Tuesday’s betting tips: Kobe calls out Lakers' front office

    Who’s hot

NBA: The under is 19-7 in Cleveland’s last 26 home games.

NBA: Miami has won and covered in each of its last six games overall.

NHL: Phoenix has won seven of its last eight.

NHL: Seven of Philadelphia’s last eight games have played over.

NCAAB: Seton Hall is 7-2 against the spread in its last nine home games.

NCAAB: Auburn has covered the number in nine of its last 11 overall.

    Who’s not

NBA: The over is 7-20 in Sacramento’s last 27 road games.

NBA: Detroit is 7-17 against the spread in its last 24 road games.

NHL: Edmonton is 6-21-1 in its 28 games in Calgary.

NHL: Chicago is 3-9 in its last 12 overall.

NCAAB: The over is 2-10 in Michigan’s last 12.

NCAAB: N.C. State is 4-16-1 against the spread in its last 21 home games.

    Key stat

38.4 – The Georgetown Hoyas sit 11th nationally in defensive field goal percentage, allowing opponents to hit just 38.4 percent of their shots. The Hoyas held Providence to just 25.9 percent shooting in last weekend’s 63-53 win and face a Seton Hall offense that ranks 195th in the country at 43.1 percent on Tuesday.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Nikolai Khabibulin, Edmonton Oilers - Khabibulin is expected to be sidelined seven-to-10 days with a sore groin, the team announced on Monday. The veteran netminder exited Sunday's game against the Vancouver Canucks with the injury. Khabibulin allowed two goals on 17 shots in the opening period and was replaced by Devan Dubnyk to start the second. The 39-year-old Russian has posted a 12-16-5 record with two shutouts and 2.60 goals-against average this season. The Oilers visit Calgary Tuesday.

    Game of the day

Kentucky Wildcats at Mississippi State Bulldogs (9.5, 139.5)

    Notable quotable

"Basketball is such an emotional game, you got to be able to have all of yourself in the game and invested in the game. We didn't have that. Pau, it's hard for Pau because of all this trade talk and all this other stuff, it's hard for him to kind of invest himself completely or immerse himself completely into games when he's hearing trade talk every other day. I wish management would come out and either trade him or not trade him." – Kobe Bryant on the ongoing trade rumors surrounding teammate Pau Gasol.

    Notes and tips

Detroit Red Wings starting goaltender Jimmy Howard (broken finger) will be back in the cage Tuesday against the Chicago Blackhawks. Howard owns a 2.03 goals against average with five shutouts this season. The Red Wings are set as +100 road underdogs.

The Florida Gators expect to have guard Mike Rosario back in the lineup Tuesday against Auburn after he missed three games with a hip pointer. Rosario, who averages 7.9 points per game, originally suffered the injury at practice and re-aggravated it Friday. He is still officially listed as questionable.

Carl Edwards was caught from behind in the final race of the season in 2011 to lose the Sprint Cup championship. He'll start 2012 as the driver to catch. Edwards won the pole for next weekend's season-opening Daytona 500, beating out teammate Greg Biffle during qualifying Sunday at Daytona International Speedway. A fast lap of 194.738 mph secured the pole for Edwards, who posted the fastest time in winning the pole since Jeff Gordon in 1999. Biffle turned a fast lap of 194.087 mph to join his Roush Fenway Racing teammate on the front row.

      Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Six of the Toronto Blue Jays' top minor league prospects......

      27) Dickie Joe Thon, SS-- Dad played in big leagues; passed up chance to go to Rice on scholarship. Hampered by blood disorder last year.

      23) Michel Crouse, OF-- Youngest player on Canadian National team LY; his dad played RB in NFLand CFL.

      22) David Cooper, 1B-- Hit .364 in AAA LY, then only .211 in 71 AB in the big leagues. Doesn't have enough power for a 1B.

      9) Drew Hutchison, P-- 16-8, 2.52 in 42 minor league starts, 3-0, 1.20 in three AA starts last season.

      2) Anthony Gose, OF-- Had 70 stolen bases in Eastern League LY.

      1) Travis D'Arnaud, C-- Hit .311 with 21 HRs in pitcher-friendly AA Eastern League; could get to big leagues in 2013.

      *****************

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

      13) Manny Ramirez signed a minor league deal with the A's; I was about to go puke when I heard this, then I heard A's are only in it for $500,000, so if he's washed up or doesn't try, then can cut him with not much of a loss. If he does well, then he's worth a lot more than $500,000.

