Verlander & Tigers Look To Cool Texas Rangers

Two of Saturday's best pitching matchups are early-afternoon contests, while three more staff aces will take the mound just as the sun begins to drop below the horizon.

We start the proceedings in Detroit where the Tigers and Texas Rangers continue their early-season Showdown in Motown. Game 3 of the 4-game series is slated for a 1:05 p.m. (ET) first pitch from Justin Verlander who will be opposed by the Rangers' Neftali Feliz.

Texas drew first blood Thursday with a 10-3 win as -130 chalk behind Yu Darvish's arm and Mike Napoli's bat. Napoli clubbed his fifth home run in four games and was hitting .400 on the road trip entering Friday's contest. That game pitted Matt Harrison and Rick Porcello, and was still pending with the MLB odds starting as a pick before drifting in the Tigers' favor.

If there's a pitcher who can cool the red-hot Texas sticks, it's Verlander. He's limited the Rangers to a .170 batting average while striking out 33 in 27 innings over his last four regular season assignments vs. Texas (Detroit 3-1), and is off to another fine start to this campaign with 23 K's and just 13 hits allowed in his first 25-1/3 frames.

Feliz is also looking good as he transitions from being Texas' closer into the rotation. He did struggle a bit the last time out at Minnesota (5 IP, 3 ER), but a strong bullpen and late rally from the bats bailed him out to get the dubya for the Rangers. Feliz has made three career relief appearances at Comerica, picking up the save each time without allowing a run.

Fish & Nats Continue Series In DC
Stephen Strasburg looks to improve his record to 3-0 and keep Washington on top of the NL East when the Nationals host the Miami Marlins in a 1:05 p.m. (ET) matinee. Miami counters with Anibal Sanchez who is seeking his second win of the campaign.

Washington opened the weekend with a 1.5-game lead over Atlanta in the division; Miami was fourth, 2.5-games back. The Nats were -130 favorites in Friday's series opener that featured Carlos Zambrano pitching for the visitors and Ross Detwiler for the home squad.

The Nationals have won all three of Strasburg's starts while the young righty has compiled a 1.42 ERA with 19 K's in 19 innings. He saw the Marlins twice last September after coming back from Tommy John surgery, and combined for 12 innings of 5-hit, 1-run, 13-K work with Washington splitting the two decisions.

Sanchez didn't figure into the decision his last time out (April 15), a game that went to the 11th before Miami earned the win. The Venezuelan has been very tough on the Nats the past few seasons with a 1.31 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and the Marlins 7-3 in his 10 starts (62 IP).

Three Aces Set To Deal At Dusk
Big chalk bettors should have several choices to consider Saturday night when a trio of No. 1 hurlers take to the mound. It starts in Houston where Clayton Kershaw and the Los Angeles Dodgers go up against Kyle Weiland and the Astros (7:05 p.m. ET).

Los Angeles avoided being swept in Milwaukee with a 4-3 win on Thursday as Matt Kemp pounded his seventh homer and drove in runs 17 and 18 to remain on fire in the early going. The Dodgers were laying -130 for Friday's series opener in a matchup of lefties, Ted Lilly and JA Happ.

Kershaw hasn't been in the winner's circle himself this season, but all three of his starts have gone into the win column for LA. He's had mixed results in three career outings at Minute Maid Park where the Dodgers are 1-2 and Kershaw sports a 5.62 ERA. Weiland's first two starts for the Astros both ended in defeat for the Notre Dame alum, and this will be his cherry against the Dodgers.

An 8:35 p.m. (ET) contest at Petco Park finds Roy Halladay on the mound for the Philadelphia Phillies against Cory Luebke and the San Diego Padres.

Halladay heads to the bump looking for his fourth consecutive win to begin the season as well as his fourth straight triumph vs. the Padres. His only appearance at Petco was a gem just about a year ago, coming within an out of a complete game with 14 strikeouts in Philly's 3-1 victory. Luebke is coming off a strong showing at Coors Field this past Monday (7 IP, 1 ER), a 7-1 win over the Colorado Rockies as a +110 underdog.

Last but not least, Jered Weaver and the Los Angeles Angels host the Baltimore Orioles who send Jake Arrieta to the mound for Saturday's 9:05 p.m. (ET) first pitch. Weaver had a hiccup on the road in Minnesota 10 days ago, but has continued his prowess in Anaheim with 14-2/3 scoreless innings at home in a pair of Halos victories. The Angels are 16-4 in Weaver's last 20 Big A assignments with his ERA a sparkling 1.81 in almost 149 innings.

Arrieta will be making his first career appearance at Angel Stadium and last faced the Halos in an Aug. 2010 start at Camden Yards. He didn't have a decision (7-2/3 IP, 2 ER) in the game that eventually went the Orioles' way, 5-4.

