Saturday’s betting tips: Cubs-Cards umpire cashing under bets

    Weather to watch

Cleveland Indians at Kansas City Royals – 21 mph winds are expected to blow out to left-center field.

    Who’s hot

NBA: Golden State has covered in 10 of its last 13 road games.

NBA: Memphis is 4-1 against the spread in its last five.

NHL: The under is 39-19-4 in the last 64 meetings between Boston and Washington.

NHL: San Jose has won 11 of its last 16 games in St. Louis.

MLB: Phil Cuzzi, the scheduled plate umpire for Saturday’s Cubs-Cards matchup has seen the under go 30-14-6 in his last 50.

    Who’s not

NBA: New Jersey is 3-8 against the spread in its last 11 home games against Boston.

NBA: Minnesota is 1-9 against the spread in its last 10.

NHL: Ottawa has lost four straight.

NHL: Chicago has lost four in a row against Phoenix.

MLB: Pittsburgh is 5-11 in its last 16 games against San Francisco.

    Key stat

6 – The Ottawa Senators have scored just six times over their last four games – all losses. During the regular season, the Senators owned the fourth-best offense in the NHL, averaging three goals per game.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Gerald Wallace, New Jersey Nets – The Nets ruled Wallace out of Friday’s game early as the 6-foot-7 forward deals with a hamstring issue and said he would be questionable for Saturday’s contest against the Boston Celtics. Wallace is averaging 13.6 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.

    Game of the day

Phoenix Suns at San Antonio Spurs (-9, 208.5)

    Notable quotable

"As a baseball player, going there to work, it's a dump. I mean, it's old. It does have a great feel and nostalgia, but at the end of the day, I'd rather be at a good facility where I can get my work in. A place where I can go hit in the cage, where I have space and it's a little more comfortable to come to work. You're packed in like sardines there. It's hard to get your work in. ... You have to go to their weight room if you want to lift. From a fan's perspective, it's probably pretty cool to go see a game at a historic park. But from a player's point of view, it's not a place where you want to go to work." – Tampa Bay Rays DH Luke Scott telling MLB.com about Fenway Park. The Rays had won five of their last six games at Fenway before getting hammered 12-2 on Friday.

    Notes and tips

The Phoenix Coyotes overcame the loss of 35-goal scorer Radim Vrbata to earn a Game 1 win over Chicago, but his status for Game 2 is questionable. He has been listed as day-to-day with the dreaded upper-body injury after playing just 30 seconds in the first game of the series. Reports out of Phoenix indicate he did work out with the team Friday.

Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost is trying to be patient with closer Jonathan Broxton, who blew his first save of the year Wednesday. It was pretty ugly. Broxton came on in the 12th with a 4-3 lead over Oakland only to hit a pair of batters, issue two walks, pick up an error, and allow two runs in the 5-4 loss. “I talked to Broxton today, and he just lost command of his fastball,” Yost said. “But he’s a two-time All-Star, and he has really rebounded nicely from this arm surgery. He’s got his velocity back up to 97, 98, with an 86-, 87-mph slider, which is a killer, hard slider.”

Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard was diagnosed by a doctor in Los Angeles with a herniated disc in his lower back, a team spokesman said Friday. Howard flew out earlier Friday to receive a second opinion from Dr. Robert Watkins. His initial diagnosis was back spasms. Howard is expected to fly back to Orlando where he will undergo treatment on Saturday. There is no timetable for his return. Howard is averaging 20.6 points and 14.5 rebounds in 54 games this season.

      Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- Matt Cain allowed one baserunner, a two-out single in the sixth by
McDonald, the opposing pitcher, as Giants won their home opener 5-0.

-- Bartolo Colon allowed only four baserunners in seven shutout innings, helped by tremendous outfield defense, and the A's get back to .500 with a 4-0 win at Safeco.

-- Dwight Howard has a herniated disk in his back, will miss the next two weeks. He has a sore back; his coach thinks he's a pain in the neck.

-- Of the 26 players invited to NFL Draft on April 26, 12 of them played in the SEC. Think about that for a second.......

-- Too bad the Kings are going to leave Sacramento, but enough with these teams ripping the public off for new arenas. Mayor Johnson thought he had a deal with the Maloofs, but maybe they never wanted a deal.

