    Who’s not

NCAAB: Bucknell is 0-6 against the number in its last six non-conference games.

NCAAB: Manhattan is 1-4 against the spread in its last five.

NCAAB: The over is 3-8 in Fairfield’s last 11.

NBA: New Orleans is 2-8 against the spread in its last 10 home games.

NBA: Detroit is 8-20 against the spread in its last 28 road games.

NHL: Phoenix is 4-14-1 in its last 19 games in Vancouver.

NHL: Montreal is 1-5 in its last six home games.

    Key stat

10 – Vermont has held its opposition to fewer than 60 points 10 times this season and has held three of its last four opponents to fewer than 50 points. However, the Catamounts will play against a Lamar team that averages just under 74 points per contest and has won six straight games after coach Pat Knight called out his seniors saying they were “stealing money being on scholarship.”

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Craig Anderson, Ottawa Senators – The Ottawa goaltender is officially listed as questionable for Wednesday’s meeting with Montreal. Anderson has been out of the lineup since Feb. 22 when he cut his finger preparing a meal but has been participating in the team’s practices lately. He is 29-19-6 this season with .913 save percentage.

    Game of the day

South Florida Bulls vs. California Golden Bears (-3, 115)

    Notable quotable

"I do think he is the key to their offense. His ability to move without the basketball, to come off screens and shoot it or drive into gaps and make plays for other people, and just the pace that he plays at is at a really high level. The only way we have a chance is if we can hold our own against him." – South Florida Bulls coach Stan Heath on containing Cal’s Jorge Gutierrez, the Pac-12 Player of the Year.

    Notes and tips

The Golden State Warriors acquired center Andrew Bogut and forward Stephen Jackson from the Milwaukee Bucks for guard Monta Ellis, power forward Ekpe Udoh and Kwame Brown, ESPN.com reported on Tuesday. Jackson returns to the Warriors after averaging 10.5 points and 3.2 rebounds this season. Ellis has been dynamic this campaign, averaging 19.6 points and 4.4 assists. Udoh provides a presence on the boards and Brown - who is a former No. 1 overall pick - is averaging 6.3 points and 6.4 rebounds in nine games this season. Milwaukee is set as a 6.5-point favorite at home to Cleveland Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Warriors were set as 1-point underdogs against Boston early Tuesday evening but shifted to 1-point favorites later.

President Barack Obama filled out his NCAA Tournament bracket for the fourth consecutive year on Tuesday. Obama penned Kentucky, Ohio State, Missouri and North Carolina into his Final Four - with the men's national championship selection to be revealed on ESPN's "SportsCenter" at 9 a.m. Wednesday. The President was successful with his pick of the Tar Heels in 2009, but has tabbed Kansas in each of the subsequent years. The Jayhawks made early exits both times.

Buffalo Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers was handed a three-game suspension on Tuesday for his hit on Montreal Canadiens center Scott Gomez. Myers, who netted the winning goal in Buffalo's 3-2 overtime victory on Monday, was assessed a boarding minor on the play in the third period. The 22-year-old Myers has eight goals and 13 assists in 50 games for the Sabres this season.

The Chicago Bears have reunited quarterback Jay Cutler with his favorite target. The Bears acquired Pro Bowl wide receiver Brandon Marshall from the Miami Dolphins for their 2012 and 2013 third-round picks, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Tuesday. Cutler and Marshall proved to be quite a tandem in Denver years ago - and Chicago was outwardly coveting a No. 1 wideout. Marshall made the Pro Bowl for the third time last season after reeling in 81 receptions for 1,214 yards and six touchdowns. He would later go on to be the Pro Bowl's MVP.

      Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Miami traded WR Brandon Marshall to Chicago for couple of picks in the 3rd round, reuniting Marshall with his old QB in Denver, Jay Cutler.

-- Free agent WR Vincent Jackson signed a big contract with the Bucs.

-- Warriors traded Monta Ellis to Milwaukee for Andrew Bogut, with a few other bodies thrown in there for cap purposes

-- Had to resort to my DirecTV laminated card to find out what channel TruTV is, but thats where the play-in games were shown Tuesday. It is 246 on DirecTV; it used to be channel 50 back when I had cable.

-- So CBS has Charles Barkley/Kenny Smith/Greg Anthony in studio; why is Seth Davis there? What does he add? Too many voices.

-- SMU is going to the Big East pretty soon; Fran Fraschilla already lives in Dallas-- he'd be an interesting hire for the Mustangs.

      ******************

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud..........

      13) Kansas State is favored by 5.5 points over Southern Miss, the biggest pointspread in an 8-9 game since Auburn was 6-point favorite over San Diego way back in 1987.

      12) Over last three NCAA tournaments, ACC teams have been underdog in 7 of 17 first round games; from 2003-08, ACC teams were favored in all 30 of their first round games.

      11) Why are all the ACC teams playing Friday? Doesn’t matter, but its just seems a little odd. By the way, BYU had to play in the Tuesday play-in game because they can't play in Friday/Sunday bracket because they're not allowed to play games on Sundays.

