Friday's betting tips: Hawks cashing in road tests

    Weather to watch
There’s a 30 percent chance of isolated thunderstorms when the Cubs host the Dodgers on Friday afternoon. A 9-mph wind will be blowing straight in from center, and temperatures will be in the high 60s.

    Who’s hot

NBA: The Hawks are 5-0 ATS in their last five road games.

NBA: The over is 7-0 in the Bulls’ last seven games on two days’ rest.

NHL: Phoenix is 5-1 in its last six road games.

MLB: Arizona is 7-1 in Wade Miley’s last eight starts.

MLB: Miami is 9-4 in Josh Johnson’s last 13 starts vs. NL West teams.

    Who’s not

NBA: The Lakers are 1-10 ATS in their last 11 games after scoring 100 or points in their previous game.

NBA: The over is 6-20 in the last 26 Lakers-Nuggets games.

NHL: The over is 0-4-2 in Nashville’s last six home games.

MLB: Toronto is 1-5 in Henderson Alvarez’s last six starts.

MLB: The Red Sox are 0-6 in Jon Lester’s last six starts vs. winning teams.

    Key stat

63% -- That’s what center Andrew Bynum is shooting from the floor in the Lakers’ playoff series with Denver. In a complete mismatch against the smaller Nuggets, Bynum has made 17 of 27 shots while blocking 12 shots and grabbing 22 rebounds in the first two games. Denver is set as a 4-point home favorite Friday.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Hawks forward Josh Smith has patellar tendinitis and is considered doubtful for Friday’s Game 3 in Boston, However, Smith is considered probable for Game 4 on Sunday. Smith got hurt on Tuesday when he banged knees with the Celtics’ Kevin Garnett. In Game 1, Smith carried Atlanta to victory with 22 points, 18 rebounds and four assists. He had 16 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and two blocks before getting hurt in Game 2.

    Game of the day

Atlanta Hawks at Boston Celtics (-8, 173.5)

    Notable quotable

"It's very hard to change it if everybody is committed like they were. It's a statement. It's a privilege to play in the NHL playoffs for the Stanley Cup." – Nashville coach Barry Trotz on whether he’ll keep the same lineup for Friday’s Game 4, after the Preds won 2-0 in Game 3. Forwards Alexander Radulov and Andrei Kostitsyn were suspended for that game for what Trotz hinted were curfew violations.

    Notes and tips

The Ravens moved from 12/1 to 15/1 to win the Super Bowl after it was learned that Defensive Player of the Year Terrell Suggs had seriously injured his Achilles. Suggs said it happened during a conditioning test, but other reports suggest he got hurt playing basketball. Baltimore is hoping the Achilles is not fully torn. Suggs will meet with a foot specialist Tuesday. Last season, Suggs had 14 sacks, seven forced fumbles and two interceptions.

Celtics guard Ray Allen (ankle) went through a full 75-minute practice session on Thursday and hopes to play Friday against Atlanta. But his status is uncertain and could come down to a game-time decision. If Allen can’t play, Mickael Pietrus will continue serving as Boston’s sixth man.

Coyotes winger Lauri Korpikoski has missed two straight games with an undisclosed injury, and it’s unclear if he’ll return for Friday’s Game 4 in Nashville. Korpikoski also missed two games earlier in the playoffs with an upper body injury. In the regular season, he put up 17 goals and 20 assists.

Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval went on the DL with a broken left hand that will keep him out four to six weeks. Conor Gillaspie was called up to replace him. Sandoval was hitting .315 with five homers and 15 RBIs, and his absence leaves a big hole in San Fran's lineup.

      Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Mariano Rivera tore his ACL shagging flies in the outfield Thursday, is out for the year. His career could very well be over.

-- Knicks got waxed 87-70 by Miami; they have to endure one more game before their season mercifully comes to an end.

-- Oklahoma City beat the Mavericks 95-79, took 3-0 lead in their series. Impressive win. Could be quiet exit for the defending champs.

-- Kings who are the #8 seed in the West, are now 7-1 in playoffs after beating St Louis 4-2; they're up 3-0 over the #2 seed Blues.

-- Devils won another OT game, now lead the Flyers 2-1 in that series.

-- Brandon Morrow blanked the Angels, has now allowed one run in 21.2 IP over his last three starts.