-- Anyone know where Bernie Fine goes to get his reputation back? Now that his Syracuse accusers are turning out to be liars/frauds, can he get his job back? Lost earnings? Where's the national media now?

      ****************

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud..........

      13) LSU hired North Texas coach and former LSU assistant Johnny Jones to replace the departed Trent Johnson, who did a good job of restocking the shelves in Baton Rouge. There had been rumors LSU was going after Tubby Smith, but Jones has LSU ties and will do well in Baton Rouge.

      12) A's TV analyst Ray Fosse brings up a point I haven't thought about; why not a stat for catchers blocking balls in the dirt? They have lot of new defensive metrics for players out in the field; seems like it would be fairly simple to define how many bases a catchers saves blocking pitches.

      11) Thanks to MLB schedule makers for giving the A’s three dates against Felix Hernandez in the season’s first 16 days. Terrific. Can't be that much fun for Hernandez either; harder to deceive hitters you see every week.

      10) Reason #2,593 I’m glad I don’t have children: What if your kid comes up to you and asks for money and you know he’s taking it to the **** to pay $11 to watch The Three Stooges? There are worse things, of course, but I’d hate to have to bite my tongue on that one.

      9) Charlotte Bobcats are 0-9 vs spread at home, if they play on road the next night. Hard to believe anyone is ever 0-9 against the spread at home, in any scenario.

      8) Irony Department: Tim Floyd lost a lot of games coaching the Bulls after he took over for Phil Jackson; most Chicago fans probably don’t have much good to say about him, but this year’s Bulls are getting lot of help from Taj Gibson, an athletic shot blocker who played at USC. His coach with the Trojans? Tim Floyd.

      7) Its been 135 races since Dale Earnhardt Jr won a NASCAR race; that’s a long time.

      6) Add NCAA investigator to long list of jobs I’d never want; supposedly they had to go thru over 900,000 text messages from Baylor staffers while investigating the school’s two basketball programs.

That’s a lot of LOLs, though after this Arkansas/Petrino debasco, no one seems overly concerned with excessive texting.

      5) Ottawa Senators brought zero momentum into the playoffs, scoring four goals in losing their last three games; now they’ve lost four games in row, scoring six goals. They don’t start scoring some goals, they’ll be on the golf course before they know what hit them.

      4) Saints’ owner Tom Benson bought the New Orleans Hornets for $338M, which seems like a low price; am guessing that’s the end of the Hornets-to-Seattle rumors. Now its time for the Kings-to-Seattle rumors.

      3) Justin Verlander has lasted 6+ innings in each of his last 44 starts; that’s being dependable.

      2) Just guessing here, but this probably hasn’t been the best week to be an aeronautical engineer in North Korea.

      1) Whats with the wave of non-players taking over as NBA head coaches? Miami-Chicago-Detroit-Indiana-Portland all have coaches we had never heard of before they got their current job.

Going to be interested to see how much better the quality of NBA games is once the playoff start and teams get to rest and practice in between games.

NASCAR betting: Samsung Mobile 500 preview and picks

After a one-week respite, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series returns with a primetime Saturday night show at Texas Motor Speedway, the Samsung Mobile 500.

The nod for favorites this week has to go to the drivers in the Roush-Fenway Racing stable. The team is an eight-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series winner at Texas Motor Speedway - more than double the victory total of its two closest rivals, Joe Gibbs Racing and Hendrick Motorsports, who have six combined.

The leader of the pack right now at Roush is Matt Kenseth. The last time the Sprint Cup series raced at night was the season-opening Daytona 500. Although rescheduled, Kenseth shined under the lights at Daytona and there’s no reason why he won’t shine again Saturday. Kenseth is the defending winner of this race and has two career victories at Texas.

"Texas gives us several lines to race on, so it’s just turned into a place where drivers can take the high line or the low line when it comes to racing for position," said Kenseth. "Texas is just a great fast track with the challenge of relatively flat straightaways and high-banked turns. So it’s a place that can be challenging, but I always look forward to racing there twice a year."

