Monday's betting tips: Bruins at home on the road

    Weather to watch

Fourteen mile-per-hour winds will be blowing out to right-center when the White Sox host the Orioles on Monday night. There will be clear skies, with temperatures in the high 40s.

    Who’s hot

NBA: The Suns are 18-8 ATS in their last 26 games.

NBA: The home team is 24-9-1 ATS in the last 34 Dallas-Utah games.

NHL: The Bruins are 5-0 in their last five road games.

NHL: The Rangers are 6-1 in their last seven games in Ottawa.

MLB: The under is 6-2 in Braves pitcher Tommy Hanson’s last eight starts vs. the Mets.

    Who’s not

NBA: The T-Wolves are 2-9 ATS in their last 11 games.

NBA: Philly is 0-5 ATS in its last five meetings with Orlando.

NHL: The over is 0-4-1 in the last five Blues-Sharks games.

NHL: St. Louis is 5-13 in its last 18 games in San Jose.

MLB: The White Sox are 2-9 in Philip Humber’s last 11 starts.

    Key stat

132 – That’s how many penalty minutes San Jose and St. Louis racked up in the Blues’ 3-0 win in Game 2, including 88 minutes and 15 penalties as brawls erupted at the final whistle. With each team accusing the other of cheap shots, officials will do everything they can to avoid a repeat in Game 3 on Monday night.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid, who was a plus-16 in the regular season, missed the first two games of the playoffs with an eye/head injury and did not make the trip to Washington for Game 3 on Monday. "Right now he's not ready to go on the ice and he's going to continue treatment,” coach Claude Julien said. “When he's ready to start working out with the team then we'll bring him with us." McQuaid has not played since April 5.

    Game of the day

Boston Bruins at Washington Capitals (110, 5)

    Notable quotable

"Are you kidding me? It's going to be tough without him the next couple weeks. A herniated disk? That's crazy. Dwight isn't playing, everybody has to step up. Everybody." – Orlando Magic C Glen Davis, reacting to the Orlando Sentinel about Dwight Howard’s anticipated two-week absence. Howard is trying to treat his back injury with rest and rehabilitation, and will be evaluated in 10 days. The Magic, 2-4 without Howard, hosts Philly on Monday.

    Notes and tips

Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw faces a hearing Monday for an incident with Phoenix goaltender Mike Smith in Chicago's 4-3 overtime win Saturday. Shaw was given a five-minute major for charging and a game misconduct after making contact with Smith behind the Phoenix net. Smith stayed down for several minutes but was able to finish the game. The NHL is expected to decide Shaw's fate Monday, in advance of Tuesday's Game 3 at the United Center. The series is tied 1-1.

Suns guard Steve Nash, who said his hip was "killing" him before Saturday's game against the Spurs, hopes that treatment and medicine will enable him to play Monday when Phoenix hosts Portland. Nash (12.7 ppg, 10.9 apg) is officially questionable.

Lakers star Kobe Bryant missed his fifth straight game Sunday with inflammation in his left shin. The team is in no hurry to rush the 16-year veteran back into the lineup, as coach Mike Brown wants Bryant healthy for the playoffs. L.A. hosts San Antonio on Tuesday, with Bryant’s status yet to be clarified.

      Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- Washington is in early lead in NL East; if they contend all year, they'll have a huge decision to make as far as Strasburg's innings go. They want to keep him around 170 IP this year, but what if they're a contender?

-- Angels are 3-6; they don't have much of a bullpen.

-- Dodgers are off to a 9-1 start, their best start since 1981.

-- Mike Tirico was saying today it takes around 40 people to change the Staples Center from a basketball arena to a hockey arena. Laker game ended around 6:00; Kings' game started at 10:45. Pretty cool.

-- Sad to report the passing of former Florida Gator Dwayne Schintzius (43) and former Rams' center Rich Saul (64). Life is short; lets have fun.

-- Temps in the northeast are expected to be in low 90's Monday, way too hot for the Boston Marathon. Hope everyone stays hydrated.

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Happy Patriots' day, everyone........

      13) MLB is going to have special uniforms to honor Jackie Robinson where every player wears number 42 every April 15; they need to put their names on the back, so we can tell who is who. Wouldn't cost much more.

      12) Richard Pitino gets his first head coaching job at age 29; his dad was 26 when he got his first head coaching job, at Boston U. Few of the players at FIU asked for their scholarship release after Isiah Thomas was fired, but the school turned them down. Curious to see what happens there now.

      11) Celtics played their ninth game in 12 days Sunday. Hard to believe the NBA has subject its players to such a grueling schedule. At some point, the league has to look out for its product, no?

      10) SMU is talking Buzz Peterson as its new hoop coach; Peterson is good guy, but he is one of the few coaches in America who is more nomadic than Larry Brown, and he hasn't won enough to merit being a Big East coach.

