Wednesday's betting tips: Perkins a GTD for Thunder

    Weather to watch

Detroit Tigers at Chicago White Sox – 21 mph winds are expected to blow out to left-centerfield.

Cleveland Indians at Minnesota Twins – 19 mph winds are expected to blow out to right-centerfield.

    Who’s hot

NBA: Celtics are 9-3-1 ATS in their last 13 road games.

NBA: The over is 4-1 in the Thunder's last five overall.

NHL: The under is 8-1-7 in the Rangers' last 16 overall.

MLB: Dodgers are 20-6 in the last 26 meetings with San Diego.

    Who’s not

NBA: 76ers are 2-6 ATS in their last eight home games.

NBA: Lakers are 1-5 ATS in their last six road games.

NHL: Devils are 1-4 in the last five games at Madison Square Garden.

MLB: The Cardinals are 1-5 in Jaime Garcia's last six road starts.

    Key stat

4 – New York Rangers goaltender Hernrik Lundqvist has faced 23 or fewer shots in each of the team’s last four games. New York is 3-1 in those games, including the 21-save shutout Lundqvist pitched in Monday’s 3-0 win over New Jersey.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Carlos Beltran, St. Louis Cardinals – Beltran sat out his second straight game Tuesday with some soreness in his surgically-repaired right knee. The outfielder is off to a great start this season with 13 homers, 32 RBI and a .295 batting average.

    Game of the day

    Boston Celtics at Philadelphia 76ers (-2, 172.5)

    Notable quotable

“Another thing I've always said about K.G. is that he exerts so much energy in how he plays that sometimes when he got to the fourth quarter he would be tired. It's like a car. You've got so much gas, and if you're going to drive a thousand miles and you drive at a higher speed early, you're not going to have as much gas at the end. And I think Doc (Rivers) and their staff have done a phenomenal job as far as monitoring his time. And by doing that I think he's been able to have more left in the tank at the end of games." – Former Timberwolves coach and current Boston Celtics consultant Flip Saunders on Kevin Garnett. K.G. is averaging 19.5 points and 10.8 rebounds per game in the playoffs.

    Notes and tips

Oklahoma City Thunder center Kendrick Perkins is set as a game-time decision for Game 2 against the Los Angeles Lakers. He was battling an ongoing hip issue and aggravated the injury in Game 1’s win, exiting the contest early in the third quarter. Perkins, Oklahoma’s main man to guard Andrew Bynum, had four points, one rebound and two blocks before leaving the opening game of the series. Bynum posted 20 points, 14 rebounds and a block for the Lakers.

Minnesota Twins DH Justin Morneau is expected to rejoin the lineup Wednesday after a stint on the DL with a sore wrist. He had four homers and nine RBIs to go along with a .230 batting average when he hit the shelf on May 7.

Maurice Jones-Drew wasn't in attendance as Jaguars organized team activities began Tuesday. The Jacksonville Jaguars were not expecting the NFL leading rusher in 2011 to attend the voluntary portion of the offseason program, but first-year coach Mike Mularkey indicated a direct message was being sent to the organization. "It's all voluntary," Mularkey said. "I wish he was here. He knows we wish he was here. He's talked about trying to get an extension for his contract."

      Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

The Las Vegas Hilton is now called LVH since Hilton sold the property; here is a brief synopsis of my 8-day stay there........

-- Little bit isolated off the strip, but the monorail is good when it works and the staff at LVH is really helpful.

-- Sportsbook is tremendous; big, comfortable chairs, superior deli with lot of good food. Watching games there is top-flight.

-- There is an Elvis impersonator who does shows there who had them lined up all over the place for his show Sunday night.

-- Most showers in Las Vegas hotels are tremendous; this one was awful. Terrible water pressure, which got little bit better the last day.

-- Food in the Paradise Cafe was very good and they gave you a lot of it.

-- The bar by the craps table is open 24/7. Some very interesting people are there are 4am. Trust me on this.

      *************

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week thoughts as I settle back in....

