Sunday’s betting tips: Heels hot without Strickland

    Who’s hot

NBA: The Hornets are 5-0 ATS in their last five overall.

NBA: The Celtics are 4-0 ATS in their last four overall.

NCAAB: Ohio State is 5-1 ATS in its last six overall and 5-0 ATS in its last five home games.

NCAAB: The under is 14-3 in Notre Dame's last 17 overall and 4-1 Connecticut's last five overall.

    Who’s not

NBA: The Spurs are 3-14 ATS in their last 17 road games.

NBA: The Heat are 0-4 ATS in their last four overall and 0-4 ATS in their last four against the Eastern Conference.

NCAAB: Indiana is 3-12 ATS in its last 15 against the Big Ten.

NCAAB: Oregon State is 0-4 ATS in its last four road games.

    Key stat

38 – Points by which North Carolina is outscoring opponents in its last three halves of basketball. Interestingly, that dates back to almost the exact moment when slick-shooting guard Dexter Strickland went down at Virginia Tech with a torn ACL last weekend. The Tar Heels promptly hammered the Hokies 48-29 in the second half of that game to erase an eight-point deficit. Carolina, which hosts Georgia Tech on Sunday, then destroyed N.C. State 74-55 at home on Sunday. Other stats that matter for the Heels are their perfect 13-0 home record this season and their ACC-leading +12.1 average rebounding margin.

    Injuries that shouldn’t be overlooked

The Mavericks are dealing with all kinds of injury problems heading into Sunday's home against San Antonio. Dirk Nowitzki (knee) and Delonte West (hamstring) are listed as questionable and Jason Kidd (calf) is doubtful. Nowitzki has not played since January 19, instead choosing to work exclusively on conditioning. West missed his first game of the season when he sat out against the Jazz on Friday. Kidd strained his right calf in the Mavs' 116-101 home win over Utah.

    Biggest games on the slate

Chicago Bulls at Miami Heat (-4.5, 191.5)

    Indiana Pacers at Orlando Magic

Los Angeles Clippers at Denver Nuggets (-6, 204.5)

    Notable quotable

Some of the Green Bay Packers' Hawaii-bound players weighed in this week on playing in Sunday's Pro Bowl rather than next weekend's Super Bowl.

"It's great. It's a fun experience. A lot of us would like to be in our home cities getting ready for the Super Bowl, but this is a great opportunity. A great vacation, good guys, good times." -- Quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

"It's no secret we're disappointed in the way our season ended, but at the same time I'm excited to be here and looking forward to taking everything in." -- Center Scott Wells.

"Obviously, it's not where you want to be, but if there's a crystal ball and you knew you weren't going to be in the big dance, this will be the consolation prize." -- Wide receiver Greg Jennings.

    Tips and notes

California is undefeated at home this season going into Sunday night's game against rival Stanford. The Golden Bears are 13-0 on their home floor and 8-3 ATS. They are 3-0 and 3-0 ATS in their last three at home against the Cardinal. Stanford will look to buck the trends without forward Richard Solomon (6.0 ppg, 6.2 rpg). Solomon was declared academically ineligible for the remainder of the season last week.

Overall the Lakers are still struggling, as they have lost four of their last six and they are 1-6 ATS in their last seven. However, they overcame their fellow L.A. squad 96-91 on Wednesday and they are going up against a depleted Minnesota team on Sunday. The Timberwolves are already without guard J.J. Barea, who will be sidelined until next week with a hamstring injury. Now big men Brad Miller (knee) and Darko Milicic (illness) are questionable to face the Lakers.

Kyle Stanley (-18) has a five-shot lead at the Farmers Insurance Open heading into the final day at Torrey Pines. However, the 24-year-old has never won on the PGA Tour. Should Stanley falter, a whole host of golfers would be in contention. Proven winners Bill Haas and Brandt Snedeker are lurking; Haas is six shots behind but just one shot out of second and Snedeker is seven shots behind but only two shots behind second place. Haas is +1200 to win the tournament while Snedeker is going off at +2500.

      Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- Former Steeler OC Bruce Arians is likely to end his "retirement" by signing with the Colts in the same capacity. Some retirement.

-- Arizona F Kevin Parrom broke his foot Saturday, is out for the year.

-- Lakers lost at Milwaukee; they're 1-6 outside the Staples Center.

-- Knicks lost at Houston, their ninth loss in last ten games.

-- USC got its first Pac-12 win of the season, beating up on poor Utah.

-- Zdeno Chara hit a slapshot 108.8 mph to set a new record at the NHL's skills competition; imagine trying to block that?

      *****************

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: wrapping up a sports Saturday........

      13) Worst call of the season so far, and there better not be a worse one, was non-call on a goaltending play that cost West Virginia a tying basket in the last 0:10 of their 63-61 loss in the Carrier Dome. Inexcusable for an official, actually three of them, to miss an easy call in such a big spot.

      12) Game of the night was in Des Moines, where Drake upset Wichita State 93-86 in triple OT, despite Rayvonte Rice going 5-23 from floor (he was 9-12 from the line). First loss of the month for the Wheatshockers.

      11) Illinois-Minnesota need to play in Big Dozen tourney, because both of their games in regular season went OT. Gophers held Illinois to 3-21 on the arc in getting their fourth win in their last five games. 77-72 in OT.

      10) Tough travel week for UNLV and San Diego State, with two trips to the Rocky Mountains; Aztecs got zapped in Fort Collins by Colorado State, while the Rebels survived OT at the Air Force Academy, second OT win of the week for UNLV. They were very tired at the end.

      9) Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg has rebuilt his alma mater's basketball team quickly, using a lot of transfers, best of which is Royce White, who came to Ames from Minnesota after suffering from anxiety disorders and other off-the-court problems. White has turned things around and Iowa State is vastly improved, especially in Hilton Coliseum.

      8) Congrats to Towson State, which ended its 41-game losing streak with a home win Saturday; losing sucks, hard to imagine going 14 months since your last win. Towson is in Baltimore; they should have better players.

      7) Washington ended a 5-year skid in Tucson by beating Arizona 69-67, its fifth win in its last six games overall. Pac-12 doesn't have any superior teams, but Washington's athleticism probably makes them #2 behind Cal.

      6) Murray State is still unbeaten; looking forward to Monday night, when they announce the Bracket Buster matchups. Murray State will likely be an underdog in its game against St Mary's or Wichita State or VCU.

      5) Keystone Giants, coached by a buddy, are now 16-2 after pounding a team from Philadelphia Bible School 100-57; Giants have won 12 games in a row. A revenge game with rival Cabrini College awaits February 15. Not sure how Christian it is to beat a bible college by 43, though.....lol

      4) Underdogs are 24-9-2 against the spread in ACC games this season.

      3) Biggest upset of the day was 14-point underdog Rhode Island's 86-81 win at Dayton; 12-point home dog Samford upset Davidson, and in the Big X, 11-point underdog Oklahoma won at Kansas State.

      2) Watched the Akron-Central Michigan game on my laptop; ESPN has to get more MAC games on TV. These teams played glorified pickup; it is obvious they just recruit the best athletes possible, fill in with a shooter here and there and try to teach as they go along. Akron's shooting at the foul line kept the Chippewas in the game, but Central Michigan is awful, other than the coach's son, the Zeigler kid.

But if you don't care who wins, its fun to watch.

      1) Kudos to my cousin KL Wheat, whose 2-mile relay team won its race in Madison Square Garden Saturday, big doings for high school kids. It needs to be pointed out that KL Wheat is in the Hall of Fame as a track coach!!!! Tremendous History teacher and coach for many, many years.

NFL Pro Bowl: What bettors need to know

        NFC vs. AFC (+4, 74)

        THE STORY
: The NFL does have a bowl game scheduled on Sunday. No, not the one pitting the New England Patriots against the New York Giants – that one will take place next week with decidedly far more pomp and circumstance.