      ***************

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

      13) Not sure what to say about the Junior Seau situation, other than you hurt for his family, and you never know what demons lurk inside someone. This is just unspeakably sad.

      12) That said, its to the point now that every bad thing that happens to every retired football player is being blamed on concussions, as mainstream media and opportunistic lawyers jump on an anti-football bandwagon.

Just because A happened and B happened doesn’t mean A caused B. No one knows what the reasons are, but you can bet lawyers will spin it in their favor to help win their multi-million dollar cases.

      11) I’m a big believer that a lot of athletes get depressed after their playing days, simply because its difficult to replicate the thrill of what its like to be a famous performer, once you’ve stopped performing. You never feel quite as alive again. I believe that more people go thru this than care to admit it, whether they had ever been hit in the head or not.

      10) When was last time Roy Halladay started a game that ended up 15-13?

      9) If Bryce Harper is successful right away for Washington, what does it say about minor league baseball? Both he and Josh Hamilton spent very little time in the minors, for very different reasons.

      8) San Francisco Giants are paying Aaron Rowand $12M this year, even though he’s no longer playing. Must be nice to sell out the ballpark every night.

      7) There’s nothing quite as dramatic as overtime hockey in NHL playoffs; Wednesday’s Ranger-Washington game was the 18th OT game this spring, and the Flyer-Devil game the 19th.

      6) Baseball needs more exposure to the casual fan; they’re not helping themselves not letting their highlights go on YouTube, and blacking out 3am replays on ESPN of their games in home markets. Who knows how many new fans they might make if those replays are shown? Every business needs new customers; baseball is no exception.

      5) When was last time the Orioles went to the Bronx and allowed three runs in three games?

      4) Diamondbacks have used a different lineup in every game this season. Brewers used only 12 lineups in their first 25 games.

      3) Saw worst call I’ve ever seen or will see in a big league game Wednesday afternoon. Went against the Dodgers; Todd Helton came off first base to field an errant throw; his back leg was 2-3 feet off the base, yet Tim Welke called him safe. Couldn’t have been more wrong. If a 14-year kid did that in a Little League game there would be issues, much less in a big league game. MLB will have instant replay very soon, on everything but balls/strikes.

      2) Ever hear of Phil Taylor? He made $938,497 LY, just playing in darts tournaments. No wonder my ex-wife had a dartboard. Just wish it didn’t have my face over the bulls-eye.

      1) Sometimes all people need is opportunity: Kurt Warner once stocked shelves at a Hy-Vee supermarket in Iowa. Bill James was a night watchman at a Stokely baked bean factory in Kansas. Both achieved greatness. It can happen, if you’re ready when your chance arrives.

Kentucky Derby betting: Horse-by-horse preview and picks

While the Kentucky Derby is always a bit of a crapshoot, this year’s race is a mess. With 20 horses entered and a slew of closers, all of which seem to be heading into the race in top form, it should set up for a wild finish.

Only five favorites have won the Derby since Spectacular Bid in 1979, but lately the chalk has done much better. Bodemeister is the early favorite but can he go 1¼ miles?

Here are the horses in post position order:

        1. Daddy Long Legs (+3000); Jockey: Colm O’Donghue

Ran a forgettable 12th in a field of 13 in his last outing, also at Churchill Downs. Hard to recommend off that one but this colt has solid connections and could get up for a piece of the purse. Father Scat Daddy ran in the 2007 Derby but the rail is an issue.

        2. Optimizer (+5000); Jockey: Jon Court

Appears much more suited for the turf but trainer D. Wayne Lukas wants a reason to go to the Derby and this is the best he has. This horse will make some noise in the summer but not here.

        3. Take Charge Indy (+1500); Jockey: Calvin Borel

Went wire-to-wire in the Florida Derby and should be in the thick of things here. Out of A.P. Indy, this colt is extremely sharp and Borel is the master of knowing when to make his move. He’ll get a call in this one.

        4. Union Rags (+550): Jockey: Julien Leparoux

Flew home in the Florida Derby, finishing third to Take Charge Indy. Works have been solid but unspectacular, but he appears to be able to get the distance which is a mystery for many of the top contenders. He could go from Rags to riches and be a serious Triple Crown threat if he can avoid traffic problems. Leparoux is having a strong Churchill Downs meet.

