Tuesday's betting tips: Knicks at home in Windy City

    Weather to watch

Fifteen mph winds will be blowing out to center at Great American Ball Park when the Reds host the Cardinals at 7:10 p.m. ET on Tuesday. Temperatures will be in the high 40s, with a 10 percent chance of rain.

    Who’s hot

NBA: Philly is 15-5 ATS in its last 20 games against losing teams.

NBA: The Knicks are 6-2 ATS in their last eight visits to Chicago, and 5-1 ATS in their last six overall vs. the Bulls.

MLB: The Cardinals are 10-4 in Kyle Lohse’s last 14 starts.

MLB: The under is 5-0 in Justin Masterson’s last five starts vs. the White Sox.

    Who’s not

NBA: The Heat is 4-10 ATS in its last 14 games against winning teams.

NBA: Orlando is 3-8 ATS in its last 11 road games.

MLB: The Blue Jays are 2-5 in Kyle Drabek’s last seven starts vs. the AL East.

MLB: The Nationals are 3-10 in Ross Detwiler’s last 13 road starts.

    Key stat

10 – That’s how many homers Padres right-hander Edinson Volquez has given up in his last nine starts. Volquez did not yield a long ball in his first 2012 start, a 5-3 loss to the Dodgers. But he struggled with control, walking four batters in five innings.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Magic center Dwight Howard (back) did not play Monday against the Pistons and is doubtful for Tuesday’s game against the Wizards. Howard, who’s having pain due to back spasms, is expected to return after five days off for Friday’s game against Atlanta. Howard averages 20.6 points, 14.5 rebounds and 2.1 blocks. His backup, Glen Davis, averaged 18.2 points and 9.4 rebounds in five starts before Monday.

    Games of the day

Boston Celtics at Miami Heat (-7.5, 183.5)

New York Knicks at Chicago Bulls (-9.5, 185.5)

    Notable quotable

"The club and the individuals will be expected to cooperate in any further proceedings and to assist in the development and implementation of programs to instruct players and coaches at all levels on principles of player safety, fair play, and sportsmanship.” – NFL statement in denying the Saints’ appeal in the bounty case. The denial means that head coach Sean Payton's year-long suspension starts April 16.

    Notes and tips

Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton was scratched from Monday's game against the Phillies due to left knee pain. The 22-year-old outfielder is listed as day-to-day. Austin Kearns started in place of Stanton, who is off to a .235 start with three RBIs in four games.

Bruins winger Nathan Horton is unlikely to return for the playoffs, which start at home for Boston on Thursday against Washington. Horton missed the last 36 games after suffering his second concussion in a seven-month span in January. He has been skating on his own. "If he were to be cleared at some point, he would need at least a couple of weeks to get back," GM Peter Chiarelli said. "He's quite far off right now. I know he's skating, but he's having little bouts here and there of post-concussion symptoms. It's a long shot. I'm not going to rule him out, yet, but it's a long shot." Horton had 17 goals and 15 assists in 46 games.

Lakers start Kobe Bryant (shin) missed his second straight game Monday, and is listed as day-to-day for Wednesday’s showdown with San Antonio. Devin Ebanks replaced Bryant at shooting guard. Bryant is averaging 28.1 points, 5.4 rebounds and 4.6 assists.

The Blues, who open the playoffs Thursday against San Jose, didn’t win the Presidents’ Trophy but they did capture the Jennings Trophy. That goes to the goaltender(s) who played a minimum of 25 games for the team with the fewest goals allowed. Brian Elliott led the NHL in goals-against average (1.56) and save percentage (.940). Partner Jaroslav Halak led St. Louis with 26 wins, posting a 1.97 goals-against average.

      Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Barry Zito got the Giants' first win with a CG 4-hit shutout at Coors Field; surprising, to say the least.

-- Zito threw 41 balls, 73 strikes. Colorado pitchers threw 80 balls, 106 strikes, Very difficult to win that throwing so many balls.

-- Speaking of surprises, the Mets are 4-0.

-- Atlanta made four errors in an 8-3 loss at Houston. 0-4 Braves are off to a horrible start.

-- Yu Darvish gave up four runs in his first big league inning, then settled down and wound up giving up five runs in 5.2 IP. Helps when hitters on your team score 11 runs-- Darvish and Texas beat the Mariners, 11-5.

