Thursday’s betting tips: Sliding Blackhawks deny rumors

    Who’s hot

NBA: Portland is 4-1 against the spread in its last five meetings with the L.A. Clippers.

NBA: The under is 9-4-1 in Indiana’s last 14 home games.

NHL: The New York Rangers are 18-6 in its last 24 home games.

NHL: The over is 23-10 in Tampa Bay’s last 33.

NCAAB: Michigan State has covered the number in six straight home games.

NCAAB: The over is 10-2 in the last 12 meetings between Duke and NC State.

    Who’s not

NBA: New Jersey is 1-8 against the spread in its last nine meetings with Indiana.

NBA: Chicago is 1-4 against the spread in its last five home games.

NHL: Chicago has lost nine straight overall and 11 consecutive road games.

NHL: Calgary is 6-14 in its last 20 games as an underdog.

NCAAB: Virginia Tech is 1-10 against the spread in its last 11.

NCAAB: Santa Clara is 3-10 against the number in its last 13 overall.

    Key stat

18.2 – The N.C. State Wolfpack have dropped 13 consecutive games at Cameron Indoor Stadium against Duke, losing by an average of 18.2 points per game. The Wolfpack has won three of its last five, but has covered just once over that span. N.C. State is a 10-point underdog Thursday.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Danny Granger, Indiana Pacers – Granger sprained his left ankle in Tuesday’s game and didn’t play in Wednesday’s contest against the Cavs. He’s considered questionable for Thursday’s game, when the Pacers finish off this stretch of three games in three nights. Granger leads the team averaging 18.0 points per game.

    Game of the day

Wisconsin Badgers at Michigan State Spartans (-6, 114)

    Notable quotable

"We're not focused on goaltending. We're really not. I know there's a lot of talk about that, but internally, we have to focus on the guys we have, and turning it around from within." – Chicago Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman on the rumors that the team is looking for goaltending help ahead of the trade deadline. The Blackhawks have a collective 4.22 goals against average during their nine-game losing skid with Ray Emery and Corey Crawford splitting time between the pipes. The Hawks have yet to name a starting goalie for Thursday’s road game against the Rangers. Chicago is set as a +145 underdog.

    Notes and tips

Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge (ankle) is considered questionable for Thursday's game against the L.A. Clippers. Aldridge, who landed on Trevor Booker's foot Tuesday, was helped off the floor and taken to the locker room less than two minutes into the first quarter. Initial X-rays on his ankle came back negative although he is expected to undergo additional tests. The second overall pick of the 2006 draft, Aldridge entered the game averaging 23.3 points and 8.6 rebounds for Portland.

Rumors are beginning to heat up with the NHL trade deadline fast approaching. The Columbus Blue Jackets are in talks with a number of teams about moving captain Rick Nash. Some of the major players are said to be the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers. Meanwhile, Minnesota Wild defenseman Marek Zidlicky has reportedly waived his no-trade clause to join the New Jersey Devils. However, no deal was officially in place as of Wednesday evening.

Tennessee junior forward Kenny Hill was suspended from the team indefinitely. Volunteers coach Cuonzo Martin said the punishment was due to “conduct detrimental to the team.” Hill has started 16 of 25 games this season for Tennessee (13-12, 5-5 SEC), averaging 6.2 points and 4.5 rebounds. His suspension went into effect before Wednesday's game against Arkansas.

      Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Celtics lost at home to Detroit; they might have trouble making it to the playoffs, with New York playing so well, they figure to move into the #7 slot ahead of the C's. Boston has an older team.

-- Spurs are 5-0 on their current road trip, which will span 7,941 miles and nine games in all. There's a rodeo in their home arena.

-- SMU lost 47-28 at home to a mediocre UAB team; Mustangs made 8 of 43 from the floor. Games like that get coaches fired.

-- Former Tennessee QB Tee Martin, who led Vols to a national title the year after Peyton Manning graduated, is new WR coach at USC.

-- A producer for CNN won $1M in a scratch-off lottery game, three months after she won $100K in a similar game. Wonder if she's single?

-- Boise State's Derrick Marks went coast-to-coast and scored winning hoop with less than a second left- Boise nipped Colorado State 70-69.

      **************

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.........

      13) I’m no economist, but how in the name of Trump did the Mets lose $120M in two years, with a brand-new stadium? Mayor Bloomberg should buy the team, rid NYC of the hideous Wilpons, then flip the team for a profit to Mark Cuban or some other billionaire. He’d be a freakin’ hero. The Wilpons are a Met fan's worst nightmare.

