Friday’s betting tips: Josh Smith wants out of ATL

    Who’s hot

NBA: The over is 8-0-1 in Boston’s last nine home games.

NBA: San Antonio is 13-4-1 against the spread in its last 18.

NCAAB: Arkansas is 9-3-1 against the number in its last 13 meetings with LSU.

NCAAB: The over is 17-4 in the last 21 meetings between Maryland and North Carolina.

NHL: Pittsburgh has won seven straight.

    Who’s not

NBA: New York is 1-11 against the spread in its last 12 meetings with Milwaukee.

NBA: Denver has covered just two of its last 11 home games.

NCAAB: Temple has covered just once over the last four.

NCAAB: Xavier is 0-5-1 against the spread in its last six.

NHL: The Winnipeg Jets are 0-5 in their last five games in Calgary.

    Key stat

14 – The Oklahoma City Thunder head into Friday’s home date against Cleveland having won 14 consecutive games on their home floor. The Thunder are 9-5 against the spread during the streak while shooting 49. 1 percent and averaging 105.4 points per game at home this year.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Jimmy Howard, Detroit Red Wings - Howard suffered a lower body injury Sunday and didn't play in Tuesday's loss to Chicago and isn't expected to play Friday against the Kings either. Look for Joey MacDonald, who has lost his last two starts, to get the call.

    Game of the day

Baylor Bears at Kansas Wildcats (-5.5, N/A)

    Notable quotable

"(There is) lack of concentration, overconfidence and a certain level of selfishness, in general. I'm not a person or a selfish player, but we have to move the ball more, and we have to look further the team game, because we have enough talent to use different players.” – Los Angeles Lakers big man Pau Gasol on a Spanish radio station about the Lakers’ selfish play after they blew a 21-points lead against the Washington Wizards on Wednesday. Interesting note: Kobe Bryant hit just nine of his 31 attempts in the loss. The Lakers opened as 1-point underdogs at Minnesota.

    Notes and tips

Los Angeles Clippers star forward Blake Griffin suffered a mild sprained left ankle and a sore left knee during the fourth quarter of Wednesday's game against the New Jersey Nets. Griffin and Nets forward Kris Humphries were chasing a loose ball as the former went down hard on the court. "I had a rebound and I guess he wanted to dive after it and took my legs out, rolled my ankle and rolled my knee. The knee is good, but the ankle might be a little bit swollen." Griffin is averaging 21.4 points and 11.2 rebounds this season for the Clippers, and said he does expect to suit up Friday against San Antonio. The Clips are pegged as 5.5-point underdogs.

Atlanta Hawks All-Star Josh Smith has asked the team to trade him prior to the March 15 trade deadline, according to sources cited in an Atlanta Journal-Constitution report. Smith is said to be upset that the Hawks didn’t support him more to be selected to the All-Star game and doesn’t feel the Hawks are committed to winning a championship. Smoove is averaging 16.9 points, 9.9 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game. Atlanta visits Detroit Friday.

Peyton Manning doesn't intend to stay unemployed for long. The four-time NFL MVP plans to make a decision on where he'll play next season within the next week, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Thursday, citing sources. Schefter noted that while the former Indianapolis Colts quarterback would prefer to remain in the AFC, he is not excluding NFC clubs. After the 35-year-old Manning was released on Wednesday, 12 NFL teams have reportedly contacted his representatives. ESPN confirmed that AFC East clubs Miami and New York, AFC West teams Denver and Kansas City, NFC West clubs Arizona and Seattle have joined Washington are in the mix.

While golf's biggest names struggled in the windy conditions, Adam Scott shot a 6-under-par 66 Thursday to grab a share of the first-round lead in the Cadillac Championship at Doral, Fla. Scott had an eagle and six birdies in his round at the Blue Monster to join Jason Dufner atop the leaderboard on a day when only a dozen players managed to break 70. Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson were not among them, each shooting even-par 72, putting them one shot ahead of new world No. 1 Rory McIlroy. Woods, who closed with a blistering final-round 62 at last week's Honda Classic, opened his round with an eagle but gave the shots back with bogeys at Nos. 4 and 5.

      Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- You can bet the NFL would like Peyton Manning to choose his next stop before the 2012 schedule is released. Am guessing his first game in his new city is on Sunday Night Football.

-- Matt Lauer makes $25M a year to host the Today Show? Really? And we thought Vernon Wells is overpaid........

-- SEC football games averaged 75,832 fans LY, and that includes the games at Vanderbilt, where capacity is 39,773.

-- The Joe Pesci Snickers commercial is very good; if it makes me laugh when I'm having my worst day handicapping in ten years, its funny.

