Notes and tips

New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski said Wednesday that the team is looking into a specialized cleat he could wear in Sunday's Super Bowl to make it easier for him to play with a high left ankle sprain. The tight end didn’t practice again on Wednesday. "I think he's making improvements, getting better every day. We'll just take it day-to-day and see what he's able to do today," said Patriots head coach Brian Belichick. Gronkowski has not practiced since suffering the injury in the third quarter against the Baltimore Ravens during the AFC Championship game. The 22-year-old has caught 15 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns in two postseason games to date.

The Boston Bruins will welcome defenseman Andrew Ference back to the lineup Thursday at home against the Carolina Hurricanes. Ference served a three-game suspension for his hit on Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh and had two goals and two assists in his previous three games. Ference has notched 20 points and a plus-15 rating in 43 matches this season.

Rasheed Wallace is contemplating coming out of retirement and returning to the NBA, according to YAHOO! Sports. Wallace contacted the Los Angeles Lakers a few weeks ago and expressed interest in joining the team. The four-time NBA All-Star retired after the 2009-10 season, but has told friends he's interested in returning to the NBA. The 37-year-old averaged nine points and 4.1 rebounds in 79 games for the Boston Celtics in his final season.

-- Southern Miss ended eight years of frustration by beating Memphis 75-72, ending an 18-game losing streak against the Tigers.

-- Miami Heat scored 40 points in first quarter, 37 in second half as the Bucks upset them 105-97 in Milwaukee.

-- Maryland's Terrell Stoglin scored 33 points, but was 6-19 outside the arc, 3-6 inside it, as Terps lost 90-86 in double overtime at Miami.

-- UConn is struggling; Huskies lost 58-44 at Georgetown, fourth loss in a row, second game in row they scored less than 50 points.

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Throwing around some Super Bowl props

One of the few Las Vegas sports books I haven’t been in is the one at the Las Vegas Hilton; I’m going next time I’m out there. In the meantime, they’ve listed over 400 prop bets for the Super Bowl. Here is a sampling of some of the investments you can make on Sunday’s game. All in all, they have a PDF file with 44 pages of Super Bowl props......

13) Most basic of all wagers is Patriots, -3, with an over/under of 55. My opinion is that there is value with these Patriots; too many folks are hopping on the New Jersey bandwagon. Four years ago, no one gave the Giants a chance; those are the teams that pull upsets.

12) Coin toss: Don’t laugh, I’ve seen multiple people wager significant money on this, which is part of why Sunday is the busiest day of the year for Gamblers’ Anonymous........You can also bet on which team will get the most penalty yards. Who would do this?

11) Will either team score in the first 5:30 of the game? Yes +$105, No -$125. Since teams played already this season, think it lessens the chance for a big play early on. Less surprises in return matchups.

10) Total TD’s: over 6.5, +$105, under 6.5 -$125.
These are the simple, football-related props. There are crazier ones that get into the Phoenix Open and stats from NBA games this weekend, but in good conscience, I’m not going to promote chaos. If you just want action, go play Quick Draw.

9) Largest lead of the game: over 13.5, -$160, under 13.5, +$140.
So the bet here is that, at any point in the game, will either team lead by 14+ points?

8) If you want to cash a big ticket, go against the grain with one of these investments: over 69.5 points- +$400, Giants -10.5, +$550, Patriots -17.5, +750. My personal favorite is Patriots -10.5, getting +$290.

7) Will there be overtime? Never has been an OT in a Super Bowl (this is the 46th one), though they’ve come close a few times. Yes +$800, No -$1,100.

6) What happens first? Patriots score -$120, Patriots punt, even. Don’t forget, a Patriot turnover on the first possession doesn’t end this one. Has to be either a score or a punt to win.

5) Longest field goal of game; over or under 44.5 yards.

4) More receiving yards: Victor Cruz -8.5 over Wes Welker. Chances are Welker catches more passes, but his will be shorter. Cruz has become a home run hitter, capable of the huge play.

3) Longest TD by either side 49.5 yards. Perception is that these two defenses are sub-par, but you don’t get this far with a bad defense.

2) Over/under for Giants' rushing yards is 104.5 yards. If you want to bet on Brandon Jacobs' carries: over 7.5 $+105, under 7.5, -$125.

I like under here on Jacobs' carries, unless of course Bradshaw gets hurt. No way to know that beforehand.

1) And a terrific idea to keep everyone interested until the end, will the last score be a TD or something else (PAT counts as part of the TD)? Touchdown, -$240, anything other than a TD, +$200.

ACC:

Virginia starting center Assane Sene will miss as many as six weeks of action because of a broken ankle that required surgery. Sene is a 7-foot senior averaging 4.9 points and 3.7 rebounds in 21 minutes per game. He started every game for the Cavaliers and they went 15-2 SU over their first 17 games. Since Sene’s injury, Virginia has gone 2-1 SU but just 1-2 ATS with their lone spread win coming in a 61-60 game as a 2-point underdog.

“Assane is a senior and an integral part of our team,” Virginia head coach Tony Bennett told reporters. “In all my years of coaching, he is one of the most team-first players I’ve been around. I know he’ll do whatever he can from a rehabilitation standpoint to try and return to action before the end of the season.”

BIG 10:

Illinois has a talented 7-foot-1 sophomore center dominating the paint this season. Meyers Leonard has opened many eyes with his play and he is currently projected as a future lottery pick in the NBA draft. Leonard is a high-energy guy that also logs a lot of minutes for the Illini.

He averages well over 30 minutes per game and is has also shot better than 50 percent in six of Illinois’ eight Big 10 games so far this season. But despite Leonard’s play, Illinois is just 3-5 ATS in conference play.

