Wednesday's betting tips: NIT bettors backing Cardinal

    Who’s hot

NBA: Atlanta has covered in its last eight meetings with Cleveland.

NBA: Detroit is 16-6 against the spread in its last 22 games overall.

NHL: Buffalo has won five of its last six.

NHL: St. Louis has won seven of its last 10 road games.

NCAAB: Nevada is 11-2 against the spread in its last 13 road games.

NCAAB: Minnesota has covered in each of its last six games.

    Who’s not

NBA: New Orleans is 7-20 against the spread in its last 27 home games.

NBA: The over is 1-6 in the last seven meetings between Washington and New Jersey.

NHL: Montreal is 4-10 in its last 14.

NHL: Detroit has lost five games in a row.

NCAAB: Middle Tennessee State is 2-5 against the spread in its last seven home games.

NCAAB: The under is 0-5 in Stanford’s last five overall.

    Key stat

30.3 – Minnesota Timberwolves forward Kevin Love leads the NBA in scoring during the month of March, putting up 30.3 points per contest. He’s also averaging 13.5 rebounds and 2.9 3-pointers through 10 games this month, though the Timberwolves are just 5-5 both straight up and against the spread heading into Wednesday’s date with San Antonio.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Jimmy Howard, Detroit Red Wings - Howard has re-injured his groin and is considered day-to-day. Howard returned from a groin injury a couple weeks ago and has reportedly suffered a relapse. The netminder allowed four goals on 21 shots in the Red Wings' 5-3 loss to the Washington Capitals on Monday night and has just one win in his last eight starts. Detroit has recalled goalie Ty Conklin on an emergency basis from Grand Rapids of the AHL. Conklin must clear re-entry waivers in order to join the team for Wednesday's contest against the New York Rangers. Howard has a 33-15 record with a 2.15 GAA and .920 save percentage in 52 games this season.

    Game of the day

Los Angeles Lakers at Dallas Mavericks (-4.5, 188)

    Notable quotable

"It definitely showed our fans' passion. It's frustrating for the players as well as the fans right now. We made a trade, which is, in my opinion, the reason why there was the reaction. We made a trade that's not going to help us this year. It's going to help us next year, when Andrew Bogut gets back." – Golden State Warriors forward David Lee after the team’s owner was booed relentlessly by the hometown crowd Monday for trading away Monta Ellis. The Warriors are set as 2-point underdogs against New Orleans on Wednesday.

    Notes and tips

NIT bettors are jumping on the Stanford Cardinal in their semifinal matchup with the Nevada Wolf Pack on Wednesday. Stanford opened as a 5.5-point favorite but was pegged at -6 across the board by late Tuesday evening. A little more than 56 percent of *********** Consensus bettors are backing Stanford.

Denver Nuggets forward Danilo Gallinari could miss up to four weeks because of a broken left thumb. Gallinari left Monday's 112-95 loss to the Dallas Mavericks in the third quarter after attempting to block a shot and hitting the thumb on the backboard. X-rays revealed a fracture after the game. The 23-year-old leads the Nuggets in scoring at 15.6 points per game.

Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Andrej Meszaros will undergo surgery Wednesday to remove a small disk fracture in his lower back and will miss six to eight weeks. The procedure will be done by Dr. Alex Vaccaro at Thomas Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia. Meszaros has missed the Flyers' last nine contests and has seven goals and 18 assists in 62 games this season.

The Memphis Grizzlies signed veteran guard Gilbert Arenas to a contract on Tuesday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed for Arenas, who worked out with the team on Monday. Arenas has been out of the NBA since the Orlando Magic used their amnesty provision to rid themselves of his $63 million contract this past offseason. The Los Angeles Lakers took a look at Arenas last month but passed on signing the veteran, who posted a career-low 10.8 points on 36.6 percent shooting last season. He’s undergone multiple surgeries on his left knee but has recently done platelet rich plasma therapy, which he says has helped.

      Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- UMass came back from down 10 at the half to beat Drexel and advance to the NIT semifinals in New York next week.

-- Danny Hurley left Wagner for Rhode Island. Hard for low majors like Wagner to maintain excellence; as soon as a coach wins a little, he's off to greener pa$ture$. Just the way it is.

-- Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton is lobbying hard for the Illinois job; Michael Jordan once hired Hamilton to coach the Wizards, and one of his assistants has strong recruiting ties in Chicago. He would do well there.

