Saturday’s betting tips: Mets' knuckler worried about weather

    Weather to watch

Minnesota Twins at Baltimore Orioles: Early forecasts predict up to 20 mph winds blowing in from left-centerfield.

    Who’s hot

NBA: Boston is 5-0-2 against the spread in its last seven overall.

NBA: The over is 17-7 in Minnesota’s last 24 road games.

NHL: Vancouver has won seven of its last eight.

NHL: New Jersey has won five straight.

MLB: Toronto is 10-4 in Brandon Morrow’s last 14 starts.

    Who’s not

NBA: Orlando has dropped five straight against the spread.

NBA: Sacramento is 2-7 against the spread in its last nine.

NHL: Dallas has lost four in a row.

NHL: The New York Islanders are 1-5 in their last six trips to Columbus.

MLB: The over is 2-10-1 in the Chicago Cubs’ last 13.

    Key stat

2.50 – Colorado Rockies starter Jamie Moyer was 2-1 with a sparkling 2.50 ERA in Cactus League play. The 49-year-old was 9-9 with the Phillies last season after coming back from elbow surgery and also tossed a pair of complete games. Moyer and the Rockies opened as -120 favorites at Houston.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Kyle Farnsworth, Tampa Bay Rays - Farnsworth is looking at an extended stay on the 15-day disabled list. Rays manager Joe Maddon said Friday that Farnsworth will likely need four to six weeks of rest for his ailing elbow to heal. Farnsworth, who will turn 36 on April 14, had 25 saves and went 5-1 with a 2.18 ERA as Tampa Bay's closer last year. The Rays are expected to use a closer-by-committee system until Farnsworth returns.

    Game of the day

Dallas Mavericks at Memphis Grizzlies (-3.5, 183

    Notable quotable

"It can sometimes be a problem. When it's too cold, the balls feel different in your hands," Dickey said prior to the season opener. "It's like feeling a pool ball, almost. It's hard to make it do what you want it to do." - New York Mets starter R.A. Dickey about throwing his knuckleball in cool April conditions. The Mets are set as -105 favorites against Atlanta with Dickey starting Saturday. A high of 54 degrees is expected in New York with 16 mph winds blowing in from right field.

    Notes and tips

The Baltimore Orioles have named righthander Jim Johnson as their closer. Johnson will take the place of Kevin Gregg, who served as the closer last year. The 28-year-old Johnson was 6-5 with a 2.67 ERA and nine saves in 14 opportunities last season. Gregg will serve as the setup man or in a variety of roles, Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. In 2011, Gregg was 0-3 with a 4.37 ERA and seven blown saves in 29 chances.

Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews has been ruled for the season finale against the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday. Toews has missed the last 21 games because of a concussion. "I'm still keeping that confidence and that positive outlook that things are going to go the right way," Toews said after practice Friday, "that I will be ready for next week." The Blackhawks have gone 12-5-4 in Toews' absensce.

Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard signed a waiver not to opt out of his contract only after the team threatened to deal him to the Los Angeles Lakers. The New York Post, citing league sources, reported that the Magic had a deal in place with the New Jersey Nets one day before the trade deadline. Howard had waffled back and forth on whether to sign the opt-out waiver and would have become an unrestricted free agent had he failed to do so. According to the newspaper, the Magic told Howard he would be traded to the Lakers "by the end of the day" if he balked at signing the waiver.

Washington Capitals goaltender Michal Neuvirth is scheduled for a doctor's appointment after he was hurt in Thursday night's win over the Florida Panthers. Neuvirth suffered a lower-body injury when his left leg bent, leaving Braden Holtby as the only healthy netminder for Saturday's regular-season finale against the New York Rangers. Tomas Vokoun, who is dealing with a groin injury, is listed as day-to-day, according to Capitals coach Dale Hunter. The team is waiting to hear the results of Neuvirth's exam before deciding whether to call up another goalie from the minors.

Hockey Night In Canada: NHL betting preview
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Maple Leafs at Montreal Canadiens (-120, 5.5)

Quick, take a picture. Because neither team is going to look like this ever again. Indeed, there will be changes aplenty on both sides of this rivalry come the summer, as Toronto and Montreal attempt to start over. For now, we have one more chapter in this fierce feud before the offseason overhauls begin.

        Shouldering a skate

One player that's a part of Toronto's long-term plans, as well as one whose absence was glaring as the season fizzled away, is forward Joffrey Lupul. He was on his way to a memorable season (25 goals, 67 points, and 48 penalty minutes) when the winger separated his shoulder on March 6. The Maple Leafs have never recovered.