This Sunday, the other 30 NFL teams will showcase their stars in the Pro Bowl. Yes, this is the game that often resembles a flag football competition with countless cameos of the stars on rival teams joking with one another along the sideline. Then again, this is also the contest that often draws larger-than-expected ratings as the scoreboard operator gets a spirited workout.

Welcome to Hawaii for the Pro Bowl, which for the third straight year comes one week before that “other” Bowl.

        TV: NBC, 7 p.m. ET.

LINE: The NFC opened as a 3.5-point favorite and was bet up to -4. The total was posted at 72.5 points and immediately took action on the over, moving the number to 74.

ABOUT THE NFC: Perhaps not surprisingly, the holders of the conference's top two seeds in the playoffs will be well-represented in Hawaii. San Francisco boasts nine players selected to the Pro Bowl while Green Bay is sending six of its finest to Aloha Stadium, headlined by 49ers stud running back Frank Gore and Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and veteran cornerback Charles Woodson. (Gore pulled out due to injury – a common theme for this game.) Green Bay will also send head coach Mike McCarthy, marking the second time that he has guided the NFC in a Pro Bowl (2008). New Orleans’ record-setting QB Drew Brees will see a familiar face in tight end Jimmy Graham, who will be making his first Pro Bowl appearance. With perhaps a future contract in mind, Chicago running back Matt Forte is expected to play despite missing the last four weeks of the regular season with a sprained knee.

ABOUT THE AFC: Four of the eight Baltimore players selected for the contest ultimately pulled out after the Ravens fell to the Patriots in the AFC Championship. As a result, Denver's six Pro Bowlers lead the conference's contingent – although the highly popular Tim Tebow is not among them. Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has opted to play despite being hampered by an ailing ankle, thus keeping Tebow on his couch and preventing myriad non-football media outlets from descending on the nation's 50th state. Baltimore LB Ray Lewis will be making his 13th Pro Bowl appearance while Houston coach Gary Kubiak will be enjoying his first.

SUPER SUBSTITUTES: With New England brandishing eight Pro Bowlers who will no longer play in the exhibition, the AFC needed to significantly shuffle its deck. Cincinnati rookie quarterback Andy Dalton and tight end Jermaine Greshman (replacing Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski) and San Diego wideout Vincent Jackson (Wes Welker) were among the notable additions. On the NFC side, New York quarterback Eli Manning and defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul were replaced by Carolina rookie Cam Newton and Chicago veteran Julius Peppers.

ALL ATWITTER: The NFL has relaxed its rules in regard to social media for this one game. Pro Bowl players will be allowed to tweet during the contest – well, sort of. The league designated specific kiosks on the sidelines for players to detail everything that is on their minds without fear of being flagged by Commissioner Roger Goodell.

LAST YEAR/SERIES HISTORY: The NFC posted a wild 55-41 victory over the AFC last year to claim a 21-20 edge in the all-time series. The NFC has won three of the last four Pro Bowls but the AFC holds a 14-12 all-time series lead. Over the past five seasons, the NFC is 4-1 ATS while the over/under is 3-2.

PREDICTION: NFC 49, AFC 35. No field goals here as the teams take turns racing up and down the field. After being named the Super Bowl MVP last season, Rodgers will need to make room in his trophy case (ahem) after being named the Pro Bowl MVP Sunday.

NHL All-Star Game: What bettors need to know

Team Chara (-110) vs. Team Alfredsson (-110, 18.5)

THE STORY: Daniel Alfredsson has long been embraced in Ottawa. The longest current serving captain in the NHL, the veteran Swede has made Canada's capital city his adopted second home. Without question, Alfredsson will continue to hear the cheers on Sunday as he captains his squad of All-Stars against those of led by Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara, a former Senators star.

To add to his good standing, Alfredsson selected teammates Erik Karlsson and Jason Spezza with his first two picks of the draft and Milan Michalek in the 13th round to boot. The opposing captain will also receive a familiar response by the good people in Ottawa - and this one won't be favorable.

