Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Trent Lockett, Arizona State – Lockett leads the Sun Devils in scoring (13.9), rebounding (6.4) and steals (26), but suffered a severely sprained ankle on Jan. 14 and hasn’t played since. He hasn’t practiced yet this week, though coach Herb Sendeck hasn’t ruled him out for Thursday’s game against Washington.

Notes and tips

The New England Patriots released their first injury report for the Super Bowl on Wednesday, and tight end Rob Gronkowski's name was the most notable on it. Gronkowski was listed as unable to practice due to an ankle injury suffering in Sunday's AFC Championship Game win over Baltimore. The Boston Herald reported that Gronkowski is dealing with ligament damage in his left ankle. Gronkowski was hurt on a 23-yard reception in the final minute of the third quarter. The second-year tight end later returned to the game, telling reporters he went to get the ankle re-taped. He finished with five receptions for 87 yards but did not make a catch after he was hurt. Gronkowski has had a monster season, setting records for tight ends for touchdowns (17) and receiving yards (1,327).

The Orlando Magic rank second in the Association hitting 39.6 percent of their shots from beyond the arc. So it stands to reason that if you can contain Dwight Howard inside while pressuring the perimeter, you’re going to be in good shape. That’s something the Celtics have figured out. They held Orlando to franchise lows of 56 points and 24.6 percent shooting from the floor Monday. "We have trouble scoring against them," Magic guard J.J. Redick told reporters. "That's not a secret. They're a great defense, and we've had so many battles with them that they've kind of figured us out." Orlando, which is an 8-point favorite Thursday, is 1-3-1 against the spread in its last five meetings with Boston.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Best game of night was in Boise, where #12 UNLV was challenged by the host Broncos before winning in OT, 77-72. Good ballgame.

-- Missouri got upset 79-72 at Oklahoma State; Cowboys really only used six guys (7th guy played six minutes).

-- Alabama had a bad loss, losing 56-54 at South Carolina.

-- Roger Goodell gets a 5-year, $13M a year contract extenstion to stay as NFL Commissioner. We think the commish does a fine job.

-- Lakers beat the Clippers 96-91; Ron Artest played 38 minutes, had only 3 points, but Lakers were +20 while he was on the floor.

-- Um, why was William Shatner's character "killed off" in the Priceline commercials? Is he coming back from dead with new travel deals?

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind.......

13) Mike Ilitch owns the Detroit Tigers; he’s 82 and he’d like to win a World Series fairly soon, for obvious reasons, which is why he over-extended a little bit in giving Prince Fielder $214M this week. Between Fielder/Cabrera/Verlander, Detroit will be paying three guys $65M a year for the next three years, which makes it logical that Victor Martinez will likely wind up getting traded when his knee gets better.

12) Next Wednesday (February 1) is National Signing Day in college football; ESPNU and CBS College Sports both have eight hours of live coverage, starting at 9am. This is a very big deal in the south; up here in the northeast, not so much. Games in 2015-16 will be decided by what happens next week.

11) So Hank Haney wrote a book about Eldrick Woods, which seems controversial until you’re told he isn’t discussing Eldrick’s personal life, just his golf. Oh. Thanks but no thanks.

10) Someone took a survey is which 19% of those who responded said they would miss a funeral to watch the Super Bowl. That’s ridiculous; the Super Bowl is played on a Sunday; there are no funerals on Sundays.

9) Was watching a replay of an old March Madness game last week, UNC-Wilmington/Maryland, and I heard Billy Packer’s voice for the first time in a long time. CBS made a mistake getting rid of him, because they don’t have any other analysts who are as good as he was.

Guess they thought people just got sick of listening to him, which I’m not sure was true. Sometimes he seemed like your grumpy uncle, but thats not always a bad thing.

8) If you break down the 49ers’ +28 turnover ratio this year, you’ll see they picked off 23 passes, recovered 15 fumbles, while throwing only five picks themselves, in a remarkable season for Alex Smith. +28 is going to be tough to duplicate next season.

7) Teams that forced the most fumbles this season: Ravens, with 21, followed by Vikings/Jaguars/49ers/Jets, all with 19.

Least fumbles forced? Chargers/Raiders, with 7 each.

6) Best teams in turnover ratio this year:
49ers, +28, Packers +24, Patriots +17. Lot of wins in that group.

