Sunday's betting tips: Heat responds well to losses

    Who’s hot

NBA: The Heat is 5-0 ATS in its last five games following an ATS loss.

NBA: The Clippers are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 games following an ATS loss.

NHL: The road team is 10-4 in the last 14 Blackhawks-Red Wings meetings.

NHL: Ottawa is 21-6 in its last 27 games at Florida.

NCAAB: Purdue is 6-1 ATS in its last seven games.

NCAAB: Arizona is 8-0 ATS in its last eight games following an ATS loss.

    Who’s not

NBA: The 76ers are 1-7 ATS in their last eight games playing on one day’s rest.

NBA: The favorite is 2-12 ATS in the last 14 Denver-San Antonio meetings.

NHL: The Flames are 1-5 in their last six games.

NHL: Minnesota is 2-6 in its last eight home games.

NCAAB: Florida State is 2-6 ATS in its last eight conference games.

NCAAB: Stanford is 1-5 ATS in its last six meetings with California.

    Key stat

40 – That’s how many rebounds Arizona senior shooting guard Kyle Fogg has grabbed in the past four games. The Wildcats, who have gone 3-1 in that span, visit Arizona State on Sunday in a bitter rivalry. Fogg has scored at least 15 points in five of his last six games and is arguably playing the best ball of his career. “He’s really on a great run,” coach Sean Miller said.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

A virus kept Celtics guard Ray Allen out of Friday’s win over the Nets, but Allen is listed as probable for the Knicks’ visit on Sunday. Mickael Pietrus started for Allen and scored 11 points in 23 minutes. Allen is averaging 14.8 points and 2.7 assists and has hit 70 of 144 3-pointers.

    Games of the day

No. 1 Kentucky Wildcats at No. 13 Florida Gators (3, 141)

Miami Heat at Los Angeles Lakers (2.5, 193.5)

No. 11 Ohio State Buckeyes at No. 5 Michigan State Spartans (-2.5, 126)

    Notable quotable

"The initial step will be to heal from the surgery. Secondly, we will recondition his arm and body to where he was prior to the injury. Lastly, we will put A.J. through the same progression as he would have gone through here in spring training." – Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said on newly acquired pitcher A.J. Burnett, who will miss two to three months with a facial fracture. Pittsburgh had hoped Burnett would start on Opening Day.

    Notes and tips

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has told the Saints he will hold proceedings to determine punishment against the team and those involved with the “bounty program.” Goodell, who said he’d confer with the players’ union about appropriate discipline, could impose fines and suspensions and even force New Orleans to surrender draft picks. The team, meanwhile, placed the franchise tag on QB Drew Brees after the sides were unable to reach a long-term deal.

Michigan State needs someone besides power forward Draymond Green to step up against the Buckeyes. The Spartans’ senior leader has scored 49 points the past two games, but no other player reached double figures in either game. Count on Ohio State big man Jared Sullinger to play better than he did in the first meeting, when he was swarmed in the post and committed 10 turnovers.

UConn coach Jim Calhoun returned to the bench Saturday, less than a week after having back surgery, for the Huskies’ 74-65 win over Pittsburgh. He had missed eight games with spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spine. Calhoun will be on the bench for the Big East tournament. The defending national champs appear on track for an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.

      Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- Turns out the Mavericks didn't send Lamar Odom to the D-League, but they did get their point across. Interested to see how he plays from this point on. It doesn't take a lot to try hard.

-- Odom had 9 points in 18 minutes Saturday, as Mavericks beat Utah by 6 in a game where Odom was +6.

-- Mets 1B Ike Davis may have Valley Fever, a fungal infection that did lot to screw up Conor Jackson's career three years ago. Then again, with the Mets' doctors, Davis may have an ingrown toenail.

-- Nate Wolters on South Dakota State is averaging 20 ppg, five assists and six rebounds a game. He is only D-I kid in America doing that.

-- Siena scored an upset win in the MAAC tourney in Springfield, with an 84-82 OT win over Manhattan. Saints only used six guys-- they all played 35+ minutes. Not sure I've seen that before.

-- Substitute teacher/utility infielder Wes Timmons is 3-5 for the A's in the first two exhibition games. God I hope he makes the team.

