Monday’s betting tips: O’s, BoSox exhaust pitching staffs

    Who’s hot

NBA: The San Antonio Spurs are 37-10-4 ATS in their last 51 games overall.

NBA: The over is 5-1 in the Clippers’ last six overall.

NHL: The under is 5-0-5 in the New York Rangers’ last 10 overall.

NHL: Phoenix is 12-3 in its last 15 overall.

MLB: The L.A. Dodgers are 24-7 in their last 31 home games.

    Who’s not

NBA: The under is 9-3-1 in Utah’s last 13 games as a home underdog.

NBA: The Memphis Grizzlies are 1-4 ATS in their last five road games.

NHL: The Capitals are 1-5 in their last six games following a win.

NHL: The under is 1-3-1 in the Nashville Predators' last five road games.

MLB: The Mariners are 1-7 in their last eight overall.

    Key stat

22.9 – The Memphis Grizzlies shot just 22.9 percent from the floor in the fourth quarters of their Game 1 and Game 3 losses to the Los Angeles Clippers. The Grizzlies are 0-2-1 against the spread so far in the series and are pegged as 1.5-point underdogs for Monday’s Game 4.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Matt Kemp, Los Angeles Dodgers – Kemp sat out most of Sunday’s game with a tight left hamstring and his status for Monday’s game against San Francisco is uncertain. He did pinch hit in the seventh inning to keep his streak of consecutive games played alive. He leads active big leaguers with 393 consecutive games played. Kemp leads the league in home runs, runs, total bases and slugging percentage. He's hitting .388 with 12 homers and 27 RBIs.

    Game of the day

San Antonio Spurs at Utah Jazz (+8, 198.5)

    Notable quotable

“They’re not happy we’re down 3-1 in this series. When you’re a player and been a good player for a long time, you want to be on the ice. You don’t want to be in the stands, so they’re back in the right mind-set that they can make a difference here.” – Nashville Predators coach Barry Trotz on Alexander Radulov and Andrei Kostitsyn, who have been benched for the last two games after missing curfew last week. Both players are expected to return to the lineup Monday against Phoenix.

    Notes and tips

The San Antonio Spurs are averaging an NBA-best 107.3 points per game in their opening round series against the Utah Jazz. The Spurs have covered the number in each of their three wins against the Jazz and look to complete the sweep Monday as 8-point favorites.

Roy Halladay is expected to make his scheduled start Monday against the New York Mets after leaving the team to deal with a personal matter last week. Halladay was shelled in his last trip to the hill, allowing 12 hits and eight earned runs over 5 1/3 innings in a 15-13 loss to the Atlanta Braves.

The Detroit Tigers activated starting pitcher Doug Fister from the 15-day DL and he’ll be on the hill against his former team, the Seattle Mariners, on Monday. Fister was out with a left costochondral strain. He was 8-1 with the Tigers after last year’s trade with a 1.79 ERA.

The Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles depleted their pitching staffs during Sunday’s 17-inning marathon. Both squads ended up using a position player to pitch by the end of the game, which Baltimore won 9-6. The BoSox now travel to Kansas City to begin their series with the Royals, while Baltimore heads back home to face Texas.

      Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

ESPN the Magazine posted the percentage of NHL points scored by guys not from North America.......here's a breakdown by country........

      -- Sweden 26.9%

      -- Czech Republic 23.4%

      -- Russia 13.6%

      -- Finland 12.2%

      -- Slovakia 6.8%

      -- Denmark 3.1%

      ********************

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.........

      13) There have been two big league games this season with no walks-- take away those four teams, and teams that haven't walked anyone this season are 42-16. It pays to throw strikes.

      12) Clay Buchholz has started six games this season, allowing 34 runs in 32.2 IP. Major red flag for the Red Sox.

      11) Best records this season in one-run games:
      Indians 6-1, Braves 5-1, Rays 7-2, Mets 7-3, Dodgers 9-5

      10) Worst records in one-run games:
      Cardinals 1-5, Phillies 1-4, Angels 3-6, Mariners 3-7, Arizona 4-10

      9) Colorado led the Braves 5-0 after first inning Friday; led 6-0 after second inning Saturday, but lost both games. Not good.

