Saturday's Betting tips: Kemp going off in L.A.

    Who’s hot

NBA: The Pacers are 5-0 ATS in their last five overall and 4-0 ATS in their last four against the Eastern Conference

NBA: The Heat are 4-1 ATS in their last five overall and the under is 5-1 in their last six overall.

NHL: The Coyotes are 8-1 in their last nine overall.

NHL: The Devils are 8-2 in their last 10 overall.

MLB: The Dodgers are 5-1 in Clayton Kershaw's last six road starts.

MLB: The Rangers are 6-0 in their last six road games.

    Who’s not

NBA: The Rockets are 0-6 ATS in their last six overall and 0-4 ATS in their last four home games.

NBA: The Grizzlies are 1-5 ATS in their last six overall.

NHL: The Senators are 3-13 in their last 16 playoff games as underdogs.

NHL: The over is 1-5-1 in the last seven meetings between St. Louis and San Jose.

MLB: The Padres are 1-7 in their last eight overall.

MLB: The Cubs are 0-6 in their last six overall and 1-4 in their last five home games.

    Key stat

8 – Number of home runs belted by the Los Angeles Dodgers' Matt Kemp through 14 games this season. Kemp has homered in each of the first two games of the current series in Houston and he has six dingers in his last seven outings. The outfielder, who finished runner-up in National League MVP voting last year, is hitting .481 with 20 RBIs and 16 runs scored.

    Injuries that shouldn’t be overlooked

Are the Golden State Warriors going to be able to field a team on Saturday when they visit Houston? Andrew Bogut has been hurt since being acquired, David Lee is out for the season, and Stephen Curry has not played in a month. Now, both Nate Robinson (hamstring) and Andris Biedrins (concussion) are listed as questionable.

The Rockets have a few issues of their own. Kevin Martin (shoulder) and Marcus Camby (back) are questionable for Saturday. Houston is an overwhelming -12.5 favorite.

    Biggest games on the slate

Dallas Mavericks at Chicago Bulls (N/A)

Washington Capitals at Boston Bruins (-180, 5)

Texas Rangers at Detroit Tigers (-151, 7)

    Notable quotable

“We knew they would be a very hungry team and they proved that. You knew Marty (Martin Brodeur) would have a bounce-back game. There would be no easy goals. They needed to be desperate and they were. They didn’t want to go down 3-1. It’s anyone’s series." -- Florida Panthers' ’’ goalie Scott Clemmensen, who gave up four goals in his first postseason start in Game 4 against the New Jersey Devils (New Jesey won 4-0). The series is tied at two apiece heading back to Florida on Saturday.

    Tips and notes

LeBron James has led the Miami Heat in scoring in each of the past 12 games. He may do it again on Saturday because Chris Bosh (lower body) is questionable for Saturday's home date with Washington. Ronny Turiaf (hamstring) is also questionable. James has scored at least 27 points in each of his last four outings and has double-doubles in two of those contests.

Don't look now, but the Atlanta Braves are leading the entire major leagues in runs scored. Atlanta, almost always led by its pitching and expected to do the same once again this season, has crossed the plate 84 times in 14 games. No other team has reached the 80-run mark. The Braves have scored a ridiculous 42 runs in their last four games. They are looking to win the first three games of a series at Arizona on Saturday.

Yes the games have been close (in fact, all four have gone to overtime), but the Blackhawks may be developing a mental block of some sort when it comes to facing the Coyotes. Phoenix leads the Western Conference quarterfinal series 3-1 and it also won the last three games of the regular-season series with Chicago. That means the Coyotes are 6-1 in their last seven overall against Chicago. They can advance to the conference semis with a win at home on Saturday.

      Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- NCAA wanted East regional semis/finals at Madison Square Garden next March, with that building turning 75 years old, but the dates aren’t available, so it looks like it’ll be at the Nets’ new arena in Brooklyn, or the Carrier Dome in Syracuse.

