Sunday’s betting tips: Illinois enduring epic slump

    Who’s hot

NCAAB: Oregon is 6-0 ATS in its last six overall and 6-0 ATS in its last six road games.

NCAAB: South Florida is 5-0 ATS in its last five overall and 8-2 ATS in its last 10 at home.

NHL: The Ducks are 8-2 in their last 10 home games and the under is 5-1 in their last six home games.

NHL: The Senators are 4-0 in their last four overall and 5-1 in their last six overall.

    Who’s not

NCAAB: Illinois is 0-6 ATS in its last six overall and 0-6 ATS in its last six against the Big Ten.

NCAAB: Colorado is 1-4 ATS in its last five overall and the over is 0-4 in its last four overall.

NHL: The Blue Jackets are 3-13 in their last 16 against the Eastern Conference.

NHL: The Sharks are 1-4 in their last five overall and 1-4 in their last five road games.

    Key stat

1 – Indiana's rank in the Big Ten in scoring offense (77.9 points per game), field-goal percentage (.492), and three-point shooting (.424). The Hoosiers will be hoping to display their offensive prowess again on Sunday as they look to avenge a 77-74 home loss to Minnesota on January 12. Indiana shot 43.6 percent from the floor in that contest but made only four of 18 three-point attempts. For the Hoosiers, freshman Cody Zeller has scored at least 15 points in 10 of his last 12 games.

    Injuries that shouldn’t be overlooked

The Chicago Blackhawks will be without forward Jonathan Toews and defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson during their weekend road trip (they are at Anaheim on Sunday). Toews, who was uninjured in a minor car wreck on Thursday, has been dealing with an unrelated upper-body injury. Hjalmarsson played in Wednesday's 3-1 loss to Dallas but had missed the previous seven games with a concussion-related injury. Toews leads the team this season with 29 goals and he is second in points with 57. Hjalmarsson has one goal and 11 assists.

    Biggest games on the slate

NBA All-Star Game: West vs. East (-3, 283.5)

Wisconsin Badgers at Ohio State Buckeyes (-9.5, 118.5)

    Notable quotable

"Florida State, they're as good as anybody we've played. Every year, they're just so sound. And this year, they've got just a little bit more magic." – Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski after his team won on the road at Florida State on Thursday. The Seminoles are looking to bounce back at Miami on Sunday.

    Tips and notes

Mark Wilson is going off as a +120 underdog against Hunter Mahan (-140) in the semifinals of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship on Sunday morning. Wilson is the shortest hitter left in the field, but he has been getting he job done by hitting greens and fairways while playing mistake-free golf. "Hunter has made a ton of birdies this week," said Wilson, who has not even been extended past the 16th hole this week. "I've got to focus on hitting the green and making that par. I'm not going to change anything about the way I'm playing." Meanwhile, the No. 1 world ranking could eventually go to the winner of the other semifinal between Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood.

The Columbus Blue Jackets are the worst team in the NHL--by far--with a mere 43 points heading into Sunday's game at Pittsburgh. There really is no sign of a turnaround, either, because they have lost three of their last four and are coming off a 5-0 shutout loss to Colorado on Friday. Right wing Jared Boll (broken foot) and defenseman Aaron Johnson (lower body) are both questionable for Columbus.

Oregon State won at Oregon 76-71 on January 29, but the trends do not favor the Beavers heading into the season's second installment of the Civil War. They have dropped four games in a row and are 0-4 ATS in that span. The Ducks are decent 4-2 in their last six overall and they are 6-0 ATS in that span. Oregon State is coming off a blowout loss at California while Oregon most recently won at Stanford 68-64. Oregon will look to dominate the boards like it did last time (40 to 29) while cutting down on its turnovers (23 against the Beavers).

      Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- Guess they don't do Match Play tournaments in Asian golf; rookie Sang Moon-Bae had never played in one before this week. He seems to like it well enough, made a lot of cash this week.

-- Lee Westwood has played in 35 World Golf Tour events, and in 55 majors, and is 0-90. He has a chance to change that Sunday.

-- This tournament is the one event that is more interesting the first day, with 32 matches, than it is the last day, with two. Go figure.