Flanked by assistant Joffrey Lupul of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Chara raised a few eyebrows by eschewing allegiances of either team or country by selecting three-time Selke Trophy winner Pavel Datsyuk of the Detroit Red Wings with the first overall pick of the draft on Thursday night. With last year's Stanley Cup perhaps still fresh in his mind, Chara did not select either Henrik or Daniel Sedin or even Alex Edler from the Vancouver Canucks.

TV: 4 p.m. ET, NBCS, CBC

ABOUT TEAM CHARA: After picking Datsyuk, the towering blueliner didn't wait long to keep peace in his own locker room. With the second overall pick, Chara promptly selected fellow Bruin and reigning Vezina Trophy winner Tim Thomas, who addressed his White House snub by saying that he "followed his conscience."

After selecting NHL leading scorer Evgeni Malkin of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Chara picked countryman Marian Hossa of the Chicago Blackhawks in the fourth round and fellow Slovak Marian Gaborik in the 16th round. Lupul continued to ride the anti-Toronto crowd by selecting Maple Leafs teammate Phil Kessel in the eighth round and defenseman Dion Phaneuf in the 13th round. After making his teammate sweat, Chara selected Tyler Seguin in the 18th round and shared an awkward hug to bury any resentment.

OFFICIAL ROSTER: Goalies: Tim Thomas (Bruins), Carey Price (Canadiens), Jimmy Howard (Red Wings); Defensemen: Zdeno Chara (Bruins), Kimmo Timonen (Flyers), Ryan Suter (Predators), Brian Campbell (Panthers), Dion Phaneuf (Maple Leafs), Dennis Wideman (Capitals); Forwards: Joffrey Lupul (Maple Leafs), Pavel Datsyuk (Red Wings), Evgeni Malkin (Penguins), Marian Hossa (Blackhawks), Phil Kessel (Maple Leafs), Corey Perry (Ducks), Patrick Kane (Blackhawks), Jarome Iginla (Flames), Marian Gaborik (Rangers), Jordan Eberle (Oilers), Tyler Seguin (Bruins), Jamie Benn (Stars)

ABOUT TEAM ALFREDSSON: Ever the fan favorite, Alfredsson didn't just pick his fellow Senators. He also selected a former one in Brian Elliott. The current St. Louis Blues netminder leads the NHL in GAA (1.69) and save percentage (.937). Assistant captain Henrik Lundqvist also got in on the action by selecting New York Rangers teammate Dan Girardi, who has clearly grown tired of being reminded that he was undrafted into the NHL. Alfredsson also took care of his fellow Swedes by taking both Sedins, who were separated during last season's All-Star Game. For bragging rights, Daniel went in the ninth round and brother Henrik was picked in the 13th. Although Team Chara has three of the top four point producers, Alfredsson did secure some scoring punch when he picked Steven Stamkos of the Tampa Bay Lightning in the sixth round. Stamkos leads the NHL with 32 goals.

OFFICIAL ROSTER: Goalies: Henrik Lundqvist (Rangers), Jonathan Quick (Kings), Brian Elliott (Blues); Defensemen: Erik Karlsson (Senators), Kris Letang (Penguins), Shea Weber (Predators), Dan Girardi (Rangers), Keith Yandle (Coyotes), Alex Edler (Canucks); Forwards: Captain Daniel Alfredsson (Senators), Jason Spezza (Senators), Claude Giroux (Flyers), Steven Stamkos (Lightning), Daniel Sedin (Canucks), Milan Michalek (Senators), Henrik Sedin (Canucks), James Neal (Penguins), John Tavares (Islanders), Scott Hartnell (Flyers), Jason Pominville (Sabres), Logan Couture (Sharks)

          OVERTIME:

          1. Seven-time Norris Trophy winner Nicklas Lidstrom finished with a plus-7 as he captained his squad to an 11-10 victory over Team Staal in the 2011 All-Star Game. By his own admission, Lidstrom is resting his tired 41-year-old body this time around and will watch the game at home.

