Sunday’s betting tips: SF closer Wilson out for season?

    Weather to watch

Cleveland Indians at Kansas City Royals – 26 mph winds are expected to be blowing out to left-center field.

    Who’s hot

NBA: Chicago has covered in 10 of its last 14 road games.

NBA: New York is 19-7 against the spread in its last 26 home games.

NHL: Los Angeles has won 11 of its last 16.

NHL: New Jersey has won seven in a row.

MLB: Milwaukee is 8-2 in Chris Narveson’s last 10 starts.

    Who’s not

NBA: Miami is 1-4 against the spread in its last five road games.

NBA: The under is 1-7 in Detroit’s last eight.

NHL: Vancouver has won just two of its last seven road games.

NHL: Florida has one win in its last seven.

MLB: Pittsburgh has lost each of Kevin Correia’s last five starts.

    Key stat

1 – Manchester United has just one Premier League loss in 2012 – Wednesday’s shocking 1-0 defeat at the hands of Wigan. United tops the league table with 79 points but is now just two points clear of Manchester City. The Red Devils are set as -500 favorites at home to Aston Villa (+1150) Sunday. The draw is priced at +460.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Daniel Sedin, Vancouver Canucks - Sedin skated on his own for an hour Friday, but remains out indefinitely with a concussion. Word out of Vancouver Saturday was that he won’t be available during the team’s series with Los Angeles. Sedin led Vancouver with 30 goals before being elbowed by Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith on March 21. Keith was suspended five games for the hit. Down 2-0 to the Kings, the Canucks are set as +100 underdogs for Game 3 in L.A.

    Game of the day

Dallas Mavericks at Los Angeles Lakers (N/A)

    Notable quotable

"It's making hard work out of sex." – Dallas Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle on his team having a difficult time closing out leads lately. The Mavs had a 24-point in its win over Portland before allowing the Trail Blazers to cover as 3.5-point underdogs on Friday. Dallas covered in its win at Golden State on Thursday, but just barely after leading by 19.

    Notes and tips

San Francisco Giants closer Brian Wilson is likely headed for surgery on his right elbow after an MRI revealed structural damage and an issue with the ligament Friday. If he does have the procedure, it could spell the end of his season. Manager Bruce Bochy and athletic trainer Dave Groeschner said Saturday the club will seek at least one other opinion from renowned orthopedist Dr. James Andrews. "It doesn't look very good right now." Bochy said. "Likely he's looking at surgery." The 30-year-old Wilson lead the bigs with 48 saves in 2010 and has already had one Tommy John surgery during his college days.

Golden State Warriors forward David Lee has been ruled out indefinitely due to a groin injury. Lee underwent an MRI exam on Friday that revealed the severity of the injury and was shut down until he is fully healed. With only eight games remaining, Lee's season could be over. Lee, who will turn 29 on April 29, is averaging 20.1 points and 9.6 rebounds for Golden State, which has been eliminated from postseason contention.

New York Mets third baseman David Wright returned to the lineup for Saturday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies and crushed a home run in his first trip to the plate. Wright finished with three hits in a 5-0 win after he missed three games with a broken right pinkie finger. Before the injury he was hitting .583.

Toronto Raptors point guard Jose Calderon will miss his second straight game Sunday against the Atlanta Hawks. Calderon also did not play in Friday's game as a precautionary reason to allow his stitched-up eye to heal. He was hurt in Wednesday's loss to New Jersey when he was elbowed in the face. Calderon is averaging 10.5 points and 8.8 assists this season. The Raptors are set as 9.5-point underdogs.

      Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- Giants' closer Brian Wilson has damaged elbow, may need surgery to fix it. Very bad news for San Francisco.

-- Hornets' owner Tom Benson wants to bring the Jazz nickname back to New Orleans; not sure how much they'll like that in Utah.

-- Rumor mill has Richard Pitino replacing Isiah Thomas as coach down at Florida International; now thats worlds colliding.

-- Todd Helton hit a dramatic walk-off HR in the rain as Colorado beat the Diamondbacks, x-x. First walk-off homer for Helton since 2009.

