Hockey Night In Canada: NHL betting preview
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Montreal Canadiens at Toronto Maple Leafs (-144, 5.5)

It’s shaping up as a fight to the finish for the Maple Leafs, who were clinging to the eighth and final Eastern Conference playoff spot as play began Friday. For the Canadiens, it’s a different story. But with each new chapter of this great rivalry, there is an opportunity to be a spoiler.

      Not-so-great Scott

It’s tough to blame any one player for Montreal’s struggles, but it’s hard not to look Scott Gomez’s way -- if not point the finger directly at him. Would you believe the former Ranger and Devil scored for the first time this season in the Canadiens’ 4-2 win over the Islanders Thursday?

Max Pacioretty had a hat trick in that game and it was Montreal’s third win in a row. But the story was Gomez, who had only seven assists in his 24 games leading up to the tilt on Long Island.

He’s only 32 and he has two Stanley Cup titles with New Jersey, but it’s tough to think that Montreal can count on much more offense from him the rest of the way.

      Short-handed success

Toronto ran into a desperate Philadelphia team Thursday night, and the Flyers took out some frustration before escaping with a 4-3 win. But the Maple Leafs were able to continue a penalty-killing run for the ages.

Toronto killed off all four short-handed situations against the Flyers, pushing its streak to 28 straight kills. That covers 17 games and is the league’s longest streak in more than four decades. The Blackhawks produced a run of 19 games without allowing a power-play goal in 1969-70.

These Maple Leafs may be on the verge of history.

      Paying the Price

When you're fighting for every point at the bottom of the standings, feverishly trying to get close to the postseason, you have to rely on your workhorses. And for Montreal, that means leaning on goaltender Carey Price. The All-Star has been in net for all three wins on this streak, and made 31 saves against the Islanders Thursday.

As for his numbers overall, they are good but they are also weakened by the team he's on. He enters Saturday's action at 20-19-8, with a .916 save percentage, and a 2.36 GAA. He has three shutouts.

In his last effort versus the Maple Leafs he was sharp, making 32 saves en route to a 3-1 win on Jan. 21.

      History

Toronto has won two of three meetings this season, including a 2-0 blanking in the first chapter on Oct. 6. Seven of the last nine installments of this rivalry have gone under. The Canadiens have won five of their last eight games overall.

Vancouver Canucks at Calgary Flames (127, 5)

The Western Conference playoff ladder is a jumbled mess at the bottom with six teams battling for two playoff spots. And on Friday afternoon, just five points separated them all. The Flames are one of those teams.

      Enforcers on the mend

It's not going to mean much in the scoring category, but for toughness purposes and potential momentum-changing moments, keep an eye on Vancouver's grinders headed into Saturday’s game.

Canucks forward Dale Weise was scratched from Thursday's 5-2 win over Minnesota with a foot injury and defenseman Keith Ballard was scratched with a neck injury.

Weise has just three goals and six points, but has amassed 74 minutes in penalties. Ballard has just one goal and seven points, but has 64 penalty minutes.

Their absence didn't prevent Vancouver from posting a fighting major and two 10-minute misconducts in the third period versus the Wild.

      Holy Olli

The Flames made a lot of fans in Calgary scratch their heads when they reacquired veteran forward Olli Jokinen last season. But he's made people forget the bad times. He scored the Flames' lone goal in a 2-1 overtime loss at Phoenix Thursday night.

Jokinen now has 17 goals and 46 points. He's flashed some grit, as well, posting 40 penalty minutes. And he's even inching closer to the plus world on a tough team to do so. Entering Saturday's action, he's just a minus-2.

And fueled by a hat trick Feb. 8 at San Jose, Jokinen has five goals and seven points in his last four games.

      Double trouble

When you're winning, everyone seems to get along and be happy with their playing time. That sure seems to be the case for Vancouver in net these days.

Both Roberto Luongo and Cory Schneider are making the most of their minutes and the team is inching closer to the No. 1 overall spot in the NHL.

Schneider picked up the win versus Minnesota and is now 12-5-0 with a .928 save percentage, a 2.26 GAA, and two shutouts. Luongo, likely to get the start in Calgary, has more games and more wins, but the other numbers a very similar. He's 22-10-5, with a .920 save percentage, a 2.40 GAA and also a pair of shutouts.

There are good goaltending tandems throughout the league, but Vancouver could put its duo up against anyone.

      History

Vancouver has won five of the last six meetings, but Calgary won the last one, 3-1 at home on Dec. 23. Five of the last seven games between these two have gone over, including Vancouver's 5-1 win on Dec. 4. The surging Canucks have won six of their last seven overall.

Ice picks: Saturday's best NHL bets
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Kings at New York Islanders (105, 5)

Even after Thursday’s 4-2 home loss to Montreal, the last-place Islanders are 6-2-2 in their last 10 games and 11-6-2 in their past 19.

L.A., meanwhile, continues to struggle offensively. The Kings have scored one or zero goals six times in their last 10 games. They have scored an NHL-low 119 goals.

"It's more of the same for us," Dustin Brown said after Thursday’s 3-1 loss at Florida. "We've got to find ways to score more goals."

Coach Darryl Sutter pulled goalie Jonathan Quick after two periods but did not offer a specific reason why.

"No big deal, just something different," Sutter said.

The Kings are 1-3 on this six-game road trip, and 1-4 in their last five games playing on one day’s rest.

        Pick: Islanders

Columbus Blue Jackets at Minnesota Wild (-160, 5)

Woeful Columbus lost defenseman Marc Methot to a broken jaw in Thursday’s loss to Dallas. Interim coach Todd Richards says defensemen James Wisniewski and Nikita Nikitin won’t return from their injuries until next week.

The Blue Jackets prevailed 3-1 when these teams met Tuesday in Columbus, but the previous four meetings all produced at least six goals.

The Wild just got back captain Mikko Koivu, who is second on the team with 33 points. He returned to the lineup Thursday after missing eight games with an injured left shoulder.

The over is 7-0 in the Wild’s last seven home games.

        Pick: Over

Pick 'n' roll: Saturday's best NBA bets
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Denver Nuggets at Indiana Pacers (-3, 200)

Denver isn’t guarding anyone these days. The Nuggets have lost five straight, the latest a 109-101 home loss to Golden State in which the Warriors shot 51.9 percent overall and made 13 of 25 3-pointers.

The “D” was so non-existent that during the game, a fan tweeted: “Enver Nuggets!”

Indiana ranked ninth in 3-point shooting (37.1 percent) entering Friday’s visit to Memphis.

The last three times Indiana faced Denver, the teams combined for at least 228 points. The over is 6-2 in the last eight Pacers-Nuggets games, and 7-2 in Denver’s last nine road games.

                Pick: Over

Phoenix Suns at Sacramento Kings (-2.5, 196.5)

The Kings surprised the Thunder on Thursday thanks to clutch shooting from Marcus Thornton, who buried back-to-back 3-pointers with less than three minutes left.

"Players have the ability to lock into a moment, to be in a zone, to make a shot that has to go down,” coach Ketih Smart said of Thornton, who began 3 of 12 but made 3 of his last 4 shots. “And he has the ability to do that."

Sacramento has won four of five. In three of those wins, the Kings trailed by at least seven points in the second half. Sacramento is a young team that feeds off its home crowd.

Phoenix went the final six minutes of Thursday’s home loss to Houston with one field goal, by Steve Nash. The Suns were destroyed on the boards, and five Rockets reserves scored in double figures.

The Kings are 7-0 ATS in their last seven games.

                Pick: Kings