      13) Miami Heat is now 4-6 without Chris Bosh this season, losing 78-75 at home to Indiana, going 1-16 behind the arc. Series heads to Indiana 1-1.

      12) You look at the relatively-obscure Pacer roster and realize that other than Leandro Barbosa, most of the Pacers played a lot of college ball. Not sure if it makes them more mature, more fundamentally sound or both.

      11) There's a scapegoat in Anaheim, as Halos fired 13-year batting coach Mickey Hatcher, silently but loudly blaming him for the club's dismal start. Guess he didn't mesh well with Albert Pujols. Thats not good.

      10) Phillies are a combined 4-9 in Halladay/Lee starts. Surprising.

      9) Even worse, Giants are 2-6 when Tim Lincecum starts.

      8) Then there is Derek Lowe, who is 6-1, 2.05 for Cleveland; he blanked the horrendous Twins Tuesday with a 127-pitch complete game, striking out no one, and getting only one miss on 48 Cleveland swings. Tribe put 29 balls in play, only got six hits, with 22 ground ball outs.

      7) We quoted our new friend Tony the Cabbie up above; he must have been happy Tuesday, with Konerko/Pierzynski going 8-9 for the White Sox. He has both those guys on his fantasy league team. I'd tell you more about him, but Tony is a Cuban immigrant and I only understood about 40% of what he was saying to me. Terrific guy, though. Knows his baseball.

      6) There is a golf course in Summerlin called Angel Park, and you can golf there at night- they've got lights. Arnold Palmer designed the course.

      5) Some publicity-seeking jackass wrote an article this week saying that Tony Romo is a top 5 QB in the NFL. Let me see, that means, out of the group of QBs below, he has to be better than two of them, plus everyone else in the league:

      Brady/both Mannings/Roethlisberger/Rodgers/Brees/Rivers. No way.

      4) The casino at the M Resort is almost too nice; its pretty far from the Strip, and it is gorgeous. I felt guilty sitting at the bar, like I wasn't dressed well enough (I live in cargo pants/Adidas hightops). You can bet on any game in the NFL season (except Week 17) right now. We'll be talking about that more as the spring moves on and training camp approaches.

      3) Butler and VCU are off to the Atlantic 14, replacing Temple/Charlotte. Temple will be a big loss for that league. A-14 is a weird league, far-flung and without a great TV contract. Interesting to see how Butler/VCU do in noving up in class from their previous leagues.

      2) Only three weeks until the Phil Steele College Football magazine hits the newsstands. Can't wait; its the bible of college football.

      1) It is 6:45am as I finish this up; time to hit the hay after flying home late Tuesday night. Vacations are excellent/necessary; coming home is good, but nothing screws up my sleep patterns more than eight days in the desert.

Public opinion: Wednesday's biggest consensus plays

        NBA:

Los Angeles Lakers at Oklahoma City Thunder (-7.5, 195.5)

The Lakers said they were tired in Game 1’s blowout loss to the Thunder, and there’s no doubt fatigue played a part in the loss. However, early bettors aren’t sold on Kobe and Co. bouncing back in the second game of the series.

        Consensus: Lakers 40 percent/Thunder 60 percent

        NHL:

New Jersey Devils at New York Rangers (-130, 4.5)

The New York Rangers’ legs looked heavy through the first two periods of Game 1, just a couple days after they put the Capitals away. The third period was a totally different story as they jumped all over New Jersey and recorded a 3-0 victory.

        Consensus: Devils 45 percent/Rangers 55 percent

        MLB:

Minnesota Twins at Detroit Tigers (-185, 9.5)

The Tigers put eight runs on the board in the sixth inning Tuesday on their way to a 10-8 win over Chicago and most bettors are looking to go back to the well again Wednesday. The Twins have won just four road games all season.