You can imagine people's encouragement and enthusiasm, when news broke Thursday that Lupul, a 2002 first-round draft pick by Anaheim, was on the ice for the team's morning skate prior to the game versus Tampa Bay. But he won’t play Saturday, so consider it nothing more than a preview of what lies ahead.

        Count on Kaberle

While you won't see Lupul, you will see Canadiens defenseman Tomas Kaberle, a former Maple Leaf, who has also been sorely missed by his team. Kaberle, traded by Carolina to Montreal on Dec. 9 for defenseman Jaroslav Spacek, missed nine games with an upper-body injury, but was in the lineup during a 2-1 loss to Carolina Thursday.

Kaberle hasn’t had a terrible season. A year after winning the Stanley Cup with Boston, he has three goals, 31 points and just 12 minutes in penalties.

The plus-minus rating - at minus-19 headed into Saturday - is a disaster. But keep in mind, he's played for the Canadiens and Hurricanes, two of the worst teams in the league.

        Dion’s delivering

Though not many were around to see it - the city was hooked on the Blue Jays' epic opening-day marathon win over Cleveland at the same time - Dion Phaneuf scored the winner Thursday night in Toronto's home finale. It was a 3-2 win over Tampa Bay and ended a miserable home schedule for the Maple Leafs, who heard it from the crowd toward the end of the season.

Through it all, give credit to Phaneuf, who has persevered and has overcome his label of being a part-time player when he was with Calgary. He has 11 goals, 43 points and is a minus-8 on a bad team. He also has 90 minutes in penalties and hasn’t been afraid to scrap and defend his franchise's honor through one of its worst seasons.

And as the season closes, he's still out there firing. In fact, he has 15 shots in his last seven games, as well as eight blocks in his last four.

        History

Good news to get out of town for Toronto? The road team has won the last four meetings in this great rivalry. And the under has hit in five of the last six installments. The Canadiens have lost five out of six overall.

Edmonton Oilers at Vancouver Canucks (-235, 5.5)

The schedule makers probably thought this would be a matchup soaked in playoff implications, with teams jockeying for position and playing to the final second with their seasons on the line. Well, Vancouver has some seeding issues to battle for, but that’s about it for this nightcap.

Get to them early... or else

Depending on how some of the out-of-town scores shake down before they take the ice Saturday, the Canucks may have a shot at the league's top spot headed into the postseason, and that's certainly something to fight for. But, more importantly, Vancouver just wants to have all of its ducks in a row as the regular season closes.

This team had home-ice advantage for the Stanley Cup final last year and lost at home to the Bruins in Game 7, igniting chaos on Vancouver’s streets. So, maybe it's better if they have to take to the road for some pivotal playoff contests this time around.

Either way, the key in the postseason for this team, especially with the way they've closed the season, is holding a lead after two periods. The Canucks have showed grit and determination on the backline - things that were absent last year - and are 31-1-2 when leading after two periods this season.

        Jordan Rules

Hard to even remember that great start Edmonton had this season. On Nov. 3, the Oilers shut out Los Angeles 3-0 and improved to 7-2 as thoughts of postseason play danced through their heads.

Fast forward six months, and the Oilers are headed nowhere. A 3-2 overtime loss to Anaheim Thursday closed out a disappointing home season for Edmonton, which will finish next to last in the Western Conference only because of the inadequacy of Columbus.

But give credit to forward Jordan Eberle, who just keeps on going through the malaise. He scored for the Oilers Thursday and now has 34 goals, 76 points and is a plus-5 on a bad team. Somehow, though, he hasn't lost his cool. In fact, he has just eight minutes in penalties all season.

        Counting on Chris

It's going to take a strong finish for him to get to 20 goals on the season, but it's been a solid year for Vancouver forward Chris Higgins either way. He has 18 goals, 43 points and just 16 penalty minutes headed into the finale and is playing his best hockey of the season at the right time.

He was scoreless on two shots in the loss to Calgary Thursday, but still has five goals in his last seven games and has been a true workhorse. In fact, against the Flames, Higgins took 24 shifts.

        History

The Canucks have won seven of the last eight meetings between these two in Vancouver, and have also won four of the last five in this series overall. Edmonton, meanwhile, is 0-4-1 over/under in its last five games.