Put it this way: SMU is in Dallas, a talent-rich city. Moving up to the Big East, they need a bigtime coach to get some of that talent to stay home.

      9) Before he homered Sunday, Ike Davis had come to bat with 35 men on base, and hadn't knocked any of them in.

      8) A's won their game Wednesday, on a walk-off HBP; they also loaded the bases on a HBP, making it the first game to end on consecutive HBPs since 1966. Have to take these wins any way you can get them.

      7) The first cellphones were made by Motorola in 1983, and cost $3,995.

      6) Tampa Bay's Matt Joyce has already batted 9th twice and cleanup five times this season. In nine games. You don't see that every day.

      5) They show Greg Louganis diving highlights on the scoreboard at Staples Center after the Kings are called for a penalty. Apparently someone thinks the Canucks have been embellishing big hits by taking a dive.

      4) How do the Penguins allow eight goals in back-to-back playoff games? They had home ice in the series, but seem to be in the tank, down 3-0.

      3) Norfolk Admirals of the minor league AHL won their last 28 games in the regular season; wouldn't expect them to lose a best-of-7 playoff series.

      2) Lance Berkman has already suggested that Marlins will move the fences in at their new stadium, within two years. Very pitcher-friendly right now.

      1) If the playoffs started Monday morning, Mets-Arizona would be the NL one-game Wild Card playoff; can't tell about the AL, because multiple teams are tied for the Wild Card spot. 5.5 months to go, anyway.

        Rangers' Hagelin suspended three games
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The NHL on Sunday night suspended New York Rangers rookie winger Carl Hagelin three games for a hit that knocked Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson out of Game 2 on Saturday.

NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan called the hit "a reckless strike to the side of Alfredsson's head."

Hagelin has apologized for the hit and said it was unintentional. The play, which earned him a five-minute elbowing major, marred a game Ottawa won 3-2 in overtime to tie the series.

Hagelin had 14 goals and 24 assists this season while posting a plus-21 rating. The 23-year-old, who plays on New York's top line, has four shots and one assist in the playoff series.

Concern is growing in Ottawa that Alfredsson suffered another concussion. Earlier this season, he missed five games with a concussion.

His status is unclear for Monday's Game 3, with the top-seeded Rangers set as -115 road favorites.

Alfredsson scored in the series opener after tallying 27 goals and 32 assists in the regular season.

Also late Sunday, Sens defenseman Matt Carkner was suspended one game with going after Rangers center Brian Boyle early in Game 2.

Before the suspension was announced, Rangers coach John Tortorella said he did not expect Hagelin to miss a game.

"If we lose Hags for a game or two, Phillips should (miss) a game or two," Tortorella said, referring to Chris Phillips' elbow on Rangers captain Ryan Callahan.

But the elbow thrown by Phillips was not reviewed by the league.

Vancouver's Daniel Sedin could miss rest of series
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vancouver Canucks injured left wing Daniel Sedin did not make the trip to Los Angeles for Game 3 of his team’s opening-round series with the Los Angeles Kings.

Sedin, who suffered a concussion on March 21, did not practice or skate with the team Saturday before they left for California. A former employee of the Canucks said on Twitter that Sedin would not play at all in the opening round of the NHL playoffs.

“You know, there is no timeline on these injuries. I can't tell you more,” head coach Alan Vigneault told reporters when asked if Sedin could play in Game 4. “He's not skating with the team and he's not coming to L.A. I don't know about reports like that. Again, I can't comment more than what I've been telling you.”

Vancouver trails Los Angeles 0-2 in the series with the next two games at the Staples Center.

Sedin scored 30 goals and recorded 37 assists for the Canucks this season.

Stanley Cup favorites on brink of elimination
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Only three teams in NHL history have come back to win a playoff series after trailing 3-0.

That's the daunting task facing the Penguins, who entered the playoffs as the favorites to hoist the Stanley Cup. Pittsburgh was listed at +400 at Sportsbook.com -- ahead of West top seed Vancouver at +600, East top seed New York at +650 and defending Cup champ Boston at +800.

Pittsburgh lost 8-4 to Philadelphia on Sunday as Danny Briere, Matt Read and Max Talbot each scored twice for the Flyers. Pens superstar Sidney Crosby was held to one assist, and surprisingly got into a fight with Philly's Claude Giroux. Pens goalie Marc-Andre Fleury. was pulled after giving up six goals on 28 shots through two periods.

The Pens have been favored in all three games, only to lose them all. Game 4 is Wednesday in Philly.

Interestingly, the last team to overcome a 3-0 series deficit was Philly, which rallied past Boston in the 2010 Eastern Conference semifinals. The Flyers erased a 3-0 deficit in Game 7 to complete their stunning comeback.

Ice picks: Monday's best NHL bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Rangers at Ottawa Senators (105, 5)

The Senators left the Big Apple with a 1-1 split in their series against the Rangers, but the Game 2 win may have cost them their captain. Daniel Alfredsson is questionable for Game 3 on Monday after taking a high elbow to the side of his head.

