Tuesday’s betting tips: Celtics cleaning up on the road

    Weather to watch

New York Mets at Philadelphia Phillies – 15 mph winds are expected to blow out to center field.

    Who’s hot

NBA: The under is 4-1 in the Magic’s last five overall.

NBA: The Celtics are 8-3-1 ATS in their last 12 road games.

NBA: The 76ers are 7-2 ATS in their last nine games overall.

NHL: The Devils are 16-7 in their last 23 games as a road underdog.

MLB: Arizona is 10-1 in Ian Kennedy's last 11 home starts.

    Who’s not

NBA: The Pacers are 1-4 ATS in their last five home games.

NBA: The L.A. Lakers are 3-11 ATS in their last 14 games as a home favorite.

NBA: The over is 2-8 in Chicago's last 10 overall.

NHL: The Flyers are 1-5 in their last six playoff games as a favorite.

MLB: The L.A. Angels are 1-6 in Dan Haren's last seven starts.

    Key stat

0 – The New Jersey Devils have never lost a playoff series after taking a 3-1 lead, going 9-0 in those situations. The Devils get a shot to put the Philadelphia Flyers away Tuesday, but are pegged as +130 road underdogs.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Joakim Noah, Chicago Bulls – The Chicago Bulls are likely to be without their leading rebounder, Joakim Noah, again when they face the Philadelphia 76ers in Tuesday's Game 5. Noah, who missed Sunday's Game 4 with a sprained ankle sustained Friday, was still in a walking boot on Monday. Coach Tom Thibodeau said Noah is "most likely out" for Tuesday's game, a contest the Bulls must win to avoid being eliminated from the postseason.

    Game of the day

    Philadelphia 76ers at Chicago Bulls (-5, 171.5)

    Notable quotable

“(The Staples Center) is not a hot building. It's kind of a stage. It's a Broadway stage. It has a history and an energy to it, but it's not one of those where you can't hear or sometimes you're afraid to feel (the opposing fans). This is more of a stage than an intense building like Oklahoma City (has)." – Denver Nuggets coach George Karl on heading to the Staples Center Tuesday for Game 5 against the Lakers. The Nuggets are set as 6-point underdogs as they look to avoid elimination. Denver is 37-15 against the spread in its 52 road games.

    Notes and tips

Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Alex Gonzalez will be sidelined the rest of the season because of a torn anterior-cruciate ligament, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Monday. Gonzalez was injured Saturday when his knee buckled as he was sliding into second base. The Brewers signed Gonzalez in the offseason to a one-year, $4.25 million deal. He is hitting .259 with four home runs in 24 games this season.

The Broncos and general manager Brian Xanders have "parted ways," the team announced. While not defining any additional changes or how Xanders' duties will be distributed, Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway said the move was part of a shift in the structure of the football operations. Xanders had been with the organization since 2008, and was named general manager in 2009 by then-coach and head of operations Josh McDaniels. He had one year remaining on his contract.

      Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Betting matchup for the Players' Championship this weekend.......

-- Rory McIlroy -125 vs Lee Westwood +105

-- Hunter Mahan -120 vs Jim Furyk even

-- Steve Stricker -120 vs Matt Kuchar even

-- Jason Dufner -110 vs Webb Simpson -110

-- Phil Mickelson -110 vs Eldrick Woods -110

-- Sergio Garcia -130 vs Rickie Fowler +110

      *******************

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Random stuff from America's favorite city

      13) I'm on vacation in Las Vegas, so I'll apologize in advance for the erratic timing of my postings for the next few days. Fun comes first this week.

      12) On my flight from Albany to Chicago, guy sitting next to me broke out of those sleeping masks you see in the movies, the silk kind that look like they might match Hugh Hefner's bathrobe. Interesting.

      11) Memphis has scored 386 points, Clippers 385 in their playoff series, but LA has won three of the four games, and thats what counts.

      10) Congrats to the Phoenix Coyotes and their fans; either Phoenix or the LA Kings are going to be in the NHL Finals, which is pretty cool.

