Friday’s betting tips: Suns still a hot under bet

    Who’s hot

NBA: The under is 6-1 in the Suns’ last seven road games and 13-5 in their last 18 overall.

NBA: Philadelphia is 9-2 against the spread in its last 11 home games.

NBA: The under is 7-3-1 in Indiana’s last 11.

NCAAB: Manhattan is 22-7-1 against the spread in its last 30.

NCAAB: Yale is 10-2 against the number in its last 12 meetings with Harvard.

    Who’s not

NBA: Detroit is 4-14 against the spread in its last 18 overall.

NBA: San Antonio is 1-4 against the number in its last five meetings with Minnesota.

NBA: New York is 5-16 against the spread in its last 21 overall.

NCAAB: Marist has dropped five straight games against the spread.

NCAAB: Fairfield is 1-5-1 against the spread in its last seven.

    Key stat

12.7 – Siena Saints forward O.D. Anosike leads the nation averaging 12.7 rebounds per game and also leads his team in scoring (14.9), field goal percentage (51.3), and steals (1.2). Siena hosts Marist Friday night.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Al Jefferson, Utah Jazz – Jefferson is considered a game-time decision for Friday’s meeting with the Chicago Bulls after hurting his ankle during Wednesday’s practice. He’s scheduled for an MRI Thursday. Jefferson leads the team averaging 18.3 points and 9.4 rebounds per game.

    Game of the day

New York Knicks at Miami Heat (N/A)

    Notable quotable

“My opinion? I really hope the Giants – I just hope they just put a thrashing on the Patriots. I really do. To lose to a team like that the way we played ... we played a good game. The dinking and the dunking man? It’s just not going to happen. They are going to have to take shots down the field. I think the Giants watch our film and watch the film of the season. They gotta take away their big time players. (Tight end Rob) Gronkowski, I think he is coming off that ankle, so I don’t know if he will be 100 percent." – Baltimore Ravens tight end Bernard Pollard about the Super Bowl matchup between the New England Patriots and New York Giants.

    Notes and tips

Wide receiver Hakeem Nicks was among seven players who did not practice for the New York Giants on Thursday. Nicks suffered a shoulder injury in New York's overtime win over San Francisco in the NFC Championship Game. Giants coach Tom Coughlin said he expected all of his players to be ready go for the Super Bowl matchup with the New England Patriots. Nicks has been spectacular in the postseason. He was limited to five receptions for 55 yards against the 49ers, but has 18 catches and four touchdowns in New York's three playoff victories.

Milwaukee Bucks center Andrew Bogut will be sidelined indefinitely with a fractured left ankle. Bogut was injured in Wednesday's game against Houston when he landed on the foot of Rockets guard Kyle Lowry. Bogut has battled injuries the past two seasons, most notably from a fall toward the end of the 2009-10 season in which he hurt his right hand and elbow in a hard fall to the floor. The former No. 1 overall pick in 2005, Bogut is averaging 11.3 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.0 blocked shots. The Bucks visit Chicago Friday.

Spencer Levin and Kyle Stanley each shot a 10-under-par 62 to share the lead Thursday after the first round of the Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego. Both are set at +1400 to win the tournament. Levin birdied eight of his final 10 holes in his bogey-free round and Stanley offset his lone bogey with an eagle at the 18th hole on the North Course at Torrey Pines. Bill Haas was alone in second place at 9-under 63 despite a double bogey at the par-3 sixth. He had 11 birdies in his round and is currently pegged as the tournament favorite at +800.

      Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- North Carolina pounded NC State 74-55, as Mark Gottfried found out why no one wanted the Wolfpack job; ceiling is to finish third in ACC, behind Carolina/Duke until Coach K/Roy Williams retire.

-- Celtics were down 27 in first half, came back to beat Orlando for the second time in four nights. Magic led by 21 at the half.

-- Why is Boston College in the ACC? They're bad in football/hoops, and would be better off back in the Big East, no?

-- Long Beach State stayed unbeaten in Big West with an OT win at Cal-Riverside, which led for most of the game.

-- Colorado won its first Pac-12 road game, 74-50 at USC team that will be looking for a new head coach in a few weeks.

