Tuesday's betting tips: Devils on 0-4 skid in elimination games

    Weather to watch

A 15-mph wind will be blowing out to center when the Mets host the Marlins on Tuesday night. Temperatures will be in the mid- to low-50s, with a 20 percent chance of rain.

    Who’s hot

NBA: OKC is 7-1 ATS in its last eight games vs. losing teams.

NBA: The road team is 6-1 ATS in the last seven Clippers-Hawks games.

NHL: The underdog is 5-1 in the last six Panthers-Devils games.

MLB: Baltimore is 5-1 in Tommy Hunter’s last six starts.

MLB: The under is 6-0 in Brewers pitcher Randy Wolf’s last six starts vs. Houston.

    Who’s not

NBA: Miami is 3-8 ATS in its last 11 games playing on one day’s rest.

NBA: The favorite is 1-5 ATS in the last six Suns-Jazz games.

NHL: The over is 1-9-1 in Florida’s last 11 games playing on two days’ rest.

MLB: Philly is 1-5 in Vance Worley’s last six starts.

MLB: San Diego is 2-11 in Clayton Richard’s last 13 home starts.

    Key stat

4 -- The last four times the Devils have faced elimination, they’ve been dispatched immediately each time. New Jersey is 1-6 when facing elimination since the Devils’ last Cup championship in 2003. That lone victory came in 2006 against Carolina. Since moving from the Meadowlands, Ner Jersey has not won a playoff series at Prudential Center. This would be New Jersey’s fourth straight first-round exit, not including last season when the Devils missed the playoffs.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman says his shoulder is feeling a lot better and he should be in the lineup when Washington visits San Diego on Tuesday. Zimmerman was scratched from Saturday’s game with inflammation in his shoulder, then Sunday’s game was rained out. Zimmerman is hitting .224 with one homer, four doubles, seven RBIs and 10 runs scored.

    Games of the day

Florida Panthers at New Jersey Devils (-160, 5)

New York Yankees at Texas Rangers (-110, 9)

    Notable quotable

“Career-wise, I don’t feel like it’s going to be the last of it. Opportunity-wise, you never know. Even [if] I do decide to come back, who knows what kind of position we’re going to be in at this time next year? I am in the position where we’re able to stay alive in the playoffs, and want to do as much as I can. It’s in the back of my head because of the chance with a team I’ve really enjoyed all year. I just want to keep this going. Regardless of what the future will bring me, that’s irrelevant now.” – future Hall of Fame goalie Martin Brodeur, who could be playing his final game as a Devil in Tuesday’s Game 6 vs. Florida.

    Tips and notes

Barcelona star Lionel Messi returned to practice Monday in advance of Tuesday’s semifinal second leg with Chelsea. Messi had missed practice on Sunday with what the club described as "slight physical discomfort.” The three-time winner of the Ballon d’Or award did not score in Saturday night’s 2-1 loss to rival Real Madrid.

It’s unclear if LeBron James will play when the Heat visits the Celtics on Tuesday. Asked if he might sit out the final two regular-season games, the MVP candidate replied, "I could use the rest." LBJ scored 32 points in Sunday’s 97-88 win over Houston.

Florida Panthers defenseman Jason Garrison, who has a big shot from the blueline, is expected to miss his third straight game with a lower body injury. The 6-2, 216-pounder had 16 goals and 17 assists in the regular season, and a goal and assist in the first three games against the Devils. Florida leads the series 3-2 entering Tuesday’s game at the Prudential Center.

The St. Louis Cardinals are making history. Counting the one-game season-opening trip to Miami, the Cards have won six straight series. No team defending its World Series title had started the season with that many consecutive series wins since the New York Giants, coming off the 1921 championship, won their first six series in 1922. If you count each playoff round last year as one series, St. Louis has won 16 straight series.

      Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Rangers forced Game 7 with a 3-2 win at Ottawa; road team is 4-2 so far in this series.

-- Congrats to Phoenix Coyote fans, who got their first playoff series win Monday night. Not much thats as fun as playoff hockey.

-- Matt Kemp has nine homers already and didn't pull any of them.

-- Nets played their last home game in New Jersey Monday night, losing by 18 to Philly. Nets' best days were in the ABA, on Long Island.

-- San Antonio Spurs won/covered their last eight games; they're playing very well as the regular season comes to an end.

-- Charlotte Bobcats lost their last 21 games, going 5-16 against spread in those games; if they don't fire anyone after the season, what does it say? It says they were losing on purpose to get Anthony Davis in draft. With the lottery the way it is, there are no guarantees, though.

      **************

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

      13) Bobby Petrino once replaced John L Smith as the football coach at Louisville; now Smith is replacing Petrino at Arkansas, a few months after Smith took the head coaching job at Weber State. Maybe they could do a switch again and Petrino could go to Ogden and coach at Weber. He does need a job.

      12) Seth Greenberg got the boot at Virginia Tech; no idea where they turn for a coach. Not easy to recruit hoopers to Blacksburg, its off the beaten path. Greenberg will be very good on TV; apparently he was hard to work for, going through six assistant coaches the last four years.

