Huskies And Bears Lead Thursday Pac-12 Card

Oh, how times have changed. Death, taxes and UCLA basketball used to be three of the most dependable things in life. Sadly, only death and taxes remain as such.

Indeed, these are tough times on the Pac-12 college basketball front. The decline of the UCLA Bruins is a big reason for the overall falloff in the conference, but not the only cause since no other school has stepped forward to pick up the slack. It's just as likely today that you'll hear fans and bettors discussing other left coast teams like Saint Mary's, Gonzaga or San Diego State as there is mention of a Pac-12 squad.

Just how bad things have become can be found in the latest AP and coaches polls. The California Golden Bears are the only bunch getting even a sniff of respect in either rankings, and with just two points from the coaches, their days as part of the "others receiving votes" list could be numbered.

Four teams made it to the NCAA Tournament a year ago, which isn't an embarrassing number until you realize half of that quartet made it by the skin of their teeth. Southern Cal received an at-large bid thanks to the field being increased to 68. The Trojans promptly fell in one of the 'First Four' contests, dropping a 59-46 decision as 4-point favorites to Virginia Commonwealth out of the Colonial Athletic Association, the Rams using that victory as a springboard all the way to the Final Four.

Washington played their way into the 2011 NCAA Tournament by winning the (then) Pac-10 tourney in a bit of a surprise. Arizona and UCLA each received at-large bids, with the Wildcats just falling short in the West Regional Finals to eventual national champ Connecticut.

The current quality of play in the Pac-12 might not warrant four teams getting an invite to March Madness. California is the closest thing to a lock at this point based on solid positioning in RPI (31st) and the Ken Pomeroy rankings (19th), not to mention the Bears being the only team to be found in the two major polls. Washington is the next highest in RPI (73rd), with UCLA, Arizona, Stanford and Oregon State all sitting between Cal and Washington according to Pomeroy.

The Bears and Huskies are presently tied for the conference lead with 7-2 Pac-12 records, and both will be on their home courts Thursday looking to improve their standing with the selection committee.

UCLA at Washington – 9:00 p.m. (ET) ESPN
    Alaska Airlines Arena, Seattle

Followers of series trends should have no trouble making their play on the Huskies and the 'under.' Washington opened as 4-point chalk and has won the last seven home tilts vs. UCLA while covering six of those contests. The lone spread defeat came last March when the Huskies narrowly missed beating the 8-point line with a 70-63 triumph.

Thursday's total hit the college basketball betting board at 140. Nine of the last 13 in this series have finished 'under,' with five of the last seven in Seattle never reaching the scoreboard tally. That plays well to a current 6-game run for the Huskies to the 'under.' It goes against the grain for UCLA, however; the Bruins enter riding a 6-game string to the 'over.'

Washington does have CJ Wilcox back into the mix after the sophomore guard missed three games with a hip injury. Wilcox is third on the team averaging 14.8 points per game, and scored 15 in the Huskies' 69-67 win as 4½-point 'dogs at Arizona last Saturday.

    Arizona at California – 11:00 p.m. (ET)
    Haas Pavilion, Berkeley

It's just shy of a year ago when these teams last met and put on a helluva' show, as the Wildcats came away with a 107-105 road win in triple-overtime to 'push' the 2-point spread. In a game that had more than its fair share of statistical storylines, Arizona's bench players outscoring their Cal counterparts 52-3 stood out the most.

The Bears are home favorites this time and being asked to cover nine points on the NCAA odds. Thursday's scoreboard hurdle started at 129.

Arizona's loss to Washington last Saturday snapped a 3-game cover streak for the Wildcats who have won just two of their last six away games this season. Cal is a perfect 14-0 at home this season (9-3 ATS), 16-0 at Haas Pavilion dating back to last season.

The teams have split the last six clashes, but Bears backers have grabbed the cash in four of those to go along with the one 'push' from last February.