"It's tough for us to lose (Alfredsson). Hopefully he should be fine," defenseman Erik Karlsson told the Toronto Sun. "He's still the same old happy guy. We'll see how he feels and it's probably going to be a game-time decision."

Ottawa's offense is more than Alfie. Karlsson and Jason Spezza can carry the weight but the way the series is heading -- with this rough and tough stuff -- better suits the Rangers.

        Pick: Rangers

St. Louis Blues at San Jose Sharks (-115, 5)

Having two goalies is usually a bad thing, but not for the Blues. St. Louis lost its starting goalie Jaroslav Halak to a lower body injury in Game 2 and he will miss Game 3 because of the injury too.

What a luxury it is to turn to their backup Brian Elliott, the league's leader in goals-against average. Elliott stopped all 17 shots in relief of Halak in Game 2.

Things got pretty messy in the third period of Game 2. The two teams combined for over 100 penalty minutes in the third period only. That's just the kind of game a Ken Hitchcock-coached team wants to play.

St. Louis has won five of its last six against San Jose.

        Pick: Blues

Hot lines: Monday's best MLB bets
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Rays at Boston Red Sox (-115, 9.5)

Don't ask us what subluxation of a shoulder means. We know it's bad and it's what put Red Sox outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury on the disabled list.

"We'll try to get him back as soon as possible with the best possible care known to man," manager Bobby Valentine told the Boston Globe. "I haven't heard the word 'surgery' mentioned, but I said, whatever the best possible care is, that's what he'll get."

Ellsbury was off to a modest start but he was arguably Boston's best player a year ago. Carl Crawford would be the guy to step in and bat leadoff with Ellsbury out, but the former Tampa Bay Ray is on the disabled list with a sore wrist.

Boston's offense needs a table setter, so this could be a lucky break for visiting Tampa Bay.

              Pick: Rays

Philadelphia Phillies at San Francisco Giants (-105, 6)

Fear the beard no more. Brian Wilson is on the injury shelf, and the Giants aren't expecting to see their closer shutting the door in the ninth inning anytime soon.

The reports say that Wilson has structural damage in his right elbow. San Fran plans on getting another MRI done on the elbow this week but the early prognosis isn't good.

"He's a huge impact player," teammate Barry Zito said of Wilson, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. "He can change the whole dynamic of a team, both on and off the field. It's a huge blow."

It's unclear who'll replace Wilson as the club's closer. It is clear that Tim Lincecum will need to pitch much better than he has in his first two starts for the Giants to top the Phillies on Monday.

              Pick: Phillies

Pick 'n' roll: Monday's best NBA bets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Hawks at Toronto Raptors (4.5, 182.5)

Hawks star Joe Johnson didn't show up for Sunday's shocking 102-86 loss to Toronto, going 2 for 12 for seven points.

Atlanta was embarrassed by a cast of castoffs that included Alan Anderson (16 points), Ben Uzoh (10 points, 3 assists) and Justin Dentmon (10 points, 4 assists). All three of those Raptors are on 10-day contracts.

“Guys are just playing the right way, playing together, playing with a purpose,” Toronto coach Dwane Casey said. “You’ve got guys who don’t want to go down without a fight. Atlanta’s one of the top teams in the NBA and they came out and performed.”

Atlanta (35-25) should respond in a big way on the back end of this home-and-home.

The Hawks are 4-0 ATS in their last four road games, 10-4 ATS in their last 14 meetings with the Raptors, and 6-1 ATS in their last seven visits to Toronto.

                    Pick: Hawks

Dallas Mavericks at Utah Jazz (NA)

The Jazz has no margin for error as it hosts the Mavericks on Monday. Utah has lost back-to-back games and sits in 10th place in the Western Conference, 1 1/2 games behind the eighth and final playoff position with only five games left.

Utah has blown fourth-quarter leads in devastating losses to the New Orleans Hornets and Memphis Grizzlies. Coach Tyrone Corbin has elected to sell the losses as a time to learn. “We aren’t out it by any stretch of the imagination,” Corbin said. “Plus, we want to continue to grow as a team. These experiences this time of year are invaluable to us.”

Dallas lost in overtime to the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday but remains in sixth place.

Forward Dirk Nowitzki is in a shooting slump as the season winds down. Nowitzki hit just 9 of 28 shots in the 112-108 loss to the Lakers and is shooting 37.9 percent (36 of 95) over the last five games. Nowitzki still managed 24 points and 14 rebounds against Los Angeles but was unhappy with his performance. “I just have to make some shots,” Nowitzki said. “I was more of a volume shooter and that’s not the way I want to play. I want to be an efficient scorer. I’ve got some work to do.”

The Mavs are 6-1 ATS in the last seven meetings.

                    Pick: Mavericks