      9) Rangers tied their game with a power play goal with 0:06 left, then won in OT on another power play goal that came off the same major penalty. I wonder if the NHL offices are scared of a Phoenix-Washington Cup final? You know New York-LA would be their dream matchup.

      8) Minnesota Twins have 20 hits in their last six games; in last 85 years, only one team has ever had less over any six-game span, and they played before World War II. Minnesota has some decent hitters, too.

      7) Madison Square Garden is actually on fifth floor of a 10-floor building, which seems odd for a major sports arena, but Mike Emrick said so during Monday night's hockey game, so it must be true.

      6) Big East canned their ineffective Commissioner John Marinatto; actually, he technically "resigned", which is comical. League has San Diego State in it for football; whoever's idea that was should get fired, too.

      5) Its about time ESPN put Allen Iverson's "Practice?!?!?!" and Jim Mora's "Playoffs?!?!?!?!" sound bytes to bed. Enough already. I don't care if it was the 10-year anniversary of Iverson's rant. Use your freakin' imagination and come up with something else to put on the air.

      4) Cole Hamels got suspended for five games for drilling the Harper kid on Sunday night, but all it really means is that his next start gets pushed back one day. Charlie Manuel actually advised Hamels to be less honest when he talks to the media. Will Manuel get fined for that?

      3) Southwest Airlines consistently does an excellent job handling luggage on my flights. Hope I didn't just jinx the trip home.

      2) So I'm sitting in a sportsbook by myself late Monday night, watching SportsCenter on big screen with a cold drink and contemplating life while looking thru the Week 1 NFL lines. There has to be value there, right?

      1) Just a question of where does that value lie? How the hell are the Saints double digit faves over anyone? No head coach, no GM and Drew Brees is still unsigned. If I bet an NFL game tomorrow, it would be Redskins, +10.

Playoff payoffs: Best bets of the NBA and NHL postseasons

There's an age-old theory in betting that says you ride the hot hand. If a team is on a streak, don't try to buck the streak, don't try to pick the day when the streak ends. Because if you go the other way, and ride the surging team, you can only lose once.

Well, with the NBA and NHL postseasons in full swing, there are many hot hands out there. And though none are riding a monumental streak that you can jump on, there are several teams and plays that have been quite kind to bettors.

So, let's analyze some of them and give you a glimpse of some of the teams you might want to jump on before it's too late:

        LOS ANGELES KINGS

It took the Kings until the last day or so of the regular season to even wedge themselves into the playoffs. But with the way they're playing these days, none of that stuff matters.

The Kings are 8-1, and are headed to the West Finals after disposing of the top two seeds in the conference: Vancouver and St. Louis. They were a decided underdog, too, in five of those wins. If you bet $100 on Los Angeles in each of its postseason contests, you’d be $872 richer today.

The Kings were 20/1 to win the Stanley Cup just three weeks ago. Now, as they sit and wait for their opponent in the league semifinals, they are the Cup favorites at 2-1 according to the bookies.

        PHILADELPHIA 76ERS

The 76ers played terrible basketball over the second half of the shortened season. They took advantage of a slew of early-season home games, planted themselves in first place in the Atlantic Division, and then ever so slowly fell off the radar, finally giving way to Boston for the division title.

Well, Doug Collins' crew might get its shot at revenge and redemption. Because if these two 3-1 series leads hold -- Philadelphia over Chicago, and Boston over Atlanta -- you'll get a classic meeting between two East rivals, the Celtics and Sixers, and wouldn't that be fun?

But first things first, the 76ers need to close the deal against the short-handed Bulls, and though it won't be easy, the Sixers are headed into Game 5 playing their best ball.

The Sixers were paying +1100 at most shops to oust the top-seeded Chicago Bulls before the series began, and now, they are four quarters away from the upset. Derrick's Rose's knee says you're welcome.

