Sunday's betting tips: Amare's return affecting Melo

    Weather to watch

A 16-mph wind will be blowing in from left when the Cubs host the Reds on a cloudy Sunday. There’s a 20 percent chance of rain, and temperatures will be in the low 50s.

    Who’s hot

NBA: Golden State is 12-3 ATS in its last 15 road games.

NBA: The Hornets are 7-1 ATS in their last eight games.

NHL: Pittsburgh is 9-4 in its last 13 games in Philadelphia.

MLB: The White Sox are 5-0 in John Danks’ last five starts vs. Seattle.

MLB: The D-Backs are 7-2 in Ian Kennedy’s last nine home starts vs. winning teams.

    Who’s not

NBA: The Lakers are 3-13 ATS in their last 16 games playing on one day’s rest.

NBA: Sacramento is 0-6 ATS in their six games playing on one day’s rest.

NHL: The over is 2-7-3 in the last 12 Kings-Canucks games.

MLB: The Twins are 2-6 in Nelson Liriano’s last eight road starts.

MLB: The Angels are 0-5 in Dan Haren’s last five starts on grass.

    Key stat

23 – That’s how many first-period goals the Flyers and Penguins have combined to score, most in NHL history through the first five games of a playoff series. The record of 25 was set by Chicago and Edmonton in 1985.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Nicklas Grossman, arguably the Flyers’ top defenseman, missed Game 5 with a concussion and is doubtful to play again in the series, which resumes Sunday in Philly. Grossmann took first-period hits from the Tyler Kennedy and Evgeni Malkin in the Flyers’ 10-3 loss to the Penguins on Wednesday. He sat out the third period, then was replaced by Erik Gustafsson on Friday.

    Games of the day

Pittsburgh Penguins at Philadelphia Flyers (115, 7)

Oklahoma City Thunder at Los Angeles Lakers (1, 200)

    Notable quotable

"We're in this together. We worked hard all year to be in this position. Right now, I am going to do the best I can to be ready in case I'm needed. I'm 100 percent behind Cory and my teammates." – Vancouver goalie Roberto Luongo, who is expected to be on the bench again for Sunday’s Game 5 as Cory Schneider makes his third straight start. There is speculation that Luongo, the best goalie in franchise history, already has played his last game as a Canuck.

    Tips and notes

Despite first baseman Ike Davis’ struggles, the Mets don’t plan to move him out of the cleanup spot. Davis is hitting an abominable .148 (8 for 54) with three homers and seven RBIs. ''We need him,'' manager Terry Collins said. “As I told him, I’d move him and let him relax but I don’t have anyone else I can put in that spot right now either… I think eventually and very soon, he’s going to be doing some damage.'' Davis went 1 for 4 with an RBI in New York's 5-4 win over San Francisco on Saturday.

Knicks forward Amare Stoudemire will play his second game since returning from a back injury when New York visits Atlanta on Sunday. On Friday against Cleveland, Stoudemire played 27 minutes, getting 15 points and four blocks. "As the game went on, I felt more comfortable," said Stoudemire. "It’s just muscle memory." But Carmelo Anthony didn’t adjust well to Stoudemire’s return, scoring 12 on 5-of-13 shooting in the loss to the Cavs. Melo had been on a tear over the previous 13 games without Stoudemire. The Knicks went 9-4 in that span.

Ryan Dempster, whose 1.33 ERA ranks eighth in the NL, won’t make his scheduled Sunday start against the Reds: he was put on the DL with a quad injury. Randy Wells was called up from AAA Iowa to take Dempster’s place. Dempster’s injury is just the latest blow to the reeling Cubs, who placed reliever Kerry Woods on the DL Friday with a sore right shoulder.

      Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Coming into Saturday's play, the six players who had knocked in highest percentage of baserunners during their AB's (minimum 20 PA).......