-- Tommy Milone blanked the Royals for eight innings without striking a batter out; he got only three misses on 38 swings, and threw 93 pitches in his eight innings. Your fielders field better when a pitcher throws strikes.

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

      13) Here is yet another reason why I’m seriously considering not posting info on the NBA after this season; it’s a league that has gone insane.

Lamar Odom is making $8.9M this season, bringing his career earnings (I’m not making this up) to $107,767,658, yet Dallas Mavericks just told him to stay home for the rest of the season, then will pay him another $2.4M this summer to never come back, that’s how useless he’s been for them since coming over from the Lakers.

      12) Effort should never be negotiable; how a guy making $8.9M a year can be sent home (with pay) for being useless is absolutely beyond me.

No wonder some teams seem to prefer foreign players; they haven’t been poisoned by our system of amateur basketball the way American kids have.

      11) By way of review, Odom went to several high schools, including Redemption Christian Academy in Troy, which is just over the river from where I live. They wouldn’t give him a high school diploma, which is saying something, so after basketball season that year, he went to St Thomas More Prep in Connecticut, where he miraculously got his high school diploma, and then shuffled off to Rhode Island, where he led Jim Harrick’s Rams to the NCAA tournament in his only year at URI.

Then he was off to pro ball, where he found his niche as a supporting player on the Lakers and married a reality TV attention junkie. What a country, right?

      10) But now he’s in his early 30’s and seems disinterested in playing for anyone other than the Lakers. Hopefully he’s saved a good chunk of his money, or at least hid it from the Kardashian Klan. I’m telling you, you couldn’t make this stuff up, you’d get laughed at.

      9) Another sign we have too much media: SI.com had an article Monday speculating on who will take Peyton Manning’s place as starting QB of the Broncos. Seriously. Nothing like getting ahead of yourself.

      8) One of the cool things about sports is that stars come from all walks of life, from all over the country. Bubba Watson was once a golfer at Faulkner State CC, wherever that is. Now he’s on top of the golf world. Who knew?

      7) Astros drew only 14,195 for their Easter game with Colorado, smallest home crowd they’ve had since moving to Minute Maid Park.

      6) Neither Saints or Raiders have a pick in first two rounds of this year’s NFL Draft. Of course, the Saints also have a GM/coach who will be suspended, and some players too, so this could be a lost year for them.

      5) Eagles just signed a free agent lineman from Northwestern State in Louisiana named Demetress Bell; his father is Karl Malone.

      4) I’m enjoying playing Words with Friends on my IPhone. Addictive it is, though. Damn phone goes off at 3am and I reach for it to play some more letters. Key is to get those triple word scores.

      3) Can’t stand the McDonald’s commercial where the guy curries favor with his boss by losing to him on purpose while playing cards; would you want a weasel like that working for you?

I’d want a guy who was honest and competitive, someone you can trust for a solid effort, even if he did beat my butt playing cards.

      2) OK, so the TCU basketball coach just jumped ship to go back to the MAC, a step down in class from the Big X. He gets replaced at TCU by a guy who jumped ship at LSU, another guy taking a step down, at least as far as the prominence of the basketball program. Just a weird exchange of coaches, and both voluntary moves. TCU goes into the Big X as a potential doormat. Trent Johnson will have do great work to make them competitive in the Big X, but he had to feel uncomortable enough at LSU to bolt to the Horned Frogs.

      1) I had a shop teacher in high school who scolded kids who talked too much, telling them they had “diarrhea of the mouth, it just never stops running.” Well, hopefully Mr Brunn is an Ozzie Guillen fan these days, because the Marlins’ manager has the same problem, he can’t shut up.

Now he’s in trouble for making a comment about Fidel Castro; I’m not even sure what he said, but I know that’s a very, very sensitive subject in south Florida, and now the Marlins are doing damage control in the community. All this, and the season’s not a week old yet. Guillen is going to have to do a lot of fast talking Tuesday morning, if he wants to save his job.

Hot lines: Tuesday's best MLB bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Rays at Detroit Tigers (-110, 8.5)

The Detroit Tigers were expected to run away with their division. The Tampa Bay Rays figured to get more of a challenge. The Rays have broken away from the pack early in the American League East by opening with a three-game sweep of the New York Yankees. The Tigers did Tampa a solid in their first weekend, battling for a dramatic sweep of the Boston Red Sox.