-- Stat of the Day, and its a good one: NBA favorites who didn't play the previous two nights are 21-6 against spread. Underdogs? 9-13-1.

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.........

      13) OK, so my DirecTV wasn't getting a signal early Thursday night, bad news for a college basketball night in January, so I call DirecTV and get a woman in Mississippi. We have this exchange......

Me: "It snowed a little and I have no signal on my DirecTV."
Her: "There must be snow on the dish. Is your satellite dish on the roof?"
      Me: "Yes, yes it is,"
Her: "You need to wait until the snow is off the dish."
Me: "I'm in New York, its January; it could take two months."
Her: "Then if you can, you should get the snow off the dish. Just don't hit the dish like you're swinging a baseball bat."

Alrighty then. I go outside, get on a stepladder, use a long brush to get a little slush off the dish, and presto, I'm a TV repairman. Problem solved, I watch TV for the next six hours (and counting) and all is well.

      12) Odd situation in Minnesota, where Kevin Love wanted to sign up for five years, but the Timberwolves would only give him four. Not really sure why. He did sign the 4-year deal, though. He's worth every penny.

      11) Tampa Bay hired Greg Schiano? Really? Wow. Maybe he’ll do a great job; he upgraded Rutgers’ program, with the help of large infusions of New Jersey taxpayers’ cash, but did you ever watch the Scarlet Knights play and think to yourself, “Boy, this guy would make a really good NFL coach.”? Didn’t think so.

      10) Schiano leaving Rutgers six days before Signing Day totally screws the Scarlet Knights, who won’t have enough time to conduct a proper coaching search; they’re almost forced to hire from within, to keep this year’s recruiting class as intact as possible. Then there’s the possibility that Schiano takes some of his staff with him to Tampa Bay; that would further mess things up.

      9) Odd fact of the day: Dick Vitale went to high school with Schiano’s parents in New Jersey.

      8) If I owned a racehorse, I’d name it Cold Pizza. Imagine horses coming down the stretch and the race caller yelling into the microphone, “Cold Pizza heats up to win by three lengths!!!!” It has a certain ring to it.

      7) I’ll watch almost any game on TV, but not the Pro Bowl. Never, ever. I might watch the WNBA before I watched the Pro Bowl. Maybe.

      6) Much like baseball home run hitting contest, NHL’s skills competition is more fun than the actual All-Star Game. You forget these guys are actually on ice skates.

      5) Ichiro Suzuki might not bat leadoff for the Mariners this year; looks like they want to bat him second in lineup. Doesn’t get on base enough to bat leadoff anymore. Interesting story to follow. Egos are involved.

      4) Tom Izzo won his 400th game Wednesday night; Michigan State has had only two basketball coaches over the last 36 years, Izzo and Jud Heathcoat.

      3) NBA TV ratings are up 31% over this time LY, even with a contracted schedule and the Knicks/Lakers playing like they’d rather not make the playoffs. By the way, they’re still charging $170 for DirecTV's package, even though the contracted season is already a month old, and the season was 16 games shorter than LY to begin with. Greed knows no bounds.

      2) Speaking of which, the human scum that own Exxon-Mobil raised gasoline prices 8 cents a gallon just this week; these greedy bastards are now charging $3.73 a gallon. Any incumbent politician should be made to answer why this price gouging is allowed.

      1) Happy birthday to the great Bob Uecker, who turned 77 Thursday.

Best bets on ice: NHL first half wagering review

We’ve hit the All-Star break, and though you have a neat, little contest to play on Sunday in Ottawa, if you like, it’s probably time to start looking ahead to the second half. Will the Rangers slow down? Will the Flyers get healthy? Will the Kings ever start scoring again?

All good questions as we gaze into the NHL 2012 crystal ball.

Best money team: New York Rangers (+20.10 units)

Brad Richards and Marian Gaborik have supplied the offense, Henrik Lundqvist has provided the goaltending, and coach John Tortorella has supplied the theater as the Rangers have been the league’s best team in so many ways. Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Boston – perhaps the three biggest favorites in the East as the season opened – have battled injuries and inconsistency, and the Rangers have pounced.