      6) Jack Hannahan, Clev 10-32, 31.3%

      5) Luke Scott, TB 11-34, 32.4%

      4) Matt Kemp, LA 12-37, 32.4%

      3) AJ Pierzyski, CWS 9-27, 33.4%

      2) Andre Ethier, LA 15-43 34.9%

      1) Matt Carpenter, StL 10-28, 35.7%

      ****************

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Summing up a strange sports Saturday......

      13) Congrats to Philip Humber, the #5 starter for the White Sox, who threw the 21st perfect game in MLB history in Seattle Saturday. He got 27 outs on 96 pitches: five grounders, 13 fly balls, nine strikeouts. Well done.

      12) Not so well done was the relief pitching in Boston, where six different arsonists combined to allow 14 runs on 12 hits in three agonizingly long innings. How happy was Terry Francona watching this debacle?

      11) Seriously, Bobby Valentine struts around like he's Abner Doubleday or something, but Boston has been outscored 46-17 in five games this week, since Valentine stupidly called out Kevin Youkilis for no apparent reason. New closer Aceves has faced 19 men; 10 reached base, 8 of them scored.

      10) Which brings us to headlines on the front page, the news side, of New York Post Saturday: 100 YEARS OF KICKING ASS, referring to Fenway Park being 100 years old, while the Red Sox were worse than the Bronx Bombers most of that time. Not sure what they're thinking about, putting that on the front page, but it just seems childish to me, something an idiot would post on some Internet message board.

      9) Speaking of Abner Doubleday, he had to be turning over in his grave near the end of the Giant-Met game Saturday, where both teams set the game back a ways, with misplay after misplay. Giants lost when their catcher threw a ball away down the rightfield line, after they tied the game when the Mets butchered the simplest of popups in short centerfield. Mets also had two guys thrown out on bases in bottom of 8th, when they had legit chance to blow the game open. Win for the Mets, but they were very sloppy.

      8) Anyone know how much it cost the greedy bastards at Gulf Oil for that giant ad on the green monster at Fenway? No wonder gas is $4.09 a gallon.

      7) Too bad there isn't a rule where a GM like Theo Epstein has to take the responsibility for the Carl Crawford contract, one of the worst in baseball history so far, and send Crawford to the Cubs with Epstein. Guy makes $20M a year and he doesn't play; when he played LY, he was awful.

      6) Can someone explain to me why Games 5-6 of Boston-Washington series in the NHL playoffs are on consecutive days, especially when teams travel before Game 6? Congrats to St Louis Blues, who won their first playoff series since 2002. All five games in Chicago-Phoenix series went OT.

      5) I'm told there have been athletes who had Tommy John surgery without being injured, because they believe it makes your arm stronger in long run. If thats true, its more than a little scary.

      4) They honored the 1972 World Champion A's in Oakland Saturday night, my boyhood heroes. Vida Blue-Dick Green-Joe Rudi-Ken Holtzman-Dave Duncan-Gene Tenace-Rollie Fingers-Bert Campaneris and a bunch more were there. Brought back awful lot of good memories.

      3) Was ironic seeing Dick Green in Oakland Saturday night, after watching Bobby Valentine's rough day in Boston; Valentine was a promising player until he broke his leg in Anaheim, trying to pull a home run back in the park at the Big A, a ball hit by a second baseman named Dick Green.

      2) Did you know that in 1972, the year before the DH, Oakland carried as many as four 2Bs and would pinch-hit for them every time they came up, because Green hurt his back and missed a good chunk of that season? Other guys were awful hitters-- Ted Kubiak/Tim Cullen/Larry Brown/Marty Martinez/Dal Maxvill. It was an interesting time, for sure.

      1) Have to check EBay later this week and see if I can get me one of those Rollie Fingers bobbleheads they gave away Saturday in Oakland.

NASCAR betting: STP 400 preview and picks

NASCAR heads to America’s heartland this Sunday for the STP 400 at the 1.5-mile Kansas Speedway.

Forty-three race teams hope to win, but one team heads west aiming to end a winless streak and has perhaps a little more motivation than the rest.