-- Brian Bickell scored GW goal 10:36 into OT, after the Blackhawks tied the game with 0:05.5 left, as Chicago evened their series vs Phoenix 1-1. The NHL playoffs are freakin' awesome.

-- As an A's fan since 1965, I have such mixed feelings about Moneyball; now thats it on Starz, it'll be on my TV every night. Still trying to decide if thats a good thing or a bad thing.

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday..........

      13) Dwyane Wade's career earnings, just in the NBA, not counting his many endorsements: $85,466.666: he could use extra cash from the Olympics.

      12) Would it be legal for Saint/Hornets' owner Tom Benson to offer his QB Drew Brees a small ownership stake in the NBA team, as part of his next contract with the Saints?

      11) Penguins outscored Philadelphia 6-1 in first period of Games 1-2 in this year's NHL playoffs, but managed to lose both games. Unusual.

      10) Former NFL LB Teddy Bruschi, who does good work on ESPN and has also recovered from a stroke, is running in the Boston Marathon Monday.

      9) Lost in the Bobby Petrino debasco down in Arkansas is fact that Paul Petrino is Arkansas' new offensive coordinator, and he hasn't been fired. Will be tough working under his brother's dark cloud all season.

      8) Angels have used seven different lineups in their first eight games. Not sure if that indicates their depth, or their inability to settle on a 3B.

      7) UConn's Alex Oriahki is transferring from Storrs to Missouri, and I'm thinking he can play right away. Good for Frank Haith.

      6) David Wright is playing with a broken pinky; he hit first pitch he saw Saturday for a homer. Mets are off to an excellent 6-2 start.

      5) Mississippi State charged $25 for its spring football game, but that also included a ticket to a Sugarland concert-- I'm assuming they're a popular southern band, seeing as I've never heard of them. Missouri charged $3 for its game; would love to know how that figure got decided upon.

      4) This week, a 23-year old guy in North Carolina got a hole-in-one on par 4, 373 yard hole. He still shot 86. Longest recognized ace was a 448-yard hole out on Maui. My longest recorded ace came through a windmill, so I've got that going for me.

      3) Someone has to explain to me how Tim McCarver is getting inducted into the Hall of Fame as an announcer; its like putting Matt Stairs in as a player, just because he stuck around for a long time. McCarver is no longer good and hasn't been good for several years.

      2) So ex-Padre Aaron Harang got beat by his old team Sunday, then comes out Friday night, again against San Diego, gives up a leadoff single, before striking out next nine Padres in a row, then he gave up a home run. Weird.

Tom Seaver holds the record with 10 consecutive strikeouts; Jim Deshaies (8) holds the record for most K's at the start of a game.

      1) Why are the fine folks at SMU interviewing Larry Brown? Brown's age isn't a factor, since he would leave the job before he got too much older, anyway. You're offering $2M a year; go hire someone really good.

        Armadillo's Write-Up

        Sunday, April 15

Predators @ Red Wings-- Teams split pair of games in Music City, with team that led after first period going into shell in last two periods and then hanging on. Detroit lost five of last eight games. three of last four at home. Nashville won five of last seven games, allowing total of five goals in the wins. Teams split eight games in this year's season series, with Predators winning four of last seven games in Motor City. Nashville was 0-12 on power play in first two games, Red Wings 2-10.

Penguins @ Flyers-- Pittsburgh outscored Flyers 6-1 in first period in first two games, still lost both, as Flyers are now 6-2 vs Pens this season; not often an NHL team scored five goals in a home playoff games and loses, but Penguins allowed eight goals on 31 shots and head east down 2-0. Philly is 2-3 with man advantage in series, Pittsburgh 2-7. Flyers won nine of last 11 games overall, have six third period goals in Games 1-2, but are 3-4 vs Pittsburgh in last seven series games in this building.

