Tuesday’s betting tips: Bucks-Blazers total jumps

    Who’s hot

NBA: The over is 7-1 in Sacramento’s last eight.

NBA: Phoenix has covered the number in four consecutive games.

NCAAB: Oregon has covered in seven straight road games.

NCAAB: Drexel is 16-6 against the spread in its last 22.

NHL: Chicago has won six straight meetings with Columbus.

NHL: Pittsburgh has won 23 of its last 29.

    Who’s not

NBA: Portland is 3-8 against the spread in its last 11.

NBA: The L.A. Clippers are 1-5 against the spread in their last six.

NCAAB: The over is 5-13 in Washington’s last 18.

NCAAB: The under is 7-19-1 in Oakland’s last 27 home games.

NHL: The over is 1-10 in Philadelphia’s last 11.

NHL: Phoenix has three wins in its last 10.

    Key stat

55.2 – Drexel is allowing just 55.2 points per game in its last five but will be tested by UMass in Tuesday’s NIT quarterfinals. The Minutemen average 77.5 points per game this season, ranking 15th in the country.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Kendall Marshall, North Carolina Tar Heels - Marshall underwent surgery Monday on his broken right wrist, leaving his status for Friday's NCAA regional semifinals against Ohio up in the air. Marshall broke a bone in his wrist Sunday during the top-seeded Tar Heels' 87-73 second-round win over Creighton. A screw was placed in the wrist during the procedure. Marshall, who suffered the injury to his non-shooting hand, had 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting and 11 assists Sunday, helping to send North Carolina to its record 25th Sweet 16 appearance.

    Game of the day

Los Angeles Clippers at Indiana Pacers (-3.5, 187.5)

    Notable quotable

"Defensively we didn't give them a lot of easy buckets. Tonight our defensive effort wasn't what it needed to be so we're going to have to pick that up a lot. They're very efficient offensively especially at home and we're going to have to try and get them under control a little bit." – Oregon coach Dana Altman after his club beat Iowa 108-97 to advance to the NIT quarterfinals Tuesday against Washington. It will be the third meeting of the season between the two teams, with both clubs securing comfortable home wins so far. The Ducks are set as 4.5-point road underdogs.

    Notes and tips

Most oddsmakers opened with a total of 203 or 204 points for Tuesday’s matchup between the Milwaukee Bucks and the Portland Trail Blazers, but that number had moved to as high as 206.5 by late Thursday evening. The over is 23-6 in Milwaukee’s last 29 overall.

New York Knicks point guard Baron Davis could return from a hamstring injury as early as Tuesday’s game against the Toronto Raptors. Davis tweaked his right hamstring in Friday’s opener of a home-and-home set with the Indiana Pacers and sat out Saturday’s second half in Indiana. However, the injury is not as bad as first suspected and the team is not taking any chances with the veteran guard. Jeremy Lin and Mike Bibby split time at point guard Saturday. Davis is averaging 4.8 points and 5.3 assists since returning to action from a back injury on Feb. 20.

Alexander Radulov may finally be returning to Music City. Radulov's Russian agent Yuri Nikolaev confirmed to Sovetsky Sport on Monday that "the matter has been resolved within the framework of the Kontinental Hockey League regulations. Alexander is leaving for Nashville." That information was confirmed by Yahoo! Sports, although TSN's Pierre LeBrun noted that Predators general manager David Poile texted him with the words "Still waiting". Radulov, who was the 15th overall pick by Nashville in the 2004 draft, has 25 goals and 38 assists with Ufa Salavat Yulayev of the KHL this season.

Boston Red Sox lefthander Jon Lester will once again be the team's Opening Day starter, manager Bobby Valentine announced on Monday. Lester was Boston's most dependable pitcher last season, going 15-9 with a 3.47 ERA and 182 strikeouts in 191 2/3 innings. The 28-year-old Lester will face reigning AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander when he squares off against the Detroit Tigers on April 13.

      Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Six QB’s who changed teams this winter but won’t start next season:

-- Brady Quinn—Took pay cut to go from Denver to KC. Maybe he should’ve stayed.

-- Drew Stanton—Will his presence motivate Mark Sanchez to work harder? Nah.