They even have a flair for the dramatic, too. They posted a 3-2 win over the Flyers in the Winter Classic, announcing to all of North America that they were here to stay. All signs point to a fun-filled spring in Manhattan.

Worst money team: Buffalo Sabres (-28.77 units)

The Sabres looked as if they’d won the Stanley Cup on Tuesday in New Jersey. A 2-1 shootout victory over the Devils in dramatic fashion put a positive end to an awfully negative first half and perhaps showed the league Buffalo will have at least a little fight in the second half. After all, it can’t get any worse.

The team with the league’s highest payroll has received an insufficient season from goaltender Ryan Miller and not enough return on long-term investments Ville Leino and Christian Ehrhoff. You can forget about the postseason dreams the rest of the way. Best thing the Sabres can do now is try to avoid the East basement.

Best home team: St. Louis Blues (21-3-4)

Can a coach win the Jack Adams Trophy for a half season? OK, maybe that’s a stretch, but it is hard to believe the reclamation project Ken Hitchcock adopted when he took the St. Louis gig on Nov. 7 and what he’s done with it.

The Blues are nearly unbeatable at home and have 65 points at the break. And that’s including a two-game losing streak to close the half. It's been a team effort.

David Backes has 16 goals, Alexander Steen is a plus-20, and goaltenders Brian Elliott and Jaroslav Halak have a 1.69 and 2.04 goals-against average, respectively. There’s a long way to go and the West is loaded, but the Blues seem to have it all. And whatever they don’t have, Hitchcock seems to find a way around it.

Worst home team: Columbus Blue Jackets (8-13-3)

The end finally came for coach Scott Arniel this month. A good guy, and a good hockey mind in a bad situation, he just couldn’t find the right solution for the Blue Jackets. Truth is, no one may be able to find that.

The team with just one playoff appearance in its history can’t seem to get out of its own way this season and the boatload of offseason moves – acquiring forward Jeff Carter and defenseman James Wisniewski, among them -- just haven’t worked out.

The Blue Jackets are a mess on home ice, and they lost four in a row overall to end the first half. There aren’t many better fade plays out there than going against Columbus in Columbus, despite the hefty price tag.

Best road team: Philadelphia Flyers (18-7-2)

The injuries just keep on coming for Philadelphia, but the Flyers keep on chugging. While not in the region of the Rangers just yet, they are only three points out in the Atlantic Division with plenty of time left.

The loss of defenseman Chris Pronger has been glaring, and injuries to James van Riemsdyk, Claude Giroux and Danny Briere have truly been costly. But despite another shaky goaltending situation, the Flyers have made the most of their trips, and seem to be enjoying when they get out of the belly of the beast known as the City of Brotherly Love.

Coach Peter Laviolette is getting the most out of his makeshift lineup and it just goes to show you how deep an organization general manager Paul Holmgren has built.

Worst road team: Carolina Hurricanes (5-13-6)

This title truly belongs to Columbus (5-17-3), but we have to spread the blame around, right? The Blue Jackets, after all, have enough problems.

The Hurricanes, with Kirk Muller now behind the bench, haven’t been able to figure things out away from Raleigh. It’s surprising because they do have offensive touch and a good goaltending situation. But it’s just not all coming together this year, as they entered the break with 45 points, tied with the Islanders for last in the East.

Goaltender Cam Ward has 18 wins, but also 17 losses, and the leading goal scorer Tuomo Ruutu has just 15. That’s not going to get it done, home or away.

Best over team: Tampa Bay Lightning (31-16)

Can you believe it? The team that reminded us all of the old neutral-zone trap Devils last season is the best over buy in the league? Well, with goal scorers aplenty needing to take more chances because the team is usually trailing in the third period, more and more Lightning games are going over the total.

In fact, they entered the break having gone over in seven of their last eight games. Steven Stamkos has 32 goals, Vincent Lecavalier has 19, and Martin St. Louis has 12. And when you combine that with a team 3.23 goals-against average, you are going to end up on over-land more times than not.