      10) Butler is interested in replacing Temple in the Atlantic 14, now that the Owls are off to the Big East. That would be a big blow to the Horizon League, but the Bulldogs should be careful.

20 years ago, LaSalle dominated the MAAC, with future NBA players Lionel Simmons and Randy Woods; they yearned for a bigger pond, and moved up to the A-14, but they’ve seldom been seen since. Sometimes its more fun to be the big fish in a smaller pond, especially in March.

      9) South Dakota State is one of the few D-I teams that doesn’t have a coach with D-I playing experience; their head coach played D-II and only one of the three assistants played college hoop, and he played D-III. Just goes to show you that playing/coaching are two different things.

      8) Anyone know why the Indians/Reds train in Arizona? Seems like Florida would be more convenient for the Ohio teams.

      7) Charlotte’s 73-71 win at New Orleans Monday night was least amount of points a winning NBA team has scored since 2008.

      6) Reggie Bush has earned $43,219,860 in his NFL career. Think about that for a second. Pretty staggering number.

      5) Finally had a Five Guys hamburger; golf guru Hank Haney has been pumping up Five Guys on Twitter for months, and they just put one in the **** near my house, so I tried it the other day-- they are indeed very good.

      4) So the Knicks are 4-13 in last 17 games that Carmelo Anthony played more than 6 minutes; they won seven of the last eight games he didn’t play, but when a scapegoat is identified for the Knicks’ current skid, its going to be the coach, who was just fine when the team played better defense and the ball moved better on offense, in other words, when Anthony was hurt.

Firing D’Antoni would be both stupid and typical of how the Knicks do business. Trading Anthony, even at a loss, would represent a bold and smarter way of going about their business.

      3) Oft-injured Nick Johnson has resurfaced with the Orioles, where he could be a big help as a DH, if they can keep him healthy.

      2) Randy Moss a 49er? Excellent. As a Ram fan, always like your rivals to add as many cancerous individuals as humanly possible. A passing combo of Alex Smith to Moss is not going to end well for them.

      1) South Carolina and SMU fired their basketball coaches Tuesday, as schools not basking in the glow of March Madness try to find the coach who can lead their team there. Gamecocks are in same division with Calipari/Donovan, so it’s a really hard job—even Vanderbilt is good in basketball, and SEC people aren’t exactly known for being patient.

Wichita State’s Gregg Marshall is said to be Carolina’s #1 choice. SMU is headed for the Big East for football reasons; they’re in Dallas where there are a lot of players- they should do better than they’ve been doing.

            Armadillo's Write-Up

            Wednesday, March 14

            Wednesday's Play-in NCAA games
Lamar-Vermont both have coaches in first year at their school; Lamar is one of most experienced teams in country- they were #3 Southland seed, Vermont was #2 in its league, and won true road game to get automatic bid. Southland teams are 2-9 in tournament last nine years, with UTSA winning play-in game LY, its only previous appearance in game. This is first play-in game for America East, which is 1-9 in NCAAs over last nine years, with lone win Vermont's win over Syracuse in '06. Cardinals have five seniors in their rotation; four of top six Vermont players are freshman/sophs. Lamar plays the #121 pace, Vermont #282.

Pac-12 gets killed in media, but since 2007, their teams are 17-7 in first round games (10-2 last three years); Cal Bears won last 16 games when they allowed less than 70 points- they've lost three of last four games, a red flag. South Florida plays great defense, hideous offense; they're very relieved to be here, after being one of last teams announced Sunday nite. Bulls scored less than 60 points in last seven games, splitting their last six. USF turns ball over 22.9% of time, shoot 31% from arc, play #342 pace, so they play ugly games. Three of Cal's top five guys are freshmen or sophs. Three of USF's top six guys are seniors.

            Other three tournaments
Short notes on the games in the other tournaments, where motivation is a great x-factor.

Manhattan @ Albany-- MAAC road teams are 4-8 vs spread when line is 3 or less points. Albany split pair with MAAC teams this year, with win over Rider by 9, losing at Siena by 4.

Yale @ Fairfield-- Yale lost its last three road games, by 15-7-21 points. MAAC home favorites are 5-8 against the spread.

Bowling Green @ Oakland-- MAC road underdogs of 6 or less points are 7-10 against spread. Oakland is 0-2 vs MAC teams this year, losing by by 2 to Ohio, by 15 to Western Michigan.

Minnesota @ LaSalle-- Atlantic 14 home favorites of less than 6 points are 11-6 vs spread. Big Dozen road underdogs of 6 or less are 7-3.

Central Florida @ Drexel-- Dragons are one team that feels they should be in NCAAs; CAA home favorites of 7 or less points are 7-8. UCF lost its last four road games, by 4-9-29-31 points.

Northern Iowa @ St Joe's-- MVC road underdogs of 7 or less points are 13-10. A-14 home favorites of 7 or less points are 14-7 vs spread.

