Monday's betting tips: Devils on fire as underdogs

    Who’s hot

NCAAB: Baylor is 13-5 ATS in its last 18 games against losing teams.

NCAAB: The under is 10-0-2 in Kansas’ last 12 road games.

NHL: The Devils are 7-0 in their last seven games as underdogs.

NHL: The Jets are 11-4 in their last 15 games as favorites.

    Who’s not

NCAAB: Northern Arizona is 2-10-2 ATS in its last 14 games vs. Big Sky opponents.

NCAAB: Georgetown is 2-8 ATS in their last 10 Monday games.

NHL: The Kings are 3-8 in their last 11 games as an underdog of +110 to +150.

NHL: Colorado is 6-20 in its last 26 games against Anaheim.

    Key stat

48.3 -- That’s Kansas’ shooting percentage, which ranks second in the Big 12. The Jayhawks on Monday visit Oklahoma State, which ranks last in the conference at 41.9 percent. The Cowboys also are last in 3-point shooting at 32.2 percent.

    Injury not to be overlooked

Avalanche winger Milan Hejduk is questionable for Monday’s game against the Ducks after missing Saturday’s game against the Red Wings with a groin injury. He has 13 goals and 20 assists this season.

    Game of the day

Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Georgetown Hoyas (-6.5, 118.5)

    Notable quotable

"If it does go to free agency, the first place I'm coming is here. If I owe anything, it's that. My loyalty is here. This is where I've been. This is where my family's been, so obviously I'd love to stay here more than anywhere else. So first of all, they get a chance to do what they need to do to keep me here." -- Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton, whose contract expires after this season.

    Notes and tips

Heavy showers postponed the Daytona 500 until noon Monday, but radar shows more storm cells moving toward the high-banked track, creating the possibility of a shortened race. This was the first time in the event's 54-year history that it was delayed a day. Check out our betting preview.

The Blues looked weary Saturday, playing their third game in four days, and they still have four more games on a road trip that continues Monday in Calgary. Coach Ken Hitchcock gave the team off Sunday. "This is just the start of tough travel for us," he said. "Any points we get on the road are really gratifying, and nobody is going to worry. We all know we've got to play better, but we'll play better if we just get some rest. I think we're going to play our best road game in Calgary because it's going to be almost like a full day and a half off." The Blues have won back-to-back shootouts in Winnipeg and Nashville.

LeBron James is an increasingly heavy favorite to capture the NBA’s MVP award. Pinnacle isn’t even offering odds on individuals besides LBJ. James is listed at -190 to win the award, with the field pegged at +167.

Miami Hurricanes center Reggie Johnson (10.5 ppg, 6.9 rpg) has been declared ineligible after an internal investigation revealed members of his family took impermissible travel benefits that the university said came from a member of former coach Frank Haith's staff. Miami has asked the NCAA for a quick decision on whether Johnson can be reinstated. The Hurricanes play at North Carolina State on Wednesday.

      Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Robert Allenby choked away the PGA tournament in Mexico Sunday, but its not like he needs the money. Here is what Allenby has earned over the last 11 years, just in this country, despite not winning any tournaments during that time..........keep in mind he's won 18 tourneys overseas, on addition to the four he's won in this country.

      Year Earnings/Rank

      2002 $2,115,771-20
      2003 $2,176,452-24
      2004 $1,513,537-44
      2005 $1,184,458-63
      2006 $1,503,581-56
      2007 $2,219,538-27
      2008 $3,606,700-11
      2009 $1,890,946-42
      2010 $2,974,997-18
      2011 $1,452,567-60
      2012 $488,746-30

      ***************

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports sunday..........

      13) If the PGA Tour makes a highlight film of the first two months of this season, they better title it "Choking Dogs" because thats what players in the lead have done on Sundays all this month. Sunday was Robert Allenby who gagged away a winner's paycheck, double-bogeying 18 when he had a two-stroke lead. Allenby had earned over $26M in his career, but he hasn't won a tournament on the PGA Tour in 11 years.

      12) Allenby did an interview on Golf Channel before the playoff, which is unusual, then he signed autographs. How about hitting balls on the range? He seems like a great guy, but if you had him in a pool Sunday, chances are you'd like to smack him in the head right about now.