        5. Dullahan (+800); Jockey Kent Desormeaux

Ran a monstrous stretch to win the Bluegrass last time out. Has fantastic closing speed but could get buried behind a wall of horses in the field of 20. That, and the fact that he seems to like synthetic surfaces better, scares me off of this one.

        6. Bodemeister (+400): Jockey: Mike Smith

Seems destined to go off the favorite but no horse has won the Derby that has not run as a 2-year-old since 1888. Still, Smith’s mount has won two of his four races by blowouts and he’s trained well. Certainly a top contender but I don’t want him in a tight race while only getting 4-1.

        7. Rousing Sermon (+5000); Jockey: Jose Lezcano

Another horse with great closing kick but he’s 0 for 3 this season on Grade II races. Would like to have seen a better effort at Santa Anita where he was well back in consecutive starts. Nevertheless, this is the type of horse to put a couple of bucks on and pray for boxcar payoffs.

        8. Creative Cause (+1200); Jockey: Joel Rosario

Has hit the board in eight starts and beat the favorite, Bodemeister, in the San Felipe. Always seem to be battling traffic problems, some of which was his doing. This one tries hard but if he’s bumped around it will hinder his chances. Trainer Mike Harrington is making first Derby start at age 71.

        9. Trinniberg (+5000); Jockey: Willie Martinez

Has won two straight but the distance should be his downfall. This one has never gone past seven furlongs. Appears to be the rabbit and nothing else.

        10. Daddy Nose Best (+1500); Jockey: Garrett Gomez

The seasoned vet of the field with 10 races (four wins) has a good closing kick. My biggest knock is that Leparoux wanted to ride Union Rags and Mike Smith went for Bodemeister. Gomez is a solid jock but this is going to take one heck of an effort weaving through traffic to get there.

        11. Alpha (+1500); Jockey: Rajiv Maragh

Has won three of six starts but Alpha never looked like he could catch Gemologist in the Wood and has had health issues. His recent work at Belmont was impressive but he’s 0 for 3 in Grade I events and I don’t think he gets there. Bernardini’s horse is a must-use in the exotics.

        12. Prospective (+3000); Jockey: Luis Contreras

Was last in the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile run at Churchill Downs last year and it is hard to see him outkicking some of these foes. Pass.

        13. Went the Day Well (+3000); Jockey: John Velazquez

Another closer that improved greatly since his maiden win two starts ago. Will add blinkers but I question his speed and he’s never seen the likes of these horses.

        14. Hansen (+1000); Jockey: Ramon Dominguez

Sure to be the star of NBC’s coverage, the Great White Hope is a beauty but has plenty of questions. The distance could be the biggest problem but he should stay clear of the traffic. My guess is he fades to second place.

        15. Gemologist (+800); Jockey: Javier Castellano

The only undefeated horse in the race, he’s won all five starts including a dominant performance in the Wood. He’s worked well and is fresh. The only knock is who he’s beaten and that’s the one I’m hanging my hat on.

        16. El Padrino (+2000): Jockey: Rafael Bejarano

Todd Pletcher trainee is sure to take some money but didn’t fire in the Florida Derby. He’s 2 for 2 on an off track but I don’t like the works and he seems to be off his game.

        17. Done Talking (+5000): Jockey: Sheldon Russell

Crushed by Hansen two starts ago, he came back to win the Illinois Derby. Yet another closer without the monstrous kick, seems better suited for regular allowance events.

        18. Sabercat (+3000): Jockey: Corey Nakatani

Asmussen trainee seems to be able to get the distance but also looks like he’d need a big-time speed duel up front to help his cause. And if that happens, I think others would be closing much better. Pass.

        19. I'll Have Another (+1200); Jockey: Mario Gutierrez

Just missed in the Santa Anita Derby but the post could hurt this speedster from making the front. Has won 3 of 5 and has a Beyer figure of over 100. I’m guessing he burns himself out getting to the front and fades in the stretch.

        20. Liaison (+5000); Jockey: Martin Garcia

Baffert trainee has not been sharp. Puts the blinkers back on but seems to be overmatched here.

