Sunday's betting tips: Devils profitable at Prudential

    Weather to watch
A 12-mph wind will be blowing in from right when the Cubs host the Dodgers on Sunday afternoon. There’s a 20 percent chance of rain; temperatures will be in the low 70s.

    Who’s hot
NBA: Chicago is 4-1 ATS after scoring 75 or fewer points in its previous game.

NBA: Miami is 7-1 ATS in its last eight playoff games as a favorite of 5.0-10.5 points.

NHL: The Devils are 7-1 in their last eight home games.

MLB: Baltimore is 7-1 in Tommy Hunter’s last eight starts.

MLB: The Angels are 5-0 in Jerome Williams’ last five home starts, and 7-2 in his last nine starts on grass.

    Who’s not
NBA: The favorite is 1-6 ATS in the last seven Hawks-Celtics games.

NBA: The over is 6-21 in the last 27 Lakers-Nuggets games.

NHL: St. Louis is 2-8 in its last 10 games as a road underdog.

MLB: Minnesota is 0-6 in Nick Blackburn’s last six starts.

MLB: Houston is 1-10 in its last 11 games facing St. Louis starter Adam Wainwright.

    Key stat
19-1 – That’s the Celtics’ record when point guard Rajon Rondo records a triple-double. In Boston’s overtime win in Game 3, Rondo became the first player in NBA history with at least 17 points, 14 rebounds, 12 assists and four steals in a playoff game, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Since the start of the 2008-09 season, Rondo has posted an NBA-high 20 triple-doubles, one more than LeBron James. Rondo’s seven career playoff triple-doubles are tied with James for second-most among active players; Jason Kidd leads that category with 11.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked
Padres closer Huston Street strained his right shoulder while pitching in the 10th inning of Friday’s 9-8 loss to the Marlins. It is unclear how long the injury will sideline Street, who has four saves and a 0.93 ERA. He went for an MRI on Saturday. In the meantime, Andrew Cashner will move into the closer’s role.

    Games of the day
Philadelphia Flyers at New Jersey Devils (-110, 5.5)

Los Angeles Lakers at Denver Nuggets (-2, 201)

    Notable quotable
"The thing is, injury is part of the game. You have to have a mental toughness to get past all of that. We've had injuries all year and you just deal with it. If you look, you can find something every night, every game. Shorthanded, regular season, back to back, early start, whatever it is, or you can find a way to win. That's what you need. You need guys that have great will to win, and no matter what the circumstances are will find a way to win." – Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau, whose depleted team trails 2-1 in the series to Philadelphia.

    Notes and tips
Coyotes defenseman Rostislav Klesla faces a disciplinary hearing Sunday for boarding Predators winger Matt Halischuk during the first period of Game 4 on Friday night. Replays showed Klesla grabbing Halischuk’s jersey before shoving him into the boards. "I looked at it and it was a really dangerous hit in my eyes," Nashville coach Barry Trotz said. "How the referees or the league will view it, I can't really speak on that, but from my eyes and knowing from playing defense, drilling him when you do that whiplash effect of pulling the shirt and then driving him, it was really fortunate that Halischuk did sort of spin at the last moment." Klesla drew a two-minute penalty for boarding. Halischuk left the game but returned. With a 3-1 lead in the series, Phoenix can close it out at home on Monday.

Flyers center Sean Couturier could return to the lineup for Sunday's Game 4 in New Jersey. He injured his leg in the first period of Philly’s 4-3 OT loss on Thursday night. Analysts said the absence of Couturier, who anchors the checking line, enabled Devils winger Ilya Kovalchuk to get loose for a goal and two assists.

Cubs right-hander Matt Garza (2-1, 2.67 ERA) won’t start Sunday against the Dodgers because of the flu. Garza and infielder Jeff Baker were the latest to come down with the virus that has spread through the team’s clubhouse. Travis Wood was called up to make the spot start in Garza's place.

      Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Guy named Peter Schwartz is CEO of Energy Project; he recently turned 60; this is some of the advice he offered for the occasion........I saw this on Harvard Business Review, no, not something I usually read.

-- Take time out each day to notice what's going right, and to feel grateful for what you've got. It's probably a lot.