          2. After Dallas' Jamie Benn was selected in the 19th round, that meant that Logan Couture was the last man standing in the draft. For his trouble, the San Jose Sharks star was presented with a Honda Crosstour. In addition, he will have a $10,000 donation made in his name to the grassroots hockey program of his choice by the NHL Foundation and NHLPA Goals & Dreams.

          3. The one Senator who did not head to Team Alfredsson was Colin Greening, who will lead his group of rookies under Team Chara. Colorado Avalanche star Gabriel Landeskog, who was the second overall pick of the NHL draft, will lead his contingent under Team Alfredsson.

          4. Ever since the NHL went back to the East vs. West format in 2003, and switched to the draft format last season, the NHL All-Star Game has averaged a total of 16.8 goals over the past six showcases. The All-Star teams have topped the 20-goal mark three times in that span, including the last two years.

PREDICTION: Team Chara 12, Team Alfredsson 10

Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Connecticut Huskies

At first glance the trends would point to a convincing win for Connecticut when it hosts Note Dame on Sunday afternoon. The Huskies are 10-1 at home this season, 8-1 all-time against the Fighting Irish inside the XL Center, and they won by 14 at Note Dame on Jan. 14.

However, the two teams seem to be going in opposite directions at the moment. Connecticut has lost two consecutive games (0-2 ATS) and four of its last six (2-4 ATS). The defending NCAA champs are coming off a 13-point home setback to Cincinnati and a three-point loss at Tennessee. Notre Dame has won two in a row, including a 67-58 victory at then-No. 1 Syracuse last Saturday followed by a 55-42 road win at Seton Hall on Wednesday.

A big reason for the Irish's recent turnaround is the play of 6'9'' forward Jack Cooley, who recorded double-doubles against both Syracuse (17 points, 10 rebounds) and Seton Hall (13 points and 11 rebounds). Cooley played at least 34 minutes in both games and added two blocks in each contest.

Connecticut will continue to be without guard Ryan Boatright, who has been sidelined since January 9 due to eligibility issues. Boatright is averaging 10.2 points and 3.5 assists in 10 games this season.

                    Pick: Notre Dame

Michigan Wolverines at Ohio State Buckeyes

Ohio State has been an unstoppable force at home this season. The Buckeyes are a perfect 15-0 on their home floor, including 8-2 ATS. They are 5-0 ATS in their last five in Columbus and crushing opponents by an average of 27 points in that span.

Similarly, Michigan has been stellar at home this year but it is just 1-4 in road games. The Wolverines destroyed Nebraska away from home last weekend but their two previous road tests saw them lose to Indiana and Illinois while failing to cover the spread both times.

For the Buckeyes, big man Jared Sullinger (17.3 ppg, 9.3 rpg) is healthy and heating up. He has scored in double-figures in 10 consecutive games and he recorded his first double-double (20 points, 13 rebounds) in his last five outings this week in a 24-point home win over Penn State.

"He looks a little quicker, and he is shooting threes just enough (so that) you have to guard him," Michigan head coach John Beilein said of Sullinger. "It's always a concern when you have a guy who can pick and pop and roll, both of them. It's a big roll coming down there, a big pop you have to go get. We'll be working on that to defend both."

                    Pick: Ohio State

Game of the day: Chicago Bulls at Miami Heat
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Bulls at Miami Heat (-4.5, 191.5)

                          THE STORY
: One of the most hotly anticipated rematches finally hits the hardcourt Sunday when the Chicago Bulls visit the Miami Heat.

It's the first meeting between the NBA powerhouses since last season's Eastern Conference final, won by the Heat in five decisive games. Not much changed for either team in the offseason, and both clubs are off to predictably strong starts.

The Bulls have the best record in the East, already own a 3.5-game lead in the Central Division and are an impressive 8-3 on the road. Chicago is coming off a 107-100 triumph over the visiting Milwaukee Bucks behind a season-high 34 points from reigning MVP Derrick Rose. Sunday marks the kickoff of a marathon nine-game road trip for the Bulls, who won't play again at the United Center until Feb. 14.