-- Wally Szczerbiak is way better doing analysis on games than he is in the CBS Sports Network studio. He's not afraid to offer opinions.

-- Orlando ended the Bulls' eight-game win streak; Dwight Howard had 29 points, 18 rebounds. Would be a shame the Magic traded him.

      *****************

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Wrapping up a basketball Thursday........

      13) Louisville scored 84 points despite shooting 37.7% from the floor in a 84-71 win over Marquette, which turned ball over 26 times. Cardinals had 23 offensive rebounds and nine blocked shots.

      12) Its tiring listening to ESPN announcers shilling for the Big East every game; when Central Florida/SMU/Houston are in the league next season, are they still going to tell us how great every team is? South Florida has a winning conference record, but they're a horrible offensive team. Letting Pitt/Syracuse get away will eventually be regarded as a huge mistake.

      11) Pac-12 tournament doesn't draw well in LA, so looks like its going to be at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas next season, which would make them the fourth league to play a conference tournament in Vegas.

      10) Referee Karl Hess is working the Big East tournament; refs at ACC tournament in Atlanta were wearing "KH" on their shoes Thursday, so it looks like Hess was banished to NYC as punishment for the kerfuffle at NC State a few weeks ago, when Hess tossed a couple Wolfpack alumni out of the arena for heckling him. Alumni who played in the NBA.

      9) Illinois didn't take any foul shots Thursday in a game they lost 64-61, game Illini led by 4 at the half. ESPN researchers said they're first team from a BCS league in at least fifteen years to play conference tournament game and not shoot a foul shot.

      8) Erratic Washington lost 86-84 to Oregon State, making 12-26 on foul line. Beavers were just 17-32. You wonder why our Olympic team can't win the gold medal much anymore? Our kids don't shoot the ball or pass the ball as well as kids from other countries. Simple as that. Its getting to be all dribble penetration, ball screens and pick 'n roll.

      7) Game of the Day was definitely in Memphis, where Marshall beat Tulsa 105-100 in triple OT, in a game where nine players fouled out and 101 free throws were taken. Tulsa took 58 foul shots and lost. Of course they missed 18 of them. Marshall plays Southern Miss Friday; the Eagles won in OT too, 81-78 over East Carolina.

      6) Cal-State Fullerton handed Long Beach State its first conference loss on Saturday, then went out and laid an egg on Thursday, losing to Cal-Irvine in the first round of the Big West tournament. That not good.

      5) Then there is Texas-Arlington, which went 17-1 in the Southland, but lost by 20 to McNeese State in the conference semifinals. McNeese now plays Pat Knight's Lamar Cardinals for the league championship, after Knight ripped his team publicly for being screw-ups off the court. .

      4) Arizona outscored UCLA 31-10 from the foul line in its 66-58 win at the Pac-12 tournament. Very few teams looked like they were having less fun than this year's Bruins. Have a nice summer.

      3) The noise you heard during the last few minutes of South Florida's win over Notre Dame was James Naismith turning over in his grave, after a series of dumb fouls, careless turnovers and hoisted-up bricks created a very chaotic ending. .

      2) Was totally surprised at how easily Colorado State trounced TCU; had thought that was going to be one of the better games of the day, but Rams hung an 81-60 beating on the Horned Frogs.

      1) Level of play was way better Thursday than Wednesday, unless you root for Northwestern, then level of play was same underachieving junk they've been giving for the last five decades. Duke wins, Vanderbilt wins, Stanford wins; they're all good schools, just like Northwestern- can't use the crutch that being a good academic school hurts the ballclub.

All Northwestern had to do was beat a Minnesota team that had lost six of last seven games, and didn't appear terribly interested in playing any more this season, but the Wildcats went and gagged away another game, another season. Time for a new coach, a different system; you're close to Chicago. Recruit an athletic point guard. I dare you.

Big 12 Tournament: Day 3 preview and picks
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Baylor Bears vs. Kansas Jayhawks (-5.5, N/A)

              THE STORY
: Baylor is the only team to knock off league power Kansas in the Big 12 tournament since 2005. The top-seeded Jayhawks will have to avoid the same fate to keep alive their hopes of a sixth tournament title in seven years at Kansas City. Kansas dominated two meetings during the regular season, winning by an average of 16 points. The Jayhawks have won 16 of their last 17 Big 12 tournament games, while Baylor has made the final only once, losing to Missouri in the 2009 championship.

              TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, Big 12 Network, ESPNU, ESPN3.com

              TRENDS:

              - Baylor is 11-24 against the spread in its last 35 Big 12 games.
              - The under is 8-1 in Kansas' last nine neutral-site games.
              - Kansas is 1-5-1 against the spread in its last seven following an ATS win.

