Friday’s betting tips: Cavaliers keep covering

    Who’s hot

NBA: Cleveland has covered in four of its last five overall and in five of its last six road games.

NBA: Dallas is 8-3 against the number in its last 11 home games.

NHL: The under is 7-1-1 in Ottawa’s last nine.

NHL: St. Louis is 21-6 in its last 27 home games.

NCAAB: Rider is 9-1-1 against the spread in its last 11 overall.

    Who’s not

NBA: Miami is 1-6 against the spread in its last seven overall.

NBA: New Jersey is 3-13 against the spread in its last 16 vs. Minnesota.

NHL: Columbus has lost six straight.

NHL: Calgary is 8-20 in its last 28 meetings with Chicago.

NCAAB: The over is 1-5 in Harvard’s last six.

    Key stat

23 – The No. 23 Harvard Crimson have won 23 straight games at home heading into Friday’s date with Cornell. The last time the Crimson lost at home was back on Feb. 19, 2010. However, they are just 1-3 against the spread at home this season. Oddsmakers have Harvard set as a 15.5-point favorite Friday.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Rajon Rondo, Boston Celtics – Rondo is again listed as questionable for Friday’s game against the New York Knicks. Rondo hasn’t played since hurting his wrist on Jan. 18, but coach Doc Rivers said Thursday that he hopes the shifty point guard will play Friday. “Without him,” Rivers said, “you’re pretty basic offensively, and I think you’re very easy to guard down the stretch of games. I think that’s hurt us.”

    Game of the day

    Miami Heat at Philadelphia 76ers (2, 193)

    Notable quotable

“He did react to pressure that didn’t exist, and he was just throwing the ball places where there wasn’t even a receiver there. Imagine us getting there even faster and actually doing our jobs and getting hits on him.” – New York Giants defensive lineman Jason Pierre-Paul on how Tom Brady reacted to pressure in the Week 9 meeting between the two teams.

    Notes and tips

The Columbus Blue Jackets have activated Jeff Carter from injured reserve and he’s expected to play Friday against Anaheim. Carter, who has heard his name in some trade rumors recently as the trade deadline nears, suffered a separated shoulder on Jan. 8. Despite missing 20 games due to injury this year, he leads the team in power play goals (five) and sits second in total goals (10). The Blue Jackets are set as big +190 underdogs.

According to a report in the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the Indiana Pacers could be one of the leading candidates to land center Chris Kaman. The Pacers are said to be looking someone to back up Roy Hibbert. Kaman is in the final year of his contract with the New Orleans Hornets and has garnered some interest from a few different teams. The 7-foot center is averaging 9.2 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.

Ryan Palmer shot a 7-under-par 64 to move atop the leaderboard before play was suspended in the first round of the Phoenix Open at Scottsdale, Ariz. More than 40 players were still on the course when play was halted due to darkness Thursday. The opening round started an hour late due to a frost delay. Palmer was 8-under through his first 15 holes before his lone bogey left him one shot ahead of Webb Simpson, who had six birdies in a seven-hole stretch in his round of 65. Simpson is the tourney favorite at +500 while Palmer sits at +1600.

      Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Wild game out west in Berkeley, where Cal star Gutierrez almost got into a scuffle with an Arizona assistant coach. Down 22-8 at one point, Arizona stormed back to upset the Cal Bears, 78-74.

-- Manhattan is now 17-7 this season, a great turnaround after it went 17-45 the last two seasons combined.

-- Tennessee Tech's Kevin Murphy scored 33 points in a 94-88 win at Austin Peay, giving him 83 points in his last two games.

-- South Dakota State beat Oral Roberts 75-60, handing the Titan their first Summit League loss after 12 wins.

-- BYU beat Gonzaaga 83-73, a surprisingly easy win for the Cougars.

-- UCLA is now 0-5 in Pac-12 games outside of LA; Bruins blew their 10-point lead late, lost by a hoop in a sloppy game at Washington.

      ***************

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.........

      13) If your favorite team is playing in the Super Bowl, this is one damn exciting week; the anticipation builds as Sunday slowly approaches, as the outcome of a six-month long season boils down to one last 3-hour game. But if your team got beat in the playoffs (or worse yet, went, say, 2-14) this week is intolerable, filled with hype and an oversaturation of media. Either way, Sunday night can’t get here soon enough.

