Thursday’s betting tips: Umpire Jerry Meals loves road teams

    Who’s hot

NBA: The 76ers are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games overall.

NBA: The Hawks are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games as an underdog.

NBA: The Nuggets are 7-2 ATS in their last nine games overall.

MLB: The Blue Jays are 13-3 in the last 16 meetings in Minnesota.

    Who’s not

NBA: The Bulls are 0-4 ATS in their last four playoff games as an underdog.

NBA: The over is 4-10 in Boston's last 14 games playing on one day of rest.

NBA: The Lakers are 9-19 ATS in their last 28 games overall.

MLB: The Indians are 5-12 in the last 17 meetings in Boston.

    Key stat

1 – Umpire Jerry Meals, who is scheduled to work Thursday’s Texas-Baltimore matchup, has seen just one home team win in his last 11 trips behind the plate.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Zaza Pachulia, Atlanta Hawks – The 6-foot-11 forward has been out of the lineup since April 13 with a sprained left foot but is now at least questionable for Game 6 against the Boston Celtics. Pachulia put up 7.8 points and 7.9 rebounds per game in the regular season. The Hawks are set as 6.5-point underdogs Thursday.

    Game of the day

Los Angeles Lakers at Denver Nuggets (-1.5, 199)

    Notable quotable

"It was do or die. Nobody wants to get eliminated at home. You battle until you can't battle no more. I'll do everything in my power to play," he said. "I have all summer to lay back if we lose, so I'm going to lay it on the line." – Chicago Bulls forward Taj Gibson about leaving Game 5 with a sprained ankle only to return in the fourth quarter. Gibson battled hard with Elton Brand and finished with eight points seven rebounds and four blocks in Chicago’s 77-69 victory.

    Notes and tips

So much for the Blue Jays' new and improved bullpen. The Blue Jays did not do much during the offseason, but they sure did rearrange their relievers. After all, last year's bullpen blew 25 saves. Some were in the same game and some in games the Blue Jays won. But they were only 33-for-58 in save opportunities. A little more than a month into this season, the new, improved bullpen has seven blown saves already. After Francisco Cordero, who has 329 career saves, coughed up his third save opportunity in five chances on Tuesday, the Blue Jays are now 4-for-11 in save opportunities. That has forced the team to move Casey Janssen into the closing role for now.

Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles says that his left knee is “80 percent” recovered from ACL surgery. "I feel I can do the same thing my teammates do," he said. "I do it without the coaches around. I catch the ball, I cut, I do a lot of drills and I've been doing this for two months." The Chiefs are set around +450 to win the AFC West.

      Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Cantor Gaming has released pointspreads for Week 1-16 of this coming NFL season; interesting stuff. Here are spreads of some of the games:

Week 3-- Texans (pick 'em) @ Broncos

      Week 4-- Seahawks (-1) @ Rams

      Week 6-- 49ers (-3) vs Giants

Week 9-- Saints (-2.5) vs Eagles

Week 15-- Cowboys (-1.5) vs Steelers

      Week 16-- Bears (-1) @ Cardinals

      ***************

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud........

      13) Had a terrific dinner the other night with Big Dawg and Mrs Big Dawg at Battista's, a great restaurant on Flamingo here in Las Vegas. If you come to America's Favorite City, make sure you have dinner there at least once.

      12) You can smoke in casinos; in New York, you can't smoke indoors. The smoking doesn't bother me, but at the Las Vegas Hilton, there is a separate smoke-free room where all the games are shown.

      11) I am 52 years old and had never had a corn dog until tonight; they sell mini-corn dogs at the Sportsbook Deli-- if they don't start selling these fine food items in New York soon, I'm not going to be happy. They're good!!!

      10) Rode the monorail here for the first time; they're having some problems with it right now, but it seems like a good idea. Cheaper than riding a cab.

      9) At every TV timeout of the two NBA games last night, the sportsbook put out a new line on the game. For instance, if you liked the Knicks +11 in Game 5, when they were down 17 in 4th quarter, you could've gotten them at +17.5 or +18 at different times. They lost by 12. Interesting concept.

      8) ESPN/ACC renewed their TV agreement until 2027; I had to stop when I read that and try to remember what year this is. 2027 seems like a movie, but its only fifteen years away.

      7) Read some criticism of Mike Woodson because he let Carmelo Anthony dominate the ball; the last coach didn't let Anthony dominate the ball, and his butt got fired, because Anthony wouldn't try hard while he was coach of the team. What would you do?