        Kentucky Derby picks:

        1. Union Rags. 2. Hansen. 3. Daddy Knows Best. 4. Went The Day Well

Kentucky Derby handicapping: Good and bad trends

Over the years we’ve seen some trends hold up very well in the Kentucky Derby, while others haven’t been nearly as strong in recent years. Here’s a look at some of both kinds of Kentucky Derby handicapping trends to help you in your handicapping for Saturday’s big race:

          Fewer than six career races

This was once a rock-solid trend. Between 1933 and 2007 only three horses had won with less than six career races, and all of those horses had run five times.

It was widely believed that experience was required to develop the base of familiarity and endurance needed to win the toughest race a three year old will ever run.

That trend has come under attack recently, though.

In 2008 Big Brown won after just three previous career starts. Last year Animal Kingdom had run only four times before his big win. Those two wins in the last four years have challenged the potency of this trend, and made it much harder to trust.

This year will also provide plenty of opportunities for the trend to be roughed up — or destroyed entirely. Potential favorite Bodemeister has run only four times. Five other likely runners — Gemologist, I’ll Have Another, Daddy Long Legs, Went the Day Well, and Mark Valeski — have each run only five times.

Given the way that training horses is changing this trend will likely be nothing but a memory in the future — even if it holds up this year.

          No races as a 2-year-old

This is going to be the most publicized trend heading into this race — no horse since Apollo in 1882 has won the Kentucky Derby without having raced at least once as a 2-year-old. There have been 56 runners since 1944 that have challenged history in this way. Just twice — in 1948 and 1994 — have they come as close as second place.

A horse that hasn’t run at 2 typically hasn’t seen enough and faced enough adversity to be ready for the Derby. They also likely lack maturity — the typical cause for the delayed start to their career.

Horses can develop very well later in the year — the great Curlin was unraced at 2 and took off after his third-place Derby finish. It has effectively not yet been shown that a horse can be ready for the challenge of the first Saturday in May.

Looking to fly in the face of that convention will be Bodemeister. The stunning winner of the Arkansas Derby has a good shot at being the Kentucky Derby favorite. He’s an explosive frontrunner, and unquestionably the fastest member of this class. Can he do what so many before him have been unable to?

Fewer than three races as a 3-year-old

This is another trend that is already on shaky ground thanks to recent history. Between 1937 and 2007 we had seen just six horses with fewer than three races at 3 years old win the Derby. Again, it seemed like fewer races just didn’t give the depth of experience and fitness required to win.

The trend has dramatically reversed recently, though. Each of the last four winners — Big Brown, Mine That Bird, Super Saver, and Animal Kingdom — had only run twice at two.

This year there are a whopping nine horses that have only run twice. Those are Union Rags, Gemologist, Dullahan, I’ll Have Another, Take Charge Indy, Daddy Nose Best, Done Talking, Sabercat, and Trinniberg. Taking it a step further, Daddy Long Legs has run only once this calendar year.

          Unbeaten runners

Wood Memorial winner Gemologist, trained by Todd Pletcher, has run five times and won five times. If and when he enters the gate he will become the 23rd undefeated entrant in the Derby.

The success rate of those horses has run well above the success rate for typical entries — seven of the 22 runners have won. In the last decade the results have been even more impressive — five undefeated runners have turned into three Derby champions, including Smarty Jones, Barbaro and Big Brown.

          Layoff

Barbaro had a huge impact on how the sport was viewed by the general public and also those who cared about horse racing. He also changed the way people thought about layoffs heading into the race.

Entering his Derby in 2006, no horse since Needles in 1956 had won off a layoff of four or more weeks heading into the Kentucky Derby. It was widely believed that if a horse was off for more than three weeks he wouldn’t be ready to run on the big day.

After Barbaro proved it could be done trainers really embraced the extended rest approach. In subsequent years Big Brown, Super Saver and Animal Kingdom won off of a long rest.

This year it’s more remarkable if a horse isn’t coming off long rest than if he is — 15 of the 20 likely entrants are on at least four weeks rest, and six of the 20 haven’t run since March.

          No prep race win

You’d think that it would be a bad thing if a horse hasn’t won a stakes race as a 3-year-old before the Derby. If he can’t win a lesser race then why would you trust him in the biggest race in the world?

That logic hasn’t consistently held up, though.

Since 1980 we have seen 11 horses earn their first stakes win of the year at Churchill Downs. That means you don’t have to be scared of a horse that hasn’t won yet.