      *****************

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday........

      13) Biggest upset Saturday seems to be Illinois State beating Wichita State 65-64 in the MVC tourney in St Louis; Redbirds were 12-point dog, in a game where neither team shot 35% from floor. Shockers led by 8 at half, have to be bitterly disappointed with this result.

      12) Utah and Oregon both play in Pac-12; halftime score in Eugene was Oregon 52-14. 52 to freakin' 14. Ducks wound up winning, 94-48. Long way to go in the Utes' rebuilding process.

      11) Former Utah coach Rick Majerus forgot to take his blood pressure medication and was hospitalized for a while in Pittsburgh; he missed his team's 75-60 win at Duquesne. Majerus' Saint Louis team is very good, not terribly athletic but they play well together.

      10) Tennessee State gave Murray State all they wanted, but the Racers pulled thru at the end and won the OVC title, 54-52. Tigers are going to give somebody some problems in the NIT- they're only team that beat Murray State all season.

      9) Long Beach State lost 77-74 at Cal State-Fullerton, 49ers' first loss in conference play this year; not sure if that will relax them or put even more pressure on them next weekend in Anaheim. Long Beach lost in Big West tourney last two years to UCSB; now Fullerton seems like the #1 threat.

      8) Iowa State beat Baylor 81-72 after being down 7 at half; Cyclones will be an interesting team to track on Selection Sunday. Fred Hoiberg molded a group of mostly transfers into a cohesive unit.

      7) Ben Howland has taken a lot of grief this season, and maybe lot of it is deserved, but UCLA was 7-2 vs spread this season as a home favorite in an arena that isn't their normal home. So Howland may lack people skills, but he can coach. He just needs his players to stay in school longer.

      6) Evansville split pair with Creighton during season, with loss by only a single point (93-92), but Bluejays pounded Evansville 99-71 in the semis Saturday, and will face Cinderella Illinois State in the MVC final Sunday. Creighton has an excellent offensive team.

      5) San Francisco coach Rex Walters got the cheesiest technical I've ever seen in a college game, when his team was down by a hoop; he didn't say anything to the ref, just clapped his hands and feigned trying to scramble back into the coaches' box. Ref didn't appreciate it and T'd him up, and it hurt the Dons. Sometimes officials get a little full of themselves.

      4) Is there a stranger team that Vanderbilt? They whack Florida on Senior Night, a very emotional game, then go to Tennessee and lose to the Vols. You just never know what you're getting with the Commodores.

      3) North Carolina jumped out 22-5 at Duke, and the Blue Devils never got closer than 11 points as the Tar Heels won the ACC regular season title with a shockingly-easy 88-70 win. PG Marshall was dominant for UNC, getting to the basket with his dribble over and over.

      2) Funny how different leagues have different quirks to their conference tournaments; WCC and Horizon give top two seeds byes to the semis; Summit League has #1/#2 seeds play their first round game a day earlier than the #3/#4 seeds to give them an edge in the semis. Lot of leagues have the tournament on the home court of the #1 seed. Championship Week is great fun; hope the powers-that-be never do away with it.

      1) Horizon Final Tuesday night is going to be Detroit at Valparaiso, in an extremely emotional game for Valpo, whose former coach Homer Drew is father of the current coach Bryce Drew-- Homer and his wife are fighting cancer at the same time. Homer's other son Scott coaches Baylor.

Training day: Four MLB teams that try in Spring Training

Just like dating the hot girl with deep-rooted emotional issues, betting on Spring Training baseball is something you know you shouldn’t do but just can’t help.

If you are to venture into the mystery world that is preseason MLB action, maybe stick to these clubs, who have shown a bit more fight during their tune-up schedule the past few seasons:

Kansas City Royals (20-10 in 2011)

The Royals have been a winning bet in spring baseball for the past four seasons, going 68-51 (.571) since 2008, including a 20-win Cactus League session last spring. Kansas City has long been a basement team in the American League Central, helping build a surplus of young talent. Those prospects have had a chance to shine during spring ball. The Royals are on the rise and another strong warmup round could be a precursor to a profitable 2012 for Kansas City.