-- Washington Huskies outlasted Oregon 90-86, are also headed to NYC for the NIT semifinals; curious to see if all the Huskies come back next season or stupidly bolt early for the NBA.

-- When Octavio Dotel gets in his first game this season, he'll set a new big league record by playing for his 13th big league team in only 13 years.

-- Best wishes go out to Jerry Tarkanian, who had a mild heart attack on Tuesday. Luckily for him, he was in a doctor's office when it happened and is said to be doing well. It is ridiculously stupid that the 81-year old Tarkanian isn't in the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.........

      13) 6.45M brackets were entered on ESPN.com; after the first weekend, only three were perfect. Three. Out of 6.45 million.

      12) Ohio State played Cincinnati for the national title in basketball in both 1961 and 1962 (Robert M Knight was a Buckeye sub back in those days), but they’ve only played once since, in 2006, with Ohio State winning 72-50 in Mick Cronin’s first year as UC coach. Dick Vitale wrote some stuff on ESPN.com this week saying its Ohio State that doesn't want to play.

      11) Four Big East teams are in the Sweet 16, but with three of them being Cincinnati-Louisville-Marquette, it might be more accurate to note that the old Conference USA is having an excellent tournament (had Memphis/ Florida State in, too).

      10) You wonder why the 49ers went after Peyton Manning; they just had a great season with Alex Smith at QB- he bonded with his new coach, most every intangible went their way, and they seemed to have a bright future. Question has to be asked; did the pursuit of Manning damage the Harbaugh/ Smith relationship? Smith re-signed with the Niners, and we all know its a business, but some damage had to be done there.

      9) How tough are football players? Patriots lineman Logan Mankins unknowingly played in the Super Bowl with a torn ACL; he had it operated on right after, which is why the Pats signed Robert Gallery this week to play some guard next season.

      8) Danilo Gallinari broke his thumb Monday, is out 3-4 weeks, which is most of the rest of the regular season, which cripples Denver’s chances of making the playoffs. This is a year where anyone can win the title; just get in the tournament and see what happens, but this injury really hurts the Nuggets.

      7) Southern Illinois wants Bruce Weber back as hoop coach, which makes sense- they won a lot when he was there the first time, which is how he got the Illinois gig. He seems like more of an MVC guy than a big-timer, and that’s a compliment. Illinois wants Shaka Smart; no idea what direction they’ll go in if Smart turns them down.

      6) Why is Vladimir Guerrero unemployed? Wouldn't the A's be better off with Guerrero at DH and no Coco Crisp/Manny Ramirez, especially since Cespedes is going to play CF? Hard to believe the Bronx baseball team be improved if they had Guerrero as DH, or are they stuck with having to rest their aging stars as DHs every so often?

      5) Top free agent pitchers next winter are Matt Cain/Cole Hamels. Both figure to get ridiculously wealthy if they stay healthy this season.

      4) Southern Miss revoked the band scholarships of five musicians who hurled racial slurs at a Kansas State player last week; I had no idea band members even got scholarships. Now after seeing Oregon’s cheerleaders, I’m wondering if they get financial aid. Couple of them should.......lol

      3) If the NBA playoffs started tomorrow, which they do not, the first round matchups would be:
East: Knicks @ Bulls; Celtics @ Heat; Pacers @ 76ers; Hawks @ Magic.
West: Rockets @ Thunder; Nuggets @ Spurs; Mavs @ Clippers; Grizzlies @ Lakers.

      2) In the NHL, same scenario, matchups would be:
      East: Washington-Rangers; Ottawa-Boston; New Jersey-Florida; Philly-Pittsburgh.
      West, Kings-St Louis; Colorado-Vancouver; Chicago-Dallas and Detroit-Nashville.

      1) Not a lot of enthusiasm for the Metropolitans in the Big Apple. Lousy ownership does that to a fanbase. Mets haven’t sold out their home opener yet. Think even the A’s and Pirates sell out the home opener.

College funds: Wednesday's best NIT bets
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Minnesota Golden Gophers at Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders (-3, 134)

A road victory over an in-state rival combined with Minnesota's upset of Miami gave Middle Tennessee State a home game with a chance to earn a trip to the NIT semifinals.