Red Sox try to end 4-game skid Saturday

        NEW YORK YANKEES (8-6)

        at BOSTON RED SOX (4-9)

First pitch: Saturday, 4:05 p.m. EDT
Line: Boston -115, New York +105, Total: 11

The slumping Red Sox look to end a four-game losing skid when they host the Yankees for the middle game of a three-game series on Saturday afternoon.

The Yankees flexed their muscles in the series opener with a season-high five home runs -- two by Eric Chavez -- and coasted to a 6-2 victory. New York now has 16 homers since Sunday and Boston has given up 12 HR in the past three games. Although the Red Sox have been outscored 31-8 during the four-game skid, this lineup is just too potent to stay quiet any longer. They should be able to get to Yankees starter Freddy Garcia who allowed 11 runs in 19 innings against Boston last year, and has also been roughed up so far this season (6.97 ERA). Since 1997, the Sox are 94-44 (.681, +33.1 Units) at home after scoring three runs or less in two straight games. The pick here is for BOSTON to end its long win drought with a much-needed victory.

This three-star FoxSheets trend expects the Red Sox to even the series on Saturday:

Play Against - Road teams (N.Y. YANKEES) - excellent fielding team - averaging <=0.5 errors/game on the season, after hitting 3 or more home runs in 2 consecutive games. (52-26 since 1997.) (66.7%, +29 units. Rating = 3*).

Garcia (0-1, 6.97 ERA, 1.55 WHIP) is 9-4 with a 4.45 ERA in his long career against Boston (119.1 IP), but was smacked around by the Sox last year, allowing 11 runs (10 earned), 22 hits and 10 walks in just 19 innings (4.74 ERA, 1.68 WHIP). He’s only started at Fenway Park twice since 2005, getting a pair of no-decisions. In two starts this season, Garcia has been extremely hittable (.317 BA). After allowing four runs (three earned) in 4.2 innings in his 2012 opener in Baltimore, he was even worse at home against the Twins’ weak lineup last Monday. He surrendered five runs and nine hits in 5.2 innings, but he did strike out five with no walks. SS Mike Aviles (8-for-14) and DH David Ortiz (.856 OPS) have enjoyed facing Garcia in the past, but 3B Kevin Youkilis (3-for-16, 5 K) and 1B Adrian Gonzalez (2-for-12, 2 K) have struggled against the 35-year-old right-hander.

Red Sox lefty Felix Doubront (0-0, 5.40 ERA, 1.70 WHIP) hasn’t faced the Yankees much in his brief career, but he has limited them to a .188 BA (3-for-16) with six strikeouts and just one walk. The 24-year-old also showed some signs of greatness in his last outing on Sunday against the Rays. Although he allowed four runs in five innings, he also fanned seven batters and walked just one. The Yankees have had good success against left-handed pitching this year (.297 BA/.371 OBP/.400 SLG), but just three of their 24 homers in 2012 have come off southpaws.

Struggling Bulls host Dallas on Saturday night

                DALLAS MAVERICKS (36-28)

                at CHICAGO BULLS (47-16)

                Tip-off: Saturday, 8:05 p.m. ET
                Line: Chicago -6½, Total: 181½

Chicago continues its limp to the regular-season finish line when it hosts Dallas on Saturday night.

The Bulls actually still have work to do to clinch the No. 1 seed in the East, and they’ll probably be without reigning MVP Derrick Rose (foot) again. The Mavs are traveling from Dallas after a 10-point home win (but no cover) over Golden State on Friday. Can the Bulls win big on Saturday night? For the answer, connect to the NBA Three-at-Three Pass for ATS picks covering all the marquee NBA games each day. The NBA Pass is a sizzling 33-17-1 ATS (66%) in April, including a tremendous 17-6-1 ATS (74%) since April 12.

The aging Mavs won’t exactly be fresh coming into this game. They were underwhelming in a 104-94 win over Golden State on Friday, shooting just 3-for-19 from three, but simply overpowering a short-handed Warriors front line (a 52-to-35 rebounding edge). PF Dirk Nowitzki (21.7 PPG) coasted through 27 minutes, scoring 16 points on 7-for-14 FG but getting to the line for just two shots. Still, he’s averaging 27.7 PPG over the past six games. Sixth man Jason Terry (15.1 PPG) had been shooting well going into Friday, but scored just nine points on 4-of-12 FG and 1-for-8 from three in the win. And PG Jason Kidd (6.2 PPG, 5.5 APG) was scoreless, missing all three of his shots, over 22 minutes.

PG Delonte West (9.6 PPG) continued on his hot streak, scoring 16 points on 5-for-10 FG. He’s now averaging 16.8 PPG on 57.6% FG over his past five games. And SG Vince Carter (10.1 PPG) has shown rare aggressiveness of late. He’s averaging 20.0 PPG over his past three games despite shooting just 42.9% FG. That’s because he’s gotten to the line for 20 free throws over those games, hitting 19. Prior to Monday, he was getting to the line for just 1.6 FT attempts per game. The FoxSheets provide this four-star trend siding with the Mavericks:

DALLAS is 20-3 ATS (87.0%, +16.7 Units) off 2 or more consecutive home wins over the last 2 seasons. The average score was DALLAS 99.3, OPPONENT 92.5 - (Rating = 4*).