The other Roush driver stepping into the role of favorite this week is Carl Edwards. After some less-than-stellar racing, he’s looking forward to getting back to the front of the field. He leads the top 12 drivers in the standings with three wins overall at Texas and finished second there in the fall.

This week’s spoiler could be the biggest story of the season. Dale Earnhardt Jr. is on a 135-race winless streak, but has the feel of a driver who could win at any time. He has three Top-3 finishes (and four Top 10s overall), which has moved him to second in the points.

The last time he was this high in the standings at this stage of the season was 2008, the same year he picked up his most recent race victory. And the last time Earnhardt Jr. held the points lead was October 2004, the year he won his first Cup race. That first win came at Texas Motor Speedway and he could find himself visiting Victory Lane again, for the first time in nearly four years Saturday night.

        Head-to-head

Tony Stewart vs. Ryan Newman: Stewart won this race in the fall and has surprised many with his strong start to the season. He has two wins but in the races he hasn’t won, Stewart has struggled. His teammate and employee, Ryan Newman, is coming off an upset win at Martinsville and has won at Texas as well. His boss was victorious here last fall, while Newman finished in 11th. Look for the same result Saturday, as Stewart finishes ahead of Newman.

Jimmie Johnson vs. Kasey Kahne: Both Hendrick Motorsports drivers will look to upstage Earnhardt Jr., but each seems to be lacking that extra little pop that can propel them into contender status. Both have wins at Texas and both want the distinction of winning the 200th race for Hendrick. While they’ll probably fall short of that goal, look for Johnson to at least finish in front of Kahne.

        Bottom Line

Sixteen of the 22 races have been won from a Top-10 starting position. Only one has been won from the pole - Kasey Kahne in 2006. Matt Kenseth started 31st en route to his victory at Texas in 2002, the deepest in the field that a race winner has started.

        Picks

        Matt Kenseth (+800)
        Carl Edwards (+800)
        Dale Earnhardt Jr. (+1,500)

Hockey Night In Canada: NHL Playoffs betting preview
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington Capitals at Boston Bruins (-180, 5)

          Series: Bruins lead 1-0

There is plenty of offense on both benches, but defense ruled the day in Game 1 as Boston used some late magic to escape, 1-0, in overtime. Can Alex Ovechkin and Co. find a way to break through that Boston barrier?

A good omen... for both teams

There are bigger favorites in the East this season - the Penguins and Rangers among them - but if history is your cup of tea, then this series is for you. The last two times these franchises collided in the Eastern Conference playoffs, the series winner landed in the Stanley Cup Finals.

In 1990, when Boston defeated Washington, the Bruins lost to the Edmonton Oilers in the final round. And in 1998, when Washington defeated Boston, the Capitals lost to the Detroit Red Wings with a Cup on the line. We’re not saying that's going to happen again, but it says somewhere that the third time is a charm, right?

          Banking on Braden

There are no moral victories in the postseason, but the Capitals have to be pleased with the effort of third-string goaltender Braden Holtby, who made his playoff debut because of injuries to Tomas Vokoun and Michal Neuvirth. Holtby stopped 29 shots in the road loss, many of them acrobatic. And in the ultimate sports cliche, clearly he "gave his team a chance to win."

Holtby, 21, went 4-2-1 in the regular season and has played in just 21 NHL games. But Vokoun’s groin injury and Neuvirth's left leg injury has given him a golden opportunity and, despite the Game 1 loss, he appears to be making the most of it.

          It’s Tyler Time

Consider Boston forward Tyler Seguin off and running in his sophomore postseason. Though he didn't score as the Bruins won their third consecutive playoff game dating back to last year's Stanley Cup Finals, he did take 22 shifts and finished with 17:30 in playing time. He fired five shots - the team leader - at Holtby in Game 1 and played with the aggression to carry this team.

Seguin, in and out of the lineup in his rookie season, took off this year, finishing with 29 goals and 67 points.

          History

The Bruins, going back to the regular season, have now won three in a row and five of the last six encounters with the Capitals. Three of the last four meetings between these two teams have gone under, as well as 21 of the last 28.