-- The ultimate challenge is to accept ourselves exactly as we are, but never stop trying to learn and grow.

-- Do the most important thing first in the morning and you'll never have an unproductive day.

-- Do the right thing because it's the right thing to do, and don't expect anything in return.

-- It's possible to be excellent at anything, but nothing valuable comes easy and discomfort is part of growth.

-- Savor every moment — even the difficult ones. It all goes so fast.

      ***********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday..........

      13) Oklahoma City was impressive sweeping out the defending champion Mavericks from the playoffs; James Harden gave them 29 points off the bench. Thunder was +16 with him on the floor, -10 if he was on bench.

      12) Rough day for the home teams in NBA, with three of four losing, with only the Clippers winning by a point, despite going 13-30 from foul line.

      11) Gritty Caron Butler played 22 minutes for LA with a broken left hand; hard to underestimate what that means to a team. Tough guy.

      10) Astros have quietly won five games in row and are now 13-14, a much improved team; a lot like the Dodgers, having ownership issues over with has allowed them to focus on field. They've got some good young players.

      9) Red Sox are now 8-19 in their last 27 home games; they're 11-15 overall and in last place in AL East. Its still early, but its not that early.

      8) Hard to believe, but Angels are combined 1-11 when Ervin Santana or Dan Haren starts; Halos were shut out in each of Santana's last five starts, the first time in baseball history thats happened. Yikes.

      7) Mets' 1B Ike Davis hitting .283 (13-46) on the road, but 3-47 (.064) at Citi Field. Not good when you're 3-47 anywhere, much less at home.

      6) Mets' pitcher RA Dickey wrote a book this winter; its currently #31 on the New York Times' Best-Seller list. Good for him.

      5) Marlins are 5-0 on their west coast swing, with four one-run wins. They still aren't hitting well with men on base, but the pitching has been better. Giancarlo Stanton has five homers in his last eight games.

      4) Marquette picked up a very helpful transfer with news Trent Lockett is coming to Milwaukee this fall; the Arizona State transfer will be eligible for this coming season. He'll help Buzz Williams' team.

      3) Rory McIlroy had a 380-yard drive yesterday; CBS guys said it was the longest drive they've ever seen at Quail Hollow. Kid is 23.

      2) Heard this weekend that Jimmer Fredette is writing a book with Yahoo! Sports' Pat Forde; why? The kid isn't even 25; why write a book? Seems like they could wait until his NBA career was over to have enough material for a decent book. The whole story hasn't played out yet.

      1) As if their offseason hasn't been bad enough, keep in mind that the Saints haven't signed Drew Brees yet; could you imagine the carnage if they didn't sign him? No coach, no GM, no QB???? That would be dismal.

What bettors need to know: Sunday's NHL playoff action
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Blues at Los Angeles Kings (-135, 4.5)
        Los Angeles leads series 3-0

The talent was always there in Los Angeles. But perhaps it just needed time to mesh, a new voice in Darryl Sutter, and a postseason stage for it to all come together. Whatever explanation you want to throw out there, something’s working. The Kings are 7-1 in the playoffs so far and seeking more.

        St. Louis searching for answers
Ken Hitchcock did a wonderful job turning around the Blues and he will likely win the Jack Adams Award for his efforts. But he’s been outcoached in this series by Sutter and his line combinations just aren’t working.

Above all else, though, St. Louis trails this series because of its depth -- or lack thereof. The Blues came at opponents in waves during the regular season and seemed to have a perfect blend of youth and experience.

But it’s all gone away against the Kings. For the playoffs overall, forward Andy McDonald has been great with five goals and 10 points. No one else has more than three goals.

        Waiting on Carter
There’s no reason to be concerned when you're winning at this kind of rate, but surely the Kings are expecting more out of forward Jeff Carter, traded to Los Angeles at the deadline from Columbus. But perhaps it's shouldn't be too surprising.

Carter has one goal and four points in eight postseason games, but he's still firing away. He's third on the team with 23 shots and he's at his best when his team has a lead, so a turnaround might be in store.

