Tuesday’s betting tips: Ozzie Guillen hints at big changes for Marlins

    Who’s hot

NBA: Atlanta has covered in 11 of its last 15.

NBA: Chicago has covered in four straight.

NBA: Boston is 7-3-1 against the spread in its last 11 road games.

NHL: Philadelphia has won four of its last five.

MLB: The over is 7-1 in Ubaldo Jimenez’s last eight starts.

    Who’s not

NBA: The over is 4-9-1 in Denver’s last 14 overall.

NBA: Philadelphia is 4-10 against the spread in its last 14 as an underdog.

NBA: The Los Angeles Lakers are 5-16 in their last 21 games as a favorite.

NHL: New Jersey is 3-10 in its last 13 games in Philadelphia.

MLB: Pittsburgh has won four of its last 16 games in St. Louis.

    Key stat

0.76 – Miami Marlins starter Ricky Nolasco, who is a native of California, is absolutely dynamite at AT&T Park in San Francisco. He climbs the hill in San Francisco Tuesday, working on a 3-0 record with a 0.76 ERA when visiting the Giants.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Nick Swisher, New York Yankees – Swisher left Sunday’s game with a hamstring injury and is expected to be out of action for about a week. The team is hoping that he won’t have to go on the disabled list as of now. Swisher is off to a great start for the Yanks, batting .284 with six homers and 23 RBIs.

    Game of the day

Denver Nuggets at Los Angeles Lakers (-4.5, 200)

    Notable quotable

"Can you blame them? I was booing too. Too bad they can't hear me. It's a shame, because we have a better ballclub than we've shown. People who survive in this game and people who have better days and years are the people who can make an adjustment quickly. If you cannot make adjustments, I will make them for you. That's my job. If the players don't start making adjustments, then I have to do it. I'm going to make very drastic changes. I don't know what yet. I have a long way to go, a six-hour flight [to San Francisco] to make that decision.” – Miami Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen after his team lost its eighth game in nine tries Monday. The Marlins are pegged as +140 underdogs Tuesday against the Giants.

    Notes and tips

The Cleveland Indians announced on Monday that outfielder Johnny Damon will join the team in Chicago on Tuesday, when the Indians arrive to begin a three-game series with the White Sox. Damon, 38, has been in extended spring training at the team's complex in Arizona since signing a minor-league contract on April 17. Cleveland will need to make a corresponding move to clear space for the two-time All-Star on the active roster. The Indians will be Damon's seventh MLB team, all of them in the American League. He hit .261 with 16 home runs and 73 RBI in 150 games last year for the Rays.

The Philadelphia Flyers’ power play is clicking at a staggering 44.8 percent clip so far in the playoffs, scoring 13 times on 29 opportunities. The Flyers’ power play scored once in Game 1 when Claude Giroux notched his seventh goal of the playoffs in the third period. As of Monday evening, about 61 percent of *********** Consensus bettors were backing the Flyers as -150 favorites for Tuesday’s Game 2.

Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton left Sunday's game against Tampa Bay after two innings because of lower-back stiffness. The Rangers listed Hamilton's status as day-to-day. Hamilton had an RBI single in the first inning, and he is hitting .395 with nine home runs and 25 RBIs this season.

Detroit Tigers outfielder Delmon Young has been suspended for seven days by Major League Baseball for his part in an altercation at a New York hotel Friday morning. Young is facing a misdemeanor aggravated harassment charge for allegedly making anti-Semitic comments to a panhandler during an altercation. The league made the announcement Monday, adding that the suspension is retroactive to April 27. Young will be eligible to return Friday night.

      Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Knicks lost by 10 at Miami, then Amare Stoudemire punched a fire extinguisher case and smashed the glass, cutting his hand open, needing attention from paramedics. Things aren't going well for New York.

-- Thunder made 37-39 from the foul line, beating Dallas 102-99, taking a 2-0 series lead. Two excellent games, though.

