Thursday's betting tips: Devils struggle as road favorites

    Weather to watch

A 15-mph wind will be blowing out to left-center when the Tigers host the Mariners on Thursday afternoon. Temperatures will be in the high 50s, with a 10 percent chance of rain.

    Who’s hot

NBA: Dallas is 6-1 ATS in its last seven games following a SU loss.

NBA: The under is 10-3 in Toronto’s last 13 games.

NHL: Ottawa is 11-4 in its last 15 games as an underdog.

MLB: Detroit is 15-6 in Rick Porcello’s last 21 starts.

MLB: The over is 6-1 in umpire Tony Randazzo’s last seven games behind the plate. He’s calling Toronto-Baltimore on Thursday.

    Who’s not

NBA: The home team is 5-17 ATS in the last 22 Lakers-Kings games.

NBA: Portland is 1-8 ATS in its last nine games playing on two days’ rest.

NHL: The Devils are 2-6 in their last eight games as road favorites.

MLB: The Angels are 0-7 in their last seven in Game 3 of a series.

MLB: San Diego is 0-4 in Edinson Volquez’s last four starts.

    Key stat

47 – That’s how many consecutive save opportunities Brewers closer John Axford has converted. Axford’s latest came Tuesday, when he allowed one hit in a scoreless ninth. He’s tied with Brad Lidge for the fourth-longest streak in baseball history.

    Injuries that shouldn’t be overlooked

The Miami Heat’s Big Three -- LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh – are very iffy for Thursday’s season finale against Washington. All three sat out Tuesday. Miami is locked in as the No. 2 seed in the playoffs, so there’s no real urgency for coach Erik Spoelstra to play his stars. If any do play, look for very limited minutes.

    Games of the day

Ottawa Senators at New York Rangers (-165, 5)

New Jersey Devils at Florida Panthers (105, 5)

    Notable quotable

“He comes to a team in the middle of the playoffs after winning a championship in college, and I’m sure there’s a letdown after the [college] season is over. And, not only coming into the playoffs, but an elimination game. I just don’t think much fazes the guy. The mindset, the mental part of it, that’s what’s really interesting … I’ve been really impressed with that.” – Rangers coach John Tortorella on rookie Chris Kreider, who scored the eventual game-winning goal in Game 6. Game 7 is Thursday at Madison Square Garden.

    Tips and notes

Road teams are 11-4 in overtime in the NHL playoffs, after the Capitals won Game 7 in Boston on Wednesday.

Hornets guard Eric Gordon has been ruled out of Thursday’s regular-season finale because of his bad back. It was a nightmare season for Gordon, who played in just nine games. He averaged 20.6 points and 3.4 assists in those cameo appearances.

A bad season for the Red Sox got worse with the news that OF Carl Crawford went to get his sore left elbow examined by Dr. James Andrews. Crawford, who also had offseason wrist surgery, is out indefinitely.

Devils center Travis Zajac missed most of the regular season with an injured Achilles, but he’s coming up big in the playoffs. The overtime goal he scored Tuesday to force Thursday’s Game 7 in Florida was his third tally of the series, more than he scored all season. Zajac played just 15 regular-season games, getting two goals and four assists. “I firsthand saw what this guy went through for months of rehab and the setbacks in the gym by yourself and on the ice by yourself and left behind while the team is traveling,” Devils coach Pete DeBoer said. “It’s not a lot of fun, and it couldn’t have happened to a better guy.”

      Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- In their mostly sad 41-year history, the Clippers have never had a road record over .500; they were 16-15 before losing in Atlanta/NYC last two nights, and are now likely to open the playoffs on the road.

-- Memo to Carlos Gonzalez: When you're playing LF on a sunny day, bring sunglasses out with you. Otherwise, a routine fly ball might fall in and the other team might score five runs against a pitcher who is on my fantasy team. Earned runs. Not that I'm bitter or anything.

-- On the bright side, the gritty/gutty A's beat Chicago in 14 innings and are now 10-10 after 20 games. Cespedes was a steal at $9M a year. Wait until he has Manny Ramirez hitting behind him.

-- Braves looked awful the first week of the season, but now they're 12-7 after a 4-2 win in LA, when they scored three runs in ninth inning.

-- Angels are 6-12 and Albert Pujols hasn't homered; they're 8.5 games behind Texas already. Its a long season, but its getting shorter.

-- Spurs sent Parker/Duncan/Ginobili home, still beat the Suns in Phoenix, in what might've been Steve Nash's last home game in the desert. If I'm the Commish of the NBA, I've got a problem with Popovich not being there

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Catching up with the last six months........

If you’ve been out of the country the last few months, or in a coma, or just haven’t been paying any attention, a lot of strange things have happened in the last six months. Here’s a sample…….

      13) At least six Secret Service agents have been fired after a scandal erupted over a fracas in a Colombian hotel over a dispute with a hooker. Over $47. These are the specially-trained agents who protect the President, the most powerful man in the world. Their careers were ruined over $47. Brilliant!!!!