      11) I’m sitting here thinking and I still can’t believe that Urban Meyer left the Florida job to live in Ohio. He hasn’t stayed anywhere (Bowling Green/ Utah/Florida) very long, makes you wonder if he’s capable of maintaining a top program for the long haul.

      10) If Dolphins pass on drafting Ryan Tannehill Thursday, what does that say about the kid? His old college coach (Mike Sherman) works for Miami now. If Sherman doesn’t want him, when he needs a QB, why should anyone else want him?

      9) City of Buffalo had 58 less inches of snow than normal this winter. Someone’s going to pay for that down the road.

      8) When Ron Artest came into the NBA, his hometown’s Knicks knew he was a wack job and passed on drafting him, which turned out to be a huge mistake because they drafted some French guy (Frederic Weis) who never played a game. Anyway, Artest’s suspension shouldn’t be severe because James Harden is/isn’t hurt, it should be severe just because it was so obviously an intentional attempt to injure.

      7) Over the length of his career, Artest has been suspended 13 times for a total of 111 games, and the meter will be running again soon.

      6) Fran Fraschilla is rumored to be the man for North Texas, since he wouldn’t have to move from where he already lives, and UNT is rumored to be moving up to Conference USA soon.

      5) Red Sox once turned down a Miguel Montero/Michael Bowden trade. Whoops. As for the Diamondbacks, sometimes the best trades are the ones you don’t make.

      4) Pirates haven’t scored 6+ runs in a game yet, and haven’t allowed 6+ runs; according to Elias Sports Bureau, which knows stuff, it’s the 3rd-longest such streak to start a season of all time, behind the ’65 Pirates (16 games) and the ’43 Tigers (17).

      3) Feel bad for the Canucks, who have never won the Stanley Cup and are now the 6th Presidents’ Cup winner to get ousted in the first round of the playoffs. They’ve had two great regular seasons in a row, but no Cup yet.

      2) Since September 1, 2011, the Red Sox are 12-30 in games that count.

      1) Getting back to Arkansas for a minute; John L Smith is walking into a good situation; they drew 45,200 for the spring football game this weekend, despite all the BS surrounding the program. There is support and there is talent. Most importantly, most of the players know him and respect him. Coach Smith has a chance to be very successful with the Razorbacks.

Panthers @ Devils-- The way these playoffs are unfolding, teams with little or no history are advancing, which has to give Florida boost here, since this is its first playoff series in 12 years. Panthers were 1-9 on power play in Games 4-5, after going 6-10 in first three games; Panthers have been outshot 61-42 in first period so far in series, with Devils outscoring Florida 7-2. Panthers lost five of last six road games, but are 4-4 in last eight visits here. New Jersey won five of its last six home games. Devils are 3-13 on power play in series.

Ice picks: Tuesday's best NHL bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Florida Panthers at New Jersey Devils (-160, 5)

The Panthers rebounded from a 4-0 defeat in Game 4 with a convincing 3-0 victory in Game 5, moving them one win from their first series win in 16 years. Panthers goaltender Jose Theodore made 30 saves for his second career playoff shutout after being pulled in Game 3 for allowing three goals on six shots.

Kris Versteeg has two goals and four points in the series. Including regular season and playoffs, Versteeg has seven goals and 10 points in nine games against the Devils in 2011-12.

Panthers defenseman Brian Campbell was just named a finalist for the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy. The trophy is awarded to the player who has exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of play. Campbell totalled only six penalty minutes during the regular season and ranked second among all defensemen with 53 points. He also set a franchise record with 30 power-play assists.

The Devils need consecutive wins to avoid a first-round elimination for the fourth straight time. They have not won back-to-back playoff games since 2006, the last time they won a playoff series.

The talk in New Jersey is about Martin Brodeur and Zach Parise possibly playing their last game as Devils.

The underdog is 5-1 in the last six meetings between New Jersey and Florida.

        Pick: Panthers

Pick 'n' roll: Tuesday's best NBA bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Clippers at Atlanta Hawks (-2, 192.5)

The Cllippers' chances of securing the third seed in the Western Conference are hanging by a thread as they visit the Hawks on Tuesday night. The Clippers need victories over the Hawks and Knicks, combined with a loss by the rival Lakers to Sacramento.

While the Clips may not be able to overtake Kobe Bryant and Co., they aren't entirely secure in the fourth spot, either. They need a win in either of their final two games to ensure they'll open the playoffs at the Staples Center, with a first-round meeting with the Memphis Grizzlies awaiting them. Two losses, combined with two Memphis wins, would give the Grizzlies the edge.

Point guard Chris Paul helped keep the Clippers' Pacific Division title hopes intact Sunday, scoring 33 points and adding 13 assists and eight steals in a 107-98 win over New Orleans.

Atlanta is enjoying a strong finish to the season, going 7-3 in its last 10 games. Two of those losses have come by two points or less -- an 88-86 defeat in Boston on April 11 and a heart-wrenching 113-112 defeat against New York on Sunday. The back-and-forth affair left team scoring leader Joe Johnson with a decidedly bad taste in his mouth. "It's frustrating that we're still playing for something and defensively we were non-existent," he said. ''There was no help (on defense). If you were guarding somebody 1-on-1, you were definitely guarding 1-on-1."