        Consensus: Twins 34 percent/Tigers 66 percent

Devils at Rangers: What bettors need to know
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Jersey Devils at New York Rangers (-130, 4.5)

          THE STORY
: Henrik Lundqvist's sensational season has him up for the Vezina Trophy - and if he wins, he may want to invite his defense corps to the podium. Lundqvist and a host of New York shot blockers look to take a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference finals as the Rangers welcome the New Jersey Devils to Madison Square Garden. Lundqvist turned aside all 21 shots he faced in the series-opening 3-0 win, while New York skaters blocked another 26 attempts as the Rangers prevailed in their first conference finals game since 1997.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBCS, CBC

ABOUT THE DEVILS: It would have been understandable had New Jersey netminder Martin Brodeur forgotten who was tending goal at the other end of the ice. ''From my view I saw him about 10 minutes because there were so many Rangers players in front of him,'' he joked following the Game 1 loss. New Jersey sniper Ilya Kovalchuk suggested he and his teammates need to be better at faking shots to freeze Ranger defenders, then take advantage of whatever openings they can generate. Of course, they still have to solve Lundqvist. ''He played pretty well,'' Brodeur conceded.

ABOUT THE RANGERS: New York may have been full value for Monday's victory, but not everyone was satisfied with how the club played. ''We've got to be better," said Rangers captain Ryan Callahan. "We know that. We've got areas in the game that we need to improve on and we need to work on. We'll be ready for (Wednesday)." The power play provided reason for optimism, scoring once in four opportunities against the top penalty killing unit in modern-day NHL history. The Rangers also dominated at the face-off dot, winning 59 percent of the draws.

          TRENDS:
          - Home team is 4-0 in the last four meetings.
          - Under is 6-0-3 in the Rangers' last nine playoff games as a favorite.
          - The Devils are 17-8 in their last 25 games as a road underdog.

          OVERTIME:

          1. Lundqvist has yet to allow more than three goals in any game this postseason.

          2. Monday's loss marked the first time in four games the Devils failed to score a power-play goal.

          3. The home team has won the last four head-to-head meetings.

            Boston Celtics at Philadelphia 76ers (-2, 172.5)

            THE STORY
: The first two games of the series were both decided by one point and it figures to be another close encounter as the second-round series shifts to Philadelphia for Game 3. The 76ers notched an 82-81 victory in Boston on Monday to even the series after blowing a double-digit, fourth-quarter lead in Game 1 as the Celtics prevailed 92-91. Philadelphia is gaining confidence and won both home games against Boston in the regular season.

            TV: 7 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE CELTICS: Boston forward Paul Pierce is being greatly hindered by the left knee injury he suffered in the Atlanta series. Pierce is 5 of 20 from the field and averaging 10.5 points. He scored seven points in Game 2. Guard Avery Bradley aggravated a shoulder injury in Game 2 and is unable to play at the level he did late in the regular season. Ray Allen is receiving more playing time despite his ankle woes and scored a team-high 17 points in Game 2. Point guard Rajon Rondo is averaging 15 assists. Rondo had 13 against one turnover in Game 2.

ABOUT THE 76ERS: Second-year guard Evan Turner made big plays down the stretch and rookie post Lavoy Allen was a key contributor in both games in Boston. Turner scored six of his 10 points in the final three minutes, including driving for the go-ahead basket with 40.4 seconds left. Allen is averaging 11 points and 7.0 rebounds in the series after averaging 4.1 points and 4.2 rebounds in the regular season. “Our young guys just keep growing and they’re really becoming men,” Philadelphia coach Doug Collins said. “I have to tell you all season long, we couldn’t win these games and now our guys are believing they can do it and it’s pretty special to watch.”

            TRENDS:
            - Celtics are 0-4 ATS in the last four meetings in Philadelphia.
            - 76ers are 2-6 ATS in their last eight home games.
            - Celtics are 9-3-1 ATS in their last 13 road games.

            BUZZER BEATERS
            1. The 76ers limited Boston to 24 total points in the second and third quarters of Game 2.

            2. Celtics forward Kevin Garnett is averaging 24.0 points and 12.3 rebounds over the past three games.

            3. Philadelphia forwards Elton Brand (5.5 points, 2.5 points) and Thaddeus Young (4.5 points) have been non-factors in the first two games while dealing with minor injuries – neck for Brand and ankle for Young.