      12) It is February 21, the exhibition games start next week and baseball still doesn't know for sure how the playoffs are going to work, as far as whether or not there will be a one-game playoff between two Wild Cards in each league. Former used car salesman Selig wants this to happen, but no one else seems to think its practical to do this season.

      11) College basketball officials are over-using replays, trying to get every call exactly right, as far as time left and stuff like that. Lot of the reviews are irrelevant; what did these guys do before replay?

Officials in Seton Hall-Cincinnati game Saturday called a technical foul on Bearcat Yancy Gates after watching the replay; it was ridiculous, and I'm rooting for Seton Hall to win. Over-officiating is becoming the norm.

      10) Raul Ibanez hit 20 HRs LY, 15 in hitter-friendly Citizens Bank Park; now he's in another hitter-friendly park in the Bronx. Ibanez is 7-23 with with two homers in his games in the new Bronx bandbox.

      9) Giants claimed LY that Buster Posey wasn't blocking the plate when he got hurt in a collision; now they've ordered him not to block the plate anymore. San Francisco needs a healthy Posey to contend this season.

      8) Former big league catcher Paul Loduca is a handicapper on TGV, which is old news that I had forgotten about until I saw him on air Monday. I'm told by somebody who plays the horses a lot that he isn't a very good handicapper; he does sound knowledgeable on TV.

      7) Celtics' PG Rajan Rondo got suspended for two games for tossing ball at an official; he missed Monday's loss to Dallas, and won't play in their next game either, Wednesday at Oklahoma City. Tough games to miss.

      6) I had forgotten about Greg Oden; the big guy had another operation on his knees, this time his third microfracture, and his career seems to be in serious doubt. He's played only 82 NBA games after missing half of his one year at Ohio State. Hope he saved the money he's made.

      5) Chiefs signed free agent DB Stanford Routt, who played for Oakland LY and signed a $31.5M deal with the Raiders. He led the NFL LY with 17 penalties committed, but is said to be a good cover corner.

      4) Something to think about next month: In last nine years, Michigan St. has never played in the finals of the Big Dozen tournament; their record in the tournament seminfinals is an unsightly 0-6. Hmmmmm........

      3) Six times this season a Big East home team was favored by 6.5 points in a conference game; all six home favorites lost SU.

      2) Not for nothing, but Steve Novak better be in the 3-point shooting contest on Saturday night; him, Morrow, Kopono, Redick, Nash????

      1) Guess I'm surprised that spring training has started and neither Roy Oswalt or Johnny Damon has signed up with a team yet. Scouts seem to be concerned that Damon isn't working the strike zone as much, because he is more concerned with getting to 3,000 hits than he is with walks.

Game of the day: Kentucky at Mississippi State
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kentucky Wildcats at Mississippi State Bulldogs (9.5, 140)

                THE STORY
: No. 1 Kentucky is aware of the potential trap that awaits it when it visits Mississippi State. The Wildcats are trying to become the third team in 55 years to go undefeated in the Southeastern Conference, but have found the Bulldogs to be a difficult opponent. The two teams have split their last six games and the average margin of victory has been 4.9 points in the last seven meetings.

Both teams are known for their stiff defense; opponents are shooting only 36.2 percent against Kentucky and 42.9 against Miss State. But Kentucky, which has won 18 straight games, has the advantage on offense, averaging 77.8 points with five players in double figures, compared to Miss State’s 72.5 points per game.

THE LINE: Oddsmakers have Mississippi State set as a 9.5-point underdog with a 140-point total.

                TV: 9 p.m. ET. ESPN

ABOUT KENTUCKY (26-1, 12-0 SEC): Hard to believe that all-conference forward Terrence Jones just picked up his first double-double of the season when he had 15 points and 11 rebounds against Ole Miss. Freshman Anthony Davis has elevated himself into discussion to become national player of the year, averaging 13.9 points, 9.7 rebounds and 4.9 blocks. Point guard Marquis Teague is averaging 8.7 assists over the last three games. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist has seen his offensive production drop off, but he’s had seven or more rebounds in six of his last seven games. Doron Lamb is averaging 3.25 3-pointers over the last four games.

ABOUT MISSISSIPPI STATE (19-8, 6-6 SEC): The Bulldogs have lost three straight and dropped out of the top 25 after an embarrassing 10-point loss at Auburn. Arnett Moultrie continues to be the Bulldogs most consistent player, averaging 16.5 points and an SEC-best 10.8 rebounds. Dee Bost will need a good showing against the Wildcats. He’s averaging 15.8 points and 5.0 assists and is now third in school history for 3-pointers and assists. Wendell Lewis started at forward for the first time since Jan. 7 and scored only three points, but had five rebounds in 29 minutes.