The Clippers prevailed 96-82 in the previous meeting on March 14. They are 6-2 ATS in their last eight visits to Atlanta.

          Pick: Clippers

New Orleans Hornets at Golden State Warriors (2, 192.5)

Two franchises that can only lament falling short of expectations meet Tuesday night in Oakland when Golden State hosts New Orleans. The Hornets are last in the Western Conference, one game behind Sacramento. They need a win tonight and at Houston on Thursday and two losses by the Kings to avoid the cellar. Golden State has been decimated by injuries in coach Mark Jackson’s first season, and has started four rookies the past five games. Rookie Charles Jenkins had 24 points and nine assists to rally the Warriors from 21 down for a 93-88 victory over Minnesota on Sunday.

The Warriors’ huge rally ended an eight-game losing streak and fellow New Yorker Jackson was pleased with Jenkins. “He's a tough New York City kid,” Jackson said. “A tough, hard-nosed kid who has no quit. Totally competes, gets after it. He was banged up, bruised up, battered up, but found a way to gut out a big-time performance.” They could use more of that since the Warriors are just 5-11 in games decided by three points or fewer.

Eric Gordon led the Hornets with 17 points on 4-for-13 shooting but also had six turnovers in his first game against the Clippers since the Chris Paul trade. Gordon has missed 55 games this season after knee surgery and it no doubt impacted the Hornets’ record. “All I can do is look forward to trying to win,” Gordon said. “One thing I wanted to create is that I can help this team win games whoever is on the court.”

Golden State is 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings.

          Pick: Warriors

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    STREAKING

                    Matt Cain, San Francisco Giants

                    1-0, 1.88 ERA

It’s hard to pitch better than the 27-year-old right-hander has in his last two outings. He’s thrown 18 scoreless innings while facing just three batters over the minimum. For the season, batters are hitting .114 against Cain, who gets the Reds on Tuesday.

                    Mike Minor, Atlanta Braves
                    2-1, 3.10 ERA

The 24-year-old lefty has allowed one run over his last 15 1/3 innings, and his strikeout-to-walk ratio this year is a sterling 19:5. The league is hitting .194 against him. Minor opened the spring by saying he’d prefer a trade if he wasn’t in the rotation. Now he’s backing up his words.

                    SLUMPING

                    Ervin Santana, Los Angeles Angels
                    0-3, 6.75 ERA

Santana has been remarkably consistent – allowing two homers in each of his three starts. The 29-year-old right-hander did go seven innings in his last outing, but when the light-hitting A’s light you up for two dingers and four earned runs, it’s not something to be proud of.

                    Adam Wainwright, St. Louis Cardinals
                    0-3, 9.88 ERA

The former ace’s return from Tommy John surgery has not gone well. His velocity is down, and he’s surrendered five homers in 13 2/3 innings of work. Batters are hitting .310 against him. It’s too early to panic, but not to fade him.

Seattle Mariners at Detroit Tigers (-180, 8.5)

The Tigers had a disappointing series over the weekend, dropping three of four to one of the teams they figure to be battling in October -- the Rangers. Especially disappointing was an extra-inning loss on Sunday in which the winning run crossed on a squeeze play that replays revealed should have been a foul ball. The Mariners had an even worse weekend, getting swept at home by the White Sox and enduring Philip Humber’s perfect game on Saturday afternoon.

The Mariners were among the worst teams in the majors last season but did manage to have some success against the Tigers, winning the season series 6-4. They averaged a robust 5.4 runs in the 10 games while holding Detroit to 3.7.

Seattle starter Jason Vargas is coming off his strongest outing of the season, a seven-inning effort against Cleveland in which he allowed one run on four hits while striking out seven.

Seattle's Justin Smoak (hamstring) got the day off Sunday but should be available for Tuesday

The Tigers have been struggling at the plate since their hot start. A tough weekend has dropped their team average down to .246. Leadoff hitter Austin Jackson is in a 2-for-27 slump.

                    Pick: Mariners

Washington Nationals at San Diego Padres (110, 6.5)

The Nationals are off to their best start since moving from Montreal and seek to continue their solid play when they open a three-game series at San Diego on Tuesday. Washington is 6-2 in one-run games.

Washington starter Gio Gonzalez has hurled seven innings of two-hit shutout ball in each of his last two starts and will be well-rested after Sunday’s postponement.

The Padres have their first two-game win streak of the season after beating the Phillies Saturday and Sunday. San Diego scored 11 runs in those wins after scoring just eight runs over their previous four contests. Catcher Nick Hundley homered and had a career-best four RBIs on Sunday.

Padres starter Clayton Richard Richard has allowed 16 runs (12 earned) in his last two starts and has given up four homers in 18 1/3 innings.

Washington’s Ian Desmond has two homers in 12 career at-bats against Richard.

                    Pick: Nationals