But it's not like this is foreign territory for him. In Philadelphia's 2010 run to the Stanley Cup Finals, Carter snared a lot of the credit for leading the forwards and doing the little things. His numbers weren't great then, either. Consider that the Flyers went all the way to a Game 6 against Chicago before succumbing and Carter had just seven points in the playoff run overall, posting a minus-5.

        Jumpin’ Jonathan
Perhaps it's a testament to just how even the West really is, but that should not take away from anything Los Angeles goalie Jonathan Quick has accomplished.

The Kings are not your typical No. 8 seed; they are more of an upper-tier club that simply struggled during the regular season. But defeating the Presidents' Trophy winner, Vancouver, as easily as he did, and then to follow it up with a 3-0 edge on the No. 2-seeded Blues? Fairly impressive.

Quick has allowed 13 goals in eight games and has one shutout. His defense has played well in front of him and Sutter keeps his lines fresh. The surging Kings spend a lot of time on the other end of the ice, which also helps. But that doesn't change the fact that he has a 1.62 GAA and a .950 save percentage against the two best teams in the Western Conference this season.

        History
St. Louis has won five of its last six games on Sundays and seven of its last nine when returning after two days’ rest. Los Angeles has won four straight and four consecutive on Sundays, as well. Two of three games in this series have gone over.

Philadelphia Flyers at New Jersey Devils (-115, 5.5)
        New Jersey leads series 2-1

Flyers coach Peter Laviolette gets a lot of credit for his motivational tactics and getting the most out of his clubs at all times. That was illustrated in HBO’s “24/7” reality series leading up to this year’s Winter Classic.

Well, he’s not getting the most out of this team in this series and we’ll truly see what he’s made of, as Philadelphia tries to avoid the dreaded 3-1 hole.

        Carried by Kovalchuk
Devils forward Ilya Kovalchuk simply wasn’t himself in Game 1. He didn’t have a shot on net and was a minus-2, as the Devils lost 4-3 in overtime. Clearly, something was off and it turned out to be his back. He walked around the locker room last Sunday with a pad on his back after the loss and then took Game 2 off.

New Jersey responded without its regular-season leading scorer, posting a 4-1 win in that contest, and setting up his return in Game 3. And it was worth it.

Kovalchuk had a goal and three points, including a pretty, 50-foot pass for an assist to Alexei Ponikarovsky on the overtime goal that delivered the 4-3 win. He was all over the ice and finished as a plus-2 on 31 shifts.

Much has been made of Kovalchuk and his lack of a resume at this time of year and that’s all true. But he’s building that playoff bio, step by step, and the Devils are ahead in this series as a result.

        More heart from Hartnell
This was bound to happen at some point, especially because things were going so well for Flyers forward Scott Hartnell. The veteran posted 37 goals in the regular season, after never having more than 30 in any one of his 11 years in the league.

But Hartnell has come back to earth a bit in the postseason. He has just two goals and seven points in the playoffs, and is a minus-4 in this round. On Friday, when speaking with the Philadelphia media, Hartnell said the Flyers were being “outhustled,” which is surprisingly true. Surprising because he leads a gritty group of forwards who rarely are outworked for pucks in the corners, and that is happening routinely in this series.

Hartnell did have three shots on net in Game 3, so perhaps he’s about to break out. Keep that in mind tonight.

        The big four-O
New Jersey goaltender Martin Brodeur made his NHL debut in 1992, the same year some NHL players were born. New Jersey defenseman Adam Larsson, 19, is one of them. But age doesn’t bother him and that’s a good thing, because Sunday is Brodeur’s birthday and it’s a big one at that: 40.

It’s been a long and stellar career for Brodeur, proud owner of three Stanley Cup championships. And though he’s lost a step and gives up more soft goals than he used to, the fact of the matter is this: He’s won four of his last five playoff games, including three in overtime, and he’s feeding off the emotion and energy of the younger troops in front of him.

Brodeur, many times this season, has made mention of how much fun he has playing with Kovalchuk and the likes of forwards Zach Parise and Travis Zajac. At this point, with his insinuations, it’s likely Brodeur will even return next season.

For now, he’s after the Flyers for the fifth time in his postseason career. He’s 6-3 so far in the playoffs this season, with a 2.16 GAA and one shutout.