      11) Robert Griffin III ran 4.41 40-yard dash at the Combine, Andrew Luck ran a 4.66, Kellen Moore ran a 4.94, none of which means a hill of beans when it comes to being an NFL quarterback. Anyone remember what a guy named Tom Brady ran in his 40-yard dash at the Combine? Try 5.23.

      10) Craig Robinson is now 55-62 in four years at Oregon State, as Beavers have now lost five games in a row in another late-season swoon. If you're the AD at Oregon State, are you happy with Robinson, and if you're not, how do you go about firing the President's brother-in-law?

I mean, the Pac-12 stinks this year, and in a year Oregon State was hyped to be improved, they're 5-11 in league play. Thats not progress.

      9) If you like the Red Sox, there's a lot of good spring training coverage on the NESN channel, with a two-hour show live on Sunday mornings. Think they have a show on at 6pm weeknights.

      8) Speaking of Boston, any Red Sox fan who has one ill word to say about Terry Francona is an ungrateful nitwit who chooses to forget what a joke the team was before Francona took over and won two world titles.

Bobby Valentine will micro-manage and ban chicken in the clubhouse and let everyone know how smart he is, but he ain't won anything, except one NL title with the Mets; Francona owns two World Series rings.

      7) NBA All-Star Game was 88-69 at the half, which means I didn't miss a damn thing by not watching. Just once, some billionaire should put up a huge sum of money and say winner takes all, and see how hard these guys play. Its insulting that they don't even try to play defense until the fourth quarter. Baseball is still the sport best-suited for All-Star play- its an individual sport.

      6) Speaking of the NBA, how do they hold a 3-point shooting contest and not have Steve Novak in it? Kyle Korver? Steve Nash? How do they have a dunking contest without JaVale McGee?

      5) I say this a lot, but its true; a 64-man 1-on-1 tournament over All-Star weekend would be very big. Two guys from each team, other four guys chosen from Internet vote. Who wouldn't watch this?

      4) The 1949 Motor City Open had an 11-hole playoff, the longest playoff in PGA Tour history; Sunday's playoff at Mayakoba tied for 2nd all-time longest playoff, at eight holes.

      3) If you like wagering on politics, Democrats are -$220 in the Presidential election in November; Republicans are +$200.

      2) Greedy bastard update: At corner of Fuller/Central near my house, the price at the cruddy Mobil station is $3.95 a gallon; less than a mile away, at another cruddy Mobil station on corner of Wolf/Sand Creek, it is $4.05. Can't wait to see what the price goes to when the weather gets good.

      1) Conference tournaments start this week; there are three in Las Vegas, one in Atlantic City, one in Hot Springs, AR, which apparently means it is fun to visit Hot Springs. Never been to Arkansas myself.

Game of the day: Notre Dame at Georgetown
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Georgetown Hoyas (-6.5, 118.5)

              THE STORY
: A pair of nationally ranked teams square off for a possible two-round bye in the Big East tournament. Notre Dame visits Georgetown in a showdown between teams trying to attain one of the top four seeds in the league; Notre Dame is currently in third place, one game ahead of the Hoyas. Notre Dame had its nine-game Big East win streak broken on Saturday, while Georgetown bounced back for a win after a previously sketchy showing against Seton Hall. This will be the final home game for Georgetown.

              TV: 7 p.m. ET. ESPN.

ABOUT NOTRE DAME (20-9, 12-4 Big East): The Irish will try to get well offensively against a team noted for its shutdown defense. Notre Dame made only 4 of 31 3-pointers, a season-low 12.9 percent, in Saturday’s upset loss to St. John’s. Jack Cooley (12.4 ppg) has five double-doubles in his last six games and a team-leading 11 this season. Scott Martin (9.4 ppg) has scored in double figures in two straight games, and his 18 points against St. John’s were a season-high against conference opposition. Jerian Grant and Eric Atkins both average 12.7 points. Tom Knight had a career-high six rebounds against the Johnnies.