Best under team: Los Angeles Kings (11-27)

Weekly readers of Pucking the Trends know all about the Kings by now. Los Angeles is going to play tight-checking, take-little-risk, dump-and-chase hockey whether you like it or not.

St. Louis (12-26) and Detroit (20-29) are close, but you can't beat the Kings in the under-world. Los Angeles entered the break with the under going 3-0-3 in its last six while scoring one goal or fewer in three of the last five games.

Anze Kopitar has 15 goals, but the list of players who haven't touched double digits yet - Justin Williams, Simon Gagne and Dustin Penner among them - is too long to think Los Angeles is going to snap out of this style anytime soon.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NCAAB betting trends: Five teams cashing under bets
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Any college coach worth his salt will tell you that a pile high-fliers and long-range snipers won’t get you very far unless you can play some defense.

With a quiet NCAAB schedule set for Friday, we thought we would take a look at some of the better defensive teams in the nation - or at least those that are cashing a ton of under bets.

All stats current prior to Thursday’s action.

                  UAB Blazers (over/under record: 1-16-1)

UAB ranks 33rd in the nation allowing 60.2 points per game while forcing opponents to shoot just 40.2 percent from the floor (58th). The Blazers have checked in under the total in six straight contests and should continue to be a strong under bet with their rotten offense.

UAB averages only 58.2 points per game and needed overtime to crack the 60-point plateau just once over its last six games. The Blazers host East Carolina Saturday evening.

                  Virginia Cavaliers (over/under record: 1-12)

If you haven’t heard about Virginia’s defense yet, you’re obviously still stuck in all-out football mode. The Cavs allow just 50.2 points per game (No. 2 nationally) and also sit among the top five in defensive 3-point percentage and defensive rebounds.

They held Duke to 61 points and Michigan to 58 – which was also the only game they played over the total by putting up 70 points at the offensive end against the Wolverines.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish (over/under record: 3-12-2)

The Irish have played over just once since Dec. 10 and are coming off a win over Seton Hall that saw them hold the Pirates to 42 points, their lowest output since 2005.

With Tim Abromaitis out for the year, Notre Dame doesn’t have many offensive weapons. Jack Cooley is a force inside, but the Irish aren’t doing themselves any favors in shooting only 32.6 percent from beyond the arc. The Irish visit UConn Sunday afternoon.

                  Harvard Crimson (over/under: 3-10)

No. 23 Harvard is going to pressure you on defense and make you earn absolutely every point you get every time Tommy Amaker’s squad takes the floor. The Crimson give up only 54.1 points per game and rank third in the country in averaging 25.1 defensive rebounds per contest.

They are leading the Ivy League and coming off an ugly win over Dartmouth – unless you had the under. Harvard held Dartmouth to 38 total points on 31.7 percent shooting, cashing under bets for the sixth time in its last seven games.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons (over/under: 4-12-1)

The Demon Deacons are struggling at both ends on the floor, putting up 67.2 points per game while allowing 70 points a game. Wake routinely sees totals in the mid-130s or 140s and has played over the total just once over the last seven games and was hammered 75-52 by Florida State in its last game.

The Demon Deacons visit Clemson Saturday afternoon.

NBA Top 4: It pays to back balanced offenses
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Carmelo Anthony is one of the 10 best basketball players on the planet but his team is the worst bet in the NBA.

Even weirder, Melo’s old mates in Colorado are thriving in his absence. The Denver Nuggets are 31-12 straight up and 33-9-1 against the spread since they shipped Anthony to the New York Knicks last February.

They say you need star player(s) to win championships in the NBA but there are a number of clubs proving that sharing the rock is the best way to win in the regular season, especially with the condensed schedule.

Here are four teams who boast balanced offensive attacks:

                          Denver Nuggets (13-5 ATS)

George Karl’s squad leads the league in scoring (106.4 ppg) and yet top point producer Danilo Gallinari (17.7 ppg) accounts for just 20 percent of Denver’s offensive output.

Ty Lawson runs the point but plays effectively next to veteran guard Andre Miller. Six Denver players average double figures in points, including super sixth-man Al Harrington who shoots better than 50 percent from the field.

