Wednesday’s betting tips: SDSU calls players-only meeting

    Who’s hot

NBA: Oklahoma City is 13-3 against the spread in its last 16 games against Eastern Conference teams.

NBA: Orlando is 5-1 against the number in its last six.

NHL: Ottawa has won four of its last five.

NHL: St. Louis is 20-6 in its last 26 games as a favorite.

NCAAB: Syracuse is 10-3 against the spread coming off an ATS loss.

NCAAB: Temple is 9-1 against the spread in its last 10 overall.

    Who’s not

NBA: Boston is 0-4 against the number in its last four overall and 0-5 ATS in its last five road games.

NBA: New Jersey is 7-19 against the spread in its last 26 home games.

NHL: Washington is 8-20 in its last 28 road games.

NHL: The under is 4-12-1 in Boston’s last 17 road games.

NCAAB: The over is 0-13 in the last 13 meetings between Notre Dame and West Virginia.

NCAAB: Boise State is 4-12 against the spread in its last 16.

    Key stat

62- San Diego State is averaging just 62 points per game over its current three-game losing streak, down from its 70.9 average on the year. The Aztecs, who were upset by Air Force last weekend as 4.5-point favorites, hadn’t lost three games in a row since 2008. The team called a players-only meeting Monday to prepare for Wednesday’s meeting with Wyoming. "I felt that really brought us together and really put us in the right mindset for practice today," senior Tim Shelton told reporters. "I really felt we got better today.” Oddsmakers have the Aztecs as 5-point favorites.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Joe Johnson, Atlanta Hawks - Johnson will sit out the team's game against the New York Knicks on Wednesday due to tendinitis in his left knee. The All-Star guard left Monday's loss to the Chicago Bulls midway through the third quarter and didn't return. Johnson is averaging 17.6 points and 3.8 assists in 32 games for the Hawks this season.

    Game of the day

Los Angeles Lakers at Dallas Mavericks (-4.5, 180)

    Notable quotable

"He's probably not at his best, and you have to look at it that way. Maybe it's a good chance to play good, and maybe I can beat him. He's won this tournament three times and he has a very good match play record ... but not so good on the Ryder Cup. I think he's beatable." - Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano on facing Tiger Woods in the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, which begins Wednesday. Woods responded to these comments in news conference by saying “he’s beatable, too.”

    Notes and tips

The Drake Bulldogs are hoping Ben Simons is well enough to play Wednesday when they host Southern Illinois. Simons, who has missed the last five games after being diagnosed with mononucleosis, is averaging 16.1 points per game this season and has topped 20 points six times this year. He’s officially listed as questionable.

St. Louis Blues right wing Jamie Langenbrunner has been placed on injured reserve and is expected to miss four weeks with a broken foot. The veteran forward broke his left foot during Sunday's 3-1 loss in Chicago. The 36-year-old has four goals and 17 assists in 57 games for the Blues this season.

The New Jersey Nets are expected to have center Brook Lopez (foot) back on the court Wednesday against the Orlando Magic. Lopez scored nine points in 21 minutes of work in his season debut over the weekend against Milwaukee and then sat out Monday’s game as a precaution, even though he tried to talk his way into the lineup. The Nets are 5.5-point home underdogs against Orlando.

The Colorado Avalanche acquired right wing Steve Downie from the Tampa Bay Lightning as part of a three-team deal that sent defenseman Kyle Quincey to the Detroit Red Wings. Tampa Bay received Quincey in exchange for Downie and turned around and shipped the blue-liner to the Red Wings in exchance for a first-round draft pick and minor league defenseman Sebastien Piche. Downie had 12 goals and 16 assists in 55 games with the Lightning this season. He had a career-high 22 goals and 46 points in the 2009-10 season. Quincey, in his third season with Colorado, had five goals and 18 assists in 54 games. He was a fourth-round draft pick of Detroit in 2003 and appeared in 13 regular-season games and 13 postseason games in three seasons.

      Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

NFL teams furthest under the salary cap with free agency set to start in a few weeks:

      Tampa Bay Buccaneers $67M

      Kansas City Chiefs $62M

      Cincinnati Bengals $60M

      Washington Redskins $49M

      Denver Broncos $49M

      Jacksonville Jaguars $45M

      ******************

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud........

      13) As usual, the San Antonio Spurs are flying under the NBA’s radar; the Knicks (who haven’t won a title since 1973) get on cover of Sports Illustrated for getting to .500, the Spurs have won four NBA titles in 13 years and no one mentions them, which is probably how they like it, but they’re having another very good season, and with Manu Ginobili missing much of the season.

      12) Tampa Bay Buccaneers are $67M under the salary cap; if I had season tickets, I’d want to see some of that $67M spent before my seats got renewed for next season.

      11) Buccaneers hired Bill Sheridan as their new DC, which ain’t gonna sell many tickets, considering how hideous Sheridan’s defense played when he took over as DC from Steve Spagnuolo after the Giants won the Super Bowl four years ago. Better spend most of that cap money on defensive players.

      10) The first telephone book was published in 1878. Just thought you’d like to know.

      9) NBA regular season is now pretty much half over, in terms of games played; when is DirecTV going to lower the criminally-high price of their Full Court package? One thing I learned this season; with NBAtv/ESPN/ TNT having a game on at 10:30 most weeknights, I don’t miss the Full Court package as much as I thought I would, so its +$170 for me.

      8) Dan Uggla, who flopped miserably in his first year as Atlanta’s 2B (and his first full year as 2B of my fantasy team) has added 20 pounds thru increased weightlifting. Hopefully that was to help him hit the ball farther and not to impress Bibi Jones.

      7) Odds on New Mexico winning the national title in hoops have dropped from 200-1 to 50-1. Lobos have never even been in the Sweet 16 before.

      6) Broncos’ backup Brady Quinn, for some reason, was interviewed in GQ magazine, and let it be known he’s not the biggest Tim Tebow fan.

Two questions: a) If I’m a QB for the Broncos and I couldn’t get on the field this season, then I’m checking out want ads for the Arena League, because that’s where my career is headed, and

      b) Why is anyone interviewing Quinn about anything? Babe Laufenberg wasn’t available? Gus Frerotte? Billy Volek?

      5) You think the athletes at San Diego State are going to miss Mountain West Conference? Aztecs’ womens’ basketball team got stranded in Laramie, WY Tuesday. Imagine living in San Diego and getting stranded by snow in Laramie? Not good.

San Diego State will be in the Big West next year, where the only non-California road trip will be to Hawai’i. Much better.

      4) Match Play golf pool tip of the day: Over the last 13 years, #16 seeds are 15-37 in the first round against #1 seeds, so you figure one of the four #1’s is going down Wednesday.

      3) Must admit that I’m looking forward to watching some NASCAR this year; I know NOTHING about cars, not even sure I could pop the hood on my own car, that’s how stupid I am about cars, but I enjoy the enthusiasm of the TV people and the pit stops are fun to watch.

      2) By the time Manny Ramirez has served his 50-game suspension, the A’s will be out of the pennant race, and if they’re not, I’m going to be very happy. As a matter of fact, just made that my goal for the 2012 A’s; “Stay in it ‘til Manny gets here”.

Look at the A’s roster; staying in the race for 50 games would be an accomplishment.

      1) Remember when Vince McMahon’s WWF sued that they shouldn’t be subject to anti-steroids law, because they were “sports entertainment”, not real sports? Well, the lawyer who made that argument is now running for President, Mr Rick Santorum. What a country.

Exposing the Top 25: Where the NCAAB polls went wrong
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Most overrated Top-25 team: Wisconsin Badgers

Wisconsin has been one of the more inconsistent teams when it comes to perimeter shooting. The Badgers look like world beaters one night and then go ice cold from the outside on another.

Wisconsin misses the outside shooting of Jon Leuer, with no one stepping up to take his place. The Badgers are still one of the best teams in the nation on the defensive end, but you have to think that when they're challenged by athletic and quick teams in March, their stingy defense won't be enough.