Bucknell @ Arizona-- Bucknell lost final of its conference tournament on their home court. Arizona lost finals of Pac-12 tourney by a basket. Pac-12 teams were 4-0 vs spread in games played last night.

Nevada @ Oral Roberts-- ORU had won 20 of last 21 games before they got upset in semis of Summit League tourney. WAC road underdogs of 7 or less points are 9-6 vs spread.

Illinois State @ Ole Miss-- Redbirds lost in MVC finals, after upetting Wichita State in semis. SEC single digit home favorites are 9-8 vs spread.

Wofford @ Pitt-- SoCon road underdogs of 10-21 points are 12-19 vs spread this season. Panthers had their worst season in over a decade-- they went 6-15 in their last 21 games.

Quinnipiac @ Penn-- Quakers lost on last day of Ivy League season; it kept them from having playoff game with Harvard. Quinnipiac is #1 offensive rebounding team in country- they beat Yale by 6, in only game against an Ivy League team this season.

Delaware @ Butler-- CAA single digit road underdogs are 9-19 against the spread. Have to question Butler's will to be here after playing for a national title in each of the last two seasons.

North Dakota State @ Wyoming-- MWC home favorites of 7+ points are 17-10 against the spread. Bison lost nine of their last 13 games.

Western Illinois @ Oregon State-- Leathernecks lost Summit League final in OT; they play tough defense, while Oregon State wants to run. Pac 12 double digit home favorites are 17-21 against the spread.

North Dakota @ Drake-- Bulldogs went 5-8 in their last 13 games; they shoot only 64.7% from foul line. MVC double digit home favorites are 7-7 vs spread.

Rice @ UL-Lafayette-- Underdogs are 13-6 in C-USA road games when spread is 3 or less points. Ragin' Cajuns beat Central Florida 61-60 in their only game against a C-USA team this season.

UCSB @ Idaho-- Gauchos lost Big West final late Saturday night, now have long road trip up to Idaho, where its probably little colder than Santa Barbara. WAC home teams are 6-10 vs spread if number is 5 or less points.

CS-Bakersfield @ Utah State-- WAC double digit home favorites out of conference are 8-0 against the spread. Bakersfield is 0-5 vs WAC teams this seasonl with three of the five losses by 13+ points.

Fullerton @ LMU-- Titans handed Long Beach its only conference loss, then got upset by UC-Irvine in first round of Big West tourney, just as LMU did in WCC tournament, losing to San Francisco. Fullerton makes 40.4% behind arc; they've won eight of their last ten games.

            Thursday's NCAA games
Murray State is 30-1, winning its last seven games since its only loss, to Tennessee State; Racers are 4-0 vs top 100 teams, winning at Memphis for its best win of year. Colorado State is lowest-rated MWC team in NCAAs since last time they made tourney, in 2003. Colorado State has four guards starting, so Murray will have chance to exploit them inside. Over last three years, dogs are 10-2 vs spread in 6-11 games. Teams have a common opponent; Rams lost to Southern Miss by 21; Murray beat USM in double OT. Both teams make over 40% behind the arc. Having game in Louisville makes this a Murray State home game.

Since 2006, Conference USA teams other than Memphis are 0-4 in this tournament; Southern Miss faded down stretch, going 3-4 in last seven games; overall, three of their last eight games went OT. Kansas State is favored by 5.5 over USM, biggest spread in 8-9 game since '87; K-State won last three first round games, by 13-20-5 points. Big X favorites are just 5-9 vs spread in first round last three years; since '03, Big X single digit first round favorites are 11-7 vs spread. USM makes only 43.3% of its 2-point shots. Over last four years, underdogs are 12-4 vs spread in 8-9 games. K-State was just 6-6 in its last twelve games.

Since 2003, teams from Southern Conference are 10-2 vs spread in this event, despite '08 Davidson being only team to win during that stretch. Louisville forces turnovers on 23.4% of possessions; Davidson protects ball well, ranking #22 in country in ball security. Over last four years, underdogs are 10-6 vs spread in 4-13 games. Last five years, team that won Big East tournament is 4-1 vs spread in its first NCAA tournament game, but Louisville is 1-5 against spread in first round last six seasons, losing to Cal/Morehead State last two years. Cardinals won four games in NYC last week after going 2-4 in last six regular season games.

Montana won its last 14 games to get here, but Big Sky teams lost their last five tournament games, with four of five losses by 18+ points; Griz only played three top 100 teams this season, losing to Colorado State by 6, Oregon State by 25, beating Long Beach by 2. Wisconsin won its last five first round games, by 13-15-2-4-14 points; they're 7-2 vs spread in last nine first round games, 5-2 when favored. Neither teams subs much but Badgers play 2nd-slowest paced games in country, so that shouldn't be factor. Only NCAA games Big Sky teams covered in last nine years were against fellow western teams, Washington/Nevada.