-- Dan Orlovsky— This guy has a knack for being on terrible teams (’08 Lions/’11 Colts). Now he's a Buccaneer.

-- Jason Campbell—Think he got a raw deal with the Redskins.

-- Kyle Orton—Got small fortune to stand next to Jason Garrett and root for Tony Romo.

-- Chad Henne—Figures to be big loser now that Tebow appears headed to Jax’ville.

      ******************

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

      13) Its funny how the biggest winner in the Peyton Manning sweepstakes might be the Jaguars’ ticket office, since it probably means the Broncos will trade Tebow to northern Florida, where he is a god.

Not sure if its good news for the Jags’ new coach, since he will be stuck with a project QB who is extremely popular with the home fans, and will spur a big boost in ticket sales, but isn't an accurate passer.

First big decision for the Jags' new owner, Shahid Khan.

      12) 25% of the Sweet head coaches, that’s four out of 16, were student managers, not players in college. Mick Cronin/Scott Drew are coach’s sons; Tom Crean/Buzz Williams are the other two. I mention this because that’s how I put myself through college, and yes, it makes me feel good to see guys like that succeed.

      11) Jamaal Tinsley is a 34-year old NBA veteran trying to extend his career as long as he can; he hadn’t been playing much for the Jazz, so as part of his game day training regimen, he ran twice a day before the game, runs totaling nine miles. That’s the kind of dedication it takes to be a professional.

      10) Over the last five years, Georgetown is 2-4 in the NCAA tournament; teams they beat were 14-15 seeds; teams they lost to were 10-11-11-14 seeds. Not an impressive record there.

      9) Manager of sportsbook at Ceaser’s Palace said the book made $300,000 Sunday, just on the Cincinnati-Florida State game, as bettors tried to get even with the last game of the weekend.

      8) Godson update; my godson is a college pitcher for a Division II team; this is his second year. He did well last year (allowed five hits in 63 AB) so we’re continuing his updates this season.

So far in three appearances, he’s allowed two hits, two walks and a run in four IP, with three strikeouts. He’s a lefty reliever and he might have a future in the game, if he keeps working at it. Seven kids from the league he plays in got drafted by the pros last spring.

      7) If you go to spring training games in Florida, you can go see the Rays for as little as $9. If you go to see the Bronox Bombers play, tickets range from $20 to $40, for spring training games in a minor league park.

      6) Rays’ OF Sam Fuld’s mom is a state senator from New Hampshire.

      5) College basketball is such a long season. Cincinnati Bearcats are in the Sweet 16, their season is now a rousing success, but back on Nov 19, when they lost at home to Presbyterian, things weren’t looking quite as rosy. Lot can change in a couple months.

      4) NC State coach Mark Gottfried was seen on camera celebrating with his players when the Wolfpack were shown as an 11 seed in the tournament. For the kids, it was their first shot at March Madness. For Gottfried, in addition to this season becoming a full-blown success, it meant he also bagged a $1.5M bonus. Not a bad day’s work.

      3) Hard to believe that VCU scored on only two of its last 16 possessions Saturday. They had Indiana by the throat but let them get away, much to Kentucky’s delight. Wildcats will be out for revenge Friday night.

      2) Mets’ ownership settled the Madoff case for $162M, very bad news for Met fans, since it means the inept Wilpons will likely stay in charge of the team. They’re both corrupt and stupid, always an excellent combination.

      1) Seriously, how happy is John Fox today? He looked like a genius the way he milked a playoff spot out of the Broncos last year, now he gets handed Peyton Manning, supposedly healthy as ever. Rest of the AFC West can’t be very freakin’ happy.

MLB odds: Who will be this year's surprise team?

It's easy to jump on the big boys right now when it comes to Major League Baseball season over-unders. After all, it's spring training, most of the national media attention has been paid to teams like the Yankees and the Red Sox and the Phillies, and they are clearly on everyone's radar to begin with anyway.

But it's those true gems out there that can really give your summer a lift. Those upstart teams that have plenty of potential and promise -- clubs that you can feel good rooting for -- can come with great value, too.

