Wednesday's betting tips: Rays lose Longoria

    Weather to watch

Los Angeles Dodgers at Colorado Rockies – 16 mph winds are expected to blow out to center field.

    Who’s hot

NBA: San Antonio is 21-5-1 ATS in their last 27 home games.

NBA: The Denver Nuggets are 4-1 ATS in their last five games overall.

NHL: The New York Rangers are 9-3 in their last 12 games as a road underdog.

NHL: Phoenix has won 11 of its last 13.

MLB: Texas is 9-1 in Matt Harrison’s last 10 road starts.

    Who’s not

NBA: The Philadelphia 76ers are 1-4 ATS in the last five meetings in Chicago.

NBA: The Lakers are 4-11 against the spread in their last 15 games following a straight up win.

NHL: Washington has won four of its last five home games against the New York Rangers.

NHL: The over is 0-3-2 in Nashville's last five home games.

MLB: The Chicago Cubs are 2-8 in their last 10 games in Cincinnati.

    Key stat

64 – The Orlando Magic scored just 64 combined points in the second half in the opening two games of their series with Indiana. The Pacers routed Orlando 93-78 as 9.5-point favorites in Game 2 and are pegged as 3-point road favorites in Wednesday’s Game 3.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Evan Longoria, Tampa Bay Rays - A few hours after denying a report that third baseman Evan Longoria will be sidelined 6-8 weeks with a hamstring injury, the Tampa Bay Rays acknowledged Longoria will be out 4-8 weeks with a partially torn hamstring. He’s hitting .329 with four home runs, 19 RBIs and 15 walks.

    Game of the day

Los Angeles Clippers at Memphis Grizzlies (-6.5, 185)

    Notable quotable

"This has been a big distraction to our hockey team to make this announcement today so our players will be prepared for Game 3 tomorrow night. It's very disappointing. Any time something like happens it's disappointing. In the playoffs to hold out arguably two of your better players . . . it's a pretty easy decision. I always try to do the right thing in my personal life, in my business life. I put the team ahead of individual players.'' – Nashville Predators GM David Poile after suspending forwards Alexander Radulov and Andrei Kostitsyn for Game 3 after the pair reportedly missed curfew. The Preds trail the Coyotes 2-0 in the series and are set as -180 favorites Wednesday.

    Notes and tips

The rainout Monday night at Detroit for what was to be the opener of a three-game series was not as desirable, but it allowed Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost to maneuver his rotation again. The revised rotation does not include Luis Mendoza, who will likely be moving to the bullpen as the long man. The rotation lines up this way: Luke Hochevar and Jonathan Sanchez will start Tuesday and Wednesday at Detroit. Danny Duffy and Bruce Chen will start Thursday and Friday against the Yankees at the start of a seven-game homestand (four against New York, three against Boston).

New York Knicks forward Amare Stoudemire had surgery on his lacerated left hand on Tuesday, and the team said it is "doubtful" he will be available for the remaining games in the playoff series against the Miami Heat. Stoudemire punched a glass fire extinguisher case with his left hand after the team's 104-94 loss in Game 2, which put his team in an 0-2 hole in the series. He suffered lacerations, and had to be treated by paramedics at American Airlines Arena. After visiting a hand specialist, Stoudemire has surgery Tuesday to repair a small muscle in his hand. Stoudemire averaged 17.5 points during the regular season and 13.5 points in the first two playoff games.

      Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Celtics beat the Hawks in Atlanta without Rajon Rondo, as his backup Bradley played 42 minutes with only one turnover.

-- Bulls weren't as fortunate without Derrick Rose, losing 109-92 at home to the 76ers, who outscored Chicago 36-14 in the third quarter.

-- Nationals lost their fifth straight game with Ryan Zimmerman out hurt; they've scored seven runs in the five games.

-- Angels' Jerome Williams threw a 3-hit shutout at Minnesota, which is hurting with Justin Morneau injured.

-- First place Tampa Bay hosted Seattle the last two nights, but drew less than 10,000 fans both games, even with Felix Hernandez going Monday. At that rate, Rays aren't going to last much longer in the Bay Area.

