Wednesday’s betting tips: Clips cruising after owner speaks out

    Who’s hot

NBA: Boston has covered in five straight home games.

NBA: New York is 14-3 against the spread in its last 17 home games.

NHL: Colorado has lost its last five games in Vancouver.

NHL: Anaheim is 5-1 in its last six meetings with San Jose.

NCAAB: Washington State has covered the number in four straight.

    Who’s not

NBA: New Jersey is 1-6 against the spread in its last seven overall.

NBA: The under is 0-5 in Denver’s last five games.

NHL: Los Angeles is 3-14-1 in its last 18 games in Calgary.

NHL: Edmonton is 3-9 in its last 12 home games.

NCAAB: The under is 0-5 in Utah State’s last five games.

    Key stat

1.67 – Felix Hernandez makes his fifth Opening Day start for the Seattle Mariners Wednesday in Tokyo. In his first four Opening Day starts he is 3-0 with a 1.67 ERA and 27 strikeouts. The Mariners are set as -130 favorites against the Oakland Athletics. Oddsmakers have the total pegged at 7.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Brandon McCarthy, Oakland Athletics – McCarthy tore the fingernail of his middle finger on his throwing hand in his last start of the preseason last Tuesday when he gave up four runs in four innings against the Blue Jays. He had a fake nail put on at a nail salon but that fell off on Sunday and there hasn’t been any word on his condition outside of the fact that he’s expected to make his first Opening Day start Wednesday against the Mariners. He was 9-9 with a 3.32 ERA last season and had 125 strikeouts compared to only 25 walks last season.

    Game of the day

Chicago Bulls at Atlanta Hawks (4, 183)

    Notable quotable

"It didn't need to be done but it is appreciated. It's a difficult situation. People start talking even though it's not the reality of the situation; it becomes a headache. We're trying to build something special here and do it the right way and when you lose games, you're going to be questioned on things. That's just part of it." – Los Angeles Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro after the team’s ownership gave him a vote of confidence this week, supposedly ending speculation that Del Negro’s job was in danger during a three-game losing streak. The Clips have rebounded to win consecutive contests, covering the number in both as they head into Wednesday’s date with Phoenix as 6-point favorites.

    Notes and tips

New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony tweaked his groin in the third quarter of Monday night's 89-80 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks. "I don't think it's too bad; I just want to take it day by day," Anthony said. The 27-year-old missed seven games with a right groin strain last month. He noted that Monday's injury was less severe than his previous groin ailment. Anthony is averaging 20.2 points and six rebounds in 40 games this season.

After batting leadoff throughout his career, Ichiro Suzuki will hit third in the Seattle Mariners’ lineup to begin the regular season in an effort to drive in runs. If preseason stats are any indication, it doesn’t look like the switch will bother him much. He hit an even .400 in exhibition play.

Edmonton Oilers star left wing Taylor Hall will undergo surgery on his left shoulder and miss the remainder of the season. Hall will be sidelined five to six months after the surgery, Oilers general manager Steve Tambellini said. Hall, 20, has collected 27 goals and 26 assists in 61 games this season.

      Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Six ballplayers who came to bat last season with the most runners on base
      6) Miguel Cabrera, 460—Will the switch to third base hurt his hitting?

      5) Ryan Howard, 462—Hopes to be back from Achilles tendon surgery by Memorial Day.

      4) Jay Bruce, 463—Came to bat 83 times LY with a man on third; only knocked him in 25 times.

      3) Matt Kemp, 471—Will be playing for new owner by season’s end.

      2) Prince Fielder, 473—He’ll miss Miller Park; the Brewers will miss him.

      1) Adrian Gonzalez, 486—Why did the Commissioner let Padres trade him?

      *****************

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: In a perfect world, where I make decisions

      13) Baseball season would never, ever start in Japan. Ever. If teams have to go over there, they play exhibition games. Period.

      12) I-A college football teams wouldn’t play I-AA teams and if they did, tickets prices would have to be reduced by at least half of what they are for a I-A opponent.

