West Virginia Struggling With Marquette Next Up

There’s a usual light Friday night in college basketball betting, but a couple of contests could decide the MAAC champion and there’s even a rare Big East battle with a top-10 team.

With the major conferences mostly in hiatus until Saturday, it’s an opportune time to look at the latest mid-major rankings from CollegeInsider.com. Note a number of these teams are on ATS streaks, both good and bad, with two of them in action Friday night. Harvard hosts Princeton in the Ivy League, while Iona welcomes Fairfield in the MAAC (featured below).

    TEAM ATS TREND

    1) Murray State 3-0

    2) Wichita State 5-0

    3) Creighton 1-5

    4) Gonzaga 2-8-1

    5) Middle Tennessee 1-4

    6) Long Beach State 3-0

    7) Harvard 3-1

    8) Saint Mary's 0-5

    9) Drexel 3-3

    10) Iona 2-4

Marquette Golden Eagles at West Virginia Mountaineers
    9:00 p.m. (ET) on ESPN

This is the only Friday game from a major conference and the first meeting between the teams this season. Marquette is 4-0 ATS in the last four, but only one coming in Morgantown. The ‘under’ is 4-1 in the last five meetings overall.

The Golden Eagles (23-5 SU, 14-10-1 ATS) are up to No. 10 in the nation after a 4-game winning streak (4-0 ATS). They’re 11-3 ATS in their last 14 overall, 6-1 ATS away. The offense has really jelled the last four games (86.3 PPG), with the ‘over’ 5-0 in the last five.

Forward Davante Gardner (knee) is questionable after missing six games, but Marquette might not need him. That’s because senior guard Darius Johnson-Odom (18.7 PPG) and forward Jae Crowder (17.1 PPG) continue to shine. The former is averaging 22.8 PPG over the last four games and the latter 26.3 PPG over the last three.

The Mountaineers (17-11 SU, 13-12 ATS) have been as bad lately as Marquette has been good. They’re 2-6 SU in their last eight after starting the Big East season at 5-2 SU. The ATS mark has similarly gone downhill at 2-7 ATS in the last nine. This is a huge game for their NCAA tournament hopes as they’re on the proverbial bubble.

    Butler Bulldogs at Valparaiso Crusaders
    7:00 p.m. (ET) on ESPNU

This is the final regular season game for both teams. Valparaiso has already clinched the Horizon League regular season title at 13-4 SU. Butler has made a strong push and is now a half-game ahead in second at 11-6 SU. The top-2 teams get a double-bye in the conference tourney.

The Bulldogs (18-12 SU, 9-16-2 ATS) have had a crazy season after making the NCAA title game the last two years. They’re peaking at the right time at 5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS in the last five. Scoring has been up over that span (65.3 PPG) with an already stingy defense even better (52.6 PPG). Butler should be the far more motivated team on Friday.

The Crusaders (20-10 SU, 12-14-1 ATS) have gotten a great first year from coach Bryce Drew as they were predicted to finish in the middle of the conference. They have faded down the stretch a bit at 2-2 SU and 0-4 ATS, even needing OT to beat bottom dweller Loyola (IL) 66-62 as 11½-point home favorites on Tuesday.

Valparaiso won the first meeting this year, 77-71 (OT) at Butler as 5½-point ‘dogs way back on December 3. The Crusaders are 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings overall, including winning at home last year, 85-79 (OT again) as 2-point ‘dogs.

    Fairfield Stags at Iona Gaels
    9:00 p.m. (ET) on ESPNU

This is a crucial game out of the MAAC in addition to Loyola (MD) at Rider at 7:00 p.m. (ET) on ESPN2. Iona leads the conference with a 13-3 SU record, with Fairfield and Loyola (MD) both a game back at 12-4 SU.

The Stags (17-11 SU, 10-14-1 ATS) are the top defensive team in the MAAC (60.5 PPG). They’re 7-0 SU and 5-2 ATS in their last seven conference games, surrendering just 52.9 PPG with the ‘under’ 5-2. They did lose a BracketBusters contest at Horizon League Milwaukee (67-63) as 2-point underdogs last Saturday.

The Gaels (22-6 SU 11-13-2 ATS) are the top scoring team in the nation (83.1 PPG). Points scored (86.3 PPG) and allowed (77.7 PPG) have both increased the last six games with the ‘over’ 5-1. They’re 0-3 ATS in their last three home games, despite winning them all. Two of the pointspreads were over 20 points.

Iona won the first meeting this year, 71-62 as 2-point road favorites on January 27. Fairfield was 2-1 SU and 3-0 ATS in the prior three meetings, covering the last one played in New Rochelle, New York, 74-69 loss as 6-point ‘dogs.

New Jersey Devils Host Canucks On Friday NHL Betting Slate

Just one night after taking on the Western Conference’s top team, the Vancouver Canucks will be back on the road Friday night to take on the New Jersey Devils at 7:00 p.m. (ET).

