Tuesday's betting tips: Spurs dominating Eastern foes

    Who’s hot

NBA: The Spurs are 6-0 ATS in their last six games vs. Eastern Conference foes.

NBA: Golden State is 7-1 ATS in its last eight road games.

NHL: The home team is 7-0 in the last seven Toronto-Buffalo games.

NHL: Dallas is 11-2 in its last 13 games following a loss by three or more goals.

    Who’s not

NBA: The Heat is 3-8 ATS in its last 11 games against winning teams.

NBA: The over is 2-8 in the last 10 Suns-Kings games.

NHL: The Bruins are 5-14 in their last 19 games following a win.

NHL: Florida is 1-6 in its last seven games.

    Key stat

2.08 – That was the ERA Tampa Bay Rays starter James Shields posted this spring. Shields, who finished the spring 3-0 after tossing 60 pitches on Sunday, will toe the mound Friday when the Rays open the season against CC Sabathia and the Yankees. In 21 2/3 spring innings, Shields struck out 23 while walking five. He did, however, allow four home runs.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Magic center Dwight Howard (back) made the trip to Detroit for Tuesday’s game against the Pistons, an indication he intends to play. Look for another update following Orlando’s Tuesday morning shootaround. Howard averages 20.9 points, 14.5 rebounds and 2.1 blocks.

    Games of the day

New York Rangers at Philadelphia Flyers (-130, 5)

Philadelphia 76ers at Miami Heat (NA)

    Notable quotable

"Physically I'm fine, I feel great, no aches and pains… The whole idea is to get your game together and have it going the way you want at the time you want. There are four times a year (the four majors) you want to be playing your best, and this is one of them." – Tiger Woods, who is favored at a major for the first time since the 2010 Masters.

    Notes and tips

Undefeated Baylor is a 7-point favorite over Notre Dame in the women’s NCAA championship game on Tuesday. The Bears, led by 6-8 Brittney Griner, defeated the Irish 94-81 in the Preseason WNIT title game Nov. 20 in Waco, Texas. It was the fourth game of the season for both teams, who at the time were ranked Nos. 1 and 2. Baylor is trying to become the first NCAA team to go 40-0.

The defending World Series champion Cardinals have placed veteran right-hander Chris Carpenter on the DL retroactive to March 26, due to nerve irritation in his throwing shoulder. The Cards hope Carpenter will return in May. In the meantime, Lance Lynn will take his spot in the rotation.

Capitals goalie Tomas Vokoun, who suffered a groin strain last Thursday against the Bruins, could be done for the season. Vokoun is 25-17 with a 2.51 goals-against average and .917 save percentage. Now the Caps will rely on goalies Michal Neuvirth 24, and Braden Holtby, 22. Washington concludes the regular season by hosting Florida on Thursday and visiting the Rangers on Saturday.

Red Sox closer Andrew Bailey might start the season on the DL with a right thumb injury. Bailey, who was examined in Boston on Monday, hasn’t appeared in a Grapefruit League game since March 25. Alfredo Aceves and Mark Melancon could replace Bailey as closer on a short-term basis. Pitching coach Bob McClure also did not rule out Vicente Padilla.

      Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

For what its worth, stat leaders from spring training......

BA: Kawasaki, Sea .450, Dirks, Det .423, MYoung, Tex .423

Runs: Cain, KC 19, Hosmer KC 18-- Big spring for the Royals.

RBI: Hosmer KC 29, DYoung Det 21, Hughes Min, 20

Stolen Bases: Blanco SF 12, Gordon LA 11

ERA: Beckett Bos 0.95, Leblanc Mia 1.30, CWilson LAA 1.33

Strikeouts: Liriano Minn 33, Greinke Mil 31, Halladay Phil 27.

      ****************

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

      13) What does it say about the Basketball Hall of Fame the Nike CEO Phil Knight is in, but Rick Pitino/Jerry Tarkanian aren’t? How does this make sense? What has Knight done for basketball, except make a fortune off it?

      12) Jimmy Buffett played a concert in New Orleans Sunday night, wearing a “FREE SEAN PAYTON” t-shirt; he brought Payton on stage to play the bongos for a while. Going to be interesting to see if the NFL shortens Payton’s suspension.

