Hot lines: Wednesday's best MLB bet
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Angels at Minnesota Twins (+145, 7.5)

The Twins are trying to stay calm, even though this season hasn’t started the way they had hoped.

Manager Ron Gardenhire insisted that his team’s offense was going to be better this year, now that some of his big sluggers were healthy again. However, that hasn’t happened yet. Minnesota has scored just six runs this season.

"You don't ever want to start 0-4 and put yourself in a big hole, so it's frustrating," Gardenhire told the Twins' official website. "We need to win a ballgame. But it's not the end of the world right now. We can go on a five- or six-game winning streak and we're back above .500. The game can turn quickly."

Carl Pavano climbs the hill looking to snap the skid after suffering a 4-2 loss to Baltimore in Minnesota’s season opener. Pavano gave up four runs over seven innings, striking out one.

He’ll have his work cut out for him against Jered Weaver, who threw eight shutout innings and struck out 10 in his first outing of the season.

    Pick: Under

San Francisco Giants at Colorado Rockies (+115, 8.5)

Tim Lincecum is looking to bounce back from a tough start to begin the season.

He hit the showers in the sixth inning after giving up five earned runs in San Francisco’s 5-4 loss to Arizona.

"On opening day, that's tough to take," Lincecum told reporters. "I misplaced a couple of pitches, and that was it. Giving up three runs in the first inning is not the way to start off the season."

Maybe he’ll pick up where Barry Zito left off. The veteran lefty chucked a complete-game shutout, striking out four while giving up four hits in San Francisco’s 7-0 win over Colorado Monday.

San Francisco has scored at least four runs in each of its games this season, while the Rockies are really struggling to push runs across.

    Pick: Giants

Fullcourt Report: NBA betting news and notes
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Dallas Mavericks

The defending NBA champs have had a tumultuous season. Going into their Tuesday night home game against the Kings, the Mavericks were just five games over .500 (31-26) with a losing record on the road at 11-16. Dallas has been playing without point guard Jason Kidd; he has missed four games with a strained right groin muscle.

The Mavericks lost three of those four games without Kidd on the court, with their lone ATS win came in a 95-85 win over Memphis as a 5.5-point favorite. Dallas does have some good news though as Kidd is slated to return to the lineup against Sacramento.

“He's not going to play a full menu of minutes,” head coach Rick Carlisle said. “It's pretty obvious what he means to us. In his absence, this past week, it's been very tough. So getting him back is very important.”

On a side note, the Mavericks have decided to part ways with Lamar Odom. He averaged 6.6 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 20.5 minutes per game in his 50 games as a Maverick. Those are all career-low numbers.

            Denver Nuggets

One of the deepest teams in the NBA has been severely hampered by injuries all season. The Nuggets suffered another injury on Monday night when Al Harrington left the Nuggets 123-84 win over the Warriors in the third quarter with a torn meniscus in his knee.

His loss would be a major blow to the Nuggets if he’s out for an extended time. Harrington has been one of the team’s best players and leaders all season long. He has played in all 57 games this season while averaging 14.5 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. Denver has been hit or miss against the spread lately as the Nuggets are just 5-5 ATS over their last 10 games.

The Nuggets did get Danilo Gallinari (15.2 ppg) back on Monday night after he missed the previous 10 games with a thumb injury. Head coach George Karl just wants his team to play fundamental basketball.

“My team tries to be spectacular,” Karl said. “They try to be fancy, they try to be cute. Just play solid, smart basketball and you'll win a lot of basketball games. We need to get more comfortable with solid, not spectacular.”

            Orlando Magic

This team has been plagued with more distractions recently as word leaked out that Dwight Howard wants head coach Stan Van Gundy fired. Orlando has been dealing with the uncertainly of Howard’s future all season, and things got worse at a shootaround press conference when Van Gundy revealed what he was told Howard said.

“It was weird,” Jameer Nelson said of the situation. “There is nothing you can do about it. It’s done and over with. The rest of the guys have moved on.”

Orlando was mired in a five-game losing streak when this news broke, but the Magic had won two straight games going into their Tuesday night game at Washington. Orlando went 2-0 ATS in those two games while crushing the pointspread by a whopping 34.5 points.

Howard is dealing with back spasms, and he missed Orlando’s 30-point win over the Pistons on Monday night and it will be interesting to see if the Magic play with the same purpose once he returns to the lineup.

            Utah Jazz

The Jazz received some bad news on Monday afternoon - point guard Earl Watson needs surgery to repair a torn medial meniscus in his right knee. Watson is the inspirational backbone of the team's second unit, and his loss is a major blow to the Jazz.

Utah will be without another key contributor as C.J. Miles will be sidelined for at least a week with a moderate strain of his left calf.