Wisconsin does play in the difficult Big Ten, but it’s just 8-5 SU in its last 13 games and it has suffered some ugly losses, including those to Michigan State, Michigan, and Iowa. The Badgers must stay focused on Iowa Thursday and not look ahead to Sunday's game at Ohio State or they could get swept by the Hawkeyes.

Most underrated Top-25 team: Notre Dame Fighting Irish

After posting Notre Dame as an unranked team that deserved to be ranked on a couple of occasions, the Fighting Irish are currently in the Top 25 but not ranked high enough, in my opinion.

Since Mike Brey tweaked the Irish attack and lineup, they have done nothing but win. The Irish have won eight in a road SU, while going 7-1 ATS. Notre Dame has beaten Syracuse and won on the road over West Virginia, Seton Hall, UConn, and Villanova, while whipping Marquette by 17 points in South Bend.

The Irish have held their last eight opponents to 55.9 ppg on 38.3 percent shooting. They have been getting stingier on the deep perimeter, holding their last five foes to 16-of-79 3-point shooting - a connection rate of just 20.3 percent.

Notre Dame is playing as well as anyone in the polls right now, but must be cautious when it hosts West Virginia Wednesday.

Unranked team that should be ranked: St. Louis Billikens

Rick Majerus' squad crushed Richmond and Fordham this past week and, while we expected the Billikens to make it past those two teams without much resistance, we still feel they deserve a few more votes.

The Billikens, at 22-5 SU, are just a handful of plays from a 26-1 SU mark. And all five losses came against teams that will be playing in postseason tournaments. Rick Majerus has always produced Billikens teams that were stingy on defensive, but it was usually due to the fact that they had to play a deliberate offensive pace because of a lack of scorers. This year's version can score points. St. Louis averages nearly 70 points per game on 45.7 percent shooting.

St. Louis has a great shot to finish the season with three more wins, facing Rhode Island on the road, hosting Xavier, then playing at Duquesne. I believe by the time the regular season is finished, SLU will be ranked in the Top 25.

West Virginia Mountaineers at Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-3, 125)

Riding an eight-game win streak all the way to a No. 18 national ranking, Notre Dame takes aim at a season sweep of West Virginia after rallying for a 55-51 victory in Morgantown, W.Va., on Feb. 8.

The Fighting Irish had made just two of their 18 3-point shots in the game before hitting three straight during a late 11-0 run to seize control of the contest.

Since losing star forward Tim Abromaitis to a season-ending injury in November, the red-hot Fighting Irish have found surprising success by slowing the pace of the game.

Their 61.1 possessions per contest in conference action are the second fewest among Big East teams, and they are allowing a league-best 58.7 points against conference opponents.

Eric Atkins is putting up 13 points per game and just dropped 17 points and five assists in Notre Dame’s 74-70 overtime win at Villanova.

                Pick: Irish

Michigan State Spartans at Minnesota Golden Gophers (6, 128)

After a stretch in which No. 6 Michigan State dropped three of five games to end January, it has not lost since.

The Spartans, who lost those three contests on the road by a combined nine points, have rolled to five straight double-digit victories in February – including three against ranked teams – by getting back to coach Tom Izzo’s usual trademarks, rebounding and defense.

During their five-game winning streak, the Spartans are enjoying a plus-11 advantage in rebounding and holding their opponents to 34.3 percent shooting from the field.

In Sunday’s road win at Purdue, Michigan State forced the Boilermakers to miss 22 of their first 23 field-goal attempts in the second half after allowing Purdue to shoot 46.7 percent in the first half.

While Minnesota is fourth in the Big Ten in field goal percentage, the Spartans’ hard-nosed defensive approach figures to rattle the turnover-prone Golden Gophers, who commit a conference-worst 14.3 turnovers per game.

                Pick: Spartans

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dallas at LA Lakers Wednesday Preview
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The last time we saw the Los Angeles Lakers in Dallas, it resulted in what looks like a sizable shift in the Laker franchise’s direction.