-- Pacers were down a hoop at halftime, then outscored Orlando 30-13 in third quarter to even series at 1-1 with a 93-78 win.

-- Capitals won 3-2 at Madison Square Garden, evening their series 1-1. Is it me, or are the NHL playoffs more interesting than the NBA's?

-- LA Kings won 5-2 at St Louis; they're now 5-0 on road in playoffs. Not bad for the #8 seed in the West.

-- Miami Marlins have now lost eight of their last nine games, and as they head out west, first game of the road trip is against Matt Cain. Yikes.

      *******************

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

      13) Kentucky Derby is this week; log on here Saturday for analysis on the Derby from my friends who know horse racing. I don’t write about horses, for the same reason that I don’t write about women—I don’t understand them.

      12) Redskins don’t have their first round draft pick in 2013 or 2014, why did they use a 4th-round pick on another QB, when they had Grossman/ Beck, two perfectly good backups? They drafted Kirk Cousins and cut Beck, when they could’ve kept Beck and drafted a young player for another position that would increase their depth. This could help explain why the Redskins haven’t won their division since 1999.

      11) What does NFL Draft Expert Mel Kiper Jr do this week, or until college football starts?

      10) I had forgotten that Larry Brown coached the 2004 Olympic basketball team to a bronze medal. Still think Gregg Popovich should be the Olympic coach.

      9) Why is Jamie Moyer starting games for the Rockies? Because he’s lefty? He’s 49 and gives no evidence of being good. Four of the nine guys in the Mets’ lineup Sunday weren’t born when Moyer broke into the big leagues. Why not let a younger guy pitch and get some experience?

      8) Before Sunday night’s improbable comeback win in Memphis, Clippers hadn’t won a playoff game since May 10, 2006. Hopefully they won’t have to wait six years for their next win.

      7) Utah State and San Jose State are joining the Mountain West; Louisiana Tech and UT-San Antonio are off to C-USA, as the WAC’s football side crumbles.

      6) Turns out that Robert Griffin III was born in Japan; his parents were in the military and stationed there.

      5) Tampa Bay Rays signed Hideki Matsui, who did OK with the A’s LY, playing the field in second half of the season. Not sure he’ll do that on the carpet at Tropicana Field, but he can still help a team with his bat.

      4) SI.com had a note today about how Theo Epstein wanted to add Jose Bautista off waivers from Toronto in September ’09; he hit .235 with 13 homers that year. Ownership vetoed the move; in 2010-11, Bautista hit a combined 97 homers with 227 RBI. No wonder Epstein jumped ship, but then again, he gave Carl Crawford $140M and also signed John Lackey.

      3) Three weeks ago, Virginia Tech assistant basketball coach James Johnson quit to go to Clemson, at which point the AD apparently thought to himself that he’s tired of losing good assistants/recruiters who didn’t want to work for Seth Greenberg, so he fired Greenburg and made Johnson head coach.
Coaching an ACC team shouldn’t be an entry level head coaching job, so the Hokies might move women’s coach Dennis Wolff (former men’s coach at Boston U) over to be Johnson’s assistant. Big difference between being a recruiter and running an entire program. Further proof that Tech is a football school.

      2) Binghamton made the NCAA tournament a few years back because Kevin Broadus, their coach at the time, was about as ethical as a used car salesman with a law degree. Things fell apart, the Bearcats’ program was gutted, but Broadus landed on his feet, welcomed back at Georgetown as an assistant coach.
Meanwhile, Mark Macon, the former Temple guard who was cleaning up Broadus’ mess, went 23-70 and got fired this week. The guy who made the mess got his old job back. Where does Macon go for his next job?

      1) Next week I’m off to the desert for spring vacation, so I’ll be watching playoff games and baseball in the sports books. Good stuff.