      11) The Presidential election would be determined by popular vote, not the outdated electoral college. With the electoral college, only votes in certain swing states have a real impact on the election.

      10) It would be OK to make noise during a golf swing. Put it this way; on a baseball field, Albert Pujols tries to hit a 95 mph fastball with 35,000 fans yelling, when the pitch might just as easily be a 72 mph change-up; the golf ball is sitting still. Just hit it already.

      9) All states would have a shot clock for high school basketball; we have it here in New York—just makes the game so much more fun to play and watch. Most states don’t have it.

      8) Fighting would be banned from the NHL, just like all the other sports. Hockey is a great game; you don’t need it.

      7) Wouldn’t turn the clocks back in the fall, just leave them the way they are now. Its cruddy when it gets dark at 4:30 in December.

      6) NBA playoff series would be best-of-5, at most, instead of best-of-7.

      5) Online poker would be legal again; its legal everywhere else in the world. I know guys who spend a lot of their year in Malta so they can play cards for a living; they’re Americans. They should be able to do that here.

      4) NFL teams shouldn’t call a press conference after trading for a backup quarterback. Unless, of course, they’re just starved for attention. That usually leads to trouble.

      3) Our taxes pay the salaries of state troopers; the first time you get pulled over for speeding, you should get a warning card saying to slow down. No one should get a ticket the first time they’re pulled over, and no, I haven’t gotten any tickets recently.

      2) Sports teams shouldn’t be allowed to price tickets on tiers, according to the opponent/event. If a team charges more because the Angels are in town, but Pujols doesn’t play that day, you don’t get a discount, do you? Why should Opening Day tickets cost more than tickets later that week? Why do teams blatantly rip off their own fans?

      1) Kids should be able to go straight from high school to the NBA; the pro league should be in kids’ ears, telling them where they’re likely to be drafted, if at all, then kids can make better decisions. Its ridiculous for a kid to go to college for only one year, and then bolt for the league. I’m surprised that wasn’t addressed with the new NBA labor agreement.

MLB primer: AL East odds to win and preview

For all the name power in the American League East, and the hype and buzz that goes with it, this division just doesn't produce champions like it used to, does it? The AL East has only one World Series title in the last four years: the 2009 Yankees.

Will normalcy be restored this season? To be determined. There certainly is high-priced talent all over the place. But maybe just enough questions on the money teams -- the Yankees, Red Sox and Rays -- to keep this division down when it counts.

Until then, let's examine all five teams, and their strengths and weaknesses as we await the first pitch of 2012 (Odds courtesy of PinnacleSports.com):

        New York Yankees

        Last year's record: 97-65
This year's season win total: 93.5
Odds to win the AL East: -136

WHO'S IN: Raul Ibanez, Hiroki Kuroda, Michael Pineda, Andy Pettitte, Bill Hall
WHO'S OUT: Jorge Posada, Jesus Montero, A.J. Burnett

TEAM STRENGTH: Power. What the Yankees lack in team batting average (.263 last season), they can make up for with the long balls. They whacked 222 last season, which led the majors, and though age is catching up to Derek Jeter, 37 years old, and Alex Rodriguez, 36, Curtis Granderson (41 homers last season), Mark Teixeira (39), Robinson Cano (28) and even Nick Swisher (23) should be able to pick up where they left off.

TEAM WEAKNESS: Starting pitching. CC Sabathia aside, there are questions to be answered. And there is no more Burnett to pick on, so Ivan Nova (16-4, 3.70 ERA last year) cannot suffer a slump a year after his breakout, and the unknowns that are Phil Hughes and Pettitte must at the least, deliver quality innings, and hand leads over to an aging but still effective bullpen.

