Friday's betting tips: Rockies a bad home bet

    Who’s hot

MLB: The over is 8-1 in Cleveland pitcher Justin Masterson’s last nine starts.

MLB: The Phillies are 19-3 in Halladay’s last 22 starts on five days’ rest.

MLB: The White Sox are 8-3 in John Danks’ last 11 home starts.

    Who’s not

MLB: The Rockies are 5-11 in their last 16 home games.

MLB: The Royals are 0-6 in their last six series openers.

MLB: The under is 5-12 in the Braves’ last 17 games.

    Key stat

12 – That’s how many regular-season series the Texas Rangers have won in a row heading into their weekend set against visiting Tampa Bay. Six of those have come this season. Texas has not lost a three-game series at the Ballpark in Arlington since July 1-3 against the Marlins last year.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Orlando Magic center Glen Davis (ankle) is questionable for Saturday’s playoff opener at Indiana. X-rays were negative on Davis' ankle, but there’s been no word on the severity of the injury. With Dwight Howard ruled out following back surgery, the Magic desperately need Davis.

    Games of the day

Tampa Bay Rays at Texas Rangers (-140, 9)

Washington Nationals at Los Angeles Dodgers (-175, 6)

    Notable quotable

"They punish mistakes. It's not singles. It's usually extra-base hits and home runs.” – Yankees manager Joe Girardi on the Rangers, who lead MLB with 107 runs scored.

    Tips and notes

Thunder swingman James Harden, the best sixth man in the NBA, will practice Friday after recovering from the concussion he sustained when Metta World Peace elbowed him hard in the hard. Harden does not have a minutes restriction heading into the playoffs. "I'm thankful that James is healthy. That's the bottom line," OKC coach Scott Brooks said.

Nashville defenseman Hal Gill (lower body injury) is practicing with a regular line and should play in the second-round series against Phoenix. "He’s moving pretty good," Preds coach Barry Trotz said. "He’s practiced and he’s had a little more of the grind and the battles that he needed to have to see where he is. Right now he’s on track and I expect him to play in the series."

Indians RF Shin-Soo Choo missed his second straight game Thursday with a sore left hamstring. Aaron Cunningham replaced Choo, who has five doubles, nine RBIs and 10 walks in 15 games played.

Kansas City starter Danny Duffy (3.63 ERA) won’t be on the mound as scheduled Friday due to elbow tightness. The 23-year-old lefty isn’t believed to be seriously hurt, but the Royals aren’t taking any chances. Everett Teaford is expected to start against the Twins.

      Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Highest of drama in south Florida, where New Jersey broke Panthers' hearts with a goal in the second OT, winning Game 7

-- in the last 18 Game 7's that went OT, the road team won 13 of the 18 games.

-- Chicago-Philly NBA series starts out with Saturday-Tuesday-Friday dates; spread out games, very different than the regular season.

-- Heath Bell walked four guys in the 9th inning as Florida blew a lead and has now lost its last seven road games.

-- Memphis Grizzlies jumped out to a 27-8 lead and beat Orlando easily, now hosts the Clippers Sunday instead of going to LA.

-- Philip Humber in the start after his perfect game: five IP, nine runs, L.

-- An argument that will rage for decades; who was worse; the 9-72 Sixers or the 7-59 Bobcats?

      **************

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Quick impressions of the NFL Draft.......

      13) Four trades before 8:30; the rookie salary cap made trades easier, made the draft way more interesting. Best way to follow it was on Twitter- they had transactions before NFL Network or ESPN.

      12) ESPN or NFL Network, which to watch? No one in America does his job better than Mel Kiper Jr; ESPN was smart, limited their crew to Kiper, Jon Gruden and host Chris Berman (I don't like Berman, but he's good on this, he deferred well), so they were my choice.

Not a big Mike Mayock fan; NFL Network should have a retired GM from an NFL team (Ron Wolf???) as their draft expert, or at least on board so we can learn tidbits about the draft. Too many ex-players on NFLN, and we're learning that ex-players don't teach us as much as ex-coaches.

      11) Nine SEC players taken in the first round, eight of them defenders, so we know what drove the nation's best conference LY. Dee-fence.

      10) USC has now had 76 first round picks, more than any other school.

      9) Browns must really like Trent Richardson; they gave the Vikings three picks to move up from 4th to 3rd. Minnesota still got the guy they wanted.

      8) Vikings took USC Matt Kalil with the 4th pick; they've had Trojans on the OL before, Ron Yary and Steve Riley, both of whom they drafted early, both of whom lasted 10+ years in Minnesota.

      7) When Seattle drafted pass-rushing LB Bruce Irvin with the 15th pick, we heard "mind boggling" and "shocking" in the next 45 seconds. Even the kid himself had optimistically hoped to be taken in the second round, since he has a history of legal problems, and only three years ago was a safety at the junior college level. Hope the young man appreciates this opportunity.

      6) Three QBs were taken in the first eight picks, first time that happened since 1999. Miami's Tannehill will be fascinating to follow; he was a WR at Texas A&M until two years ago. He won't be expected to play this season, could very well see action on special teams. His college coach is now the Dolphins' offensive coordinator (Mike Sherman).