Devils @ Panthers-- New Jersey came out and dominated first period in Game 1, outshooting hosts 26-6, outscoring them 3-0, handing Florida its ninth loss in last 11 games- this is Panthers' first playoff appearance in 12 years- it showed. New Jersey is 21-13 in Miami, 3-1 in last four; over last three years, Devils are now 7-6 overall when facing Florida. There were only 40 faceoffs in Game 1, so lot less stoppages than in most games (next lowest Game 1 had 58). Panthers split last six games in Jersey, but they need win here to show they belong.

Canucks @ Kings-- LA hasn't won playoff series since 2001; they're 1-5 in first round series since losing in '93 Finals, but they head home up 2-0 and are 7-2 in last nine games at Staples. Vancouver won the Presidents' Cup last two years, but now has immense pressure on it, losing first two games at home (both 4-2), as both games went over total (under was 7-0-1 in previous eight games in series). Canucks are 0-10 on power play in series; Los Angeles 3-12. Vancouver lost five of its last seven road games overall.

NHL Playoffs on NBC: What bettors need to know
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nashville Predators at Detroit Red Wings (-149, 5)

        Series: Tied 1-1

This series got a little chippy, and certainly gained an edge, during Game 2, when Nashville defenseman Shea Weber and Detroit forward Todd Bertuzzi dropped the gloves. So, now that we know there’s a genuine hate on both sides, we should have a dandy Game 3.

        Under the radar, as always

Detroit didn't get the kind of start it wanted in Nashville, but the Game 2 win was just what the doctor ordered, and it was typical Detroit. The Red Wings have stars, but the fabric and the culture of Hockeytown truly lies in the unsung players that have dotted Red Wings rosters for the last 20 years.

And this year’s team has plenty of them. In Game 2, two of them stepped up as center Cory Emmerton, who had just six goals and 10 points this season, and defenseman Ian White, who had seven and 32, each scored in the 3-2 road victory. White had just 13:07 time on the ice, but also posted two blocks and two hits.

        Pressure on Pekka

Through two games, Nashville goaltender Pekka Rinne is right about where he should be - numbers wise. The standout, who posted a 2.39 GAA in the regular season, has made 49 saves and allowed five goals.

But will it be enough? Rinne is now walking into enemy territory and, though the Predators are slowly building up a playoff backbone, there’s still a long way to go, top to bottom.

The biggest cause for concern should be Game 2. In Game 1, he saw plenty of rubber, and made 35 saves. But Friday, he made just 14 stops and looked shaky at times. Hockey bettors will truly see what he’s made of in Detroit these next two games.

        Valtteri the victor

The postseason, as any hockey fan will tell you, is a war of attrition, and it's not just the flash-and-dash goal scorers who lead the way. It's the grit and grind, as well, and those who fight through the fatigue who succeed.

Detroit center Valtteri Filppula has plenty of skill and is far from a mucker or grinder. But in Game 2, he played the kind of game befit of the latter.

He posted three shots and four blocks and even picked up a two-minte minor, all in a 26-shift effort that spanned 18:38 of ice time. It’s the kind of effort that will resonate with head coach Mike Babcock, and so you can expect the same kind of playing time in Game 3.

        History

The Red Wings have won four of their last five Sunday games, and have won 19 of their last 26 first-round playoff contests. These two teams have gone 0-3-3 over/under in their last six meetings.

Pittsburgh Penguins at Philadelphia Flyers (+106, 6)

        Series: Flyers lead 2-0

Perhaps a change of scenery and a chance to get out of town, will help jumpstart the slumping Penguins, who just can’t seem to come up with the defensive plan to hold leads and stop the Flyers. Pittsburgh’s Dan Bylsma has been outcoached severely by Philadelphia’s Peter Laviolette, but opportunity knocks in Game 3.

        He’s off the Marc

The numbers were so good in the regular season, it was hard for anyone to see this slide coming. Marc-Andre Fleury went 42-17-4 with three shutouts and a 2.36 GAA. He had already been to two Stanley Cup Finals, and won one of them.

But something's off right now and the Penguins simply have no answers. Fleury has allowed 11 goals in two home games and has stopped just 45 shots. The Flyers can come at you in waves and they get offense from all four of their lines, so Fleury can never truly relax out there, and it's showing.