It’s been 13 races since Hendrick Motorsports last visited Victory Lane. While that may not seem like a long stretch, for NASCAR’s powerhouse team it’s a winless drought that is out of character. The only other time Hendrick teams went this long without a win was between 2002 and 2003, when they went 15 races without a checkered flag.

The last time a Hendrick team tasted victory was last October and that win happened to come at Kansas. The driver who won that race is this week’s favorite, Jimmie Johnson. Johnson has had a decent season thus far, with three Top-5 finishes. He also came in second at Texas last week, another 1.5-mile track. Johnson seems poised to lead Hendrick to its 200th victory.

With two wins, a second-place showing and two Top-10 finishes in the last five races at Kansas, Johnson is the driver to beat this week.

“I like the options that Kansas Speedway provides, we can run anywhere,” Johnson said. “It has just been a strong track for me through the years. It is a lot like Chicago which is another real strong track for me. There are just certain tracks that just kind of click. Kansas has been one of those for me.”

Like Johnson, Greg Biffle has two wins at Kansas. He’s also coming off a win at Texas last week - his first victory since 2010. Biffle was on the pole at Kansas last fall and has one of his two wins along with two Top 5s and two Top 10s in the last five races. He’s on a roll and that could continue Sunday.

Brad Keselowski is the defending winner of this race. He’s looking to rebound from a disastrous outing at Texas last week due to mechanical issues. Keselowski followed his spring win here with a third-place finish in the fall and could easily score his second win of 2012.

“A win and a third-place finish is about as good as it gets,” crew chief Paul Wolfe said. “Our focus, as it was last fall, will be on qualifying. Even though we won the spring race from the 25th position, track position is very important. Once we got Brad out front in that race, it was almost like we gave him a completely different Miller Lite Dodge. If we can qualify up front, I'm confident that Brad can keep the car up there all day and we can be there at the end."

        Head-to-head

Clint Bowyer vs. Carl Edwards: Both drivers consider Kansas their home track but neither has won here. Bowyer hails from Emporia, Kansas. Edwards comes from nearby Columbia, Missouri. Both have been competitive this season, but lack the momentum to be favorites this week. Edwards was fifth in this race last year, Bowyer 18th. Look for it to shake out that way, as Edwards should finish ahead of Bowyer Sunday.

Tony Stewart vs. Ryan Newman: The Stewart-Haas Racing duo has won this season. Both have had success at Kansas, and Stewart could certainly step up Sunday. However, for the last few weeks, the team has struggled. Until they can find what it is they are lacking, wins may be hard to come by. This Sunday though, look for Stewart, who has a slightly better record here, to finish ahead of Newman.

        Bottom Line

Two drivers have won from the pole: Joe Nemechek in 2004 and Jimmie Johnson in 2008. The furthest back in the field that race winner started was 25th, by Brad Keselowski last season.

        Interesting fact

Only two active drivers with more than four starts have averaged a Top-10 finish at Kansas: Greg Biffle (8.2) and Jimmie Johnson (8.3).

        Favorites

        Jimmie Johnson (+600)
        Greg Biffle (+800)
        Brad Keselowski (+1,200)

NHL Playoffs on NBC: What bettors need to know
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Penguins at Philadelphia Flyers (110, 7)

The most intriguing first-round series lived to see another day after the Penguins won Game 5 at home by using a little defense, of all things. Just when you thought neither team had a defense, suddenly it rears its head, creating what could be a Sunday matinee to remember.

          Jordan rules
Often injured and often forgotten among Pittsburgh's slew of stars, Jordan Staal has risen to the top in this series. Evgeni Malkin? Sidney Crosby? Both have turned the corner during the Penguins' rally.

But among the many things that are hard to believe in this matchup is the fact that Staal has six goals. On Friday, in Pittsburgh's 3-2 home win, he had one tally, one assist, was a plus-2 and gobbled up 19:22 of ice time on 26 shifts.

Staal, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound power forward who is a matchup nightmare for opponents, has nine points in the series. And with a battle that has featured so many goals and so many odd-man rushes, it's impressive for anyone to be a plus player at this point. Staal is a plus-4.