Ice picks: Saturday's best NHL bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Lightning at Winnipeg Jets (-140, 6)

Steven Stamkos has his final chance to become the 20th NHL player to reach 60 goals in a single season when his Tampa Bay Lightning visit the Winnipeg Jets in the season finale for both on Saturday.

Stamkos needs one goal to become only the second player to reach the milestone since the 1995-96 season.

Stamkos recorded nine goals in the last eight games and has a career-high 96 points – 11 behind league-leader Evgeni Malkin of Pittsburgh. He is not the only Lightning player reaching milestones. Martin St. Louis has at least 25 goals in nine consecutive seasons – a franchise record -- after scoring at Toronto Thursday.

Power forward Ryan Malone is three points shy of matching his career high of 51. Dwayne Roloson is expected to get the start in goal in what could be his final NHL game. Roloson is 4-2-1 in his last seven starts and has 226 career victories.

Tampa Bay has just 12 road victories, tied for last in the league and could have trouble in front of a wild Winnipeg crowd.

          Pick: Jets

Carolina Hurricanes at Florida Panthers (-175, 5)

The Florida Panthers’ 10-year playoff is over and if they can earn a single point against Carolina, they will clinch their first Southeast Division title.

"We feel that Saturday night is something for our home fans. We want to go out and repay them,” coach Kevin Dineen told reporters. "We've got a loyal group that have seen a lot of hockey over the last couple years. We want them to walk out of that game Saturday night with a good feeling."

The Panthers are 20-9-2-9 at home this season, but have dropped three straight in front of their loyal supporters. The good news is they picked up a point in each of those losses.

If Florida does pick up a point, it will play New Jersey in the first round, not the New York Rangers. That’s some major motivation for Dineen’s troops, but this price is awfully steep.

          Pick: Under

Best of the best: Capping the NBA MVP odds
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami’s 98-93 win over Oklahoma City Wednesday sent shock waves through the NBA. But the Heat’s hard-fought victory also impacted the NBA MVP odds, which appear to be a two-man race between LeBron James and Kevin Durant.

Here’s a look at the latest MVP futures heading into the final three weeks of the 66-game schedule:

              LeBron James, Miami Heat (-175)

Even with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh (who aren't on this list) on the floor every night, King James rises above every other player. LeBron is third in the league in scoring (26.9 ppg) and stuffs the stat sheet with eight rebounds and 6.5 assists an outing. However, James’ talented teammates may be his undoing in the MVP race.

Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City Thunder (+150)

KD has the Thunder on top of the Western Conference, sitting second in the NBA in scoring (27.6 ppg) and pulling down 8.1 rebounds per night. But, as of this week, Durant may not even be the best player on his team. Russell Westbrook is putting up MVP numbers, averaging more than 28 points over his last seven games.

Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles Lakers (+500)

Is it just me or does it seem ridiculous that Kobe has only one MVP award? We’re talking about perhaps the second-best player in NBA history (face it people, he’s awesome). Bryant’s 28.1 points per game are tops in the league and he’s put the Lakers on his back in this drama-filled season.

Chris Paul, Los Angeles Clippers (+500)

It’s silly to think that Paul and Bryant could have been on the same team. But, thanks to the NBA’s inside job, CP3 has Los Angeles’ other team rising from the dead like an Easter Jesus. He’s averaging more than 19 points and nine assists per game, most of those passes making the nightly highlight reels.

              Derrick Rose, Chicago Bulls (+1,200)

The reigning MVP has been deemed less valuable by the Bulls’ stellar efforts without Rose in the lineup. Chicago is 8-4 (6-5-1 ATS) since the all-star point guard went down with a groin injury. Luol Deng should get some love from the MVP voters, at least in Chitown, for his efforts.

              Kevin Love, Minnesota Timberwolves (+1,200)

He has the numbers for it, but with injuries ruining what could have been in Minnesota, Love has no chance at the MVP honor. The T-Wolves forward does it all for his team, scoring 26.5 points per game and pulling down just under 14 boards a night. I guess that’s how KG felt all those years in Minny.

Tony Parker, San Antonio Spurs (+1,200)

The Spurs are only one game back of Oklahoma City heading into Friday and Parker’s play is a big part of that. He leads San Antonio in points (19.1 ppg) and assists (7.8 apg) but the Spurs have long been tagged as the ultimate team, making an individual honor a long shot.

              Dwight Howard, Orlando Magic (+1,500)

Orlando’s recent skid and Howard’s riff with Stan Van Gundy has all but snuffed out any chance of him winning the MVP award. The Magic’s big man can’t take all the blame, though. He’s been slowed since taking a shot to the back from Dallas’ Brendan Haywood.