      8) In 1962, a pitcher named Bob Buhl went 0-70 batting for a whole season; for a whole season, he was 0-for-freakin'-70, with 36 strikeouts, six walks. Odd part is that two years earlier, he was 14-89 (.157) at the plate.

      7) Senior guard Mark Lyons transferred from Xavier to Arizona; he wants to play point guard, but Coach Mack obviously didn't think he has what it takes to do so. Odd thing is that Arizona's coach is Sean Miller, whose last job was as head coach at Xavier.

      6) Orioles just beat Boston 9-6 in 17 innings; both winning/losing pitchers started the game as the DHs. Chris Davis struck out five times, grounded into a double play, and was the winning pitcher. Wow.

      5) Adrian Gonzalez was 0-8, the first AL cleanup hitter to go 0-8 in a game since Cleveland's Andre Thornton in 1984.

      4) Orioles are 19-9 and in first place; if the AL playoffs started Monday, three AL East teams would make it: Orioles-Rays-Blue Jays.

      3) Bad news for the Nationals; just as Ryan Zimmerman comes back from a shoulder injury, Jayson Werth hurts his left wrist. Its always something.

      2) Congrats to the LA Kings on sweeping the Blues, LA's first-ever sweep of a best-of-7 series, and they've been around since 1967. Kings are on a roll after coming into the playoffs as the #8 seed in the west.

      1) Disappointed that Kentucky-Indiana won't be playing anymore; Calipari wanted to switch the games to neutral sites, Indiana wanted to keep games on campus. At the end of the day, the fans lose out. Too bad.

What bettors need to know: Monday's NHL playoff action
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington Capitals at New York Rangers (-140. 4.5)

        THE STORY
: John Tortorella has developed a reputation for some fiery interviews. After the New York Rangers dropped a 3-2 decision in Game 4 to level the Eastern Conference semifinal series, Tortorella wasn't too forthcoming during a 27-second post-game press conference. The top-seeded Rangers will look to give their coach a chance to share his thoughts on Monday when they face the Washington Capitals in Game 5 at Madison Square Garden.

        TV: 7:30 p.m., NBCS, CBC

ABOUT THE CAPITALS: While defenseman Mike Green netted a power-play goal with 5:48 remaining in the third period, rookie Braden Holtby continues to be the star of the show for seventh-seeded Washington. Although he only made 18 saves in Game 4, Holtby has come up big in denying the Rangers. The young netminder has had a bit of help, as well. Defenseman Jeff Schultz was credited with a team-high nine of his club's 26 blocked shots. "There were a lot of red spiders in front of me," Holtby said of his teammates.

ABOUT THE RANGERS: After a day to cool down, Tortorella talked at length - well, five minutes - to the press on Sunday. He offered praise to Artem Anisimov, who has made his presence felt in this series after registering just three assists in the conference quarterfinals against Ottawa. The 23-year-old Russian scored his second goal of the series in Game 4 and has three points against Washington. Marian Gaborik has gotten untracked after an eight-game goal-scoring drought by tallying for the second straight contest. Rookie Chris Kreider was benched for a significant portion of Game 4 after his poor turnover led to Alex Ovechkin's first-period goal. The former Boston College star logged just 7:34 of ice time.

        TRENDS:
        - The under is 3-0-4 in the last seven meetings.
        - Washington has won four of its last five road games.
        - The under is 5-0-5 in New York's last 10.

        OVERTIME:

        1. New York was up in arms after Ovechkin left his feet and blasted defenseman Dan Girardi in the head during the second period. Ovechkin received a penalty for the play, but the NHL is not expected to administer further punishment, according to multiple reports.

        2. Washington isn't shy about playing in close games. Ten of the Capitals' 11 postseason tilts have been decided by one goal - with five of those contests going to overtime.

        3. With 29 goals, Ovechkin is one tally shy of tying Peter Bondra for the Capitals' all-time postseason lead. The Russian's 57 points puts him third in franchise history, behind coach Dale Hunter (72) and Mike Ridley (60).