He has a .804 save percentage and if you combine the regular season and postseason overall, the Penguins have now lost six of eight to Philadelphia.

        Clutch Claude

Claude Giroux, the Flyers' best player, didn't get much hype leading up to the series, because, quite frankly, he's not Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin. But the forward nearly reached 100 points this regular season (93) and simply had a game for the ages Friday night.

In 31 shifts, covering 22:30 of ice time, he had three goals, six points and was a plus-4. He threw 10 shots on net and walked away with .517 faceoff percentage. Not bad.

Giroux won't win the award, but will get some mention for the Hart Trophy this year for his regular-season work. But so far, his postseason work has been even better.

        Tracking Sid

Clearly, Crosby won't sit down this weekend and tell you that he's playing well or that he's on top of his game. With his team facing a 0-2 hole, there are bigger, clubwide problems for him to focus on.

Crosby is producing for the Penguins in this series. In two games, he has two goals and four points. There's plenty of work ahead though. He definitely needs more shots on net - he has just four in seven periods - and as always, his toughness quotient remains a question mark.

One thing is for sure: His stamina is back. He had 24 shifts Friday night, covering 20:34 of ice time in the 8-5 loss.

        History

Think over. Both teams can fly up and down this ice and in two games, they have combined for 19 goals. The over is 3-0-1 in the last four installments of this rivalry. Dating back to March 18, the Penguins have lost four of the last five to the Flyers.

Ice picks: Sunday's best NHL bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nashville Predators at Detroit Red Wings (-150, 5)

The Detroit Red Wings got just what they wanted in the first two games of their Western Conference quarterfinal series with the Nashville Predators – a split on the road. The Red Wings did it the hard way, rebounding to win Game 2 in Nashville after dropping the opener to seize home-ice advantage in the series.

The Predators will have to find a way to win in Detroit, something they have done only 11 times in the last 40 meetings (11-27-2) in the Motor City.

Nashville could not recover from falling into an early 2-0 hole Friday, and one of the main reasons was the ineptitude of its power play. The Predators ranked No. 1 in the league with the man advantage during the regular season, but they were 0 for 6 Friday and have been stymied on 12 power-play chances in the series.

Nashville played an overall better game Friday, limiting the Red Wings to only 17 shots – the second-fewest allowed in franchise postseason history.

The Predators also outshot Detroit for only the second time in 14 postseason meetings between the teams, but Pekka Rinne surrendered three goals on the first 10 shots.

        Pick: Under

Sunday Night Baseball: Angels at Yankees
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Angels at New York Yankees (-175, 10)

A game after getting blanked 5-0, the Angels returned fire with a 7-1 win in Game 2 Saturday. Los Angeles hit three home runs, including a three-run shot from Howard Kendrick, to snap a three-game losing skid. After scoring a total of 22 runs during their four-game winning streak, the Yankees offense managed only one run on six hits while leaving 10 runners on base.

Albert Pujols, who entered the weekend hitting just .222, went 2-for-5 with an RBI double Saturday. He’s gone 32 at-bats without a home run, his longest drought to start a season. Derek Jeter was the best bat for New York, recording two hits to give him 3,101 on his career. He’s hitting .361 with one home run and three RBIs to start the season.

            TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, ESPN

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels RH Jerome Williams (2011: 4-0, 3.68 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Ivan Nova (1-0, 2.57 ERA)

Williams was slowed by a hamstring injury in the spring but made two rehab starts with Class-A Inland Empire after a stint on the 15-day disabled list. He is making his Yankee Stadium debut under the Sunday night spotlight. Williams was undefeated in six starts for the Halos last August.

Nova picked up where he left off last season, giving up only two runs on 10 hits with seven strikeouts through seven innings in his first start of 2012. The right-hander was a pleasant surprise for the Yankees, winning 16 games last year. He’s 1-1 with a 2.57 ERA in 12 career innings versus Los Angeles.

            TRENDS:

            - New York has won eight of Nova's last 10 starts.
            - The under has cashed in four of New York's last five.
            - Los Angeles has won Jerome Williams' last five trips to the hill.