      12) San Diego State and SMU are now members of the Big East Conference, though the Aztecs are in just for football. Not sure how little kids will pass geography anymore. I learned Geography and Math via sports. SMU is in Dallas, by the way. That’s Texas, albeit the eastern part of Texas.

      11) SMU also hired a new basketball coach, well, actually, an old coach, 71-year old Larry Brown. Last time he coached a college team was 1988, when none of his current players were alive. Brown can coach, but he never stays anywhere very long and last two college teams he coached wound up on probation. Other than that, this was a terrific hire.

      10) The football coach at Arkansas was fired after he got into a motorcycle accident, with his girlfriend on the back of the bike. Not only is he married, but the coach had recently hired the girlfriend to work in the Arkansas athletic department. Lying about the whole thing didn’t help his cause any.

      9) The unthinkable happened in central Pennsylvania; not only was Joe Paterno fired because one of his top assistants turned out to be a pedophile, but the 85-year old Paterno became ill and died a few sad weeks later. The family has reserved the right to sue the school in the future; this could still get even uglier. All in all, this was just unspeakably sad on many levels.

      8) Back in December, the Giants were 7-7 and no one at Swamp Stadium was very happy; six weeks later, they somehow won the Super Bowl, but all the eastern media talks about is the Jets trading for Tim Tebow, taking the spotlight away from the defending champs, who couldn’t be happier.

      7) Meanwhile out in Denver, John Fox made the playoffs with the passing-challenged Tebow at QB, but now the Broncos have Peyton Manning at QB, after the Colts let him walk rather than pay him a $28M bonus. Fox is probably the happiest man in America right now, other than the people who split the $218M Mega Millions jackpot a few weeks ago.

      6) Mariners/A’s opened the baseball season with two games in Japan; the games started at 5am in the east (2am in their hometown markets) and they counted. This should never, ever happen again.

      5) Red Sox fired the manager who won their only two world titles since 1917. If I owned the Sox, Terry Francona would have a lifetime contract and a statue on Causeway Street, but instead he got a new job at ESPN. He seems happy at least. Red Sox fans? Not so much.

      4) NBA had a lockout, so they started the season seven weeks late, on Christmas Day, playing a condensed 66-game slate that crammed too many games into too short a time. Miami went from 76 practices LY to 24 this year. The quality of the product was dented, but league office pretended not to notice. As long as people buy season tickets, who cares?

      3) New York Knicks plucked a point guard from the D-League who played in the Ivy League; they quickly started winning so many games that the point guard was on the cover of Sports Illustrated twice in the same month. Then team’s lackadaisical star came back from injury, the team’s chemistry was ruined, the Knicks started losing again and the coach got fired, which made the star happy, so he started trying hard again, but the point guard got hurt and now they’re back to where they were last fall, a mediocre team that won’t get by the first round of the playoffs.

      2) Vancouver Canucks won the President’s Trophy for the second year in a row, but became the sixth Prez Cup winner to get ousted in the first round of the playoffs. Teams from LA/Nashville/Phoenix/St Louis have advanced in the playoffs. In the hockey world, pigs are flying.

      1) New Orleans Saints were blamed for every disaster from the Lindbergh kidnapping to global warming to Digger Phelps still being on TV. Coaches were suspended, players will be soon. The team’s owner is mad at his granddaughter, who was supposed to take his place. In short, its been a wild six months. Where you been?

        Thursday, April 26

Senators @ Rangers-- #1 seed New York has pressure on it, especially with the Bruins/Canucks already getting ousted; road team won four of last five series games. Two of Senators' three series win came in OT; they're been outscored in first two periods, 9-5 in series, but have 7-3 edge from third period on. Coach Tortorella won Cup with ’04 Lightning, but hasn’t won playoff series (0-4) since. Ottawa hasn’t won playoff series (0-2) since losing ’07 final to Ducks. In NHL history, home teams are 80-51 in Game 7's, 0-1 this year.

Devils @ Panthers-- The way these playoffs are unfolding, teams with little or no history are advancing, which has to give Florida boost here, since this is its first playoff series in 12 years. Panthers were 1-10 on power play in Games 4-6, after going 6-10 in first three games; Panthers have been outshot 74-48 in first period so far in series, with Devils outscoring Florida 8-2. Devils are 4-17 on power play in series; they're 6-8 in last 14 road games overall. Florida won three of its last four home games.

Senators at Rangers: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ottawa Senators at New York Rangers (-165, 5)

        THE STORY:
For the fourth time in his career, Henrik Lundqvist was named a finalist for the Vezina Trophy. If the top-seeded New York Rangers wish to continue their pursuit of the Stanley Cup, they'll need the stud goaltender to prove his worth in Thursday's seventh and deciding game of the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series against the Ottawa Senators. New York has won all three of its previous Game 7 matches at Madison Square Garden.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBCS, MSG

ABOUT THE SENATORS: Daniel Alfredsson returned following a three-game absence due to a mild concussion in Monday's 3-2 loss in Game 6. The captain showed an uncharacteristic level of frustration by smashing his stick and stomping on a water bottle as he spent time on the bench during the third period. "It was a little frustration and I probably should have handled myself better," Alfredsson said. Chris Neil has been generous on the scoreboard as well as with his fists. The agitator netted his second goal of the series in Game 6 and engaged in a lengthy battle with Brandon Prust. As he fought, Neil also encouraged the crowd at Scotiabank Place to keep chanting his name.