        Colorado Rockies (20-11 in 2011)

The Rockies seem to be a bookend team – winning at the very start and very end of the baseball calendar. Colorado is 68-54 in spring training action over the past four years, including a 20-win campaign in 2011. Manager Jim Tracy is trying to weed out his pitching staff while also trying to find roles for new veterans like Marco Scutaro, Michael Cuddyer, Casey Blake, Jeremy Guthrie and Ramon Hernandez.

San Francisco Giants (23-12 in 2011)

After finishing at the bottom of the Cactus League standings with a 9-23 record in 2008, the Giants have been Spring Training royalty. San Francisco has posted back-to-back 23-12 spring sessions and went 21-19 in a very busy 2009 schedule. The Giants have always thrived in spring behind their developing pitching staff, but this season is different. Manager Bruce Bochy is watching the returns of catcher Buster Posey, second baseman Freddy Sanchez and closer Brian Wilson closely, hoping to get these guys some serious reps when they're ready.

        Minnesota Twins (20-12 in 2011)

The Twins have been Grapefruit League darlings over the past four seasons. Minnesota is a combined 70-54 (.564) during that span, putting up 20 wins last spring. The Twins are trying to put last season’s disaster behind them and get stars Justin Morneau and Joe Mauer back into the swing of things – literally. Manager Ron Gardenhire is also taking a long look at his bullpen after losing reliever Joel Zumaya for the season. Expect to see more of Minny's big-name talents before Opening Day.

Game of the day: Ohio State at Michigan State
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ohio State Buckeyes at Michigan State Spartans (-2.5, 126)

                THE STORY
: No. 11 Ohio State has a chance to grab a share of the Big Ten regular season title for a third consecutive year. The Buckeyes were held to 26 percent shooting in their first meeting with No. 5 Michigan State this season - a 58-48 setback on Feb. 11 that ended Ohio State's 39-game home winning streak. Saturday's game features a rematch of the league's top two frontcourt players in Ohio State sophomore Jared Sullinger and Michigan State senior Draymond Green. Sullinger committed a career-high 10 turnovers in the Feb. 11 clash.

                TV: 4 p.m. ET, CBS.

ABOUT OHIO STATE (24-6, 12-5 Big Ten, 14-11 ATS): Outside shooting has been the biggest weak spot for the Buckeyes this season. After leading the nation in 3-point percentage last season, Ohio State is ninth in the Big Ten this year at 33.2 percent. The team's inability to spread defenses has made life tougher for Sullinger, who leads the Buckeyes with 17 points and 9.3 rebounds per game but has been held in check by double-teams in many of Ohio State's losses. Despite their recent struggles, the Buckeyes still lead the Big Ten in scoring margin at plus 16.6 and rank among the national leaders in rebounding and defensive efficiency.

ABOUT MICHIGAN STATE (24-6, 13-4, 18-9 ATS): The Spartans have been extremely tough defensively, holding 11 straight opponents to 62 points or fewer before Tuesday's 70-55 setback at Indiana. Michigan State is second nationally in opponent field-goal percentage (37.5) and 12th in scoring defense (58.2). Green is the front-runner for Big Ten Player of the Year honors, ranking among the league's top 10 in scoring (16.1, 6th), rebounding (10.2, 1st), assists (3.6, 10th) and steals (1.5, 5th). He had 29 points in Tuesday's loss to Indiana, accounting for more than half of his team's total.

                TRENDS:

                * Buckeyes are 6-1 ATS in the last seven meetings in Michigan State.
                * Road team is 14-3 ATS in the last 17 meetings.
                * Underdog is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.

                TIP-INS:

                1. Michigan State leads the all-time series, 59-51 SU, and owns a 36-16 advantage in East Lansing.

                2. Following its win last month in Columbus, the Spartans have a slim 5-4 edge over the Buckeyes in games where both teams come into the game nationally ranked.

                3. Michigan State and Ohio State rank 1-2 in the Big Ten in rebounding margin at plus-9.2 and plus-7.6, respectively.

Beware of dog: Six teams with conference tournament upset potential
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last March belonged to the UConn Huskies.