Ottawa Senators at New York Rangers (-170, 5)

          Series: Rangers lead 1-0

A lot of the talk before the postseason began centered on the season series and how Ottawa, with a 3-1 record against New York, seemed to have it all figured out. Well, the playoffs are a different season for a reason, and the Rangers showed in Game 1 with a 4-2 win.

          Back to business on Broadway

If the Rangers are going to get back in the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 1994, they have to rely on the big boys - the stars who can score goals. And if Game 1 was any indication, they are ready to do so.

Marian Gaborik, Ryan Callahan and Brad Richards all scored Thursday, as New York rolled up a 4-0 lead before letting the Senators breathe a little bit late in the game. It was the perfect start on Broadway for a team that stumbled a bit down the stretch, and lost out on the Presidents' Trophy to Vancouver.

Artem Anisimov chipped in with two assists and the Rangers finished with 31 shots on Ottawa's shell-shocked goaltender Craig Anderson.

          Mistimed slump

Daniel Alfredsson sat in the locker room last Saturday and talked about how the second season might mean a clean, fresh start for the Senators. The veteran forward was still soaking in a 4-2 loss to New Jersey at the time - Ottawa’s third in a row to end the year - and he was searching for answers as Ottawa was about to slip down to the No. 8 spot in the East.

Later on that night, after results of the remaining East games trickled in, the Senators indeed fell to last place and drew the best team in the conference in the first round. And on Thursday, Ottawa showed no signs of getting out of this funk at Madison Square Garden.

The Sens have now lost four in a row and have not scored more than two goals in any one of those games. On Thursday, forward Jason Spezza and Alfredsson combined for 10 shots but couldn’t carry a team that was listless for long stretches and seems to have run out of gas.

It’s been a great year in Ottawa (a surprising start lifted spirits in the town, and the All-Star Game continued the mojo) but until pucks start finding the back of the net, this run might just be over.

          Boosted by Boyle

The playoffs couldn't have started any better for New York forward Brian Boyle, a player who does it all -- score, scrap, scream, you name it.

On Thursday, he lived up to his status, taking 25 shifts for 17:49 of ice time. He was a plus-1, he had two penalty minutes and three shots. And best of all, he scored a goal.

It was just a continuance of a decent year for Boyle's standards as he ended the regular season with 11 goals and 26 points. On a team with stars, he is an unsung player who carries out coach John Tortorella's plans to a T.

          History

Reason for Senators’ hope? Ottawa is still 5-1 in its last six against the Rangers in New York. And the Rangers are 4-0-1 over/under in their last five which started with a 5-3 win over Philadelphia on April 3.

Ice picks: Saturday's best NHL bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington Capitals at Boston Bruins (-180, 5)

The Boston Bruins look to take a 2-0 series lead and sweep the opening games of the series at TD Garden on Saturday afternoon.

Chris Kelly scored the lone goal at 1:18 of overtime and Tim Thomas posted his sixth career playoff shutout to lift Boston to a 1-0 victory on Thursday. Washington played a strong defensive game, but failed to mount any offense in the first two periods, only putting seven shots on goal.

Goaltending was a huge area of concern for the Capitals coming into the postseason because of injuries to Michal Neurvirth (lower body) and Tomas Vokoun (groin). Braden Holtby rose to the occasion, stopping 29 of the 30 shots he faced in Game 1.

The netminder has allowed only eight goals in his past six outings for the Capitals, including four starts where he has conceded one goal or less.

Part of the Bruins' defensive plan was to limit forward Alex Ovechkin's chances in the series. Ovechkin was held to just one shot while mostly matched up against Boston defenseman Zdeno Chara in Game 1.

Goals could be hard to come by again in Game 2.

          Pick: Under

Ottawa Senators at New York Rangers (-165, 5)

After missing the playoffs last season with a broken ankle, New York Rangers captain Ryan Callahan made his presence felt during Thursday's 4-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators.

Callahan scored his team's first goal and unleashed a game-high seven hits as the top-seeded Rangers claimed the early edge in the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series. The eighth-seeded Senators will look to respond on Saturday if they hope to return to Canada's capital with a split in the series.

While Callahan was solid, Lundqvist bordered on sensational. The likely Vezina Trophy candidate turned aside 30 shots before yielding two late third-period goals. With his 16th postseason triumph, Lundqvist pulled even with John Davidson for fourth place in the Rangers' all-time playoff wins list.