-- Nashville Predators are first team to advance in the NHL playoffs, as they sent the Red Wings home in five short games.

-- Penguins' 3-2 win over Philly makes the over 17-2-1 in Pittsburgh's last 20 games overall. Lot of pressure on the Flyers now to win Game 6.

-- Phillies have now won their last 13 games at Petco Park in San Diego.

-- Angels are 4-10, and already 7.5 games behind the Rangers.

-- St Francis PA fired its basketball coach this week, and quickly named the AD’s son as interim coach- he’s been an assistant there for the last 12 (dismal) years of Red Flash basketball. What do you think his chances of getting the permanent job are?

      ****************

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a spring weekend.......

      13) Celtics played their 12th game in 17 nights Friday; how did the NBA Players’ Union agree to this schedule? The product this season has been very poor. Teams like Charlotte and the Warriors appear to be tanking games. Bobcats are 4-14 AGAINST THE SPREAD in their last 18 games, (0-18 SU). Not good.

      12) CBSSports.com reports that last year in this country, 19 new golf courses opened, 158 closed, the 6th year in row more courses closed than opened. I always thought owning a driving range would be a fun job.

      11) Kids who get drafted by NFL teams cannot report for minicamps until their school has graduation that spring; Stanford’s calendar runs later than most schools, so Andrew Luck will miss some off-season time in Indianapolis. Curious to see if they start Luck right from the beginning.

By the way, lot of people think that horseshoes are lucky and Colts have horsehoes on their helmets, so it figures that Oliver Luck would play with them. You won't get lame humor like that on this website, though.

      10) Guy that owns the Orlando Magic is 86; interesting to see who he sides with in this Dwight Howard/Stan Van Gundy fiasco, or if he just lets both of them walk and starts over. Like we said before, if I owned the Magic, I’d hand Howard a clipboard, and tell him either you coach the team or shut up and listen to the guy that does coach it. Take your pick.

      9) Fenway Park turns 100 years old this week; some national scribe wrote how its still the nicest ballpark. Like hell it is; they do as good as they can do sprucing Fenway up, but its old and small and not nearly as nice as most of the new ballparks. If a ballpark has a retractable roof and a swimming pool (Phoenix/Miami) it has to be nicer than Fenway. Not even close.

      8) The defending Super Bowl champ has won its opener the next season 12 years in a row.

      7) Jets face four of LY’s top six defenses in first five weeks of the season; most of their primetime games are in the second half of the year. Think the networks want Tim Tebow starting in primetime?

      6) Charlie Casserly, the former Redskin/Texan GM, is very good on NFL Network; he has an odd voice, but is outspoken and knowledgeable. Figures to be a busy week on Channel 212, with the draft coming up Thursday.

      5) From the Tell Your Statistics to Shut Up Dept: Packers gave up the most yards of any NFL team LY. That’s how much that stat means, unless you put it in context.

      4) Cautionary note about Robert Griffin III: He played in same college offense as Kevin Kolb, who hasn’t had much NFL success so far.

      3) The Steelers throwback jerseys are unspeakably hideous. Horizontal black/gold stripes- they look like bumble bees who got caught committing a felony.

      2) Phoenix-Chicago series in NHL playoffs is first one since 1951 Stanley Cup finals to go OT in each of the first four games. Visiting team won three of those four.

      1) Want to win a bet? Only hole-in-one on a par 4 in PGA Tour history was Andrew Magee at the Phoenix Open in 1992, on a 332-yard hole, where the guys on the green were so surprised, the ball hit off one of their putters and rolled into the hole. One of the golfers on the green was Gary Nicklaus, Jack’s son.

Hockey Night In Canada: NHL Playoffs betting preview
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington Capitals at Boston Bruins (-180, 5)

        Series tied 2-2

This one may not have the flash and dash of the Penguins-Flyers series, but if you’re looking for pure, passionate playoff hockey, this is your matchup. Four games have been played. Each team has won two. And every tilt has been decided by one goal. You don’t get much better than that.