Vancouver’s bid to end the Detroit Red Wings’ 23-game home winning streak Thursday night will undoubtedly be a draining one, but the Canucks won’t get a breather against the surging New Jersey Devils. Vancouver (38-16-6) entered its game against Detroit with a 10-1-2 record over its last 13 games, but New Jersey (35-20-4) has been equally strong, currently riding a four-game winning streak and boasting a 9-1-1 record over its last 11 games.

The Canucks own the league's best power play (22.1%) and will have a tough test against New Jersey’s penalty kill, which ranks second in the NHL at 88.5 percent. Vancouver leads the league in road wins with 20 (20-10-2).

One of the most interesting streaks over the last month of hockey has been the Boston Bruins’ consistently mediocre play. The Bruins (36-20-2) haven’t won back-to-back games since January 10 and 12, but also haven’t lost more than two in a row at any point over that stretch as they are 11-10-1 (11-11 on the moneyline) over their last 22 games.

Boston looked dominant in a 4-2 road win over St. Louis Wednesday night; will they win their second in a row at the Buffalo Sabres Friday night at 7:30 p.m. (ET)?

Buffalo (26-27-7) had lost four straight but enter Friday’s game on a two-game winning streak after beating Pittsburgh and the New York Islanders at home. The Sabres lost the first two meetings against Boston, but won the last one at home, 6-0. All three games have gone ‘over’ the total.

With a seven-point lead over Boston and New Jersey, the New York Rangers appear to have a stranglehold on the Eastern Conference’s top spot, and with four games in hand on Detroit they still also have a shot at winning the President’s Trophy with the NHL’s best record. The Rangers (38-15-5) will look to add another notch to their belt Friday night in Long Island against the New York Islanders (25-27-8) at 7:00 p.m. (ET).

After losing to the Islanders on the road in their first meeting, the Rangers have won each of the last three meetings between the Big Apple rivals, one in Long Island and two at Madison Square Garden. Three of the four games went ‘over’ the total.

Rounding out Friday night’s schedule is the Montreal Canadiens (24-27-10) at Washington Capitals (29-26-5) at 7:00 p.m. (ET), the Colorado Avalanche (30-27-4) at Columbus Blue Jackets (18-35-7) at 7:00 p.m. (ET) and the Minnesota Wild (26-24-9) at Dallas Stars (30-26-4) at 8:30 p.m. (ET). Washington, Dallas and Colorado each entered Thursday within two points of a playoff spot, so these three teams should have some added motivation to step up and try to get into contention.

      Friday's Tip Sheet

      February 24, 2012

Eleven games are slated for Friday’s college basketball card, including an intriguing Big East battle between Marquette (23-5 SU, 14-10 ATS) and West Virginia (17-11 SU, 13-12 ATS) from Morgantown.

The Golden Eagles have been on fire lately, winning 11 of their last 12 games. More importantly, Buzz Peterson’s team has covered nine of those games during this stretch. Plus, bettors riding the Marquette-Over parlay have seen that ticket cash seven times in the last 12 as well.

Will the "Marquette Express" win and cover again tonight?

The Eagles haven’t been nearly as dominant in true road games (5-4 SU, 6-3 ATS), but they have won four of their last five away as visitors.

Fortunately, they’ll be playing a West Virginia team that is lacking chemistry and confidence. The Mountaineers have dropped six of eight, including a 27-point (44-71) setback at Notre Dame on Wednesday. Surprisingly, Bob Huggins’ team only trailed by two (28-30) at the break before the implosion on both sides of the court.

During its struggles, WVU has suffered three straight losses at home but they all came by six points or less.

Despite knowing all of the above, oddsmakers at BetOnline.com have opened West Virginia as a 1 ½-point home favorite over a red-hot squad. Marquette has gone 2-2 SU as an underdog this season, but they’ve covered all four.

It’s uncommon to see teams play on one day rest after conference play begins but that’s the case tonight. Looking at their numbers, Marquette has gone 3-1 both SU and ATS on with one day off while WVU is 2-3 SU and 1-4 ATS. In similar spots during conference play, WVU has gone 0-3 both SU and ATS behind an offense that put up 48, 57 and 66 points.

This will be the first meeting between the pair this season. Marquette beat West Virginia 67-61 in last year’s Big East tournament. Prior to this encounter, the home team won the previous six affairs.

After this game, WVU closes at home against DePaul next Tuesday and then at South Florida on Saturday. Marquette finishes with two more tests, at Cincinnati on Wednesday and at home next Saturday versus Georgetown.

Bettors can follow this contest on ESPN at 9:00 p.m. ET.

      On the Horizon

Butler (18-12 SU, 9-16 ATS) won’t be winning the Horizon League regular season title this year but the school is starting to come together at the right time. The Bulldogs have won five straight games and they’ve covered four of them. Keeping the streak intact tonight won’t be easy with a road battle against conference leader, Valparaiso (20-10 SU, 12-13 ATS). The Crusaders have earned the bye to next week’s semifinals and if they win out, they’ll host the Horizon League championship. Earlier this season on Dec. 3, Valparaiso beat Butler 77-71 as a 5 ½-point road underdog in overtime. It was the second straight win for the Crusaders over the Bulldogs and both of them came in overtime too. Both of those games went ‘over’ the number. The total for this matchup opened at 122 ½. Valparaiso is a short favorite (-1.5). ESPNU will provide coverage of this game at 7:00 p.m. ET.