The Arizona Diamondbacks won 94 games in 2011 after winning just 65 the year before. The San Diego Padres pulled the same trick in 2010, winning 90 games even though they went 75-87 the prior season. And the Seattle Mariners came out of left field in 2009 winning 85 games after losing 100 games in their previous campaign.

All of those teams made a lot of money for bettors those seasons, so let's take a look at some of the possible diamonds in the rough, teams that you can jump on now and hope for a little magic-carpet ride through 162 games (Odds courtesy of TheGreek.com):

        Pittsburgh Pirates

        2011 Record: 72-90.
        2012 Over-Under: 73.5 wins.

It gets lost when you look at their September struggle, but the Pirates energized Pittsburgh for four months last season, before the Steelers opened camp of course, and actually held first place in the National League Central for a few days. And keep in mind, that division produced two playoff teams, including the World Series champion.

Even with a fall to forget, Pittsburgh still recorded 72 wins, and things are looking brighter for the Bucs. The Pirates have more pitching this season - they added Erik Bedard and A.J. Burnett - and star outfielder Andrew McCutchen signed a new deal over the summer, which should allow him to relax and start the season on a good note.

McCutchen had 89 RBIs last season, and with support in the lineup -- with newcomer Casey McGehee (23 home runs and 104 RBIs in 2010) joining Neil Walker (83 RBIs, 76 runs last season) in the fold -- Pittsburgh should be more potent and powerful.

        Cleveland Indians

        2011 Record: 80-82.
        2012 Over-Under: 78.5 wins.

There are question marks in some important positions like first base -- Cleveland added journeyman Casey Kotchman because that's about the best they could do -- but there's skill in other places, and perhaps enough pop in the lineup to be a .500 team.

Shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera (.273 average, 25 homers, 92 RBIs) is coming off a career year, and outfielder Shin-Soo Choo (.259, 8, 36, and 12 steals) seems refocused after serving his South Korean military time in the offseason.

But where the Indians will try to do the most damage is on the mound. Cleveland, building off an impressive 80-win campaign last season when nothing was expected of them, has not been shy about adding payroll and stockpiling starting-pitching talent, and as a result, they have a decent staff.

Ubaldo Jimenez leads a crew that also includes Justin Masterson and Derek Lowe. These guys have won before, and may be able to carry the Indians if the bats sleepwalk through some summer slumps.

        Minnesota Twins

        2011 Record: 63-99.
        2012 Over-Under: 73.5 wins.

A team known for inexpensive, consistent success took a huge step back last year because of injuries and a morale problem. But the Twins still have talent, and now that they are healthy, well, they come with tremendous value this season.

Let's face it: When Joe Mauer hits just three homers and drives in 30, and Justin Morneau hits just .227 with the same amount of RBIs, you're going to have problems in the American League ... and the Twins did.

But both are back now, and though the American League Central will be a tough trek, Minnesota should have enough to get to 80-something wins, right? Clearly, Detroit is a favorite to win the division, and the Tigers have depth and drive. But the Twins should be able to make the most of their division games against Kansas City and Chicago, and really challenge that over by the end of summer.

          Armadillo's Write-Up

          Tuesday, March 20

Drexel coach Flint came to Drexel from UMass, where he took over from John Calipari; his Dragons are 27-2 in last 29 games, holding opponents to 28.8% behind arc (#5 in country). Drexel lost to St Joe's by 13, their only game vs an A-14 foe. UMass likes to run; they've won five of last six games, with first two tourney wins also on road. Minutemen are 2-0 vs CAA doormats, beating Northeastern by 16, Towson State by 30.

Oregon-Washington are bitter conference rivals; home side won both in series this year- Ducks lost 76-60 here Dec 31, then crushed Huskies by 25 at home Feb 9. Oregon won six of last seven games, losing by point to Colorado in Pac-12 tourney; they've won five of last seven road tilts. Washington is 13-4 in its last 17 games, winning first two tourney games by 10-21 points- they won last seven at home, six by 8+ points.

Oakland won nine of last 11 games, winning last four home games, all by 8+ points; Grizzlies have nation's leading scorer in 5-11 senior Hamilton. They won by hoop at Houston, in only game vs C-USA foe. Rice won its last two road games, at UTEP/UL-Lafayette- they don't defend arc well, which could be problem vs Grizzlies' gunners. Oakland gets 35.6% of its points behind arc- they're also a terrible defensive team.