              TIP-INS:

              1. Kansas forward Thomas Robinson, the Big 12 Player of the Year, had 19 points and 10 rebounds against the Aggies for his 23rd double-double of the season.

              2. Baylor is 22-1 when leading at the half.

ACC tournament: Day 2 preview and picks
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Maryland Terrapins vs. North Carolina Tar Heels (-15.5, N/A)

                THE STORY
: Conference Player of the Year Tyler Zeller (16.3 ppg, 9.3 rpg) leads the top-seeded Tar Heels into a quarterfinal matchup with No. 8 seed Maryland in the ACC tournament. If UNC can win its third ACC tournament in the Roy Williams era, the Tar Heels should secure a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. UNC will have a huge edge inside with Zeller, John Henson (14.2 ppg, 10.3 rpg) and Harrison Barnes (17.4 ppg, 5.1 rpg). The Tar Heels, ranked fourth in the national polls, won both meetings this season, 83-74 in College Park, Md., and 88-64 in Chapel Hill, N.C.

                TV: 12 p.m. ET, ESPN2, ACC Network

                TRENDS:

                - Maryland has covered in six of the last eight meetings between the two teams.
                - North Carolina is 6-1 against the spread in its last seven.
                - The over is 4-1 in Maryland's last five.

                TIP-INS:

                1. Stoglin’s 25 points vs. Wake Forest were the most by a Terp in an ACC tourney game since John Gilchrist scored 30 in Maryland’s 95-87 win over Duke in the 2004 title game.

                2. Terps coach Mark Turgeon is 9-11 in conference tourney games, including his days at Texas A&M and Wichita State.

                3. UNC sophomore PG Kendall Marshall, who had 10 assists in the regular-season finale against Duke, has reached double figures in assists a school-record 13 times this season.

                PICK: Tar Heels

NC State Wolfpack vs. Virginia Cavaliers (-2.5, N/A)

THE STORY: Short-handed Virginia tries to reach the ACC semifinals for the first time since 1995 when the fourth-seeded Cavs clash with the fifth-seeded Wolfpack. Virginia learned this week that freshman guard Malcolm Brogdon has a broken bone in his foot and is done for the season, leaving the team with seven scholarship players. Sophomore forward Akil Mitchell is the only Virginia starter who hasn’t played at least 35 minutes in each of the past two games. NC State advanced with a 78-57 win over Wake Forest on Thursday as Scott Wood buried five 3-pointers en route to 22 points. Virginia won the only meeting with NC State this season, 61-60 in Raleigh, N.C.

                TV: 2:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2, ACC Network.

                TRENDS:

                - The over is 19-7 in Virginia's last 26 overall.
                - The over is 6-1 in NC State's last seven.
                - Virginia has covered in six straight versus NC State.

                TIP-INS:

                1. The Cavaliers’ No. 4 seed is their highest since 2007 (No. 2).

                2. Virginia owns nine road or neutral-site wins, most since the team posted 10 in 1990-91.

                3. Leslie has scored in double figures in 25 of the 28 games he’s played. He had 11 points and 11 rebounds in Thursday’s win over Boston College.

                PICK: Wolfpack

SEC tournament: Day 2 preview and picks
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LSU Tigers at Kentucky Wildcats (-16.5, N/A)

                  THE STORY
: LSU tries its luck at derailing a No. 1-ranked Kentucky team that’s won 22 straight games. The Tigers barely put up a fight against the Wildcats the first time, as Kentucky rolled to a 74-50 win in Baton Rouge on Jan. 28. Kentucky has dominated the SEC tournament, winning the event 27 times – 21 times more than second-place Alabama.

                  TV: 1 p.m. ET, SEC Network, ESPN3.com

                  TRENDS:

                  - Four of LSU's last five have played over the total.
                  - LSU has covered in seven straight neutral-site games.
                  - Kentucky has covered in eight of its last 11 overall.

                  TIP-INS:

                  1. Kentucky is 14-2 against LSU in the conference tournament, including three wins in the title game.
                  2. LSU’s Malcolm White was ejected from the first game between the teams because of a flagrant foul.
                  3. Kentucky is 74-1 under coach John Calipari when holding an opponent to 67 or fewer points.