Interestingly, though, that’s not much of a factor this year. Only four likely runners — Liaison, Mark Valeski, Rousing Sermon, and Sabercat — have yet to record a victory. Optimizer and My Adonis are the two horses currently outside of the Kentucky Derby field hoping to get in, and neither has won yet this year, either.

The fact that every other horse is a winner of a graded stakes is a sign of just how deep and competitive this field is. Last year was a much weaker class of horses, and eight of those horses hadn’t crossed the line first.

Phoenix Coyotes at Nashville Predators (-157, 5)
            Phoenix leads series 2-1

THE STORY: The Nashville Predators sat two of their top offensive players for Game 3 of their second-round series with Phoenix - then went out and blanked the Coyotes at home. Fans shouldn't expect Alexander Radulov of Andrei Kostitsyn to play in Game 4, either, as the Predators look to even their best-of-seven series with the Coyotes. The two forwards were banned after violating a team rule, but the rest of the team banded together to earn a 2-0 victory and trim the series deficit to 2-1.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBCS, TSN

ABOUT THE COYOTES: Phoenix pushed nine goals past Nashville netminder Pekka Rinne in the first two games of the series, but had no answer for the Finnish star as the series shifted to Tennessee. The Coyotes had their share of chances - firing 32 shots on net - but Rinne was equal to the task. The Predators put things on ice early with two goals in a 1:06 span early in the opening period - giving them the kind of quick start Phoenix coach Dave Tippett warned his team to expect. ''We gave them that early energy, that early momentum,'' he said. Coyotes netminder Mike Smith stopped 24 shots in defeat.

ABOUT THE PREDATORS: Nashville head coach Barry Trotz made it clear prior to Game 3 that if his team prevailed, he would reward the players involved by dressing them in Game 4. That all but rules out Radulov and Kostitsyn, who were reportedly spotted out on the town in Glendale, Ariz. until 4 a.m. prior to Game 2. ''It's very hard to change it if everybody is committed like they were,'' Trotz said afterward. ''It's a statement. It's a privilege to play in the NHL playoffs for the Stanley Cup.'' Rinne's best game of the playoffs resulted in his first postseason shutout since a 3-0 win over Detroit back in April 2004.

            TRENDS:

            * Under is 10-3-2 in the last 15 meetings in Nashville.
            * Over is 3-1-1 in the last 5 meetings.
            * Coyotes are 5-12-1 in the last 18 meetings in Nashville.

            OVERTIME:

            1. After the road team had won the previous six regular-season meetings between the clubs, the home team has prevailed in each of the first three games of this series.

            2. Phoenix had scored 13 goals in its previous three games prior to Wednesday's shutout.

              Armadillo's Write-Up

              Friday, May 4

Celtics @ Hawks-- Boston PG Rondo is back after being suspended for Game 2, when his sub Bradley had one turnover in 42:00, Daniels was +11 in just 15:00 on floor in 87-80 upset win. Hawks split last eight visits here, losing by hoop in OT in only visit this season. Pierce had 36 in Game 2, after going 5-19 in Game 1 loss; Celtics are 3-25 outside arc in two games. Atlanta won six of its last eight games overall. Johnson was just 10-32 from the floor in Games 1-2. Celtics got to line 31 times in last game, after only 13 visits in opener.

76ers @ Bulls-- Can't lose player like Rose and not feel it; Chicago led Game 2 55-47 at half, but got blitzed 36-14 in 3rd quarter, now series is 1-1 heading back to Philly, where Bulls lost three of last four visits, 1-1 this season. Holiday had 26 points last game, after he was -24 in 36:00 in Game 1: Philly shot amazing 59% from floor with only 7 turnovers on Tuesday. Chicago's starting G's were just 8-21 from floor last game, as team tries to reinvent themselves on fly without Rose.

Nuggets @ Lakers-- If Bynum continues to kick Nuggets' butts inside, it is a short series; he had 27/9 last game, after blocking 10 shots with 13 rebounds in Game 1. Gallinari/Afflalo combined to shoot 9-30 in Game 2, they have to do better here, or else. Denver lost five of six against the Lakers this year, but are 6-4 in last ten series games played here; LA is just 8-32 behind arc in two games, but they they were up 17 before the Nuggets (3-10 in their last 13 playoff games) staged a mild rally.