ABOUT GEORGETOWN (21-6, 11-5 Big East): Otto Porter (8.8 ppg) showed no lingering effects after catching an elbow in the mouth in the first minute of the Villanova game. Porter came back to score 15 points and six rebounds in his second career start. He started ahead of Markel Starks, who did not play, although coach John Thompson gave no reason for the lineup change. Although this team is built on defense, it boasts a balanced offensive attack: Jason Clark (14.5 ppg), Hollis Thompson (13.1 ppg) and Porter all are shooting 50 percent from the field.

              TRENDS:

Irish are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 Big East games.
Hoyas are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games following a SU win.
Underdog is 11-5-1 ATS in the last 17 meetings.
Under is 13-5 in Notre Dame's last 18 games.

              TIP-INS:

              1. The Irish had only seven turnovers vs. St. John’s, the 13th time this season they’ve had fewer than 10.

              2. Notre Dame is 9-1 when starting the lineup of Eric Atkins, Pat Connaughton, Jack Cooley, Jerian Grant and Scott Martin.

              3. Georgetown has made 158 3-pointers, while Notre Dame has made 194.

Kansas Jayhawks at Oklahoma State Cowboys (10, 137)

The Jayhawks are on letdown alert after overcoming a 19-point, second-half deficit to beat Missouri in overtime on Saturday.

But a win in Stillwater would give Kansas the outright Big 12 regular-season title and the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament. So the Jayhawks, who beat OSU 81-66 in Lawrence this season, should be motivated.

They’ll be led by forward Thomas Robinson, who's recorded a double-double in seven of the last 10 games.

The Cowboys, coming off a 60-42 win over Texas A&M, have won two straight and three of their last four at home against the Jayhawks. This will be the final home game for senior guard Keiton Page, who averages a team-high 16.2 points. He has 278 career 3-pointers, one shy of the school record.

The Cowboys are 38-16-3 ATS in their last 57 home games.

                Pick: Cowboys

Texas Tech Red Raiders at Baylor Bears (-20.5, 127)

It will be an emotional night at the Ferrell Center, as Baylor honors the winningest senior class in school history. Seniors Quincy Acy, Fred Ellis and Anthony Jones will be recognized before the Bears host last-place Texas Tech.

The Bears have righted themselves after a two-game skid, winning three of four. They knocked off Oklahoma 70-60 on Saturday as Pierre Jackson and Brady Heslip each nailed four 3-pointers.

Four Bears are averaging at least 12 points.

The Red Raiders gave an admirable effort Saturday against Texas, losing 71-67. But they averaged a pitiful 47.3 points in the three previous games, all losses.

Baylor is 7-3-1 ATS the last 11 times it has hosted Texas Tech. The Bears also are 9-1 ATS in their last 10 games against teams with a winning percentage below .400.

                Pick: Bears

Pucking the trends: This week's best NHL bets
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week, we update you on who's hot, who's not and situational betting spots in the National Hockey League.

                        HOT TEAM: Vancouver Canucks

Vancouver coach Alain Vigneault put it best Friday night, saying his team “had nothing left in the tank. But two points is two points.” And that’s exactly how the Canucks are where they are now. They are not worrying about the road ahead. They are not worrying their past troubles. They are truly living for the moment, and it’s working.

A 2-1 win over the Devils on Friday in New Jersey was the Canucks’ second in less than 24 hours -- they stopped Detroit’s home win streak the night before -- and it was their ninth win of the month.

Henrik Sedin had 66 points, his brother Daniel had 63, and Vancouver had three players behind them in the 40s: Ryan Kesler (42), Alexandre Burrows (41) and Alexander Edler (40). As long as that keeps up, a return trip to the Stanley Cup Finals might be in order.

                        COLD TEAM: Toronto Maple Leafs

Terrible timing for Toronto’s worst stretch of the season. The Maple Leafs are now on the outside looking in with regards to the Eastern Conference playoff race, they suddenly have no answers in goal, and with the trade deadline looming, they’re not sure where they truly stand.

Saturday’s 4-2 home loss to Washington, a team equally swimming in its own struggles, was Toronto’s fourth straight, and along the way, the Maple Leafs heard it from the Air Canada Centre crowd. Goaltender James Reimer, who made 32 saves, took the loss, his second in three nights. His partner, Jonas Gustavsson, hasn't been much better. He took the 4-3 loss to the Devils on Tuesday.