      Ivy League Numbers

Columbia at Yale: Yale has won and covered six straight in this series. Yale has gone 9-1 at home this season. Columbia opened as a five-point ‘dog.

Cornell at Brown: Cornell has won 11 in a row over Brown, covering eight of those games. Make a note that Cornell has gone 1-12 on the road. The Big Red are giving four points on the road.

Penn at Dartmouth: Penn has captured the last five meetings (3-2 ATS) against Dartmouth, including a 58-52 home win this season on Feb. 11. The Big Green (5-21) hasn’t won back-to-back games all season and they just beat Brown (58-53) last Saturday. Penn can be backed as a 5 ½-point road favorite.

Princeton at Harvard: The Crimson can wrap up the Ivy League title this weekend with two wins and some help. Bettors have a revenge game here with Harvard losing 70-62 at Princeton on Feb. 11. Harvard has gone 4-0 SU and 2-2 ATS at home in conference play, winning three of four by double digits. The ‘under’ has gone 3-1 in those tilts. Harvard opened as an 11 ½-point favorite.

No. 10 Marquette looks to keep rolling at WVU

MARQUETTE GOLDEN EAGLES (23-5, 12-3 Big East)

at WEST VIRGINIA MOUNTAINEERS (17-11, 7-8 Big East)

        Tip-Off: Friday, 9:00 p.m. EDT
        Line: Even, Total: 144

No. 10 Marquette looks to grab its first-ever victory in Morgantown and maintain a hold of second place in the Big East as the Golden Eagles take on slumping West Virginia on Friday night.

The Golden Eagles are quickly becoming the most dangerous and explosive team in the Big East—winners of four consecutive games (SU and ATS) by an average margin of 15.5 points per game. All three of Marquette’s conference losses came on the road to the three other schools currently in the top four of the Big East standings (Syracuse, Notre Dame and Georgetown), and the Golden Eagles are 4-0 ATS as a road underdog this year. West Virginia hopes to bounce back from an ugly 71-44 loss at Notre Dame on Wednesday and avoid losing four consecutive home games for the first time since the 2002-03 season. The Mountaineers are 1-5 ATS over their last six, and haven’t won a home game since a 77-74 overtime victory over Cincinnati on January 21. WVU is also 1-6 SU against ranked opponents this season. This line reflects the desperation and hunger Vegas expects from West Virginia—currently on the NCAA Tournament bubble—but betting on a team solely because it is a “must-win” is rarely a strong basis for making a pick. The Golden Eagles are one of the hottest and most underrated teams in the country, so don’t be afraid to take MARQUETTE to win.

This strong FoxSheets trend also likes the Golden Eagles to win on Friday.

MARQUETTE is 12-3 ATS (+8.7 Units) in road games off a home win over the last 2 seasons. The average score was MARQUETTE 73.3, OPPONENT 71.6 - (Rating = 2*).

In a conference chock-full of superstars, unheralded Marquette senior forward Jae Crowder (17.1 PPG, 7.7 RPG) is quickly make a case for Big East Player of the Year honors. Crowder has been sensational in his past three games, averaging 26.3 PPG, including a career-high 29 in a 79-64 victory over UConn last Saturday. At 6-foot-6, 235 pounds, Crowder is built like a truck and is a matchup nightmare because of his ability to play in the post or on the perimeter. Despite being the de facto “big man” on an undersized Marquette squad, Crowder shoots an impressive 38.5 percent from three-point range. Senior guard Darius Johnson-Odom (18.7 PPG, 2nd in Big East) creates tons of space for Crowder as the court leader of this Golden Eagles team, and at 215 pounds, is not afraid to drive the lane and create contact. Marquette may be small in height, but in terms of muscle, few teams in the Big East stack up.

Six-foot-8 senior Kevin Jones (20.3 PPG, 11.2 RPG) is the Big East’s leading scorer, and presents a terrific matchup for Crowder. Jones and Crowder are extremely similar players—versatile forwards who can play a dangerous inside-outside game. Both are usually matchup nightmares for opponents, but Jones might be the one player in the Big East with the size and athleticism to slow down Crowder. Head coach Bob Huggins will need him and forward Deniz Kilicli (11.4 PPG, 5.4 RPG) to crash the boards and double-team Crowder to slow down Marquette’s electric fast-break offense. The Mountaineers rank 23rd in the nation in rebound margin (+6.0 RPG), and by limiting Crowder’s effectiveness, the Mountaineers will put the scoring burden on the shoulders of Johnson-Odom, who will have an interesting matchup of his own against physical senior guard Darryl “Truck” Bryant (16.5 PPG). There’s no question West Virginia is the type of team that matches up well with Marquette, and it will be important for the Mountaineers to knock some shots down early to get the crowd into the game.