-- Buck Showalter won his 1,000th game as a major league manager when his much-improved Orioles beat the Bronx Bombers 7-1.

      ********************

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.........

      13) Now that the steroids era is over in baseball, home runs are down; there are very few real fast players anymore, so not lot of running, teams are defending better, thanks to spray charts and improved scouting, so the best way to keep scoring up in baseball is to move fences in at stadiums where teams are having trouble hitting. I’m looking at you, Miami/San Diego.

      12) The casual fan perceives baseball as slow/boring/too low scoring, mostly because casual fans are part of today’s attention deficit culture that requires constant stimulation. Fences have already been moved in at Comerica in Detroit and CitiField in Flushing. I’d expect the Marlins to move fences in next year—how do you have a young star like Giancarlo Stanton and build a park where a home run is an oddity?

      11) Ryan Braun had three homers and a triple Monday night in San Diego, 15 total bases, a tremendous night, which reminds us that one of baseball’s more underrated records is Shawn Green’s 19 total bases in one game. Going to be hard to break that one.

      10) Restaurant chain PF Chang’s got sold for $1.1B, meaning Mongolian Beef will be more expensive pretty soon. Not good.

      9) Tennessee Volunteers have seven new assistant football coaches, which could be a good thing, but also signals that the ones who left weren’t overly confident of Tennessee’s chances moving ahead. None of the seven who left were fired, by the way.

      8) St John’s hooper Amir Garrett is heading to Arizona as soon as his school year is over, going to the Cincinnati Reds’ player development camp. Garrett is a 6-6 lefty pitcher. Reds gave him a million bucks, hoping he cam become a big league hurler. He doesn't have much experience.

      7) I wonder what an owner like Arte Moreno in Anaheim thinks when he’s paying Vernon Wells $25M a year and Wells just isn't very good?

      6) Orioles are off to good start, but they might be worried about Jake Arrieta; in his first three starts, he induced 27 misses on 140 opponents’ swings. In his last two starts, only six misses on 67 swings.

      5) Northern Illinois QB Chandler Harnish had a free agent deal all set with the Chargers but was drafted by the Colts with the last pick of the draft, so he goes to Indy instead of the Chargers. Think he was happy about that?

      4) Do major league teams practice sliding? I'm serious. Evan Longoria tore his hamstring sliding Monday night; does he practice sliding the right way?

      3) Astros had seven pitchers face seven consecutive batters Monday night, after they left starter Norris in too long, costing him a win. No one had ever used seven pitchers on seven consecutive batters before. Ever.

      2) SMU's athletic department lost $113M over the last seven years; thats not a misprint. Wonder how the academic side at SMU feels about that.

      1) Anaheim Angels have been shut out in Ervin Santana's last four starts-- they've been outscored 20-0 in those games. Ouch.

What bettors need to know: Wednesday's NHL playoff action
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Rangers at Washington Capitals (-115, 4.5)

        THE STORY
: The focus has shifted to ice time as the Washington Capitals prepare to host the New York Rangers in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series. With the best-of-seven shifting to DC, much of the attention is on Capitals head coach Dale Hunter's decision to reduce superstar Alex Ovechkin's playing time. Ovechkin played a career-low 13 1/2 minutes in Game 2, but scored the game winner as Washington evened the series at a game apiece.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBCS, CBC

ABOUT THE RANGERS: New York did well to battle back from a 2-0 deficit and tie the game early in the third period, but took a pair of costly penalties after evening the score - the second of which led to Ovechkin's go-ahead power-play goal. "It’s a tie game, you can’t take four minutes in penalties," Rangers head coach John Tortorella said afterward. "You’re not gonna win a hockey game like that." Veteran C Brian Boyle returned to the lineup after missing three games with a concussion, finishing with one shot on goal in just over 15 minutes of ice time.

ABOUT THE CAPITALS: While media and fans scrutinize Hunter's personnel decisions, the players say they support their coach all the way. "To be honest, it's not even something that we notice," said Capitals defenseman Karl Alzner. "We don't go down the sheet at the end of the game and say, 'How much did 'Ovi' play?' You know he wants to play more, and he's frustrated by not playing 20 minutes. But he doesn't care - he wants to win that game." Part of the reason for the diminished ice time is the play of Washington's third and fourth lines, which have performed well in the postseason.