Chicago has adjusted fairly well to life without Rose (22.5 PPG, 7.9 APG), who has missed 26 games so far this year and was reportedly still limping on Friday. The Bulls are a respectable 17-9 SU and 14-12 ATS without him this season, though one of those losses came Thursday at Miami, when they mustered just 72 points in an 83-72 loss. The Bulls did get SF Luol Deng (15.3 PPG) back in that game, though he scored just 11 points on 5-for-15 FG and missed all four of his threes.

The big concern with Rose out is the erratic play of back-up PG C.J. Watson (10.1 PPG, 4.0 APG). Watson has played well enough at times that, when Rose was back in the lineup but struggling a week ago, Tom Thibodeau let Watson close out an overtime win over the Heat at home. But more often Watson has performed at a D-League caliber level. Over his past nine starts, Watson is averaging 8.2 PPG on 29.4% FG, 4.8 APG and 2.8 TOPG. He was torched in Miami on Thursday, scoring two points and missing all three of his field goal attempts, with four assists and three turnovers in 20 minutes. Chicago turned to John Lucas (7.2 PPG) in that game, though he was inefficient himself, scoring 16 points on 16 shots.

SG Richard Hamilton (11.7 PPG) had back-to-back 22-point games, against bottom-feeders Washington and Charlotte, before being held to just six points in the Miami loss. Chicago has gotten strong production out of C Joakim Noah (10.1 PPG, 9.7 RPG) lately. Noah had 15 points on 5-for-5 FG and 10 rebounds in the Miami loss. He’s averaging 13.3 PPG on 63.6% FG, 10.8 RPG and 2.5 BPG over his past four contests. The FoxSheets have a three-star trend favoring the Bulls:

Play On - Favorites of 3.5 to 9.5 points (CHICAGO) - a very good team (>=+7 PPG differential) against an average team (+/- 3 PPG differential), after a combined score of 175 points or less 2 straight games. (31-9 since 1996.) (77.5%, +21.1 units. Rating = 3*).

Dallas Mavericks Visit Chicago Bulls Saturday

Saturday will prove to be the most important day of the season for several NBA playoff hopefuls.

An early tilt in Phoenix (5:30 p.m. ET) could impact no less than five clubs before day’s end. Denver (34-28) comes to town as the Western Conference No. 7 seed trailing Dallas by only one game in the win column, and leads both Phoenix and Utah by a 1.5-games for the No. 8 seed. Phoenix and Utah are tied for the No. 8 seed but, by virtue of a tiebreaker, Phoenix would get in and Utah would not.

Bettors backing the Suns since the All-Star break have cashed 20 of 29, including 14-4 against the number in their last 18 at US Airways Center. Phoenix head coach Alvin Gentry has maintained his 10 player rotation but has steadily increased his starter’s minutes over the last few games as the Suns enter this crucial season ending stretch.

After facing Denver on Saturday, the Suns have a couple of days off before traveling to Utah on Tuesday to face the Jazz in what is shaping up to be a playoff play-in game. “Denver on the road” has been music to the ears of NBA bettors all season long; the Nuggets are now 19-11 against the spread when they play away from home.

Denver is 2-0 straight up and against the spread vs. Phoenix this season, winning by 17 and six points respectively. Both games fell 'under' the posted totals.

The Dallas Mavericks play their second game is as many nights Saturday at Chicago's United Center vs. the Eastern Conference-leading Bulls. The reigning NBA champions play the 'tanking' Golden State Warriors on Friday, and based on the Warriors' recent play, Dallas should be able to win and rest some key players in preparation for the Bulls. Dallas is coming off a grueling stretch of games that include two overtime losses on consecutive days to the Lakers and the Jazz, both on the road.

The Bulls are trying to hold off the hard-charging Miami Heat, who now only trail Chicago by a game and a half with three games remaining for Chicago and four games remaining for Miami. Derrick Rose is listed as doubtful to play Saturday vs. Dallas, a situation Chicago has become accustomed to for 25+ games this season.

Do not underestimate the value of the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference. Chicago, 24-7 at home, only trail the Heat, 27-4 at the home this season, for the best home-court mark in the East.

This will be the first meeting between Chicago and Dallas this season. To no one’s surprise, Dirk Nowitzki has delivered for the Mavericks down the stretch and will again prove to be a very tough cover Saturday in Chicago.

With just two games remaining after their Saturday showdown vs. 'da Bulls, Dallas is staring at a first-round playoff matchup vs. the very team they swept out of last year’s NBA playoffs...yep, those Los Angeles Lakers.
