third period of Game 2. Hanzal hammered Brown into the boards to earn the second of Phoenix's two major and game misconduct penalties.

          3. Kings F Colin Fraser left the team prior to Game 2 for personal reasons, and his status for Game 3 is unknown.

Heat (1-1) @ Pacers -- Heat is 4-6 this season when Bosh doesn't play; he's likely out for series. Miami is 1-22 behind arc in series; they made only 34.6% from floor Tuesday, with subs 4-16, Wade 8-22. Bench did have +14 mark last game. Pacers' starting guards were just 5-15 from the floor in Game 1, but improved to 8-20 Tuesday; Indiana subs had a -44 mark last game. 11 of last 13 Miami games stayed under the total. Indy won five of last six games since losing opener to Orlando. Miami split its two road games at New York in the first round.

Clippers @ Spurs (1-0)-- So far this spring, teams that lost in Game 1's are 9-2 vs spread in Game 2's. LA is very banged up (Paul/Griffin) after surviving Game 7 in Memphis Sunday; Paul was 3-13 in opener, Griffin 7-17. In 139 combined minutes, Clipper starters took total of four foul shots. Rested, veteran Spurs' squad dusted Utah 4-0; only one of their five playoff wins was by less than 12 points. Would expect a stronger effort from Clippers, but San Antonio is on a serious roll right now.

Miami Heat at Indiana Pacers (+1, 181.5)

            THE STORY
: The Miami Heat had more trouble without Chris Bosh than they had anticipated. After handily winning Game 1 without Bosh for the second half, the Heat came into Game 2 feeling good about their chances. The Indiana Pacers made them reconsider, going strong to the inside and playing tougher throughout the second half to even the series at a game apiece. The Pacers will be looking to take the lead at home in Game 3 on Thursday night.

            TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT THE HEAT: Bosh was ruled out indefinitely with an abdominal strain and Miami used a smaller lineup at points in Game 2, moving LeBron James to the power forward spot. But the supporting cast was not able to pick up enough of the slack, leaving James and Dwyane Wade to handle the bulk of the scoring and playmaking. The focus of heavy defensive pressure and a series of hard fouls, James and Wade wore down at the end. After leading the Heat back from a double-digit deficit, Wade missed four shots in the final 2:05 and James clanked two free throws that would have given them the lead with 54 seconds left. The two were so out of gas that Mario Chalmers ended up taking the final shot with Miami down by three. James and Wade combined for 52 points but no other Heat player managed more than five.

ABOUT THE PACERS: Indiana handled things just about as well as they possibly could in Game 2 and still had to sweat out a 78-75 win. Roy Hibbert, David West and Paul George controlled the glass but the Pacers still need to get more offensively from Danny Granger, who expended most of his energy on the defensive end against Wade and James. Granger ended up fouling out with 11 points on 5-of-14 shooting and is just 6 for 24 from the field in the series. Indiana could stand to give Hibbert more of a chance on the offensive end, as he had just six field goal attempts in Game 2 despite Miami not having Bosh around to defend.

            TRENDS:
            - The Heat are 4-1 ATS in their last five games in Indiana.
            - The Pacers are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games as a home underdog.
            - The under is 35-14-2 in the Heat's last 51 overall.

            BUZZER BEATERS:

            1. Game 3 will mark James’ 100th career playoff outing.

            2. Miami PG Norris Cole played 17 minutes Tuesday, just shy of his total from the previous six playoff games.

            3. The Pacers committed 17 turnovers in Game 2 and have totaled 32 through the first two games.

Los Angeles Clippers at San Antonio Spurs (-11, 194)

            THE STORY
: One game does not decide a postseason series, but the San Antonio Spurs continued to display an aura of invincibility in methodically dismantling the Los Angeles Clippers in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals. It was the 15th consecutive victory for the Spurs, who can take a 2-0 series lead over the visiting Clippers on Thursday night. San Antonio has scored more than 100 points in 14 of the past 15 games and set a franchise playoff record with 13 3-pointers Tuesday.

            TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS: Whether Los Angeles can disrupt the Spurs’ precision offense remains a question, but there is no doubt the Clippers will be facing a short series without better play from Chris Paul. The All-Star point guard, battling a hip flexor strain, managed only six points in Game 1 and was scoreless over the final three quarters. Paul did have 10 assists and five steals, but he also committed five turnovers and missed his last nine shots. Blake Griffin (knee) had 15 points and nine rebounds, but played fewer than 29 minutes for the second straight game and admitted he was feeling “80 percent.” The silver lining was the play of reserve guard Eric Bledsoe, who tied his career high with 23 points.

ABOUT THE SPURS: The Clippers could not stop Tim Duncan, but perhaps the Sports Illustrated jinx can. Duncan, who appears on the cover of this week’s issue, was magnificent in Game 1 with 26 points and 10 rebounds – his 133rd postseason double-double. It was the highest output in the playoffs for the 36-year-old Duncan since he scored 29 in May 2010. Veteran Manu Ginobili, another of San Antonio’s old guard, came off the bench to score 22 points and was among three Spurs players to hit three 3-pointers. One of the intriguing subplots of the series is the much-ballyhooed matchup at point guard between Paul and Tony Parker. Like Paul, Parker struggled in the opener with seven points on 1-for-9 shooting, though he had a game-high 11 assists.

            TRENDS:
            - Over is 13-3-2 in the last 18 meetings in San Antonio.
            - The Clippers are 3-7-2 ATS in their last 12 games overall.
            - Spurs are 21-4-1 ATS in their last 26 home games.

            BUZZER BEATERS:

            1. Spurs C Boris Diaw grabbed 12 rebounds – his second-highest total of the season – to help his team dominated the backboards 47-34.

            2. Clippers G Nick Young nailed all three 3-point attempts and had 13 points, helping Los Angeles to a 46-37 edge in bench scoring.

            3. San Antonio is averaging 110.8 points during its 15-game winning streak.

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      Streaking

R.A. Dickey, New York Mets (5-1, 3.65 ERA)

Dickey didn’t have his best knuckler going in his last start, but still held the Marlins to two runs over six innings to pick up his third win in four outings. He was hit by a pitch on the wrist of his pitching hand, which cut his outing short. He is expected to be fine for Thursday. Dickey said he had a tough time keeping his knuckleball from over-rotating.

Brandon Beachy, Atlanta Braves (4-1, 1.60 ERA)

You’d never know Brandon Beachy was an undrafted free agent by looking at him on the mound now. He allowed just one run on two hits over six innings in a win over St. Louis in his last outing, and has allowed two or fewer runs in all seven of his starts. However, he has walked seven combined batters in his last two outings – half of his season total.

                      Slumping

Chris Volstad, Chicago Cubs (0-5, 6.92 ERA)

One bad inning spoiled another Volstad outing last week when he coughed up five runs in the sixth inning against the Brewers, adding yet another loss to his resume. Volstad’s slider has given him the most trouble, but without a win since July 17 of last year, the slump seems to be getting to his head. He might be pitching to save his spot in the rotation here and will be up against Roy Halladay.

                      J.A. Happ, Houston Astros (2-3, 5.72 ERA)

Happ has surrendered six home runs in his last four starts and owns a fat 7.16 ERA over his last three starts. Manager Brad Mills says Happ’s major problem right now is that he’s leaving some pitches up in the strike zone. He has just one win in his last six starts.