After stumbling into the postseason, losing four of their final five games, the Huskies rolled to a 97-71 win over DePaul in the opening round of the Big East tournament and never looked back. Repeating Connecticut’s improbable march to the national title is a near-impossible feat. But all great Cinderella runs have to start somewhere.

These programs may not advance beyond their first postseason matchup, but they’re perfectly capable of throwing a wrench in their respective conference tournaments. Keep an eye out for these programs with dangerous upset potential:

                  Big Ten: Iowa Hawkeyes

The Hawkeyes are a forgotten team in the Big Ten, what with all the hoopla around Ohio State, the Michigan schools and the rebirth of Hoosiers basketball. But what a lot of college basketball bettors might not know is that Iowa is the most feared team in the league.

It’s collected two wins over Wisconsin, one against Indiana and one against Michigan. Guard Matt Gatens is a cold-blooded killer from beyond the arc and if he gets hot, there’s nothing you can do. The senior has averaged 24.6 points over his last five games.

                  ACC: Miami Hurricanes

The Canes’ season seemed like it was in the crapper when star big Reggie Johnson was declared ineligible last week. However, the school pushed to have him reinstated and the NCAA let him go with a slap on the wrist. Johnson is a huge part of Miami’s success – 6-foot-10 and 284 pounds of it. He leads the team in rebounding (7.0) and chips in more than 10 points per game.

The Hurricanes aren’t expected to get an at-large bid to the Big Dance, so that gives them added motivation during the ACC tournament. What really makes Miami a ticking upset bomb is the fact it has beaten some of the best in the conference, including Duke and Florida State. Miami's dismantling of B.C. on Saturday gives the Hurricanes a chance for a first-round bye in the ACC tourney.

                  Big 12: Kansas State Wildcats

Frank Martin already has his program primed for a spot among the lucky 68. But, if you think KSU’s mad man will be happy with that, you’ve never seen the rage in Martin’s eyes. The Wildcats are a live dog in the Big 12 tournament, and have been picking up major momentum heading into the postseason. They’ve won three of their last four, including victories over Baylor and Missouri.

Kansas State is spotty offensively, and can go ice cold from outside at times. But the Wildcats flexed their scoring muscle in a shootout with Texas A&M last week, draining 12 3-pointers against the best 3-point defense in the conference. Kansas State is still one of the better defensive programs in the country, and can keep any game close.

                  Big East: South Florida Bulls

The Bulls have won six of their last eight games despite Saturday's 50-44 loss to West Virginia, and have won a program-best 12 games in Big East play. South Florida may have punched its dance ticket with a 58-51 upset over Louisville on Wednesday as it proved it can hang with the conference's elite. The Bulls play lockdown defense, giving up just 57.4 points per game this season – eighth in the country.

Having earned a first-round bye in the Big East tournament, the Bulls should command the respect of college hoops bettors. South Florida has held eight straight opponents under 60 points.

                  Pac-12: Colorado Buffaloes

The Pac-12 is hot mess, like Lindsay Lohan or Brittany Spears. There are glimpses of past glory, but when you take a step back and breathe it all in, it stinks. That leaves room for a ton of upset potential during the Pac-12 tournament. Cal and Washington may be on top of the standings, but they’re far from sure things.

The Buffaloes, however, are the new kids on the block and have proved they belong in their new home. Their most recent victory came over the Golden Bears – by 13 points – and they’ve scored wins against Washington, Arizona and Oregon. The Buffs have terrific senior leadership that should help them bounce back from Saturday's 83-69 loss at Oregon State.

                  SEC: Tennessee Volunteers

The Vols could be seeded as high as No. 2 in the SEC tournament, which doesn’t make them a traditional Cinderella team. However, for a program that was left for dead after the Bruce Pearl scandal, Tennessee has been defying the odds all season. It has come to life in recent weeks, going 9-2 in its last 11 games and earning a first-round bye in the SEC tournament.

The Volunteers are still not guaranteed a spot in the NCAA, despite two wins over Florida and a tough non-conference schedule that included close losses to Duke, Memphis and Pitt. First-year head coach Cuonzo Martin should win Coach of the Year honors for even having this team in the conversation.