          A little help up front
Lost in all of the hype surrounding Pittsburgh's comeback is that Philadelphia's James van Riemsdyk returned to action in the Flyers' Game 5 loss. Van Riemsdyk, who has battled several injuries this season and even had to stomach trade rumors a year after being Philadelphia's best player last postseason, wasn’t exactly given free rein on Friday night. He took just 11 shifts, covering 7:31 of ice time.

But he was back in a series in which the Flyers might need every ounce of help they can get. Van Riemsdyk disappointed fans this season, posting 11 goals and 24 points. But the upside is still clearly there for the former first-round pick.

After all, Van Riemsdyk had seven goals and 70 shots in two series last season. If he can recapture that magic in this series, Philadelphia may finally advance.

          A Fleury flurry
At some point, the goaltender who went 42-17-4 with a .913 save percentage and a 2.36 GAA was going to surface, right? Marc-Andre Fleury led Pittsburgh to two Stanley Cup Finals and won one, so the talent has always been there.

In the last two games -- not coincidentally both Pittsburgh wins -- Fleury has allowed just five goals. He made key stops in the third period of Game 5 as the Flyers buzzed. He's made 46 saves in those six periods and despite all the offense in front of him, Fleury is clearly going to be the make-or-break player who either wins or loses this series for the Penguins.

The numbers are still stomach-churning. Even with the last two wins, he still has a 4.70 GAA in this series. But, it's Game 6 and he's still alive. That's all that matters.

          History
The Flyers have won four of their last five Sunday games. Even with the two-game win streak, Pittsburgh has lost six of its last eight playoff games. And the over is still on fire in this series, going 4-1 despite Friday's under.

Boston Bruins at Washington Capitals (N/A)

Hockey bettors have their first back-to-back set of games here, as Boston hosted Washington Saturday, only to jump back on the road and play again -- this time in Washington -- Sunday. The Capitals, who won 4-3 on Troy Brouwer's late goal Saturday, lead the series 3-2 and can close it out at the Verizon Center.

          Dennis not delivering
What a pleasant surprise Washington defenseman Dennis Wideman was this regular season. After bouncing around over the last three years -- Washington, Boston, Florida, back to Washington -- he has found a home with the Capitals and was fortunate enough to play in all 82 games.

He delivered along the way, scoring 11 goals and finishing with 46 points. Surely, he and the Capitals could live without the season-long minus-8, but he devoured quality minutes as Washington rallied late and made the postseason.

The playoffs have been a different story. He's been behind the play a bit against his former team and had nothing to show for his six shots heading into Game 5. But Wideman bounced back with an assist Saturday.

          Life of Brian
Boston general manager Peter Chiarelli was hopeful when he acquired Brian Rolston late in the regular season. A former Bruin returning to Boston, Rolston might be spurred on by a potential Stanley Cup run and help the club. Well, so far, so good.

Rolston, a 1991 first-round draft pick of the New Jersey Devils, was traded from the New York Islanders and he finished a ho-hum regular season with seven goals and 24 points. But he has turned it on a bit in the postseason. In Game 3, a 4-3 win for the Bruins, Rolston had a goal, two shots and two hits. However, Rolston was shut out in Games 4 and 5.

          Coach speak
The two coaches in this series, Boston's Claude Julien and Washington's Dale Hunter, have never faced each other in the postseason before, but you wouldn't know it by their words. With a quickness, they have developed a nice little rivalry of their own.

Hunter, known to take out a player or two back in his playing days, accused the Bruins of targeting Washington forward Nicklas Backstrom’s head.

But Julien didn't win the Stanley Cup last season by getting into head games with the opposition. So, he quickly tried to diffuse the situation when the Boston media tried to give him the bait.

"Coach, what do you think of Hunter's accusations?" "It's ludicrous," Julien said. "It's ridiculous."

Enough said. But certainly more than enough to fill a few newspaper columns in Washington and Boston.