“This is more of a “George team’' than what they had before,'' Sixers coach Doug Collins told the New York Daily News last week. “George [Karl] always wants to run and move the ball and play fast. Carmelo did a lot of great things for that organization and then he decided he wanted to go play somewhere else. When you make a trade like that, you don’t know how it will work out for you.''

                          Philadelphia 76ers (12-5-1 ATS)

Speaking of Doug Collins, the Sixers are another star-less team climbing the ladder in the Eastern Conference.

Philly’s leading scorer (Lou Williams) doesn’t start and its best player (Andre Iguodala) is a defensive stopper, not a knock-down shooter.

Eight Philadelphia players average 9 points or more per game and six of those guys shoot better than .450 from the field.

The Sixers are 2-3 SU and ATS over their last five games but they should get back to their winning ways once big man Spencer Hawes returns to the lineup.

Don’t forget Philly went 46-35-1 against the number last season.

                          Indianapolis Pacers (10-7 ATS)

The Pacers possess a nice inside/outside combo with Roy Hibbert and Danny Granger. The duo leads Indy in scoring but there is a solid supporting cast if Granger is having an off night or Hibbert is in foul trouble.

Power forward David West is fitting in perfectly for the Pacers and Paul George is silky smooth going to the rack or dialing it up from downtown.

The ball doesn’t come back out once Tyler Hansbrough gets hands on it but the UNC alum leads the team in free throw attempts per game and cans 80 percent of them.

                          San Antonio Spurs (9-10 ATS)

That ATS mark doesn’t really fit with the other three teams in the group, but a lot of that has to do with oddsmakers underrating the loss of Manu Ginobili.

Ginobili is, without question, the Spurs’ best player and the engine that makes the offense go. Sure he only played five games before he broke a bone his shooting hand, but he’s still leading John Hollinger’s Player Efficiency Rating board.

Tony Parker is enjoying a fantastic season and a number of role players are upping their games to make up for Ginobili’s absence.

Nine different players have led the team in scoring in a game and six different players have top the score sheet in San Antonio’s last six games.

Pick 'n' roll: Friday's best NBA bets
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington Wizards at Houston Rockets (-9.5, 197.5)

The Washington Wizards gave newly-appointed coach Randy Wittman a warm welcome in his first game behind the bench, hammering Charlotte 92-75 as 7.5-point favorites.

It was their best defensive showing of the season and it snapped a skid that saw them win just once in their previous eight games. While former coach Flip Saunders was more of a player’s coach (read: pushover), Wittman isn’t going to put up poor efforts.

"If they want to play, they are going to have to be accountable," Wittman told reporters of his team. "I think every player wants to play. If they don't, we've got to find a way to get them out of here. That's pretty easy, to be honest with you. Doing your job and doing it the way it needs to be done, you'll play. If not, I'll find somebody else to play."

That’s the direct approach this team needs. The Wizards have a lot of issues, but you can at least expect them to put in an honest effort for the next while.

                            Pick: Wizards

New Jersey Nets at Cleveland Cavaliers (-3, 191)

A couple of days after the Nets were torched by the Bulls when they welcomed Derrick Rose back to the lineup, Deron Williams wasn’t about to let another victory slip past his team.

Williams scored 17 of his 34 points in the fourth quarter and overtime to help New Jersey to a 97-90 win at Philadelphia with the Nets set as 11.5-point underdogs.

“At the end of the game, we basically put the ball in Deron’s hands and said, ‘Take us home’ and that’s what he did,” coach Avery Johnson told reporters.

Williams has been on a major hot streak lately, averaging 21.4 points and 9.4 assists per game over his last five outings.

Cleveland is coming off an upset against the Knicks and did cover against the Heat earlier this week, but is still allowing almost 103 points per game over the last five.

                            Pick: Nets

                              Milwaukee at Chicago
The Bulls look to bounce back from their 95-90 loss to Indiana and build on their 30-10-1 ATS record in their last 41 games following a SU defeat. Chicago is the pick (-10 1/2) according to Dunkel, which has the Bulls favored by 17. Dunkel Pick: Chicago (-10 1/2). Here are all of today's picks