Brian Boyle has found his scoring touch, collecting his fourth goal in his last five games. Boyle had 11 tallies in the regular season.

Ottawa will be tighter in Game 2 but will still have a tough time solving Lundqvist.

          Pick: Under

Hot lines: Saturday's best MLB bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Angels at New York Yankees (-120, 9.5)

The New York Yankees’ offense looked pretty good heading into Friday’s matinee against the Angels, and that was before Alex Rodriguez got cooking.

After going just 4-for-23 in the first two series of the season, A-Rod swatted his 630th career homer and finished with three hits to pace the Yanks to a 5-0 victory. The dinger pulled Rodriguez into a tie with Ken Griffey Jr. for fifth place on the all-time list.

Rodriguez moved to the No. 3 hole in the lineup instead of his usual clean-up spot, swapping places with Robinson Cano.

“No matter where you hit, you have to just basically produce,” Rodriguez told reporters. “I know it does one thing; it presents a situation or a decision for the opposing manager each and every day. At some point, someone should get a pretty favorable matchup.”

With Hiroki Kuroda dealing, the Angels were held to only five hits Friday but should be able to get to Phil Hughes a bit.

                Pick: Over

Tampa Bay Rays at Boston Red Sox (-135, 9)

With the BoSox sliding into their home opener, Fenway Park’s 101st anniversary season, something had to give.

Josh Beckett bounced back from a dreadful start that saw him give up five homers, throwing eight strong innings while the Red Sox offense exploded in a 12-2 destruction of the Rays.

Kelly Shoppach had three hits, two RBIs, and scored three runs against his former team and Boston sent 14 batters to the plate in the eighth inning, when they pushed across eight runs.

“It was a very fortuitous game for the Red Sox, a lot of things fell in,” Rays manager Joe Maddon told reporters. “It was just one of those days. It was the Red Sox’s day.”

With Clay Buchholz and Jeremy Hellickson sharing the hill Saturday afternoon, we could see some more runs on the board. Buchholz was drilled in his first start of the year and the over has cashed in 11 of Hellickson’s last 16 road starts.

                Pick: Over

Pick 'n' roll: Saturday's best NBA bets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oddsmakers have yet to set a line for the Jazz-Grizzlies matchup. Pick should be considered an early lean.

Boston Celtics at New Jersey Nets (7, 184.5)

The aging Boston Celtics are getting their toughest test of the compacted lockout schedule with three games in three days.

After mailing in the first night at Toronto, the Celtics will be looking to rediscover their sense of urgency at the New Jersey Nets. Boston knocked off four straight playoff teams before shooting 37.5 percent against the Raptors. The Nets did the Celtics a solid by taking out the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday.

Boston had everyone anointing it as a title contender after rolling through the Indiana Pacers, 76ers, Miami Heat and Atlanta Hawks. The Celtics were within two games of the Pacers for the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference entering Friday but fell three games back with an uncharacteristically poor performance at Toronto.

Boston’s big Achilles heel is rebounding, and the Raptors exposed that by crashing the boards. The highlight lately has been Rajon Rondo, who extended his streak of double-digit assist games to 20 with 12 on Friday.

                    Pick: Under

Utah Jazz at Memphis Grizzlies (N/A)

The Memphis Grizzlies are trying to catch the Los Angeles Clippers for the fourth seed in the Western Conference, but they also have to be wary of a number of pursuers within striking distance of the No. 5 slot.

The Utah Jazz are on the outside of the playoff picture, sitting 1.5 games out of the final playoff spot as they prepare to visit the Grizzlies on Saturday night.

Memphis’ four-game winning streak was snapped at San Antonio on Thursday.

Memphis had held 11 consecutive opponents under 100 points until Thursday’s 107-97 loss to the Spurs. Zach Randolph had his fourth double-double in five games and is averaging 13.2 points and 11.4 rebounds during that stretch. After he was forced to sit out 2.5 months with a knee injury, Randolph is still not ready to rejoin the starting unit.

''Zach can come in and score anytime,” Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins said. “He's getting his double-doubles, so what else is there?''

                    Pick: Grizzlies