          History
The Bruins have won six of their last seven road games, and the Capitals have lost five of their last seven Sunday games. The Bruins have gone over in eight of their last 11 games without a day’s rest. (8-2-1).

Ice picks: Sunday's best NHL bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Kings at Vancouver Canucks (-175, 5)

The Kings will get another crack at their first playoff series win since 2001 when they visit the Canucks for Game 5 of the Western Conference quarterfinals on Sunday. Los Angeles built the first 3-0 series lead in franchise history but failed to eliminate Vancouver at home on Wednesday. The Presidents' Trophy-winning Canucks welcomed Daniel Sedin back to the lineup Wednesday after a 12-game absence due to a concussion.

Many Kings are not happy about the three-day break between Games 4 and 5, but Jeff Carter is not among them. Carter missed time at the end of the regular season with an ankle injury but returned to the lineup for the start of the Vancouver series. After going three games without a point following a two-assist performance in the series opener, Carter is pleased to have more time to heal. "I think with the two days before the last game, and then the extra day here, it's probably not an ideal situation, but for myself personally and for some other guys around here that are a little banged up, it's nice to get a little extra rest," Carter said.

Cory Schneider is likely to make his third straight start for Vancouver, leaving Roberto Luongo on the bench again. Schneider praised Luongo's demeanor and approach to serving as backup. "He's been great to me and great to the team," Schneider said. "He's handled this extremely well. He hasn't said a word and he's been nothing but a true professional and the great guy that he is."

Much like Carter, Daniel Sedin must be happy to have had three days off. Sedin returned for Game 4 and notched an assist. "The fact we've got three days in between games here is going to permit Danny to get up to his speed," coach Alain Vigneault said.

It's a steep price, but the West’s top seed won’t see its season end at home.

          Pick: Canucks

Thunder at Lakers: What bettors need to know
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oklahoma City Thunder at Los Angeles Lakers (1, 200)

                THE STORY:
With just a few games left in the regular season slate, the Los Angeles Lakers and Oklahoma City Thunder are still fighting for position in the West. The Thunder sit one-half game behind the San Antonio Spurs for the top spot while the Lakers sit in third, one-half game ahead of the Los Angeles Clippers. Kobe Bryant’s return from a seven-game absence wasn't much help for Los Angeles in a blowout loss to the Spurs Friday.

                TV: 3:30 p.m. ABC

ABOUT THE THUNDER (46-17, 35-28 ATS): Oklahoma City is a game back of San Antonio in the loss column and sits on the wrong side of the tiebreaker, so the No. 1 seed is getting closer to a long shot with three games left. Sunday marks the final road contest for the Thunder, who own the best road record in the West at 21-11.

Oklahoma City has had a relatively easy slate in April, with only two of its last eight games against teams that have clinched playoff berths. Of course, the Thunder dropped both of those to the Clippers. They have yet to lose to the Lakers this season, taking a 100-85 decision at Staples Center on Feb. 23 and winning at home, 102-93, on March 29.

ABOUT THE LAKERS (40-24, 27-37 ATS): Los Angeles has missed two opportunities to help out the Thunder in the last week, dropping a 112-91 decision at home to San Antonio Tuesday and falling at the Spurs, 121-97, Friday. Bryant, who had sat out due to a left shin bruise, went 7 for 12 from the floor for 18 points in 29 minutes.

“I’m back now,” Bryant told reporters after the game. “It took me a half. The second half it felt like I was back in a good rhythm.”

In Bryant’s absence, Los Angeles had gotten strong play from Metta World Peace in addition to Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol. World Peace is averaging 16.3 points over the last nine games, up from his season average of 7.6.

                TRENDS:

                * Under is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
                * Favorite is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
                * Thunder are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 vs. NBA Pacific.
                * Lakers are 6-15 ATS in their last 21 games overall.