      12) The week of buildup is especially hideous when the two teams are playing that have been here before; the chance of some ridiculous mistake (say, a starting DB getting caught with a transvestite hooker or getting into a bar brawl the night before the game) happening are far less.

Having the game in Indianapolis rather than New Orleans/Miami lessen the chances of nightclub-related hijinks. In short, this must be a great place for a Super Bowl if you’re one of the coaches. Way fewer worries.

      11) David Woodley-Rex Grossman-Tony Eason and Neil O’Donnell all started a Super Bowl. Dan Fouts never did. Go figure.

      10) Read an interesting piece this week showing the numerical parallel between the careers of Hall of Famer Marv Levy and Tom Coughlin- their numbers are almost identical, other than Levy has been in two more Super Bowls, but Coughlin has won one. Makes it look good for the Giant coach being inducted in Canton some day.

      9) Bill Parcells and Mike Holmgren are the only head coaches to win a Super Bowl, then get back to the Super Bowl coaching another team; neither won with the second team. Dick Vermeil/Dan Reeves lost Super Bowls, then returned with different teams; Reeves lost with his second team too, but Vermeil won Super Bowl XXXIV with the Rams.

      8) Two years from now, the Super Bowl is in Swamp Stadium, in New Jersey. In February. At night. An unspeakably dumb idea.

How would you like to shell out over $1,000 for a ticket to a game on a February night in New Jersey? If it was hockey, you could understand the cold, but not football. The championship game should be played in optimum conditions, if at all possible.

      7) Lot of media carped about the Super Bowl being in Jacksonville, but remember this about Jacksonville; its in freakin’ Florida, albeit north Florida. Given a choice between being in northern New Jersey and northern Florida at night in February, the choice should always be Florida.

      6) Four teams have never played in a Super Bowl: Browns-Texans-Jaguars-Lions. Three of those four are expansion teams. The other was once run by Matt Millen.

      5) Jets/Chiefs won Super Bowls III and IV; neither has been back since. None of the players in Sunday’s game were alive when Hank Stram’s Chiefs upset Minnesota in Super Bowl IV.

      4) Rather than putting a Super Bowl in London, NFL should consider putting the game in Las Vegas; who has done for the popularity of pro football than gamblers? The Las Vegas Hotel’s PDF file on gambling propositions for Sunday’s game is 44 freakin’ pages. This would work.

      3) In a perfect world, where I decided everything, four cities would rotate hosting the Super Bowl, with a “wild card” city getting in there every fifth year. The four regulars would be Miami-San Diego-New Orleans and Tampa. The wild card cities would be anywhere with warm weather or a dome, with Las Vegas thrown in there once.

      2) 11 years ago, a Super Bowl ticket was $350; now, tickets are over $1,000. The NFL sold 7,500 tickets to Media Day this year. Amazing.

      1) The best Super Bowl-related commercial ever was after the Saints won; don’t even remember what it was for, but there was video of a house party with all Saints fans as New Orleans picked off that last Peyton Manning pass and ran it in for the clinching TD.

No narrator, just people hugging. Total joy and chaos. Good stuff.

Someone is going to feel like that Sunday night, but there is no joy like that feeling the first time you win a title. That’s part of what made the Saints’ title so special, having been a doormat for years and years before becoming World Champs. There's nothing like it.

NFL Total Bias: Super Bowl XLVI's over/under pick
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I’ve never been much of a numbers guy.

Considering my chosen profession, that shouldn’t be a surprise to you. I needed a tutor to get through Grade 10 academic math, partly due to sheer laziness and partly due to sheer terror of an = sign.

The funny thing about it is that I never thought my issue carried over to sports.

I can still tell you more Wayne Gretzky numbers than you care to hear or what Bo Jackson’s career slugging percentage was (.474). I drooled all over myself when Randy Moss averaged 19 yards per catch and scored 17 touchdowns as a rookie back in ’98. I can convert odds and calculate units won/lost in my sleep.

For a stats junkie, these two weeks leading up to the Super Bowl should be gift from the football Gods, but for me it never plays out like that.

Maybe it’s all the Roman numerals.

More likely, though, is that it’s just a little overwhelming. Numbers do funny things to me when I’m mulling them about for too long.