        A Braden boost

The Capitals, in the Alex Ovechkin Era, have long suffered with a lack of identity between the pipes. Goaltenders come and go, and without consistency in net, Washington’s never truly threatened for a title.

Perhaps Braden Holtby will solve all of that. For now, he’s just trying to beat the Bruins, and he’s on his way. In four games, he has made 148 saves and posted a 1.60 GAA. He also has a .953 save percentage, a 2-2 record, and it appears as if the Capitals are feeding off his progression. They are building momentum off his key saves and it’s almost as if he’s no longer viewed as a third stringer.

Outlasting the Stanley Cup champions in what might be a seven-game series could be too tall a task for Holtby. But he seems to have passed every other test so far. Nothing he does from here on in would surprise.

        Rich get richer

The playoffs are built for a player like Boston center Rich Peverley, an undrafted find that fits the Bruins' mold. He is, after all, a grinder; someone unafraid to take on any role that coach Claude Julien gives him. And along that way, Peverley has been a shining star in this series.

He scored his second goal of the postseason in Game 4, Boston's lone tally of the night, and has three blocks and 11 shots on net. Peverley had 11 goals and 42 points in the regular season and in Game 4, he was a plus-1 on 27 shifts, covering 21:44 of ice time.

        They like Laich

Ovechkin hasn't been burned for taking too many gambles and he'll take four points into Game 5. But forward Brooks Laich has been with him step for step, and he’s a prime reason why the Capitals have this series knotted.

Laich, a left-handed shot at the center position, has one goal and four points, which is tied with Ovechkin for the team lead. But Laich plays a sound two-way game, as well, and that has risen to the surface. He has four hits and seven blocked shots and is third on the team with a plus-2 rating.

        History

Washington has won its last five Saturday games, including Game 2 of this series. Boston has won eight of its last 11 when playing on one day's rest. The under is 3-1 so far in this series.

Ottawa Senators at New York Rangers (-170, 5)

        Series tied 2-2

Maybe there’s something to the regular season, after all. The Senators gave the Rangers fits before the playoffs began, and there has been some carryover into the postseason. Ottawa has kept up with New York and glides into Manhattan with confidence.

        All about Anton

The postseason is often a time to find someone new - someone unexpected to lift a team out of adversity. And maybe for the high-flying Rangers, that will be defenseman Anton Stralman.

Stralman opened the scoring in Game 4 with a power-play goal. It was his second of the series and he now has three points, eight blocked shots and is a plus-2.

He was quiet in the regular season, though he made the most of his opportunities. He finished with two goals and 18 points, but the final rating of plus-9 is probably what stands out most, and gives coach John Tortorella confidence on the back line. Tortorella is still working him along slowly. In Game 4, he had just 21 shifts covering 19:13 of ice time.

        Oh, brother

As the regular season winded down, there was a lot of talk about Buffalo sharpshooter Marcus Foligno and his end-of-year tear. Marcus, in 14 games after a callup from the AHL, had six goals, seven assists and was a plus-6. But his brother, Nick, has been a true force for Ottawa in the postseason while Marcus is home on the couch.

Nick had 15 goals and 47 points in the regular season. He was among many pleasant surprises as the Senators overcame expectations and landed in the postseason. But in Round 1, he's been even better.

Nick has a goal, three points and 13 hits as the series comes back to New York. He also has nine shots on goal, six penalty minutes and has frankly been in the middle of everything.

The Game 2 win at Madison Square Garden last Saturday might have been his best effort of the series. He had jump, often breaking into the Rangers' zone with a burst down the boards. He also had a goal and three shots on net.

        Coming at you in waves

Tortorella and Rangers general manager Glen Sather would have told you, prior to the series, that New York's depth is not only a reason the Rangers are the No. 1 seed, but a reason this team can go a long way. And through four games, it's hard to argue with the depth, at least offensively.