Chicago Bulls Tip TNT Thursday At NY Knicks

There are six games on the NBA Thursday slate, including the Denver Nuggets visiting the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Nuggets will likely be an underdog, a role they’ve excelled in at 5-1 against the spread. Some other top ‘dogs are Minnesota (10-3 ATS), Dallas (5-2 ATS) and Cleveland (10-5 ATS).

Chicago Bulls at New York Knicks
    8:00 p.m. (ET) on TNT

Chicago (18-5 straight up, 14-9 ATS) will be playing the second half of a back-to-back after visiting Philadelphia on Wednesday. That result between division leaders is still pending. The Bulls long 9-game trip started with a 97-93 loss at Miami and 98-88 win at Washington. Both were covers and they’re 5-1 ATS in their last six away.

Forward Luol Deng (wrist) was doubtful against Philly after missing five games. Richard Hamilton (groin) is also out indefinitely, with Kyle Korver now starting. That makes the bench very thin with the starters logging a lot of minutes. Having no rest on Thursday won’t help.

New York (8-13 SU, 6-15 ATS) may be the NBA's most underachieving team and coach Mike D’Antoni is feeling the pressure. There was some good news on Tuesday night, a 113-86 win as 9-point home favorites over lowly Detroit, the only team with a worse ATS record.

Carmelo Anthony came back rested after missing two games and scored 25 points. He also shot 9-of-14 from the field after a brutal 40-of-126 (31.7 percent) stretch. Anthony’s effort helped last game go ‘over’ the 183 points. The ‘under’ was 12-2 in New York’s previous 14, only breaking 100 points four times.

This is the first meeting between the teams this year. The ‘under’ is 7-1 in the last eight in the Big Apple.

Denver Nuggets at Los Angeles Clippers
    10:30 p.m. (ET) on TNT

These teams met last Sunday in Denver with Los Angeles getting a 109-105 win as 5½-point underdogs. The Clippers have now won three straight in the series and covered six in a row.

The Nuggets (14-7 SU and ATS) had their 6-game winning streak snapped against the Clips and then lost Tuesday night at Memphis, 100-97 in overtime. Their 91 points scored in regulation was their lowest in 11 games, although they’re leading the league in scoring overall (105.4 PPG).

Denver had seen the ‘over’ go 8-2 in its previous 10 games before Memphis. Balanced scoring is the ticket with six guys in double-digits.

The Clippers (12-6 SU, 11-7 ATS) are ranked fifth overall in scoring at 98.6 PPG. However, they seem to be really hitting their stride offensively with the 109 points at Denver and winning 112-100 at home against Oklahoma City on Monday.

Los Angeles will be the more tired team after traveling to Utah on Wednesday (result pending). However, this is a pretty young group with good guard depth now that Chris Paul (hamstring) is back healthy. The team is 4-1 SU and ATS on zero days rest this year.

    Other Thursday news and notes

Memphis (11-10 SU, 10-11 ATS) is 0-3 SU and ATS away in its last three as it visits Atlanta (16-6 SU, 12-9-1 ATS). The ‘under’ is 10-1 in Memphis’ road games. Atlanta is playing hard for coach Larry Drew and is 9-2 SU (6-4-1 ATS) since Al Horford went out with a pectoral injury.

New Orleans (4-17 SU, 10-11 ATS) has played almost the whole year without guard Eric Gordon and the last four without backup center Chris Kaman, who is currently being shopped. Points are at a premium (87.4 PPG, ranked 28th), but the ‘over’ is 3-2 in the last five with some low totals. The Hornets visit San Antonio (13-9 SU, 11-11 ATS), with both teams playing back-to-backs.

Sacramento (6-15 SU, 8-13 ATS) is 4-4 SU at home versus 2-11 SU away. The team is playing without second-leading scorer Marcus Thornton (16.4 PPG) and Jimmer Fredette needs to consistently step up. Portland (12-9 SU, 11-9-1 ATS) is just 3-8 SU and ATS on the road and hosts Charlotte on Wednesday before flying to Sacramento.

