Tuesday’s betting tips: Blue Jays are money off rest days

    Who's Hot

NBA: Boston is 6-1-1 against the spread in its last eight and have covered in four of their last five vs. New York.

NBA: Cleveland has covered in six of its last eight and is 7-1 against the spread in its last eight games in Detroit.

NHL: New Jersey has won seven of its last eight.

NHL: Phoenix has won six of its last seven.

MLB: Toronto is 21-9 in its last 30 games when coming off an off day.

MLB: Texas has won 14 of its last 20 road games.

    Who’s not

NBA: Minnesota is 1-6 against the spread in its last seven meetings with Memphis.

NBA: Los Angeles Lakers have covered just two of their last 12 home games.

NHL: Detroit is 2-12 in its last 14 games against a team with a winning record.

NHL: The under is 1-7-1 in Chicago’s last nine home games.

MLB: The Chicago Cubs have won just one of Ryan Dempster’s last six starts.

MLB: Boston is 9-21 in its last 30.

    Key stat

1 – Real Madrid has conceded just one goal in five away games during Champions League play. Madrid, which hasn’t lost in 20 games in all competitions, is set at +160 for the first leg of its semifinal series against Bayern Munich (+150). The draw is pegged at +225.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Marc Gasol, Memphis Grizzlies - Gasol suffered a hyperextended left knee in Sunday's loss to the New Orleans Hornets. Gasol was hurt when he banged knees with Xavier Henry in the fourth quarter. He is scheduled to undergo an MRI exam. The 7-foot-1 center entered Sunday's game averaging 15.0 points and 9.5 rebounds, which are both career highs.

    Game of the day

Boston Celtics at New York Knicks (N/A)

    Notable quotable

"I think some are really kind of weak calls. We just have to not worry about that, because we can't do anything about it. But of course, it's a little bit frustrating with the inconsistency of some calls. We slashed the stick and it's laying there and the stick doesn't even break. They do the same thing to Mule [Johan Franzen], but no call is made. I think it's a little bit inconsistency from the refs." – Detroit Red Wings defenseman Jonathan Ericsson after his team took 19 minor penalties over the first three games of Detroit’s series with Nashville.

    Notes and tips

Chicago Bulls forward Luol Deng is questionable for Tuesday's game with a rib injury he picked up in Sunday's overtime win against Detroit. Deng, who is already playing with a torn ligament in his wrist, took a shot from Pistons guard Ben Gordon to the ribs, according to the Chicago Tribune. Deng tied a season low with two points on 1-of-8 shooting in 44 minutes. He went into Sunday's game averaging 15.7 points, 6.5 rebounds and a league-high 39.4 minutes per game.

Vancouver Canucks left wing Daniel Sedin will return to practice in hopes of playing in the postseason. Sedin has missed the past 12 games due to a concussion. He is expected to join the Canucks in Los Angeles for a Tuesday practice. Vancouver coach Alain Vigneault did not say if he thought Sedin would be ready to return to game action. Vancouver, which finished with the NHL's best record during the regular season, could use a boost provided by Sedin as the Canucks are in a 3-0 hole to the Kings in the best-of-seven series. Sedin had 30 goals and 37 assists this season.

San Francisco starter Madison Bumgarner climbs the mound Tuesday a day after he inked a fat five-year, $35 million contract extension. The 22-year-old lefty is 21-20 with a 3.12 ERA over the last three seasons and is coming off a win at Colorado in which he gave up just one earned run in 7 1/3 innings of work. Bumgarner shares the hill with Philadelphia’s Joe Blanton.

Pittsburgh Penguins forwards James Neal and Arron Asham will have hearings with the NHL following their actions during Sunday's Game 3 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series versus the Philadelphia Flyers. Neal's hearings will focus on his hit on rookie Sean Couturier during the third period - as well as his charging penalty against All-Star Claude Giroux later in the session. Asham's hearing will stem from his cross-check on rookie Brayden Schenn during the first period.

      Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- NFL schedule will be announced at 7pm Tuesday, so you can guess what tomorrow's home page will be about.

-- Word of the Day: Fob. Totally baffled by this on Words with Friends, its the chain on a pocket watch. Who knew? My 86-year old dad knew.