                TRENDS:

-The under is 10-1 in Kentucky's last 11 road games.
                - Mississippi State is 2-6 against the spread in its last eight home games.
                - Kentucky is 6-1 against the spread in its last seven.

                TIP-INS:

                1. Kentucky is 9-2 against Miss State when ranked No. 1.
                2. Teague’s assist-turnover ratio of 2.1, better than the 1.3 mark held by John Wall in 2010 and Brandon Knight in 2011 at the same time.
                3. Miss State is 9-0 when Moultrie scores at least 20 points.

Georgetown Hoyas at Seton Hall Pirates (1.5, 121.5)

Expect a display of physical basketball when No. 8 Georgetown travels to Seton Hall in the 94th meeting between the Big East rivals. Georgetown allows only 58.7 points and 38.4 percent from the field, while Seton Hall allows 63.2 points and 43.2 percent from the floor.

The Hoyas have won two straight and are tied for fourth place in the Big East; coach John Thompson’s team is trying to earn a two-round bye for finishing among the top four.

Hollis Thompson is coming off a double-double and is averaging 13.4 points and 5.5 rebounds; he had 14 points against the Pirates last season. He’s combined with Jason Clark (14.8 points, 4.2 rebounds) to provide an effective one-two offensive punch.

Seton Hall is trying to claw its way into the top eight and earn a first-round tournament bye; the Pirates are currently half a game behind West Virginia. Georgetown has dominated the recent series, winning six of the last seven meetings, including 80-75 a year ago.

                  Pick: Hoyas

North Carolina Tar Heels at North Carolina State Wolfpack (6.5, 150)

No. 7 North Carolina looks to keep pace with Duke and Florida State atop the ACC standings as the regular season draws to a close. The Tar Heels lead the nation in rebounding, averaging 46 boards per game and trail only Iona, scoring 82.8 points per game. UNC also ranks in the top 10 in assists and blocks.

The Tar Heels took care of business against Clemson over the weekend, maintaining their share of the conference lead. Harrison Barnes leads UNC and remains second in the ACC scoring race, averaging 18 points per game.

North Carolina State looks to avoid its third straight loss as they close out a three-game set against ACC co-leaders Duke, Florida State and North Carolina.

NC State boasts five players averaging double-figures and also leads the conference from the free throw line, shooting 73.9 percent. Scott Wood paces the Pack from the charity stripe, connecting on 91.9 percent - fourth-best in the nation and tops in the ACC.

                  Pick: Over

NHL Top 5: Trade deadline needs for contending teams
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A couple of interesting swaps have already been completed and there is bound to be many more coming with the NHL trade deadline looming just around the corner on Monday Feb. 27.

Here’s a look at five contending teams that could be active at the deadline.

Stanley Cup futures odds courtesy SportsInteraction.com.

                          New York Rangers (+500)

The Rangers hoped that the addition of Brad Richards would fix their problems on the power play. That hasn’t happened. New York is converting on just 14.1 percent of its opportunities with the man advantage this year. The Blueshirts are in the market for a playmaker and possibly some veteran grit. They have a cupboard stocked full of young talent, but Glen Sather wants to keep as many of the team's prospects as possible - or so he says now.

                          Possible trade targets:

                          Rick Nash, Columbus Blue Jackets
                          Ray Whitney, Phoenix Coyotes
                          Shane Doan, Phoenix Coyotes

                          New Jersey Devils (+2200)

New Jersey has won eight of its last 10 and is quietly moving its way up the Eastern Conference standings. The Devils still don’t get enough pucks to the net and could use some help down the middle. They also never turn down a chance to improve on the blue line and this could be their last kick at the can with Martin Brodeur in goal. They could be active.

                          Possible trade targets:

                          Marek Zidlicky, Minnesota Wild
                          Ales Hemsky, Edmonton Oilers
                          Luke Schenn, Toronto Maple Leafs
                          Mikhail Grabovski, Toronto Maple Leafs

                          Philadelphia Flyers (+1300)

Once again, the Philadelphia Flyers are looking for goaltending help at the deadline. Ilya Bryzgalov may still be the long-term solution, but the Flyers can’t depend on him at the moment and could look to grab a veteran netminder for the stretch run. They already added a stud in Nicklas Grossman to their blue line and are in the mix for Rick Nash, but his price tag is awfully high.