      12) If Colts’ owner Jim Irsay came right out and said, “It makes no financial sense to give Peyton Manning his $28M bonus, considering we have no idea whether he can still play, so unless he opts to pass on this bonus, we have to release him” who would say he is wrong? It will be good business if they do this. Everyone knows that, not that everyone likes the idea of Manning finishing his career somewhere else, or retiring.

      11) Ron Jaworski is out of the Monday Night Football booth, but has signed on for five more years at ESPN, in what sounds like a Merril Hoge-type role. Sounds like ESPN thinks they have the next John Madden in Jon Gruden, so they want to get him maximum exposure, and so a 3-man booth is no longer needed. Jaws is a good guy; was lucky enough to meet him once. Hope he’s at peace with this move.

      10) 58-year old Dan McCarney, football coach at North Texas, suffered a stroke over the weekend; sounds like he is doing OK, but that’s awful young for something like that to happen. Feel better, coach.......

      9) If you go see UL-Lafayette play basketball, you get your money’s worth; five of their last 12 games went to OT, with Ragin’ Cajuns winning four of those five games.

      8) What do football coaches do in the offseason? They study football. With North Carolina/Clemson switching to spread offenses next year, Virginia Tech defensive guru Bud Foster is in Columbia, MO this week, learning from Mizzou coaches about defending the spread. Coaching is like handicapping; you can't ever stop learning.

      7) Penn State football coach Bill O’Brien came fairly cheap, with a base salary of $950,000 and maximum incentives of another $200,000. For a program with Penn State’s revenues, that’s pocket change. O’Brien might be the lowest-paid coach in the Big Dozen.

      6) There is a funny story out there this week about a little girl in Kansas who is in kindergarten who wouldn’t do her classwork because the teacher wanted her to color in a Kansas Jayhawk, and both the girl’s parents went to Kansas State, so the little girl refused. A parent/teacher conference ensued. College loyalties run very deep with some people.

      5) Arizona Cardinals haven’t drafted an offensive lineman before the 5th round since 2007; maybe if they did that, their QBs wouldn’t get hit so much, and Larry Fitzgerald would have more time to get open. .

      4) Murray State won fairly easily at SE Missouri tonight, their second straight win since losing to Tennessee State. Seems like losing might have relaxed them, taking lot of the scrutiny and pressure away. Racers also clinched the OVC regular season title, their third in a row.

      3) Sacramento-Knicks game was so hideous tonight that the announcers had a fairly lengthy discussion on why elephants have long memories. I wish I was making that up, but it was more interesting than the game.

      2) Best wishes to Tony Gwynn after he underwent a 14-hour operation to remove a cancerous tumor from his jaw. 14 hours is a long time to be under the knife. If you use smokeless tobacco, please stop.

      1) Weird schedule for the Toronto Raptors, who in the last week, hosted the Celtics-Lakers-Knicks-Spurs, four of their most attractive home tilts. Raptors beat Boston, then lost three tough games in a row.

Most improved MLB teams heading into the 2012 season

Andrew Friedman doesn’t dream big. The Executive Vice President of the Tampa Bay Rays called the club’s offseason a “dream scenario.”

No, the small market Rays didn’t trade for Troy Tulowitzki, Joey Votto or Babe Ruth’s great, great grandson, and they didn’t buy Homer Simpson’s lightning-powered “Wonder Bat” on e-Bay. Friedman is patting himself on the back because he signed Jose Molina to share catching duties with Jose Lobaton.

OK, there’s no reason to get down on the Rays. They held onto James Shields and B.J. Upton, and they’ll get full seasons from stud prospects Desmond Jennings and Matt Moore.

Tampa Bay will be good to great again, but a squad coming off a 91-win season isn’t going to be the most improved team in 2012.

Here’s a look at four clubs we see as the most improved heading into the new campaign:

        Los Angeles Angels

        2011 record: 86-76

Odds to win the World Series: +880

        Season win total: 89.5

After years of flirting with big-name ball players, the Angels finally pulled the trigger and signed the best position player, and best pitcher on the free agent market.

Albert Pujols legitimizes a lineup that was borderline Triple-A. Throw in a hopefully healthy Kendry Morales (don’t forget this guy hit 34 homers in 2009) and suddenly you have a batting order with some pop.

C.J. Wilson was Texas’ ace but he’ll probably be L.A.’s No. 3 starter behind Jered Weaver and Dan Haren. Having Ervin Santana as your No. 4 starter qualifies as an embarrassment of pitching riches in my books.