Their first opponent on the trek may be their toughest, as they encounter a Heat squad finally back at full strength after missing guard Dwyane Wade for six games with an ankle injury. He made an impressive return Friday night, scoring 28 points as the Heat rolled past the New York Knicks 99-89 for their third consecutive victory.

                          TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, ABC

LINE: The Heat opened as 4.5-point favorites. The total opended at 191.5.

ABOUT THE BULLS (17-4, 12-9 ATS): With mixed martial arts and other activities taking over the United Center for the next two weeks, Chicago faces the longest road trip any team in the league will endure this season. As for Sunday's East final rematch, Rose says it's no big deal. "It's another game because it's the next game," he said. "We're not worried about all the hype. We know that people are going to try to blow it up to be this championship game and all that. But we're not worried about that.

ABOUT THE HEAT (14-5, 8-11 ATS): Wade wasted no time getting back into the swing of things, hammering home an early dunk that showed everyone his ankle is just fine. "I just tried to be aggressive, after being out for a while, one of the best ways to get your rhythm is to attack the basket," he said afterward. Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra said the club opted to keep Wade out longer than it might have in years past in order to ensure he was completely healthy.

                          TRENDS:

                          * Bulls are 1-4 ATS in the last five meetings in Miami.
                          * Bulls are 0-4 ATS in the last four meetings.
                          * Bulls are 7-2 ATS in their last nine road games.
                          * Heat are 0-4 ATS in their last four games overall.

                          BUZZER BEATERS:

                          1. Chicago won all three regular-season meetings in 2010-11.

                          2. Wade, a Chicago native, averages 22.2 points in 26 career games against the Bulls.

                          3. Chicago is 11-2 against Eastern Conference foes, while the Heat are 10-2.

                          PREDICTION: Heat 90, Bulls 88

                            Indiana Pacers at Orlando Magic

The Pacers and Magic just faced each other on Tuesday in Indiana, where Orlando dominated 102-83. You wouldn't think a lot could change in just a few days to turn the tide all the way in the Pacers' favor, but that is exactly the case.

Orlando followed up the win with an eight-point home loss to Boston on Thursday and a humiliating 93-67 road loss at New Orleans on Friday. Furthermore, the victory over Indiana was preceded by a shocking 87-56 road loss to the Celtics.

“Looked like guys didn’t want to play,” Dwight Howard vented after getting routed by the Hornets. “I told them at halftime, 'If you don’t want to play, just stay in the locker room.' It doesn’t make sense for a team we should beat to just demolish us. It hurts me to get out there and play your hardest. I expect everybody to play the same. I’m not calling anybody out by no means because we all have to get better."

Howard, of course, was calling out his teammates...and he could be down a few teammates on Sunday. Ryan Anderson (calf) and Jameer Nelson (jaw) are both listed as questionable.

                            Pick: Pacers

Los Angeles Clippers at Denver Nuggets (-6, 204.5)

The Nuggets are 14-5 and trailing only Oklahoma City and Chicago in the overall NBA standings as of Saturday night.

They are positively on fire heading into Sunday's home date with the Clippers. Denver has won six in a row (5-1 ATS), including five on the road and its last two by a combined 44 points. George Karl's squad hammered Sacramento 122-93 on Wednesday and drubbed Toronto 96-81 at home on Friday.

The Nuggets could be without Ty Lawson, who is questionable with a left ankle sprain sustained on Wednesday at Sacramento. He missed Friday's blowout of the Raptors, but that only opened the door for shooting guard Rudy Fernandez. Fernandez played a season-high 33 minutes and poured in a season-high 23 points.

"No, I don't think so; I'm just going day by day to see how it feels," Lawson said on Friday when asked if he could miss up to a week. "It's feeling better than (on Wednesday). We're not missing a beat. Andre (Miller) is a seasoned point guard, one of the best point guards out there."

The Clippers have been up-and-down of late, alternating wins and losses over their last six; resulting in a 3-3 record (3-3 ATS)

                            Pick: Nuggets