Utah (12-7 SU, 10-9 ATS) visits Golden State (7-12 SU, 8-11 ATS) and could be without big man Al Jefferson (ankle). He was doubtful for Wednesday versus the Clippers. Golden State is finishing a disappointing 6-game homestand that has gone 3-2 SU and 1-4 ATS so far.

Gonzaga And BYU Close Thursday Hoops Slate

Tuesday night on the college hardwood produced a number of relatively low-scoring games. The average final score only tallied 123.2 PPG, and there were almost as many teams that scored in the 40s (six) than teams that got into the 70s or 80s (seven).

The end result saw 'under' bettors finish the evening at 7-6, and on Thursday, there are definitely some trends that point to more low-scoring games as well.

We'll start with the final tip of the evening at 11:00 (ET), as the Gonzaga Bulldogs take on the BYU Cougars in Provo. This game is obviously huge for both teams, with each needing some big time victories to prove that they are worthy candidates for the NCAA Tournament as at-large bids, assuming that the Saint Mary's Gaels take the conference tournament title.

BYU and Gonzaga have a combined record in the totals department of 25-14 to the 'under.' The Cougars have played seven of their last nine beneath the total, while the Zags have gone 11-1-1 for 'under' bettors in their last 13.

You can catch this crucial bubble battle on ESPN2 or ESPN3.

Though the Duke Blue Devils have double the number of 'overs' as they do 'unders,' they are definitely going to be on under alert when they take on the Virginia Tech Hokies on Thursday. These two ACC foes have played four of their last five games below the total, which only bolsters the fact that Va Tech has gone 6-2 for 'under' bettors in its last eight games.

The Hokies badly need to win this game and get on a roll if they hope to have a chance of dancing this year, while the Dookies are still trying to claim a top seed in the tournament.

The action unfolds from Blacksburg at 7:00 (ET) on ESPN.

The Murray State Racers remain as the nation's only undefeated team, and they are going to put that mark on the line against arguably their toughest conference competition when they host the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks on Thursday. Even though the Racers are a Top 10 team in the AP Poll, they aren't necessarily going to even be in the top half of the bracket when the Selection Committee is said and done, and the more impressive wins that can be had, the better.

Murray State will inch closer to wrapping up the top seed in the Ohio Valley Tournament with a win on Thursday night, and will be a huge favorite on the NCAA basketball odds to do so. This 8:00 (ET) tip can be seen on ESPNU.

In the only other two games featuring ranked teams on Thursday, the Florida Gators will host the South Carolina Gamecocks at 9:00 (ET) on ESPN2 and ESPN3, while the St. Mary's Gaels will take on the San Diego Toreros at 10:00 (ET).

The Nebraska Cornhuskers and Northwestern Wildcats meet in a Big Ten battle at 7:00 (ET) on ESPN2 and ESPN3, a game that is immediately followed by the UCLA Bruins and Washington Huskies squaring off at Alaska Airlines Arena at 9:00 (ET) on the Deuce.

Blackhawks Continue Long Trip At Edmonton Oilers

The All-Star break provided a few NHL playoff contenders some extra rest to get healthy and make a run at the Stanley Cup in the second half of the season. The Chicago Blackhawks are one of those teams, and welcomed back two of their top scorers on Tuesday when center Jonathan Toews and winger Patrick Sharp were activated from injured reserve at the start of a nine-game road trip.

Toews and Sharp each were recovering from wrist injuries, but their return was not enough to prevent a 3-2 overtime loss to the Vancouver Canucks (31-15-4). They will try to help their team bounce back and end a three-game skid on the next stop of their trip against the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday night at 9:30 p.m. (ET).

The Oilers (19-26-5) are coming off a 3-2 home win over the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday and have won the last two meetings, including a 9-2 rout back on November 19. That game highlights a slate of eight games overall on Thursday.