What bettors need to know: Tuesday's NHL playoff action
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Jersey Devils at Philadelphia Flyers (-150, 5.5)

        THE STORY
: Something about postseason hockey brings out the best in Danny Briere. The veteran winger scored the overtime winner in Game 1 of Philadelphia's Eastern Conference semifinal against New Jersey, giving the Flyers a leg up heading into Tuesday's second game at Wells Fargo Center. The Devils look to bounce back after hanging with the Flyers for most of the contest.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBCS, CBC

ABOUT THE DEVILS: New Jersey made its share of mistakes in Game 1, but head coach Peter DeBoer was still upbeat about his team's performance. "I think we deserved to be in the hockey game," he said. "We dominated the first period and could have had two or three goals. They took over the second and the third was relatively even." The Devils will almost certainly need more out of skilled winger Ilya Kovalchuk, who was held without a shot in the opener and gave the puck away more than once in the loss. Kovalchuk answered questions after the game, but bolted after being asked if he was healthy.

ABOUT THE FLYERS: Claude Giroux has been far and away the best player in the postseason so far, but Briere isn't far off. He scored twice in Game 1 and now has seven goals in seven playoff games after scoring just 16 in 70 regular-season contests. Briere actually had a goal disallowed earlier in the extra session, and was still upset about it afterward. "When I was on the bench there, there's a few seconds where you're shaking your head and you're going, 'Come on, they made the wrong call. I can't believe this is happening,'" he said. "Then I was like, 'All right, it's time to stop pouting.' I was fortunate to have another break."

        TRENDS:
        - New Jersey is 3-13 in its last 16 games in Philadelphia.
        - Philadelphia has won four of its last five home games.
        - The over is 10-3-1 in Philadelphia's last 14.

        OVERTIME:

        1. Briere has scored 36 playoff goals since leaving the Buffalo Sabres in 2007. The Sabres as a team have just 33 postseason goals in that span.

        2. Philadelphia has the best power play in the playoffs - converting on 44.8 percent of its chances - but went just 1 for 6 against the Devils, who posted the best regular-season penalty-killing rate in modern NHL history.

        3. Kovalchuk has three goals and three assists in eight playoff games but is a team-worst minus-5

          Armadillo's Write-Up

          Tuesday, May 1

Celtics @ Hawks-- Boston PG Rondo is suspended for this game; kind of hard to win on road without your floor general. Underrated Atlanta won its first round series in each of last three years, winning in 7-7-6 games, then losing in second round all three years; they held Pierce to 5-19 from floor in Game 1, as Boston was 0-11 outside arc. Atlanta has now won six of its last seven games overall. Johnson was just 3-15 from the floor in Game 1, but Hawks were +24 with him in 83-74 win.

76ers @ Bulls-- Rose tore his ACL near end of Game 1; luckily at this time of year, increased practice time allows for adjustments. Bulls won three of four vs Philly this year, winning by 9-12 in only meetings here. 76ers lost six of last eight visits to Windy City, with five of eight going over the total. Sixers are 3-9 in two playoff series the last three years; Holiday was -24 in 36:00 in Game 1, meaning Sixers were +12 in 12:00 he sat on the bench. Rose had 23-9-9 before his unfortunate injury.

Nuggets @ Lakers-- Denver lost four of five against Lakers this year, losing by 3-6-15 in their three visits here; they shot just 35.6% from the floor in Game 1, getting 15 shots blocked, 10 by Bynum. Nuggets won/ covered six of last eight games overall. Lakers covered last four games when the favorite, after failing to cover 12 in row as favorite before that. Nuggets are now 3-9 in their last dozen playoff games. Lakers won so easily its hard to analyze how they would do in closer game.