-- 3rd place match Sunday night is played to fill TV time; difference in prize money is $110,000; think the players ever agree beforehand to split the $110,000 and just play for fun?

-- At what point do TV networks start treating Eldrick Woods like just another guy (as a golfer), which he pretty much is right now?

-- Very seldom is prize money talked about on PGA Tour telecasts, its always Fed Ex points and another statistics used, but golf is one sport where $$$ won is a concise accurate description of how your year was.

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday..........

      13) I've seen Fresno State play twice this year; they lost in double OT at San Jose State couple weeks ago, then lost 79-76 in triple OT to Nevada last night. Guess I shouldn't watch them anymore.

      12) Washington Huskies won sloppy game 55-51 at Washington State, in a game where host Coogs were 2-18 from arc, 17-32 from foul line. Hard to beat a decent team when you shoot that badly. Its discouraging.

      11) Kansas was down 19 in second half, rallied to beat a thin but really good Missouri team 87-86. Too bad these teams won't play anymore, just because the Tigers are bolting for the SEC.

      10) 12 of Virginia Tech's 14 ACC games were decided by 5 or less points, with Hokies 4-8 in those games. Overall, Tech has lost nine games by 5 or less points this season.

      9) San Diego State's Jamaal Franklin is a really good player, but wonder why he wears a long sleeve shirt under his jersey? Never saw that before.

      8) If St John's is going to get back into the top half of the Big East in the next few years, they better keep Moe Harkless in school; there have been rumors about Harkless thinking he is NBA-ready. Ummm....not yet.

      7) Fordham had a ridiculous 23 offensive rebounds in its upset of LaSalle; have to miss a lot of shots to grab 23 offensive boards. Chris Gaston had 35 points and 16 rebounds in a winning cause for Fordham.

      6) There were 21 blocked shots in the Providence-DePaul game; 10 by the Friars, 11 by DePaul. Can't remember ever having seen a box score for a college game that had both teams with double digit blocked shots.

      5) Some very strange outcomes Saturday: Florida loses by 14 at Georgia? Middle Tennessee loses at Western Kentucky? St John's upsets Notre Dame? UC-Davis beats Cal-State Fullerton? Very upsetting day, and I didn't even mention Utah beating Stanford in Salt Lake City. .

      4) There were four Pac-12 games Saturday; none of them was decided by more than four points.

      3) Mountain West is deeper than we think; after beating San Diego State and UNLV last week, New Mexico was patting itself on the back; this week, they lost at Colorado State/TCU. Can't get all fat and happy and expect to win one of these leagues. Got to stay hungry.

      2) You don't see North Carolina shoot 33.3% from the floor too often, but they did Saturday and lived to tell about it, escaping Virginia with a 54-51 win, in a game they trailed by 4 at the half. Hard-fought game.

      1) Little things win big games. Foul shooting, for one.
Virginia Tech lost in OT at Duke- they were 7-16 on the line.
Washington State lost by 4, was 17-32 on the line.
Duquesne lost by 5, was 9-17 on the charity stripe.
NC State lost in OT; they were 5-13 on the foul line.
Tulane lost by 4, and they were 13-23 on the line.
I could go on, but its late and I'm tired. You get the point.

NBA All-Star Game: What bettors need to know

        Western Conference All-Stars at Eastern Conference All-Stars (-3.5, 283.5)

        THE STORY
: There are several new faces sprinkled among the rosters for the NBA All-Star Game. The starting lineups, however, are mostly stacked with returning superstars.

Four-time All-Star Game MVP Kobe Bryant is making his 13th trip to the festivities in Orlando Sunday, where he will match up against Miami Heat teammates Dwyane Wade and LeBron James, who have combined for three All-Star MVPs.

Bryant carried the Western Conference to a 148-143 victory with 37 points and 14 rebounds last season, earning MVP honors in his hometown of Los Angeles.

Attempting to do the same in 2012 will be Dwight Howard, who is sure to be the focus of much of the hometown attention.

        TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE WESTERN CONFERENCE: The West features two pairs of teammates in the starting lineup, with Lakers’ Bryant and Andrew Bynum joined by Los Angeles Clippers’ Chris Paul and Blake Griffin. In an exhibition known for its lack of defense, fans can expect one or two highlights from the “Lob City” pair of Paul and Griffin.

Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant rounds out the starting five, with regulars like Dirk Nowitzki, Steve Nash and Tony Parker coming off the bench. First-timers include Bynum, Marc Gasol and LaMarcus Aldridge, while Russell Westbrook and Kevin Love will each be making their second trip to the ASG.

Thunder coach Scott Brooks will guide the team from the bench.

ABOUT THE EASTERN CONFERENCE: Howard, who has yet to back off his trade request, could be playing one of his last games in front of the home crowd at Amway Center. Enjoying the festivities for the sixth time, Howard has averaged 14.2 points and 8.4 rebounds in his All-Star career.

James has put up 24.4 points in his seven previous All-Star appearances, second only to Durant’s 24.5. Chicago’s Derrick Rose and New York’s Carmelo Anthony complete the starting five.

Loul Deng, Roy Hibbert and Andre Iguodala will each be making their first trip, with Celtics teammates Paul Pierce and Rajon Rondo and New Jersey’s Deron Williams rounding out the squad.

The East will be coached by the Bulls’ Tom Thibodeau.

        BUZZER BEATERS:

        1. Pierce, who will be playing in his 10th All-Star Game, has never been voted a starter.

        2. The Conferences have traded victories in each of the last six seasons.

        3. The Eastern Conference holds a 36-24 lead in the all-time series.

        4. Over the last 10 All-Star Games, the East and West have combined for an average of 268.8 points per game since 2002.

        PREDICTION: East 130, West 125

Game of the day: Wisconsin at Ohio State
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wisconsin Badgers at Ohio State Buckeyes (-9.5, 118.5)

                THE STORY
: If No. 9 Ohio State has designs on earning a share of a Big Ten regular season title, it will almost certainly need to begin its final three-game stretch with a win in its final home game over No. 15 Wisconsin – the conference’s most successful road team over the past 10 seasons. The Buckeyes, who have already secured a 58-52 road victory over the Badgers on Feb. 4, enter this contest with wins in 40 of their last 41 home games. The Badgers, who trail Ohio State and Michigan by one game and conference leader Michigan State by two games, are 5-3 in conference road games and 8-4 overall away from home.

                TV: 4 p.m. ET, CBS

ABOUT WISCONSIN (20-8, 9-5 Big Ten, 13-12 ATS): Since coach Bo Ryan took over the program before the 2001-02 season, the Badgers have accumulated 47 road wins in conference play and 61 overall – both marks are the best in the Big Ten over that span. One problem area recently has been Wisconsin’s renowned defense, which has allowed two of its last three opponents to shoot 48 percent or better from the field after not allowing a single opponent to shoot that well over its first 25 games. However, the Badgers have been more efficient beyond the arc lately, hitting at least 37.5 percent of their 3-pointers in consecutive games for just the second time in conference play.

ABOUT OHIO STATE (23-5, 11-4 Big Ten, 14-9 ATS): The Buckeyes are in the top 10 in several NCAA statistical categories: Second in scoring margin (plus-17.9), fourth in turnover margin (plus-4.9) and eighth in scoring defense (57.1 points per game). Ohio State also allows its opponents just 0.86 points per possession – the best mark in the nation. In Ohio State’s earlier victory over Wisconsin, sophomore standout Jared Sullinger controlled the paint early and often – scoring 16 first-half points en route to posting one of his five double-doubles in Big Ten play.

                TRENDS:

                * Favorite is 5-0 ATS in the last five meetings.
                * Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings in Ohio St.
                * Under is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings.
                * Home team is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
                * Badgers are 2-5 ATS in the last seven meetings.

                TIP-INS:

                1. The Badgers (51.7 points allowed per game and 27.9 percent 3-point shooting) are on pace to break their modern-day school records in scoring and 3-point field-goal percentage defense.

                2. William Buford needs just two 3-pointers to become the third Ohio State player ever to record 200 for his career.

                3. Jordan Taylor owns a career 3.06 assist-to-turnover ratio and will likely break the NCAA record held by ex-UTEP guard Julyan Stone (2.70 from 2008-11).