        Miami Marlins

        2011 record: 72-90

Odds to win the World Series: +2,000

        Season win total: 82.5

A new stadium, a new manager, a new city name and a new budget has baseball fans excited (maybe that's not the right word. Let’s go with mildly roused) in South Beach.

The Marlins threw cash at Jose Reyes, Mark Buerhle, and Heath Bell nabbing the trio faster than you can say “nouveau riche”. We assume Hanley Ramirez will have a bounce back year, Josh Johnson will pitch a full season and young slugger Mike Stanton will continue to develop.

Put that all together and you might have enough to overtake the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League East.

        Washington Nationals

        2011 record: 80-81

Odds to win the World Series: +3,500

        Season win total: 80.5

The Nationals play in the same division as the Phillies, Marlins and Braves but we still see them taking a major step forward this season. Pitching is the reason for all the optimism in the nation's capital. Washington traded for started Gio Gonzalez, who many viewed as the most talented pitcher on Oakland's staff a season ago, and signed free agent reliever Brad Lidge.

Those two hurlers are just the cherries on top of the ice cream sundae for Nats backers. Stephen Strasburg enters camp a year and a half removed from Tommy John surgery and looks to build off the five late-season starts he made in 2011. If Strasburg can get back to the level he displayed in 2010, Washington's rotation will be as good as anybody's in the bigs.

The Nats' batting order is modest at best but if Bryce Harper makes the big league team and Ryan Zimmerman can stay healthy, there should be enough runs scored on most nights with this pitching staff.

        Toronto Blue Jays

        2011 record: 81-81

Odds to win the World Series: +4,200

        Season win total: 81

The Jays were rumored to be in the mix for Prince Fielder and Yu Darvish, but just because they swung and missed on both players doesn't mean they didn't have a productive offseason. Toronto's bullpen converted just 33 of 58 save opportunities in 2011 thanks to disappointing seasons from Jon Rauch.

General manager Alex Anthopoulos identified the problem and found relievers capable of shutting the door in the eighth and ninth innings. It looks like former Red closer Francisco Cordero will be the setup man while former White Sox reliever Sergio Santos will fill the role of the closer. That's a huge upgrade over last year's pairing of Rauch and Frank Francisco.

Game of the day: Wisconsin at Michigan State
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wisconsin Badgers at Michigan State Spartans (-6, 110)

                  THE STORY
: When No. 17 Wisconsin and No. 8 Michigan State last met on Jan. 3, it produced one of the most controversial conclusions to a game this season. Considering the level both teams are playing at since, another dramatic ending could be in store.

The Badgers - who lost to the Spartans last month when Ryan Evans’ overtime 3-pointer was disallowed when officials discovered the stadium clock was two-tenths of a second behind the game clock, which had expired – have rebounded to go 7-2 since that game.

Michigan State is 15-0 at home this season and flying high after snapping No. 6 Ohio State’s 39-game home winning streak on Saturday.

                  TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT WISCONSIN (19-6, 8-4 Big Ten, 13-9 ATS): The Badgers’ top-scoring defense (50.3 points per game), along with their deliberate offensive style and strong foul shooting, has allowed them to go 19-0 in games when leading or tied with five minutes remaining and 5-1 in road conference games.

Wisconsin also commits just 8.8 turnovers per game – tied for the lowest mark in the nation. The Badgers lead the country in 3-point field goal defense (26.7 percent) and are second in field goal percentage defense (36.8).

Since coach Bo Ryan took over prior to the 2001-02 season, the team is 25-2 with six days of rest in between games, including 11 straight victories.

ABOUT MICHIGAN STATE (20-5, 9-3 Big Ten, 15-7 ATS): The Spartans are holding opponents to 37.4 percent shooting from the field - the lowest total in the Tom Izzo era – and enjoy the third-best rebounding margin in the country (plus 10.2).

Forward Draymond Green has led the team in rebounding in 20 of their 25 games, scoring in 11 and assists in seven.

While Wisconsin sets the standard in defending the 3-pointer for the season, Michigan State has defended it better than the Badgers in Big Ten play, allowing opponents to shoot 27.9 percent behind the arc.

                  TRENDS:

                  * Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings in Michigan St.
                  * Home team is 11-4 ATS in the last 15 meetings.
                  * Badgers are 1-5 ATS in the last six meetings in Michigan St.