                BUZZER BEATERS:

                1. The Thunder have won in each of their last two trips to Staples Center

                2. Bryant has averaged 24.9 points in 55 career games against the Oklahoma City franchise.

                3. Kevin Durant is at the same 24.9 points in 16 career games against the Lakers.

                PREDICTION: Thunder 106, Lakers 97

Pick 'n' roll: Sunday's best NBA bets
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Knicks at Atlanta Hawks (-3.5, 191)

Carmelo Anthony scored a league-best 30.6 points in the 13 straight games Amare Stoudemire missed with a bulging disc, as the Knicks went 9-4. When Stoudemire returned Friday, Anthony looked out of sorts and shot 5 for 13 with four turnovers.

As Stoudemire works off the rust and Melo adjusts to fewer touches, New York could continue to struggle.

Now the Knicks visit Atlanta, which has won three straight, including a 97-92 home win over depleted Boston on Friday. Joe Johnson scored 30 on 11-of-18 shooting, but the Hawks played down to the level of the Celtics’ scrubs.

“We were just careless,” forward Josh Smith said. “When you get geared up to play a team with the high potential of Boston and you come out right before the game see that [their starters] are not going to play, I don’t know if it does something mentally to you but … it makes it unpredictable.”

Atlanta won’t have any trouble getting up for New York. And the Hawks are on the verge of clinching homecourt advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

The home team is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.

                  Pick: Hawks

Toronto Raptors at Detroit Pistons (-5, 187.5)

The Raptors have been blown out in their last two games by average of 23 points.

But the Pistons haven’t been any better. They’ve dropped seven of nine, including Thursday’s 91-80 loss to Minnesota in which they had a 1-for-20 shooting stretch in the first half.

Neither team has broken 90 points in its last two outings. The Pistons rank 28th in scoring, and the Raptors rank 27th. Toronto point guard Jose Calderon (10.5 ppg, 8.8 apg) is expected to remain sidelined with his eye injury.

The under is 8-3 in Toronto’s last 11 games.

                  Pick: Under

Sunday Night Baseball: Yankees at Red Sox
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox (115, 9.5)

The New York Yankees are simultaneously crushing the baseball and the spirit of the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees, who erased a 9-0 deficit and scored the game’s final 15 runs Saturday, send ace C.C. Sabathia to the mound Sunday night to try for a three-game sweep of reeling Boston. The Red Sox have lost five straight and were outscored 46-17 in the process, but facing Sabathia provides a glimmer of hope. Although he is 177-96 in his career, Sabathia is 7-9 against the Red Sox, including 3-4 at Fenway Park. The Yankees’ starting rotation is off to a slow start with an ERA of 5.84 – Sabathia’s is 5.59. But with 11 homers in their last three games, the Yanks' offense is providing plenty of support.

The Red Sox’ bullpen allowed 14 runs Saturday after Felix Doubront provided stability to the starting rotation with six solid innings. Daniel Bard, who has a 1.69 career ERA at Fenway Park, will try to keep the momentum going when he makes his third major league start. The Red Sox are 11-30 since Sept. 1, 2011.

                          TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, ESPN, ESPN3.com

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees LH C.C. Sabathia (1-0, 5.59 ERA) vs. Red Sox RH Daniel Bard (0-2, 4.63 ERA)

Sabathia earned his first victory in the Yankees’ 8-3 win over Minnesota on Tuesday. He didn’t allow a hit after the third inning and struck out seven in 7 1/3 innings. Sabathia pitched six innings in each of his first two starts at Baltimore and Tampa Bay. Boston’s roster is hitting .257 against Sabathia, with Mike Aviles 6-for-13 and David Ortiz 11-for-49 with two homers and 15 strikeouts.

Bard walked seven, including one with the bases loaded, in Monday’s 1-0 loss to Tampa Bay. He allowed four hits and struck out seven in 6 2/3 innings. Bard has pitched 24 innings in relief against New York, allowing 18 hits and 14 walks with 25 strikeouts and a 4.13 ERA. The Yankees’ roster is batting .243 against Bard. Curtis Granderson has fared well (4-for-7, homer) while Robinson Cano is 0-for-8.