BYU was down 25 in first half to Iona Tuesday, won by 6, third year in row they've won tournament game, and greatest comeback in tournament history. Marquette is 2-4 vs spread in last six first round games, winning by 8-1-11 points. WCC teams are now 10-5 SU in first round/play-in games, despite being underdog in 11 of the 15 games- they're 6-5 as first round underdog. Favorites are 13-7 vs spread in 3-14 games the last five years. Since 2007, Big East teams that are 1-4 seeds are 13-8 vs spread in first round games. Very tough spot for NYU here, playing afternoon game here, after winning emotional game that ended 38 hours earlier.

Syracuse's title hopes took big blow when Fab Melo was declared out on Tuesday; Orange scored 16 ppg less in three games he missed earlier in season. #1 seeds are 8-4 vs spread in first round games last three years. Since 2004, Big East double digit favorites are 12-7 vs spread in the first round. Orange are 5-2 vs spread in last seven first round games, covering last three. NC-Asheville lost to NC State by 9, North Carolina by 16, UConn by 10, Tennessee by 4- they played #18 non-conference slate in country. Big South teams lost last three games in this round by 31-43-23 points after Winthrop pulled an upset back in 2007.

Long Beach State has junior/four seniors in starting five, their #2 scorer Anderson is expected back here after missing Big West tournament with sprained knee; 49ers lost by 4 at San Diego State in only game against a MWC team. Big West teams are 0-6 in NCAAs last six years, with all six losses by 11+ points (2-4 vs spread). New Mexico won five in row, 12 of last 14 games; they're younger and deeper than Lobos, holding foes to 30.9% behind the arc. 49ers are 18-2 in last 20 games, with losses by combined total of 5 points- they're 0-5 vs top 50 teams, with best win over #59 Xavier. Dogs are 10-6 vs spread in 5-12 games last four years.

In last four seasons, Vanderbilt has been upset in first round three times, as a 4-4-5 seed, a record of ineptitude unequalled in this tournament, so ton of pressure on veteran Vandy squad that had emotional win Sunday over Kentucky (won first SEC title since 1951). Commodores have five seniors in top five players; they make 38.9% behind arc, do Harvard will not be able to just doubleteam Azili. Since 2008, SEC first round faves are 4-9 against spread. Harvard beat LMU/Florida State in pre-season, but they struggled to win Ivy title- they don't shoot or make ton of 3's. Ivy League teams are 1-8 in this round since '03, 3-6 vs spread.

Young Western Kentucky squad (five freshmen in rotation) has won its last eight games, after rallying back from down 16 with 4:57 in play-in game Tuesday, biggest comeback in last 5:00 of any tournament game in NCAA history. That said, Hilltoppers will get crushed if they play like that against Kentucky squad that blocks 21.3% of its opponents' shots, and allows foes to make only 38.8% of 2-point shots. Wildcats figure to be focused after losing SEC title game, their first loss since Dec 10. Sun Belt teams are 7-4 vs spread as an NCAA underdog the last nine years. Kentucky is 3-4 vs spread in its last seven first round games.

VCU went to Wichita and beat Shockers 68-67 in Bracket Buster game LY, game that propelled Rams to unlikely NCAA bid/spot in Final Four, while Wichita wound up winning NIT. Underdogs are 8-4 vs spread in 5-12 games last three years; CAA teams are 15-5-1 vs spread in last 21 games as an NCAA underdog. VCU lost four starters from LY but their new group leads country, forcing turnovers on 27.4% of possessions. Wichita has two juniors, five seniors in its rotation- they're 9-1 in last 10 games, losing by point in Valley semifinals. Shockers protect ball well. Since 2005, MVC favorites are 4-1 vs spread in this round.

West Virginia will have home crowd on its side in Pittsburgh, but they'll need much better offense to advance; they've really struggled to score at end of games late in season, but they have won first round game in five of last six tournaments. Gonzaga is a young team, with one senior in its top six players; they're 7-2 in first round games last nine years, 5-4 vs spread as tournament underdog. Since 2005, Big East teams seeded 8th or lower are just 2-6 SU. Gonzaga won eight of its last ten games, with two losses by total of five points- they play lot of tough non-conference games, so doubtful they'll be intimidated by Big East opponent.

South Dakota State has four guys who make 40%+ from arc, but its best player shoots only 24.4%-- he is terrific passer who gets inside defense and creates shots for teammates; Jackrabbits won by 19 at Washington in December, so if Baylor doesn't defend arc well, this could get dicey. Summit League isn't bad ball, but their teams are 0-9 in NCAAs the last nine years, covering spread two of last three years. Last three years, Big X double digit favorites are 3-5 vs spread in this round. Baylor is 10-7 in its last 17 games after starting season 17-0; they block lot of shots but are average defending the arc, which is where Jackrabbits can hurt them.