      6) When Jose Canseco first came up with the A's, I dropped whatever I was doing to watch his ABs; he was that much fun to watch hit. Have a similar feeling when Giancarlo Stanton comes to bat; he's worth price of admission.

      5) Terry Collins is doing a terrific job managing the no-name Mets.

      4) Tampa Bay's Matt Joyce actually hurt his leg while he hit the GW HR in the 9th inning; he limped around the bases but did stay in the game. Fact the ball went out of the park (landed in first row) shows you how cheap HRs are in rightcenter field in the Bronx. Bad place for pitchers.

      3) Major league teams are 37-7 this season when they have 15+ hits; three of the seven losses belong to the Red Sox.

      2) Clippers weren't exactly the picture of poise Wednesday, getting five technical fouls in their loss at Memphis, but they did cut a 24-point deficit down to four. Curious to see if they can finish the Grizzlies off at home.

      1) You read all this recruiting stuff on the Internet, then you realize Aaron Rodgers didn't get a D-I scholarship offer, and it hits you that lot of these nitwits are just that, imbeciles. Interesting to read, but uninformed. Lot of times, all a guy needs to succeed is a chance. Look at Rodgers.

NHL Western Conference final: Preview and prediction

No. 3 Phoenix Coyotes vs. No. 8 Los Angeles Kings

Series prices: Los Angeles -175, Phoenix +130

It’s not a coincidence that the last two teams standing in the Western Conference are the clubs that had the two best goaltenders during the regular season.

Statistically speaking, there is really no difference between Mike Smith and Jonathan Quick. Quick is the owner of a .949 save percentage in the playoffs while Smith isn’t far behind, sitting at .948. Both goalies are on a record-setting pace.

Smith has been the busier of the two netminders, facing an average of 36 shots per outing. Quick, thanks in large part to a water-tight defense in front of him, has had to stop only 28 shots a night.

With neither team really having an advantage between the pipes, you really have to break down the rest of the lineups to find an edge.

After averaging 2.29 goals per game during the regular season, the Kings have increased that number to a surprising 3.00 goals in the postseason. The addition of Jeff Carter turned the Kings offense around late in the season, but it’s the captain Dustin Brown who has been the biggest difference maker in the playoffs. Brown has been Mr. Everything for the Kings and, while he’s not known for his offensive game, he leads the team with 11 points in nine games.

The Coyotes have done a great job scoring by committee but they lack the game-breaker they will need in key moments against Darryl Sutter’s defense. The one area where the Coyotes do have an advantage is on special teams, or more specifically the power play. Phoenix’s power play is firing at 16.1 percent while the Kings have struggled with the man advantage, scoring on less than nine percent of their chances.

The season series between the two teams had a little bit of everything. Quick had a couple of shutouts, Smith had one of his own and the teams even had a wild 5-4 finish in one of their six head-to-head meetings.

Smith is certainly capable of out dueling Quick in two or three games but doesn’t have the offensive weapons in front of him to win this series and advance to the Stanley Cup final.

Season Series: Phoenix (2-2-2), Los Angeles (3-1-2)

Series Prediction: Kings in six games

          NBA
          Armadillo's Write-Up

          Thursday, May 10

Hawks @ Celtics (3-2)-- All five Atlanta starters scored between 13-19 points in Game 5, as bench played only 29:00, scoring 9 points. Hawks were 4-20 from arc in losing Games 3-4 here. Atlanta took 21-20 FTs in Games 1-2, but only 15-17-14 in last three games- they need to go to basket more and get to line more. Boston made 11-26 from arc in Game 4, but are 16-71 outside arc in other four games. Home side won four of five series games. Atlanta scored 83-80-84-89-87 points in series.

Bulls @ 76ers (3-2)-- Philly outscored Chicago 65-29 from foul line last three games (101-56 for series); Bulls' starting Gs went 5-19 from floor in last game-- playing without Rose/Noah is tough for Chicago, which forced total of only 23 turnovers in three series losses. Noah still hasn't run/jumped, but will try to play. 76ers scored only 52 points from floor, shooting 32%- Game 5 was 35-26 at the half. Ugly. Sixers shot less than 40% from floor in last three games, after shooting 59% in Game 2.