“They've been great for us all year,” Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin said. “We're really going to miss them.”

With Watson and Miles out, Utah becomes an extremely thin team at guard and wing because the Jazz are already missing Raja Bell and Josh Howard. In Utah’s win over the Spurs on Monday night, forward Jeremy Evans sprained his right ankle and his availability on their upcoming 3-game road trip is unknown.

Utah is just 2-4 SU and 2-3-1 ATS in their last six road games. Overall, the Jazz are just 4-6 SU and 3-6-1 ATS over their last 10 ballgames heading into Wednesday night's road game at Houston.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Game of the day: L.A. Clippers at Oklahoma City Thunder
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Clippers at Oklahoma City Thunder (-8, 196.5)

              THE STORY:
The Oklahoma City Thunder seek to maintain their position of having the best record in the Western Conference when they host the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday. Oklahoma City has a one-game lead over the San Antonio Spurs after stringing together back-to-back victories following its first three-game losing skid of the season. The Clippers are 1 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Lakers in the battle for the Pacific Division lead after losing to the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday.

TV: 8 ET, Prime Ticket (Los Angeles), Fox Sports Oklahoma

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (34-23): Forward Blake Griffin had just six rebounds in the loss to Grizzlies in his second-lowest output of the campaign. Griffin figures to be highly motivated in his return to his hometown of Oklahoma City after struggling badly in his visit earlier this season. Griffin scored a season-low seven points as Los Angeles lost by 23 points. Griffin is averaging just 7.0 rebounds in two games against the Thunder this season. Griffin is averaging 22.7 points and 10.2 rebounds in six career games against Oklahoma City.

ABOUT THE THUNDER (42-15): Guard Russell Westbrook had 26 points in Monday’s 109-89 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks but the real stars were guard Thabo Sefolosha and forward Serge Ibaka. Sefolosha scored 14 points but did his real damage on the defensive end, recording a career-high seven steals and holding Bucks guard Monta Ellis to nine points on 3-of-12 shooting. “Thabo was all over, he was basically a one-man wrecking crew,” Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. “He just caused havoc on the entire defensive end of the floor.” Ibaka blocked five shots, including four in the opening quarter as Oklahoma City built a 17-point lead.

              TRENDS:

              - Los Angeles is 7-3 against the spread in its last 10.
              - The Thunder are 8-19 against the spread in their last 27 meetings with the Clips.
              - The over is 10-3 in Oklahoma City's last 13 against the NBA Pacific.

              BUZZER BEATERS:

              1. Oklahoma City has won the last three home meetings with the Clippers.

              2. Thunder forward Kevin Durant is averaging 34.0 points in two games against Los Angeles this season to raise his 16-game career clip against the Clippers to 27.8.

              3. Clippers point guard Chris Paul has 15 steals over the past three games.

Pick 'n' roll: Wednesday's best NBA bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oddsmakers have yet to set a line for Wednesday's Timberwolves-Nuggets matchup. Pick should be considered an early lean.

Minnesota Timberwolves at Denver Nuggets (N/A)

The Denver Nuggets continue to live on the edge in the Western Conference, while the Minnesota Timberwolves are rapidly sinking to the bottom.

The Nuggets are the highest-scoring team in the NBA but rank near the bottom in scoring defense, making for an exciting style of play but some inconsistent results.

Denver is the type of team that can lose to the Warriors 112-97 on the road Saturday and come back with a dominating home performance in a 123-84 victory over the same team on Monday.

The big difference was on the inside, where rookie Kenneth Faried bounced back from a one-point, four-rebound performance on Saturday with 27 points and 17 boards on Monday. The Nuggets also got a key piece of their rotation back Monday, with Danilo Gallinari returning from a 10-game absence.

Denver has traded wins and losses over the past five games, winning each time it eclipse the century mark. Denver topped the Timberwolves, 103-101, in overtime at the Pepsi Center on Feb. 20.

With Minnesota spinning out of control with six straight loses and eight straight defeats against the spread, the Nuggets won’t mind kicking them when they’re down.

                Pick: Nuggets

Phoenix Suns at Memphis Grizzlies (-5.5, 194)

The Phoenix Suns and Memphis Grizzlies have been two of the NBA’s hottest teams in the second half.

Memphis is closing in on the No. 4 seed in the West, while Phoenix is still trying to nail down any sort of playoff spot. If the Suns’ bench keeps producing the way it has lately, there’s a good chance we’ll see this team in the playoffs.

Phoenix’s reserves have averaged 40.2 points per game since March 18.

"These last four or five games, I mean, they've carried us," forward Jared Dudley said of the team’s bench. "They've carried the starters, they've done well."

The Suns have won the first two of their meetings with Memphis so far this season and we’ll happily take them getting 5.5 points to play with.

                Pick: Suns