Iowa State has NBA player in White, who shoots 53% from floor, only 49% from line; Cyclones are in tourney for first time since 2005- they beat Providence of Big East by 10 in December, part of a poor schedule they played to build confidence with team of transfers for league play, and it worked, with ISU going surprisingly good 12-7. UConn is 8-12 in last 20 games, but won three of four with Calhoun back on bench- they defend basket well but don't defend the arc so well. Christopherson is a senior guard who could do damage here. Since '05, Big East teams seeded 8th or lower are just 2-6 SU.

Indiana lost PG Jones for season last week; Hoosiers are in tournament for first time since '08- they're 13-0 out of conference, winning by hoop at NC State, beating Kentucky at home. Last four years, underdogs are 9-7 vs spread in 4-13 games, but since 2007, single digit dogs are 5-10 vs spread in this round, double digit dogs 4-1. New Mexico State uses only seven guys, but five are juniors/seniors. Aggies get to foul line more than anyone in country and are #4 team on offensive boards- they hold foes to 32% behind arc, which is important against Indiana team that shoots 43.3% behind arc, second-best in country.

Loyola Md is carrying banner for MAAC after Iona's epic collapse on Tuesday; since 2005, MAAC underdogs are 3-7 vs spread in first round games. Greyhounds have only one senior in their rotation, lost by 24 at Kentucky in their only game vs top 50 opponent. Over last seven years, underdogs are 16-12 vs spread in 2-15 games. Ohio State is just 6-4 in its last ten games, but all four losses were against top 25 teams- they're 9-6 vs spread this season when laying double digits. Since 2003, Big Dozen double digit first round favorites are 4-6 against the spread. Ohio State lost to Siena of MAAC in '09, last first round win for MAAC.

Colorado won four games in four days to get here; UNLV flattened out late in year, losing last four road games, going 5-5 in last 10 games, with last win away from home on January 28. Underdogs are 10-2 vs spread in 6-11 games last three years. Rebels beat Cal by 17, USC by 11 in its two games vs Pac-12 foes. Buffaloes are 1-2 vs MWC opponents, with win over Air Force, losses to Colorado State/Wyoming. UNLV has four seniors in its top eight players; their expectations got raised little bit too high after they upset North Carolina in December. Pac-12 teams are 10-2 in first round/play-in games the last three tournaments.

NCAA preview & pick: Vermont vs. Lamar
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vermont Catamounts vs. Lamar Cardinals (-3, 129)

                THE STORY
: Pat Knight never reached the NCAA tournament while coaching at Texas Tech but the son of legendary Bobby Knight led the Cardinals into the Big Dance with a rout of McNeese State over the weekend. The younger Knight ripped his team’s seniors a couple of weeks ago and then watched them roll through the Southland Conference Tournament to earn a spot in the NCAA for the first time since 2000. There they’ll play America East perennial power Vermont (which shocked Syracuse as the 13-seed in 2005 for its only NCAA tournament victory) in a battle of 16-seeds in a first-round game at Dayton, Ohio on Wednesday. The Catamounts have reached the NCAA tournament five times. The winner plays No. 1 seed North Carolina on Friday.

TV: 6:40 p.m. ET, truTV. LINE: Lamar -3

ABOUT LAMAR (23-11): The Cardinals won their conference championship as the third seed but may have caught a break as their opponent in the final, McNeese State, knocked off the No. 1 seed Texas-Arlington. Still, Lamar avenged a 12-point regular-season loss to win the finale in convincing fashion getting 26 points from Mike James. Knight drew national headlines when he said his seniors were “stealing money by being on scholarship.” After they won the Southland title his critics called it brilliant motivation for the high-scoring Cardinals who average nearly 74 points per game.

ABOUT VERMONT (23-11): The Catamounts needed two overtimes to survive a semifinal round in the America East tournament against lowly Hartford which started the season at 0-13. First-year coach John Becker then preached defense in its conference title game matchup with Stony Brook and the Catamounts responded with a 51-43 victory despite scoring just five points in the final 10 minutes of the game. Becker’s squad displayed a ton of poise becoming just the fourth team in the tourney’s history to win the championship on the road and it did so in front of a raucous sold-out crowd of over 4,200. Vermont’s last NCAA appearance was in 2010 and all of its bids have been since 2003. They’ve won 14 of their last 15 games overall.

                TRENDS:

                - Lamar is 5-1 against the spread in its last six.
                - The over is 10-2 in Vermont's last 12 non-conference games.
                - Vermont is 2-5 against the spread in its last seven as an underdog.

                PICK: Lamar

NCAA preview & pick: South Florida vs. California
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

South Florida Bulls vs. California Golden Bears (-3, 115)

                  THE STORY
: A pair of teams squarely on the bubble heading into Selection Sunday will meet in a first-round contest Wednesday night at Dayton, Ohio. California was the lone at-large selection from the Pac-12 Conference and now hopes to run the ball against defensive-minded South Florida in a matchup of contrasting styles. The Bulls apparently punched their ticket to the dance with a solid two-game run in the Big East tournament and will be making their first appearance in the NCAA tourney since 1992. The winner of the battle of 12-seeds advances to Nashville to face No. 5 Temple on Friday.