ABOUT THE RANGERS: Derek Stepan picked a fine time to make his presence known in the series. The second-year center collected his first points of the series with a power-play goal and two assists in Game 6. "I got a little of a monkey off my back," Stepan said. "I was having a tough time scoring. It was a relief to find the back of the net. Not only that, the power play gets a boost from it, too." Boston College star Chris Kreider was credited with the game-winning goal - and his first tally of his career - when he scored late in the second period. Brian Boyle, who is nursing a concussion, was not on the ice for morning practice on Wednesday.

        TRENDS:

*Senators are 11-4 in their last 15 games as underdogs.
*Rangers are 1-4 in their last five home games.
*Over is 6-1-1 in Ottawa's last eight road games.

        OVERTIME:

        1. Craig Anderson's shutout streak of 145 minutes, 27 seconds came to an end during the Rangers' three-goal second period in Game 6.

        2. After posting career bests in wins (39) and goals-against average (1.97) during the regular season, Lundqvist has stopped 179 of 190 shots in the series for a sizzling save percentage of .942.

Devils at Panthers: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Jersey Devils at Florida Panthers (105, 5)

        THE STORY:
The Florida Panthers get another shot at ending a lengthy postseason drought as they entertain the New Jersey Devils in Game 7 of their Eastern Conference quarterfinal series Thursday night. Florida is seeking its first playoff series victory since the 1996 Eastern Conference finals. Travis Zajac scored his third goal of the playoffs 5:39 into overtime to give the Devils a 3-2 victory in Game 6 on Tuesday. Zajac leads all scorers in the series with three goals and three assists.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, TSN, MSG Plus, FSN, NHL Network

ABOUT THE DEVILS: The Devils, who will be playing their 14th Game 7 in team history, outshot the Panthers 42-16 in Game 6. The club is 6-7 in Game 7s, including 3-5 on the road. New Jersey won its last road Game 7 in the 2003 Eastern Conference finals in Ottawa. In order for the Devils to win their first playoff matchup since 2007, they'll have to accomplish something they haven't done in the postseason in four years - win two in a row. New Jersey won three straight to take its first-round series with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2007.

ABOUT THE PANTHERS: Goaltender Scott Clemmensen made 39 saves for the Panthers in relief of Jose Theodore, who was a late scratch with a knee injury prior to Game 6. Theodore took part in an optional practice Wednesday. "I've been playing this game all series long who we're going to start, and the truth of the matter is there's a question mark because we have trust in both our goalies," Coach Kevin Dineen said. "But Theo has been our go-to guy, and if he's available, he'll be the one running, I think."

        TRENDS:

*Under is 6-2-5 in the last 13 meetings in Florida.
*Devils are 21-10-1 in the last 32 meetings in Florida.
*Panthers are 5-11 in their last 16 overall.
*Home team is 4-1 in the last five meetings.

        OVERTIME:

        1. Devils goalie Martin Brodeur is 5-4 in Game 7 matchups over his career and 11-12 in elimination games.

        2. Panthers defenseman Jason Garrison, their leading goal scorer on the blue line, is questionable with a lower-body injury.

        3. Florida forward Kris Versteeg has eight goals in 10 games versus New Jersey this season.

Thursday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                          STREAKING

                          Philip Humber, Chicago White Sox

                          1-0, 0.63 ERA

The 29-year-old right-hander just tossed the 21st perfect game in MLB history. Opponents are batting .122 against Humber, who has fanned 16 and walked three batters this season. Humber left his team’s West Coast trip early to return to Chicago to be with his wife as she gives birth. He gets the Red Sox at home Thursday.

                          Jonathon Niese, New York Mets
                          2-0, 2.89 ERA

The 25-year-old lefty has gone at least six innings in each of his three starts. He has a WHIP of 1.13, and the league is hitting .200 against him. Niese, who faces Miami at home Thursday, has limited current Marlins batters to a .208 average (16 for 77) in his career.

                          SLUMPING

                          Luis Mendoza, Kansas City Royals

                          0-2, 6.92 ERA

The league is batting .414 against Mendoza, who has an ugly strikeout-to-walk ratio of 3:9. He gets the Indians on Thursday. When he faced them April 15, he was lit up for nine hits, four walks and nine runs (five earned) over four innings. The 28-year-old right-hander likely will get booted from the rotation as soon as Felipe Paulino returns.

                          Brian Matusz, Baltimore Orioles
                          0-3, 7.98 ERA

If Matusz doesn’t pitch well against the Blue Jays on Thursday, he could get sent down. The 25-year-old lefty has won one of his last 13 decisions. When he faced Toronto on April 15, Matusz gave up two homers and five earned runs in five innings. Opponents are batting .349 against him.