I remember being hunched over one of those terrible classroom desks, completely stuck on one math problem during a quiz. I’d be sweating bullets, knowing that once this problem got in my head, I might as well sign my name and hand my paper in then because I was already cooked.

I guess I haven’t changed much since then.

In all honesty, this 54-point total listed for Sunday’s game has me bumbling around like John Nash in "A Beautiful Mind."

When the line was initially released, I wished I could have written this column that night to get in on the under when some shops had totals as high as 56.5 on the board. Wise advice from seasoned oddsmakers years ago had me immediately thinking that when a game’s this big, bettors aren’t hoping for field goals.

But you can’t base your pick strictly on an inflated Super Bowl total – which this most certainly is. I’ve gone back and forth on my pick a few times, thinking about Brady and Eli going shot-for-shot in an end zone orgy and whether New England’s defense can manage to pull its own weight for a mere 60 minutes.

Like you, I’m still worried about Ron Gronkowski’s ankle and I can’t help but wonder if the clock is going to strike 12 at some point for these surging Giants.

But whether you’re talking about the biggest football game in the world or a 10th grade math exam, in the end it always comes back to preparation, which is why coaching (or tutors) are so important.

Ron Borges has a great piece about the similarities between Bill Belichick and Tom Coughlin in Wednesday’s Boston Herald.

The column’s real strength is its quotes from players who have been coached by both Belichick and Coughlin over the years (of course, they coached together from 1988-90 in New York). It’s pretty evident that above everything else, the one thing that ties the two together is attention to detail.

“When I was the secondary coach and Tom was the receivers coach at the Giants,” Belichick said at Tuesday’s press conference, “we worked against each other daily and we also had great rapport off the field of helping each other out, talking about the different techniques and players of our upcoming opponents and suggestions on how to cover them or run routes — helping each other out on things like that as well as working with each other on the practice field.

“He’s shared things with me and I’ve shared things with him. That’s part of a friendship; that’s part of a mutual respect that we have.”

That’s why as everybody breaks drown Brady vs. Manning and New York’s defensive line against New England’s pass defense, I just keep coming back to Belichick vs. Coughlin.

With two weeks to prepare for this game and all the history between these two coaches, I just can’t see this being a blowout for either team. And as strong as both offenses are, Belichick and Coughlin always seem to find a way of taking away their opposition’s greatest weapons.

That’s what I think keeps this game under the total as the Patriots pull out a 27-21 victory.

Anything can happen on any given Sunday, but more often than not it’s all the hours you put in off the field that produce success on it. Belichick has been dreaming about this particular Sunday for a very long time.

        Conference Championships record: 1-1

        Season record to date: 33-28

Ice picks: Friday's best NHL bets
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Islanders at Ottawa Senators (-160, 5.5)

The Ottawa Senators are at a breaking point in their season. Not long ago, they were just two points out of top spot in the Eastern Conference after getting on a 13-2-2 surge.

But now they head into Friday’s game with New York having lost four straight, which has dropped them all the way to sixth with a number of teams nipping at their heels.

“We’re in the thick of things and we had a pretty successful month, when you look at it as a whole,” Jason Spezza told the team’s official website. “It was a pretty daunting month and we could have put ourselves in a real tough position, but we’ve got ourselves in a position where we’re in the mix. Now we have some work to do the rest of the way.”

Spezza is pointless during Ottawa’s skid and needs to pull it together quickly.

The Islanders are 4-1-1 in their last six as John Tavares has asserted himself as one of the top young guns in the game. He was named first star of January and has 53 points this season.

                          Pick: Islanders

Columbus Blue Jackets at Anaheim Ducks (-230, 5.5)

It’s almost painful to read through the Blue Jackets’ post-game comments at this point.

They were burned by a clock malfunction when a late Kings goal shouldn’t have counted in their latest loss, but it just sounded like the same old story after the game.

“We have a lot of guys who have a lot to play for still,” goaltender Curtis Sanford told reporters. “There are a lot of games left and we just have to do whatever we can to win as many of them as possible.”

He doesn’t exactly exude confidence, does he?

The Blue Jackets have now dropped six in a row and the Ducks can’t afford losing any more winnable games.

With no value on the home team, we’ll play over.

                          Pick: Over