      11) Was weird watching Kentucky-Kansas tonight and thinking that freakin’ Butler played for the last two national titles. An amazing feat.

      10) Odd stat of the day: New York Rangers haven’t had home ice edge in a playoff series since 1996. They’ll have home ice throughout the Eastern Conference playoffs this spring.

      9) Arkansas football coach Bobby Petrino was injured in a motorcycle accident this weekend, but a full recovery is expected. We certainly hope so.

      8) Long time ago, there used to be an actor named James Stacy; was on a show called Lancer in the 60’s. Stacy lost an arm and a leg in a motorcycle accident. Will never forget him going on the Tonight Show after the accident; I was a kid, and it made a lasting impression seeing him like that, so much so that I never wanted to ride a minibike or motorcycle, anything like that. Coach Petrino is lucky he only broke some ribs.

      7) Hopefully some journalist will get to the bottom of how Kansas State found out about the $200 the Samuels kid got wired to him by his old AAU coach, which caused the school to suspend him for the Syracuse game. Hard to believe it was some random customner finding a receipt and bringing it to the K-State gym. Things don’t work that way. Politics are a funny thing; the AD at Kansas State might want that information kept quiet.

      6) I’m told that the TV show Mad Men took a cheap shot at Mitt Romney in Sunday’s show, using fact that Romney’s dad was governor of Michigan in the 60’s, and insulting the father in the show without using his first name, delivering the ol’ subliminal message. Not much class there.

      5) Ohio U hired former TCU coach Jim Christian, who is smart enough to know that the Horned Frog job is a sinking ship with TCU joining the Big X, for football reasons only. Christian did good work getting TCU to the middle of the Mountain West pack, but getting them to be competitive in the Big X might be an impossible job, giving the difference in resources.

      4) The store in Illinois that sold a winning lottery ticket this weekend gets a $500,000 bonus; the store in Kansas only gets $10,000; individual states set those bonuses, so I’m told.

      3) Heard Rick Monday broadcasting a Dodger game Sunday night from Arizona; tremendous voice, very fair, not afraid to criticize either team. Can’t believe I’ve never heard him before; he was one of my boyhood idols, when he played for the A’s. Guess he does radio for the Dodgers.

      2) One of reasons the A’s won three straight World Series was tremendous starting pitching; after the ’71 season, Oakland traded centerfielder Monday straight up for a lefty starter named Ken Holtzman. Holtzman was terrific for the A’s and a huge reason they were so successful. The trade is one of many reasons Charles O Finley belongs in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

      1) Read some prominent NFL writer say this weekend that Bill Parcells was an overrated coach, that anyone could’ve won Super Bowls with Lawrence Taylor on his team. Bull.

Taylor was a handful to coach, moreso off the field than on; Parcells was masterful coaching him, keeping him on the field and he is a deserving Hall of Famer. I’m not a fan of any team he has coached, but if you say he’s not a Hall of Famer, then you just don’t like him, and that’s not right. Its not a damn personality contest.

Ice picks: Tuesday's best NHL bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Winnipeg Jets at Florida Panthers (-155, 5)

Thanks to a critical point earned in a shootout loss to Detroit on Sunday, Florida can clinch a playoff berth by beating visiting Winnipeg.

But the Panthers aren’t exactly clicking offensively. They have mustered 14 regulation goals in their past nine games and went 0 for 6 on the power play against the Red Wings. Tomas Fleischmann has four goals in the last seven games, but no one else is producing.

Winnipeg, meanwhile, has nothing to play for. The Jets were eliminated from playoff contention with their 4-3 overtime loss at Tampa Bay on Saturday night.

The under is 5-0-4 in the Panthers’ last nine games, and 14-4 in the last 18 Jets-Panthers meetings in Florida.

                Pick: Under

San Jose Sharks at Dallas Stars (-105, 5)

Dallas is desperate for revenge after falling 3-0 at HP Pavilion to San Jose on Saturday – a loss that dropped the Stars to ninth in the Western Conference.

Dallas can leapfrog San Jose with a win Tuesday, and is glad to see the Sharks again so soon. The Stars are trying to make the playoffs for the first time in four years.

"They got the jump and set us back a little bit right away," Dallas coach Glen Gulutzan said of Saturday’s loss. "We have a big game with these guys on Tuesday and our fate is in our hands. It's got to be the mindset of do or die."