        History
The Devils have won three consecutive postseason home games, including two in overtime, and have won seven of their last eight at the Prudential Center. The Flyers have lost consecutive playoff road games, but have won five straight on Sundays. The over is 2-1 this series.

          Armadillo's Write-Up

          Sunday, May 6

Bulls @ 76ers (2-1)-- Can't lose player like Rose and not feel it; now Noah is likely to miss this game, huge blow for Chicago team that led Game 2 by 8 at half, but got blitzed 36-14 in 3rd quarter, then led last game 60-51 in 4th quarter, and lost that game too. Bulls have now lost four of last five games in this gym. Holiday seems to enjoy playing a lot more with Rose out of action-- he had 17 points in Game 3 brickfest, where both teams shot less than 38%, with 76ers outscoring Bulls 26-14 on foul line.

Heat (3-0) @ Knicks-- Knicks are 0-6 vs Miami this season, losing by 10-8-14-33-10-17 points- they're 2-13 overall in last 15 series games, losing five of last six played here, with six points closest of four losses. New York led Game 3 by 4 at half, but got crushed 51-30 in second half, as reality set in-- when Novak plays 43 minutes in last two games and only takes five shots, what else does he do? Seven of last eight series games stayed under total. Miami gets some time off with a win here.

Celtics @ Hawks-- Boston PG Rondo had triple/double Friday after he had been suspended for Game 2; Celtics had 22-12 edge from foul line. Hawks are 4-5 in last nine visits here, losing in OT in both visits to this gym this season. Celtics are 7-38 outside arc in three games. Johnson is just 21-60 from the floor in series; hard for Hawks to advance when its older subs, McGrady (41 minutes), Dampier (22) played lot more than they're used to Friday. Atlanta shot under 38% last couple games.

Nuggets @ Lakers-- Denver raced out to 35-14 lead in Game 3, held off Lakers, now try to even series- they're 2-5 against the Lakers this year, but 7-4 in last 11 series games played here; LA is just 14-57 from arc in series. Nuggets' bench outscored LA's 39-9 in Game 3; McGee had 16 points, 15 boards and was +30 in 28:00 on floor (they were -15 when he was off floor). Weird thing about this series is road team took more foul shots in all three games. Denver had only six turnovers Friday.

What bettors need to know: Sunday's NBA playoff action
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          Chicago Bulls at Philadelphia 76ers (-2.5, 174)

          Philadelphia leads series 2-1

THE STORY: It is quickly becoming clear that the Chicago Bulls may not have enough offense to advance in the playoffs without Derrick Rose. The Bulls fell apart in the fourth quarter on Friday, getting outscored 28-14 in the period en route to a 79-74 loss. The Philadelphia 76ers are taking advantage of Rose’s absence by turning to their backcourt for offense. Jrue Holiday and Evan Turner have keyed the offense as the 76ers have taken back-to-back games.

          TV: 1 p.m. ET, ABC

ABOUT THE BULLS: No. 1 seed Chicago dominated Game 1 behind Rose but has been an entirely different team the past two games as their star sits with a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Fellow All-Star Luol Deng has failed to step up in Rose’s place, totaling 15 points on 5-of-19 shooting over the last two games. The Bulls went 2 for 18 from the floor and missed all four of their free throw attempts in the final 9:33 on Friday, squandering a 14-point lead. Making matters worse, Joakim Noah went down with a sprained left ankle in the third quarter. He returned to the fourth but was noticeably hobbled. Noah left the arena on crutches, with his ankle in an air cast, and his status for Sunday‘s Game 4 is uncertain.

ABOUT THE 76ERS: Philadelphia is firmly in control of the series at this point, ready to grab a commanding 3-1 lead at home on Sunday. Holiday and Turner have been the key the last two games, averaging a combined 39 points. Spencer Hawes stepped up with 21 points and nine rebounds in Game 3 and Lou Williams has picked up his pace off the bench in the two wins. Coach Doug Collins made a switch to his lineup after Game 1, inserting Hawes and Turner into the starting five. Those moves, combined with an injury-weakened opponent, have sparked the 76ers on offense.