What bettors need to know: Friday's NBA playoff action
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Hawks at Boston Celtics (-8, 173.5)

              Series tied 1-1

THE STORY: Paul Pierce was a one-man show in Game 2, Rajon Rondo returns for Game 3 and Atlanta could be without forward Josh Smith when the Boston Celtics host the Hawks on Friday. Pierce had 36 points and 14 rebounds in Boston’s 87-80 victory that tied the series on Tuesday, a contest that Rondo missed after he drew a one-game suspension for bumping official Marc Davis in Game 1. Smith strained a left knee tendon in Game 2, resulting in patellar tendinitis. He's considered doubtful for Game 3.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, Sport South (Atlanta), Comcast SportsNet New England (Boston)

ABOUT THE HAWKS (37-29-2 ATS): Not having Smith would be a huge blow for an Atlanta team that is also without frontcourt players Al Horford (pectoral) and Zaza Pachulia (foot). Smith is averaging 19 and 15 rebounds in the series and has been the Hawks’ top player over the second half of the season. “He’s certainly a key component in order for us to have success,” Atlanta coach Larry Drew said. “Obviously, we already have both centers out, and now we’re looking at our starting power forward possibly being injured. These types of situations have been happening to us all year. We’ve been kind of snakebit but we’re just hoping for the best.”

ABOUT THE CELTICS (35-31-2 ATS): Pierce bounced back from a poor Game 1 to register one of the top playoff efforts of his stellar career - an impressive feat considering he was a marked man with both Rondo and Ray Allen (guard) out of the lineup. Pierce scored just 12 points in the opener on 5-of-19 shooting. Allen is questionable to play in Game 3. Coach Doc Rivers cited his team’s experience as being a prime factor in why Boston was able to even the series while shorthanded. “We’ve won games this year without some of our key players,” Rivers said. “This is a tough-minded basketball team, and having a lot of veterans on your team helps with that.”

              TRENDS:

              * Under is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
              * Road team is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
              * Underdog is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings.

              BUZZER BEATERS:

              1. Atlanta All-Star Joe Johnson is averaging just 15.5 points in the series and his shooting has been horrid – 31.3 percent from the field, including 3 of 17 from 3-point range.

              2. The Celtics missed their first 19 3-point attempts in the series and are 3 for 25 overall.

              3. Scoring has been tough for both teams – the Hawks are averaging 81.5 points and Boston is at 80.5.

              Chicago Bulls at Philadelphia 76ers (-2, 179.5)
              Series tied 1-1

THE STORY: The Chicago Bulls did just fine without Derrick Rose for one half. Then things fell apart. The Philadelphia 76ers blitzed past the Bulls in the second half on Tuesday, running away with Game 2 and evening the series at a game apiece. The 76ers torched Chicago’s league-best defense, shooting 59 percent from the field. The series now shifts back to Philadelphia, where the 76ers lost four straight to end the regular season.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, CSCH (Chicago), CSN (Philadelphia), ESPN2

ABOUT THE BULLS (39-28-1 ATS): Chicago went 18-9 without Rose during the regular season and was confident going into Game 2. The Bulls held a 55-47 lead at the half before collapsing in the third quarter in a 109-92 loss. C.J. Watson and John Lucas III combined for 27 points and seven assists in Rose’s spot but the defense could not contain anyone. The 59 percent shooting Chicago allowed was the highest mark surrendered by the team since Tom Thibodeau took over as head coach prior to the 2010-11 season. Joakim Noah was the one highlight in Game 2, scoring 21 points on 10-of-11 shooting, but Luol Deng and Carlos Boozer both struggled on the interior as the Bulls were outscored 52-32 in the paint.

ABOUT THE 76ERS (34-33-1 ATS): Philadelphia took advantage of Rose’s absence mostly on the offensive end, where point guard Jrue Holiday had little trouble navigating Rose’s replacements en route to 26 points on 11-of-15 shooting. The 76ers put six players in double figures and got strong performances from Evan Turner and Lou Williams. Philadelphia played 10 of its final 14 regular season games on the road and started the playoffs in Chicago, so the atmosphere at the Wells Fargo Center should be a welcome change of pace. The 76ers finished 19-14 at home during the regular season despite the April stumble.