Los Angeles Lakers at Oklahoma City Thunder (-7.5, 195.5)

            THE STORY
: One game won't decide a best-of-seven playoff series, but it's fair to say the Oklahoma City Thunder have all the momentum as they entertain the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 2 of their Western Conference second-round encounter. The Thunder had a lengthy layoff after sweeping the Dallas Mavericks in the opening round but showed no rust in the opener against the Lakers, cruising to a 119-90 victory.

            TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE LAKERS: Los Angeles had precious little time to recover from an emotionally draining seven-game triumph over the Denver Nuggets, and looked sluggish at times against the well-rested Thunder. But Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant distanced himself from the suggestion that extra days off made the difference in Game 1. "Obviously, they're more well-rested than we are, but I don't think it made that much of a difference for us,'' he said. ''We could have had the same amount of days off. They're just younger and faster ... what you saw is them executing extremely well."

ABOUT THE THUNDER: Oklahoma City did several things right in the opening-game victory, but coach Scott Brooks pinpointed one area in particular that pleased him the most: the lack of turnovers. The Thunder handed the ball over just four times - a franchise low, and a remarkable turnaround for a team that averaged a league-high 16.4 turnovers per game during the regular season. ''I think that's huge," Brooks said. "Four - we've had that the first six minutes of games at times." The one-sided result allowed the Thunder to give stars Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant a large chunk of the night off.

            TRENDS:
            - Lakers are 1-4 ATS in the last five meetings.
            - The over is 4-1 in Thunder last five overall.
            - Lakers are 6-2 ATS in their last eight games following a ATS loss.

            BUZZER BEATERS:
            1. Monday's loss was the 12th worst in Lakers playoff history. It came just four days after the Nuggets crushed Los Angeles by 28 points.

            2. Lakers C Andrew Bynum has averaged nearly 15 rebounds per game over his last four contests.

            3. Thunder C Kendrick Perkins aggravated a hip injury in the opener and is a game-time decision for Game 2.

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wednesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      Streaking

                      Gio Gonzalez, Washington Nationals

Gonzalez has won four of his last five starts and has allowed just five runs in his last six trips to the mound. He limited the Reds to a pair of runs over five innings and struck out a season-high nine batters last week. One caution flag is he’s having a bit of trouble with his control, issuing 10 walks over his last three outings.

Chris Capuano, Los Angeles Dodgers (5-0, 2.06 ERA)

Thanks to a new grip on his breaking ball, veteran lefty Chris Capuano has reinvented himself. The Dodgers hoped he would be able to help the back end of the rotation, but he’s tied for the team lead in wins with Ted Lilly and has allowed only one run over his last three starts. He also has 19 strikeouts over that span.

                      Slumping

Mike Leake, Cincinnati Reds (0-5, 7.11 ERA)

By all indications, Leake will be on the hill for his scheduled start Wednesday. But if he doesn’t pull himself together, it may be his last start in the rotation. He lasted a career-low three innings last week in a loss to the Nationals and gave up six runs before hitting the showers. Leake has allowed at least five runs in four of his six starts.

Clayton Richard, San Diego Padres (1-5, 5.32 ERA)

Richard dropped his fifth consecutive decision last week at Philadelphia, yielding five runs and a pair of homers in a 7-3 loss. He has allowed at least eight hits in four of his last five starts. The only good news for Padres bettors is that with the wide open spaces of Petco Park, he has been significantly better at home this year.

                              Wednesday, May 16

Devils @ Rangers (1-0)-- Devils were down 2-1 in first round, 1-0 last round, so they won't panic, but only getting four shots on goal in third period Monday, after Rangers tok 1-0 lead 0:53 into period, is red flag. Rangers are now 4-3 vs New Jersey this year, with home side winning seven of last nine games overall. Devils are 4-4 on road in playoffs, but are 2-5 in last seven games here. Rangers have now allowed only one goal in last two games; under is 8-1-6 in postseason games this year. Game 1 loss was Devils' first loss in their last five games.
