PirateBob, here is our (Right Angle Sports) play for Saturday. However, the line has already moved 3.5 points. You may want to consider a subscription in order to get the plays earlier.
Season Record: 14-5 +9.5 UNITS
One play for Saturday:
Virginia Tech vs East Carolina (pick) - 4:00pm Pacific - Norfolk, VA
This is a solid Pirate basketball team. They would have posted a better record the past two seasons if not for unfavorable C-USA scheduling that had them facing Marquette, Cincinnati, and Louisville twice a year. They still have improved their final RPI ranking in all four seasons under Bill Herrion and should do so again this year.
Eight of the top nine players are back from last season and they have added a good looking freshman point guard in Japhet McNeil. He started for three years at New York's famed Chris the King High School in Brooklyn. McNeil has started every game for ECU and is averaging 7.7ppg with 4.4apg. Senior wing Derrick Wiley (team high 15.3ppg) and sophomore combo guard Belton Rivers (leads team in 3-point shooting) both now have a year of Division 1 basketball under their belts and are improved. Wiley came in as a JC transfer last season and led the team in scoring. Rivers was forced to play a lot of point guard as a freshman but can now move back to his natural position of off guard. The remaining starting spots are filled by senior forward Gabriel Mikulas (13.7ppg, 7.3rpg) who is very skilled and can do a little of everything and 6-10 junior center Moussa Badiane (9.9ppg, 6.9rpg). Badiane has improved his offensive skills and has always been a terrific shotblocker currently ranking 4th in the nation with 3.85 per game. Senior forward Erroyl Bing (10.7ppg, 8.3rpg) is a three year starter who is the first player off the bench this season. Freshman Mike Cook (7.3ppg) is the top reserve guard.
Virginia Tech has returned freshman forward Coleman Collins and sophomore guard Shawn Harris to their lineup in the past two weeks but still only suits up 7 Division 1 quality players. Of those 7, three are freshman and three are sophomores. Senior Bryant Matthews is the only active upperclassmen on the team after Carlos Dixon opted to redshirt and Dimari Thompkins left the team. Both Dixon and Thompkins were projected starters. Freshman guard Zabian Dowdell missed last game due to a death in his family and is listed as questionable at time of this writing. It would be a big loss for the Hokies if he does not play. I am expecting this young team to struggle against an experienced and hard nosed Pirate team.
ECU comes into the game at 6-1, their only loss coming at George Mason. This was prior to GMU losing guard Lamar Butler to an ankle injury in first half vs North Carolina. GMU is extremely well coached and probably will not lose a home game all season. In the game, ECU actually led by 7 midway through the second half before GMU went on a game deciding 17-0 run. All of ECU's six wins have come vs cupcake opponents but so have all of Virginia Tech's. However, the Pirates have been winning in impressive fashion. They are near tops in the nation in both FG percentage defense (.360) and rebounding margin (+21.0). The average margin of victory in their six wins is 28.5 points including a 24 point win over Hampton last time out. Hampton head coach Richard Morgan who served as an assistant at ECU the past four seasons said after the game that this is the most athletes ECU has had since he has been around. ECU head coach Herrion added, "This might have been the best, most complete game that we have played in my five years here, I'm extremely pleased with this team, with this group of kids, right now." This game is being played on the campus of Old Dominion and is being billed as a neutral court matchup. It is hard to picture many fans showing up from either school but Norfolk is 2.5 hours closer to the ECU campus than it is to VT campus.
Score released the 500% on S.F. to their "Round Table" clients. My pal subscribes to Score's Millionaire Club and they will occasionally do this when the suck the previous day. (Bowling Green-200% & VaTech-200%)