The Boston point guard was given a one-game suspension for bumping into official Marc Davis late in the opening game, won 83-74 by the fifth-seeded Hawks. Atlanta built a 19-point lead and then held off a charge by the fourth-seeded Celtics and scored the final five points of the game after Rondo was ejected.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBATV, Comcast SportsNet New England (Boston), Sport South (Atlanta)

ABOUT THE CELTICS: Boston missed all 11 of its 3-point attempts as top outside shooter Ray Allen missed the game with an ankle injury. Forward Paul Pierce missed all six of his 3-pointers while struggling to 12 points on 5-of-19 shooting. Rondo had 20 points and 11 assists but lost his cool with 41 seconds left after a scramble for a loose ball led to a foul call on teammate Brandon Bass. “Obviously I was upset about the call and I said some words to Marc,” Rondo said. “I deserved the first teach. As I was walking, I thought he stopped. My momentum carried me into him. I even think I tripped on his foot.”

ABOUT THE HAWKS: Atlanta could use a better outing from Joe Johnson after the All-Star guard/forward made just three of 15 shots in Game 1. Johnson missed all nine of his 3-point attempts and committed four turnovers while tallying just 11 points. The star of the opener was forward Josh Smith, who had 22 points and a personal playoff-best 18 rebounds. “He was an animal,” Atlanta coach Larry Drew said. “When he’s playing with that energy, he just makes us so much better.” The Hawks shot just 40.8 percent after opening the game by hitting 8 of 11 attempts.

          TRENDS:
          - The over is 9-1 in Atlanta's last 10 home games.
          - Boston is 13-5-2 against the spread in its last 20.
          - The underdog is 4-1 against the number in the last five meetings between the two teams.

          BUZZER BEATERS:

          1. The home team won all seven games when Boston beat Atlanta in a 2008 first-round series.

          2. Celtics forward Kevin Garnett overcame a 1-for-9 first half in Game 1 to finish with 20 points and 12 rebounds.

          3. Hawks center Zaza Pachulia (foot) is expected to sit out Game 2 after being held of the opener.

          Philadelphia 76ers at Chicago Bulls (-6.5, 176)

          THE STORY
: For a team that took Game 1 in convincing fashion, things could not be going much worse for the Chicago Bulls. With just 1:10 left in Game 1, reigning MVP Derrick Rose planted awkwardly and had to be helped off the court. An MRI revealed a torn anterior cruciate ligament, knocking Rose out for the rest of the postseason. The Philadelphia 76ers are in a position to take advantage if they can find a way through the Bulls’ suffocating defense.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT, CSN (Philadelphia), CSCH (Chicago)

ABOUT THE 76ERS: Philadelphia was thoroughly outplayed in Game 1, shooting under 40 percent from the field while letting the Bulls go off at 51 percent. The 76ers were a sub-.500 team the second half of the season, going 16-22 after Feb. 13. Where Philadelphia excelled during the regular season was on the defensive end, and without Rose on the floor it will need to focus more attention on Luol Deng and Richard Hamilton The 76ers were outrebounded, 47-38, in Game 1, when rookie Lavoy Allen started at center and Spencer Hawes played only 15 minutes off the bench.

ABOUT THE BULLS: Chicago went 18-9 without Rose during the regular season and is confident that it has the defense and secondary scoring to survive without its star deep into playoffs. Splitting the point guard duties will be C.J. Watson and John Lucas III. Both players shoot just under 40 percent from beyond the arc and will need to keep that up to prevent Philadelphia from collapsing on Carlos Boozer and Joakim Noah on the interior. One of the highlights from Game 1 came from Hamilton, who went 6 for 7 from the floor and finished with 19 points. Hamilton averaged 20.6 points in 120 career playoff games with the Detroit Pistons and will handle more of the scoring going forward.

          TRENDS:
          - Chicago has covered in four straight.
          - The home team has covered in five of the last seven meetings.
          - The over is 7-1 in Philadelphia's last eight.

          BUZZER BEATERS:

          1. Rose is also out for the Olympics, leaving Chris Paul, Deron Williams and Russell Westbrook as the top options for Team USA at point guard.