5) Teams with worst turnover margin:
Bucs -16, Redskins/Eagles -14, Cardinals/Steelers -13. Not so many wins in that group, except for Pittsburgh.

4) Hard to believe, but the Saints fumbled only six times in 16 regular season games.

3) Odds on Detroit Tigers winning the World Series dropped from 14-1 to 9-1 as soon as the Prince Fielder signing was announced.

2) Former NFL QB Jon Kitna is going back to his old high school in Washington to become a Math teacher and looks like the frontrunner to be the school’s new football coach. Good to see someone retire with a good head on his shoulders and a plan for the future.

Bet by the numbers: Super Bowl XLVI betting trends and stats

With two weeks to analyze and over-analyze every bit of statistical information connected to Super Bowl XLVI, bettors could go mad like Russell Crowe in A Beautiful Mind. So before you start writing stats and figures all over your windows, let Covers Expert Marc Lawrence do the heavy number crunching for the Big Game.

Take a quick look how New England and New York arrived to Super Bowl XLVI and at some of the more interesting trends that have occurred in Super Bowls past.

All results are ATS (against the spread) in Super Bowl games since the 1980 season, unless noted otherwise.

Common denominators

These two teams squared off against one another’s division in 2011 and the results were, for all intents and purposes, diametrically opposite.

New England was 3-1 SU (straight up) but 1-3 ATS and 1-3 ITS (in the stats) in games against the NFC East while New York hit a grand slam against the AFC East, going 4-0 SU, 2-1-1 ATS and 3-1 ITS.

Additionally, the Patriots’ opponents combined for an overall record of 141-157 (.473) this season while New York took on foes that ended up 176-139 (.559).

Advantage: Giants

The "R" word

Revenge has been a factor in Super Bowl games.

New York upset New England in Gillette Stadium as a 9-point underdog this season, despite being outgained by 77 yards in the contest. That set up a “double-revenge” incentive for Tom Brady’s bunch after seeing dreams of a perfect season ruined in a 17-14 loss to the Giants in Super Bowl XLII.

Interestingly, teams playing with same-season loss revenge are 7-5 SU in Super Bowls, including 3-0 the last three games.

Revenge has been a staple for the Patriots especially under the tandem of Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. The Dynamic Duo is 43-13 SU and 36-17-3 ATS in games when avenging a loss, including 18-3 SU and 16-4-1 ATS when playing off three or more wins in a row.

In addition, Belichick and Brady have lost five playoff games together. They are 2-0 SU during the postseason in playoff loss revenge games, defeating Denver and Baltimore this campaign

Advantage: Patriots

Faux favorites

The public loves backing favorites, and when it comes to the Super Bowl it’s like putting kids in a candy store. They go crazy.

The public today suffers from a bad case of diabetes. That’s because overloading on these super-sweet favorites has proven to be an unhealthy experience, with favorites sporting a 20-11 SU and 13-16-2 ATS record, including 5-9-2 ATS the last 15 games.

Favorites (read: New England) taking on opponents off back-to-back SU and ATS wins are just 13-9 SU and 7-13-2 ATS.

The last sixteen favorites to score 30 or fewer points are 2-14-1 ATS, an interesting stat considering that Tom Coughlin’s teams have surrendered more than 28 points in only three of 15 postseason games while Bill Belichick’s troops have tallied more than 28 points in just six of 24 playoff contests.

Advantage: Giants

20/20 vision

Speaking of scoring, putting points on the scoreboard is obviously vital to succeeding in this game.

Those that do, win the game and the money. Those that don’t, lose the game and their shirt. It’s just that simple.

And 20 points appears to be the cut-line.

That’s because, since 1977, teams that fail to score 20 points in the Super Bowl are 1-22 SU and 3-19-1 ATS. Teams that tally 21 or more points are 30-11 SU and 27-11-3 ATS.

Ironically, the only team to score fewer than 20 points and win a Super Bowl in that span was New York in its 17-14 win over New England in Super Bowl XLII.

Twenty-seven points virtually assures a victory as teams putting 27 or more on the scoreboard are 26-1 SU and 23-3-1 ATS dating back to 1977.

Advantage: Even

Seed me

Sixteen top-seeded teams from the AFC have made it to the title game since 1977, but only four were crowned champions – the most recent being the 2003 New England Patriots.