          TRENDS:

          * Favorite is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
          * Over is 7-2-1 in the last 10 meetings in Philadelphia.
          * Over is 14-5-1 in the last 20 meetings.

          BUZZER BEATERS:

          1. The 74 points on Friday were the fewest ever allowed by Philadelphia in the postseason.

          2. The Bulls went 6 for 24 from the field in the fourth quarter of Game 3.

          3. 76ers F Andre Iguodala has played through an Achilles injury in the series and slumped to five points on 2-of-9 shooting Friday.

Miami Heat at New York Knicks (+8, 183)

          Miami leads the series 3-0

THE STORY: The Miami Heat are within a game of advancing to the Eastern Conference semifinals. The Heat have dominated the first three games against the New York Knicks, setting the tone on the defensive end and getting out in transition with ease. The Knicks are dealing with a pair of major injuries to their starting five and Carmelo Anthony has struggled to find a rhythm offensively under relentless pressure. The Heat will go for the sweep Sunday at Madison Square Garden.

          TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC

ABOUT THE HEAT: Miami took a while to get going Thursday but LeBron James put the team on his back in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Knicks by himself in the period en route to an 87-70 triumph. James, who got a rude reception from the Madison Square Garden crowd, finished with 32 points and eight rebounds. Dwyane Wade is averaging 21.3 points in the series and Miami has had supporting players step up in each of the three contests. Mike Miller and Shane Battier were strong in the first two games and Mario Chalmers took over in Game 3, burying five 3-pointers to stretch the floor for James and Wade.

ABOUT THE KNICKS: Amar'e Stoudemire (hand) is doubtful for Friday and Jeremy Lin (knee) is still not ready to return, leaving Anthony and J.R. Smith as the main scoring threats for New York. The Knicks used the home crowd to gather some momentum in Game 3, carrying a lead into the half, but could not withstand the defensive pressure in the second half and crumbled down the stretch. Anthony scored 22 points but shot just 7 for 23 from the field in Game 3. He is shooting 34.3 percent (22 for 64) in the series. Only three players reached double figures in the Game 3 loss and New York has been beaten by an average of 20 points in the series.

          TRENDS:

          * Heat are 5-0 ATS in the last five meetings.
          * Under is 4-0 in the last four meetings in New York.
          * Favorite is 5-0 ATS in the last five meetings.
          * Under is 8-1-1 in the last 10 meetings.
          * Heat are 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings in New York.

          BUZZER BEATERS:

          1. The Knicks have lost 13 straight postseason games, breaking the NBA record for playoff futility.

          2. New York C Tyson Chandler was given the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award prior to Game 3. James finished fourth in the balloting.

          3. The Heat were a combined plus-32 on Thursday when James, Wade and Bosh were on the court together.

Atlanta Hawks at Boston Celtics (-5.5, 172)

          Boston leads series 2-1

THE STORY: Rajon Rondo made his presence felt in his return from suspension and seeks another memorable performance when the Boston Celtics host the Atlanta Hawks in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference series on Sunday. Rondo etched his seventh career playoff triple-double to fuel a 90-84 overtime victory on Friday as the Celtics took a 2-1 lead. Atlanta forward Josh Smith remains questionable with a knee injury after missing Game 3. Boston has won the last two games.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, TNT, Sport South (Atlanta), Comcast SportsNet New England (Boston)

ABOUT THE HAWKS: Atlanta was so shorthanded in the frontcourt in Game 3 that Tracy McGrady spent most of his season-high 41 minutes playing power forward and center Erick Dampier racked up more than 22 minutes after playing less than 10 minutes total over the final five-plus weeks of the season. Joe Johnson (29 points) and Jeff Teague (23) did their best to rally the Hawks in the fourth quarter, but Boston was stronger in the overtime. “There were a few possessions it seemed no one could score,” Johnson said. “We definitely felt like we let one get away. We felt like this was our chance to get one.”