Headed into this pivotal Game 5, New York has not one, not two, but seven players with three points. Indeed, Marian Gaborik, Artem Anisimov, Dan Girardi, Ryan Callahan, Brad Richards, Brian Boyle and Stralman all have a trio on the leaderboard, and Richards and Boyle have combined for 34 shots.

It’s not gotten them too far just yet. They are two losses away from this great season being lost. But two of the next three are at home, and with layers of offensive depth to throw on the ice at crunch time, it’s likely New York will advance.

        History

Ottawa has won seven of the last nine as a road underdog, but New York has won eight of the last nine after two-days' rest. It’s tough to get a read on totals in this series. The over-under is just 1-1 with two pushes so far.

Ice picks: Saturday's best NHL bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Jersey Devils at Florida Panthers (109,5)

Don't be fooled by Florida's home-ice advantage. The Panthers have it because they are a division champion, but they compiled a 38-26-18 record during the regular season compared to New Jersey's 48-28-6.

The Devils fell behind 2-1 in this series, but they seemed to restore order to the proceedings with a 4-0 shutout at home on Thursday. Four players have notched two goals so far in the series, including Ilya Kovalchuk and Zach Parise.

But the story right now is veteran netminder Martin Brodeur. The 39-year-old, who turns 40 next month, set the career playoff shutout record with his performance on Thursday. He made 26 saves to post his 24th career playoff blanking.

"That’s vintage Marty Brodeur," coach Pete DeBoer said. "We’ve come to expect that around here."

Expect more of the same in Game 5.

        Pick: Devils

San Jose Sharks at St. Louis Blues (-186, 5)

The Blues have regained control in this Western Conference quarterfinals series after dropping Game 1 at home in overtime. They rolled 3-0 at home in Game 2 then scored a pair of one-goal victories at San Jose. St. Louis can finish the job on Saturday.

Interestingly enough, the Blues are getting it done with a backup goalie. Starter Jaroslav Halak left Game 2 with a lower body injury but Brian Elliott has picked up the slack in front of the net. Elliott made 17 saves without a blemish to end Game 2 and he made 25 saves in a 2-1 win in Game 4.

"I just think his focus is his strength," coach Ken Hitchcock said. "He's a very competitive guy at practice, too. We're constantly having to stop him and kick him off the ice. He has to get in the mind-set that the games are everything, so less is more.... He's one of those guys who wants to hang out there until the last shot.''

St. Louis went a ridiculous 30-6-5 at home during the regular season. The chances of the team losing twice with home-ice advantage in the same series is slim, especially based on its last three performances.

        Pick: Blues

Hot lines: Saturday's best MLB bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Cardinals at Pittsburgh Pirates (116, 8)

Albert Pujols is gone, but that doesn't mean the Cardinals aren't still the defending champions. They are, and they're playing like it.

St. Louis is 10-4 and kicked off a three-game set at Pittsburgh with a 4-1 victory on Friday night. The team is 6-2 on the road so far in 2012.

Chris Carpenter is on the disabled list, but Jake Westbrook is picking up the slack. The 6-foot-3 righty has made two starts for the year and will toe the rubber again for this one. He is 2-0 and boasts a 0.64 ERA, having allowed only one earned run in 14 innings.

New manager Mike Matheny made sure to have Westbrook hear his voice during spring training.

“I wanted to reinforce to him his style of pitching, which is the exact same philosophy this organization has, which is pound the bottom of the zone, make guys put it in play,” Matheny explained. “I believe we have the kind of defense that can make a lot of plays for him.”

          Pick: Cardinals

Minnesota Twins at Tampa Bay Rays (-181, 7.5)

The Twins were expected to be one of the worst teams in baseball and they have not disappointed in that regard. Even after edging Tampa Bay 5-4 on Friday night, Minnesota is 5-9 overall and 3-5 on the road.