The Stars should get a boost from the return of physical winger Eric Nystrom, who missed the last three games with a leg laceration caused by a skate blade.

San Jose has lost its last five road games against teams with winning home marks. And the home team is 4-0 in the last four Sharks-Stars clashes.

                Pick: Stars

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Knicks at Indiana Pacers (-5.5, 190)

So far, no Jeremy Lin has been no problem for the New York Knicks. Lin, who is done for the regular season due to a torn meniscus, has missed the last four games. The Knicks have won three times in that stretch as Carmelo Anthony has stepped up for both Lin and Amare Stoudemire.

The Pacers are sitting in the fifth spot in the East but have struggled against New York. Indiana suffered losses to the Knicks on March 16 and 17 by an average of 14.5 points, with Danny Granger shooting 9 of 30 in those contests.

Under interim coach Mike Woodson, New York is putting extra emphasis on defense. The Knicks have allowed an average of 80.3 points in their last three victories.

Carmelo Anthony is averaging 24.9 points in 21 career games against the Pacers. And the Knicks are 5-1 ATS in their last six visits to Indianapolis.

                          Pick: Knicks

Charlotte Bobcats at Toronto Raptors (-9.5, 187.5)

Charlotte looks to beat the Raptors for the third time this season and the seventh consecutive time overall when the teams play in Toronto on Tuesday. However, the Bobcats have lost seven consecutive games since recording a 107-103 home win over the Raptors on March 17.

Bobcats coach Paul Silas says he will play give more playing time to young players over the final 16 games of the season. “We still want to win games, but the fact is we have to find out what these kids are about,” Silas said. “If we were going for a playoff berth or something like that then absolutely we would want our veteran players in there. But we’re not, so we want these guys to play and see how they react.”

Toronto, which defeated the Washington Wizards on Sunday, hasn’t won back-to-back games since Jan. 24-25. But it's not Jose Calderon's fault. He's averaging 8.8 assists and for the season has posted 421 assists against just 98 turnovers. A hot finish could allow Calderon to average over nine assists for the first time in his seven-year career.

Charlotte is 2-5 ATS in its last seven games, and 8-21 ATS in its last 29 games as an underdog of 5.0-10.5 points.

                          Pick: Raptors

Game of the day: Penguins at Bruins
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Penguins at Boston Bruins (-128, 5.5)

                            THE STORY:
With the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference all sewn up, the Boston Bruins will try to build as much momentum as possible over the season’s final few games. The Bruins, 7-1-1 in their past nine, will look to avoid dropping a fifth straight at home against Pittsburgh when the Penguins visit Tuesday. Pittsburgh has sputtered down the stretch, dropping four of six, and is trying to hold off Philadelphia for fourth in the East and home ice in the first round.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network, ROOT Sports (Penguins), NESN (Bruins)

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (48-25-6): While their recent struggles have dashed any hopes of competing for the East’s top seed, Pittsburgh still has a lot to play for. The Penguins, who lost 6-4 to Philadelphia on Sunday, are one point ahead of the Flyers in the race for home ice in an anticipated first-round playoff series between the teams. Netminder Marc-Andre Fleury has excelled when facing the Bruins, posting a 6-2-0 record and 1.75 goals against average in his past eight starts.

ABOUT THE BRUINS (47-28-4): Now that Boston secured a fifth consecutive playoff appearance under Claude Julien, the veteran coach said he is happy how his team is coming together. "If you look at the way we played for two months prior to these last couple of weeks, it's a big improvement,” he said. “And I think our guys are really doing a good job gearing up for the playoffs." Tim Thomas is only 2-3-2 with a 3.22 GAA in his last seven starts against Pittsburgh.

                            TRENDS:

                            * Under is 6-0-1 in the last seven meetings in Boston.

                            * Penguins are 4-1 in the last five meetings.
                            * Road team is 7-1 in the last eight meetings.

                            OVERTIME:

                            1. Penguins forward Pascal Dupuis is riding a 14-game points streak, the longest mark in the NHL this season.

                            2. Bruins center David Krejci owns six points (three goals, three assists) his last four games.

PREDICTION: Penguins 3, Bruins 2 (OT)