-- Carl Pavano was 9-8 in four years with Bronx, during which he started 26 games while pocketing $40M+; he beat the Bombers 7-3 Monday. I'm sure Brian Cashman was thrilled with that result.

-- If the Red Sox don't want Kevin Youkilis, I know an AL team out in northern California that would love to have him.

-- Mavericks lost 123-121 in triple OT at Utah; Mavericks had three subs play 36+ minutes. Utah bench scored only 11 points.

-- Two kids in a New Orleans high school game combined to throw 347 pitches in an 18-inning game last week; one kid threw 193, the other 154. Both coaches should get their asses kicked by the kids' dads, since both pitchers have D-I college scholarships awaiting them.

      *************

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Questions, questions, always questions......

      13) Why the fascination with Tim Tebow? I don’t get it. Bears had QB 40 years ago named Bobby Douglass who was a lot like Tebow, a tough lefty who ran a lot but couldn’t hit the side of a barn passing.

Douglass wasn’t exactly the religious sort- he was married to a Playboy bunny, and he wasn’t a college star like Tebow, but at best Tebow is a marginal NFL starter, but he’s treated like the fifth Beatle. I don’t get it.

      12) Why is gambling legal only when the government runs the operation? I’ve always wondered this. I can buy a $20 lottery ticket where I work, but God forbid someone run an NCAA pool. Its complete hypocrisy.

      11) Is there anyone in this country who thinks the Electoral College is still the best way to elect a President? In this day and age, why not just count all the votes, and whomever gets the most wins? Would this be so difficult?

      10) Who do baseball managers/coaches wear uniforms? They don’t play, it makes no sense, and it doesn't even look right.

      9) Why do people in hockey condone fighting? It takes away from a great game. They could do away with it in 90 seconds, if they wanted to. Why don’t they want to?

      8) Why are college coaches allowed to bolt jobs before their contracts are up? Why is this allowed? If a school fires a coach, they have to pay the guy (unless he is married and wrecks his motorcycle while his girlfriend is riding with him), I just wonder why coaches aren’t bound by a signed contract?

      7) How come nobody ever talks about Larry Doby as a great pioneer? He was the first African-American to play in the American League; back then, there were 16 big league teams, three in NYC, two each in Boston/Philly/ Chicago and St Louis, which means that Doby was first African-American to be a visiting player in Detroit, Bronx and Washington DC, as well as #2 in four other cities, yet you never hear his name mentioned.

      6) Why do fans have to be quiet when a golfer is hitting the ball? Albert Pujols is trying to hit 95 mph fastballs with movement on them, yet the fans are allowed to yell, it doesn’t seem to distract him too much. Golf balls are sitting there, waiting to be hit. I’m just sayin’.

      5) Do politicians realize how little the average citizen respects them, and how we just assume most of then are corrupt and flush with self-interest?

      4) Why don’t boxers have to wear headgear? With all this talk about concussions in football/hockey, and boxers are allowed to fight with unprotected heads? Its insane.

      3) Why hasn’t one of the old NBA teams had a retro-ABA night, where they bring back red/white/blue ball for a night? Who would be against this?

      2) Why do pro football players have radios in their helmets? Who decided this was a good idea? You have six days to prepare for the game, how about on the 7th day, they just let the players play.

      1) Can you believe that as late as 1974, an NHL goalie played without a mask? Seriously, Andy Brown was the last guy. Now that’s crazy.

        Armadillo's Write-Up

        Tuesday, April 17

Devils @ Panthers-- New Jersey came out and dominated first period in Game 1, outshooting hosts 26-6, outscoring them 3-0, but Florida scored 0:23 into Game 2, held Devils to 13 shots over first two periods, and won for just third time in last 12 games overall. Panthers are 4-10 in last 14 visits to New Jersey, but are 3-3 here over last three years. There were only 89 faceoffs in first two games, so lot less stoppages than in most games. Florida is 3-7 on power play in series, Devils 1-8. Panthers have been outshot 33-12 in first period so far in series- they'll have to withstand early surge in Devils' first home game.