Russell Westbrook, Oklahoma City Thunder (+2,500)

Westbrook has been a beast in recent weeks, including a 45-point effort versus Minnesota. However, like Durant, having another MVP candidate on the floor can hurt your chances. And I’m still not sold on Westbrook as a point guard, dishing out just 5.4 assists a night.

Blake Griffin, Los Angeles Clippers (+5,000)

Jeez, what’s with all the hatin’ on Blake recently? I guess I’d be mad at the guy too if he constantly had me starring in his Plays of the Night. Griffin’s no MVP, but he’s probably the most exciting player to watch in the NBA, which has to count for something.

Carmelo Anthony, New York Knicks (+5,000)

Melo’s teammate Jeremy Lin was +2,500 to win the MVP award at the peak of Linsanity, when Anthony was out with a groin injury in February. Here we are in April, and Lin is out for maybe the year and Carmelo is trying to will New York into the playoffs. The Knicks’ lockout-shortened season is the best reality series on TV – you couldn’t make this stuff up.

Pick 'n' roll: Saturday's best NBA bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oddsmakers have yet to set a line for Saturday's Kings-Clippers matchup. Pick should be considered an early lean.

Sacramento Kings at Los Angeles Clippers (N/A)

When the Clippers downed the Kings on Thursday, DeMarcus Cousins and Blake Griffin were close to throwing punches.

After Cousins fouled out, he reportedly challenged Griffin to meet him in the tunnel to settle the score. That didn’t materialize, but it’s clear this one could be a spirited affair.

"He's babied," Cousins told SI.com about Griffin. "He's the poster child of the league. He sells tickets, but he's babied. Bottom line. He gets away with [everything]. He taunts players. Nothing is done. He's babied."

Babied or not, Griffin is averaging 20.7 points 10.9 rebounds and three assists per game this season, while the Clippers have won seven of their last eight, covering six times over that stretch.

Meanwhile, Cousins was fined $25,000 for his tirade about Griffin and the referees. Sacramento has cashed just twice over the last nine games.

                Pick: Clippers

                Orlando Magic at Philadelphia 76ers (-4.5, 180)

This Dwight Howard-Stan Van Gundy fiasco just isn’t going away.

Word is that Van Gundy will be manning the bench for Saturday’s game, but at this point anything could happen.

It’s pretty clear Howard has no interest in playing for Van Gundy after he managed just eight points and eight rebounds in 39 minutes of work during Thursday’s loss to New York.

Still, Howard insists he hasn’t requested Van Gundy be fired, pointing the finger at the media.

"We're capable of getting through anything," Howard told reporters. "Right now, the leader is being attacked from all angles, and it's my job to stay strong for the team and not allow anything to break my spirit or break who I am as a person or a player. And the rest of the guys will follow."

                We’re not buying it.

                Pick: 76ers

Hot lines: Saturday's best MLB bets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Red Sox at Detroit Tigers (-105, N/A)

If Austin Jackson can finally trim his strikeout tally this season, Detroit’s offense is going to be potent with Prince Fielder and Miguel Cabrera in the middle of the order.

Jackson, who struck out 181 times last season, made adjustments to shorten his swing in the offseason and came through with three hits Thursday, including a game-winning single in the ninth inning to help Detroit down Boston 3-2.

"I get the strikeout questions a lot, but it doesn't bother me. I understand," Jackson told reporters after the game. "I stayed with the approach as far as just putting the ball in play, and it worked out."

Detroit may not even need much offensive output if Doug Fister can keep his hot streak going since coming over from Seattle at last year’s trade deadline. Fister went 8-1 after joining the Tigers before the postseason and is 5-0 with a 1.23 ERA in six starts at Comerica Park.

Going up against Josh Beckett is never easy, but you have to like the home team value here.

                    Pick: Tigers

Philadelphia Phillies at Pittsburgh Pirates (+155, N/A)

The Pittsburgh Pirates insist that their offense is going to be more productive this season with manager Clint Hurdle drilling the buzzword “finish” into his team after their second-half collapse last year.

It’s going to be tough for them to get out of the gate quickly facing Philadelphia’s pitching staff.

Roy Halladay threw eight innings of two-hit ball in Thursday’s season opener while striking out five Pirates in a 1-0 win and Philadelphia sends Cliff Lee to the hill for Game 2 of the series.

"Well, I know he's Cliff Lee. But he's still a pitcher,” Pittsburgh’s Andrew McCutchen told reporters. “To me, you've got to get in there like he's any other pitcher, show up and do your job."