The Blue Raiders used a phenomenal finish - they closed the game on a 15-0 run - to knock off top-seeded Tennessee on Monday, setting up a home contest against Minnesota, which was dominant from the outset in a 78-60 win at Miami in the second round.

The No. 6-seed Golden Gophers have been road warriors in the tournament, winning at La Salle in the first round and at Miami in the second round. They never trailed against the Hurricanes, opening the game on a 12-0 run and extending their 12-point halftime lead with a 15-2 run early in the second half.

Perhaps the most impressive part of Minnesota's run through the first two rounds is that it has come without 6-foot-11 senior Ralph Sampson III, who averages 7.9 points and 4.6 rebounds and provides a menacing presence in the post. Sampson was expected to return for the opener against La Salle but still has not made his return from a knee injury.

Minnesota is one of six teams with 25 or more wins in the history of the NIT. The Gophers have reached at least the second round in 11 of their 14 NIT appearances.

                  Pick: Golden Gophers

Nevada Wolf Pack at Stanford Cardinal (-6, 137.5)

Less than 48 hours after rallying to beat Illinois State in overtime, third-seeded Stanford hosts No. 5-seed Nevada in the NIT quarterfinals with a trip to New York’s Madison Square Garden on the line.

Nevada, the Western Athletic Conference regular season champion, opened the NIT with wins over Oral Roberts and Bucknell, and the Wolf Pack have won nine of their last 11 games.

The Wolf Pack advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time in program history after forward Olek Czyz scored 24 points in the team’s 75-67 victory over eighth-seeded Bucknell on Sunday.

WAC Player of the Year Deonte Burton averages a team-high 14.8 points, and his matchup with Stanford point guard Chasson Randle should be worth the price of admission. One win away from equaling the school record of 29 victories set in 2006-07, Nevada held opponents to 40.9 percent shooting to lead the WAC.
Like Nevada, Stanford is a solid defensive team that holds opponents to an average of 63.7 points.

                  Pick: Wolf Pack

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fullcourt report: Sweet 16 betting news and notes
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    East Region

The East held form in the top half of the bracket with No. 1-seed Syracuse and No. 4-seed Wisconsin advancing to the Sweet Sixteen. From the bottom half, No. 2-seed Ohio State is still alive with No. 6-seed Cincinnati rounding out the group. There were no upsets in the East in the first eight games played as the higher seed won every game and we only saw one upset in the Round of 32 when No. 6-seed Cincinnati beat No. 3-seed Florida State 62-56 as a 2-point underdog. However, of the top seeds, only Wisconsin made it through with a perfect 2-0 against the spread (ATS) record as Syracuse and Ohio State both went 1-1 ATS last week.

Ohio State is a solid 8-point favorite over Cincinnati on Thursday night, but the Bearcats have been on a terrific pointspread run since the second week of February, going 10-3 ATS over their last 13 games, including a 4-2 ATS mark as an underdog. Syracuse is a 3.5-point favorite over Wisconsin in the first game on Thursday.

Unlike Cincinnati, the Orangemen are on a terrible pointspread run at just 5-11 ATS over their last 16 games. However, Syracuse has won 14 of those 16 games straight up, with nine of those wins coming by seven or more points. Keep in mind Syracuse is now playing without their 7-foot center Fab Melo, who was ruled ineligible last week before the NCAA Tournament began. Melo is only sixth on the team in scoring at 7.8 points per game, however he is a force defensively and was name the Big East Defensive Player of the Year. He also led the Orangemen in rebounding (5.8) and blocks (2.9) per game this season.

                    West Region

The West has three of the top four seeds remaining alive with No. 1-seed Michigan State, No.3-seed Marquette, and No. 4-seed Louisville playing in the Sweet Sixteen. After No. 15-seed Norfolk State’s major upset of No. 2-seed Missouri as a 21-point underdog, the bottom of the bracket was wide open and No. 7-seed Florida took advantage to complete the foursome. Florida also had the easiest game in the Round of 32 as they beat Norfolk State by a whopping 34 points (84-50) as a 14-point favorite. Michigan State, Louisville, and Marquette won their games by a combined 16 points.

Both games in the West on Thursday night are projected to be close as Marquette is just a 1.5-point favorite over Florida and Michigan State is just a 5-point favorite over Louisville. Favorites cashed at a 75 percent clip (9-3 ATS) in the first two rounds in the West Region with their average win coming by a whopping 14.9 points per game.