Wisconsin Badgers at Ohio State Buckeyes (-9.5, 118.5)

Jared Sullinger is rarely 100 percent due to a bad back, but DeSean Thomas has been stepping up for the Buckeyes heading into Sunday's home game against Wisconsin.

Thomas is averaging 22 points in the last two games. He went for 25 points and 13 rebounds in a February 18 loss at Michigan before scoring 19 in Tuesday's 83-67 blowout of Illinois. Thomas played all 40 minutes against the Wolverines.

These two Big Ten rivals faced each other at Ohio State on February 4, with the Buckeyes covering the 3.5-point spread by winning 58-52. Thomas hit eight of 15 shots for 16 points while grabbing six boards.

As for the Badgers, they are in relatively lackluster form at the moment. Wisconsin has lot two of its last three, three of its last five, and is 1-6 ATS in its last seven. Bo Ryan and company are coming off a 67-66 loss at Iowa on Thursday.

                  Pick: Ohio State

Pittsburgh Panthers at Louisville Cardinals (-8,129.5)

It's safe to say that Pittsburgh is the streakiest team in all of Division I basketball. The Panthers won 11 of their first 12 games, which included a nine-game winning streak. Then they lost eight in a row. Then they won four in a row.

Now Pitt is back in a streak of futility. Jamie Dixon's squad has dropped four in a row and is 0-4 ATS in that span. The Panthers haven't scored more than 48 points in either of their last two and they have scored 51 points or fewer in three of their last four. They are coming off home losses to West Virginia and South Florida.

"We've shown some signs, but we just seem to deal with guys either getting re-injured or new injuries," Dixon told the Pittsburgh Review Tribune. "I do believe. We've just got to get a good feeling about how we are playing and what we are doing. That's how I can see us improving."

Louisville has lost two of its last three (1-2 ATS) but has won seven of its last nine (7-2 ATS). The Cardinals rolled in the season's previous meeting between the two teams, 73-62 at Pittsburgh on January 21.

                  Pick: Louisville

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vancouver Canucks at Dallas Stars (123, 5)

Something will have to give when Vancouver visits Dallas on Sunday. The Canucks, who lead the NHL with 86 points as of Saturday, have won two in a row and six of their last seven games. The Stars, currently in the eighth and final playoff slot in the Western Conference, are on a three-game winning streak.

Head-to-head, though, a huge edge goes to the Canucks. They have gotten the best of Dallas on six straight occasions (including four in 2010-11) and in nine of the last 10 meetings dating back to 2009. Vancouver outscored the Stars by an incredible 20-4 clip in four games last season.

The Canucks have another reason to be confident heading into Sunday's clash. Prior to Friday's 2-1 win over New Jersey, they stopped Detroit's 23-game home winning streak with a shootout victory on Thursday.

“Game 61, usually they don't mean that much,” Daniel Sedin told the Vancouver Sun after stunning the Red Wings. “This was a special game for us. During the game, you don't really think about [winning streaks] and those kind of things. But when it got to a shootout, then you realize you have a chance to do it.

"Most importantly, we played a good road game against the top team in this league. It was a gutsy performance by a lot of players.”

                          Pick: Canucks

Montreal Canadiens at Florida Panthers (-114, 5)

The Panthers are clinging to the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference as of Saturday, with 66 points. In order to hand onto it, though, they will have to start scoring goals.

Florida has lost four in a row as of Saturday afternoon and has been outscored 13-5 in that span. The team mustered only one goal in losses to Washington and Anaheim prior to the All-Star break and it lost 3-2 in a shootout to Minnesota on Thursday.

The Canadiens have been similarly woeful of late. Sitting in last place in the Eastern Conference, they are on a three-game losing streak and have been outscored 10-2 in that span. Montreal is coming off a 4-1 loss at Washington on Friday.

These two teams have faced each other twice this season, with Florida taking low-scoring affairs by one goal each time (2-1 and 3-2). None of their last nine meetings has gone over the total (the under is 6-0-3 in their last nine).

                          Pick: Under