No. 1 seeds are 6-12-1 ATS since 1990, including 2-8 SU and ATS the last 10. In fact, the last No.1 to win a Super Bowl, playing a non-No. 1 seed, was the 1999 St. Louis Rams.

And going back the last 16 years, the higher-seeded team has struggled mightily against the spread in the big game, going an eye-opening 1-12-2 ATS following the Steelers failure against the Packers last year.

Advantage: Giants

Conference call

Like the National League’s one-time mastery over the American League, the NFC has held the upper hand over the AFC in Super Bowl games since the 1980 season, going 20-11 SU and 19-10-2 ATS.

However, the NFC is only 5-9 SU and 7-6-1 ATS of late in the last 13 Super Bowl contests.

One final note: this marks the ninth time in 10 years the AFC opened as the favorite.

Pro Bowl odds: Line and total already on the move

If you haven’t heard, here is a football game this weekend. Well, sort of.

Most oddsmakers opened the annual NFL Pro Bowl with the NFC set as a 3.5-point favorite and the total at 73 points.

Neither of those lines stayed on the board very long.

“Just about everybody is serving NFC -4 right now with a 74-point total,” Jimmy Vaccaro, Lucky’s Sportsbook oddsmaker, told *********** Wednesday evening.

Many sharp bettors stay far away from this game, but Vaccaro hopes to see a little more action this year with the game being played the week before the Super Bowl, instead of the week after.

“At least it fills the void,” Vaccaro says. “We never expect much action on this game, but at least this way we’ll get a few casual players and some parlay action on Sunday.”

The over is traditionally a popular wager in this game, which often turns into a glorified flag football matchup. But this big number takes a little of the luster of an over wager.

“It’s not like 10 years ago when we could put a 55 or 60-point total on the board,” Vaccaro says. “At 74 we’re hoping to get a little under action, though really it’s hard to know. We’ll just monitor it leading up to Sunday.”

Gottfried's first trip to Chapel Hill with State team that won three in row, eight of last nine games. Wolfpack is 2-1 on road, 3-4 vs top 100 teams, winning at both Wake Forest/Miami in ACC road tilts. Tar Heels lost PG Strickland, are at home for first time in 16 days- last seven home wins are by 15+.

Nebraska is 2-6 in its first year in Big Dozen, losing all three games on road by 31-5-5 points; Cornhuskers turn ball over 22.4% of time, shoot just 31.7% behind arc, a bad combo. Iowa is 3-4 on conference, winning twice on road, but losing two of three at home- their conference wins are by 7-2-16 points. New Mexico State had a 6-game win streak snapped at Hawai'i in last game; they're 2-0 as a WAC home favorite this year, winning games by 12-20 points.

Long Beach State won its last four games with Cal-Riverside, but is 1-3 in its last four visits here, with LY's 82-76 win ending 3-game skid here. 49ers won at Cal Poly/UCSB last weekend, blowing Gauchos off their home court- they're 4-0 on Big West road, with nine points closest of the four wins. Riverside is 4-2 in Big West this year, with both losses by 11 points; they beat UCSB/CalPoly at home. Big West home underdogs are 4-6 against the spread this season.

Cal Poly-Pacific split last six meetings, with Mustangs winning two of last three visits here; Poly made 11 treys in row in its last game- they're 4-4 on road this season, just 3-4 in league play, though they've lost to Long Beach (twice) ad UCSB already. Big West home underdogs are 4-6 against the spread. Young/well-coached Pacific team is 2-4 in conference games, with losses by just 4-7-10-3 points; they're 0-2 vs top 100 clubs, losing by 42 to Stanford, 10 to Long Beach.

LMU is 7-0 vs spread in WCC games, losing by 4 at home to Gonzaga, 8 to BYU, also at home. St Mary's won its last ten games with LMU, winning last five visits to Gersten Pavilion by 16-31-13-18-23 points, but Lions are improved as any team on west coast, winning four of last five games. Lions are holding teams to 28.9% behind arc. Gaels are on 9-game winning treak, winning WCC road games by 29-6-16 points. WCC home underdogs of 10 or less points are 5-3 against the spread.