If you’re up to laying the chalk, Philadelphia is an easy play. Otherwise, stick with the under.

                    Pick: Under

                        Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- The A's cannot use this Donaldson guy at 3B; he's horrendous on bunt plays. A former catcher, he can hit, but he's a butcher at third base.

-- Yoenis Cespedes already has a reputation for a strong throwing arm, as Seattle baserunners held up trying to advance on balls hit to him.

-- Tennessee State's John Cooper, who handed Murray State its only loss in the regular season, is the new head coach at Miami, Ohio.

-- Eastern Illinois hired Jay Spoonhour, whose dad Charlie passed away earlier this year. Charlie Spoonhour was a great coach at Missouri State, Saint Louis and UNLV.

-- Florida International fired the inept Isiah Thomas; hopefully they'll go hire a guy who can coach, not just someone who is famous.

-- Why does Augusta National still use fax machines?

                        *****************

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Random thoughts with weekend here......

                        13) The best trade in New York Knicks’ history was December 19, 1968; they sent Walt Bellamy/Howard Komives to the Detroit Pistons for Dave DeBusschere, a gritty power forward (6-6, he’d be a 3-man today) who was the final piece in the only Knick nucleus to ever win an NBA title, winning in ’70 and ’73. DeBusschere is deceased now, but was such a god in New York he wound up being commissioner of the ABA after he retired.

                        12) Why do I bring this up? When DeBusschere was a Piston (he was born/raised in Detroit, went to U of Detroit, was Pistons’ 1st round pick in 1962), at age 24, he was named player/coach of the Pistons, a failed experiment (he went 79-143 over three seasons). The way current star players are shredding coaches, or just refusing to try hard, why bother having a coach? Just let the star player coach the team.

                        11) Bill Russell was player-coach for the last three years of his career, going 162-83 and winning two titles in three years (the three years before the Knicks won their first title), but those were great teams he played on and coached.

                        10) My point is this; if Dwight Howard hates Stan Van Gundy as a coach so much, let him coach the damn team. Let a couple assistants do the grunt work scouting, have a couple other assistants work on skill development with players in practice but on game night, Howard is the man, the face of the franchise. Lets see how easy he thinks it is then.

                        9) On the other hand, while Howard is acting like an immature jerk, almost seemed like Van Gundy was trying to get himself fired, knowing the team is dead as it stands now and would never win. Quitting isn’t an option because of the money involved, so he’d probably be relieved to get relieved of his duties.

                        8) Elias Sports Bureau pointed out that an average of 4.7 runs/game scored Thursday, the lowest scoring day in the big leagues on a day with 7+ games since 1983.

                        7) CAA, the league with George Mason/VCU, has signed on to have games shown on NBC Sports Network (the old Versus channel), so they're out of the loop for Bracket Busters, which is an ESPN/ABC production.

                        6) TCU pulled a coup if they really have signed LSU's Trent Johnson as its new coach, as they head into the Big X. Johnson won big at Nevada and did well at Stanford, but struggled at LSU. No way Horned Frogs were going to do any better than Johnson; this is a home run for them.

                        5) Last year, Cincinnati Bengals' defense was on field for 1,066 plays; they cut a safety this week named Chris Crocker, who was on the field for 1,019 out of 1,066 plays and was a captain. Bengals are way under the salary cap, so why did they cut a guy who is obviously one of their better players?

                        4) Heading into Friday's games, 37 of the Lakers' 54 games (74.5%) were within 6 points either way in the last 5:00, highest %age in the league.

                        3) For years, Rams-Titans played an exhibition game against each other and practiced together for a few days before the game, but now that Rams have former Titan mentor Jeff Fisher running the show, no more. Wonder why.

                        2) You wonder why some of these college coaches change jobs; often its due to a bad relationship with the AD, especially if a new AD comes in, a guy who didn't hire the coach (see K-State/Frank Martin).

Friend of mine was a coach in a place where the two ADs had backgrounds in swimming and judo; they were clueless about team sports and therefore made people miserable in the athletic department. People work better when they're respected and they're happy. ADs who were football/hoop coaches are generally better to work for, because they have an understanding of what a coach goes through.

                        1) Last thought on Dwight Howard: with the money Orlando pays him, he should play his ass off every night, no matter who the coach is, even if the team was coached by Moe, Larry and Curly. Howard has a part in the new Three Stooges movie. He actually tried playing against them.