Clemson Tigers at Florida State Seminoles (-7.5, 123.5)

The Seminoles have locked up the No. 3-seed in the ACC Tournament and a first-round bye but are just 3-3 in their last six and are seeking momentum heading into the postseason.

The Tigers are winners of three straight and five of six, and still have a shot at the fourth and final bye in the conference tournament.

Clemson enters play on Sunday with the ACC’s second best scoring defense, allowing opponents 59.7 points per game. The Tigers also do a good job of applying pressure to opposing offenses, ranking first in the conference in turnover margin (+2.45) and trailing only Florida State in steals per game (7.5).

Individually, Andre Young (52) and Tanner Smith (50) are in the ACC’s top three in steals. Young paces the Clemson offense with 13.2 points per game.

FSU, which stormed back to beat Virginia in its last outing, wants to avenge the 79-59 loss to the Tigers that opened ACC play for both teams. Michael Snaer leads Florida State in scoring, averaging 13.8 points, while Ian Miller (10.8) and Bernard James (10.3) also post double-figure averages.

Clemson is 5-1 ATS in its last six road games.

                    Pick: Tigers

Michigan Wolverines at Penn State Nittany Lions (5.5, 121)

No. 16 Michigan can earn a share of the Big Ten regular-season title if it wins and Michigan State loses to Ohio State.

The Wolverines have won five of six as they gear up for a second straight NCAA tournament appearance. They’ve won three straight conference road games, including Thursday’s 72-61 win at Illinois.

Penn State, meanwhile, can avoid last place with a win. And the Nittany Lions are not pushovers at home, where they’ve notched 10 of their 12 wins.

Tim Frazier does it all for Penn State, averaging 18.8 points, 6.3 assists, 4.8 rebounds and 2.2 steals.

The home team is 10-3-1 ATS in the last 14 meetings.

                    Pick: Nittany Lions

NEW YORK KNICKS at BOSTON CELTICS (-2.5, 188)

                            THE STORY
: The New York Knicks finally showed they could beat the Boston Celtics in the season opener on Christmas Day. Now, with point guard Jeremy Lin and an upgraded supporting cast in tow, the Knicks will look to end a 12-game losing streak in Boston (postseason included) when they visit the Celtics on Sunday afternoon. The teams, which have split of pair of two-point decisions this season, currently hold the final two playoff slots in the Eastern Conference and are chasing Philadelphia in the Atlantic Division.

                            TV: 1 p.m. ET, ABC.

ABOUT THE KNICKS (18-18, 17-19 ATS): When New York lost at Boston on Feb. 3, Lin had two points in 6 1/2 minutes. One night later, he came off the bench to score 25 points and spark a seven-game win streak -- and the birth of Linsanity. The addition of J.R. Smith and return to health of Baron Davis has bolstered the Knicks' bench, which produced 50 points – including 17 from Steve Novak – in a comeback win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday night.

ABOUT THE CELTICS (18-17, 14-21 ATS): Boston's aging roster appears to have been invigorated by the All-Star break. The Celtics entered the break on a five-game losing streak but have come out of it by winning three straight, including a 107-94 demolition of New Jersey on Friday night. Point guard Rajon Rondo has been the subject of numerous trade rumors, but it hasn't affected his play. Rondo followed up a triple-double against Milwaukee with 14 points and 13 rebounds against the Nets.

                            TRENDS:

*Knicks are 6-1 ATS in their last seven games as underdogs.
*Celtics are 1-7 ATS in their last eight games overall.
*Road team is 6-0 ATS in the last six meetings.
*Over is 6-0-1 in Boston's last seven home games.