Detroit’s slugging tandem of Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder proved its worth in the first weekend, combining for five home runs and 11 RBIs, while Alex Avila, Austin Jackson and Jhonny Peralta each got off to hot starts. But Cabrera is batting .263 in 54 career games against Tampa Bay -- his second-lowest mark against an AL opponent.

The Rays, who lost six of seven meetings with the Tigers in 2011, have Carlos Pena and Evan Longoria hitting a combined .545 (12 for 22) and are getting strong contributions from Luke Scott and Jeff Keppinger in a new lineup. Scott, however, left Sunday's game with tightness in his hamstring and could be out a few days.

Rays lefty Matt Moore is the consensus top pitching prospect in baseball and showed his stuff in the postseason, allowing one run and three hits in 10 total innings against the Rangers. A left-hander who works in the upper-90’s, Moore recorded 700 strikeouts in 497 1/3 total minor-league innings.

Tigers starter Rick Porcello is coming off an inconsistent 2011.

                Pick: Rays

Pittsburgh Pirates at Los Angeles Dodgers (-230, 6.5)

Whatever worry cropped up during Matt Kemp’s poor spring was swept away over the weekend, when the MVP runner-up opened the regular season by batting .412 and hitting a pair of home runs to lead the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 3-1 series win over the San Diego Padres. The Pittsburgh Pirates have a similar confidence thanks to a hot start by their star center fielder, Andrew McCutchen, and a series win over perennial contender Philadelphia.

Pirates starter Kevin Correia was an All-Star last season but fell off sharply in the second half, posting a 1-5 record with a 7.68 ERA from July 9 through August 19 before being shut down. The veteran right-hander owns a 5-4 career record with a 4.41 ERA in 25 games -- 11 starts -- against the Dodgers.

Dodgers lefty Clayton Kershaw got the start on opening day but was forced out after three innings due to illness. The 24-year old still managed to strike out three while allowing two hits. Kershaw missed the Pirates last season and has never beaten them, going 0-1 with a 3.60 ERA in four career starts.

Kemp and Andre Ethier have combined for 16 RBIs already.

                Pick: Over

Pick 'n' roll: Tuesday's best NBA bets
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Odds were not available as of Tuesday morning. Picks should be considered early leans.

Sacramento Kings at Dallas Mavericks (NA)

The Mavericks have been sputtering and need a sharp turnaround to ensure they will get a chance to defend their NBA championship. Dallas has lost four of six, while the Kings have dropped four straight and nine of 11.

Forward Lamar Odom’s brief stay in Dallas is over after the organization’s patience ended. Odom has been a nonfactor all season long after being acquired from the Los Angeles Lakers. He never found his groove and has been bothered by personal issues while averaging a career-low 6.6 points. “We’ve got to be able to look down that bench and count on folks to be consistent,” general manager Donnie Nelson said. “Unfortunately with him in his state right now, he’s just not capable of doing that.” Odom was the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year last season.

Sacramento’s mid-January visit to Dallas resulted in one of the poorest efforts in franchise history. The Kings scored just 60 points – fewest ever allowed by the Mavericks – and shot just 25.6 percent from the field. Sacramento set a dubious mark for points scored in a half as it trailed 52-23 at intermission. The Kings rebounded to defeat Dallas at home in March to end a 10-game losing skid to the Mavericks.

Sacramento hopes to get leading scorer Marcus Thornton back on Tuesday. Thornton, who averages 18.7 points, has missed the four-game skid with a calf injury.

The home team is 5-0 ATS in the last five meetings.

                          Pick: Mavericks

Orlando Magic at Washington Wizards (N/A)

Washington received 67 points from its bench as the Wizards destroyed the lowly Charlotte Bobcats on Monday in a matchup of the NBA's worst teams.

Orlando has won two straight after dropping five in a row. Center Dwight Howard sat out Monday because of back spasms and is questionable Tuesday.

Washington guard John Wall managed only two points, but dished out 12 assists in the romp. In his previous 23 games since the All-Star break, Wall averaged 17.0 points and 7.8 assists.

The Magic are 61-30 all-time against Washington and Orlando have scored at least 100 points in their last nine contests versus the Wizards.

                          Pick: Over