        Tampa Bay Rays

        Last year's record: 91-71
This year's season win total: 86.5
Odds to win the AL East: +500

WHO'S IN: Carlos Pena, Luke Scott
WHO'S OUT: Casey Kotchman, Johnny Damon

TEAM STRENGTH: Starting pitching. James Shields (16-12, 2.82 ERA, 225 strikeouts) and David Price (12-13, 3.49, 218) can certainly produce better numbers than last year, and will lead a staff loaded with upside, including the much heralded Matt Moore, who was 1-0 with just three walks in limited duty last season. He will begin the year in the rotation, and won't have the pressure other youngsters have on other teams because of the horses in front of him.

TEAM WEAKNESS: Strikeouts. Pena and Scott could be a feast-or-famine parlay, as the two combined for 37 homers last season, but also produced a joint 215 punchouts. With health, those power numbers will increase, especially as Pena returns to the American League. But the threat of the strikeout, especially with runners on base for a team that needs to maximize offense, will loom large all season.

        Boston Red Sox

        Last year's record: 90-72
This year's season win total: 90.5
Odds to win the AL East: +300

WHO'S IN: Andrew Bailey, Cody Ross, Nick Punto
WHO'S OUT: Marco Scutaro, Tim Wakefield, Jason Varitek, J.D. Drew

TEAM STRENGTH: Speed. Believe it or not, a team with Jacoby Ellsbury (39 steals), Dustin Pedroia (26) and Carl Crawford (18) last season finished 17th in the league in stolen bases. But the key here, is the latter of the three. Crawford, considering his talent, motivation and health, is due for a big season in Beantown, and if he's getting on base, and swiping them at a regular clip, the Red Sox could be the most dangerous baserunning team out there.

TEAM WEAKNESS: Bullpen. Not as much as a weakness just yet, as much as it's an unknown. New manager Bobby Valentine does not have the services of Jonathan Papelbon, who is now with the Phillies. And though he has options -- Bailey had 24 saves last season -- the mystery that is Josh Bard -- Is he staying in the bullpen? Is he headed to the rotation? Will he stay at either place very long? -- might just hover over this group and do more harm than good.

        Toronto Blue Jays

        Last year's record: 81-81
This year's season win total: 83
Odds to win the AL East: +1325

WHO'S IN: Sergio Santos, Francisco Cordero
        WHO'S OUT: Corey Patterson

TEAM STRENGTH: Bullpen. An area of weakness last season, the relief staff should be a strong spot this year. Sergio Santos, Jason Frasor and Cordero have all closed games before, and done well in the role. Santos and Cordero, in fact, combined for 67 saves last season, and nine victories.

TEAM WEAKNESS: Protection. Jose Bautista is one of the most feared hitters in baseball, but there isn’t another bat in Toronto’s lineup to make an opposing pitcher sweat.

        Baltimore Orioles

        Last year's record: 69-93
This year's season win total: 70.5
Odds to win the AL East: +10,600

WHO'S IN: Wilson Betemit, Jason Hammel, Matt Lindstrom
WHO'S OUT: Jeremy Guthrie, Luke Scott, Derrek Lee

TEAM STRENGTH: You have to like the upside of the outfield. Adam Jones may never be the player he was billed as, but Orioles fans can probably live with the numbers he threw up last year: .280 average, 25 homers, 83 RBIs, 68 runs and 12 steals. Combine him Nick Markakis (73 RBIs and 72 runs), and at least you've got something out there in the grass of Camden Yards.

TEAM WEAKNESS: Starting pitching. Guthrie certainly wasn't Cy Young, but he won 47 games for bad Baltimore teams from 2007-11, and will be sorely missed. The names left for the rotation depth chart -- let's face it -- will not top many fantasy draft boards: Jake Arrieta, Tommy Hunter, Wei-Yin Chen, Tsuyoshi Wada, Zach Britton, Hammel. In this division? Good luck.

Washington State (+2) beat Pitt 67-66 in Pullman Monday night, despite leading scorer Motum missing game (ankle); he wasn't in uniform, so it is doubtful he plays here, especially since this is best-of-3 series- Pitt win forces a decisive game Friday. Coogs won last three true road games, at USC-USF-Oregon State, but this is first time this year they've been east of Rockies. Panthers' defense slipped this year; State shot 51% from the floor Monday; Pitt won its last three home games, by 20-18-21 points.