College funds: Tuesday's best NIT bets
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Massachusetts Minutemen at Drexel Dragons (-6.5, N/A)

Many believed the Dragons belonged in the NCAA tournament, but at least the NIT showed Drexel some love with three straight home games.

The Dragons dropped Central Florida 81-56 on Wednesday and Northern Iowa 65-63 on Sunday. Drexel, which utilizes a seven-man rotation, is fifth in the nation in scoring defense at 55.7 points as Bruiser Flint continues the defense-first philosophy he installed at Massachusetts. The Dragons are also No. 4 in 3-point field goal defense (28.8 percent), but will be put to the test as Massachusetts is 23rd in scoring (76.8 points per game).

The Minutemen upset No. 1 seed Temple 77-71 in the Atlantic 10 tournament before losing the next day to St. Bonaventure 84-80. Massachusetts has done it on the road in the NIT with victories over Mississippi State in double overtime on March 13 and Seton Hall on Saturday, but the Dragons will be tough to beat in their own den.

          Pick: Dragons

Oregon Ducks at Washington Huskies (-4.5, N/A)

It’s been a down year for the Pac-12, but the conference is assured of having one team in the NIT semifinals with No. 3 seed Oregon visiting top-seeded Washington for the chance to play in New York’s Madison Square Garden.

The rivals split the season series, with both teams winning at home. The Huskies cruised to a 76-60 win on Dec. 31, and Oregon beat Washington 82-57 on Feb. 9. The Huskies were openly rooting for a third game with the Ducks after routing Northwestern by 21 points last Friday.

The Ducks have averaged 102 points in their first two NIT games, but they’ve also allowed an average of 86.5. Look for another high-scoring game against Washington, which averages 75.4 points.

The Ducks had five players in double-figures for the second consecutive game against Iowa, and E.J. Singler led the way with 25 points. Singler, who recently became the 13th player in school history with over 1,000 career points and 500 career rebounds, averaged 16.5 points and 8.5 boards in two games against Washington this season.

          Pick: Ducks

Ice picks: Tuesday's best NHL bets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Phoenix Coyotes at Dallas Stars (-130, 5)

Tuesday will be a huge day in the Western Conference.

Phoenix and Dallas square off tied with 83 points apiece, though Dallas currently occupies top spot in the Pacific division thanks to the club’s 39 wins. With as many as five teams battling for the final two playoff spots in the West, this might as well be a playoff game for both teams.

Phoenix got late goals from Ray Whitney and Raffi Torres to crawl back from a 2-0 deficit with 12 minutes remaining in regulation on Sunday to down Edmonton 3-2 in a shootout.

"Every game matters so much for us right now," Coyotes defenseman Keith Yandle told reporters. "We fumbled it around a bit in the first period, but I think we played our game more as the game wore on. We were able to work them down low and find a way to win."

The Coyotes have won three straight meetings with Dallas and the Stars are struggling in their own end right now, having allowed nine goals in the last two games.

                    Pick: Coyotes

Calgary Flames at Colorado Avalanche (-135, 5)

The Calgary Flames’ playoff hopes are still flickering, but they have to stop giving away points in winnable games.

Calgary lost its second straight contest Sunday, falling 2-1 in a shootout to Columbus after losing 3-1 at Edmonton on Friday.

“We all know in this locker room that it’s unacceptable, especially at this time of the year, but the last thing you want to do right now is sit and dwell on it. We have to learn from what we did,” Flames winger Blake Comeau told reporters.

Offense has been a problem for the Flames all season and even though they outshot Columbus 31-18, they couldn’t take advantage of their chances. Calgary also hasn’t scored a power play goal in five games.

Meanwhile, Colorado has picked up nine points over the last five games and is coming off an impressive 3-1 win over the Rangers.

                    Pick: Under

Pucking the trends: This week's best NHL bets
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in the National Hockey League.

                      HOT TEAM: Pittsburgh Penguins

So much attention has been paid to Sidney Crosby, it was easy to let the Penguins’ march toward the No. 1 seed in the East slip by. And now that he’s back, he’ll get even more publicity. The Penguins were the hottest team in the league before No. 87 returned, and now that he’s back, well, look out, folks.