Nashville Predators at Phoenix Coyotes (-115, 5)

        THE STORY
: Mike Smith has positioned the Phoenix Coyotes on the cusp of history. The netminder recorded his second shutout of the postseason by turning aside all 25 shots in Friday's 1-0 triumph in Game 4. The third-seeded Coyotes, who own a 3-1 edge in the Western Conference semifinal series, will be looking to advance to the next round for the first time in franchise history. Phoenix will try to do precisely that in Game 5 on Monday at Jobing.com Arena.

        TV: 10 p.m., NBCS, TSN

ABOUT THE PREDATORS: With his club's back against the wall, coach Barry Trotz declared that there is a "high probability" that Alexander Radulov and Andrei Kostitsyn return to the ice for Game 5. The pair has been sidelined for the last two contests for violating team rules. Radulov leads the Predators with six points in the postseason while Kostitsyn has chipped in with four. Without the duo, fourth-seeded Nashville mustered just three shots on three power plays in Game 5. "Maybe they could have made a difference, but we will never know that," Trotz said. "The guys that played played well and created lots of chances. We just had to bury one of them, that's all."

ABOUT THE COYOTES: Captain Shane Doan has shown a knack for scoring the timely goal during his 16-year career. After netting the clinching tally in Game 2 of the series, Doan responded with the lone goal in Game 4. With 5:35 remaining in the first period, Doan's backhanded attempt caromed off both defenseman Roman Josi and Pekka Rinne before entering the net. Although Sunday was an off-day for the clubs, defenseman Rostislav Klesla was expected to have a disciplinary hearing with the NHL for his boarding penalty on Nashville wing Matt Halischuk.

        TRENDS:
        - The under is 3-0-1 in Nashville's last four games as an underdog.
        - The Coyotes are 7-1 in their last eight games as a favorite.
        - The underdog is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings.

        OVERTIME:

        1. Nashville's leading scorer Patric Hornqvist continues to be snake-bitten. While logging three official shots on goal in Game 4, the 25-year-old Swede had nine that were blocked or missed the net. Hornqvist, who has just one goal in the playoffs, had 27 tallies this season.

        2. While Smith was credited with the shutout, the Coyotes did their best to prevent many scoring chances. Phoenix blocked 16 shots - including four by veteran fourth-liner Daymond Langkow

          Monday, May 7

Spurs (3-0) @ Jazz-- Spurs won nine of last ten games vs Utah, winning four of last five played here by 8-4-10-12 points. Everyone, epecially the Jazz, knows this series is over, just a question of when; Utah was just 14-26 from foul line in last game. San Antonio has won its last 13 games (12-0-1 vs spread) with all three games in this series staying under total. Not even sure what else to type here, other than Utah shot more foul shots every game, and still lost all three, by 15-21-12 points.

Grizzlies @ Clippers (2-1)-- LA shot at least 5.3% higher from floor in first three games, Grizzlies made 60-78 on foul line in last couple games, LA just 26-48 (13-30 in Game 3). Clippers won six of last eight series games, with home team winning seven of last nine, five of six this year. Gutty Butler (broken hand) played 22 minutes in Game 3; hard to put a value on that kind of toughness. Memphis lost last four visits here, by 7-7-1-16 points. Clipper bench was +24 in Saturday's win.

What bettors need to know: Monday's NBA playoff action
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Spurs at Utah Jazz (+8, 198.5)

          THE STORY
: In order for the Utah Jazz to extend their first-round series with the San Antonio Spurs, they'll need to figure out how to win a quarter. Utah goes into the fourth game of the best-of-seven Monday night having been outscored in 10 of the 12 quarters the teams have played so far. The Spurs, who have outscored Utah by 62 points through the first three games, can join the Oklahoma City Thunder in the second round with a victory Monday.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT, Fox Sports Southwest Plus

ABOUT THE SPURS: None of the other seven first-round showdowns has been this one-sided. The Spurs are averaging an incredible 107.3 points per game - 7.5 more than the runner-up Thunder - while limiting the Jazz to just 88. San Antonio is shooting better than 51 percent for the series, with Utah having no answer for the duo of Tim Duncan and Tony Parker. Duncan says he expects the Jazz to make things difficult in Game 4. "We know they're going to come out," he said. "They have a lot of pride and they're going to come out and it's going to be a tough closeout game, especially here in Utah."