        TRENDS:
        - Washington is 1-4 in its last five games following a win.
        - New York is 9-3 in its last 12 as a road underdog.
        - The under is 4-0-4 in New York's last eight.

        OVERTIME:

        1. The Capitals recalled goaltender Dany Sabourin, defenseman Sean Collins and forward Cody Eakin from their American Hockey League affiliate in Hershey as insurance.

        2. The Rangers have won just one of their last five visits to Washington.

Phoenix Coyotes at Nashville Predators (-180, 5)

        THE STORY
: Being down 2-0 in their best-of-seven series with the Phoenix Coyotes isn't the only thing that has the Nashville Predators concerned. Two of their top forwards have been suspended for violating team rules as the series shifts to Music City for Game 3 Wednesday night. Andrei Kostitsyn and Alexander Radulov will watch from the press box after reportedly being spotted at 4 a.m. the morning before Game 2 in Glendale, Ariz.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, CNBC, TSN

ABOUT THE COYOTES: While Nashville deals with unwanted distractions, Phoenix - a team used to addressing off-ice issues - has been all business in winning the opening two games of the series. Yet, despite the sizeable lead, head coach Dave Tippett is approaching Game 3 with caution. ''We realize that Nashville is going to come out and play probably their best game of the series in Game 3, probably out of desperation, and we have to make sure our game is where it needs to be to give us the best chance to win,'' he said.

ABOUT THE PREDATORS: Nashville general manager David Poile would not confirm why the two players were being banned, but called their actions unfortunate and selfish. ''I hope there is some remorse for what they did,'' he said. ''Time will tell with their behavior and if they get the opportunity to get back into the lineup.'' Radulov, who rejoined Nashville following a lengthy stint in the KHL, was singled out by NBC analyst Keith Jones during the Game 2 loss. Jones ripped Radulov repeatedly for appearing lazy on offense and completely disinterested on defense.

        TRENDS:
        - Nashville has won 24 of its last 32 home games.
        - The under is 3-0-2 in Phoenix's last five road games.
        - The road team is 6-2 in the last eight meetings.

        OVERTIME:

        1. Options for replacing Kostitsyn and Radulov include Matt Halischuk, Jordin Tootoo and Craig Smith. Only Smith has suited up in this series.

        2. The Coyotes have won their last three visits to Nashville, including both this season.

        3. Radulov is the Predators' leading playoff scorer with a goal and five assists in seven games. Kostitsyn has three goals and an assist.

          Wednesday, May 2

Jazz @ Spurs-- San Antonio have won last 11 games (10-0-1 vs spread) with eight of last nine going over the total. Spurs won seven of last eight games vs Utah, winning last four played here by 9-15-10-15 points, as 106-91 Game 1 win came fairly easily. Utah won five of their last six games, is 3-1-1 vs spread in its last five games as an underdog. SA subs were 6-12 behind arc, 10-26 inside it; those were only six treys Spurs made. So far in playoffs, Game 1 losers are 5-1 vs spread in Game 2.

Magic @ Pacers-- Orlando got split in Indiana; they're 9-2 in last 11 vs Indiana, winning six of last seven played here, with only one of the six wins by less than 13 points. Magic took 49 3's, 30 FTs in two games at Indiana, a bad ratio- they need some inside scoring. Pacers were down a hoop at half in Game 2, outscored Orlando 30-13 in 3rd quarter- starting guards were 13-20 in Game 2, a marked improvement. Scoring 81-78 is not going to get it done; where does Magic find more offense?

