Wednesday's Betting Tips: Brewers unbeatable in Greinke's home starts

    Weather to watch

Detroit Tigers at Kansas City Royals – 12 mph winds are expected to be blowing out to left-center field.

    Who’s hot

NBA: The Los Angeles Clippers have covered in 10 of their last 14 overall.

NBA: The over is 10-3 in Milwaukee’s last 13 road games.

NHL: The road team has won 17 of the last 24 meetings between the Flyers and Penguins.
NHL: Los Angeles has won eight of its last 10 home games.

MLB: Milwaukee has won 18 straight home games with Zack Greinke starting.

NBA: Portland is 3-7 against the spread in its last 10 meetings with Utah.

NBA: Washington has covered in only five of its last 19 home games.

NHL: Ottawa is 3-13 in its last 16 playoff games as an underdog.

NHL: The over is 1-7-3 in Vancouver’s last 11 road games.

MLB: The Los Angeles Angels have lost each of Ervin Santana’s last six starts.

    Key stat

17 – The Charlotte Bobcats have now lost a franchise-record 17 straight games as they get set to host the Chicago Bulls Wednesday. The Bobcats have covered just four times during the losing streak.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Chris Kaman, New Orleans Hornets – Kaman has a bruised left tibia and is now expected to miss the rest of the year. He was averaging 13.1 points, 7.7 rebounds and 1.6 blocks even though he saw limited action at times during the season and should be a hot commodity on the free agent market in the offseason. New Orleans visits Memphis Wednesday.

    Game of the day

Orlando Magic at Boston Celtics (N/A)

    Notable quotable

"Chelsea, of course [will reach the final]. Chelsea against Real Madrid, I hope. We know what Barcelona are about and that we have to be on our game. We’re confident and feel we’re good enough to progress." – Chelsea’s Ashely Cole about the team’s chances to advance to the Champions League final. Chelsea opens its first leg of the semifinal against Barcelona Wednesday at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea, which is set as a +365 underdog has four wins to Barcelona’s five in 13 meetings between the two sides, with four draws. The draw for Leg 1 of the semifinal is listed at +260.

    Notes and tips

New Jersey Nets point guard Deron Williams will miss Wednesday's game against the New York Knicks because of a sore right calf, according to the team's official injury report. Williams sat out Monday's 101-98 loss to the Miami Heat with the same injury. The All-Star suffered the injury after a collision with Boston Celtics center Greg Stiemsma on Saturday. The 27-year-old is averaging 21 points and 8.7 assists in 55 games this season.

Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson suffered a "setback" Monday in his recovery from a concussion, according to coach Paul MacLean. Alfredsson didn't practice with the team Tuesday and is doubtful for Game 4 on Wednesday against the New York Rangers. Alfredsson suffered a concussion during Game 2 on Saturday after taking an elbow to the head from Rangers' winger Carl Hagelin, who was suspended three games for the hit. The Rangers lead the best-of-seven series 2-1.

Golden State guard Steph Curry won’t play again this season, according to a report from ESPN’s Chris Broussard. Curry’s nagging foot/ankle injuries have held him to 14.7 points and 5.3 assists per game this season. The sharpshooter has missed 48 games over the past two seasons.
Veteran starter Jason Marquis will make his debut for the Minnesota Twins Wednesday at the New York Yankees. Marquis, a native of New York, missed two weeks of spring training after his daughter was injured in a bicycle accident. The Twins opened as big +210 underdogs.

Pittsburgh Penguins forward James Neal was suspended one game and Arron Asham four contests by the NHL for their actions during Sunday's Game 3 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series versus the Philadelphia Flyers. Neal belted rookie Sean Couturier during the third period before he was whistled for a charging penalty against All-Star Claude Giroux later in the session. Asham brutally cross-checked rookie Brayden Schenn during the first period. Asham, who is a former Flyer, received a match penalty for the hit. The Penguins have been pushed to the brink of elimination by their Keystone State rival. Game 4 is Wednesday night.

      Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Road teams are 17-8 in the NHL playoffs so far this spring.

-- Arizona's Chris Young made a great catch last night but crashed into the wall in leftcenter field and had to leave the game. Hope it isn't serious.

-- Darin Sutton/Mark Grace called the Diamondbacks game from the pool behind the rightcenter field fence. Not actually in the pool, but close.

-- Knicks made 14-20 from the arc in the first half, ran out to a 72-53 lead at halftime and then held off the Celtics, 118-110.

-- Cavaliers were down 100-50 after the third quarter in Detroit, only 5th time in last 20 years an NBA team was down 50 after three quarters.

-- A's had scored total of 28 runs in their first 11 games, seven in last four, but they scored four runs in top of 8th, rallied to beat the Angels 5-3

      **************

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Impressions of the 2012 NFL schedule.....

      13) Every team is going to be on in primetime this year, with maximum five primetime games. Broncos, of course, are on five times, with Denver debut of Peyton Manning against Pittsburgh a Sunday night game in Week 1. All in all, eight teams have the maximum five primetime games.

      12) Jets/Bills and Bengals/Ravens both play each other in Week 1, and then not again until Week 17. All Week 17 games are divisional tilts.

      11) Detroit coach Jim Schwartz came to prominence as a defensive coach in Tennessee under Jeff Fisher, whose son Brandon was an assistant coach for the Lions LY, so of course the Rams-Lions meet in Week 1 this year.

      10) NFL Network has 13 Thursday night games, from Weeks 2-15; all 32 teams will appear at least once in primetime, and no more than five times. No team can be on in primetime more than five times.

      9) Saints interim coach Joe Vitt is suspended for the first six games; after he comes back, Saints' first three games are: at Denver, then Philly at home and then the Falcons, with the Denver/Philly games in primetime. This is going to be a very difficult season on Bourbon Street.