ABOUT THE JAZZ: Utah's best chance to make a statement in the series came late in Game 3, when the club found itself within five points in the fourth quarter before yielding a back-breaking 9-2 run. Jazz center Al Jefferson, making his first playoff appearance since 2005, says his team has had no margin for error at any point in the series. "We can't make mistakes," he said. "We've got to play a perfect game to even have a chance to beat a team like this. "We made too many mistakes during the crunch time of the game and they made us pay every time."

          TRENDS:
          - Utah is 1-5-1 against the spread in its last six meetings with San Antonio.
          - San Antonio is 17-6-3 ATS in its last 26 road games.
          - The under is 5-0 in Utah's last five games.

          BUZZER BEATERS:

          1. No NBA team has ever rallied from 3-0 down to win a best-of-seven series.

          2. Jefferson leads the Jazz in playoff scoring (15.9 ppg) but is the only Utah regular shooting better than 43.5 percent from the field.

          3. The Spurs have dominated despite the struggles of G/F Manu Ginobili, who is averaging just 5.7 points on 31.8 percent shooting so far

Monday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Streaking

Lance Lynn, St. Louis Cardinals (5-0, 1.60 ERA)

Lynn gave up two runs for the first time this season in his last start, improving to 5-0 with a 12-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The win made him the NL’s first five-game winner as he struck out six and walked one while sitting down 15 consecutive Pirates at one point. With five pitches in his arsenal, Lynn’s giving batters fits right now.

Ted Lilly, Los Angeles Dodgers (3-0, 1.38 ERA)

Lilly had to leave his last outing early with a strained oblique, but is expected to be 100 percent for Monday’s date with the Giants. His 1.38 ERA puts him fourth in the league. The 36-year-old veteran lefty has just 15 strikeouts compared to nine walks this year.

                  Slumping

Francisco Liriano, Minnesota Twins (0-4, 9.97 ERA)

Liriano returned to the rotation last week after the club skipped his turn before that, but couldn’t snap his winless skid. He looked great at times, but also allowed a pair of solo homers and walked three while putting the leadoff batter on base in five innings during the 4-0 loss to the Angels.

Yovani Gallardo, Milwaukee Brewers (1-3, 5.79 ERA)

After getting pounded by the Cardinals, Gallardo managed to throw six quality innings against Padres. However, he still took the loss in a 5-0 decision, and is winless in five starts. He gave up four home runs in his first start of the season, but hasn’t allowed another since then.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rounding the bases: This week's best MLB bets
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in Major League Baseball (All records and statistics through Saturday):
                  HOT TEAM: Baltimore Orioles

                  THIS SEASON: 18-9.
                  LAST WEEK: 5-1.
THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: Home to the Rangers for four, home to the Rays for three.

THE SKINNY: If you were waiting for the proverbial other shoe to drop with these Orioles, this week might be your week. After Baltimore disposed of the Red Sox and Yankees fairly easily last week, the rubber will hit the road as Camden Yards will house two of the hottest teams in baseball: Texas and Tampa Bay.

Clearly, there’s a long way to go, but manager Buck Showalter has things headed in the right direction with the Orioles. Look no further than last week’s series with New York. The Orioles won two of three, and allowed just three runs total. The offseason trade that shipped starter Jeremy Guthrie to the Rockies seems like a distant memory now, especially with two starters in the rotation -- Jason Hammel (2.09) and Wei-Yin Chen (2.76) -- sitting with ERAs below 3.00.

                  COLD TEAM: Seattle Mariners

                  THIS SEASON: 12-17.
                  LAST WEEK: 1-5.
THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: Home to the Tigers three, at the Yankees for three.

THE SKINNY: The age-old dilemma with the Mariners in the Safeco Field Era is back and as frustrating as ever for their fans. They simply cannot produce enough runs when it counts.

In a four-game sweep at the hands of the Rays last week, Seattle produced just 11 runs total. The M’s are getting their share of extra-base hits but their on-base percentage is close to the worst in the majors, and their .227 batting average with runners in scoring position isn’t helping bringing in the few runners who do get on.