Lakers (3-2) @ Nuggets-- Denver wants to run, eliminating an advantage Lakers have with Bynum underneath; road team won last two games, as three of last four series games were decided by 4 or less points. Bryant was 14-32 from floor in Game 5, Bynum just 5-8; the farther the ball is shot from the basket, the better for Nuggets. In three series wins, Lakers took 17-15-17 treys; in two losses, 25-24. Weird thing about this series is road team took more foul shots in all five games.

What bettors need to know: Thursday's NBA playoff action
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Hawks at Boston Celtics (-6, 174)

          THE STORY
: The Boston Celtics take a second stab at clinching their first-round series when they host the Atlanta Hawks on Thursday. Atlanta cut Boston’s lead to 3-2 in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference matchup by notching an 87-86 victory in Tuesday’s Game 5. The Hawks are vying to become the ninth team in NBA history to overcome a 3-1 deficit. The Celtics would like to wrap up the series at home and avoid a Game 7 in Atlanta on Saturday.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT, Sport South (Atlanta), Comcast SportsNet New England (Boston)

ABOUT THE HAWKS: Center Al Horford started for the first time in nearly four months and had 19 points and 11 rebounds and also hit the go-ahead basket. Horford played 41 minutes in his second game since tearing a pectoral muscle in January. Horford’s presence has bolstered a squad that looked ready to go quietly after forward Josh Smith missed Game 3 with a knee injury. Smith had 13 points and 16 rebounds in Game 5 and is averaging 16.5 points and 14.8 rebounds in the series. Guard Joe Johnson is averaging a team-leading 17.2 points despite shooting just 23.3 percent from 3-point range.

ABOUT THE CELTICS: Boston had a chance to clinch in the final seconds of Game 5 after Rajon Rondo stole an inbounds pass for his fifth steal of the contest, but the Celtics were unable to get off a shot as Rondo fumbled the ball. Rondo is averaging 17.5 points, 12.8 assists and four steals in the four games in which he has played. Forward Paul Pierce is struggling physically with his ailing left knee and had 16 points and is averaging a team-leading 21.8 points. Guard Ray Allen is playing well despite his ankle injury and averaging 13.3 points off the bench.

          TRENDS:
          - The Hawks are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games as a road underdog.
          - The Celtics are 10-3 ATS in their last 13 games as a home favorite.
          - Over is 17-5 in Hawks' last 22 overall.

          BUZZER BEATERS:

          1. Atlanta’s 87 points in Game 5 were its most in the series, while Boston has scored fewer than 86 points just once.

          2. Hawks forward Marvin Williams was a big contributor in Game 5 with 15 points after scoring a total of 16 points over the first four games.

          3. Celtics forward Kevin Garnett has just 12 combined rebounds over the last two games after averaging 12.3 per game over the first three contests.

          Chicago Bulls at Philadelphia 76ers (-3, 169)

          THE STORY
: The Chicago Bulls stepped up on the verge of elimination Tuesday, turning in a stifling defensive effort to stay alive in the series. With Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah out, Luol Deng finally delivered an All-Star performance, burying key 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and finishing with a game-high 24 points as the Bulls pulled to within 3-2 in the series. The Philadelphia 76ers still have the advantage and will try to close it out at home in Game 6.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, CSCH (Chicago), CSN (Philadelphia), NBATV

ABOUT THE BULLS: Deng averaged eight points in the first three games without Rose but finally broke out in Game 5, becoming the offensive force that Chicago needed in the fourth quarter. Carlos Boozer was strong on the inside, scoring 12 of his 19 points in the third quarter to keep the Bulls clear and adding 13 rebounds. Chicago had another scary moment in the third quarter of Game 5, when Taj Gibson rolled his ankle and had to be taken to the locker room. The reserve forward returned in the fourth and is expected to play in Game 6. The Bulls are hoping to avoid becoming the fifth No. 1 seed to lose in the first round to a No. 8 seed.

ABOUT THE 76ERS: Philadelphia has not shot the ball well in any of the last three games but managed to pull out the first two thanks to some good execution down the stretch from Jrue Holiday and Andre Iguodala. The Bulls managed to slow those two on Tuesday, holding them to a combined 9 for 36 from the field. The 76ers scored just 26 points in the first half - the lowest half in franchise playoff history during the shot clock era. Spencer Hawes, who went over 20 points in Games 3 and 4, was held to 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting in Game 5 and was the focus of intense pressure by Boozer, Gibson and Omer Asik. Hawes ended up with a scratch on the left side of face running from his eye to his lip.