                          Possible trade targets

                          J.S. Giguere, Colorado Avalanche
                          Evgeni Nabokov, New York Islanders
                          Rick Nash, Columbus Blue Jackets
                          Alex Semin, Washington Capitals

                          St. Louis Blues (+1300)

Even though St. Louis is getting healthier with David Perron and Andy McDonald back in the mix, the Blues might make a play for somebody like Zach Parise. He’s a free agent in the offseason and can play a defensive style like Hitchcock employs, while also filling the net. The Blues average just 2.5 goals per game and will jump at an offensive asset as long as they don’t have to mortgage the future. Jeff Carter might be another good option.

                          Possible trade targets:

                          Jeff Carter, Columbus Blue Jackets
                          Zach Parise, New Jersey Devils
                          Paul Gaustad, Buffalo Sabres

                          Nashville Predators (+1800)

The Predators are in a sticky situation. They don’t know what’s going to happen with Ryan Suter or Shea Weber in the offseason, so it’s hard to say whether they’ll be overly active. If Nashville decides to really go for it, the club will look to add some depth up front and possible look for a younger defenseman in case Suter and/or Weber bolt.

                          Possible trade targets:

                          Derek Roy, Buffalo Sabres
                          P.A. Parenteau, New York Islanders
                          Johnny Oduya, Winnipeg Jets
                          Ales Hemsky, Edmonton Oilers

Ice picks: Tuesday's best NHL bets
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Rangers at Pittsburgh Penguins (-115, 5)

The New York Rangers are still rumored to be a frontrunner in the Rick Nash sweepstakes – whether their supporters like it or not.

After he scored late in regulation to tie Sunday’s game at Madison Square Garden the Rangers faithful responded with a “We don’t want you” chant. Derek Stepan scored in overtime to give New York a 4-3 win, marking the club’s seventh win in its last nine games.

"Our team has had a pretty good maturity level all year long, being able to bounce back in tough situations," Stepan told reporters. "It was a good test for us to see if we would bounce back, and I think we did a great job."

The Rangers have excellent chemistry with this club now, so it’ll be interesting to see if they do make any major moves before the deadline.

The Penguins came away with a 4-1 victory when these two teams met last month, but the Rangers have won four of the last five meetings between the clubs.

                            Pick: Rangers

Los Angeles Kings at Phoenix Coyotes (-135, 5)

Rich Nash has also been linked to the Los Angeles Kings, who would be happy to pick up such an offensive threat.

The Kings were blanked for the second game in a row Saturday, falling 1-0 to the Calgary Flames. Los Angeles also lost 1-0 to Phoenix before that, so Tuesday’s game will be huge in the Western Conference standings.

Los Angeles now sits ninth in the conference, two points back of seventh-place Phoenix.

"It's definitely frustrating. I think it's been frustrating all year for all the players in here," Kings captain Dustin Brown said. "The lack of scoring. Tonight we had some really good chances.”

Another poor offensive showing could force the Kings to make a move. They can’t afford to drop any further in the standings.

                            Pick: Under

Detroit Pistons at Cleveland Cavaliers (-1.5, 191)

The young Cavaliers are tough to get a read on from one game to the next, but with Kyrie Irving leading the way, their future looks bright.

The Cavaliers shot just 36 percent on Sunday and still came away with a 93-92 victory when Irving hit a pair of free throws in the final second of play.

"We got a little lucky tonight, that's all I can say," coach Byron Scott told reporters. "I didn't think we played the way we are capable of playing. I thought we were kind of messing around in the first half. [The Kings] had a lot of confidence they could win the game. We just tried to turn it on. You just can't turn it on and off."

Irving finished with 21 points, but hit only eight of his 23 attempts from the floor while Cleveland dropped the cash for the third time in four games.

Meanwhile, Detroit has covered in each of its last four.

                              Pick: Pistons

Sacramento Kings at Miami Heat (-14, 203.5)

Strangely enough, it seems as though the Miami Heat are happy to share the NBA spotlight these days.

With the Jeremy Lin buzz and a hectic schedule providing plenty of plotlines, the Heat have quietly won six games in a row, both straight up and against the spread.

"We don't know if people get bored (with Miami winning) or not," LeBron James told reporters. "We just know there's a lot more going on. I guess there's other, better story lines right now going on in the league, so we can go out and just play the game and just try to do it at a high level. Let everybody else get the headlines right now and just play Miami Heat basketball."

Clearly, this team has come a long way since The Decision. The Heat have won each of the last six by at least 12 points, which has allowed them to sit James and the starters regularly in the fourth quarter.

That rest is going to help them out a lot in the second half of the season.

                              Pick: Heat