                            BUZZER BEATERS:

                            1. Celtics shooting guard Ray Allen is expected to play after missing Friday's game due to illness.

                            2. The Knicks are 10-3 since Lin burst onto the scene with his 25-point effort against New Jersey on Feb. 4.

                            3. Knicks star forward Carmelo Anthony has scored 63 points in two games against Boston this season.

MIAMI HEAT at LOS ANGELES LAKERS (2.5, 193.5)

                            THE STORY
: Some games in the NBA do not require hype, and a meeting between the Los Angeles Lakers and Miami Heat tops that list. Still, when Los Angeles hosts Miami on Sunday, there will be an extra buzz surrounding the high-profile matchup, powered by a juicy subplot that has LeBron James playing second fiddle. The teams are squaring off exactly one week after Heat guard Dwyane Wade smacked Kobe Bryant on a drive in the All-Star Game, leaving the Lakers superstar with a concussion, broken nose and whiplash. Los Angeles also is attempting to halt a four-game losing streak at the hands of Miami.

                            TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC.

ABOUT THE HEAT (28-8, 19-17 ATS): Perhaps looking ahead to Sunday, Miami had its nine-game win streak halted by Utah on Friday night. The Heat had won each game by at least 12 points in the streak. James has come out of the All-Star break with a vengeance, pouring in 73 points on 63 percent shooting and grabbing 21 rebounds in the two games. James is 3-0 against the Lakers as a member of the Heat and 10-2 in his last 12 meetings against them overall.

ABOUT THE LAKERS (22-14, 17-19 ATS): The injuries sustained in the All-Star Game have forced Bryant to wear a mask, but it hasn't had an adverse effect on his play. Bryant poured in 38 points in Friday's win over Sacramento and scored 31 in Wednesday's win over Minnesota. Bryant and his teammates played down the revenge factor against Wade. "We'll do what we need to do to get a win," guard Derek Fisher said. "That's always the sweetest revenge." Lakers C Andrew Bynum has recorded eight straight double-doubles.

                            TRENDS:

*Heat is 6-1 ATS in its last seven road games.
*Lakers are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games vs. Eastern Conference teams.
*Over is 6-1 in the Lakers' last seven games.
*Heat is 7-0 ATS in the last seven meetings.

                            BUZZER BEATERS:

                            1. Heat F Chris Bosh has missed two straight games due to the death of his grandmother. His status for Sunday's game is uncertain.

                            2. The Lakers have won seven straight at home and are 16-2 at the Staples Center -- the second-best home record in the league behind Oklahoma City.

                            3. Wade, who apologized to Bryant, is keyed up for Sunday's game. "Love it," Wade said. "My favorite matchup is to go against Kobe."

Los Angeles Clippers at Houston Rockets (-2, 196)

The Clippers play the third contest of a six-game road trip when they visit Houston. Los Angeles split the first two games of the excursion and lost to the Phoenix Suns on Friday.

The Rockets are 15-5 at home but one of the losses came Friday against the Denver Nuggets. The Rockets have lost two straight after winning four in a row.

Clippers All-Star forward Blake Griffin could rebound with a big night after two consecutive subpar performances. Griffin had his worst shooting game this season (6 of 19) in the loss to Phoenix while scoring just 17 points. Griffin has just 31 points over the last two games after scoring 20 or more in eight straight games. He has not scored under 20 points in three consecutive games all season. Griffin has grabbed less than 10 rebounds in three straight games for the second time this season.

At the same time, it's unlikely that Rockets guard Kevin Martin can duplicate his 35-point effort against the Nuggets in which he made 10 of 15 shots.

The Clippers routed the Rockets 117-89 on Jan. 4 in Los Angeles, and the Clips are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 games following a SU loss.

                              Pick: Clippers

Sacamento Kings at Phoenix Suns (-5.5, 204)

The Suns conclude a six-game homestand by trying to get over the .500 mark. Phoenix is 4-1 on the homestand and coming off an impressive win over the Clippers.

Sacramento has been brutal on the road, dropping to 4-18 with Friday’s loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. Overall, the Kings have lost eight of their last 10 games.

But rookie guard Jimmer Fredette scored 12 fourth-quarter points against the Lakers to reach double figures in back-to-back games for the first time since January. Fredette has connected on five 3-pointers in the last two games after making just five over his previous seven games.

Phoenix, meanwhile, is riding high after Grant Hill swatted away Chris Paul’s game-tying 3-point attempt in the final seconds of Friday's win. The Suns have held four teams below 80 points, matching last season’s total.

The home team is 13-6 ATS in the last 19 Kings-Suns meetings.

                              Pick: Suns