Colorado is 5-0 at home in Pac-12, 0-2 on road, losing in Bay Area by 7-20 points; Buffs' only road win in four tries this year was at Air Force in OT- they also lost by point at Colorado State. USC is 0-7 in conference, scoring 51.3 ppg, with home losses by 9-11-19 points. Weird thing is that Trojans stink despite being in top 10 in country in forcing foes to turn ball over (26.4%). Pac-12 home teams are 11-7 against spread when number is 4 or less points.

Washington State is 3-2 in last five games with Arizona, losing three of last four visits here, with losses by 12-10-9 points. Wazzu is 0-3 on the Pac-12 road, losing by 2-11-10 points, with red flag loss at awful Utah. This isn't an elite Arizona team, but they're 4-3 in Pac-12, winning three games by 11+ points- they're 5-2 vs spread in conference play, 3-1 if a favorite. Pac-12 single digit home favorites are 13-9 against the spread. Arizona's last two losses are by combined total of three points.

Tennessee Tech won its two games with Eastern Kentucky LY by 8-9 points, ending 0-5 series skid; Tech lost five of its last seven visits here, with losses by 2-2-18-5-18 points. EKU is 4-0 at home in OVC, but all four wins were by 5 or less points, or in OT. OVC home teams are 8-6 vs spread when number is 4 or less points. Tech is 4-3 in OVC, with three wins by 11+ points, but only OVC road win was at Tenn-Martin, worst team in league.

North Carolina has lost starting guard Dexter Strickland for the season after he tore his ACL in his right knee in the Tar Heels’ game at Virginia Tech. Strickland was only averaging eight points per game, but he was the catalyst for North Carolina’s transition game and he actually led the team while shooting 57 percent from the floor.

Strickland’s biggest impact came on the defensive end of the court as he was North Carolina’s best perimeter defender. Against teams with good guard play, North Carolina was vulnerable even with Strickland on the court. But now, that weakness will be exploited more.

North Carolina is 5-2 over/under away from Chapel Hill this season, and we expect more high-scoring games from the Tar Heels on the road without Strickland on the court, especially against teams with guards who can score the basketball.

Big Ten

Michigan has been playing the majority of the season without one of its better inside players after Jon Horford suffered a stress fracture in his foot back on December 10. Horford is set to return to the Wolverines’ lineup possibly this week according to head coach John Beilein.

“He's a little rusty as you can expect, but he has practiced with us the last two days. We'll continue to monitor him and see what he does,” Beilein told reporters.

Michigan is just 1-3 ATS in conference play as a favorite, so it will be interesting to see if Horford’s return gives the Wolverines a better defensive presence that will allow them to stretch some leads and earn some covers.

Big 12

Missouri is off to its best since 1981-82 when it opened that season at 19-1. The Tigers currently have 18 wins and that is very impressive considering they are playing with just seven scholarship players.

NCAA rules allow for 13 scholarship players, but Missouri only began the season with 10 guys before losing starting forward Laurence Bowers to a season-ending knee injury and losing two guys to transfer.

However, Missouri is thin in the frontcourt and they should struggle when facing teams that have talented inside players. We saw that in Missouri’s lone loss as Kansas State dominated the paint and out-rebounded the Tigers 36-22 en route to a 75-59 blowout win.

The Tigers are currently 10-4 ATS but with some big teams on the horizon, Missouri’s solid pointspread record might begin to incur some losses in the near future.

Big East

Pittsburgh was the only team in the Big East to win 10 or more league games in each of the last 10 seasons. That’s not going to happen this year as the Panthers are 0-7 SU in league play. Pittsburgh also had its 58-game home winning streak against non-conference opponents snapped by Long Beach State earlier this season.

A major reason for Pittsburgh’s decline is the fact that point guard Travon Woodall missed 11 games with a groin/abdominal injury. But Woodall returned for Pittsburgh’s last game and, since five of the Panthers’ nine losses have come by eight points or less, they may hold some pointspread value in the role of an underdog now that Woodall is back on the court.

Pac-12

Southern California will be without one of its best players for the rest of the season after forward Aaron Fuller underwent shoulder surgery. Fuller was averaging 10.6 points per game and the Trojans have just one other player (Maurice Jones) who averages more than eight points per game.