                  PICK: Wildcats

Mississippi Rebels vs. Tennessee Volunteers (N/A)

THE STORY: The last time the Rebels and Volunteers met, Tennessee won. Neither team has lost since that Feb. 22 matchup in Knoxville, and both teams need to keep winning to bolster their NCAA tournament hopes. The Volunteers hope to continue their amazing turnaround from a 0-4 start in conference play to the second seed and a first-round bye in the SEC tournament. Mississippi pulled away from Auburn in the tournament’s opening round Thursday, extending its winning streak to four games behind Nick Williams’ career-high 22 points.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, SEC Network

                  TRENDS:

                  - Mississippi is 11-5 against the spread in its last 16 games following an ATS win.
                  - Tennessee has covered the number in four straight.
                  - Under is 15-7-1 in Tennessee's last 23 overall.

                  TIP-INS:

                  1. The Rebels lost an early 13-point lead in a 73-60 loss at Tennessee last month. Tennessee’s Jeronne Maymon scored 18 points with 13 rebounds for the Volunteers, while Henry led the Rebels with 15 points.
                  2. A victory would give Mississippi 20 victories for the fifth time in the past six seasons.
                  3. Tennessee freshman Jarnell Stokes, who joined the Volunteers at midseason, won SEC Player of the Week honors last week after averaging 14.5 points and 10.5 rebounds.

                  PICK: N/A

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Winnipeg Jets at Calgary Flames (-130, 5)

You have to give the Calgary Flames some credit. Despite missing seven forwards due to injury, they were just two points out of a playoff spot ahead of Thursday’s action.

Captain Jarome Iginla put the team on his back Tuesday, scoring twice in a hard-fought 5-4 win over Montreal.

"We're going through a tough stretch, and sometimes when it goes like that, you just need that one to get over the hump,” Iginla told reporters. “It's not pretty but it's still an important win for us."

It’s probably going to get a lot uglier down the stretch. The Flames are 2-3-3 in their last eight, but are now relying on basically two forward lines to provide the offense, which has struggled all season to begin with.

The Flames do catch a bit of a break with Winnipeg playing the second half of a back-to-back, but the Jets need these points just as much as Calgary does.

We like the road team value here.

                    Pick: Jets

New York Rangers at Chicago Blackhawks (-120, 5)

The good news for the Chicago Blackhawks is they face the Eastern Conference’s best team as it plays on consecutive nights. The bad news is that means they’ll almost certainly see Henrik Lundqvist in the cage after he took Thursday night off.

The Blackhawks were just pushed around all over the ice in a 5-1 loss to the hard-working St. Louis Blues, a team that grinds teams out with depth and defense much like the Rangers do.

"They have a great home record," Chicago coach Joel Quenneville told reporters of the Blues. "They are playing well. Across the boards, game in, game out, this team is winning hockey games. They can win low-scoring affairs and they can win a lot of different ways. They have some depth to their team, and we (had) to be at our best."

The Blackhawks have been held to 20 or fewer shots in three of their last five games and it’s probably going to take a lot more than that to rattle Lundqvist.

Look to the under or play the road underdog here as well.

                    Pick: Rangers

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Portland Trail Blazers at Boston Celtics (-3, 184)

Raymond Felton knows the Blazers are shopping for a new point guard and he knows he’s the reason why. Felton, who enjoyed a career campaign last year, has been dreadful in his first season in Rip City.

He lost his job in the starting lineup last month but was reinserted Wednesday night against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Blazers lost but Felton was one of the lone bright spots, scoring 23 points and dishing out nine assists.

“I know I’m struggling, but it’s hard to perform the way you know how when you know they don’t have confidence in you,” Felton told reporters last month. “Never in my days playing have I felt like a coach wasn’t confident in my abilities. It’s hard to play knowing that.”

Not sure if Felton’s being back in the starting lineup had anything to do with head coach Nate McMillan having confidence in the former Tar Heel. It probably has more to do with McMillan realizing that Felton is a better option at point than Jamal Crawford. Lesser of two evils, kind of thing.

Boston point guard Rajon Rondo, who knows a thing or two about trade rumors himself, should eat up Felton on Friday.

                          Pick: Celtics -3

                          Utah Jazz at Philadelphia 76ers (-6.5, 185)

Evan Turner is an interesting topic these days in Philadelphia. The sports town took it easy on Turner for an up and down season because the Sixers were playing so well. But the fans turned their frustration at Turner after a recent 2-8 slump.

Philly columnist Stan Hochman defended Turner explaining only that Turner was dealing with something that would more than explain his inconsistent performance. Well, after the second-year player scored 26 points and grabbed nine rebounds against the Celtics on Wednesday, everyone was wondering if Turner can keep it up.

“I don’t worry,” Turner told the Philadelphia Inquirer. “You have some good nights and you have some bad nights. As a pro you understand that. Tonight was a good night.”

Expect Turner and the Sixers to have another good night against the Jazz.

                          Pick: 76ers -6.5