ABOUT THE CELTICS: Rondo had 17 points, 14 rebounds, 12 assists and four steals in a terrific performance. Rondo has 20 career triple-doubles and Boston has a 19-1 record in those contests. Jason Kidd (11) is the only active player with more career playoff triple-doubles. Rondo also scored Boston’s first four points of overtime in his return from a one-game suspension for bumping official Marc Davis. “I felt good about all the shots I took,” Rondo said. “My teammates told me to stay aggressive.” Paul Pierce hit all 14 of his free-throw attempts and scored 21 points and Kevin Garnett had 20 points and 13 rebounds.

          TRENDS:

          * Hawks are 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings in Boston.
          * Over is 5-2 in the last seven meetings in Boston.
          * Under is 5-2 in the last seven meetings.
          * Road team is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings.
          * Underdog is 6-1 ATS in the last seven meetings.

          BUZZER BEATERS:

          1. Pierce will play in his 109th playoff game Sunday, tying Bob Cousy and Dennis Johnson for 10th on Boston’s all-time list.

          2. McGrady scored 10 of his 12 points in Game 3 in the second quarter before tweaking an ankle and later returning.

          3. Boston guard Ray Allen (ankle) had 13 points in his first outing since April 10.

Los Angeles Lakers at Denver Nuggets (-2, 201)

          Los Angeles leads series 2-1

THE STORY: The Denver Nuggets have guaranteed themselves a return trip to Los Angeles, but making the flight may not be futile unless they can take down the visiting Lakers for a second straight time when the teams meet in Game 4 of their Western Conference playoff series on Sunday. After losing twice in Los Angeles, the Nuggets cut the series deficit to 2-1 with an impressive 99-84 victory Friday night, blitzing the Lakers early and standing tall late to fend off a comeback.

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, ALT

ABOUT THE LAKERS: A pair of unsettling themes plagued Los Angeles in Game 3. Superstar guard Kobe Bryant continued to shoot like he's playing in a wind tunnel at the Pepsi Center. Bryant was a mere 7 of 23 from the floor, following up two regular-season games in Denver in which he shot a combined 13 of 51. That equals a wretched 27 percent in three games in the Mile High City. Meanwhile, center Andrew Bynum pulled a perplexing disappearing act in the first half, failing to score as the undersized Nuggets built an early 24-point lead. Bynum did finish with a double-double (18 points, 12 rebounds), but the first-half no-show was a pivotal factor.

ABOUT THE NUGGETS: While point guard Ty Lawson scored 25 points and was the catalyst for Denver's spectacular start that including a 28-2 blitz spanning the first and second quarters, Denver received massive contributions from rookie forward Kenneth Faried and backup center JaVale McGee in Game 3. The 6-foot-8 Faried, known as the "Manimal," went toe-to-toe with Los Angeles’ twin towers Bynum and Pau Gasol and emerged with 12 points and 15 rebounds. McGee, who was acquired from the Washington Wizards at the trade deadline for veteran center Nene, also had a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds to go with four blocked shots to help Denver to a 54-44 edge on the backboards.

          TRENDS:

          * Nuggets are 10-4-1 ATS in their 15 playoff games as favorites.
          * Under is 4-0 in the last four meetings in Denver.
          * Lakers are 0-5 ATS in their last four playoff games as underdogs.
          * Under is 10-3 in Denver's last 13 games as a favorite.

          BUZZER BEATERS:

          1. McGee has three double-doubles since he was acquired by Denver and two have come against the Lakers.

          2. Los Angeles received only nine points from its bench compared to 39 for the Nuggets.

          3. Nuggets F Al Harrington suffered a fractured nose when he was elbowed by Bynum. He said he plans to play in Game 4 but may be forced to wear a mask.

NBA Playoff Sunday: Who will and won't play
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's a star-studded Sunday of NBA playoffs, but how many stars will actually suit up?

The injury bug is really taking its toll, and we're not even through the first round. Here's the latest injury info on key players:

Joakim Noah, Chicago Bulls: The Bulls' center has a severely sprained left ankle. He is not expected to play Sunday in Game 4, or even make it back during the series. Noah left Saturday's film session on crutches and did not speak to reporters.

Josh Smith, Atlanta Hawks: Atlanta's versatile big man, who missed Game 3 with a knee injury, said he plans to play Sunday "[unless] I fall down the escalator and re-injure something." Smith did not practice Saturday but is fully expected to start over Marvin Williams.