TV: 9:10 p.m. ET, truTV. LINE: California -3

ABOUT CALIFORNIA (24-9): Cal’s loss to eventual Pac-12 tournament champion Colorado made for some anxious moments for the Bears which were viewed as the conference’s top team throughout the regular season but faded down the stretch. Cal finished second to Washington (which did not get an NCAA bid) in the regular season at 13-5 and is led by Pac-12 Player of the Year Jorge Gutierrez, a fearless competitor who admitted he succumbed to pressure late in the year. Cal isn’t deep but its starting five is formidable. The Bears have reached the NCAA three of the past four years and need a strong game from sharp-shooter Allen Crabbe who buried 81 3-pointers this season. The Bears, however, limp into the tourney losers of three of their last four games.

ABOUT SOUTH FLORIDA (20-13): The Bulls finished 12-6 in the Big East to earn a first-round bye in the conference tourney and then posted a much-needed win over Villanova in their first game at MSG. South Florida nearly reached the final falling to Notre Dame in overtime in the semifinals after it blew a lead late in the game. South Florida averages just 59 ppg (Cal scores 71.7) and USF doesn’t have a single player averaging in double figures. The Bulls are 0-2 all-time in NCAA play. South Florida has won seven of its last 10 games but was 1-6 against teams who were ranked in the top 25 at the time of those meetings.

                  TRENDS:

                  - The under is 9-1 in California's last 10 neutral-site games.
                  - South Florida is 7-3 against the spread in its last 10.
                  - The under is 22-6 in South Florida's last 28.

                  PICK: Bulls

College funds: Wednesday's best NIT bets
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Valparaiso Crusaders at Miami Hurricanes (-11, 135)

Miami reached the NIT quarterfinals a year ago before losing 79-64 to Alabama. The Hurricanes must shake off the disappointment of being left out of the NCAA field to go further this time around.

That will be tougher if leading scorer Durand Scott, declared ineligible Friday for receiving impermissible benefits, is not reinstated by the NCAA. Miami has wins over Florida State and Duke.

The Hurricanes probably needed one more victory to get an NCAA at-large bid, but they have the tools to make a long NIT run. Scott, if he returns, simply gives a balanced lineup another threat. Rion Brown, starting in Scott’s place against Florida State in the ACC quarterfinals, had 13 points and has averaged 10.4 over the last five games. Kenny Kadji, a 6-foot-11 forward, is second in scoring (12.3) and shoots 42.4 percent from 3-point range. The Hurricanes will need more from burly center Reggie Johnson, who is averaging just 7.0 points over the last eight games.

Horizon League regular-season champion Valparaiso, making its 11th postseason appearance in 17 years, is an efficient offensive team. The Crusaders are shooting 55.2 percent from inside the 3-point arc.

                    Pick: Over

Bucknell Bison at Arizona Wildcats (-8.5, 132)

Arizona saw its NCAA tournament hopes disappear when it fell to Colorado in the Pac-12 championship game. Now, the top-seeded Wildcats will have to regroup for their first-round NIT matchup with No. 8 seed Bucknell. Arizona is making its first NIT appearance since 1951.

The Bison were also a win shy of the NCAA tournament, but they suffered an 82-77 setback against Lehigh in the Patriot League final. The Wildcats are 0-3 all-time in the tournament and this will be the teams' first meeting.

After winning the Pac-10 title and advancing to the NCAA tournament’s Elite Eight last season, Arizona experienced a bit of a dropoff this season. The Wildcats finished fourth in the Pac-12, two games behind first-place Washington. A sluggish start, which included four non-conference losses, ultimately hurt the Wildcats, as did an ugly 87-80 loss at Arizona State in the regular-season finale.

Kyle Fogg averages a team-high 13.7 points for Arizona, which is 14-3 at home. Solomon Hill adds 12.9 points and a team-high seven rebounds per game.

                    Pick: Wildcats

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
68 things bettors should know about the field of 68
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Before you blindly pencil in Kentucky to win the national championship, remember these two things:

                      1. The Wildcats, the No. 1 overall seed and clear-cut favorite to win the NCAA tournament, have the worst record against the spread (12-20-1) of any team in the field of 68.

                      2. Since 1998, only two teams have won the national championship with a losing record against the spread: 2009 North Carolina (17-19 ATS) and 2004 UConn (16-18-1 ATS).

It’s easy to see why John Calipari’s young, but extremely talented bunch struggled to live up to the betting market’s expectations. The Wildcats were favored by a total of 532.5 points this year, an average of 16.3 points per game. No other team was favored by more than North Carolina’s 482 points. Kentucky was favored by 20 or more points nine times.

But the gap between the Wildcats and the rest of the field has narrowed, at least in oddsmakers’ eyes. The Las Vegas Hotel & Casino moved Kentucky from +180 (9/5) to +200 (2/1) after Big Blue slipped up against Vanderbilt in the SEC championship game. The Cats’ odds are even a little higher offshore.