          TRENDS:
          - The 76ers are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
          - The Bulls are 2-6 ATS in their last eight road games.
          - The under is 9-2 in the Bulls' last 11 overall.

          BUZZER BEATERS:

          1. Noah is questionable for Game 6.

          2. The Bulls gave swingman Ronnie Brewer a series-high 29 minutes off the bench on Tuesday as a defensive stopper on Holiday, Iguodala and Evan Turner.

          3. Philadelphia F Thaddeus Young, who averaged 12.8 points in the regular season, was held scoreless on Tuesday and has not reached double figures in any of the last four games.

Los Angeles Lakers at Denver Nuggets (-1.5, 198)

THE STORY: Los Angeles Lakers center Andrew Bynum received a tutorial in his ongoing NBA education, watching the Denver Nuggets stave off elimination with a pulsating road win in Game 5. The Nuggets – admittedly fueled by Bynum's comments that close-out games can be easy – forced the series back to Denver for Game 6 on Thursday night and have a chance to deadlock the best-of-seven series at 3-3. Tuesday’s loss snapped a string of eight straight wins by the Lakers in potential close-out games.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, TNT, ALT

ABOUT THE LAKERS: A spectacular barrage of late 3-pointers by Kobe Bryant overshadowed a remarkably lackluster effort by Los Angeles in Game 5. While Bryant finished with 43 points, it speaks volumes to the Lakers' offensive inefficiency that reserve Matt Barnes took 14 shots – second only to Bryant. Barnes is 2 of 20 from behind the arc in the series, and the continued reliance on the perimeter game has prevented Los Angeles from exploiting its massive size advantage inside. Forward Pau Gasol's scoring average is down nearly five points from the regular season and his nine points in Game 5 marked the first time he failed to score in double figures since Jan. 22.

ABOUT THE NUGGETS: For those who thought backup center JaVale McGee's breakout performance in Game 3 was an aberration, guess again. The skywalking McGee scored 14 of his 21 points in the second half and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds, including six on the offensive glass. Equally impressive was the stunning contributions of backup point guard Andre Miller, who had 24 points and eight rebounds and ignited the run that allowed Nuggets to build a 15-point fourth-quarter lead. Another key development was the awakening of shooting guard Arron Afflalo, who scored 19 points. He had netted only 36 points in the first four games after averaging 18.7 points in the final month of the season.

          TRENDS:
          - The Lakers are 9-19 ATS in their last 28 games overall.
          - The Nuggets are 7-2 ATS in their last nine games overall.
          - The under is 22-7 in the last 29 meetings.

          BUZZER BEATERS:

          1. In four games at the Pepsi Center this season, Bryant is shooting a mere 30.3 percent (30 of 99).

          2. The Lakers had not lost a close-out playoff game since 2006 against Phoenix.

          3. Teams facing a 3-1 deficit have come back to win a series only eight times in NBA history.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thursday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Streaking

David Price, Tampa Bay Rays (5-1, 2.35 ERA)

The big lefty fanned a season-high 12 batters in his last outing, allowing just a single run in a 7-2 win over Oakland. In his last three starts, he has allowed three earned runs, walked just three, and has a complete game under his belt. He’s 5-2 in 14 starts against the Yanks.

CC Sabathia, New York Yankees (4-0, 4.15 ERA)

Sabathia shares the mound with Price Wednesday and is also riding a hot streak. He has thrown eight innings in each of his last three outings and has struck out 21 batters over that span. You’d like to see the ERA a little lower right now, but it’s hard to argue with 43 strikeouts in 43 1/3 innings.

                Slumping

Kevin Correia, Pittsburgh Pirates (1-2, 3.38 ERA)

The Reds touched Correia for five runs and nine hits in a 6-1 win the last time he toed the rubber. The 31-year-old also served up back-to-back home runs in the seventh inning and has just 12 strikeouts in 29 1/3 innings so far this year. The Pirates are averaging 2.8 runs in his starts.

Jason Marquis, Minnesota Twins (2-1, 5.40 ERA)

With only six games on tap Thursday, we struggled to find slumping starters. Even though Marquis walked six batters during a 7-0 loss to Seattle last week, he only gave up two earned runs on four hits over six innings. Still, the veteran seems to be holding on by a thread right now. He has only eight strikeouts this season and has a 1.54 WHIP.