The Sixers not only lead the series, 3-1, they are 3-1 against the spread, and have held the Bulls to just 82.6 points per game since Chicago lost Rose. Keep in mind, mostly in garbage time, Philadelphia covered its last four regular-season games, so the 76ers head into Tuesday's Game 5 on a 7-1 ATS tear.

        PHILADELPHIA FLYERS OVERS

The news is not as good for the City of Brotherly Love's other team these days, but hope is still alive. The Flyers dismantled the Pittsburgh Penguins in Round 1, and quickly vaulted to the top of everyone's betting sheets. But the Devils have cooled them off with a quickness, and New Jersey, as a result, takes a 3-1 series lead into Tuesday's Game 5. Not good for Philadelphia.

But if you were ahead of the game a few weeks back, and jumped on Philadelphia's offensive depth and goaltending question marks, then your wallet has been padded with a wealth of overs. The Flyers have played 10 postseason games, and seven of them have gone over. The sportsbooks got wise to their firepower in Round 1, and established Games 6 and 7 with over-under totals of seven, and that's the only thing keeping Philadelphia from being 9-1 over.

        EXTRA POINTS

You wouldn't think so considering their offensive power, but the Miami Heat defense has been just as strong in Round 1. So, there is plenty of value with Miami as an under team. Headed into Game 5 versus the Knicks, the over is just 1-3 in the series. The same can be said for the Lakers. They have clamped down on Denver, and through four games, the over is just 1-3, as well. The Nuggets are averaging just 93.7 points per game, while the average over-under in this series has been 203. And the aforementioned Devils are 7-4 in the postseason overall, but have won five of their last six, including three in overtime.

What bettors need to know: Tuesday's NHL playoff action
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Jersey Devils at Philadelphia Flyers (-140, 5.5)

          THE STORY
: The Philadelphia Flyers face elimination in Game 5 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series with the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night - and they'll have to make do without their top player. Forward Claude Giroux was given a one-game suspension for hitting Devils forward Dainius Zubrus in the head during second-period action in Game 4. Giroux has been far and away the best player in the Stanley Cup playoffs, and his absence will make an already difficult task even more daunting.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBCS, CBC

ABOUT THE DEVILS: If there is any solace for the Flyers, it may have been provided by their opponents. The Devils had to do without Ilya Kovalchuk, their regular-season scoring leader, for Game 2 of the best-of-seven series. With Kovalchuk on the sidelines with a lower-body injury, the Devils struck for four goals in the third period of a 4-1 victory that evened the series and kickstarted a three-game winning streak. New Jersey hasn't been to the conference finals since 2003, but isn't making any plans yet. "There's still a long ways to go," said captain Zach Parise. "It's a very good team over there and we gotta get that fourth one."

ABOUT THE FLYERS: Giroux met with the league to state his case, but his argument wasn't persuasive enough to prevent the one-game ban. "That's not the kind of player I am," he told reporters shortly after the suspension was announced Monday afternoon. "I think it's the first time I hit someone in the head. I was just trying to finish my hit there, and we were just talking about that." His removal from the lineup will put more pressure on the rest of the Flyers' forwards - led by Scott Hartnell, who has two goals and an assist against the Devils but has been a minus in every game so far.

          TRENDS:
          - The Devils are 4-10 in the last 14 meetings in Philadelphia.
          - The Flyers are 2-5 in their last seven overall.
          - The over is 7-2 in Flyers last nine games as a favorite.

          OVERTIME:

          1. Philadelphia lost three straight games just once during the regular season, dropping consecutive outings to New Jersey, the New York Rangers and New York Islanders from Feb. 4-7.