                  TIP-INS:

                  1. The Spartans hold a 70-60 advantage in this series and have not lost to the Badgers in East Lansing since 2004.

                  2. In his last four meetings against Michigan State, Wisconsin guard Jordan Taylor has averaged 24.3 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.3 assists, including a season-high 28 points in the Jan. 3 contest.

                  3. Green needs two blocked shots and one steal to move into sole possession of second and fifth, respectively, on the Spartans’ all-time lists in each category.

North Carolina State Wolfpack at Duke Blue Devils (-10, 152)

Duke and North Carolina State rank first and second, respectively, in the ACC in field goal percentage and 3-point percentage. That offense has led the fourth-ranked Blue Devils into a fight for first place in the conference, while the Wolfpack lurks one game behind.

In order to close that gap, North Carolina State is going to have to snap a 13-game losing streak at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke has dominated the series in recent years, taking five of the last six straight up, the the clubs have split those games 3-3 against the spread.

The Blue Devils are coming off one of their better weeks of the season and may have found a stronger inside game to go along with its perimeter strength. Miles and Mason Plumlee each recorded a double-double in Saturday’s 73-55 victory over Maryland, with Miles’ 22 rebounds marking the highest total in coach Mike Krzyzewski’s 37-year career.

Combined with the outside quartet of Austin Rivers, Seth Curry, Andre Dawkins and Ryan Kelly, Duke is becoming more balanced offensively as the season wears on.

                    Pick: Over

Boston College Eagles at Maryland Terrapins (-9, N/A)

Maryland still has its eyes on reaching the NCAA Tournament, so the Terrapins can’t afford to slip up against one of the ACC’s bottom feeders.

Maryland has lost three of four outright, but is 11-3 at home and 4-1 against the spread in its last five overall. The Terps need to build some momentum for a schedule that features four teams with RPI rankings in the top 35 among the final six games.

Boston College appeared ready to turn the corner with a win over nationally ranked Florida State, but let Virginia Tech off the hook in overtime. The Eagles have lost seven of their last eight and haven’t won an ACC road game.

Still, they have covered the number in four straight.

The Eagles start four freshmen and transfer guard Matt Humphrey, who leads the team with 10.4 points per game. Boston College lives and dies by the 3-pointer as no team in the ACC has tried more.

The Eagles have made 34.1 percent from beyond the arc and the team’s goal is to make 10 treys per game. Freshman Ryan Anderson (9.9 points, 6.8 rebounds) is starting to develop his inside-outside game and Dennis Clifford, a 7-foot center who averages 9.2 points, has shown some nice moves around the basket.

                    Pick: Eagles

Winnipeg Jets at Minnesota Wild (-120, 5)

If you haven’t noticed, the honeymoon is most certainly over for the Winnipeg Jets.

They got by earlier this season with a great home record while trying to stay competitive on their grueling road schedule that comes with the territory when playing out of the Eastern Conference.

But coach Claude Noel has had just about enough of his team’s inconsistent play.

"Am I discouraged? How do I look?" Noel told reporters after Tuesday’s 3-1 home loss to the New York Islanders. "I'm not real happy. I'm going to wake up and tomorrow's another day. I'll be relentless in my pursuit to get us where we want to go. These are hard moments because you have emotion that you're trying to keep under control."

The Jets wasted a chance to put some distance between them and the Islanders in the standings, so you have to believe they’ll put out a better effort in Minnesota.

Wild captain Mikko Koivu is back, but this looks like another lost year after Minnesota’s strong start.

                              Pick: Jets

Phoenix Coyotes at Los Angeles Kings (-135, 5)

Heading into Wednesday’s action, the eighth-place Coyotes trailed the Los Angeles Kings by two points in the Western Conference, while Calgary, Colorado and Dallas were on the outside of the playoff picture looking in.

This is going to be a race that could easily come down to the last day of the season and you can expect the Coyotes and Kings to be in the middle of it.

No matter how it shakes down in the end, the Coyotes are the value bet Thursday. They limited the high-powered Canucks to just 22 shots on goal in a 2-1 shutout loss the last time they took the ice and have given up two or fewer goals in six of their last eight – winning six times over that stretch.

"We came up a point short," Phoenix coach Dave Tippett told reporters about the loss to Vancouver. "It was a solid road game. We didn't give up a ton of chances. We hung around the game, we just didn't get the two points. We have to be solid if we want to win, and tonight we were solid."

After backup Jason LaBarbera kept the Coyotes in the game versus the Canucks, expect starter Mike Smith to be back in the cage against Los Angeles.

                              Pick: Coyotes