Now, that we’ve scientifically proven without a doubt that Kentucky is not winning the national title, here’s everything else bettors should know to successfully handicap the madness.

                      Most NBA Talent

                      3. Kentucky: Anthony Davis (1) Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (2), Terrence Jones (11), Doron Lamb (35), Marcus Teague (38), Darius Miller (88).

                      4. North Carolina: Harrison Barnes (6), John Henson (9), Tyler Zeller (10), Kendall Marshall (19), James McAdoo (26), Reggie Bullock (65).

                      5. Kansas: Thomas Robinson (3), Tyshawn Taylor (31), Jeff Withey (94), Elijah Johnson (76)

                      6. Vanderbilt: Jeff Taylor (20), Festus Ezeli (34), John Jenkins (46)

                      7. UConn: Andre Drummond (4), Jeremy Lamb (12), Alex Oriakhi (91)

                      Best, Worst, Most & Least

                      8. Xavier has been the best bet in the NCAA tournament, going 10-3-1 ATS since 2005.

                      9. Gonzaga has been the worst best in the NCAA tournament, going 4-8 ATS since 2005.

                      10. New Mexico (22-8 ATS) has been the best bet in college basketball. No team has covered the spread in more than 24 games in a season since at least 1998.

                      11. Kentucky, as noted above, has the worst record against the spread of any team in the field. Duke, at 13-20 against the number, is next.

                      12. Lehigh is best free-throw shooting team at 77.6 percent.

                      13. Cincinnati is the worst free-throw shooting team at 64.1 percent.

                      14. North Carolina is by far the best rebounding team, dominating teams on the glass by average of 10.8 rebounds per game. No other team in the field has a rebounding margin more than 8.7 (New Mexico State).

                      15. Virginia Commonwealth is the worst rebounding team. The Rams were outrebounded by 1.5 per game.

                      16. Mississippi Valley State commits the most fouls per game at 20.5. Davidson is a close second, committing 20.3 fouls per game.

                      17. Notre Dame commits the fewest fouls per game at 13.8.

                      18. Florida makes the most 3-pointers per game (9.9)

                      19. Alabama makes the fewest 3-pointers per game (4.0).

                      20. Kentucky has the highest scoring margin, beating opponents by an average of 19.2 points. North Carolina (16.1), Ohio State (16.1), Wichita State (15.3) and Syracuse (14.7) are next.

                      21. Western Kentucky has the worst scoring margin (-2.9).

                      22. Western Kentucky received the least amount of respect from oddsmakers. The Hilltoppers were an underdog by a total of 135 points this season, the most of any team in the field.

                      23. Florida produced the highest percentage of overs. Eighteen of 28 games (64.28%) involving the Gators eclipsed the total. Duke was next at 20/12, over/under (62.5%).

                      24. Gonzaga produced the highest percentage of unders. Twenty-one of 29 games (72.4%) involving the Zags stayed under the total. Notre Dame was next at 9/18 over/under (66.6%).

                      25. Iona averages the most points 83.3.

                      26. South Florida scores the least at 59.2.

                      27. Wisconsin allows the fewest points (52.9)

                      28. Iona allows the most points (72.6).

                      29. Purdue turns the ball over the least (8.7).

                      30. Florida State turns the ball over the most (16.3).

                      31. Memphis and Xavier have each produced 10 overs in NCAA tournament play over the last six years, the most of any team in the field.

                      32. Duke has produced the most unders in NCAA tournament play over the last six years, the most of any team in the field.

                      6 Notable Strength-of-Schedule Mismatches

                      33. South Dakota State (218) vs. Baylor (16)

                      34. Cincinnati (63) vs. Texas (11)

                      35. Gonzaga (137) vs. West Virginia (25)

                      36. Davidson (210) vs. Louisville (18)

                      37. Murray State (249) vs. Colorado State (62)

                      38. Saint Mary’s (168) vs. Purdue (14)

5 teams not at full strength

                      39. Duke: The Blue Devils might be without starting forward and third-leading scorer Ryan Kelly (foot) for at least their opening game against Lehigh.

                      40. Long Beach State: The 49ers managed to win their conference tournament without second-leading scorer Larry Anderson (knee). Anderson is questionable to play Thursday against New Mexico.

                      41. North Carolina: The Tar Heels played without Jon Henson (wrist) for most of the ACC tournament. It seems likely that Roy Williams would rest his team’s leading rebounder and third-leading scorer for at least their opener against the Lamar-Vermont winner.

                      42. Indiana: The Hoosiers lost point guard Verdell Jones to an ACL injury in the Big Ten tournament.

                      43. Virginia: A rash of injuries has left the Cavs with just seven scholarship players. Starting shooting guard Joe Harris, one of the seven, has been battling a bad wrist for the latter half of the season.