Saturday’s 5-2 win over the Devils in New Jersey -- in which Crosby had three assists -- was the Penguins’ 11th consecutive, and Crosby was only a part of two of them. Headed into Sunday’s matinee versus the Flyers in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh hadn’t lost since Feb. 19, a 6-2 decision at Buffalo.

What's amazing about this run is the defense that Pittsburgh has been displaying throughout. Everyone knows about the offense -- Evgeni Malkin scored his 40th of the season Saturday -- and the goaltending -- the win over the Devils was Marc-Andre Fleury's 39th of the year -- but the defense has been stifling. New Jersey only mustered 14 shots on net in Saturday’s loss. That pace keeps up, Pittsburgh might cruise to the Stanley Cup final.

                      COLD TEAM: New York Rangers

While the Penguins keep chipping away at the Rangers’ lead, New York keeps squeezing its collective stick a little too much. This is still, very much, a deep, driven, determined team, but the dog days of spring have hit, and perhaps the Rangers are doing a little too much scoreboard watching, and not enough analysis of their own game.

Saturday’s 3-1 loss to Colorado in New York was the Rangers’ fifth in the last seven games. The Rangers have been able to stop the bleeding somewhat at times in March by beating up on cupcakes -- 4-3 over the Islanders on March 11, 4-2 over Carolina on March 14 -- but the numbers overall are not pretty. They’ve lost six games in the month, and have been held to two goals or less four times.

Things should start improving for the Rangers now that Henrik Lundqvist is back in the nets after missing two games with the flu, and captain Ryan Callahan is back with the team after missing six games with a bruised foot.

                      OVER PLAY: Vancouver Canucks

You know the postseason isn’t far away when you look at the scores on a nightly basis, and the goals just aren’t there. Friday night was a perfect example: Five NHL games played, four unders. So, if you can spot an over team at this time of year, jump on them because they are few and far between.

The Canucks appear to be one. Vancouver outlasted Columbus, 4-3, on Saturday to record its fourth over in the last six games. The Canucks have both scored and allowed eight goals in the last two games, and while it’s unlikely that pace will keep up, it does bear watching. Especially because Monday's game at the Wild in Minnesota will begin a four-game road trip, that will also see stops in Chicago, Dallas and Colorado.

We all know that Vancouver -- with Roberto Luongo and Cory Schneider and net -- can stop the puck when it counts and coach Alain Vigneault can clamp down defensively when needed, and that will likely happen soon. But for now, there’s money to be won with Vancouver overs, so get them while they’re hot.

                      UNDER PLAY: Edmonton Oilers

On the opposite end of totals plays, there is plenty to choose from. The unders are coming in bunches for a lot of teams, but we'll call on Edmonton this week, as the Oilers continue to play out the string.

Headed into Sunday's game against Columbus in Edmonton, the Oilers were riding a four-game under streak, and had posted five unders in their last six games. They've been tight on the backline, and have compiled just enough offense to get by, defeating Calgary, 3-1 on Friday, and Columbus, 3-0, on Wednesday.

Along the way, the momentum of the defensive pace has built. In the win over Calgary, the Oilers did not dress forward Linus Omark and instead opted to go with seven defensemen. And under players will tell you, if you want a team who can get you to the window, the more defensemen, the better.

                      SURVEYING THE SCHEDULE:

** The Devils seemingly have settled into that No. 6 seed in the East, but Ottawa is coming fast, and the rest of this month will truly test New Jersey if it wants to stay in that position. They have seven games left in March, and beware of a brutal back-to-back set, starting on Monday: They play at the Rangers and then 24 hours later, they play at the Senators.

** San Jose is not supposed to be battling for the No. 8 seed in the West, yet there the Sharks are. Saturday's 3-2 overtime win over Detroit will help, but this stretch run will not be easy for San Jose, and it starts this week. On Monday and Tuesday, they have the double dip versus Anaheim and Los Angeles, respectively, and 48 hours later, on Wednesday, they'll meet Boston. Keep a close eye on this enigmatic bunch.