The date was May 8, 2011, and it was Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinals. The Lakers entered the playoffs as the huge favorites in the West to reach their fourth straight NBA Finals, but they were pushed by the New Orleans Hornets and Chris Paul in the first round. Still, not many gave the Mavericks much of a chance in the semis.

By now we all know what happened, as the Mavs finished their stunning sweep on that May 8 afternoon, a 122-86 embarrassment, sending Lakers coach Phil Jackson off to Montana (or wherever the Zen Master is nowadays). It was the largest margin of victory in a game that ended a four-game playoff sweep in NBA history. Dallas would go on to upset the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals, while the Lakers started asking questions that still haven’t been answered this season.

L.A. knew it needed to get some offseason help to get through the West and figured it had the answer in landing Chris Paul – for about 30 minutes until NBA Commissioner David Stern put the kibosh on the deal. Then the Lakers shockingly traded star sixth man Lamar Odom to these Mavericks for essentially a trade exception, something the team still hasn’t used. Clearly the Lakers (19-13) remain flawed, and this week Kobe Bryant vented about whether the team would trade Pau Gasol or not (he was in the Paul three-way trade). Kobe’s point: either do something now or say Gasol is staying put.

This is the start of an incredibly tough back-to-back as L.A. visits Oklahoma City on Thursday night in the teams’ last game before the all-star break. Think there will be any Dwight Howard-to-L.A. rumors at All-Star Weekend in Orlando? This is the Mavs’ final game before the break.

                      How the Teams Enter

L.A. enters off one of its most impressive games of the season, beating Portland, 103-92, at Staples Center on Monday. The game wasn’t remotely that close. The Blazers took a 3-0 lead and then all the Lakers did was go on a 37-4 run. One night after giving up a season-high 63 points in the first half of a loss at Phoenix, the Lakers yielded a season-low 30 to Portland. Bryant had 28 points to lead the Lakers. It was only the fifth time this season the Lakers reached triple digits in points.

Dallas (21-12), which had a six-game winning streak stopped Sunday in New York, had little trouble with visiting Boston on Monday night, winning 89-73 to improve to 13-5 at home. Dirk Nowitzki, as usual, led Dallas with 26 points and a season-high 16 boards, while Boston was playing without suspended point guard Rajon Rondo and injured Kevin Garnett. Since getting a four-game break to strengthen his sore right knee and improve his game conditioning, Nowitzki is averaging 21.7 points the last 13 games. The Mavs are 9-4 in that stretch.

                      Betting Story Lines

Kobe says he thinks the trade rumors are affecting Gasol’s game, but the Spaniard has 10 straight double-doubles – his longest streak as a Laker -- after putting up 16 points and 12 boards against the Blazers. GM Mitch Kupchak wouldn’t commit to talking Gasol’s name out of trade talks with the standard “I will do whatever makes the team better” cliché. The Lakers held a players-only meeting after Monday’s win to stress togetherness in the wake of Bryant’s public outburst and some complaining about Coach Mike Brown’s practice schedule -- the players were not happy that after beating Phoenix at home Friday night and flying to Phoenix on Saturday afternoon, they had to get up for a 10 a.m. shootaround Sunday morning (and went on to lose that night’s game handily).

Dallas has found some guard help off the bench in Dominque Jones. He had seven points, five assists and one turnover in 25 minutes against Boston. And perhaps more importantly he played well enough that starter Jason Kidd spent the last 15 minutes on the bench.

The Mavs are carefully monitoring Kidd’s minutes, which has become especially vital with backup point guard Delonte West out 3-5 weeks with a fractured ring finger and fellow guard Rodrigue Beaubois having missed the last three games because of his father's death. He won’t play tonight and reportedly is on the trade market. The 38-year-old Kidd already has missed 10 games this year. The Mavs’ bench has been a problem otherwise of late. In the past two games, Vince Carter has averaged 6.5 points on 31.2 percent shooting and grabbed only four rebounds in 53 minutes. And Odom, a huge disappointment, is 3-for-14 from the field (0-for-9 from long range) in the past two games for six points.