                    Midwest Region

The Midwest didn’t quite play out as the other three regions. The top two seeds, No. 1-seed North Carolina and No. 2-seed Kansas are still alive. But the No. 3-seed through No. 10 seeds were all eliminated which left No. 11-seed NC State and No. 13-seed Ohio as two surprise teams in the Sweet 16. Kansas narrowly covered the spread against Detroit in their 85-70 win as a 14-point favorite and were never covering against Purdue as an 8-point favorite and the Jayhawks were lucky to escape with a 63-60 win as they trailed outright for the majority of that game.

North Carolina has been the most impressive team in the Midwest as the Tar Heels won their two games by 19 and 14 points, while going 2-0 ATS. However, UNC suffered a major blow on Sunday when point guard Kendall Marshall fractured his wrist against Creighton. Marshall underwent surgery on Monday and had a screw inserted in his injured wrist and his status for Friday's game versus Ohio is still uncertain. Marshall is shooting 46.7 percent from the floor this season, including 35.4 percent from 3-point range, and most importantly he leads the Tar Heels with 351 assists. No other player has more than 45 assists this season.

NC State and Ohio are a combined 4-0 ATS so far in the NCAA Tournament. The Wolfpack and the Bobcats are both sizeable underdogs on Friday night; NC State is +8 against Kansas, while Ohio is +10.5 against North Carolina. The Wolfpack are on a perfect 7-0-1 ATS run with five of those wins coming in the role of an underdog. Ohio actually came into this tournament on a downswing as the Bobcats were on a 1-4 ATS run prior to their two pointspread covers against Michigan and South Florida.

                    South Region

The South mostly played to form with three of the top four seeds remaining alive in the NCAA Tournament with No. 1-seed Kentucky, No. 3-seed Baylor, and No. 4-seed Indiana all making the Sweet 16. The bottom two games of the South bracket saw two upsets when No. 10-seed Xavier beat No. 7-seed Notre Dame and No. 15-seed Lehigh beat No. 2-seed Duke. Xavier completes the quartet. This will be the fourth time over the last five years in which the Musketeers have won at least two games in the NCAA tournament.

Kentucky (-9 over Indiana) and Baylor (-6 over Xavier) are both big favorites on Friday to advance to the Elite 8. After failing to cover their large 26.5-point spread against overmatched Western Kentucky, the Wildcats showed their superiority with an 87-71 win over Iowa State as an 11-point favorite. Baylor is 2-0 ATS if you are a good shopper as the Bears snuck inside the number (-7.5) with a 68-60 win over South Dakota State. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Red Wings at New York Rangers (-145, 5)

The New York Rangers became the first team in the East to clinch a playoff spot with Tuesday’s win over New Jersey and look ready to fight to hold on to the No. 1 seed.

Brandon Prust, Stu Bickel and Mike Rupp all dropped their gloves just three seconds into Tuesday’s game, setting the tone for the club’s 4-2 victory.

"We've really worked hard all year for this opportunity," Brandon Dubinsky told reporters after recording a goal and an assist. "I think from the get-go we said the playoffs wasn't our goal. We want home-ice advantage. We want to put ourselves in a good position going into the playoffs, and more importantly, we want to try to be playing our best hockey going in."

That win was just New York’s third in eight games, but could be the victory that the club needs for the final push of the regular season.

The Rangers also catch a break with Detroit’s starting goaltender Jimmy Howard out again with a groin injury.

                        Pick: Rangers

St. Louis Blues at Anaheim Ducks (+115, 5)

The trip back to St. Louis would have felt a lot longer if the Blues didn’t come away with a 3-1 win over Tampa Bay Saturday.

St. Louis had dropped consecutive games on the road, but managed to blanket Tampa Bay’s attack in a textbook Ken Hitchcock victory.

"We know that we've got a ways to go and that we can't take nights off like we did before tonight ... the last four or five games," forward T. J. Oshie told reporters. "That wasn't the way that we play and the way we can win. ... (This win) as a whole, we made a big jump as a team."

While the Blues are trying to lock down first place overall in the league, you just don’t know what you’re going to get from the Ducks these days. They made a good run for the playoffs but look to be running out of steam.

                        Pick: Blues