Amare Stoudemire, New York Knicks: The frustrated forward practiced Saturday and is listed as both doubtful and a game-time decision, barring any further bouts with fire extinguisher cases. "He looked pretty good out here on the floor," Knicks coach Mike Woodson said. "But again, it's not my decision. It's going to be the doctor's and his decision." Stoudemire would have to play with a large bandage on his hand, if he did try it.

Al Harrington, Denver Nuggets: Andrew Bynum's elbow broke Harrington's nose in Game 3 on Friday, but the Nuggets forward, who averaged 14.2 points in the regular season, expects to play Sunday. "I think I’m going to have to wear a mask," he said. "If it’s real uncomfortable, I’ll probably just play without it. We’ll see."

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                  Sunday's streaking and slumping starters
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  STREAKING

                  Yu Darvish, Texas Rangers

                  4-0, 2.18 ERA

The 25-year-old Japanese sensation has fanned 19 batters in his last two starts covering 15 1/3 innings. He’s allowed one or zero runs in his last four starts. In fact, since a bad first inning in his major league debut, Darvish has allowed four runs over 32 innings. He gets the Indians in Cleveland on Sunday.

                  Brandon Beachy, Atlanta Braves
                  2-1, 1.38 ERA

Batters are hitting .193 against the 25-year-old right-hander, who has a fine strikeout-to-walk ratio of 22:7. He’s allowed two or fewer runs in all five of his starts entering Sunday’s visit to Coors Field. However, current Rockies are 7-for-15 against him with two homers and five RBIs.

                  SLUMPING

                  Phil Hughes, New York Yankees

                  1-4, 7.48 ERA

Hughes has served up seven homers in five starts, and the league is hitting .298 against him. He’s lasted five innings in only two starts. Still, Hughes is expected to keep getting the ball, at least until Andy Pettitte returns. He faces the Royals in K.C. on Sunday.

                  Hector Noesi, Seattle Mariners
                  1-3, 7.83 ERA

Like Hughes, Noesi can’t keep the ball in the park, allowing five homers in five starts. He barely has more strikeouts (13) than walks (10). While he pitched decently his last time out, giving up three runs in 5 2/3 innings vs. the Rays, Noesi must put it together soon or else he’ll be knocked out of the rotation. He gets the Twins at home Sunday.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MLB Top 4: Best runline bets in baseball
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When a team like the Baltimore Orioles jumps out to a 17-9 record to begin the season, baseball bettors are anxiously waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Maybe the O’s are this year’s miracle team and the 11.94 units they’ve earned for moneyline bettors so far is just a taste of the vast riches to come in 2012.

Or maybe, the rest of the American League gets smart to their staff – which boasts the second-lowest team ERA (2.79) - the second and third time through. And maybe, the big bats, which have hit 35 home runs (third most in the bigs), suddenly shrink as the season wears on.

The nearly 12 moneyline units won by Baltimore are impressive, but the 14.37 units it’s earned on the runline are even sweeter (19-7 vs. the runline). And while the Orioles may start coming up on the short end of the scoreboard, they could maintain their value with baseball’s version of the spread.

Here are three other clubs that are paying out on the runline while leaving moneyline bettors a bit shortchanged:

St. Louis Cardinals (10.46 runline units/3.89 moneyline units)

The Cardinals' offense wasn’t supposed to be better with Albert Pujols soaking up the sun in California. But the defending World Series champs are tops in the majors in offense, averaging 5.46 runs per game and hitting a collective .286. Carlos Beltran, who was brought in to soften the loss to Pujols, has seven home runs. Pujols has none. Oddsmakers undervalued St. Louis’ remaining parts, giving it terrific value on the runline.

There have been some weirdo facts and figures during this red-hot runline rip. The Cardinals, who have played only six one-run games – fewest in the National League Central – are just 1-5 in those nailbiters. And, outside of a single-game opener with Miami, St. Louis hasn’t ventured outside its division through the first month of the season. It takes its first steps beyond the NL Central in Arizona Monday.