      5) Why does Roger Goodell hug every draft pick like they're a relative he hasn't seen since grade school? They added a nice touch, by the way, with names on the back of the jerseys of drafted players (for the first time).

      4) Eagles led in the 4th quarter in five of their eight losses LY, thats how fine the line is between missing the playoffs and winning a Super Bowl, as Philly finished only a game behind the champion Giants.

      3) Cleveland drafted Trent Richardson and 27-year old Brandon Weeden, a solid QB who some pundits wear will start from Day 1. Browns' offense is going to be much-improved this season. Colt McCoy is 25, by the way.

      2) Rams have three of the first 15 picks Friday. Good night for watching the draft, a little baseball later on and some fried rice for good luck.

      1) When I go to Las Vegas in July, I'm heading over to M Resort to get the betting lines on every NFL game, which will be posted in early June. We'll hopefully post them here and keep track of how much they change once the season starts. Should be an interesting study.

NHL Western Conference Round 2 series prices and previews

St. Louis Blues (2) vs Los Angeles Kings (8)

Series price: Blues (-165), Kings (+145)

Season series: St. Louis (1-2-1), Los Angeles (3-1)

If you are a fan of goal scoring you won’t be overly entertained by the Blues and Kings. Two of the four regular-season meetings between the two clubs ended in 1-0 shutouts.

The Blues will be without starting netminder Jaroslav Halak for at least the first two games of the series. Brian Elliott did a great job filling in against the Sharks picking up three wins while posting a goals against of 1.37 and a save percentage of 0.949.

Jonathan Quick watched the team in front him play some of their best hockey of the season against Vancouver and when his mates did struggle he was there to pick them up by holding the Sedins and Co. to just eight goals in five games.

While much of this series will focus on goaltending and team defense there is one forward who could end up being a difference maker. Andy MacDonald missed the majority of the regular season due to injury but the pint-sized winger picked up eight points in five games in the first round of the playoffs.

Blues head coach Ken Hitchcock, knowing that his team is the favorite, attempted to put the pressure on the Kings.

"When you beat the President's Trophy winner, you become the No. 1 seed, and I think everybody knows that," Hitchcock said. "We've just got to be on top of our game. If we're on top of our game it's going to be a great series."

Regardless of who wins, this series is an under bettors dream.

        Series Prediction: Blues in 7.

Phoenix Coyotes (3) vs Nashville Predators (4)

Series price: Coyotes (+145), Predators (-165)

Season series: Phoenix (2-1-1), Nashville (2-2)

Another goalie duel here with a couple of heavyweights between the pipes. In one corner you’ve got 6-5 Pekka Rinne with a first round save percentage of .944 and a goals-against average of 1.81 against the Detroit Red Wings. In the other corner you have 6-4 Mike Smith fresh off of stealing a series from the Chicago Blackhawks and thought by many to be the MVP of the first round of the post-season.

The two clubs split their four regular season meetings. Surprisingly Coyotes back up Jason Labarbera started three of those four games and the one that Smith started proved to be an uncharacteristic 5-4 shootout between the two clubs.

Because of the quality in net, this series could come down to special teams. The Predators had the best power-play in the league during the regular season but struggled in the first round capitalizing on a playoff-worst 9.1 percent of their chances against the Red Wings. The Coyotes are the proud owners of the playoffs best penalty kill at 94.7 percent.

The one area where the Predators do have a significant advantage is on the blue line with Shea Weber and Ryan Suter being the best 1-2 punch in the league. The Coyotes caught a few lucky breaks against Corey Crawford and the Hawks; they may not get those same opportunities against Weber, Suter and Rinne.

        Series Prediction: Predators in 6.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Friday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    STREAKING

                    Wandy Rodriguez, Houston Astros

                    1-2, 1.42 ERA

The 33-year-old lefty has allowed one run in his last two starts covering 14 innings. Batters are hitting .208 against Rodriguez, who has a WHIP of 1.03. He should have a better record, but the Astros scored a total of six runs in his first three starts. Rodriguez gets the Reds on Friday.

                    Matt Harrison, Texas Rangers
                    3-0, 1.66 ERA

The Rays don’t like facing Harrison, who has a 2.33 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 19 1/3 career innings against Tampa Bay. The 26-year-old lefty has a WHIP of 0.97 this season, and has held opposing batters to a .215 average. He’s averaging just over seven innings per start.

                    SLUMPING

                    Justin Masterson, Cleveland Indians

                    0-2, 6.65 ERA

The 27-year-old righty dominated on Opening Day, but has been terrible in three starts since. He’s allowed 15 earned runs in that span of 13 2/3 innings. He’s walked 12 batters, contributing to an unsightly WHIP of 1.62. However, Masterson has a 2.43 ERA in 37 career innings vs. the Angels.

                    Mike Leake, Cincinnati Reds
                    0-2, 6.50 ERA

After allowing five extra-base hits in his last outing, Leake has yielded 10 earned runs over his past two starts covering 12 innings. The league is batting .310 against him. Alarmingly, he has struck out just eight batters all season. Friday against Houston, Leake might be pitching to stay in the rotation.