          2. Giroux leads all playoff scorers with 17 points (eight goals, nine assists) in 10 games.

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Celtics at Atlanta Hawks (-1, 173.5)

            THE STORY
: The Boston Celtics look to close out the series and advance to the second round when they visit the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday. Boston took a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference showdown when it routed the Hawks 101-79 on Sunday in its best performance of the series. Atlanta faces a tough comeback trail since only eight teams in NBA history have recovered from a 3-1 deficit. Boston has won the last three games.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT, Comcast SportsNet New England (Boston), Sport South (Atlanta)

ABOUT THE CELTICS: The easy Game 4 victory in which Boston led by as many as 43 points gave coach Doc Rivers ample time to rest some of his beat-up players. Forward Paul Pierce re-injured his left knee midway through the second quarter but returned for a short time in the third. He had 24 points in just 17 minutes and doesn’t want to see the series return to Boston. “The NBA is a weird league and one game could give a team confidence,” Pierce said. “We hope that we can take them and advance in the series in the next game.” Guards Ray Allen (ankle) and Avery Bradley (shoulder) also are playing through injuries.

ABOUT THE HAWKS: Center Al Harford played for the first time in nearly four months and performed decently in Game 4 considering his long stretch of inactivity. Horford had been sidelined with a torn pectoral and scored 12 points in 20 minutes. Forward Josh Smith returned after missing Game 3 with a knee injury and had 15 points and 13 rebounds. Guard Joe Johnson was a non-factor with a series-low nine points during the team’s humbling performance. “We’re going to find out what we’re made of,” Hawks coach Larry Drew said. “There is nothing but Game 5 right now. That’s all we have to fight for right now.”

            TRENDS:
            - The under is 5-1 in the last six meetings in Atlanta.
            - The Celtics are 15-6-2 ATS in their last 23 games overall.
            - The Hawks are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 playoff games as a favorite.

            BUZZER BEATERS:

            1. Sunday’s debacle was Atlanta’s 12th playoff loss by 20 or more points since 2008.

            2. Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo had 20 points, 16 assists and one turnover in Game 4 and is averaging 19 points and 13 assists in the series.

            3. The Hawks are shooting just 38.5 percent from the field and 25.6 percent from 3-point range.

Orlando Magic at Indiana Pacers (-10.5, 179)

            THE STORY
: The Indiana Pacers can advance to the second round for the first time in seven years by beating the visiting Orlando Magic on Tuesday. Indiana has a 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference series after winning three straight games. Two wins were by double digits before the Pacers recorded a 101-99 overtime victory in Saturday’s Game 4. The Magic are seeking to become the ninth team in NBA history to recover from a 3-1 deficit.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBATV, Fox Sports Florida (Orlando), Fox Sports Indiana (Indiana)

ABOUT THE MAGIC: Orlando refused to roll over in Game 4 and rallied from a 19-point, final-quarter hole to force overtime. Jason Richardson scored 25 points for his second strong performance of the series. He had 17 points in the opening game before combining for just seven in the middle two games. Post player Glen Davis has been the Magic’s most productive player and is averaging 20 points and 9.5 rebounds. The Game 5 task is straightforward, according to guard Jameer Nelson. “We have to go up to Indiana and get one,” Nelson said. “It’s just one game at a time. You don’t get two wins at one time. You have to win one.”

ABOUT THE PACERS: Forward David West was ferocious in Game 4 with 26 points and 12 rebounds for his top performance of the series. West is averaging 16.8 points and 10 rebounds. “He’s just a beast in the post,” Pacers coach Frank Vogel said. “He kept pounding them. He’d either score, of if they double-teamed him, he’d kick it out. We got some open 3s out of it. He’s quite a weapon.” Center Roy Hibbert has also fared well in the interior with Orlando center Dwight Howard sidelined. Hibbert is averaging 11 points, 11.8 rebounds and 4.3 blocks and has recorded double-digit board efforts in all four games.

            TRENDS:
            - The Magic are 7-3 ATS in the last 10 meetings.
            - The Pacers are 2-5 ATS in their last seven games overall.
            - The under is 5-1 in Orlando's last six games as an underdog.

            BUZZER BEATERS:

            1. Indiana has outscored Orlando 108-60 in the third quarter.

            2. Pacers forward Danny Granger scored 47 points in the two games in Orlando and is averaging 20.5 points in the series.

            3. The Magic are shooting just 33.3 percent from 3-point range, with Nelson (3 for 17) and guard J.J. Redick (3 for 15) having the most trouble.