Clippers @ Grizzlies-- LA was down 27 at one point in Game 1, trailed by 24 with 7:52 left, rallied to stun Memphis in 99-98 Game 1 win, as big a comeback as ever happened in NBA playoffs. Clippers won five of last six series games, with home team winning five of last seven, three of four this season. Clippers lost Butler with broken left hand; they got 19 points from Young in 24:00 off bench. Game 1 loss snapped Grizzlies' 6-game win streak. What bettors need to know: Wednesday's NBA playoff action
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Utah Jazz at San Antonio Spurs (-11.5, 204)

          THE STORY
: The last time Gregg Popovich was named NBA Coach of the Year, the San Antonio Spurs went on to win the NBA championship. That bodes well for the Spurs, who resume their best-of-seven Western Conference quarterfinal series Wednesday night against the visiting San Antonio Spurs. Popovich was named coach of the year for a second time Tuesday after leading the Spurs to 50 regular-season victories. San Antonio earned a convincing 106-91 win over Utah in the series opener.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, TNT, Fox Sports Southwest

ABOUT THE JAZZ: Utah had no answer for the Spurs in the opener, surrendering 58 points in the paint while allowing San Antonio to shoot nearly 48 percent from the field. Franchise power forward Al Jefferson said he and his teammates remained upbeat despite the one-sided loss. "Believe it or not, we do walk out with our heads up a little bit," said Jefferson, who finished with 16 points and nine rebounds in his first taste of postseason action since his rookie 2004-05 campaign. "Now let's just go and watch film and learn from our mistake, then get ready for Game 2."

ABOUT THE SPURS: Ever humble, Popovich credited much of his success with San Antonio to the fortuitous arrivals of franchise centers David Robinson and Tim Duncan. "If you can draft David Robinson and follow that up with Tim Duncan, that's a couple of decades of very, very possible success unless you just screw it up," he said. "So it's hard to take credit when circumstances have gone your way so consistently." The aging Duncan showed signs of his old self in the series opener, erupting for 17 points and 11 rebounds. Tony Parker led the way with 28 points and eight assists

          TRENDS:
          - San Antonio is 21-5-1 against the spread in its last 27 home games.
          - The over is 2-8-1 in San Antonio's last 30.
          - Utah is 1-3-1 against the spread in its last five meetings with San Antonio.

          BUZZER BEATERS:

          1. Popovich, who last won the coach-of-the-year award in 2003, earned 77 first-place votes to easily outdistance runner-up Tom Thibodeau of the Chicago Bulls (27). Indiana's Frank Vogel (seven) finished third.

          2. San Antonio hasn't lost at home to Utah since dropping a 105-98 decision Jan. 20, 2010.

Indiana Pacers at Orlando Magic (3, 183.5)

          THE STORY
: The Orlando Magic earned a split in Indiana against the third-seeded Pacers but their Game 2 performance didn’t provide much encouragement that they can win the first-round series. The Magic were outplayed and outworked in the second half of the 93-78 loss and now Indiana can take the lead in the series with a victory in Orlando on Wednesday. The Pacers have held the sixth-seeded Magic below 40 percent from the field in both games.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBATV, Fox Sports Indiana (Indiana), Fox Sports Florida (Orlando)

ABOUT THE PACERS: Starting guards George Hill (18 points) and Paul George (17) combined to make 13 of 20 shots in Game 2 while thoroughly outplaying Orlando’s backcourt. Forwards David West and Danny Granger scored 18 points apiece but Granger had his second consecutive poor shooting game – he’s connecting at a 34.1-percent clip in the series. The Pacers outscored Orlando by 17 points in the second half when they had a 26-13 rebounding edge. “This time of year, games are a lot harder,” Granger said. “Everybody’s playing twice as hard. You have to be the team with the most resolve, the team just playing with the most attitude to try to get the win.”

ABOUT THE MAGIC: Orlando is averaging just 79.5 points in the series with a high game of 81. The loss of center Dwight Howard for the series has thrust Glen Davis into a leading role and that has produced mixed results. Davis is averaging 17 points and 11.5 rebounds but is shooting just 36.1 percent and disappeared in the second half of Game 2. Forward Ryan Anderson has experienced back-to-back poor games, averaging just eight points after making the most 3-pointers (166) in the league in the regular season. “We’re going to have to be better offensively,” Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. “I’m going to have to find something that works.”

          TRENDS:
          - The over is 4-0 in Orlando's last four home games.
          - Indiana has covered in four of its last five road games.
          - Indiana is 2-6 against the number in the last eight meetings between the two teams.