            WALK-OFFS:

            1. Sunday is Jackie Robinson Day across the majors, with every player wearing Robinson’s retired No. 42, except for Yankees closer Mariano Rivera, who is the only player – and the last player – to wear No. 42.

            2. The Angels return home for a four-game set with Oakland starting Monday. The Yankees welcome Minnesota for four games, beginning Monday, before traveling to rival Boston.

            3. Jeter, with 3,101 career hits, is just eight hits behind Dave Winfield for 32nd on the all-time MLB hits list.

Texas Rangers at Minnesota Twins (-175, 8.5)

Contract negotiations between Josh Hamilton’s agent and the Texas Rangers are ongoing and that’s about all the slugger wants to know about it.

"It's good that I don't know all the details," Hamilton told reporters earlier this week. "It keeps me from being weird around front office people, too, if I really don't know what's going on until it gets very serious. I don't think it's at that point. I think they want to get an idea, each side, and feel things out. We've expressed what we'd like to do contract-wise."

The contract talk certainly doesn’t seem to be bothering Hamilton. He had three hits and was a triple away from the cycle in Saturday’s 6-2 win over the Minnesota Twins, swatting his third homer of the season in the third inning.

Hamilton is now hitting a team-best .378 early this season and the 13 hits the Rangers banged out Saturday was just what the offense needed.

            Pick: Over

Cincinnati Reds at Washington Nationals (-115, 8)

Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips is itching to get back in the lineup to help the team’s scuffling offense. He might get his wish Sunday.

Phillips felt his left hamstring was good to go for Saturday’s game, but manager Dusty Baker decided to hold him out another day.

"Seeing the way we're playing and with me on the bench, I feel like I need to go in there," Phillips told MLB.com. "I'm not 100 percent, but I can play. I can go out there and perform, regardless of the fact. No one on the team is 100 percent. I could go out there, play, and be comfortable.”

The Reds definitely need a spark. They were averaging just 2.75 runs per game heading into Saturday’s game, ranking 29th in the bigs and then managed only two hits in a 4-1 loss.

Phillips will give them a boost as they try to avoid the series sweep.

            Pick: Reds

Chicago Bulls at Detroit Pistons (8, 184)

Barring a stunning collapse, the Chicago Bulls are on their way to wrapping up the No. 1 seed and home-court advantage throughout the Eastern Conference.

Holding a 3.5-game lead over Miami with only seven to play, the Bulls can work on ironing out any wrinkles as they prepare to visit one of their favorite opponents, the Detroit Pistons, on Sunday night. Chicago has beaten the Pistons 14 consecutive times, including three double-digit victories this season.

Derrick Rose showed the effects of missing 13 of the previous 14 games, scoring a season-low two points on a horrid 1-for-13 shooting performance against Miami. Per usual, the Bulls still found a way to win, showing why they are 16-7 without their start point guard in the lineup.

Backup C.J. Watson had 16 points and nine assists and Kyle Korver had another exceptional effort off the bench. Korver has scored a combined 31 points in his last two games, drilling eight of 11 3-point attempts.

Detroit was playing its best ball of the season, winning 17 of 30 games, until going into a tailspin in the past 10 days and losing four of five.

                  Pick: Bulls

Portland Trail Blazers at Sacramento Kings (-2.5, 207.5)

The Sacramento Kings are a team without a home. Word came out Friday that the agreement reached last month to keep the team in Sacramento with a new arena had fallen through, leaving the team’s future up in the air.

That, plus a season-high seven-game losing streak, could have the fans in a sour mood when the Kings host the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday. The Blazers have dropped three of four.

Portland does not have any arena problems but it does appear to have given up on the season by opting to have LaMarcus Aldridge undergo hip surgery. The Blazers started out hot but sold off a pair of starters and dismissed coach Nate McMillan at the trade deadline, signaling to many that the team was looking toward the future.

J.J. Hickson, who was let go by the Kings last month, has stepped into Aldridge’s spot in the starting lineup and is averaging 14.0 points for his new team.

Six of the last seven meetings between these teams have played under and this total looks high.

                  Pick: Under