It’s clear there’s enough talent on this team to make the playoffs. In reality, there may not even be the right type of player on the trade market to help them change things. The best answer might just be coach Ron Wilson rallying the troops with one of his speeches. But time is running short.

                        OVER PLAY: Philadelphia Flyers

There are problems in net and on defense, and motivation has been lagging ever since captain Chris Pronger's injuries cost him the season, but the Flyers, through it all, remain one of the best over plays in the league. In fact, any internal issues this team is grappling with shouldn't be of concern for over players, because if you've ridden the Flyers, you've been padding your wallets, and that's all that matters.

Saturday's 5-4 shootout win over the Flames in Calgary was the second over in three tries on Philadelphia's trip through Western Canada. Seven of the last eight Philadelphia games have gone over, and eight of the last 10.

The numbers are startling on offense for this team. Honestly, did anyone foresee Scott Hartnell scoring 30 goals? Well, when you play up-and-down hockey on a nightly basis, and you are forever trying to outscore your goaltending's weaknesses, that's what you get. So, keep this club on your over radar. After all, headed into Tuesday's game at San Jose, the Flyers already had 37 of them.

                        UNDER PLAY: Phoenix Coyotes

A sure sign of a good under team is one that can get right back up on the horse, and maintain its solid, defensive ways. And the Coyotes fell in line with that on Saturday night. After two uncharacteristic overs last week, Phoenix stemmed the tide, stifled the Oilers from start to finish, and walked away with a 3-1 win.

Goaltender Mike Smith made 21 saves en route to his 10th consecutive victory, and really, amid all the problems going on in Phoenix off the ice -- will they move, won't they move, etc. -- things really seem to be meshing in the locker room.

Saturday's under was the 30th of the season for Phoenix, and was the eighth in the last 10 games. The amazing part of that run is on the back line. In seven of those eight unders, the Coyotes allowed one goal or less.

                        SURVEYING THE SCHEDULE:

** Back-to-back stretches can truly challenge teams at this time of year, and perhaps we’ll see what the Devils are made of after they tackle two of them this week. On Monday, they finish one back-to-back stretch, by meeting the Rangers in New York a day after they hosted the Lightning in a matinee. And then on Thursday and Friday, they’ll play at Boston and Washington, respectively. Won’t be easy.

** San Jose began a four-games-in-seven days stretch on Sunday against the Wild in Minnesota, so expect some lagging legs. The final three, all at home, are against playoff potentials from both conferences: Philadelphia, Buffalo and St. Louis.

New Jersey Devils at New York Rangers (-165, 5)

The Rangers are just 2-2-1 in their last five games, and had to go past regulation to get those victories.

New York is at its best with Henrik Lundqvist in goal. The Rangers have dropped three of backup Martin Biron’s last four starts.

New Jersey is one of only two teams that has beaten Lundqvist this month.

The Devils have taken two of the first three meetings with the Rangers this season, winning a 4-3 shootout on Jan. 31 and posting a 1-0 victory at Madison Square Garden on Feb. 7 as Martin Brodeur outdueled Lundqvist.

Lundqvist is 23-10-5 with a .937 save percentage in 38 career games against New Jersey. But these Devils have won their last seven games when pegged as underdogs.

                          Pick: Devils

Edmonton Oilers at Winnipeg Jets (-160, 5.5)

Winnipeg has equaled its franchise record by going six games without a loss in regulation, moving into eighth place in the Eastern Conference and within two points of the Southeast Division lead. But every team in the East, except Ottawa, has games in hand on the Jets. They must keep winning with three contests left on an eight-game homestand.

Edmonton has won two of its last three and faces Winnipeg for the only time this season.

Rookie standout Ryan Nugent-Hopkins returned to the lineup Saturday against Phoenix and scored his first goal since Dec. 7.

Winnipeg’s Blake Wheeler, defenseman Dustin Byfuglien and Evander Kane are each in the middle of six-game point streaks, helping the Jets gain at least a point in every contest.

Backup goaltender Chris Mason played Saturday, so Ondrej Pavelec is expected back in net Monday. Pavelec has allowed seven even-strength goals in his last four starts.

                          Pick: Jets