Adding insult to injury, the Twins have to go up against James Shields on Saturday. In three starts this season, Shields is 2-0 with a 3.38 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 21 1/3 innings. The righty has gone at least eight innings in each of his last two outings and he allowed no runs on four hits in a 1-0 win at Boston on Monday.

Minnesota is countering with Carl Pavano, who has been solid at times but mostly unspectacular so far in 2012. Through three starts the veteran right-hander is 1-1 with a 5.23 ERA.

The Rays are 3-1 at home this season and they are 10-2 in their last 12 home games against right-handed starters dating back to last season. The are 8-0 in Shields' last eight starts at Tropicana Field.

          Pick: Rays

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pick 'n' roll: Saturday's best NBA bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Denver Nuggets at Phoenix Suns (-4.5, 210.5)

The recent head-to-head history does not bode well for Phoenix heading into Saturday's home contest against Denver. The Nuggets have won five in a row over the Suns and are 4-0-1 ATS in that span. George Karl's crew has won twice this season at home; 109-92 on February 14 and 105-99 on April 6.

Kenneth Faried, "the Manimal," averaged 12.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in those two games. He has been hot of late, too, with double-doubles in three of his last six outings and double-digit scoring outputs in 12 of his last 18 games. He went for 27 and 17 in an April 9 blowout of Golden State.

The Nuggets are coming off a 104-98 loss to the Clippers on Wednesday but they have not dropped back-to-back contests since March 25. The team is in good shape to snag home-court advantage in a first-round series with a few more wins down the stretch.

"I think everything is in a good scenario even though there is a nervousness and a stress to it," Karl told the Denver Post. "But it is a privilege to be stressed. It's a privilege to be in the battle to compete at the highest level of sport. We've worked very hard to get here and now it's our opportunity to go to the next step."

            Pick: Nuggets

Dallas Mavericks at Chicago Bulls (N/A)

Derrick Rose has missed three consecutive games for the Bulls and he is listed as doubtful for Saturday's home showdown against Dallas. Chicago is 1-2 in those contests (1-2 ATS) and 1-3 ATS in its last four overall.

Dallas won't be missing any players due to injury, but playing time will be something to think about. They clinched a playoff spot on Thursday and are now simply jostling for seeding position, Still, head coach Rick Carlisle insists on 100 percent effort.

"We want to be playing good basketball heading into the playoffs," Carlisle told the Dallas Morning News. "We'll watch some minutes, but the emphasis is going to be on hard play, continuing to trend the right way."

The Mavericks especially don't want Dirk Nowitzki slowing down right now. The big man has heated up after a lackluster start to the season, and the last two games were no exception. Dirk dropped 40 on Utah in an overtime loss on Monday before scoring 35 in a 117-110 win over Houston on Wednesday.

            Pick: Mavericks

NASCAR betting: STP 400 preview and picks

NASCAR heads to America’s heartland this Sunday for the STP 400 at the 1.5-mile Kansas Speedway.

Forty-three race teams hope to win, but one team heads west aiming to end a winless streak and has perhaps a little more motivation than the rest.

It’s been 13 races since Hendrick Motorsports last visited Victory Lane. While that may not seem like a long stretch, for NASCAR’s powerhouse team it’s a winless drought that is out of character. The only other time Hendrick teams went this long without a win was between 2002 and 2003, when they went 15 races without a checkered flag.

The last time a Hendrick team tasted victory was last October and that win happened to come at Kansas. The driver who won that race is this week’s favorite, Jimmie Johnson. Johnson has had a decent season thus far, with three Top-5 finishes. He also came in second at Texas last week, another 1.5-mile track. Johnson seems poised to lead Hendrick to its 200th victory.

With two wins, a second-place showing and two Top-10 finishes in the last five races at Kansas, Johnson is the driver to beat this week.

“I like the options that Kansas Speedway provides, we can run anywhere,” Johnson said. “It has just been a strong track for me through the years. It is a lot like Chicago which is another real strong track for me. There are just certain tracks that just kind of click. Kansas has been one of those for me.”