Denver Nuggets at Los Angeles Lakers (-6, 199)

            THE STORY
: The Los Angeles Lakers can close out their first-round playoff series on their home floor when they host the Denver Nuggets in Game 5 Tuesday night. The Lakers took a commanding 3-1 lead in the best-of-seven series with a gritty four-point win in Denver on Sunday night, putting the Nuggets in the unenviable situation of having to beat Los Angeles three straight. “It's a powerful challenge. I don't think it's an impossible challenge," Nuggets coach George Karl said.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, TNT, Fox Sports West

ABOUT THE NUGGETS: Denver did not play well in any particular facet in Game 4, but still found itself in a tie game with only 66 seconds to play. The points that had come so easily off transition in Game 3 were scarce for the Nuggets, the league's highest-scoring team during the regular season. Point guard Ty Lawson was limited to 11 points after back-to-back 25-point outings. Danilo Gallinari finally broke out of his slump with a series-high 20 points, but Denver received only a combined 18 points from starters Arron Afflalo, Kenneth Faried and Timofey Mozgov.

ABOUT THE LAKERS: Los Angeles' reserves stepped up big time Sunday. Steve Blake scored eight of his 10 points in the final quarter, including a killer 3-pointer with 18.9 seconds that all but buried the Nuggets. Forward Jordan Hill added 12 points and 11 boards, marking the third time in the series he has reached double figures in rebounds. Such contributions cannot be minimized given the fact that the Lakers are getting next to nothing from Ron Artest fill-in Devin Ebanks and reserve Matt Barnes, who have combined to score a total of 20 points in the last three games.

            TRENDS:
            - The under is 35-17 in the last 52 meetings.
            - The Nuggets are 8-0 ATS in their last eight games following a straight up loss.
            - The Lakers are 4-12 ATS in their last 16 home games.

            BUZZER BEATERS:

            1. Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant will be happy to return to the Staples Center. He struggled with his shot and scored 22 points in each game at Denver after erupting for 69 points in the first two games of the series.

            2. Denver has trailed 3-1 in a playoffs series on 10 occasions and has lost all 10.

            3. Lakers PG Ramon Sessions had missed 10 straight attempts from behind the arc until hitting the go-ahead 3-pointer in the final minute of Game 4.

            Philadelphia 76ers at Chicago Bulls (-5, 171.5)

            THE STORY
: The Chicago Bulls are putting up a strong effort, they just don’t appear to have the weapons left. The Bulls will be looking to avoid becoming the fifth top seed in NBA history to lose an opening-round series when they host the eighth-seeded Philadelphia 76ers in Game 5 on Tuesday. The 76ers have taken advantage of Derrick Rose being out of the lineup and have relied on big baskets from Jrue Holiday in taking the last three games.

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, CSN (Philadelphia), CSCH (Chicago), NBATV

ABOUT THE 76ERS: While Rose being out of the lineup for Chicago has proven to be a huge advantage in Philadelphia’s favor, the team also made significant lineup changes after Game 1 that have paid dividends. Spencer Hawes moved into the starting lineup at center and has led the team in scoring in each of the last two games, going for 22 points on 9-of-11 shooting in Sunday’s Game 4 after posting 21 in Game 3. Evan Turner has moved into the shooting guard spot, which has allowed Holiday to attack the basket more - especially since Rose is not standing in front of him on defense. Holiday went 1 for 13 in the first half on Sunday but recovered to shoot 6 for 10 in the second half and score eight points in the final 4:13.

ABOUT THE BULLS: Rose (knee) is out while starting center Joakim Noah (ankle) missed Game 4 and is day-to-day for the remainder of the series. Without Rose, Chicago has had no one to turn to for scoring late in games. All-Star Luol Deng has been bottled up by the Philadelphia defense, averaging eight points in the last three games, while C.J. Watson has struggled with his consistency in Rose’s starting point guard spot and Richard Hamilton has faded in second halves. Carlos Boozer and Taj Gibson were strong on the inside in Game 4 but struggled to guard Hawes away from the basket.