          BUZZER BEATERS:

          1. Orlando scored just 64 second-half points in the two games at Indiana.

          2. The Pacers shot 89.3 percent (25 for 28) from the free-throw line in Game 2 after hitting just 13 of 22 attempts in the opener.

          3. Magic guard Jason Richardson had 17 points and five 3-pointers in the opener, but scored just two points in Game 2 while dealing with an early-game injury to his left thumb.

Los Angeles Clippers at Memphis Grizzlies (-6.5, 185)

          THE STORY
: Having lost home-court advantage, the Memphis Grizzlies will try to regain their wits after blowing a huge lead in the series opener against the Los Angeles Clippers. Memphis can ill afford to fall into a 2-0 hole when it hosts the Grizzles on Wednesday night in Game 2 of their Western Conference quarterfinal series. Memphis led by as many as 27 points and entered the fourth quarter with a 21-point cushion, tying a playoff record for the largest blown lead in the postseason.

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, TNT, FSTN

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS: Lost in the afterglow of the stunning comeback was an injury to starting forward Caron Butler, who is out four to six weeks with a broken hand. That underscored the importance of acquiring reserve swingman Nick Young in a midseason trade with the Washington Wizards. Young was sensational down the stretch in Game 1, burying three 3-pointers in a 60-second span and finishing with a team-high 19 points. That matched his season-high output since joining the Clippers. Los Angeles head coach Vinny Del Negro said he may start veteran Bobby Simmons in place of Butler and keep Young in his role as sixth man.

ABOUT THE GRIZZLIES: Memphis played a near-perfect three quarters before the collapse and must overcome the emotional wreckage of a loss that center Marc Gasol admitted was “heartbreaking.” Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins made a somewhat curious choice to start Zach Randolph, who came off the bench in 20 of the final 24 games after missing 2 1/2 months with a torn medial collateral ligament. The hero of last season’s playoffs, Randolph scored only six points on 3-of-13 shooting. Memphis went 37-17 with Marreese Speights in the starting lineup and 23-14 while Randolph was sidelined. With Randolph in a reserve role, the bench averaged a shade over 36 points per game.

          TRENDS:
          - Memphis is 0-5 against the spread in its last five overall.
          - Los Angeles is 1-4 against the spread in its five.
          - The under is 14-6 in Memphis' last 20.

          BUZZER BEATERS:

          1. Led by PG Chris Paul, Los Angeles had a league-high 14 regular-season wins when trailing by at least 10 points.

          2. Three teams have blown 18-point leads in the postseason – and all three (Dallas 2011; New Jersey 2002; Houston 1994) advanced to the NBA Finals. The Mavericks and Rockets each won championships.

          3. Memphis has dropped three of four meetings with the Clippers this season and had its 11-game home winning streak snapped.

Wednesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Streaking

Lance Lynn, St. Louis Cardinals (4-0, 1.33)

The only reason Lynn got a shot at a rotation spot is because of Chris Carpenter’s injury, but Cards bettors have to be happy with the early results. He was the first MLB pitcher to four wins and keeps hitters guessing with three different fastballs and two offspeed pitches. Lynn has 24 strikeouts and six walks in 27 innings.

James Shields, Tampa Bay Rays (4-0, 3.31)

By his standards, Shields was a little shaky in his last outing. He went six innings, allowing four runs on 11 hits, which included a pair of dingers. He still made off with a 8-4 victory and has struck out 28 batters in 35 1/3 innings and has thrown at least 100 pitches in each of his five starts.

                Slumping

Liam Hendricks, Minnesota Twins (0-1, 6.89 ERA)

Hendricks was drilled for nine hits and seven earned runs over just four innings of work last week against the BoSox. Before that, he allowed four runs and a couple of dingers in a no-decision to Tampa Bay. Dating back to last season, Hendricks has allowed at least one home run in five straight starts.

Jake Arrieta, Baltimore Orioles (1-2, 4.45 ERA)

After helping the Orioles win two of his first three starts, Arrieta has stumbled in his last two outings. He’s given up 10 hits and nine earned runs over 10 innings of combined work against the Angels and Athletics.