Utah State scored 83.3 ppg in winning four home games to get to finals in this tournament, but #142 LMU was best of the four team they beat, so #95 Mercer is step up; Aggies are 1-5 this season vs top 100 teams, with win in season opener over BYU the only win. Mercer went north and won last two games on road, at ODU/Fairfield; last three teams they beat are all rated higher than #124 Utah State. Bears are a defensive team; only one of last eight opponents scored more than 61 points.

Ice picks: Wednesday's best NHL bets
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Red Wings at Columbus Blue Jackets (+170, 5.5)

Even though the Detroit Red Wings secured their 21st consecutive playoff berth with a 7-2 blowout of the Columbus Blue Jackets Monday, don’t expect them to let up when the two clubs complete a home-and-home series Wednesday.

The Red Wings thoroughly outplayed the Blue Jackets in every zone and with Henrik Zetterberg leading the charge, tallied a handful of highlight reel goals.

On Wednesday, they’re expecting to have Johan Franzen back in the lineup after he missed four games with back spasms.

“I think it's real important, as you've seen with Pavel (Datsyuk) and Nick (Lidstrom), when you miss time, it doesn't matter how good a player you are, it doesn't come back right away, so it's important he gets in and gets playing,” Detroit coach Mike Babcock told reporters of Franzen’s return.

Franzen leads the team with 26 goals and Detroit might as well be playing an AHL team here. This one could get ugly, too.

            Pick: Over

San Jose Sharks at Anaheim Ducks (+105, 5)

San Jose leads the Pacific by one point over Dallas and Phoenix - who are tied for seventh in the West - and two points over Los Angeles.

“We haven’t done anything yet,’’ captain Joe Thornton said. “We have to keep winning to make the playoffs.’’

After Wednesday, the Sharks have five games remaining – at Phoenix and home-and-home sets with Dallas and Los Angeles. So, it isn’t going to be easy.

Anaheim is on the verge of being eliminated from playoff contention, but the club isn’t going to back down against the Sharks.

Goaltender Jonas Hiller is expected to add to his franchise record when he makes his 70th start of the season. Hiller has owned the Sharks recently with a 5-1-0 mark and a 1.92 goals against average

            Pick: Under

Pick 'n' roll: Wednesday's best NBA bets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Indiana Pacers at New Jersey Nets (5.5, 193.5)

The Pacers have won four of their last five games outright and are coming off what could have been the club’s biggest win of the season.

Indiana downed a sluggish Miami Heat team 105-90 as a 3.5-point underdog Monday night. Danny Granger and Darren Collison combined for 45 points as the club moved into fifth place in the Eastern Conference.

"Our guys had a determination that they weren't going to be denied," coach Frank Vogel told reporters. "We're competing at a high level. We're looking forward to making a serious run at the end of the season and be one of the hottest teams going into the playoffs."

Indiana has won all three meetings between these two teams this season and even though the Nets managed to cover the last two of those, they could be in trouble Wednesday.

New Jersey is just 1-6 straight up and against the spread in its last seven after an ugly 105-84 loss to Utah as a 1.5-point favorite.

                    Pick: Pacers

Utah Jazz at Boston Celtics (-4, 190.5)

Even though the Boston Celtics have themselves back in the playoff picture, coach Doc Rivers knows there is a lot of work to be done with his club.

The Celtics beat up on the Bobcats Monday for their fourth win in five games and even though they covered as 6.5-point favorites, Rivers wasn’t pleased about being up by only two after leading 33-15 in the first quarter.

“If we’re a quote-unquote defensive team then we have to be better than that,” Rivers told reporters. “For us, we have to keep plugging along and keep playing. It is important, but we’ve still got some games left. Since the All-Star break we haven’t played well every night but we’re winning some of the games where we don’t play well.”

And despite Boston’s defensive focus, the Celtics and Jazz normally top their posted totals. Utah has scored at least 100 points in four straight and each of the last four meetings between these two teams have played over.

                    Pick: Over