Southern Cal only has seven scholarship players on its roster now, which means walk-on Daniel Munoz will be inserted into the starting lineup. The Trojans have scored more than 60 points just six times this season - three of their seven ATS wins have come in those games.

In Pac-12 play, USC is just 2-2 ATS as a road underdog, so it will be interesting to see how it performs going forward now that Fuller has been lost for the season.

SEC

Tennessee’s season has taken a turn for the better since losing by 18 points at Memphis back on January 4. While the Vols have only won two of five games since then, they’ve been pointspread machines, going 4-1 ATS with their only non-cover occurring in overtime when they lost by four points at Georgia as 1.5-point underdogs.

A big reason for the improved play has been the defense. The Vols have held all five of those opponents to 65 points or less. Tennessee head coach Conzo Martin also made a lineup change and the Vols welcomed freshman sensation Jarnell Stokes to the court after he had to sit out until mid-January.

Tennessee still holds some pointspread value because it’s not winning games straight up, so keep an eye on the Vols going forward this season.

Indiana Hoosiers at Wisconsin Badgers (-7, 126)

Wisconsin goes for its fifth straight victory when it hosts No. 17 Indiana on Thursday. The No. 25 Badgers stumbled to a 1-3 start in the Big Ten, but have bounced back over the last two weeks, most recently in a 67-63 victory at Illinois on Sunday.

Despite their uneven play in the conference, the Badgers still lead the nation in points allowed (49.6), field goal percentage defense (35.9) and fewest turnovers (9.0). Their inconsistent offense, though, ranks only 10th in the Big Ten in scoring (65.6), 10th in shooting (43.5 percent) and 11th in assists (12.0).

Senior point guard Jordan Taylor leads Wisconsin with 14.1 points and 4.4 assists. The Badgers are shooting 70.8 percent from the foul line, a big drop from last year's NCAA-best 81.8 percent.

Meanwhile, Indiana leads the Big Ten in scoring (79.8), field goal percentage (50.0) and 3-point percentage (44.9).

This could go down to the wire.

Boston College Badgers at Virginia Cavaliers (-18, N/A)

Virginia was one of the nation’s most pleasant surprises in the non-conference season but will try to prevent another ACC stumble when it welcomes slumping Boston College on Thursday.

The No. 21 Cavaliers won 14 of their first 15 games but have dropped two of the last three, including a 47-45 home decision to Virginia Tech in which they shot a season-low 32.6 percent. That was Virginia’s first game without 7-foot senior center Assane Sene, who is expected to miss at least six weeks.

The Cavaliers still boast the nation’s second-best scoring defense but may play around with a four-guard lineup to create more offense in Sene’s absence.

There’s no better team to experiment on than Boston College, which is still struggling to jell with 11 new players and nine freshmen. The Eagles have lost five of seven and don’t have a road victory.

Boston Celtics at Orlando Magic (-8, 176)

Fading teams on the second half of back-to-back games can be a good betting strategy at times. However, Tuesday was not one of those games for Magic supporters.

Orlando put up a franchise-low 56 points in Monday’s blowout loss at Boston. After flying to Indiana, the Magic took it out on the Pacers in a 102-83 win, easily covering as 3-point favorites.

“Why would we have so much more energy on the second night of a back-to-back [after] getting in at three in the morning?” Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said after the win. “Well, because we got our butt kicked last night and we were embarrassed.”

Embarrassment could play a part in Thursday’s game as well. The Magic were terrible in that loss to the Celtics and Dwight Howard will be looking for a big game after getting in foul trouble against Indiana. Howard finished with 14 points and nine rebounds in that one, though he did set the Magic’s franchise scoring record in the third quarter.

Orlando also won’t have to deal with Ray Allen, who is still out with an ankle injury.

Memphis Grizzlies at Los Angeles Clippers (-3.5, 191.5)

The Grizzlies had a seven-game winning streak snapped against Portland on Tuesday and coach Lionel Hollins could see it coming a mile away with his club playing its second game in as many nights.

"When you're a little bit fatigued, it's hard to keep attacking. You want to settle, and we did settle too much," Hollins told reporters.

Hollins had better hope his club finds its legs in a hurry. Even though the Clippers will be playing on consecutive nights, they are putting up 97.4 points per game.

On the season, Memphis is averaging about 95 points on the year, but only 85.4 points on the road.

We like this one to stay under.