                      Odds & Ends

                      44. Will a No. 1 seed win the NCAA tournament? Yes -123 / No +105 (PinnacleSports.com)

                      45. Instead of taking just Kentucky to win the tournament at 2/1, you might as well take the entire SEC at the same odds at Sportsbetting.ag.

                      46. Florida State is 33-19-1 ATS in March under coach Leonard Hamilton.

                      47. Underdogs went 1787-1733-73 ATS through the conference tournaments.

                      48. There were 1,769 overs and 1,788 unders through the conference tournaments.

                      49. Mississippi Valley State (2) and Long Beach State (3) had the toughest non-conference strength of schedules, according Kenpon.com.

                      50. Cincinnati had the easiest non-conference schedule (338).

                      51. Belmont and Montana enter the tournament on the longest winning streaks at 14.

                      52. No team is hotter than Memphis, though. The Tigers roared through the final stretch of their schedule, winning seven straight games by double figures.

                      53. The biggest snub of the NCAA tournament field – Play-by-play man Gus Johnson will not be calling any games this season. Johnson and CBS parted ways last year.

                      54. As of Tuesday, Baylor -7.5 (77%) was the top consensus pick among Covers users for second-round games.

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Columbus Blue Jackets at Edmonton Oilers (-155, 5.5)

While the majority of the NHL teams are entertaining postseason aspirations, the Columbus Blue Jackets have been mathematically eliminated and the Edmonton Oilers are feverishly crunching the numbers toward that conclusion as well.

Perhaps Edmonton coach Tom Renney can see the writing on the wall, which could explain why he publicly blasted his charges following their latest setback. The teams with the two lowest point totals in the league will meet in Alberta on Wednesday.

Edmonton suffered its third straight loss and 13th in 17 outings on Monday, prompting the usually reserved Renney to rant.

"It doesn't take many for the wrong approach, the wrong attitude, the wrong give a (expletive) to make its way through your dressing room," Renney said after the team's 3-2 setback to the San Jose Sharks. "It doesn't take many guys at all."

Although Edmonton's offense has gone south, LW Taylor Hall is doing his best by scoring a goal in three consecutive games. Hall has collected seven points in four career contests versus the Blue Jackets, but has yet to face them this season.

Edmonton's offense will show up Wednesday.

                        Pick: Over

Colorado Avalanche at Buffalo Sabres (-150, 5)

A couple of months ago, rumors were swirling that Buffalo goaltender Ryan Miller might be traded out of town as the Sabres struggled near the bottom of the Eastern Conference.

Now they’re knocking on the playoff door.

“Two months ago, I would say it would’ve been very tough with our group,” defenseman Tyler Myers told reporters about his team’s playoff chances after netting the winning goal in overtime against Montreal. “But I think we’ve come a very long, long way … the way we responded was a big sign of life with our group.”

The Sabres' win over Montreal improved them to 9-2-1 in their last 12, but they will be without Myers for the next three games after he was suspended for a hit on Scott Gomez.

Still, with Miller slamming the door shut, the under is worth a shot in this matchup.

                        Pick: Under

Boston Celtics at Golden State Warriors (-1, 189)

Just when everybody was ready to write the aging Boston Celtics off into the sunset, they have crawled back to respectability.

Boston has won seven of its last nine and has covered the number in six of its last seven. The Celtics got 21 points and eight rebounds from Kevin Garnett en route to a 94-85 win over the L.A. Clippers as 5.5-point underdogs on Monday.

"It was a game of runs really. It started with our defense,” coach Doc Rivers told reporters. “We were angry last night because we lost the game (to the Lakers) because we didn't get any stops down the stretch. We talked about it, if we're going to be a defensive team, you've got to get stops down the stretch of the game—and we did that. And offensively, we just executed our stuff."

The Celtics have their work cut out for them Wednesday. Golden State is coming off a couple of nice wins over the Clippers and Mavericks while Boston has struggled on the road all year.

Still, it's hard to know how the Warriors will react after sending Monta Ellis, power forward Ekpe Udoh and Kwame Brown to the Bucks for Andrew Bogut and forward Stephen Jackson.

                              Pick: Celtics

Utah Jazz at Phoenix Suns (4.5, 198)

It’s been an interesting week for the Utah Jazz, but so far at least, they’ve handled everything like pros.

Raja Bell was back in the starting lineup Monday after being sent home from the team’s recent road trip for clashing with coach Tyrone Corbin and while he managed just one point in 27 minutes of work in a win over Detroit, it seems as though he and Corbin have turned the page.

"He’s been around this league long enough and he’s been through enough ups and downs and tough situations to know when the game’s on you play," Corbin told reporters.

Meanwhile, Al Jefferson went off for 33 points and 12 rebounds and drilled the first trey of his career at the final buzzer, just hours after learning his 82-year-old grandmother had died unexpectedly.

Utah has now played over in four of its last five while Phoenix just dropped 124 points in a loss to Minnesota.

                              Pick: Over