            TRENDS:
            - The over is 14-6-1 in the last 21 meetings.
            - The Bulls are 0-4 ATS in their last four games as an underdog.
            - The 76ers are 7-2 ATS in their last nine games overall.

            BUZZER BEATERS:

            1. Philadelphia has not won a playoff series since 2003.

            2. The Bulls went to the free throw line 17 fewer times than the 76ers in Game 4.

            3. The 76ers have shot under 40 percent from the field in each of the last two games but have won both.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Streaking

James Shields, Tampa Bay Rays (5-0, 3.05 ERA)

Shields became the AL’s first five-game winner by throwing six solid innings in a 5-4 win over the Mariners in his last start. He struck out a season-high 11 batters in that outing. However, he also yielded a pair of homers for the second straight start and also walked four batters. Shields has thrown at least 112 pitches in each of his last four trips to the hill.

Ricky Romero, Toronto Blue Jays (4-0, 3.64 ERA)

Romero didn’t have his best stuff in his last outing, allowing five runs over eight innings, but it was enough to help the Jays to an 11-5 win over Texas. Romero walked three straight batters in the fifth before allowing a two-run double. He has chucked at least eight innings three times already this season.

                    Slumping

John Danks, Chicago White Sox (2-4, 6.51 ERA)

Danks was drilled for seven runs (six earned) and a pair of home runs in a loss to the Indians last week. It was the second straight start in which he allowed seven runs and he also committed two errors. "I know I will get this ship righted," he told reporters, "but it sure as hell would be nice if we got it righted pretty soon, 'cause it's getting pretty damn frustrating."

Kevin Millwood, Seattle Mariners (0-3, 5.34 ERA)

Millwood dropped his third straight start last week, dropping a 4-3 decision to the Texas Rangers. The veteran is still looking for his first win with the Mariners, but has worked into the seventh inning in his last two trips to the hill. The M’s are averaging only 2.3 runs over his last three starts.

Magic @ Pacers (3-1)-- Orlando forced OT in Game 4 loss, after being down 12 after three quarters; their bench was combined -49 in game, as Clark was dismal -24 in 17 minutes. Figures to be curtains for Orlando team that scored 80+ points in only one of four series games. Indiana shot 46.8%/46.4% in two games in Florida, after shooting 39.5%/42.9% in two games here. Magic got to line 28 times last game, nine more than in any other series game, but they needed to win that last game.

Celtics (3-1) @ Hawks-- Would be nice if Atlanta showed some pride in this game, after mailing in gutless performance in its 101-79 Game 4 loss (was 64-41 at half). Johnson had only nine points in Game 4, as Celtics have given him fits this series. Boston made 11-26 from arc last game, after being 7-38 outside arc in first three three games. Hawks scored 80-84-79 points in last three games, and the game they scored 84 went OT; their starting guards were 4-13 Sunday- they need a lot more there.

76ers (3-1) @ Bulls-- Philly outscored Chicago 48-25 from foul line last two games (84-52 for series); Bulls' starting Gs went 8-27 from floor in last game-- playing without Rose/Noah is obviously tough for Chicago, which forced total of only 23 turnovers in three series losses. Hawes had 21-22 points for Philly in last two games; if Bulls can't even contain him, they ain't going to win. Two games here both went over; two in Philly stayed under. League-wide, favorites are 18-14 vs spread in this round.

Nuggets @ Lakers (3-1)-- Denver had chance to even series Sunday, but couldn't finish; Gallinari flopped twice at end and didn't get either call, so now Nuggets will get eliminated here- they're 2-6 against the Lakers this year, losing by 15-4 here in Games 1-2 of this series. Jordan Hill gave Lakers 12 points, 11 boards last game, as bench held their own, unlike in Game 3. LA is just 19-74 from arc in series. Weird thing about this series is road team took more foul shots in all four games.