The Blackhawks (29-15-7) are still chasing the Detroit Red Wings (34-16-1) for the lead in the very competitive Central Division that had four of the Western Conference’s top six teams heading into Wednesday. The St. Louis Blues (29-13-7) are the only team of that group that will not play until Friday when they host the Los Angeles Kings (24-16-10).

Detroit maintained its cushion out west and won for the eighth time in nine games on Tuesday with a 3-1 road victory against the Calgary Flames (23-22-6), while the Nashville Predators (31-16-4) also did the Central proud by rallying back from a three-goal deficit in the third period for a 5-4 win over the Minnesota Wild (24-19-7) away from home as well. Both teams will be in action again on Thursday as Nashville wraps up a two-game road trip against the Philadelphia Flyers (29-14-6) at 7:00 p.m. before Detroit visits Vancouver at 10:00 p.m.

The Predators have won their last five games, tied for the second-longest current winning streak with the Tampa Bay Lightning (22-23-4), who host the Winnipeg Jets (23-22-6) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. The Pittsburgh Penguins (29-17-4) had won eight in a row prior to visiting the Toronto Maple Leafs (25-19-6) on Wednesday.

The Penguins are chasing the Flyers and New York Rangers (31-12-5) in the Atlantic Division and got some positive news on Tuesday when it was announced that captain Sidney Crosby is suffering from a soft tissue injury in his neck that is more treatable than a concussion or fracture. Crosby skated with teammates on Tuesday morning but still is nowhere close to being cleared to play

          Thursday's Tips

          February 2, 2012

          **South Carolina at Florida**

--Most betting shops opened Florida (17-4 straight up, 9-7 against the spread) as a 15-point favorite with a total of 136 ½. As of late this morning, most spots had the Gators as 14 1/2-point favorites with a total of 134 1/2. The Las Vegas Hilton has the Gamecocks available at 10/1 odds to win outright (risk $100 to win $1,000).

--Billy Donovan’s club has won five in a row since losing at Tennessee, improving to 5-1 in SEC play. The Gators dropped Mississippi St. by a 69-57 count as 8 ½-point home favorites this past Saturday afternoon at the O-Dome. Bradley Beal scored a game-high 19 points to lead four Florida players in double figures. Erik Murphy scored 14 points and Patric Young finished with 12 points and six rebounds. Young had several crown-igniting dunks and limited MSU’s Arnett Moultrie to just 12 points.

--UF is unbeaten in 13 home games, compiling a 5-4 spread record in the nine lined contests. The Gators have been double-digit home favorites seven times, going 3-4 versus the number.

--South Carolina (9-11 SU, 7-8 ATS) got its first SEC win last week over Alabama, but the Gamecocks are still in the conference cellar with a 1-5 record in league play. This has fourth-year head coach Darrin Horn on a serious hot seat.

--USC is coming off a 66-62 loss at Ole Miss as a five-point underdog. Malik Cooke scored 17 points in the losing effort, while Brenton Williams chipped in with 15 points.

--When these SEC East rivals met in Columbia on Jan 14, Florida overcame a one-point halftime deficit by draining 12-of-24 attempts from 3-point range en route to a 79-65 win as a seven-point road ‘chalk.’ Kenny Boynton knocked down four of those treys and finished with a team-high 15 points. Bruce Ellington had a game-high 17 points for the ‘Cocks.

--The ‘over’ is 11-5 overall for UF, 8-2 in its home games. However, the ‘under’ has cashed at a 4-2 clip in the Gators’ last six outings.

--The ‘under’ is 8-7 overall for South Carolina, but the ‘over’ is 4-3 in its road games.

The ‘over’ has hit in four straight head-to-head meetings between these schools.

          --Tip-off is slated for 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2.

          **Gonzaga at Brigham Young**

--Most books opened BYU (18-6 SU, 10-10 ATS) as a three-point favorite with a total of 147 ½. As of late this morning, the opening numbers really hadn't budged at all with the exception of a few books moving the Cougars to 3 1/2. Gamblers can take Gonzaga on the money line for a plus-150 return (risk $100 to win $150).