Predators @ Red Wings-- All three series games ended 3-2, with losing team outshooting winners 46-15 in third period; Predators won four of last five vs Detroit, with all five totals 5. Detroit lost six of last nine games overall, four of last five at home. Nashville won six of last eight games, allowing total of seven goals in the wins. Predators won five of last eight games in this building. Team that led after the first period won all three games. Nashville was 1-16 on power play in first two games, Red Wings 3-14.

Blackhawks @ Coyotes-- Chicago tied first two games in series with 0:14 left and 0:05 left in regulation; Phoenix won four of last six visits to Windy City, but they've never won playoff series (0-7) since moving to desert; their last such win was in ’93 as Winnipeg Jets- overall, they are 2-18 in playoff series (0-10 vs Detroit/Edmonton), so they're fighting both Chicago anf ghosts of past. Coyotes won six of last seven games, allowing only eight goals. Coyotes won four of last five games with Chicago, allowing ten goals. Chicago is 1-7, Coyotes 2-6 on power play so far in series.

Ice picks: Tuesday's best NHL bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nashville Predators at Detroit Red Wings (-165, 5)

The one constant for the Detroit Red Wings this season has been a decisive edge on their home ice. That quickly went out the window in their playoff home opener, leaving Detroit in a perilous situation Tuesday night as it prepares to host the Nashville Predators in Game 4 of their Western Conference quarterfinal series.

Nashville posted a 3-2 win in Game 3 at Joe Louis Arena – its second straight victory in Detroit counting the regular season – to take a 2-1 lead in the series.

Even though Detroit’s penalty-killing unit has done a superb job of keeping Nashville’s top-ranked power play in check, the number of infractions whistled against the Red Wings is grating on the players.

Detroit was the second-least penalized team (to Nashville) in the regular season but ranks third in the playoffs with 19 penalties.

"You don't want to be wasting your energy killing penalties the whole game,” Drew Miller told reporters.

The Red Wings also need some of their top scorers to step up. Jiri Hudler, who had 25 goals during the regular season, doesn’t have a point in the series, while 23-goal scorer Valtteri Filppula has only one assist.

        Pick: Under

Phoenix Coyotes at Chicago Blackhawks (-150, 5.5)

Mike Smith was the one player touted as indispensable entering the Western Conference quarterfinal between the Chicago Blackhawks and Phoenix Coyotes.

So, the news that Smith was among three Phoenix players that didn’t practice Monday raised more than a few questions as the series shifted to Chicago for Tuesday’s Game 3 tied at one game apiece. Smith was flattened by a shoulder to the head during the Blackhawks’ overtime win Saturday, but remained in the game and claimed he was 100 percent.

Smith reacted like he was beheaded when he was hit by Chicago’s Andrew Shaw during the second period, but he played extremely well the rest of the way.

Martin Hanzal, who scored in overtime of Game 1, and left wing Lauri Korpikoski also missed Monday’s practice after sustaining injuries in Game 2.

Phoenix coach Dave Tippett declined to discuss the health of any of the three players, but said of Smith: “He’s fine.”

That's good news for under bettors.

        Pick: Under

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rounding the bases: This week's best MLB trends
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in Major League Baseball.

                  HOT TEAM: Los Angeles Dodgers

                  THIS SEASON: 9-1.
                  LAST WEEK: 9-1.
THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: At the Brewers for three, at the Astros for three.

THE SKINNY: You didn’t think Magic Johnson was going to jump on a losing franchise, did you? A relaxed, rejuvenated Dodgers team -- that has just a little less of a cloud hanging over its head nowadays thanks to a new ownership group -- has opened up the season like a house on fire.

Sunday’s 5-4 win over the Padres was Los Angeles’ sixth in a row and was just how Magic and Co. drew it up. It is indeed early, but the numbers are impressive. The Dodgers are 6-1 versus the National League West, and 6-0 at home. And consider this: We’ve only played a week this season and Kemp already has 16 RBIs and Andre Ethier has 15. Not too bad for a small sampling of work.

                  COLD TEAM: Minnesota Twins

                  THIS SEASON: 2-7.
                  LAST WEEK: 2-7.
THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: At the Yankees for four, at the Rays for three.

THE SKINNY: Surely, the state of Minnesota is happy to have their version of the M&M Boys back in the fold and back on the field. Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau are healthy and have returned to their rightful place in the middle of the Twins’ lineup.