The Lakers and Mavs played one of the season’s ugliest games in L.A. back on Jan. 16, a Lakers 73-70 victory with L.A. a 3.5-point favorite. Derek Fisher hit a tiebreaking three-pointer with 3.1 seconds to play, while the Mavs’ Carter missed a tying three-pointer at the buzzer. Kobe entered that game having scored at least 40 points in four in a row but was held to 14. Bryant was 0-for-10 from the field when guarded by Shawn Marion. Dirk had 21 but a crucial turnover late. The Mavs shot 35 percent from the field and the Lakers 38.2. They were a combined 5-for-36 from three-point range, with the Lakers’ lone three-point of the night being Fisher’s.

The Lakers were 1-1 in Big D during last regular season before losing both playoff games.

                      Betting Odds and Key Trends

The Mavericks opened as 4.5-point favorites with the total at 179.5 on NBA odds. L.A. is 15-17 ATS overall and 4-12 ATS on road. Dallas is 20-13 ATS overall and 11-7 at home. ‘Over/under’ records: LAL 14-17-1, DAL 13-20.

The Lakers are 1-6 ATS in past seven on the road. The Mavs are 12-3 ATS in their past 15 at home vs. teams with losing road record. The over is 4-1 in Lakers’ past five. The under is 4-1 in Mavs’ past five. The Lakers are 0-5 ATS in past five meetings and 1-4 ATS in past five in Big D.

                      Predictions

The Mavericks know they have nearly a week off after this one so they can go all out, while the Lakers have to travel to Oklahoma City right after this one. I have no reason to trust the Lakers when they are 5-12 on the road. Take the Mavs and give the points.

Game of the day: Atlanta Hawks at New York Knicks
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Atlanta Hawks at New York Knicks (-5, 187)

THE STORY: Jeremy Lin and Carmelo Anthony finally got on the court together on Monday. The results weren’t so great. The New York Knicks have some hope for the future with Lin directing the offense, but they still need some work on the defensive end. Lin was torched by Deron Williams in the loss to New Jersey on Monday. The Atlanta Hawks are having the opposite problem, with the offense consistently unable to keep pace. The stumbling Hawks have dropped seven of 10 this month while putting up 86.2 points.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, SSO (Atlanta), MSG (New York)

ABOUT THE HAWKS (19-13): Atlanta could use the All-Star break to get its shooting back together. The Hawks have gone over 90 points twice in the last 10 games and have been held under 80 in dropping each of the last two. Atlanta came back from a 20-point deficit in Chicago on Monday to cut the lead to five but then went the final 3:24 without a point in the 90-79 setback. Joe Johnson was injured late on Monday and will miss the final two games before the break. No one on the team needs a rest more than the All-Star guard, who is shooting 17.2 percent (5 for 29) from 3-point range in the last five games.

ABOUT THE KNICKS (16-17): New York dropped below .500 again with the 100-92 loss to the Nets and have a trip to Miami looming on Thursday. The star has dimmed around “Linsanity” a bit with losses in two of the last three but the early returns with Anthony are good. The All-Star forward returned to the lineup and had no trouble deferring and distributing, finishing with six assists. The Knicks are also attempting to integrate Baron Davis and J.R. Smith into the rotation.

                        TRENDS:

                        - New York is 7-2 against the spread in its last nine home games.
                        - The under is 9-3 in Atlanta's last 12.
                        - New York is 8-3 against the spread in the last 11 meetings between the two teams.

                        BUZZER BEATERS:

                        1. The teams split four meetings last season, with New York taking the final two.

                        2. Knicks G Iman Shumpert (knee) sat out Monday and is day-to-day.

                          Hot homer refs

Pat Fraher – Fraher is the hottest homer ref in the Association, with home teams going 18-6 straight up in his games and 16-8 against the spread. Home teams are winning his games by an average of 8.2 points.

Tre Maddox – Maddox has seen home teams fill the bucket in his games, averaging 100.9 points per game on their way to a 14-6 mark against the spread (16-4 straight up).

