Pick 'n' roll: Friday's best NBA bets
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oddsmakers have yet to set a line for the Magic-Nets matchup. Pick should be considered an early lean.

New Jersey Nets at Orlando Magic (N/A)

Now that the Orlando Magic can finally put this Dwight Howard mess behind them, maybe they can finally start focusing on basketball.

After flip-flopping on whether he wanted to stay with the team numerous times, Howard waived his early termination option on Thursday, meaning he will be with Orlando through the 2012-13 season.

“It’s been very tough for me the past couple of months to make a decision," Howard told reporters. "I’ve gone back and forth. It’s not as easy as people think. It’s very hard. I just love this city too much. I love the people here. I love this organization."

Orlando took a 122-111 loss at San Antonio on Thursday, which snapped a three-game winning streak. Howard was his usual dominant self, putting up 22 points and 12 rebounds in the loss.

You can expect a real love-in when the club gets back on its home floor now that the Howard drama is over and the Magic have covered in six of their last seven at the Amway Center.

    Pick: Magic

    Miami Heat at Philadelphia 76ers (3.5, 190.5)

The Philadelphia 76ers will get a second chance to make a statement game at home against the Miami Heat on Friday night.

They hope it goes better than the last opportunity, when Miami snapped Philadelphia's four-game winning streak with a 20-point blowout victory on Feb. 3 that triggered a stretch of 11 losses in 17 games for the Sixers. The Heat have won the last nine regular-season meetings and have covered in four of the last six.

In the midst of a six-game stretch against Eastern Conference contenders, Miami is coming off back-to-back road losses at Orlando and Chicago, which was without reigning league MVP Derrick Rose. Dwyane Wade (36) and LeBron James combined for 71 of the 102 points vs. the Bulls as the Heat absorbed their fourth consecutive defeat away from home.

The Heat will get back on track and continue their dominance against Philly.

    Pick: Heat

Ice picks: Friday's best NHL bets
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Montreal Canadiens at Ottawa Senators (-175, 5.5)

The Montreal Canadiens may not be heading to the playoffs, but they could have a big impact on where the Senators end up in the standings.

The two teams complete a home-and-home Friday night at Scotiabank Place after Montreal came away with a 3-2 shootout victory at the Bell Centre on Thursday.

David Desharnais scored his 16th goal of the season, recording his 11th point in the last eight games, and tallied again in the shootout to pace the Habs.

"For the most part, this team doesn't bring the best out in us, for some reason," Ottawa coach Paul MacLean told reporters. "We don't seem to be able to skate the way we've skated when we're successful. For whatever reason we don't skate very good against this team, and we have to find a solution to that. They play us real well."

Montreal has won four of its last five against Ottawa, which is battling Boston for the top spot in the Northeast. After Friday’s meeting, these two clubs will close out their season series in Montreal on Thursday.

      Pick: Canadiens

Chicago Blackhawks at Dallas Stars (-130, 5.5)

After taking a 5-2 beating from the Winnipeg Jets on Wednesday night, Dallas Stars head coach Glen Gulutzan wasn’t exactly surprised at his team’s shoddy effort.

The Stars were riding a 10-0-1 streak heading into that game and with teams battling for playoff position, they were bound to have an off game sooner or later.

"Usually these things come down with a thud,” Gulutzan told reporters. “They don't usually go down in a shootout, last minute or a 2-1. They usually come down pretty hard, take the wind out of you a little bit and maybe wake you up.”

The Stars gave starting goaltender Kari Lehtonen a night off and with Richard Bachman in the cage, found themselves down 5-0 in the second period before they finally woke up.

You can bet Lehtonen will be back in goal Friday. He is coming off back-to-back shutouts and should be able to get the Stars back on track against the Blackhawks.

Dallas is 5-1 in its last six meetings with Chicago.

      Pick: Stars