But even these two stars would probably tell you two things: No. 1, it's going to take some time to get back into a groove. And No. 2, as for their early numbers so far? Well, so-so is about the best that can be said by either one of them. Mauer is hitting .242 with five RBIs. Morneau is hitting .202 with two RBIs and two runs. As a result, the Twins were swept away in Texas over the weekend, and now they have to make a stop in The Bronx to see the Yankees.

                  OVER TEAM: Houston Astros

                  O/U THIS SEASON: 8-1.
                  O/U LAST WEEK: 8-1.
THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: At the Nationals for four, home to the Dodgers for three.

THE SKINNY: And you thought the only way you were going to make money off the Astros this season was going to be to fade them, right? Well, that may well end up being accurate, but for now, ride this over train.

Sunday’s 5-4 loss to the Marlins in Miami was Houston’s sixth straight over, and it’s been a little bit of everything. Poor pitching, yes, but also halfway decent offense.

The Astros scored 13 runs against Miami in the three-game set, and while that’s nothing special, it was enough to cash in. The Astros may not have name power, but they are producing at the plate. And before long, one of the National League’s worst bullpens is going to rear its head, and produce even more overs.

                  UNDER TEAM: Pittsburgh Pirates

                  O/U THIS SEASON: 1-8.
                  O/U LAST WEEK: 1-8.
THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE: At the Diamondbacks for three, home to the Cardinals for three.

THE SKINNY: At first glance, you’ll see this and say “It’s the same old Pirates. They cannot hit.” And you’re not totally off base. But Pittsburgh can pitch a little, too. And those two factors -- combined with some difficult scheduling -- have meshed to form a winning under recipe. Sunday’s 4-1 win at the Giants was the team’s sixth straight under. The Pirates scored just seven runs total in a three-game set at San Francisco, and Clint Hurdle’s pitching staff has followed suit, allowing no more than five runs in any one game this season.

Hot lines: Tuesday's best MLB bets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleveland Indians at Seattle Mariners (+110, 7)

Averaging an MLB-best 6.5 runs, the Indians have homered in each of their first eight games, the fourth-longest streak in franchise history.

Rejuvenated Travis Hafner (2 HRs, 5 RBIs), the 34-year-old DH, and 2B Jason Kipnis (3 HRs, 7 RBIs) are leading the power surge. Hafner hit a 468-foot bomb in Sunday's 13-7 blowout of Kansas City.

"Wow! He's hit two balls already that I guess the people in Cleveland were used to seeing before he hurt his shoulder," manager Manny Acta said of Hafner. "I've seen a lot of games here and I've never seen a ball hit that far."

Cleveland's offense will present a major challenge to Seattle starter Kevin Millwood, who is trying to revive his career at age 37.

The Mariners have built their winning record on the backs of the A’s. Seattle has played the A’s seven times, getting five of its seven wins against them. Seattle ranks 13th in the AL in slugging percentage (.353), ahead of only Oakland.

Cleveland scored at least eight runs in its first three road games for the first time in franchise history.

                    Pick: Over

Tampa Bay Rays at Toronto Blue Jays (-130, 8)

Toronto saved face with a win over Baltimore in its series finale after two bullpen collapses in the late innings. The Blue Jays' starters have been stellar to begin the season, posting a collective 2.90 ERA, second lowest in the American League.

Tampa Bay also did some damage control with a 1-0 win over Boston Monday, snapping a four-game losing streak. The Rays' offense is sputtering, scoring an average of only 2.8 runs in the last five games and could have a tough time against Ricky Romero.

Romero picked up his first win of 2012 with an impressive outing versus Boston, giving up only one run on three hits over 8 1/3 innings. The lefty is 5-4 with a career 3.18 ERA against Tampa Bay, including a 3-2 mark and 2.02 ERA in five starts versus the Rays last season.

Jose Bautista is getting warmer with a hit in all three games against the Orioles. However, the reigning home run king hasn’t gone yard since opening day and has also failed to drive in a run since putting two on the board on April 5. Tampa Bay leaked runs to the Red Sox, getting outscored 31-13 in that four-game set.

                    Pick: Blue Jays