--Dave Rose’s team needs this victory badly to bolster its hopes of earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, especially after suffering an embarrassing 80-66 home loss to Saint Mary’s this past Saturday night as a 2 ½-point favorite. Noah Hartsock and Matt Carlino scored 15 points apiece and Brandon Davies finished with 14 points and seven rebounds.

--Gonzaga (17-3 SU, 9-11 ATS) has won four consecutive games since getting trounced at Saint Mary’s, but the Bulldogs are mired in a 0-5 ATS slide. They are coming off a 74-62 win at Portland as 15-point road favorites. Gary Bell Jr. scored a team-high 18 points, while Elias Harris had a double-double with 17 points and 10 boards.

--Mark Few’s squad has been an underdog three times, going 1-2 both SU and ATS. The ‘Zags lost to Illinois and Saint Mary’s, but they won outright at Xavier.

--BYU is 10-3 SU and 5-4 ATS at home.

--The ‘under’ is 14-5-1 overall for Gonzaga, cashing in eight of its last nine games. Meanwhile, the ‘under’ is 12-8 overall for BYU although the ‘over’ is 5-4 in its home outings.

--When these teams met in the second round of the NCAA Tournament last year, Jimmer Fredette led BYU to an easy 89-67 win to advance to the Sweet 16. The Cougars won in blowout fashion as one-point favorites.

--ESPN2 will have the telecast at 11:00 p.m. Eastern.

          **B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

--The Pitt Panthers aren’t dead yet.

          --Best BracketBuster Matchups:
          1-Saint Mary’s at Murray St.
          2-Long Beach St. at Creighton
          3-Wichita St. at Davidson
          4-Nevada at Iona
          5-No. Iowa at VCU

--Manhattan and Middle Tennessee are now sporting the nation’s best ATS records with 16-5 ATS marks. The Blue Raiders took the cash in a seven-point loss at Vandy this past Saturday as nine-point ‘dogs.

--Take Kentucky off of the fade list. The ‘Cats have bounced back from an atrocious 0-13-1 ATS slump to cover the number in four of their last five games.

--I went 3-0 in college hoops last night, cashing winners with Michigan, So. Miss and Maryland. The Golden Eagles finally beat Memphis for the first time since 2004 to improve to 20-3 on the season.

--Syracuse's Fab Melo will return to the lineup Saturday versus St. John's. Melo has sat out the last three games due to academic issues. Melo averages 7.2 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.

Hokies usually play their best ball as an underdog, which they obiously are here. ACC home teams are 3-7 against spread when number is less than 5 points.

Northwestern lost five of last six games, dropping last three by 20-23-2 points, as dreams of making NCAAs for first time slip away; they're 1-2 as a Big Dozen favorite, 2-2 SU at home, beating Michigan State by 7, Penn State by 12, losing to Illinois/Purdue by 1-2 points. Nebraska covered five of last six games, including last three road games- they're 3-2 SU in last five games, winning at Iowa in last games, a full week ago. Pioneers lost last six visits here, losing two of last three years in OT. Florida has big game with Vanderbilt Saturday, could look past this game.

Favorites are 5-0 vs spread in Washington's Pac-12 home games, with Huskies 4-1 SU (all four wins by 10+ points). Home team won eight of UCLA's nine conference games, with only win on "road" at crosstown rival USC; Bruins are 0-4 in Pac-12 outside of LA, losing by 1-16-3-7 points- they're 1-2 as Pac-12 road dogs. UCLA is 2-7 against teams in top 100- their conference losses are by 1-16-3-7 points. Pac-12 single digit home favorites are 15-11 vs spread, 4-5 if spread is 4 or less.

Oregon State won its last three games, scoring 80.3 ppg, but they're 0-4 in Pac-12 outside state of Oregon, losing by 15-5-8-10 points. Beavers are 1-2 as Pac-12 road underdog. WAC single digit home favorites are 5-11 against the spread.