BIG 12:

The Cyclones are made up of a bunch of transfers and head coach Fred Hoiberg has done a tremendous job molding those guys together. One of them is Minnesota transfer Royce White, who is averaging 13.6 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. White is doing great work despite suffering from an anxiety disorder since childhood.

“To an extent it’s almost a good thing," White told reporters. "It’s almost a gift in the sense because I really focus. “Sometimes it’s a curse, too, because my fatigue level is always real high because of it. I never get to sleep.”

Iowa State is 6-2 ATS in Big 12 play, including 5-1 ATS as an underdog.

BIG EAST:

The Hoyas opened the season at 13-1 SU, but since then they’ve gone just 3-3 SU over their last six games. They’ve been even worse against the spread going just 1-7 ATS over their last eight games.

A major reason for their decline in play has been their defense. The Hoyas have allowed 70 points or more in four of their last seven games after holding 12 of their previous 13 opponents to 68 points or fewer.

“From the defensive end, lack of communication to lack of effort to breakdown,” said head coach John Thompson III.

PAC 12:

The Ducks have won nine of their past 12 games, and they are 6-3 in conference play. Transfers are playing a big role for Oregon as Devoe Joseph (Minnesota) is the leading scorer, Tony Woods (Wake Forest) is the leading rebounder, and the top reserve is Olu Ashaolu (LA Tech). Oregon owns three road wins in conference play and the Ducks are also 10-1 SU in games decided by fewer than 10 points, including a 4-0 SU mark in games decided by fewer than five points.

One reason is that the Ducks are shooting 88.3 percent (68-of-77) from the line in the final five minutes of games decided by fewer than 10 points. Oregon is 3-1 ATS as a road underdog in conference play, and we expect the pointspread covers to continue.

SEC:

The Tigers are just 12-9 SU overall and 2-5 SU in SEC play this season, but LSU has played a brutal schedule, playing three ranked opponents in succession. They have no games scheduled for this upcoming week, which is a major advantage to have this late in the season.

LSU’s remaining schedule is very manageable as only three of the Tigers' remaining nine opponents are over .500 in conference play. The Tigers are just 3-5 ATS over their last eight games, but this team will present some good pointspread value going forward, especially in the underdog role.

LA Bruins at Washington Huskies (-3.5, 142.5)

If UCLA is going to be a player in the Pac-12 race, the Bruins are going to have to prove they can win on the road. Thursday’s test at Washington will be a good place to start.

UCLA is 1-6 on the road this season and with an RPI ranking of 134, it certainly won’t earn an NCAA Tournament berth unless it can solve those road woes immediately. Winning at Washington, which UCLA hasn’t done since 2004, won’t be an easy task. The Huskies are 11-2 at Seattle and tied with California for first in the Pac-12.

However, UCLA continues to shoot the ball well led by the Wear brothers. Travis Wear is shooting 57 percent and twin David is making 51 percent of his shots. As a team, UCLA shoots 49 percent from the floor.

The Bruins have covered the number in five of their last seven and should at least keep this close down to the wire.

Arizona Wildcats at California Golden Bears (-7, 130.5)

California has won 17 straight at home, including 14 this season. The Bears have also shot 50.5 percent and limited opponents to only 36.5 percent from the field at home.

Allen Crabbe and Jorge Gutierrez picked up this season where they left off last. Gutierrez led California last year with 14.6 points per game and was an All-Pac-10 first-team selection.

This season he is averaging 14.1 points and 5.3 rebounds. Crabbe was named Pac-10 Freshman of the Year last season. This season, he leads the Golden Bears with 15.8 and 6.1.

The Wildcats have struggled of late, going 2-4 in their last six games against opponents with a winning record. Arizona is 0-4 in games decided by five or fewer points, and in each of those games has started the second half poorly.

The over has cashed in 16 of the last 21 meetings between these teams and that looks like a solid play again.

Memphis Grizzlies at Atlanta Hawks (-4.5, 182.5)

The Atlanta Hawks could have easily tanked when Al Horford hit the shelf with a pectoral injury and nobody would have thought much about it.

Instead, the Hawks have won nine of the 11 games they have played without the All-Star center, going 6-4-1 against the number.

Joe Johnson scored 30 points in a 100-77 blowout of the Raptors on Tuesday, upping his scoring average to a team-leading 19.1 points per game.

"From a scorer's standpoint, you kind of look at how your first couple of baskets are," Johnson told reporters. "I got two really easy baskets and that just gets you into a rhythm. I kept getting great looks."

With Memphis coming off an impressive 100-97 overtime win over Denver, this total is looking a little low. We’ll take a shot with the over.

Utah Jazz at Golden State Warriors (-4.5, 194.5)

Golden State Warriors coach Mark Jackson feels like he’s making progress with his club.

With Tyreke Evans putting up 22 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists and Golden State’s bench outscoring Sacramento’s 43-21, the Warriors came away with a 93-90 win Tuesday.

"Anytime you've got some players, some home run hitters on that starting lineup, it's a tough decision," Jackson said about giving his bench big minutes. "Because you know what you're going to get, offensively especially. ... The bench guys just played great. I've always said, if you want to play, force me to leave you in. And those guys did exactly that. They deserved to win or lose this ballgame."

The Warriors came away with the win, but it wasn’t enough to get them to the pay window as 4.5-point favorites. Golden State is now just 1-5 against the spread in its last six, but this team is getting closer.

Utah has some problems on the road allowing almost 103 points per game, while going 2-4 against the spread.

We like Jackson’s club to cash in here at home.