                          Hot over refs

Dick Bavetta – Bavetta has been around for a long time and has been great to over bettors this season. So far the over is working on 18-7 mark, with a 196.3-point total, in his games.

Haywoode Workman - The over is out to a 14-8 mark on the year when Workman is in charge and all six games that he has worked with totals of 184.5 or less have played over. The average total in his games checks in at 196.7.

                          Hot under refs

Jason Phillips – Phillips has seen just four of the 22 games he has worked so far play under with an average total of 180.59. Home teams allow just 88.8 points per game under his watch.

Mike Callahan - The under is on a 17-6 run with Callahan on the whistle this season. Last year the under finished at 40-34 in Callahan’s games.

Pick 'n' roll: Wednesday's best NBA bets
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oddsmakers have yet to set a line for the Celtics-Thunder matchup. Pick should be considered an early lean.

Boston Celtics at Oklahoma City Thunder (N/A)

The Oklahoma City Thunder have won 10 consecutive home games and the Boston Celtics have lost six of seven games to fall below .500.

Oklahoma City’s homecourt success is the franchise’s best streak since the team won 12 straight during the 1997-98 season when known as the Seattle SuperSonics. Boston scored just 73 points in Monday’s loss to Dallas.

Forward Kevin Garnett is expected back after missing the past two games for personal reasons, but Rajon Rondo still has one game left on his suspension.

That leaves Paul Pierce to shoulder the offensive load. He scored 20 point in Boston’s loss to the Mavericks and leads the team averaging 17.3 points per night on the year.

He’ll need a lot more than that to keep this one close.

                            Pick: Thunder

Utah Jazz at Minnesota Timberwolves (-4, 197)

It wasn’t so much that the Timberwolves lost to Denver in overtime Monday night, but the way they lost.

Down three points with seconds remaining in the extra session, Martell Webster stole an inbounds pass and broke toward the hoop. But instead of pulling up for a trey that could tie the game, he went in for a dunk.

"If I had to do it over again, yeah, I'd probably pull up for a jump shot," Webster said. "But what was going through my mind was go to the rim and possibly get fouled. The contingency to that shot was get a bucket, get a foul, they miss free throws and we get another shot. It didn't work out that way."

Minnesota ended up taking a 103-101 loss after Corey Brewer hit a free throw. It was a comedy of errors for those that had the Timberwolves, who covered as 3.5-point underdogs.

                            We like the under here.

                            Pick: Under

                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington Capitals at Ottawa Senators (-155, 5.5)

At this point in the year, you have to start questioning how much the Washington Capitals really care.

While injuries have played a significant role in their disappointing season, there was no excuse for Monday’s 5-0 loss to the lowly Hurricanes.

Alex Ovechkin looked uninterested, the Caps lacked any sort of a forecheck, and turned pucks throughout the evening in all three zones.

“Embarrassing effort, right from the start,” Troy Brouwer told reporters after the game. “We weren’t ready to play, gave up chances, gave the puck away, didn’t get the puck in deep. Just all-around embarrassing.”

One thing the Senators will give you is an honest effort. This is a lot of chalk for us, but we just can’t get behind the Caps right now.

                              Pick: Senators

Boston Bruins at St. Louis Blues (-130, 5)

If you haven’t been keeping close tabs on the Blues, you might be surprised to realize they have just three regulation losses on home ice this year.

They struggle offensively, so getting the last change at home to line up specific matchups has been key to their success.

"When you have one line going, it's too easy for the other team to shut your offense down," Andy McDonald told reporters. "So we really need contributions from our top six forwards. That's going to be the key for us going forward.

"We've got great goaltending, team defense we're really strong. It's just going to be whether or not we can get that depth scoring we need -- our top six and then the third line chipping in here and there for us.”

Expect the Blues to look for some more offensive punch as the trade deadline nears, but for Wednesday’s game, they’ll lean on matchups and responsible defensive play against the Bruins.

That means goals should be hard to come by.

                              Pick: Under