      8) Buffalo season ticket holders might not be thrilled by the four December home games- they only have one home game in October.

      7) Green Bay and Houston both got saddled with three road games in row, which is difficult; Texans' stretch includes a Thanksgiving Day game, then 10 days before the next game, then eight days before a Monday night game in Foxboro, so at least they'll get extra rest, then they play two of their last three games against the Colts.

      6) Steelers/Ravens play their two games within two weeks of each other,in weeks 11-13; Ravens have a trip to San Diego in between. Steelers have a visit to division rival Cleveland in between.

      5) If Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III start right away, their debuts will both be on the road. Colts open at Chicago, the Redskins in Superdome. It is assumed that Luck/Griffin will go 1-2 in next week's draft.

      4) Giants open with three road games in first four weeks, but they only leave the eastern time zone twice (Dallas/SF).

      3) Thanksgiving Day is Texans-Lions/Redskins-Cowboys/Jets-Patriots. Of the 16 Thursday games this year, seven visiting teams don't have to leave their time zone when they travel.

      2) Cowboys play five of last seven games at home, but the two road games are both potential cold weather games, at Cincinnati/Washington.

      1) Three of the Jets' four primetime games are at home, including a Week 12 visit by the Patriots. Will be lot of pressure on Sanchez in the home opener with Buffalo, considering that Week 2 is a trip to Pittsburgh.

In three games, Senators have one goal in periods 1-2.

Canucks @ Kings-- LA hasn't won playoff series since 2001; since losing in '93 Finals, they're 1-5 in first round series but they're up 3-0 and are 8-2 in last ten games at Staples. Vancouver won Presidents' Cup last two years, but now has immense pressure on it, losing first three series games, scoring four goals. Under is 8-2-1 in last 11 series games. Canucks are 0-14 on power play in series; Los Angeles 3-20. Vancouver lost six of its last eight road games overall. Canucks outshot LA 89-46 in last two games, but Quick has stonewalled them.

Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Rangers at Ottawa Senators (+100, 5)

When Rangers rookie Carl Hagelin knocked Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson out of Game 2, he might have taken Ottawa out of the series entirely.

Hagelin was slapped with a three-game suspension for the hit, but with Chris Kreider adequately filling his spot on the top line in his first game as a pro, and Ottawa now struggling to find the back of the net, it could turn out to be a good trade-off for Rangers supporters.

Although Ottawa put the Rangers under pressure in Game 3’s 1-0 loss at times, New York consistently drops into the middle in the defensive zone, then capitalizes on the counterattack.

“We could just as easily be talking about us winning 1-0 as them winning 1-0,” Ottawa coach Paul MacLean told reporters after the game. “We just didn’t get a bounce at the end.”
Maybe, but this is how the Rangers challenged for the Presidents’ Trophy – winning those 1-0 or 2-1 games.

With Ottawa likely without its captain again and the Rangers looking more like themselves in Game 3, we’re siding with the visitors.

        Pick: Rangers

Vancouver Canucks at Los Angeles Kings (-125, 5)

Everybody knew there were going to be major changes, when Darryl Sutter took over behind the bench for the Los Angeles Kings. Sutter isn’t the kind of guy to take anything lightly and the team is now playing a much more responsible brand of hockey.

“He's got a great system in place and he gets what he wants out of all his players,” defenseman Drew Doughty told reporters of his head coach. “And if not, you're not going to play. I know, for me and a lot of the other guys, it's almost scary playing for him because if you make that mistake, he's going to be all over you. It's not fun when he's all over you, so we're all playing our best for him and for each other."

As a result, the Kings have won 12 of their last 17 overall and eight of their last 10 home games.

The Canucks are desperate and the only way L.A. is going to pull off a sweep is to stay out of penalty trouble and watch Jonathan Quick stand on his head again.

At this point, that seems more than likely.

        Pick: Under

Pick 'n' roll: Wednesday's best NBA bets
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oddsmakers have yet to set a line on Wednesday's Chicago-Charlotte matchup. Pick should be considered an early lean.

Chicago Bulls at Charlotte Bobcats (N/A)

Chicago has a pivotal contest against the Miami Heat on Thursday so it will be interesting to see if ailing point guard Derek Rose (foot) and forward Luol Deng (rib) will be held out against the lowly Bobcats.

Neither played in the loss to Washington and Rose’s durability is becoming worrisome to coach Tom Thibodeau with the playoffs looming.

“I’m always concerned,” Thibodeau said. “He’s missed a lot of games. I’m concerned about that, but also disappointed (overall). We have to play a lot better.”

The Bulls have committed 38 turnovers over the last two games and are hanging on to a 2 1/2-game lead over the Heat for best record in the Eastern Conference.

                        Pick: Under

Oklahoma City at Phoenix Suns (3.5, 207)

The Phoenix Suns have taken advantage of the Houston Rockets’ recent slide to jump into a tie for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Winners of seven of the last 10, the Suns have gotten back to their high-scoring ways, averaging 112 points in their victories this month. Another team that doesn’t mind getting out on the run are the Oklahoma City Thunder, who are still fighting for the top spot in the West.

If Phoenix is going to hang onto a playoff berth, it won’t be easy. The last five games are against the Thunder, the Clippers, Denver Nuggets, Utah Jazz and San Antonio Spurs. Fortunately, four of those five are in Phoenix, where the Suns have gone 18-11 (11-2 since the All-Star break).

Phoenix holds the tiebreaker with the Rockets based on a stronger record against conference opponents. The Suns have scored 125 points in each of their last two home games, including a 125-107 triumph over the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday.

Phoenix shot a season-high 60 percent in that contest as Steve Nash fought off a sore hip to hand out 13 assists.

                        Pick: Over