              TRENDS:

              * Over is 7-1-1 in the last nine meetings in Philadelphia.
              * Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings.

              BUZZER BEATERS:

              1. The top rebounding team in the NBA during the season, Chicago was beaten on the boards, 38-32, in Game 2.

              2. The 76ers switched their lineup in Game 2, moving Turner and Spencer Hawes into the starting five.

              3. Rose, who tore his anterior cruciate ligament in Game 1, likely won’t travel to Philadelphia for Games 3 and 4.

Los Angeles Lakers at Denver Nuggets (-4, 204)

              Los Angeles leads series 2-0

THE STORY: The Denver Nuggets are hoping a variety of factors – the home crowd and mile-high altitude chief among them – will turn the moment in their first-round playoff series against the Los Angeles Lakers. Staring at a 2-0 deficit in the best-of-seven series, Denver will need to push the pace to exploit Los Angeles' age (read: Kobe Bryant) and negate the Lakers' overwhelming size advantage. Avoiding playing catch-up would also help the Nuggets, who have never led in the series.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, ALT

ABOUT THE LAKERS (29-29 ATS): Bryant was magnificent through three quarters on his way to a 38-point performance in Game 2, giving him 69 points in the series. With Bynum dominating the inside, Los Angeles has a 1-2 punch that the Nuggets have been unable to slow down, much less stop. Coming off his triple-double in Game 1, the 7-foot Bynum followed up with a career playoff-high 27 points Tuesday night. The behemoth center has had his way against Denver, averaging a shade under 25 points and 12 rebounds in four regular-season meetings.

ABOUT THE NUGGETS (37-31 ATS): Behind point guard Ty Lawson, Denver finally got its running game untracked and managed to chop a 19-point deficit to four late in the fourth quarter. But the Nuggets also trailed by 17 early in Game 1 and cannot afford to play from behind, particularly since they were among the league’s weakest 3-point shooting teams during the regular season. Shooting guard Arron Afflalo needs to get untracked. He averaged 18.7 points in the final month of the season, but has a combined 20 points on 7-of-23 shooting in the series.

              TRENDS:

              * Under is 5-1 in the last six meetings in Denver.
              * Under is 20-6 in the last 26 meetings.

              BUZZER BEATERS:

              1. Los Angeles is 42-1 when winning the first two games of a postseason series.

              2. Denver is 0-5 all time against the Lakers in the playoffs.

              3. Bryant struggled mightily in both regular-season meetings in Denver, shooting 13 of 51 overall and 2 of 12 from behind the arc.

                        Friday, May 4

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Friday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        STREAKING

                        Stephen Strasburg, Washington Nationals

                        2-0, 1.13 ERA

Strasburg, the NL’s Pitcher of the Month for April, has allowed one or zero runs in four of his five starts. The 23-year-old fireballer ranks second in the NL in ERA and WHIP (0.88) and is tied for fifth with 34 strikeouts. Seems like the only thing that can slow down Strasburg is Washington’s cautiousness about overusing him. He gets the Phillies at home Friday.

                        Wade Miley, Arizona Diamondbacks
                        3-0, 1.29 ERA

At this rate Miley isn’t going back to the bullpen. The 25-year-old lefty, who replaced the injured Dan Hudson, has not yielded an earned run in his two starts covering 12 1/3 innings. For the season, the league is hitting .133 against Miley, who’s allowed 10 hits in 21 innings. He faces the Mets in New York on Friday.

                        SLUMPING

                        Lucas Harrell, Houston Astros

                        1-2, 4.71 ERA

The 26-year-old right-hander has given up five earned runs in each of his last two starts. Over those 11 innings, he surrendered two homers, 14 hits and four walks. This season he’s had two good starts and three terrible ones. On Friday he’ll face the potent Cardinals, who rank near the top of MLB in every offensive category.

                        Ervin Santana, Los Angeles Angels
                        0-5, 6.16 ERA

Santana made progress in his last start, not allowing a homer after serving up 10 in his previous four outings. Batters are hitting .290 against Santana, who has a WHIP of 1.50. He’ll have to be careful when he faces Toronto’s Eric Thames: the Blue Jays’ left fielder is 4-for-8 lifetime against Santana with two homers and a double.