          2. Philadelphia leading scorer Lou Williams was held to nine points on 1-of-6 shooting in Game 1.

          3. The Bulls beat the 76ers, 89-80, without Rose on Mar. 17.

Denver Nuggets at Los Angeles Lakers (-4.5, 200)

          THE STORY
: Andrew Bynum and Magic Johnson will forever be linked in Los Angeles Lakers playoff lore. Bynum's unexpected triple-double lifted the Lakers to an emphatic victory over Denver in Game 1 of their first-round series, and he'll look to continue his low-post dominance as Los Angeles hosts the Nuggets in Tuesday's second game. Bynum equaled an NBA postseason record with 10 blocked shots, forcing the Nuggets to abandon their layup-reliant offense and settle for jump shots that simply didn't fall.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, TNT, Fox Sports West

ABOUT THE NUGGETS: Denver didn't go down quietly in Game 1 despite shooting a paltry 25.6 percent from the field. The Nuggets claim Bynum should have been whistled for repeated illegal defense violations, alleging the seven-footer spends far too much time in the painted area. Ty Lawson and Al Harrington were both blocked four times in the opening-game loss and combined to shoot just 7 for 25 from the floor. Connecting from long distance could be critical for the Nuggets, who made just four of 14 attempts from 3-point range in Game 1. The starting lineup combined to go 0 for 5 from beyond the arc.

ABOUT THE LAKERS: Despite Bynum's triple-double - the first by a Laker in the postseason since Johnson turned the trick in 1991 - a pair of forgettable incidents has taken some of the focus away from the Lakers' on-court performance. Small forward Metta World Peace remains on the sidelines after being suspended for a vicious elbow on Oklahoma City's James Harden, and power forward Jordan Hill faces an uncertain future after being charged with assaulting his girlfriend in Houston earlier this year. Hill, who came to the Lakers in a deadline deal with the Rockets, faces two-to-10 years in prison if convicted of the felony charge.

          TRENDS:
          - Denver has covered in four of its last five.
          - L.A. is 3-10 against the spread in its last 13 as a home favorite.
          - The under is 35-17 in the last 52 meetings.

          BUZZER BEATERS:

          1. Bynum became just the second player to record a points-rebounds-blocks triple-double in playoff history.

          2. Lakers G Kobe Bryant averages 25 points in 56 career games against the Nuggets. He had a game-high 31 in the opener.

          3. Bynum left Nuggets forward Danilo Gallinari awe-struck. "We've got to find a way to score before he gets in the paint, because he's impressive," Gallinari said.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Streaking

Cole Hamels, Philadelphia Phillies (3-1, 2.73 ERA)

Hamels allowed a leadoff double in his last start, then settled down to retire the next 18 Diamondbacks he faced, cruising to a 7-2 victory. He ended up going eight innings allowing two runs on four hits while striking out seven. Hamels now has 30 strikeouts compared to just three walks.

Jon Niese, New York Mets (2-0, 2.81 ERA)

It looks like the lefty is really hitting his stride this season. After going 11-11 with a 4.40 ERA last season, Niese has 23 strikeouts and seven walks in 25 2/3 innings this year. He has been stuck with two consecutive no-decisions, but hasn’t allowed more than three runs in any of his four starts.

                  Slumping

Adam Wainwright, St. Louis Cardinals (0-3, 7.32 ERA)

Wainwright was having major problems coming back from Tommy John surgery, but may have made a breakthrough in his last outing. He had allowed 15 runs combined in his first three starts before holding the Cubs to a single earned run in a six-inning no-decision. Still, he’s already allowed five homers this year and has trouble cracking 90 mph right now.

Francisco Liriano, Minnesota Twins (0-3, 11.02 ERA)

The Twins skipped Liriano’s last turn in the rotation to see if he could get it together. He’s allowed five runs in each of his first four starts and has 12 strikeouts compared to 13 walks. Liriano threw 70 pitches in Saturday’s bullpen session and says he feels better now, focusing on keeping the ball down in the zone.