Houston Astros (8.03 runline units/1.76 moneyline units)

The Astros and Cardinals are facing each other this weekend, posing a tough task for runline bettors. Houston’s 12-14 record is much better than most expected, and its 18-8 runline record is simply shocking.

The Astros are leaning heavily on their offense right now, scoring 4.73 runs a night while watching their team ERA slowly swell, sitting at 3.89 heading into Saturday. The biggest difference maker for Houston’s runline backers has been the bullpen, which has kept the team close in the late innings. The Astros' relievers ranked eighth in baseball as a group, boasting a 2.97 collective ERA.

Chicago White Sox (7.55 runline units/-2.46 moneyline units)

The White Sox were locked atop the American League Central before losing back-to-back games to Cleveland and dropping the series opener with Detroit Friday. Chicago’s 12-14 record isn’t too far off its 15-11 runline record, but the difference in profits speak for itself.

Friday night’s ninth-inning collapse to the Tigers stung moneyline backers like a swarm of killer bees, while the runline fans suffered only minor swelling – in their wallets – after Detroit won 5-4 but failed to cover the 1.5-run spread. Chicago has just two wins in the last eight games but has managed to salvage a 5-5 mark versus the runline.

                    Other notable runline winners:

Arizona Diamondback (7.55 runline units/1.49 moneyline units)
Toronto Blue Jays (7.49 runline units/2.81 moneyline units)

Sunday Night Baseball: Phillies at Nationals
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philadelphia Phillies at Washington Nationals (-115, 6)

Led by what has been easily the best pitching staff in baseball thus far, Washington has given itself an early lead in what was expected to be a tight National League East race. The Nationals have put defending division champ Philadelphia in an early hole, winning the first two games of this weekend’s series to leave the Phillies 5 1/2 games back in fourth place.

Washington still has one of the more sluggish lineups in the league, but it upgraded its pitching rotation in the offseason by acquiring Gio Gonzalez — who pitched seven solid innings for the win Saturday — and Edwin Jackson. The Phillies, who already boast one of the best pitching staffs in the game, have struggled almost as badly as the Nationals on offense, scoring one run or fewer nine times this season.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, ESPN (national)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies LH Cole Hamels (3-1, ERA 2.78) vs. Nationals RH Jordan Zimmermann (1-2, ERA 1.89)

Hamels was a hard-luck loser in his first outing of the year, but he has been solid ever since, turning in four straight quality starts, all of which Philadelphia won. The left-hander has shown excellent control, walking just five while striking out 36 in 32 1/3 innings. Hamels is 10-4 with a 2.71 ERA in 20 career starts against the Nationals.

Zimmermann hasn’t gotten much run support this season, earning just one win despite yielding one earned run in each of his first four starts. He faltered somewhat in his last trip to the mound, a May 1 loss to Arizona (6 1/3 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 6 K). Zimmermann will be looking for his first win against the Phillies, having gone 0-2 with a 6.60 ERA in three prior starts.

                      TRENDS:

                      * Phillies are 4-0 in Hamels' last four road starts vs. Nationals.
                      * Phillies are 9-1 in Hamels' last 10 starts vs. Nationals.
                      * Over is 25-8-1 in the last 34 meetings in Washington.
                      * Under is 10-4 in Hamels' last 14 starts vs. Nationals.
                      * Phillies are 1-6 in the last seven meetings in Washington.
                      * Phillies are 0-7 in the last seven meetings.

                      UMP TRENDS - Sam Holbrook

                      * Over is 20-8-1 in Holbrooks last 29 Sunday games behind home plate.
                      * Over is 5-2-1 in Holbrooks last eight games behind home plate vs. Philadelphia.
                      * Over is 45-22-5 in Holbrooks last 72 games behind home plate.

                      WALK-OFFS

                      1. The Nationals have allowed just nine homers, eight fewer than any other team in the majors.

                      2. Hamels has 136 strikeouts in 129 1/3 career innings against Washington. Excluding injured 3B Ryan Zimmerman, current Nationals are 23-for-111 (.207) against him.

                      3. Though the Phillies owned baseball’s best record (102-60) last season, the Nationals have been the better team lately, winning 32 of their last 45 compared with Philadelphia’s 19-26 mark over the same number of games.