                  OVER TEAM: Houston Astros

                  O/U THIS SEASON: 20-7.
                  O/U LAST WEEK: 4-1.
THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: Home to the Marlins for three, at the Pirates for three.

THE SKINNY: You’ll certainly have a clash of styles this week as the Astros run into two of the strongest under teams out there: Miami and Pittsburgh. But with the way Houston plays ball, you’re going to have a legitimate shot at cashing an over on every night. J.D. Martinez and Chris Johnson have combined for 38 RBIs, and Carlos Lee -- content (for now) to play for a team in a rebuilding mode -- just keeps on chugging.

And a very underrated statistic in overs is walks, and the patient Astros are getting their share. Martinez has 19, Jed Lowrie and Jordan Schafer have 13 each and there are five hitters overall with at least 10.

From the pitching perspective, it's about batting-average against when it comes to overs. And Houston has struggled there, leading to the shootouts. Three starters -- Bud Norris (.265), Lucas Harrell (.269), and J.A. Happ (.276) -- need to come down for the Astros' sake. For the sake of overs players? They can stay where they are.

                  UNDER TEAM: Cincinnati Reds

                  O/U THIS SEASON: 11-14-1.
                  O/U LAST WEEK: 0-3-1.
THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: At the Brewers for three, home to the Nationals for three.

THE SKINNY: Nothing that a series against the Pirates can't cure when it comes to unders. The Reds headed into Sunday's series finale at Pittsburgh riding that weeklong four-game overless streak, and more could be on the way.

In a quick two-game set with the Cubs last week, Cincinnati scored just five runs total. And the bullpen has made it clear it is intent on holding these unders. Aroldis Chapman will be a starter someday soon, but out of the bullpen, he's 2-0 with 23 strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA, and an 0.68 WHIP.

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Memphis Grizzlies at Los Angeles Clippers (-1.5, 182.5)

                      THE STORY
: While the "eye test" says the Memphis Grizzlies have been the better team, the Los Angeles Clippers aren't buying it. An inability to protect fourth-quarter leads has resulted in two one-point losses and left the Grizzlies staring at a 2-1 series deficit entering Game 4 Monday night in Los Angeles. Though it was not on the magnitude of the stunning 27-point comeback in Game 1, the Clippers erased a seven-point fourth-quarter lead Saturday by holding Memphis without a field goal for seven minutes.

                      TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES: Marc Gasol's stat line in Game 3 (11 points, 10 rebounds) suggests a solid performance, but the 7-foot-1 center attempted only five shots – his second-lowest total of the season. Memphis appeared in control after Gasol's lone fourth-quarter shot provided a six-point edge with 7:11 to play, but its next field goal came with 13 seconds left. Facing a Clippers front line that is underwhelming physically, the Grizzlies know they need to do a better job of exploiting Gasol's size advantage. "We've got to get big fella the ball and just play," said forward Zach Randolph, who scored 17 points – his second-highest point total since returning from a knee injury in mid-March.

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS: Forward Caron Butler made a surprise return to the lineup after he was expected to be out four to six weeks with a broken hand suffered in the series opener. While his teammates said Butler provided an emotional lift, guard Randy Foye offered a more tangible asset by banging home four 3-pointers and scoring 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting. He nailed the biggest shot of the game with a trey that tied it at 80-80. "Randy has ice in his veins," teammate Eric Bledsoe said. It helped make up for the ice-cold touch of Bledsoe and his teammates, who had a nightmarish performance at the free throw line, including 3 of 9 in the fourth quarter.

                      TRENDS:
                      - Los Angeles is 1-5-1 against the spread in its last seven.
                      - Memphis is 1-4 against the spread in its last five road games.
                      - The under is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings.

                      BUZZER BEATERS:

                      1. In a seven-game series, the team that prevails in Game 3 has gone on to win 82 percent of the time.

                      2. Los Angeles was 13 of 30 at the foul line. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, that's the worst free-throw percentage in postseason history with a minimum of 30 attempts

                      3. After erupting for 20 points in Game 2, Memphis sixth man O.J. Mayo committed five turnovers and scored six points on 1-for-8 shooting Saturday.