Like Johnson, Greg Biffle has two wins at Kansas. He’s also coming off a win at Texas last week - his first victory since 2010. Biffle was on the pole at Kansas last fall and has one of his two wins along with two Top 5s and two Top 10s in the last five races. He’s on a roll and that could continue Sunday.

Brad Keselowski is the defending winner of this race. He’s looking to rebound from a disastrous outing at Texas last week due to mechanical issues. Keselowski followed his spring win here with a third-place finish in the fall and could easily score his second win of 2012.

“A win and a third-place finish is about as good as it gets,” crew chief Paul Wolfe said. “Our focus, as it was last fall, will be on qualifying. Even though we won the spring race from the 25th position, track position is very important. Once we got Brad out front in that race, it was almost like we gave him a completely different Miller Lite Dodge. If we can qualify up front, I'm confident that Brad can keep the car up there all day and we can be there at the end."

              Head-to-head

Clint Bowyer vs. Carl Edwards: Both drivers consider Kansas their home track but neither has won here. Bowyer hails from Emporia, Kansas. Edwards comes from nearby Columbia, Missouri. Both have been competitive this season, but lack the momentum to be favorites this week. Edwards was fifth in this race last year, Bowyer 18th. Look for it to shake out that way, as Edwards should finish ahead of Bowyer Sunday.

Tony Stewart vs. Ryan Newman: The Stewart-Haas Racing duo has won this season. Both have had success at Kansas, and Stewart could certainly step up Sunday. However, for the last few weeks, the team has struggled. Until they can find what it is they are lacking, wins may be hard to come by. This Sunday though, look for Stewart, who has a slightly better record here, to finish ahead of Newman.

              Bottom Line

Two drivers have won from the pole: Joe Nemechek in 2004 and Jimmie Johnson in 2008. The furthest back in the field that race winner started was 25th, by Brad Keselowski last season.

              Interesting fact

Only two active drivers with more than four starts have averaged a Top-10 finish at Kansas: Greg Biffle (8.2) and Jimmie Johnson (8.3).

              Favorites

              Jimmie Johnson (+600)
              Greg Biffle (+800)
              Brad Keselowski (+1,200)

Game of the day: Yankees at Red Sox
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox (-114, 11)

The Boston Red Sox organization remembered the past Friday when it celebrated the 100-year anniversary of Fenway Park’s opening before the team turned in a performance to forget. The Red Sox, who are off to a 4-9 start, host the New York Yankees in the second of a three-game series Saturday. Boston has been outscored 31-8 during its four-game losing streak – all at home – and is off to another pedestrian start after losing 10 of its first 12 in 2011.

The Red Sox are sub-par at the plate, but pitching – especially the starters – is the biggest reason why Boston is struggling. The Red Sox have allowed a major league-leading 23 homers and the starters have a combined 6.11 ERA. The Yankees send out veteran Freddy Garcia, who has enjoyed success against the Red Sox in the past. Boston counters with youngster Felix Doubront, who will make his first career start against the Yankees.

                TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, Fox

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Freddy Garcia (0-1, 6.97 ERA) vs. Red Sox LH Felix Doubront (0-0, 5.40 ERA)

Garcia has allowed 13 hits in 8 1/3 innings over two starts, including a 7-3 loss to Minnesota on Monday in which he yielded five runs and nine hits. Garcia, though, is 9-4 lifetime against the Red Sox, including 3-1 at Fenway Park. The Red Sox roster is hitting .279 against Garcia, with Mike Aviles (8-for-14) and David Ortiz (11-for-39, two homers) doing the most damage. Garcia has fared well against Adrian Gonzalez and Kevin Youkilis (combined 5-for-28).

Doubront pitched five innings in each 2012 start, and has 13 strikeouts. The Red Sox won both – 6-4 against Tampa Bay on Sunday and 4-2 at Toronto on April 9. Doubront has faced the Yankees four times out of the bullpen and yielded only a .200 batting average with six strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.
